Volume 49 - No. 18
By Richard “Pete” Peterson
We landed at Maasai Mara airstrip to much excitement. Ping, our new guide, introduced himself quickly, grabbed our luggage, tossed it into the truck and said, “The lions are about to make a kill. Let’s hurry.” Just like reality TV! We jolted across the savanna in hot pursuit of the hunter. In the The Paper - 760.747.7119

distance a cloud of dust rose, and maybe thirty seconds later we saw a lioness padding across the savanna. “She missed,” Ping said. It was a spectacular day, sunny, with the ever-present African wind stirring shrubs and kicking up dust. We were surprised at the amount of wild life we saw. Within minutes we saw rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, water buffa-
lo and literally hundreds of scavenger birds including the rare Ginnent Antelope plus Oryx, hartebeest (rare), and of course, the ubiquitous Kori Bustard. Seeing the Marsh Pride of lions was like revisiting friends since we too were fans of National Geographic’s television shows on them. We parked at a fallen tree, to watch a young male sleep, stretched out on a limb.
Africa! - See Page 2
Ping, like all the guides assigned to us, loved his work. All eagerly shared their knowledge on everything African. Ping went into great detail on the vicious nature of water buffalo, while a particularly menacing one lowered his horns and trotted toward our vehicle. When the animal was maybe fifty paces away, Ping hit the ignition and we backed away. Too close for me. (Later, we learned he had

been seriously injured by a water buffalo as a young man.) Perhaps he was showing his dominance now.
On the way to the lodge, we encountered more game than I could record: Thompson and Grant’s gazelles, water buck, crocodiles, baboons, monkeys, hyenas, zebra, giraffe, elephants, topi (rare), Spring Bok, ostrich, green-spotted wood doves, brilliant blue starlings and many other beautiful birds.
Nancy Anne was pensive on the ride. “Hasn’t it been fantastic? Not just the animals, but the different terrain, and the people and their way of life.” The visit to the Maasai manyatta the day before affected her deeply. “Can you imagine raising a family in a dung and mud hut with no electricity or running water? No in-door plumbing, no medical care? Your kids play in cow manure all day and those that survive at nine or ten are herding sheep and cattle all day, every day.” She paused. “Those kids yesterday walk 3 miles to school. If elephants are around, they come home.” She shakes

An example of “roughing it” at Mara Plains Camp
The day we left Escondido, President Obama addressed the nation with plans to repel ISIS, or ISELor ISL, the vicious, ultra-violent terrorists of Syria, but I was more concerned that my beloved Cardinals had a precarious hold on first place in the National League Central and the Chargers lost to Arizona, 18 to 17. Would I be home in time for the baseball play offs? After all, some things are important. Vivid impressions of our Mara Plains visit abound: Jackals at a fresh Tommy gazelle kill and vultures descending by the 20’s and 30’s within minutes; a huge, old bull elephant living out his remaining days alone on the savanna, skin sagging, head bowed, eyes sad; 7 lions drink-

Q: 'With your life? Let me ask you this then officer. Do you have a room where you change your clothes in preparation for your daily duties?' A: 'Yes sir, we do!' Q: 'And do you have a locker in the room?' A: 'Yes, sir, I do'
Q: 'And do you have a lock on your locker?' A: 'Yes, sir.'
Q: 'Now, why is it, officer, if you trust your fellow officers with your life, you find it necessary to lock your locker in a room you share with these same officers?'
A: 'You see, sir, we share the building with the court complex, and sometimes lawyers have been known to walk through that room.’
The courtroom EXPLODED with laughter, and a prompt recess was called.

We had three guides on our safaris. First, was Konee at Ol Donyo Lodge. We met him in the shadow of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro. Impressive in his red Maasai robe, beaded and shiny jewelry, he’s proud of his heritage. A Christian, he is quite erudite and most knowledgeable of the game. He was quite personable, gladly sharing stories about his family, and very proud of his daughter, whom he hopes becomes educated and ‘fulfilled.’ We visited his village and saw firsthand how his people revere him.

