“We take every precaution to make sure there are no injuries,” Ron Nix said as he ran the nylon strap up my leg and wrapped it around my waist. “We don't want to get hurt, and I'm sure you don't want to get hurt.”
He got that right. Not getting hurt is an old family tradition, honed through the years by parents, grandparents and forefathers, all of whom avoided treacherous situations that might have produced The Paper - 760.747.7119

injury, pain and anything else even remotely associated with the prospect of bodily harm.
Nix, whose resume included the term “movie stunt actor,” kept talking as he cinched the strap around my middle, trying to reassure me that I hadn't been conned into doing this because when he asked if I wanted to go for a ride with a stuntman, I thought he meant sitting inside a pickup truck racing over the desert, not being dragged behind one.
“You won't get hurt,” he said.
“You already said that,” I responded. “You won't,” he claimed.
“What happens if I do?” I inquired.
“Always remember that cowboys don't cry,” he replied with a grin.
Nix and Tom Noga, who also did this kind of work for a living, rigged the straps and demonstrated how to cut myself loose in a hurry by

pulling a release wire. They said if anything goes wrong, pull the release wire. I pulled the release wire. They said I should wait until the ride began. Then Nix handed me sets of rubberized knee and elbow guards and told me to put them on over my shirt and pants. “Usually, these go under the clothing so the folks watching the movie don't know about them,” he said. “We wouldn't want to ruin our he-man images.”
As if on cue, Noga rolled up his

shirt sleeve to show off a couple of wounds he had recently received while doing this particular stunt. It didn't do much for my confidence. If a pro can get banged up like that, my chances of escaping unscathed would be minimal. “They'll be healed by Sunday,” Noga added with disarming nonchalance. “At least, they better be. I'm going to ride anyway, even if they aren't.”
He was part of a gathering of movie and television stuntmen scheduled to participate in a rodeo at “A Day in the West,” a movie ranch owned and operated by Nix, who had appeared in countless movies doing stuff like this. They would participate in five events – falling off a galloping horse, being dragged behind a horse, jumping on top of a bull from horseback, falling off a roof and barrel racing. Amanda Blake, who portrayed Miss Kitty on the television series “Gunsmoke,” was mistress of ceremonies. Her duties didn't include being dragged behind a pickup truck. Nix finished harnessing me and asked if I had any questions. I did.
I opened with, “What if we hit a tree stump?” “This is the desert,” Nix said. “There aren't any trees out here.”

BEST POEM IN THE WORLD
I was shocked, confused, bewildered as I entered Heaven's door, not by the beauty of it all,... nor the lights or its decor. But it was the folks in Heaven who made me sputter and gasp-the thieves, the liars, the sinners, the alcoholics and the trash.
There stood the kid from seventh grade who swiped my lunch money twice. Next to him was my old neighbor who never said anything nice. Bob, who I always thought was rotting away in hell, was sitting pretty on cloud nine, looking incredibly well.
I nudged Jesus, 'What's the deal?

“How fast will we be going?” I asked as he headed toward the cab of the pickup. “We go slow,” Nix answered.
“How slow is slow?” I queried.
eyes and my hair and under my fingernails and down my throat and into my armpits.

After about 25 yards, Nix yelled back, “Pull the release wire!”
“Two miles an hour?” I asked, almost hopefully.
He didn't have to say it twice. I pulled, it worked. Nix and Noga fought their way through the cloud of dust I had manufactured, unstrapped me and said I had, in their words, done good.
“Drive carefully,” I admonished, trying not to show fear.
My reply was terse, short, direct, succinct and to the point.

Saw a cute note on the back of an old VW van yesterday:
The couple produces photos of their 50-foot motor home, which is clean and well maintained and equipped with a beautiful nursery.
“Slow,” Nix said with just a trace of annoyance. “The truck won't go that slow,” he responded.
Nix explained that under normal circumstances, a movie camera would be mounted on the back of the truck so that on film, it would look like I was being dragged by a runaway horse. I already knew that, having seen a multitude of old western movies where the hero is supposedly being dragged behind a horse but there were tire tracks visible in the scene. However, worried that Nix might be so upset about me having this bit of insider information that he'd make the pickup go faster, I said nothing.
“Think you'd like to do this for a living?” Nix asked.
But I did sound a little bit like Gary Cooper when I said, “Nope.”
Then he jumped into the drivers seat, revved the engine and took off. True to his word, he didn't go very fast. Just fast enough to get dirt in my face. And up my nose. And down the back of my shirt and the front of my jeans and into my underwear and my boots and my I would love to hear Your take. How'd all these sinners get up here? God must've made a mistake!.'
'And why is everyone so quiet, so somber - give me a clue.' 'Hush, child,' He said, 'they're all in shock. No one thought they'd be seeing you.'

An elderly lady was invited to an old friend's home for dinner one evening.
She was impressed by the way her lady friend preceded every request to her husband with endearing terms such as: Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, etc.
The couple had been married almost 70 years and, clearly, they were still very much in love.
While the husband was in the living room, her lady friend leaned over to her hostess to say, 'I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your husband all those loving names.' The elderly lady hung her head, 'I have to tell you the truth,' she said, 'his name slipped my mind about 10 years ago, and I'm scared to death to ask the cranky old fart what his name is.'.... Therapist: Your wife tells me you never buy her flowers. Is that true?
Husband: To be honest, I never knew she sold flowers.
A husband and wife who work for the circus go to an adoption agency. Social workers there raise questions about their suitability.
The social workers now raise concerns about the education a child would receive while in the couple's care.
"We've arranged for a full-time tutor who will teach the child all the usual subjects along with French, Mandarin, and computer skills." Next the social workers express concern about a child being raised in a circus environment. "Our nanny is a certified expert in pediatric care, welfare, and diet."
The social workers are finally satisfied. They ask, "What age child are you hoping to adopt?" "It doesn't really matter, as long as the kid fits in the cannon.” As a chopsticks user, I am completely self-taught. Also, sorry for stabbing you in the eyeball.
I was in a minor accident this morning. The driver of the other car was a midget. He got out of the car, came storming up to my car and bellowed, "I want you to know I'm really not happy!" I said, "Okay, well then which one are you?"

