Right now, as you are reading this, there are approximately 500,000 service dogs in the United States helping everyday Americans with disabilities live fuller, more purposeful, and joyful lives.

These specially-trained canines are truly "essential workers" for the well-being of people everywhere across America. And their nonstop 24/7 life-saving canine work is a most daunting chalThe Paper - 760.747.7119

lenge. Because there are so many people today in need of them.

MILLIONS OF AMERICANS LIVE WITH DISABILITIES. According to the latest CDC figures of 2022, over 63 million adults in the U. S. live with disabilities. To better transform those numbers into sobering statistics, read and ponder the following:

* That's 26% of the U. S. adult population, or approximately one in four people with disabilities.

* 4.6% of them are blind or have difficulty seeing.

* 6.8% have an independent living disability, meaning they struggle to do errands by themselves. * One in four American women have some sort of disability.

* Many disabilities are unseen, such as depression, bipolar, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which is especially prevalent among our U. S. military veterans. Service dog duties cover the gamut from the

physical disability, to the emotional, psychological, medical (such as detecting cancer), and much, much more.

Every 30 seconds, somewhere in these United States, a service dog is accomplishing the seeminglyimpossible! Right now, somewhere within the 50 U. S. states, there is a person with diabetes who is distracted by their daily work and has completely forgotten to test his or her own blood sugar level.

dog saved her from the clutches of diabetic complications.

For one woman, her service dog companion sits at her feet. Then, the dog lifts its head. Then the canine moves closer by her side. The dog now begins to become agitated. And as mere seconds pass, the dog begins to whimper (what canine experts call "crying").

Incredibly, the dog's sense of smell, located in its olfactory centre in the neural tissue of its fore-brain, allows it to have a sense of smell that is as much as 100,000 times more acute than any human being.

Unknown to them, during the height of their busy job schedule, their body's sugar level is now trending dangerously low.

Ginger, is the dog's name, and she is now standing fully erect on all fours, and like a centurion guardian, the canine yelps out loud as if in sudden pain!

The dog is in distress, and nudges her handler's leg once, twice, then repeatedly -- and also begins whimpering (as if crying) louder and louder. This is no ordinary animal.

The startled woman worker breaks her concentration on her focused work schedule. She looks down lovingly at her four-footed guardian angel. And fully recognises what her dog's "alert signal" is all about.

She lovingly pats her service dog companion on the head and she takes her four tablets of glucose to combat hypoglycemia. This wasn't the first time her service

The female canine, Ginger, has been highly-trained to use her uncanny sense of smell to detect such a lowsugar level, an attribute which still puzzles animal behaviourists today.

More than that, the highly-trained dog can be inches away from a barbecue where aromatic fish and meat fill the surrounding air and yet still be able to discern if its master's sugar level has dropped below their target level, or between 55-69 mg/dl. SERVICE DOGS ARE PROTECTED BY U. S. LAWS. As mentioned above, the United States has approximately 500,000 service dogs helping and assisting people under the "Americans with Disabilities Act" (ADA). By law, these precious, lifesaving service dogs must be given access to almost everywhere that their human handlers go.

As such, these dogs make it possible for people with various disabilities to live independently and overcome the challenges of day-to-day life. They assist people with visual

DEAR SEAN:

I am 67 years old and I hate myself for not having seen my son in 30 years, and it is my fault we drifted apart, I’m to blame. I’m a horrible dad. His saviour came in the form of a golden retriever-mix, by the name of Billy. The intervention of a service dog was the perfect fit for his ailments.

Amazingly, these service dogs can calm someone with post-traumatic stress disorder, even waking them from upsetting dreams. They can even sense a PTSD attack in advance, before it even occurs, often fetching prescribed medication for their handlers and, thus, derailing or alleviating the PTSD episode. During such ‘events,’ these dogs provide their owners with physical comfort, the sense of touch, as PTSD victims often brace themselves by hugging their dogs until the moment passes. For San Diegan, William Lee Canet, his service dog, Billy, was the perfect medical prescription.

While the U. S. Navy medical “field doctor” Canet, assisted and saved countless wounded U. S. Marines, sadly, there was no one to return the favour when he retired with mental flashbacks, deep depression, emotional trauma, and PTSD – that is, no one -- until Billy, the golden retriever, came into his shattered life. After the specially-trained trauma dog was paired with William Canet, the beautiful golden retriever lit up his life. Canet’s life suddenly rebounded.

And he was led – of all things -- by a dog, out of his tomb of pain and darkness.

Canet’s civilian life was remedied by a strange medical prescription which came in the form of four legs and a long shaggy tail.

Through pure animal instincts, the dog had genuine empathy because he could actually ‘sense’ and ‘feel’ his master’s inner pain and torment. The bond of love was ineffable. The 28-year-old U. S. military veter-

I realize this is a dim view of humanity. Of course not all mankind is this bad. Admittedly, there have been exceptional humans: Mother Teresa, Saint Francis, Helen Keller, Richard Petty, etc. But to view our species as anything other than flawed selfseeking creatures is, well… A mistake. Give yourself a break.

Compared to other species we are as saintly as a bunch of sweathogs. Actually many humans are not nearly as devoted as hogs.