Albert of Borana Lodge is learning his ‘craft’ so that someday he can open his own safari service with funds provided by his tribe. He has been a guide for over ten years. “Africa must become unified if we are to compete in the world,” he said. “Tribal disputes, arguments over small, inconsequential matters and long-smoldering tribal feuds only impede our progress. We have many resources to develop, but we fail to use them adequately. Our school system, agricultural methods and electrification of rural areas along with health care and better transportation systems must become priorities.”
Ping from Maasai Plains, was invited to help establish Maasai Land in Atlanta, Georgia, by Eisner, the Disney President himself. Ping spent 5 years in the States. He liked it, but found it tiring after a while, with our emphasis on competition. He is Maasai and worries that, “Our way of life will be wiped out within twenty years unless we change or outdate our ways.” His first child was born in a hospital with ‘clean’ instruments, but he is quick to say he married a ‘parent-chosen’ bride,

My viewpoints on Africa are quite similar to Albert’s. Africa must overcome tribal disputes and long-smoldering feuds that have led to genocide. Poaching must be stopped. Resources must be utilized to aid the people. Poverty is endemic, thus jobs and credit systems must be developed. Improved educational opportunities and modernized agricultural methods are needed. Rendezvous Revisited - We attended a Rendezvous this past Sunday the 40th anniversary of an accident free event that carries forward the tradiittion of the Rocky Mountain Rendezvous (in trapper jargon), an annual gathering (1825–1840) at various locations held by a fur trading company at which trappers and mountain men sold their furs and hides and replenished their supplies. The large fur companies put together teamster driven mule trains which packed in whiskey and supplies into a pre-announced location each spring-summer and set up a trading fair—the rendezvous—and at the season's end, packed furs out, normally the British Companies to Fort Vancouver in the Pacific Northwest, and to one of the northern Missouri River ports such as St. Joseph, Missouri, if an American
The Department of Insurance has revoked the license of insurance agent Alan Lucien Cerf, 69, who faces more than $49,600 in fines for defrauding seniors. Officials allege Cerf repeatedly convinced clients to surrender existing annuity policies and purchase new ones—a practice known as “churning”— which earned him additional commissions, but cost his clients huge surrender fees. These fees consumed much of the new annuity’s principal. "Agents have a fiduciary responsibility to their clients, and a moral obligation to help those who come to them for assistance, not take advantage of them,” said Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara. “It’s always a good idea for clients to check the status of their agent’s license and look out for any warning signs that their agent may not be acting in their best financial interest.” Each new annuity issued to Cerf’s clients had a lower value than the previous one. This practice also extended the maturity date of the annuities, sometimes past the client’s life expectancy. Additionally, each time Cerf’s clients surrendered their prior annuities and purchased new ones, Cerf would earn a sizeable commission. An Administrative Law Judge found that Cerf violated the California Insurance Code by recommending that at least three of his
clients, who were all over 65 years of age, purchase unnecessary replacement annuities in nine separate transactions. The department also revoked Cerf’s license due to his unlawful actions. Poway Shooting Suspect Involved in Escondido Arson?
Police are investigating whether the 19 year-old suspect, John T. Earnest, arrested for murder and attempted murder of congregants at a Poway synagogue might also be respnsible for a fire set by an arsonist in late March that targeted an Escondido mosque.
The 19-year-old was arrested Saturday after the synagogue shooting. The manifesto Earnest allegedly wrote speaks at length of antiSemitism. “I scorched a mosque in Escondido,” the manifesto says.
Authorities say they are now probing the manifesto as part of the larger investigation. Earnest, a Rancho Peñasquitos resident, is enrolled at Cal State San Marcos. President Karen Haynes confirmed his attendance and said in a statement that the school was cooperating with authorities. Earnest previously attended Mt. Carmel High School, where his father taught. San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said there was no record that Earnest had prior interaction with law enforcement. The investigation continues. In the valleys along the fast-moving creeks that crisscross Laikipia plateau, fed by snow melt from Mount Kenya, grows the famous Yellow Bark Acacia tree. We enjoyed a magnificent view of the lake and the surrounding hills. A large herd of water buffalo came to the lake, drank and then grazed on the hillside in the warm African sun. I left my seat for a moment. A few minutes later when I looked out, the herd had disappeared. Within moments, it reappeared across a far ravine, looking like black volcanic rocks against the green landscape. The wind is a constant here. The food was more than adequate, the help eager, Africa! Cont. on Page 6
Are you part owner of this Charlie's Restaurant?
We fly back to Newark Liberty International Airport on Wednesday but always enjoy our trips out here! After Sea World tomorrow and Mexico's Ensenada, we head home. But we'll be back in July.
We normally read your weekly paper online when we're back home (along with friends in New York), but we're lucky stiffs because we have actual hardcopies to take back with us. Do you know when your latest story will be online for our kin folk back home? They're chomping at the bit because I told them all about this current K9 story. Best wishes, the Maria Contreras Family from New Jersey, on vacation here.