Pool Table Escapade By Michele Ivy Davis
Sometimes a television show can be a dangerous thing.
My husband and I had just finished watching an episode of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” that involved a pool table. Laura Petrie, the wife, outplayed everyone and saved the day. “I could do that,” I said. “Easy.”
“Have you ever played pool?” my husband asked.
“Well, no. But I was watching everything. How hard can it be?”
As fate would have it, this happened a few days after Christmas and we had a little spare cash—a very little.
We decided to go to our favorite discount store where, a few years before, we had bought a floor-sample artificial tree—including all of its decorations—for next to nothing.

Escondido Public Library Seeks Community Input for Library Future - Escondido residents and non-resident users of the Escondido Public Library are asked to share their opinions on the future of the Library by participating in an online survey available through April 30, 2021. To take the survey, visit www.escondidolibrary.org. The survey is available in English and Spanish.
Developments in technology and changes in the soon-to-be postCOVID world, have drastically changed the needs of library users.
We entered the store, kids in tow, and there it was, bathed in a circle of light while angelic music played—a pool table! And not just any pool table. It was a floor sample, complete with all the necessary colored and striped balls, the little wooden triangle thing, chalk, and cue sticks.
The table called to us. No, it yelled to us. We were hypnotized by its beauty and our good luck. It was made of green felt-covered plywood, and the balls disappeared into the pockets only to rumble somewhere in the interior and reappear clattering against each other in a slot at one end of the table. It was beautiful. It was smaller than average. And best of all, it was already assembled. We figured it would fit in the spare room (formerly the playroom) on the second floor. We’d just moved the kids and their toys out of it and into their own rooms, and the space was empty. Fate again.
We were up to the challenge, the kids were excited, and the store was

How we got it home is a blur. We must have used a few of the tools we kept in the car to remove the legs, and then tied it to the roof while the kids straddled the bulky legs in the backseat for the short ride home.
We struggled to move it from the car, up the front path, through the door, and up the stairs. Even thought it had a plywood bed instead of the usual slate, it still weighed a lot.
It took the better part of the rest of the day to wrestle it into the room, reattach the legs, and level it. Finally we stood back and admired our handiwork. There stood our pool table in the center of the floor (was it once again glowing in a spotlight, and was that angelic music I heard?). It was our gift to ourselves, and it fit the room perfectly. In fact, there were about two feet of empty space all the way around. We read the rules, opened the box of balls, and racked them in their proper place on the green felt. Then we each took a pool cue.
We decided I would “break,” so I drew back my cue. Bam! It hit the wall behind me. I turned around surprised. I tried again. Bam! I moved to the side of the table.

Bam! The cue again hit against the wall. It turns out that two feet of space isn’t nearly enough to draw back a cue that is 57” long.
Then there was the matter of the sloping upstairs ceiling. Not only was it impossible to use the cue properly, it was impossible to stand upright at one end of the table. We were young, however, the kids wanted to play, and after hefting that pool table up a flight of stairs, we weren’t giving up.
My husband took the cues and marched out of the room to his workshop. I heard the whir of a motor starting up, a squeal, and then a clatter. Footsteps approached our new pool hall. The kids and I watched as our smiling hero appeared and handed us each a small cue exactly half the size of the ones he had left with. Problem solved.
I never got good enough to become a pool shark like Laura Petrie, the wife on the TV show, but the shorter cues made for a lot of fun, and we and the kids were more evenly matched when it came to keeping the 8-ball out of the pockets. Where there’s a will, there’s always a way. (Right: The author, Michele Ivy Davis)

The crash happened about 4:10 a.m. on northbound Interstate 15 near Del Lago Boulevard.
A 32-year-old man was behind the wheel of a stolen 2014 Ford Fusion sedan that crashed into the back of a semi truck while both vehicles were in the far right lane of the highway.
The Ford ended up wedged under the semi truck’s trailer, leaving the driver and his 32-year-old passenger trapped in the car. Paramedics took them to Palomar Hospital for treatment of major injuries, Escobar said.
The 43-year-old man driving the semi truck was uninjured. Police suspect the Ford driver was intoxicated at the time of the crash. Van Drives Off Cliff in Carlsbad, Winds up in the Ocean, Driver Injured