Take, for instance, Prudence, a Welsh hog in Carthamenshire, Wales. A few years ago, Prudence saved her owner from accidental death when her owner sank into a muddy bog and nearly drowned. Prudence pulled the woman out.

“Without Pru,” says Prudence’s owner, “I wouldn’t have been able to get out of the mire.” And the woman would have died.

Bank Robbery in Escondido. FBI Searching for Suspect

FBI investigators are searching for a bank robbery suspect who robbed a US Bank at 2369 E. Valley Parkway on April 19 around 9:04am according to the FBI San Diego Violent Crimes Task Force. The suspect approached a teller and presented a handwritten note demanding money.

The teller complied with the suspect's demand and gave him an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect then fled the area on foot. Investigators described the suspect as a black man, in his 30s, wearing a black t-shirt, black shorts, black and white sneakers, and blue surgical mask over his face.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call FBI San Diego at 858-320-1800 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. Deal reached: there will be a midway of games and rides at the San Diego County Fair this year

Marathon negotiating sessions over a recent weekend led to a settlement that clears the way for the carnival midway at the 2022 fair. A deal was reached that will allow a full array of rides and games at the San Diego County Fair this year. The status of the midway had been in jeopardy since April 5, when

Superior Court Judge Kenneth Medel issued an injunction blocking a contract awarded by the 22nd District Agricultural Association for a single company to run the midway. The district oversees the fairgrounds where the annual event is held.

Medel found that the award violated competitive bidding principles in state law, because the district had not followed procedures under public contracting codes and the qualifications to bid had been tailored to favor one company, Ray Cammack Shows, or RCS.

A competitor, Talley Amusements, had filed a lawsuit and contended the district was playing favorites and attempting to steer the potentially lucrative contract toward RCS.

John Moot, the lawyer for Talley, said that under the terms of the deal the district will put on what is known as an independent midway — one where individual companies with rides and games ink contracts with the district for the annual event. That is how the district ran the midway for decades, before deciding in 2020 it wanted one contract with a master operator, citing efficiency and cost savings. Under that system the master operator could subcontract out games, rides and food, but it also pushed out many independent operators who had come to the fair for years.

Had kind of a nice surprise last Thursday..

An old, old pal I had not seen in, maybe, 30 years, called to say he was in El Cajon, about a 40 minute drive from us. He wanted to come by and I welcomed him to come see us.

We both had a cup of Minestrone soup, some great bread and butter, and a cold beer. And we talked. And we laughed. And we remembered "the good times."

It was both a happy time and a sad time. I knew this was the last time I'd ever see Tom. He lives in Hawaii . . . gonna visit some daughters in the LA area, then to Las Vegas to visit a son and his family, then back home to Hawaii. Tom lost his wife, Ginny, about a year ago, March 8th, six days after my son, Scott passed.

The happy times, among others, were when Tom and I would

“The parties have agreed to meet and work out the details of the allocation of rides and games at the 2022 fair, with Talley, RCS and other independent midway operators participating in that process,” Moot said.

In a statement issued by marketing director Jennifer Hellman, the district said it is “pleased to have reached this agreement” and was now looking forward to a return of the fair from June 8 through July 4. Details of how the midway will be laid out will be worked out over the next week. In a statement RCS, whose contract to operate the midway was blocked by Medel’s ruling, said its goal was to produce good entertainment for the fair.

“To make sure San Diego has a 2022 fair, RCS sat down with the district and representatives from Talley Amusements, with the assistance of Judge Frazier, to work out a compromise to ensure the fair takes place this year,” the company said.

The fair attracts 1.5 million visitors a year and the revenue it produces accounts for 57 percent of the district’s budget.

an was now out-and-about, experiencing the world, and even attending college . . . along with his loyal canine companion, Billy, always by his side.

Today, William “Lee” Canet is now 35-years-old, and he clearly remembers what his service dog did for him, as he expressed in his own words: “You go from a place of darkness and despair to getting out of the house, having another purpose – and living again.”

(Canet’s service dog, Billy, was trained and donated by Next Step Service Dogs of Escondido. Today, the nonprofit organization (Next Step Service Dogs) is working and helping wounded veterans at Camp Pendleton, near Oceanside, California.)

SERVICE DOG PROVES MEDICAL EXPERTS WRONG BY HELPING 11-YEAR-OLD LITTLE GIRL TO WALK. The top medical experts told the parents of 11-yearold Bella Burton that the little girl would be confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. The medical prognosis devastated Bella’s parents, Edward and Rachel Burton of Woburn, Massachusetts. Little Bella, who only weighed a scant 40 pounds, was born with a rare and progressive muscle-wasting condition known as Morquio syndrome.

The Morquio syndrome is a rare, inherited birth disorder. It is so rare as to only affect one in 250,000 births; with the symptoms beginning to appear between the ages of one and three The cruelty of Morquio syndrome is that there is no cure.

Symptoms include short height, abnormal bone development, and a large head with a short body torso. The lack of enzymes can damage a child’s physical capabilities, and cause enlarged organs, a heart murmur, and breathing problems. Because there is no cure, treatments may include enzyme replacement therapy, gene therapy, and bone marrow transplants.