Africa! Cont. from Page 5
but not totally competent, and the views spectacular.
We had an interesting horseback ride, seeing several giraffe mommas and their babies up close. Also, we came across herds of zebra, and many elephants (with babies). We also saw the rare hartebeest, black rhino, impalas and eland. On one of our game rides, we witnessed a water buck from maybe 20 feet. Much too close for comfort, particularly while Albert, our guide told of his narrow escape from one, and how we too, could remove our clothes while running, and throw them at him!
Our hike was quite challenging high altitude, rocky, hilly terrain, thorn bushes and a steep, winding path. Our destination was Pride Rock, as seen in the movie, “The Lion Story.” Our guide was a Maasai warrior armed with an AK-47, wearing cammies with two ammo belts draped across his chest and a large knife at his belt, to protect us from the animals. After three hours of traversing the rough landscape, we fished in a small water hole, using bacon as bait and screws as sinkers. I caught one, as in one, tilapia!
On our way to the airstrip the next day, we saw two male lions and four rhinos plus numerous zebra, giraffe, gazelle and other animals. The airstrip is located on the equator. We flew out over fertile-looking farm land planted in row crops. The house and yards were ringed by large hedges. Many had swimming pools and some had private airstrips or helicopter landing pads. Next stop Mara Plains, Masai Mara, Kenya.
Ol Donyo Lodge: On the Exciting Continent of Africa Ol Donyo Lodge: A Kenyan Delight Not to be Missed
We watched a vee of Mallards rise up out of the mist over Lake Hodges and wing their way into the clear blue sky. Not as exciting as a game ride on the Maasai Mara, perhaps, but we were home after our safari in Kenya, Africa. She Who Makes My Tepee Happy, put together another fabulous trip: 3 days and 4 nights at ol Donyo Lodge in the private Mbirikani Group Ranch of Maasailand, as well as stops at Borano Lodge, Lakaipia Hills and Mara Plains on the Masai Mara. At the air strip near ol Donyo Lodge, Konee, our senior Maasai Warrior guide in his red robe and beads greeted us. In perfect English, he suggested a stop under a shade tree for coffee and peanut butter cookies while he gave us an introduction to our adventure. A Thompson’s gazelle it’s small white tail in almost constant motion, grazed nearby, a herd of wildebeest and zebra a four iron shot away. “They have a symbiotic (!) relationship. The wildebeest eat the tall grass and the zebra feed on the short grass.”
Within minutes we jolted off in the Toyota Land Cruiser, Konee at the wheel. On our ride to ol Donyo, we observed the gerenuk antelope (rare), topi, tiny dik dik and their even smaller babies, giraffe, wild boar, eland, Oryx and, of course, the ubiquitous Kori Bustard, the largest flying bird on the planet. On the horizon stood snow-capped iconic Mount Kilimanjaro. At the Lodge, we were greeted by Ray and Alyssa Wyatt, our hosts and their magnificent staff.
We chowed down on Ray’s tasty salads and hot bread as we watched magnificent bull elephants at the nearby water hole, guinea hens at their feet, giraffes nibbling thorn and acacia trees, while eland and Oryx wandered by and monkeys played in nearby trees. After a refreshing dip in our infinity pool (where a baboon joined Nancy for a cold drink!), Konee Africa! Cont. on Page 9
nimal Stewardship
Since joining the Legislature I have authored, co-authored and supported numerous bills aimed at protecting pets and wildlife. Fortunately, most of this legislation is now law.
My bills include legislation that created the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Voluntary Fund, allowing taxpayers to check off contributions on their tax returns to support injured or sick wildlife. Another bill prohibits the sale or transfer of shelter animals to research facilities for experimentation or testing. I co-authored legislation limiting the use of mile-long gill nets and encouraging the transition to modern, less destructive techniques for harvesting coastal fisheries. I also co-authored legislation requiring any public or private college or university that uses dogs or cats for research to offer those animals for adoption once they are no longer needed, along with a bill that indemnifies good Samaritans who break into hot cars to rescue trapped animals. Another co-authored bill bans cosmetics manufactured or developed using animal testing, and this session I am co-authoring AB 128 to prevent the sale of wild horses for slaughter when purchased at public auction.
Livin’ Large in San Marcos
There are over a dozen restaurants that serve breakfast in San Marcos. From a $2 breakfast sandwich at one of our many fast food joints to Sunday buffets at St Marks in “The Lake” or at Cocina Del Charro in Restaurant Row. Each venue has a niche in our lives and each is suited for its purpose. Mama Kats, Pegah's, Ihop and Denny’s, each are unique in its own way and each is perfectly suited for one of our moods or events. Tom’s Famous Family Restaurant #22 at 1205 W San Marcos Blvd perfectly fits one of our breakfast moods. Tom’s is for that weekday when you have time for breakfast, but no-one feels like cooking or washing dishes. Perhaps you’re just bored with the breakfast stuff in your own fridge. You feel like bacon with your eggs and she wants biscuits and gravy with hers. You don’t feel like blowing $25 bucks for a fancy breakfast at one of the locals so what are you going to do. If you are lucky enough to be a “senior” the answer is to head for Tom’s and the $4.99 senior breakfast special.
Over the years I have supported legislation that bans puppy mill stores; that encourages adoption of stray animals from shelters; that requires the Department of Justice to report statistics on arrests for animal abuse, and that limits civil liability for first responders who provide first aid for dogs or cats. I love California's diverse, native wildlife. Back in the mid-1990's I was trained as a Project Wildlife Native songbird rehabilitator and have had the joy of raising many, many orphaned or injured songbirds and returning them to the wild. We are so blessed throughout our state to have amazing habitats and truly special native species. In so many ways, their well-being is our responsibility. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.
With your choice from a variety of breakfast combos and FREE coffee, the price is right. My favorite is two eggs, a hamburger patty, potatoes, toast and coffee. On a good day I might spend an extra buck to substitute cottage cheese for the potatoes. You place your order at the counter, pick up your number and your coffee, select a booth and wait for the server to bring your breakfast. The servers are courteous and friendly, the service is fast and the servings are generous. They will keep pouring the coffee until you cry uncle. A hearty and leisurely breakfast for two for $9.98 plus tax and tip; it’s our kind of place.