She has been like another child to me. Her first night in our home we kept her in the kitchen with some type of barricade that we built to hold her in. We used the old technique of putting an alarm clock in her box to make her think her mother or some other kin was there with her. She would have none of it.
The First Trixie
We got her the day she was to have been put to sleep.
We actually had gone to the Humane Society to get another dog that one of my salesman had spotted and thought we'd like. While we were looking at that pup our attention was drawn by this little white pup that jumped about 3 feet in the air, just begging for our attention. It wasn't long before we had shifted our attention and our affection to the jumping white puppy. When one of the attendants mentioned that she was to be put to sleep later that day we made our decision. The little white jumper was ours. We left word that if no one claimed the other pup they were to call us. We would take it too. No one called. We like to think it found a
Kevin Lynds, a Carlsbad Fire Battalion Chief, told 10News that a former Marine corpsman was among those who came to the driver’s aid and pulled him out of the vehicle, which landed on its side in the water. Video shot by 10News showed the man being loaded onto a stretcher and helped by firefighters up the cliff to a waiting ambulance. The driver reportedly didn’t brake before going through the guardrail and fencing and plunging more than 150 feet to the state beach property. The man told rescuers he swerved to miss an animal before going off the road, said Carlsbad Battalion Chief Ben Rosenthal. He was the sole occupant of the SUV.
The driver suffered minor injuries in the crash and remained hospitalized Wednesday, said Jorge Moreno, a spokesman for state parks. He said state parks officials will be investigating the crash.
I slept on the couch that night. I fought sleep as she would whimper and whine and jump. Some time later, I finally fell asleep . . .only to be awakened a short time later by little puppy kisses and a little bundle of white fur that leaped up on the couch and cuddled in next to me. I think that's when she staked her claim on me. She has never relinquished it. Nor have I disputed it.
She follows me everywhere. She sleeps with me. She follows me from room to room. When I'm in my office, working on my computer/word processor, she cuddles up in a chair next to me and guards me, protecting me from danger. If I get up to go to the rest room or to get a drink, she follows me. Only after I have returned to my office and started working away on my computer does she, once again, coil comfortably on her chair, burying her muzzle into her tail. One day my wife was talking to our cat, Aslon. I looked at Trixie and

All of today's newspapers across the United States (including our own SD Union-Tribune) just reported today (4/20/21), President Biden's new plan to stop harmful ethnic terms & will replace "Alien" with "noncitizen." said, "Look at that, Trixie. . .your mother is demented. Now she's talking to cats"! I'm pleased to report that Trixie agreed with me. Totally. I can remember when nature came calling. Trixie began to act strangely. Whining, running around. . .she seemed to have an interest in running to the door, wanting to go "Tatas" more and more often. It occurred to us that the young lady was in love. Well, maybe not in love, perhaps she was in lust. She had come into heat.
I've always regretted that we never let Trixie have a litter before she was spayed. Seems to me like every dog and cat should be able to have at least one litter; then they ought to be neutered/spayed. But. . we didn't. All of Trixie the Wonder Dog's affection has been directed toward her people family. And she is affectionate.
Like all dogs, Trixie has that ability to look into the soul of a human being and know what's going on inside. Whether I'm hurting, whether I'm happy, sad, lonely, depressed, angry, ill. . . she knows. And her soft brown eyes seem to talk to me. "Isn't life great!?. . .", she'll say. . .or, "It's going to be all right. . .". She knows just what to say and when to say it. And she says it all with her soft brown eyes.
My ex-wife, Mary, thinks Trixie is a talented dog. She isn't. Mary thinks that no other dog can stand

on her hind legs and prance about in a "dance" if you hold a tidbit just out of the range of her nose. Our youngest son, Kenny, long ago taught Trixie the Wonder Dog how to roll over. Now, in order for her to get her morning "Tatas" [the Scottish version of "Walkies" - (I married a Scots lass)] she has to do her roll over. As I approach the front door she'll roll over. . .once, twice. . .three times, without me even asking her. It is cute. But I wish Mary would quit calling Casting Agents for the Letterman Show.
As we approach the street I hold my hand in a casual "stop" position. . she watches my hand and will not cross the street until I give a sweeping motion with my hand and say..."Go"! Then she runs like a bat out of hell and cuts a beeline for the vacant lot kitty-corner from us. She prances and runs; she barks at some unseen stranger in the trees, or perhaps she is barking out of happiness. She pauses to make her toilet. She is quite elegant about it. After she completes her ablutions she, very lady-like, covers her leavings and takes off in a dead run. We think she has some whippet in her. She is a sleek dog. Trim. We think she looks like a miniature greyhound. She runs like the wind and is poetry to watch as she runs.

Later, after returning to the house, she curls up for a well earned nap. The naps grow more and more frequent as she grows older. And longer.
But, then, so do mine.
She won't be with us much longer.
She has been a very special, special lady in my life. A memory. One of the nicest people I ever knew. A memory, written in 1991
Epilogue: This was written 30 years ago . . . 18 years after we had acquired Trixie in 1973. That’s a total of 48 years ago.
Sadly, Trixie died as a result of my negligence and laziness. She had come to me and let me know she wanted to go out for a walk and I was taking a nap. Somehow, she managed to get out the front door and crossed the street; I was not there to give her a “stop” or “go,” signal. And she ran across the street and got hit by a car. Too late I arrived at the scene, saw she was badly injured but still alive. We took her to an emergency animal hospital and they saved her life. But Trixie was never the same after that, thanks to to my negligence.
About a year or two later we had to put Trixie down as she was clearly suffering. Mary knew it before I did. I was in denial. I finally had to accept it and she passed quietly. After we buried her in the backyard I made one of the dumbest decisions I’ver ever made. I decided I would never own a dog again. Losing them was just too damned painful.
So I stupidly denied myself the pleasure, the adoration, the absolute dedication of another dog. For 15 years. The we got a second Trixie . . soon followed by Cindy. We now are able to love them, receive their love and affection, and be happy once again. Dogs do that, you know. Do you enjoy reading The Paper? If so, consider subscribing.

The Cost of Entertainment in San Diego

Be prepared to bring along and spend, lots of money.