Miraculously, the feeble little girl whose legs had been wasting away, learned to walk with the mysterious emotional, mental, and psychological support of a 4-year-old Great Dane service dog, named George.

The massive Great Dane gave her the strength (and the will) to somehow walk without using her crutches, by allowing little Bella to lean on his massive 130 pound frame. Instinctively, the dog sensed that she was unable to walk without crutches, so he slowly assisted her: first, the service dog encouraged her by gently nudging her to just stand erect (without her crutches), with the frag-

Page 6

ile little girl just leaning upright against his powerful body. The 11-year-old just stood there, only leaning against the canine, George, but not moving.

It was the very first time she tried standing, away from her wheelchair and crutches. After all, the world’s top medical authorities said she could never, ever walk.

Then, patiently, as time passed, the service dog cautiously and slowly moved slightly forward with her leaning and holding onto him – only inch by inch. Then George, instinctively, would occasionally stop, so she could just rest, but still standing!

George, the canine wonder dog, was giving her the will and the strength to eventually walk beside him – helping little Bella to embrace a normal life. The dog, by uncanny instincts, knew this was not a ‘normal’ life, and that she was ‘hurt.’

In time, Bella, whose legs had been wasting away before meeting George, the tiny 40-pound girl was now able to support her entire weight after only six months with her service dog!

The medical experts who formally agreed that she would be confined to a wheelchair for a lifetime, were now stunned into silence, as both little Bella and her new best friend, George, appeared on a Channel 5 documentary titled “Dogs With Extraordinary Jobs!” on the Smithsonian channel. On the televised documentary, Bella exclaimed: “My leg muscles got really weak and it was hard to walk, but once I got George it kind of forced me to walk!” She uttered the words along with a broad smile as big as all outdoors.

George, the huge 130 pound muscular Great Dane dog, and little 40pound Bella Burton, both shared their amazing journey together when it was aired on various newscasts such as ABC News, as well as foreign newspapers around the globe, including London’s The Daily Mail, which is the largest daily circulated newspaper in the United Kingdom.

Three years before she got her service dog, George, Bella had to rely on crutches or a wheelchair. Today, with the help of George, she has learned to walk, run, and even swim!

She not only swims, but she can dive and do flips in the water, with George always close and keeping a careful watch over her!

Medical authorities had never seen anything like it in their medical journals, as expert one was quoted as simply saying: “When Bella

Inflation Blues

The rising cost of virtually everything is costing Californians dearly. March inflation surged to 8.5%, the largest increase in 40 years. This spike, driven largely by the cost of gasoline, made March the tenth straight month with inflation over 5%.

So what’s the solution? One important step would be to suspend our 51 cent per gallon gas tax, the nation’s highest. Not only is this a direct tax on those with the least ability to pay, it drives up the cost of all goods shipped on our highways – in other words – everything. Over the past 12 months, groceries rose 10% overall, with meats, poultry, fish and eggs increasing by 13.7%. According to a recent Bloomberg report, inflation will cost the average U.S. household $5,200 this year, or $433 per month. While average wages rose by 5.6% in March, inflation wiped out that increase and wages actually decreased by 2.7%. Given these facts and our state’s huge budget surplus, you’d think Sacramento would jump at the chance to provide relief to overtaxed, hardworking Californians. But that’s not the case. In fact, legislation to temporarily suspend the gas tax was blocked and the bill was hijacked by the

majority and transformed into an attempt to increase taxes!

Suspension of the gas tax is off the table, but a rebate to help defray the cost of gasoline is included in the Governor’s budget proposal. The amount of the rebate is unclear, it will take months to pass, and owners of the state’s 400,000 electric vehicles will be eligible for the “gas tax rebate,” even though they don’t pay the gas tax. Californians need immediate relief. Inflation is making living in the Golden State impossible for many, and too many Sacramento legislators are refusing to take even a small step to help those who need it the most. Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R-Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Thank You, North County

Last week, my office hosted a State of the North County at the El Corazon Senior Center in Oceanside. I truly was amazed by the over 250 people who attended many of whom make North County such a wonderful place to live and work. If you weren’t able to attend, I wanted to give a few of the highlights from the day. First, we had a very special guest onhand, Bud Roberds. Bud is a World War II veteran who just celebrated his 102nd birthday! Bud was a music teacher at Fallbrook High School and still plays the piano weekly at the Peking Wok Restaurant in Bonsall. It truly was an honor to have him on hand! As far as my speech, I focused on many topics, including homelessness and behavioral health.

I believe that we must do a better job as a society dealing with those suffering from behavioral health issues. I am proud to say that North County is leading the way when it comes to creating Crisis Stabilization Units (CSU). A CSU is an ER for those in a mental health crisis. I’ve had families ask me, what do they do? Where can they go if they have a loved one suffering from a mental

health crisis? A hospital ER is not the place for someone in a mental health crisis, but now they can go to a CSU. The County now has 5 Crisis Stabilization Units. Three of these ER’s for mental health, are here in North County. A lot has been done, but there is a lot more to be done. We will keep working and pushing that boulder up the mountain and helping those who are struggling.

There were many more topics addressed, which I can touch on in the upcoming weeks, but in the meantime, I want you to know, I am proud to work for you, proud to be a part of this region, will always fight for North County.