2nd Saturdays Free Art Lesson Features Texture Painting Create your very own Impasto Painting. The Education Department at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE) is hosting another free 2nd Saturday art lesson on Saturday, May 11th. Taking inspiration from Convergence/Convergencia artist, Dennis Ellman, this 2nd Saturday lesson will teach you techniques based on impasto painting, using affordable materials. Impasto is a technique used in painting, where paint is laid on an area of the surface in very thick layers, usually thick enough that the brush or painting-knife strokes are visible. Paint can also be mixed right on the canvas. When dry, impasto provides texture; the paint appears to be coming out of the canvas. Ellman’s work is based in the rich and full textures and colors of life, and relishes the discovery of new ways to portray elements of life with various textural mediums and new color combinations. 2nd Saturday is a free event, but donations are appreciated. There are two, 1-hour classes available: 10am and 11:15am. Space is limited and seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Lessons take place in Studio 2. For easy access, park near the Boys & Girls Club in the public parking lot off of Woodward Ave. and N. Escondido Blvd. and enter the stu-

The ‘World’s Most Beautiful Inventor’
She was a popular Hollywood and international film star, who not only was one of the great beauties on screen, but became an important inventor who greatly aided the Allied effort during World War II – a communications system still in use today. Born Hedwig Eva Maria Kiesler to a Jewish family on Nov. 9, 1914, the world would come to know her as: Hedy Lamarr.