We Need more Ennui
Every once in awhile I use really big words . . . or unusual words . . . or foreign words or phrases, just so the reader knows I'm really, really smart and know a lot of things.
Oh, I suppose the average reader will marvel at my capacious mind and ponderous thoughts . . . and the voluminous amount of words I churn out in a single day. Some might even call it prodigious.
Sometimes a morning will seem particularly auspicious and I begin my seeking the proper circumlocution. Often, while out shopping I will dazzle the sales people attending me. For example, in a paint store the salesman might ask what color I have in mind for the living room interior. I will enable my 'thinking' look and then exclaim, "oh, I think something in a perpendicular shade would be nice." His look of amazement at my response tells me he certainly is impressed by my being loquacious.
In spite of this extreme concentration on the location and use of big words I remain a perfect example of conviviality and congeniality. I strive, at all times, to never be deleterious with my complete mastery of words and their meanings. I also am quite humble but not to the point of being frugal or parsimonious. I suppose some might say I am eccentric or even idiosyncratic but I maintain I remain a simple cowboy from the great state of Nebraska, without gasconading, just seeking a fortuitous opportunity now and then by which I hope to obtain a modest remunerative sinecure to plod through life.
It is within this milieu that I perfect my daily struggle and, ultimately, prove myself to be a true sesquipedalian. It is then, and only then, that I can return to a pleasant state of ennui. More than that, je ne sais pas. ennui = a feeling of listlessness and dissatisfaction arising from a lack of occupation or excitement.

Busters Spring Update 2021 Happy Spring! The roses are blooming in the backyard and the air is filled with the scent of orange blossoms. Seems like a re-birth after this past horrible year. Even with the COVID lockdown and resulting disruptions, the Busters Project sailed thru it all in strong shape. Requests were down only slightly from previous years but, again this year, due to the generosity of recipients, we were able to donate $3500 to the breast cancer support program at Sharp Memorial Hospital. In the first four years of the project, we’ve been able to donate a total of $8900 to Sharp! We should all be proud of such accomplishment! THANK YOU!
During the lockdown (over a year for us at Redwood Terrace) we spent the time reassessing and restructuring the Busters Project. So now, in addition to the Knitting Trio, we’re creating a website and have a new member on the team. Kathleen Christenson has joined us as Advocate to help reach out to other organizations working with breast cancer survivors to spread the word that Busters are available to any survivor who requests a pair. The Busters Project is based upon personal connection with other survivors and, with our prolific knitting team, we can serve many more survivors than we’ve been able to reach so far. So, again, we’re inviting everyone who’s already received her Busters to join the Advocates’ Team to help spread the word. Satisfied recipients are the best reference of all! We’ve attached our redesigned flyer and are asking that you take copies with you the next time you see the chiropractor, go in for your mammogram, have a massage or go to the salon or spa or go to any women’s groups you attend, and ask if they would post the flyer. The bright spot in this COVID lockdown? Lots of time to create Busters! Our inventory is overflowing. If you’ve been thinking it’s time for a new pair of Busters, here’s your chance. Just email your NAME – MAILING ADDRESS – CUP SIZE and I’ll get them in the mail at once.
Introducing Busters: For too long, the only post-mastectomy options offered to breast cancer survivors have been heavy silicone prosthetics or surgical reconstruction. At last, the survivors themselves have stepped up to create another option, designed from their own perspective to offer a comfortable and properly fitting accessory for breast cancer survivors. Called BUSTERS, they are hand knit by a trio of artisans (all survivors). They are lightweight, soft, machine washable and can be worn soon after surgery.

PROBLEM SOLVED BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT This Groupon doesn't work. Can I get a refund?
Diane Luedtke's Groupon for TSA PreCheck doesn't work. Can she persuade the company to refund it?
Q: I purchased two Groupon vouchers for a TSA PreCheck application fee. I followed the directions on the voucher, entering one code to register at the TSA site. At the end of the registration process, the site asked me to bring a credit card, money order, or cashier's check to the airport for payment.
That did not sound right to me. I scheduled my appointments at my local airport. My husband and I made the trip to the airport and completed the process for applying for TSA PreCheck. At the completion of mine, I handed in the voucher and after the gentleman entered into his computer, it came back as "already used." I was shocked. I gave him the second voucher and that worked successfully. But my husband had to complete the process and pay by credit card.
When I returned home, I contacted Groupon by phone and was basically told that all sales were final, even on a defective purchase. I sent an email and they offered a replacement code which I have no use for. Can you help me get my money back? -- Diane Luedtke, Jim Thorpe, Pa. A: You should have received a valid code for your TSA PreCheck. But when it didn’t work, Groupon should have refunded your purchase.
TSA PreCheck is a trusted traveler program that lets you get screened faster (shorter lines, no full-body scans). It costs $85 for a five-year membership, but I’ve always thought the government shouldn’t charge you for screening at the airport — something that should be included in the taxes tacked onto the cost of your ticket. But I digress.
Looking at the details of your case, I don’t think you could have done anything differently. It seems that there was a glitch in the system that prevented one of the two TSA PreCheck Groupons you purchased from working. You had no way of knowing that the Groupon wouldn’t work until you arrived for your interview at the airport. Then, you tried to reach someone at Groupon who could fix the issue in real-time. But that proved to be impossible. So you ended up paying full price for your husband’s TSA Precheck. Groupon’s terms and conditions are pretty confusing, at least when it comes to nonworking vouchers. It looks like you had two hours to
Page 6
April 29, 2021
cancel your purchase under Groupon’s terms, but what if the thing doesn’t work?
I don’t agree with Groupon’s contention that ‘all sales are final.’ Groupon had an obligation to send you a code that worked. When it didn’t, it should have made arrangements with the TSA to send you a working code or agreed to refund your purchase. In your case, Groupon tried to issue a new coupon code for PreCheck after you had already paid the $85 application fee (and also after you had been approved for the program). Of course, no one needs two TSA Prechecks, so by then, it was too late. The offer from Groupon was useless.
You could have reached out to one of <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/groupon-customerservice-contacts/">Groupon’s executive contacts</a>. I list them on my consumer-advocacy site, Elliott.org. I contacted Groupon on your behalf. It issued a refund, plus a $25 credit to make up for your inconvenience.