PROBLEM SOLVED

Q: In 2019, I won a Back to School Sweepstakes from Extended Stay America. The prize was a Kid Trax battery-powered car. I still have not received any information on the shipping of this prize.

I wanted to surprise my twin nieces with this for Christmas 2019, but the car never arrived. Then I thought it would get here in time for their birthdays. I didn't hear back from Extended Stay for months.

About a month ago I was asked about the color for the prize and thought I would have it for this Christmas. But they never responded. Can you help me? -- Michelle Fiorelli, Erie, Pa. A: Congratulations on winning the Kid Trax car, which looks like a lot of fun. Of course, Extended Stay America should have delivered the toy to you as promised. It looks like you followed up numerous times with the hotel chain and, to your credit, kept your correspondence polite and professional. I'm not sure if I would have been so patient.

As the founder of two nonprofit organizations, I've run many contests. They are more complicated than they look. Normally, there are three or more parties involved, including the company giving the merchandise away, a third-party fulfillment company, the organization and the recipient. It can get confusing.

I would have appealed to Extended Stay America at a higher level and in writing. I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/extended-stayamerica/">Extended Stay America executives</a> on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. You've waited a long time for your Kid Trax. It's been almost four years since you won that sweepstakes. In fact, this may be a new record. Are the kids still interested in playing with a toy car or have they outgrown it?

Most people would have given up on Extended Wait America by now. But not you. I admire your persistence. Often, companies keep people waiting in the hopes that they will give up and go away. I'm not saying that's what happened here, but if that was what Extended Stay America had in mind, they were messing with the wrong customer. Good for you!

I contacted Extended Stay America on your behalf. It investigated your missing prize and found that the fulfillment company hadn't processed it for some reason. It followed up with the company and you received your Kid Trax -- at last. © 2022 Christopher Elliott. Christopher Elliott is the chief advocacy officer for Elliott Advocacy. TRAVEL TROUBLESHOOTER

Q: I bought two tickets from Aegean Airlines just before the COVID shutdown. The airline offered vouchers for credit, redeemable for cash after a year. After the year ended, I received a refund for one of the tickets. But Aegean shows the other as "already redeemed," even though it hasn't been. To add confusion, the refund for the one ticket does not indicate which one was refunded. -- Benn Karne, Oakland, Calif. A: You should have received that second ticket refund by now.

Aegean Airlines' refund policy, while not perfect, is better than most. Many European airlines canceled their flights and forced customers to accept a voucher that expired after a year. If they couldn't use the flight credit within a year, the airline got to keep the money.

Your credit worked the other way. If you couldn't use the voucher, you received a full refund. (What's the ideal resolution, you ask? A full refund after the cancellation. But we don't live in an ideal world.)

I'm not surprised that refund cases like yours are dragging on for years, literally. Airlines and other travel companies would rather forget the beginning of the outbreak, and they are more focused on the future than on a few painful months in 2020 when it looked like the sky was falling. But you can't let them forget. I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/aegeanairlines/">customer service managers at Aegean Airlineas</a> on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. But a review of your case suggests those names were only enough to get you the first refund. In fact, you sent numerous emails and a polite letter to the CEO using our online contacts. Then the airline refunded your first ticket. But Aegean's site showed it had refunded both tickets.

So what was the problem? I contacted the airline on your behalf. A representative said the airline had tried to send the second refund to your bank, but it seems the transfer failed. That can happen when the account number is incorrect. But you had supplied the right bank account number. I think it's possible someone on the other end didn't type your bank account information in correctly on the second ticket.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

A Few Moments From Yester-Year

Back in 1969 when I was a staff writer for the Associated Press I was assigned to go out and interview actors on a movie set east of Apache Junction, Arizona.

The movie being filmed was “The Ballad of Cable Hough,” starring Jason Robards, Jr., David Warner, and Stella Stevens. I was introduced to Robards first, who promptly told me he didn’t give interviews, but was happy to show me around the set. He was very cordial as we visited for about an hour. I had put my notebook in my hip pocket, but I didn’t tell him I had a good memory. Some of his most memberable roles was in “The Country Girl,” “Hour of the Gun,” “A Thousand Clowns,” and the 1976 blockbuster, “All the President’s Men.”

Christopher Elliott's latest book is “How To Be The World’s Smartest

Jump ahead 10 years. I took my teenaged daughter to see the classic Broadway musical “42nd Street” at the Civic Theater in downtown San Diego. The play was the first Great White Way musical which began as a popular depression-era film that ended up in New York. The reverse had been the norm up until the smash-hit 1933 movie. It starred Warner Baxter, Dick Powell, Ruby Keeler, and a number of cast members who went on to become stars in their own right (Ginger Rogers for one).

That evening the theater was nearcapacity. Final minutes before curtainup, an elderly lady made her way through our row and took the empty seat alongside me. The play that evening, of course, was a big hit with the audience. After the final curtain the director came out on stage, thanked the audience and announced the film’s main actress, Miss Keeler, was in the audience. The spot light suddenly illuminated our row . The old lady sitting alongside of me struggled, but finally stood up and waved to a thunderous ovation. I glanced at her proud, smiling face, but then I couldn’t ignore the elderly dancer’s feet, which were wearing shoes with holes cut out of the toeareas, obviously knurled from years of stage work. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime classic moments.