costumes and one in particular, Terry Cooper, with handlebar mustache, Scots Tam-O-Shanter, and buckskin leggings, who stole the show as the most original looking “Mountain Man.” Busy weekend. We sandwiched in a quick trip to Los Algadones, Baja, Mexico, over Thursday and Friday, returning on Saturday night - then the next day off to the Black Powder Rendesvous. Next weekend, let’s you and me meet up at the great Air Show at Palomar Airport (they officially call it McClellan-Palomar Airport). They’ll have a B-17, which Evelyn and I have both flown as passengers, a B-24 and a P-51 Mustang as well s a lot of static displays and all kinds of books and memorabilia. Plenty of knowledgeable folks around to answer questions. And, yes, you may purchase rides in the B-17, B-24 and P-51, subject to availability. I’ve never flown in the P-51 - perhaps one day I shall have the opportunity.
What beautiful birds these aircraft are! What brilliant histories they have in defending our nation and helping us win WWII! Great machines piloted and crewed by great personnel! See you there?
Her early and brief film career in Germany included controversial nude and love-making scenes in the 1933 film “Ecstasy,”
In 1933, Lamarr married her first of six husbands, Max Mandl, a wealthy Austrian military arms merchant, who was very controlling. She often would accompany Mandl to business meetings where he conferred with scientists involved in military technology. These conferences became her introduction to the field of applied science which nurtured her talent in the scientific field. Mandl, himself half-Jewish, often entertained Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini at dinner parties, as well as selling arms and munitions to them.
After escaping the tyrannical Mandl in 1937, Lamarr fled to Paris where she met MGM’s Louis B. Mayer. The Hollywood mogul hired her, insisting she change her name to “Hedy Lamarr.” Upon arriving in Hollywood in 1938, Mayer promoted her as the "world's most beautiful woman."
Lamarr made 18 films from 1940 to 1949. After leaving MGM in 1945, she enjoyed her biggest success as Delilah in Cecil B. DeMille's “Samson and Delilah,” with Victor Mature -- the highest-grossing film of 1949.
At the beginning of the World War
II, Lamarr helped the U.S. war effort by selling War Bonds, but also by using her scientific knowledge. Lamarr began developing the invention for which she would become famous.
Lamarr co-invented the technology for “Spread Spectrum” and “Frequency Hopping” communications with composer/pianist George Antheil. The new technology became important to America's military during the War because it was used in controlling torpedoes. Today, those inventions have been incorporated into the modern Wi-Fi, CDMA and Bluetooth technology. Between films, Lamarr usually kept her technical mind busy by inventing to relieve her boredom. Among her earliest inventions were an improved traffic signal and a carbonated beverage. The beverage was not successful -- she claimed it tasted like Alka-Seltzer. The U.S. Navy used the WWII version of frequency hopping in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Her later years were not happy ones. In 1966, she was arrested for shoplifting in Los Angeles. The charges were eventually dropped. In 1991, she was arrested on the same charge in Florida, this time for $21.48 worth of laxatives and eye drops. Both charges were dropped upon her promise not to repeat the offenses.
In 1997, Lamarr and Antheil received recognition for their invention by the Electronic Frontier Foundation Pioneer Award and the Gnass Spirit of Achievement Bronze Award, which are given to individuals whose creative lifetime achievements in the arts, sciences, business, or invention fields have significantly contributed to society. Her technical contributions have been featured on the Science Channel and Discovery Channel. In 2014, Lamarr and Antheil were inducted into the National Inventor's Hall of Fame. For her movie contributions, Lamarr has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. At age 85, Lamarr died in Casselberry, Fla., on Jan. 19, 2000. In accordance with her last wishes, her son, Anthony Loder, took her ashes to Austria and spread them in the Vienna Woods. In 2014, she was given an honorary grave in Vienna's Central Cemetery.

COGG Luncheon Meeting on Tuesday, May 14th Wha’s the real story regarding free speech on college campuses? Gabriel Nadales is Leadership Institute’s California representative teaching students how to defend themselves from abusive leftist staff and other students at college. He is the Pacific Regional Coordinator covering California; he’s from Los Angeles, went to school at Citrus College in San Gabriel Valley, and has been politically active for 10 years. He was elected to the Student Senate for California Community Colleges, and was an active member of Young Americans for Liberty in which the chapter sued Citrus College and won a $110,000 settlement. In 2019 Gabriel was invited to the White House to watch President Trump sign an historic executive order to support free speech on college campuses. We hear so much from the media on this subject. It will be very interesting to hear from someone who has genuine experience in this matter and you will get the chance to hear this speaker at the next Conservative Order for Good Government (COGG) luncheon meeting. The meeting will be on Tuesday, May 14th, from 11:30am social with a buffet lunch at 12noon and ending at 1:30pm. The cost is $28/person for non-members. Reservations needed by Friday, May 10th. led us on an exciting early evening game ride, where we saw our first lions, the quite rare Serval cat, and a baby giraffe so new to the world she could not stand.
Our accommodations at the Lodge were superb. The food great. A secondary treat was when we met Konee’s children when he escorted us to a manyatta, where Maasai warriors stay with their mothers, as they prepare for Elderhood, (one of the four stages a Maasai advances through.) The Maasai ladies greeted us with song: “We welcome you to Kenya and our house. We have much to teach you and perhaps we can learn from you.” (Not an exact translation.) Inside the hut, a single fire burns, with little ventilation for the smoke to escape. There is no electricity,
no running water, no seating area. The man sleeps on a ‘bench’ of animal skin across a small room from the lady’s bed. The children sleep in a cubiclelike enclosure behind the woman, and is welcome wherever he or she wishes to go.
They had as many questions about us as we did about them. Nancy asked how long does it take to build a hut.
Answer: “If the wife is lazy, maybe 2 ½ weeks. If she loves her husband, maybe 10 days.”