BY CHRISTOPHER ELLIOTT Where's the refund for my upgrade on Cathay Pacific?
How long does it take to get a refund for an upgrade that never happened? Margaret Carroll has been waiting four months for hers. How do you move things along?
Q: I recently requested a refund from Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) for an air ticket I purchased through them for a Cathay Pacific flight. I had booked a roundtrip premium economy ticket from San Francisco to Hong Kong. A representative from OAT air department recommended this upgrade to premium economy because Cathay Pacific had a special rate. I paid OAT an extra $1,300 for this upgrade.
On the flight from San Francisco to Hong Kong, I was not seated in premium economy. The reason for this action by Cathay Pacific was a change in aircraft. Even at check-in online, the change in seating was not revealed. I was very upset and stressed over this. I paid good money to be seated in a seat of my choice for this 12-hour flight. I have contacted OAT several

Public Safety Power Shutoffs
Devastation from California’s wildfires has been at record levels in recent years. Last year our wildfire season resulted in over 4 million acres burned in 9,600 fires -- 31 people died. The economic costs to homeowners, utilities, ratepayers, insurers and local governments has been catastrophic.
While electric utility infrastructure has accounted for less than ten percent of wildfires historically, downed power lines have been responsible for about half of California’s most destructive fires. As a result, in 2012 the California Public Utilities Commission granted electric utilities authority to shut off power during excessive wind or heat events to protect public safety. As we all know, these Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) have been increasingly common during extreme Santa Ana winds. Statewide, between 2013 and the end of 2019, California averaged 8,000 wildfires per year, and the state’s three largest energy companies, including Southern California Edison and SDG&E, conducted 33 PSPS “de-energizations.” In the past, preemptive power shutoffs were often confined largely to rural areas. Today however, housing has spread into many rural areas,
with more than a third of our housing now located in the “wildlandurban interface,” meaning power shutoffs are now impacting more Californians. Obviously, wildfires result in lost lives, economic devastation, and massive property loss. But power shutoffs are also extremely disruptive, costly, and in many cases can be dangerous for those relying on electric power for their health and safety. But when planned outages occur, here are some links that will help: For SDG&E customers, sign up for PSPS notifications and more information at: https://www.sdge.com/public-safety-power-shutoff
For SCE customers, please visit: https://www.sce.com/wildfire/psps Fighting wildfires remains a top personal priority This session my Caucus and I will continue to do all we can to reduce this severe threat to life and property. Two COVID-19 Studies
We’ve all heard the phrase, ‘Follow the science,’ over the last year. While it may sound good, at times I’ve questioned if those at our State level truly are following the science. A study released this week examined more than 48,000 Kaiser Permanente patients in Southern California and the effects regular exercise has on their COVID-19 complications. The results, “Patients with COVID19 who were consistently inactive had a greater risk of hospitalization admission to the ICU and death due to COVID-19 than patients who were consistently meeting physical activity guidelines.”
We’ve known for a while that it is extremely rare to contract COVID19 outside and that if you want to truly follow the science, we should be promoting physical activity. Instead, the Governor closed beaches, playgrounds, youth sports, gyms, and other activities forcing people inside, putting more lives at greater risk. Another phrase that you may have heard when it comes to the media is, ‘If it bleeds it leads.’ A recent study published by National Bureau of Economic Research looked at the
coverage of COVID-19 in the United States compared to other countries. What they found was that ‘about 87 percent of Covid coverage in national U.S. media last year was negative. The share was 51 percent in international media, 53 percent in U.S. regional media and 64 percent in scientific journals.’
Unfortunately, bad news sells when it comes from major media outlets, (CNN, Fox News, NBC, etc.) but now more than ever shows the importance for local journalism, fact-based stories and maybe even some positivity!