Of course, my daughter only took my word for the importance of the moment, but since then she’s watched the original movie and now appreciates what she witnessed. Our Staff Sage Next I was introduced to British actor David Warner. He was a pleasant enough fellow, but wasted no time in telling me how much he “hated” America.” It had something to do with the Vietnam war, which was going on at that time. I did take notes when chatting with Warner, but I didn’t write much about him.

Stella Stevens was busy in the make-up trailer so it was small unforgettable talk as she primped in the mirror. All I ever saw was her image in the mirror. The story went out over the national AP wire and, understandably, Warner’s comments gained the most coverage. I never heard back from any of the three, but for actors used to seeing all sorts of publicity, my jottings were a blip on the wire machines and their publicists.

In a recent front-page feature for this news magazine, long-time friend Cecil Scaglione told readers about the 1978 mid-air collision of Pacific Southwest Airline’s “Flight 182.” Cecil and I both covered that tragic event, although at that time we worked at different newspapers. I’ve known and worked alongside this Canadian-born wordsmith for more than 45 years. He has an infectious sense of humor and some of his “Think about it” one-liners are classic. Here are a few examples of his classic wit and wisdom: “Everyone owes it to themselves to become successful. After that, they owe it to the IRS.” “Keep in mind that your tongue is always wet, so it can easily slip.”

“I just learned of the death of a neighbor who didn’t leave his wife much when he died, but he left her a lot when he was alive.” “Curiosity can be costly. Paying good money to see how fast a horse can run has chewed up many fortunes.”

You re-sent the account number. This time, the refund went through. © 2022 Christopher Elliott.

seen him in a number of big films such as: “Titanic,” “A Christmas Carol,” “The Omen,” several of the Harry Potter films, as well as dozens of American TV films and series.

To tell the truth, I’ve forgotten what Robards told me that day, but this old sailor remembers all too well Warner’s rantings of hate. For someone who has a dislike for this country he’s made a pretty good living from the many Hollywood films he’s appeared in on this side of the pond. You may have

“That old ‘You’re Next’ poke in the ribs you used to get at weddings isn’t so funny now that you’re attending funerals.” “I’m gonna make a sign for the bathroom in my church: ‘No Restroom For The Wicked!’”

“If you’re faced with a choice between two evils, pick the one you haven’t tried yet.

Burton met George, it was a match made in Heaven!”

Readers can view a most extraordinary video of both George and little Bella together at: https://www.petful.com/service-animal/heartwarming-service-dog-stories/ Today, according to Bella’s mother, Rachel Burton: “Bella can now even walk around without George!”

More recent videos show Bella can now walk up and down her stairs at home without a lot of help, whereas three years ago such an achievement was thought to be medically and humanly impossible for her! Says Bella: “George retrained me to walk! I wasn’t going to give up, and he (George) knew that, so he helped me make sure I wasn’t going to.”

But even though Bella can walk, swim, and dive by herself, she knows that George, her 130 pound Great Dane from the Service Dog Project will always be her best friend and she will never, ever part with him. Often, just the two of them, Bella and George, simply cuddle on the couch together. Bella’s parents say that the two have

been inseparable from the start, and they aim to keep it that way. As for George, his miraculous work with Bella has earned him worldwide recognition. The story has exploded on the worldwide internet. And by the way, George has also won the American Kennel Club’s Award for Canine Excellence!

The entire Burton family attended the American Kennel Club event in Orlando, Florida, where the big, lovable dog personally received his special award in front of thousands of spectators, alongside of Bella and her parents, Edward and Rachel Burton. COMPANION DOG STOPS HIS OWNER FROM COMMITTING SUICIDE. What does deep depression ‘smell’ like to a companion canine? Or, how are such dogs able to ‘sense’ suicidal thoughts?

As impossible as these capabilities seem to be for ordinary human beings to even imagine, to fourpawed heroes, this seeminglyimpossible ability is an ongoing baffling phenomenon for research scientists. Byron Taylor is a young man with most of his exciting, youthful life

full of dreams and ambitions, all of which he eagerly looked forward to fulfilling, along with his companion dog and girlfriend. Then, one unexpected day, Byron’s life took a most savage and unmerciful turn for the worse.

Bryon began to suffer intense bouts of depression after his girlfriend broke off the relationship. At first, he became philosophical: Life goes on, the good and the bad.

But he was human, and the separation preyed on his weakness and as time went on, things became worse and his clinical depression slowly got the better of him. Outwardly, he appeared normal, even to himself. But inside, his mind was elsewhere: he was calmly and methodically planning his own suicide.

Unlike unrequited love between Byron and his ex-girlfriend, there sitting with him was his companion dog, a 6-year-old Welsh Bull Mastiff by the name of Geo, who loved Byron Taylor with unconditional love and loyalty, along with the dog having instinctual empathy. Cleo, sensed something deep within the privacy of his master’s mind.

Somehow, some way, the dog sensed a mysterious “inner danger” to his beloved master. The dog seemed to

sense a strange, silent, voiceless death stalking his precious Daddy (which is how pack animals often perceive their owners, e.g. “daddy” or “mommy.”).

Byron chuckled and patted the powerful dog, but when they locked eyes . . . the dog tilted his head slightly and whimpered. Byron broke-off the stare and had chills. (There’s no way in hell, he thought to himself, that anyone – let alone a dog – could fathom his mindset.) With a forced smile, he silently rose from his sofa and calmly went into his garage. And fashioned a noose at the end of a rope with which he planned to hang himself.

Leaving the noose downstairs, he then slowly walked upstairs to his bedroom and closed the door behind him, leaving his loyal dog Geo outside his door.

He had tried to reconcile himself over the weeks, but to no avail. Clinical depression had fully set-in, and the inner pain was now too intense, and the fiery scars now ran too deeply through his psyche. All he wished for . . . was for the pain to stop.

About Humans Cont. from Page 3

And do you want to know how pathetically human I am? After reading this touching story about Prudence’s heroism, guess what I was thinking? I was trying to figure out how to use this story in a paragraph and insert a wisecrack about bacon. I should be ashamed. See what I mean about us pitiful humans? We’re a mess, but we don’t see it. When will we finally wake up and smell the bacon?

Oh, sure, we tell ourselves we have giant brains, opposable thumbs, and superior health insurance coverage. We call ourselves the dominant species, and this makes us feel proud. But put us next to a Labrador and we appear about as loyal as a sea sponge. Which is an insult to sea sponges. Some colonies of sponges have been alive for 2,300 years, filtering out harmful impurities and bacteria from their marine environments. Meanwhile, what have we humans contributed to our environment? The Kardashians. I share all this with you because I want you to know you’re not alone in your humanhood. I am like your son. I was abandoned by my father, too. I grew up feeling the same way your son probably feels. I’ve been where your son is.

Escondido City. Streets have been replaced but NEVER these sidewalks which pose a severe danger to myself, a Senior. I have to be forced to walk in the street on account of how bad these walks are for falls. City wants to raise sales tax. What in 40 years have they been doing with revenue generated to so vaguely overlook this danger? Giving their City Attorney, J. Epp and Mgr, C. Phillips $5,000 raise each. Rather than take care of hazards. Past financial errors of past members must not be forced upon residential populace for increased at such inflationary times. Costs of food and gas is current burden hard to deal with presently. This council needs to lighten up a notch! People are suffering especially seniors on meek income. What must they be THINKING? /s/ Maryann Sinopoli Escondido, CA.

I’ve experienced similar emotions. Which is why I believe I can tell you something with near certainty. Your kid still loves you. Don’t misunderstand me, this doesn’t mean your son will open his arms to you. He might not. But even if your son seems to hate you; even if he THINKS he hates you; deep down he doesn’t.

In fact, I’m willing to bet that your son’s love is like a pool of crude oil, buried deep beneath a surface of granite, just waiting to gush forth.

Sadly, I don’t know how to drill past that tough exterior slab. Only you and your son can discover this. But I can absolutely tell you how to find love during the meantime. You can start by forgiving yourself. If you ask me, sir, you are not required to hate yourself for your wrongdoings. Neither should you hold yourself prisoner. Are you mistake free? No. You are a member of mankind, there are 7.674 billion of us out here just like you. You are not making this world a better place by beating yourself up. You deserve love as much as anyone on this planet.

Also, if you don’t mind me saying so, I love you, for trying to make things right with your child. And most importantly, because you’re human.

So I realize this column is filled with some stupid anecdotes. You were probably expecting something better written, but I’ve never claimed to be a sharp guy. I’m certain I have misspoken here, and I may have said things that are totally incorrect. All I can say is: oh, well. Tomorrow is a day with no mistakes in it.

Alone in his bedroom, he sat at his desk. And gathered his thoughts.

And then young Byron Taylor proceeded to write a final suicide note to his family. Expressing his sorrow and regret for what they would soon find with his lifeless body. When the handwritten suicide note was finished, Byron slowly opened his bedroom door to proceed downstairs and to hang himself by the neck until dead.

When he opened his bedroom door . . . he was shocked from the crown of his head to the soles of his feet, thunderstruck and speecheless. His knees suddenly weakened and he braced himself on the door in total disbelief. There in front of him, stood his loving dog, Geo. The huge, powerful Welsh Bull Mastiff which he loved for six years, since he was a mere puppy – now stood firmly on all fours in front of him, the fashioned suicide noose . . . shredded and torn to pieces, hanging from the dog’s formidable and powerful jaws! Somehow, the dog’s instincts knew that his owner was planning on harming himself with the rope, and the loyal animal would have no part of it. By raw instincts alone, the dog knew that his Daddy was plan-

ning his own death.

And the despised culprit was the rope and noose, which now dangled in mere shreds from the Bull Mastiff’s ferocious jaws; Cleo’s huge canine teeth visibly locked, like a vice, as he maintained his unrelenting grip.

Byron Taylor recalled the moment in his own words: “At first, I thought he wanted to play. I said ‘give it here,’ and he started growling at me. I could see the noose was mangled to pieces as it dangled fro Geo’s mouth. He chewed it up! “And he never growls. He’s a docile, gentle dog. But each time I tried to take the noose from him, he would start to growl!”

The two had always been extremely close, but never did Byron ever imagine just how close his companion dog really was.