times. They keep telling me that it takes time to get a refund from the airlines. I believe that going on four months is way too long a wait. I desire a refund from OAT to my account of $650, half of the round trip ticket. Can you help me? -Margaret Carroll, Livermore, Calif.
A: If you had a ticket in premium economy, you should have sat in premium economy. Cathay Pacific could have been more proactive about notifying you, and the refund should have been automatic and much, much faster. But an aircraft change -- or "equipment change" in airline parlance -is not a bait-and-switch. It happens fairly routinely when a plane isn't working correctly or the airline needs to accommodate more passengers. Still, I think Cathay Pacific might have alerted you when you checked in and offered other options, such as rescheduling you on a flight with premium economy.
By the way, premium economy is kind of a misnomer. All economy class seats should have a minimum amount of legroom and amenities, particularly on a 12-hour flight. Premium economy is a lie, if you ask me. They should just call it economy class and get rid of the tiny seats that you had to endure for half a day.
You were correct to contact Overseas Adventure Travel in writing. It sold you the Cathay Pacific upgrade. And you're also right that four months is way too long to wait. If you're still on hold after a month, you can escalate your case in writing to a manager. I list the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/grand-circletravel/">names, numbers and emails for Overseas Adventure Travel</a> on my nonprofit advocacy site, Elliott.org. But ultimately, this refund was up to Cathay Pacific. I should note that your trip happened before COVID-19 -- so no pandemic excuses! You could have contacted Cathay Pacific or appealed to a manager. I list <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/cathaypacific/">executive contacts for Cathay Pacific</a> on my site, too. I reached out to Overseas Adventure Travel and Cathay Pacific on your behalf. Five months after you requested a refund, you finally received it. The Busters Project is not a charity. The concept behind this is to offer them as a personal gift from one survivor to another, and it is strictly volunteer and non-profit. The Busters Project has now evolved into a nationwide grassroots survivor’s movement with over 1100 recipient/members. Most of our recipients have joined us as cosponsors to “pay forward” the costs for the next pairs sent out. Any surplus funds at the end of the year are donated to the breast cancer support program of a local hospital.
We rely entirely on word-of-mouth to reach our recipients, so please help spread the word – it seems that everybody knows somebody who is a breast cancer survivor and would appreciate a pair of Busters. The Nation’s First Businesswoman Dynamo
It’s hard to determine whether Marjorie Merriweather Post was one of America’s first businesswoman dynamos or one of the nation’s largest female philanthropist. The first begat the latter – nonetheless she was truly outstanding. She was the daughter of breakfast cereal mogul Charles William "C. W." Post. Born March 15, 1887, Marjorie Post took up the company’s leadership in 1914, when her father passed at age of 59. Marjorie and her father worked side-by-side. Together they were American pioneers in manufacturing corn flakes, (Post Toasties), rivaling the Kellogg brothers’ breakfast food company down the street in Battle Creek, Michigan.
The Post company became a pioneer in the prepared-food industry. When she inherited the company, Marjorie became the innovator and developer of what turned into General Foods, one of the world’s largest business empires. In 1895, C. W. Post founded his company after attending the Kellogg health clinic. Post was inspired by John H. Kellogg’s health diet. After investing $78, Post set up operations in a barn in Battle Creek, developing his own breakfast recipe producing “Grape Nut Flakes.” His next product was “Postum,” a breakfast beverage alternative to coffee made from wheat and molasses. The first Post cereal was Grape-Nuts developed in 1897. In 1904 he began producing corn flakes and in 1908 he renamed the product “Post Toasties.”
In 1924, when C.W. died from appendicitis, his firm was known as the “Postum Cereal Company.” Marjorie became the wealthiest woman in the nation, inheriting $20 million (equivalent to $526 million in today’s dollars). In 1929, following several food corporations, she renamed the company “General Foods.” Later, along with her second husband, financier E.F. Hutton, Marjorie began expanding the business and acquiring other American food companies such as Hellmann's Mayonnaise, Jell-O, Baker's Chocolate, Maxwell House Coffee and many other well-known brands. While taking a voyage on her pri-
vate yacht, she came across the revolutionary innovations of Clarence Birdseye, who had developed a new way of preserving food by freezing. Post foresaw the future advantages of frozen food and bought Birdseye's company which eventually became the leading producer in its category. She led the General Foods conglomorate to the point in 1985, General Foods to the Philip Morris Companies for $5.6 billion, the largest private non-oil acquisition to that time.
Marjorie became a leading socialite and philanthropist using much of her fortune to collect art which is now on display at Hillwood, the museum, formally her estate in Washington, D.C. Post also was known for her luxurious home mansion, Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, Florida, now the home of former President Donald Trump.
During World War I in 1917, Marjorie funded a U.S. Army hospital in France. Starting in 1929 and throughout the Great Depression, she financed and personally supervised a Salvation Army feeding station in New York. She also donated the cost of the Boy Scouts of America headquarters in Washington, D.C. In 1971, she was among the first three recipients of the “Silver Fawn Award,” presented by the Scout organization. The 425acre Lake Merriweather at Goshen Scout Reservation in Goshen, Virginia, is named in her honor.
Among her many philanthropic gifts, she donated $100,000 to the National Cultural Center in Washington D.C., which today is known as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. In 1955, she contributed $100,000 to the National Symphony for free concerts that led to the beginning of the “Music for Young America” concerts. The Merriweather Post Pavilion, an outdoor concert venue in Columbia, Maryland, is named for her. Some of Post's personal jewelry is historic and legendary. She bequeathed the jewels to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., which is now on display. Among the collection is the Napoleon Diamond Necklace and the Marie Louise Diadem, a 275-ct (55 g) diamond-and-turquoise necklace and tiara that Napoleon I gave to his second wife, Empress Marie Louise. Also a pair of diamond earring weighing 14 carat and 20 carat, once belonging to Marie Antoinette; the Blue Heart Diamond, a 30.82caret heart-shaped blue diamond ring; and an emerald-diamond necklace and ring, once belonging to Mexican emperor Maximilian.
Marjorie Merriweather Post died Sept. 12, 1973 at the age of 86. Add up all of the company brands she acquired, developed and owned out of the American daily life there would be left a big domestic hole. She died as one of America’s mostsuccessful and fascination business persons. She didn’t just inherit, she built an American dynasty.

Control" by Friedrich Gomez). USA Newspaper just published its "Battle for America's Soul." Over two months ago The Paper published its cover story "The Battle for the Soul of America" again written by Friedrich Gomez back in Feb. this year expressing similar concerns.
The shocking truth that mainstream's Far Left news media "gaslights" Americans and gives only one side of race-related stories was further revealed by The Paper in their recent cover on Dr. Seuss, again written by Friedrich Gomez (I never knew the hidden details!). And the racial controversy of naming sports teams and military equipment was clarified in The Paper (Military Helicopters, 4/4/21) again by Friedrich Gomez). And the REAL hidden facts behind the Covid-19 outbreak was again scooped in The Paper last year (China's Bioweapon, 9/24/21 by Friedrich Gomez on key items never reported!!). The encroaching dangers of Defunding the Police and thus allowing for anarchy was reported in The Paper over 5 years ago!! (PC Gone Wrong, 9/15/16 again by Friedrich Gomez). And the almost ridiculous warning that even the color "White" may someday become offensive has (already happened) as reported in The Paper (PC Out of Control 8/27/20 again by Friedrich Gomez).
Friedrich has written several PC articles and also on declassified government documents. Facts that astounded me! But never reported! Except in The Paper. All we ask for is balanced news and Friedrich gives us that. He "Drains the Swamp" with a 'voice' of true America. Friedrich, rightfully, has a most powerful grassroots following here and online.
God bless him. And bless you Lyle E. Davis (owner & publisher of The Paper) for allowing him the right of Free Speech. All we wish for is peace, and the truth which goes along with it. The pump attendant, obviously knows nothing about golf, greets him in a typical Irish manner completely unaware of who the golfing pro is."Top of the mornin' to yer, sir" says the attendant. Tiger nods a quick "hello" and bends forward to pick up the nozzle. As he does so, two tees fall out of his shirt pocket onto the ground.
"What are those?, asks the attendant. "They're called tees" replies Tiger.
"Well, what on the god's earth are dey for?"inquires the Irishman. "They're for resting my balls on when I'm driving,"says Tiger.

Stay up-to-date on the San Marcos Creek Project
As we head into summer, which typically offers ideal construction conditions, San Marcos Creek Project work is ramping up! The project schedule has been updated to reflect the winter delays that resulted from utility work, weather events and avoidance of federally-protected birds found in the area. The construction team continues to make solid progress and anticipates the project will be complete by spring 2023. The team remains committed to keeping our community informed about project milestones.
Take advantage of the city’s text alerts to get convenient road closure/construction updates sent directly to your phone! To sign up, text the keyword SMCreek to 484848. Text alerts will help you stay informed about driving safely around the construction site. Many thanks to all of our community members for your patience and courtesy throughout this important project. To learn more about the Creek Project, visit: san-marcos.net/creek.
Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,
When you read this, Earth Day will have come and gone. In my mind, everyday should be Earth Day. That is not to say that one day a year that brings awareness to the condition of the planet we live on is a bad thing. But I liken it to one shouldn’t be good one day a week when they go to church. It should be more of a lifestyle or an awareness of conduct that we carry with us all the time. For those of us who do or went to church or some sort of worship periodically, we know it is hard to be “good” the other 6 days. The same is true for many things in our life, e.g. watching what we eat, doing exercise, studying, etc. But like or not, we are the stewards of the earth and our actions have meaning and consequence. So, since we are in the “Earth Day” season, let’s remember that Mother Earth is counting on us to keep it in good shape. Let’s also remember that working together there is nothing we can’t solve. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi,
Mac, Paul P. McNamara Mayor of Escondido pmcnamara@escondido.org