In that moment, Byron knew that his dog had the ability to ‘sense’ what was wrong, and that Geo knew that it was his mission to stop his owner from causing harm to himself. In Byron’s own words: “In a way, I know that Geo knew what I was going to do. They have a sixth sense about this kind of thing.”

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

When I write these articles, I try to avoid making them a commercial or announcement, but rather give the reader an insight into what I am thinking about an issue. Or what I think is important. Or what is taking up my time. This week I want to draw your attention to a decision that we are facing, and that is what kind of city do we want to be.

We briefed the public at the 4/20 council meeting what the city services could look like without an increase in revenue. As you may be aware, the state retirement system (CALPERS) has not met revenue expectations, and so we as a city now have to make up the shortfalls. The numbers are big and very impactful. I am asking you to look at that brief. It is on the website. This is one of those decisions that has both a practical side and an emotional side. It has a partisanship element. It is about taxes and how much do we want to pay and what does that buy. We all know the clichés associated with taxes. Let’s leave them at the door, and talk about consequence of one direction or the other. This is going to take some research. We have on the website a forum called Escondido Discussion to get the dialogue started. Please go to it and get engaged. Thank you! Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! The Island of misfit toys

” The Island of Misfit Toys” is a story of rejection, redemption and eventual triumph, as in the story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. In that story Rudolph was ridiculed and shunned because of his red nose but eventually overcame adversity to become revered and loved by all, even those who had scorned him.

Our “misfit” story is about two laptop PCs, Tracee and Hewlett, that were abandoned by their masters when they became handicapped by functional problems. Hewlett, a fifteen inch HP laptop, and Tracee, a seventeen inch Acer, huddled quietly together on a dark lonely shelf in our workshop, ignored for over a year. Nome came

Hewlett’s rejection tag listed a faulty motherboard battery charging circuit. Nome plugged him in and he immediately booted to bios proudly boasting a fourth generation i3 CPU. Nome decided to see if the perky little laptop could be restored to operational status. She installed 8GB of DDR III memory, a new 500GB SSD and Windows 10 Professional. Hewlett’s webcam and DVD-R/W worked flawlessly. Since the battery charging circuit on the mother board was defective, Hewlett could not operate on battery power, but the little PC was perfect as a plug-in work station. His features include both wired and wireless Internet, Webcam, DVD-R/W and integrated keyboard and mouse.

Okay, so we all know that George Washington was the first president, of the fledgling United States. We all know that he vowed never to tell a lie, and of course, it is common knowledge that he was the commander-in-chief of the military during the Revolutionary War. Therefore, most collectors of presidential memorabilia would think that Washington’s memorabilia would be the toughest to acquire. The answer to that is “yes” and “no”.

The most difficult presidential memorabilia to obtain is that of our country’s ninth president, William Henry Harrison. He was only president for parts of 32 days, having allegedly caught pneumonia on March 4, 1841, while delivering his inaugural address. Although experts disagree as to exactly the number of items that Harrison signed during his tenure, the number is around 14 – 20. Most of the items, are in public display. Any collector of presidential items needs to realize that the toughie is Harrison, and it is nearly impossible to complete a set of letters signed by all presidents. More about Harrison in a future column.

Washington items, however, are available. They are not necessarily terribly expensive, unless of course, you want to acquire some of the upper-end items. Such upper-end items include:

of being fully capable portable PCs, because neither of them could be operated in battery mode. But as desktop PCs they are actually more capable than most PCs designed to be desktops. Rejected and shunned as worthless, abandoned together in darkness and solitude for a year and finally re-discovered and resurrected by Nome. The final chapter with the storybook ending will be written when each of them is recognized as the absolutely perfect solution to some ones computer needs and each gets a new “forever” home.

even a fraction as much. A Washington coin from the 1789 inauguration can be acquired for around fifty dollars. If you are a card collector, presidential cards are very affordable. A Washington card, let’s say in the 1956 Topps set will cost you a couple of dollars. In fact, the entire set you can easily acquire for no more than $70 – 80. However, as with most other items, the condition of the set will be very important. I know of a presidential set that sold for over $10,000. If you are not careful, you will be spending a fortune on your collection. I know many collectors who have done just that.

Neither Tracee nor Hewlett were able to perform their intended function, that

Nome next turned her attention to Tracee, the large seventeen inch notebook. Tracee’s rejection tag listed her problem as a broken screen. To replace the screen, install an SSD, upgrade to 8GB of RAM and install Windows 10 would cost over $300. Even with her Intel Dual Core CPU, Tracee simply wasn’t worth repairing, so she was put aside for salvage. Nome decided to give her another chance. Nome upgraded Tracee to Windows 10, installed a 250 GB SSD and added 8GB of RAM and Voila; Tracee was transformed from a defective notebook to a highly functional desktop. Like most desktop, Tracee must be plugged into an external monitor, but unlike most desktops, Tracee has a full size integrated keyboard, touchpad, webcam, internal speakers wired and wireless Internet and a DVD-R/W. The story of Tracee and Hewlett isn’t

over yet. They are no longer Laptop PCs, they are now lightweight, highly portable full function desktop PCs. Hewlett doesn’t work in battery mode, but is excellent as a desktop. He weighs less than six pounds and with his integrated screen, can be used anywhere that has an electric outlet. Hewlett is ideal as a workstation for moving work between jobsites, or as a vacation portable. Tracee’s price tag is $200, Hewlett is $250