would continue to earn its income from designing, building and manufacturing PCs for most of the next 25 years.
Paul & Nome Van Middlesworth, The Computer Factory
www. thecomputerfactory.net "San Diego's Best Computer Store 2015-2020" Union Tribune readers poll A blast from the past.
This week, just for giggles we decided to reprint a column we did exactly ten years ago. Here it is. Apples 2010 sales topped 60 billion dollars with a 6 billion dollar profit. First quarter 2011 numbers are up another 25%. How did a niche market PC seller become such a world-class phenomena? It’s an interesting story.
Apple began marketing PCs in late 70s. By the time we moved to Sunnyvale, Ca in 1980 Apple was already one of the success legends in “The Silicon Valley” along with, Atari, Amdahl and many others. Personal computers were coming of age and Apple was the dominant player. Apple, the computer company,
In 1982 IBM entered the PC business and overnight replaced Apple as the number one PC maker. Two years later IBM was overtaken by the “clones’ Dell, Compaq, Gateway and others and began its long decline and eventual exit from the PC business. Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his management team could “see the handwriting on the wall.” DOS/Windows PCs were taking over the world and Apple needed a survival strategy. Apple already had a loyal following among professional graphics artists and teachers, who had used Apple PCs in the classroom, but Apple needed to build a larger loyal user base. If Apple could create an emotional connection with a large enough niche segment of society they wouldn’t need to worry about things like price, performance and quality. In a flash of pure marketing genius Steve Jobs and Apple found a way. Their iconic 1984 TV ad in the third quarter of the super bowl set the tone for the “Applemania” that to this day defines Apples public appeal. With that amazing TV ad Apple reached out and connected with millions of anti-establishment fans. Restless youth, artists, political activists, actors, vaguely dissatisfied folks living lives of quiet desperation, right brained, left handed folks who considered themselves different or special, all these found happiness and kinship within the cult of “Appleheads.” Jobs had nailed it. These “Appleheads” or “Fanboys” were willing to pay premium prices for Apple products. Apple PCs, like Gucci handbags, set one apart from the hoi polloi.
The Appraiser’s Corner
Lunch boxes are collectibles that have soared tremendously in popularity recently. Throughout history people have always needed to transport food, but of course, nobody ever dreamed that these metal boxes could be worth a fortune.
There are a number of characteristics that combine to make the lunch box a collectible. The lunch box represents childhood, television, food, school, parents, and more. As so many of these boxes were lost, it has become a treasure.
It is hard to believe, but some of these boxes are sold for more than $10,000. The first “character” lunch box was the dream child of Walt Disney who put Mickey Mouse on a lunch box in 1935. But it was really television, not movie cartoons or comic strips that put lunch boxes on the map. In the early 1950s Hopalong Cassidy of television fame gave Aladdin Industries the rights to replicate him on the blue and red lunch boxes and on the thermos inside. Shortly thereafter, the American Thermos Bottle Company did the same with Roy Rogers.
However, it was really Superman who coveted the most attention. From the mid 1950s to the mid 1980s, Aladdin and the American
Thermos Bottle Company dominated the market with their Superman boxes. Both companies did, however, produce more than Superman boxes. During that time other popular characters on boxes included Davy Crockett, Howdy Doody, Rat Patrol, Care Bears, Star Wars and Star Trek characters, Miss America, and The Flying Nun. The last of the big movie characters to don a lunch box was probably the Sylvester Stallone character “Rambo”. Chances are at the end of the lunch box era came about because the boxes became too costly, and often they were lost. They were also used in brawls by those innocent young darling children, and found to be dangerous.
Nonetheless, collectors of lunch boxes are often called “boxers” or “paileontologists”, and take their collecting very seriously. As a whole, the most valuable collectible theme character is Superman, followed by Hopalong Cassidy, Howdy Doody, and Roy Rogers.
As a single box, many collectors claim that the most desirable box is the “Toppie” Top Value lunch box of the 1950s and 1960s. These boxes, of which only 10-12 is known to exist today, were distributed in the Dayton, Ohio area. When a shopper filled three Top Value books with stamps, he/she
Apple has been stuck with a 5% to 7% share of the PC market for years. In 2005 Apple abandoned their unique architecture and incorporated the industry standard Intel CPU architecture in their computer products and became essentially a Dell or HP with a different operating system. Secondly, like Dell and HP, Apple stopped making products and became a marketing organization for Chinese high tech products. Today Foxcomm and Inventec design and manufacture the products sold with the Apple logo. Apple enjoys a completely unique advantage shared by no other competitor in high tech products. The “fanboy” phenomena. Apple loyalists queue up days before the release of any new product or upgrade. It is said the Apple could take an Etch-A –Sketch, slap an Apple logo on it and sell 5 million at $500 a pop in the first week. Being first to market with the smart phone and tablets coupled with fanati-
cal customer loyalty has paid huge dividends for Apple in the past two years but there are clouds on the horizon. Both the i-Phone and the i-Pad are threatened by competition from the many companies that are providing more capable devices employing the Android operating system from Google. Steve Jobs himself was concerned enough to rise form his sickbed and deliver an anti-Google rant on March 3rd at the introduction of the iPad II.
Perhaps history will repeat itself. Over 30 years ago Apple made a fortune being first to mass market a personal computer only to be eclipsed when Microsoft made DOS and Windows available to worldwide PC makers. Google, with its Android operating system may well be the new Microsoft pushing Apple and its communications/Internet i products back into Apples traditional role as a niche market provider.

was given a choice of gifts. Many of the shoppers chose the lunch box, which was eventually lost or heavily used, and thrown away. Anybody who owns the Toppie lunch box undoubtedly knows its value and desirability.
Lunch boxes will continue to increase in value. They are also visually appealing, and are lightweight, and easily movable. With the advent of the baby boomers, in particular, they are extremely nostalgic. As many people are not aware that they are so collectible, it is quite possible that you might be able to pick one up at a swap meet from an unsuspecting vendor. Chances are it would be the highlight of your day, maybe even your week.

Here are some tips to help ease the transition. Check out the upcoming seminar Preparing Your Pets for PostPandemic Life led by certified separation anxiety expert Tina Flores to learn even more tips, tricks and management tools! https://secure.sdhumane.org/site/R? i=WcJVCIyFVPqeISTjQ0ZCIw Begin leaving the house regularly for short periods, 10-15 minutes, several times a day and slowly increase the time you’re gone. Chuckles Cont. from Page 13
"In Hillary Clinton's new book 'Living History,' Hillary details what it was like meeting Bill Clinton, falling in love with him, getting married, and living a passionate, wonderful life as husband and wife. Then on page two, the trouble starts." ~ Jay Leno "Hillary Clinton, our junior senator from New York, announced that she has no intentions of ever, ever running for office of the President of the United States. Her husband, Bill Clinton, is bitterly disappointed. He is crushed. There go his dreams of becoming a two-impeachment family." ~ David Letterman
"Last night, Senator Hillary Clinton hosted her first party in her new home in Washington. People said it was a lot like the parties she used to host at the White House. In fact, even the furniture was the same." ~ Jay Leno "CNN found that Hillary Clinton is the most admired woman in America. Women admire her because she's strong and successful. Men admire her because she allows her husband to cheat and get away with It." ~ Jay Leno
"Hillary Clinton is the junior senator from the great state of New York. When they swore her in, she used the Clinton family Bible – the one with only 7 commandments." ~ David Letterman Met a fairy today who said she would grant me one wish. "I want to live forever," I said.
"Sorry," said the fairy, "I'm not allowed to grant wishes like that!" "Fine," I said, "then I want to die after Congress gets their heads on straight!" "You crafty bastard!" said the fairy.
While creating women, God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the world. And then He smiled and made the earth round. KNOCK KNOCK! ME: Who is it?
POLICE: It’s the police!
ME? What do you want?
POLICE: We just want to talk. ME: How many are you.
POLICE: There’s just two of us. ME: Then alk to each other. Mainproject for today:
Find my invisible tape.
My therapist told me to write letters to people I hate and then burn them. Did that.
My problem?
I don’t know what to do with the Letters.