A document written and signed by Washington while he was President, went for over $50,000 at auction in 2013. Some Washington-signed documents can even go for much more, depending on the content of the document. A Washington-signed document that contains a great deal of historical content can sell for well over $100,000. Someone acquiring a document needs to ask if the document was both written and signed by, let’s say Washington, or nearly signed. Oftentimes, a collector will think that a signed Harry Truman letter, for example, was also in his own handwriting. They are often surprised to learn that the letter was typed, and Truman only signed it. How about a George Washington Inauguration Parade Sash? Nowadays they are not very common, but one from Washington’s 1789 inauguration was auctioned for a nifty $35,850.

What about an oil portrait of Washington? Say you have an art gallery, and you think an oil of Washington might look nice. Well, there was a Rembrandt Peale original of Washington that went for $662,500 in a recent auction.

Now what if you cannot afford to spend a king’s ransom on a Washington item? Yes, there are other items that will not yield as much, not

There are many collectors of George Washington memorabilia. Original Washington items will only greatly appreciate. If you have an opportunity, you might want to acquire a letter written and signed by him, or even a cut signature. A letter with minimal content will still cost several thousand dollars, and a cut signature will set you back hundreds, not thousands, of dollars. But you can’t go wrong with them, and holding them for awhile. Washington’s importance in the history of the United States can never be overstated. He has showed as a hero to people throughout the world, and as a result, he is a favorite among collectors. His memorabilia can be hard to find, but well worth the effort. Byron was weak with astonishment, and then he was overcome with exhilaration and joy, as he dropped to his knees and sobbed uncontrollably while hugging his dog, Geo. Only then, did the powerful dog loosen its deadly grip and let the noose and rope fall from its locked jaws. Tail wagging, the dog whimpered and licked Byron’s face, wagging his tail with unbounded happiness – seemingly relieved to have his Daddy, safe and sound of mind, back with him. Byron knew that there was another great love in his life; a most powerful and unconditional love that was always there for him. It was just packaged on four legs, with a wagging tail, and a wet nose . . . and with pleading eyes that seemed to beg: “Please Daddy, never abandon and leave me alone. For my world revolves around you.” Byron Taylor overcame his bout of depression.

His life is again fresh and evergreen. Says Bryon: “I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my dog, Geo. He saved my life.”

SUMMATION: THE BENEFITS OF SERVICE DOGS. There is no adequate value that can be placed on the benefits of service dogs: How can one measure the value of a service dog that saves and improves the life of any human being?

French president, Charles de Gaulle, once said: “The better I get to know men, the more I find myself loving dogs.”

But, perhaps famous wit and newspaperman, Will Rogers, got closer to the truth when he uttered: “If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.”

Due to the heroics of rescue helicopter crew and the ship's hospital staff, the only permanent injury was the loss of one ear.

Home Maintenance Improvements

The tasks that service dogs perform are “essential actions,” such as guiding people with visual impairments, retrieving items for people with mobility impairments and memory problems, signaling certain physical contact for those who are deaf, or even alerting people about to experience a cardiac (heart) episodes, strokes, or seizures before they happen.

The Master Chief answered, "Why, yes, Admiral. I couldn't help but notice that you are missing your starboard ear, so I don't know whether this impacts your hearing on that side." The Admiral got very angry at this lack of tact and threw him out of his office.

The next candidate, an Aviation Master Chief, when asked this same question, answered, "Well yes, Sir, you seem to be short one ear." The Admiral threw him out as well.

The third interview was with the Marine Sergeant Major. He was articulate, extremely sharp, and seemed to know more than the two Navy Master Chiefs put together. The Admiral wanted this guy but went ahead with the same question. "Do you notice anything different about me?" To his surprise, the Sergeant Major said, "Yes Sir. You wear contact lenses."

The Admiral was impressed and thought to himself, what an incredibly tactful Marine. "And how would you know that?" the Admiral asked.

The Sergeant Major replied: "Well, sir, it's pretty hard to wear glasses with only

one ear”.

Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it.

The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to go ahead and kick it up a notch. The doctor then adjusted the machine to 20% pain transfer. The husband was still feeling fine. The doctor checked the husband's blood pressure and was amazed at how well he was doing. At this point they decided to try for 50%. The husband continued to feel quite well. Since the pain transfer was obviously helping out the wife considerably, the husband encouraged the doctor to transfer ALL the pain to him. The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. When they got home, the mailman was dead on the porch. •••• Contractors

The Chicago contractor doesn't measure or figure, but leans over to the White House official and whispers, "$27,000."

The official, incredulous, says, "You didn't even measure like the other guys. How did you come up with such a high figure?”

He has his food prepared for him. He can eat whenever he wants. His meals are provided at no cost to him. He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise. For this he pays nothing, and nothing is required of him. He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than he needs, but he is not required to do any upkeep. If he makes a mess, someone else cleans it up. He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep. He receives these accommodations absolutely free. He is living like a King, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever. All of his costs are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day. I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick .......