By our standards, these huts of cow dung, grass, sticks and mud were a bit primitive. Health care is non-existent. We were saddened to learn Konee lost his wife in childbirth only a month earlier.

The highlight of our stay, if I must select one thing, was the candlelight 34th Anniversary Dinner, served on the patio, which Ray and Alyssa arranged. A beautiful cake was brought in by four servers in native dress, including our Maasai chef, dancing and singing. Wonderful.

Peanut Butter is a laid back guy who likes having his chin scratched and taking cat naps. If he can find a sunny spot to nap, that’s even better. He was transferred from another shelter through the FOCAS (Friends of County Animal Shelters) program.
The $100 adoption fee for Peanut Butter includes medical exams, vaccinations, neuter, and registered microchip. For more information call 760-753-6413, visit Rancho Coastal Humane Society at 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas, or log on to SDpets.org.
Zeus is a 1-year-old American Pit Bull Terrier looking for a caring home. He is a high-energy boy who would benefit from daily exercise. Zeus is very friendly and social with people, and he loves to make doggie friends, too. He was surrendered by his previous owner because he is a talented escape artist, so he will need a home with a secure yard and plenty of enrichment to keep him happy and healthy. His adoption fee includes his neuter, current vaccinations, permanent microchip identification, a certificate for a free veterinary exam, waived enrollment fee for medical insurance from PetFirst and a license for residents in the city limits of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, Escondido, Imperial Beach, Oceanside, Poway, San Diego, San Marcos, Santee, Solana Beach and Vista. Zeus is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Drive. To learn more about making him part of your family, please call (619) 299-7012.

APRIL SHOWERS AND MAY FLOWERS
Where I was born and reared, which was Michigan, we had a saying for spring, “April showers bring May flowers.” Unlike So. California, April was cold, wet, and dreary, but it did have showers. Then, when May came with its warmer weather, the woods, fields, and yards were filled with flowers. It was a marvelous time of the year. The cold weather and rain of April were soon forgotten with the beauty of flowers. In this exchange of rain for flowers, we have a life lesson. The adage: “Into everyone’s life some rain must fall”, which connotes a nega-
tive thought, there are the flowers, which is positive. Unfortunately, many seem to concentrate on the rain instead of the flowers. Why not enjoy the flowers with their beauty and fragrance? We have but to take a moment to examine where we put the emphasis. If we seek to enjoy the flowers, it will give us a deeper appreciation for life. The saying, “Stop and smell the roses” is our opportunity to get beyond the stresses and conflicts of life. It is not that the flowers eliminate the “rains” of life, but they certainly give us something else on which to focus. And who knows, but that the experience of seeing, enjoying, and sharing the beauty of flowers, could work a miracle of change from a negative and unhappy disposition to one of joy and appreciation. May is our month of flowers. There is so much beauty and enjoyment in it that it would be a shame to not make it a permanent part of our lives. “There are always flowers for those who want to see them.”(Henri Matisse) Pastor Huls

Off San Marcos to launch city service requests app
In summer, the City of San Marcos will launch a new app—the San Marcos City App—designed to give San Marcos residents a free real-time and simple way to use their mobile device to report community issues such as graffiti or potholes.
Until the app is ready for its public debut, visit the City’s website at www.sanmarcos.net/reportaconcern to let us know about debris in the roadway, graffiti, potholes or general community suggestions. We’ll take care of the rest!
Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido!
We had our third monthly mayor’s meeting this week, and I want to thank those who attended. I always appreciate our residents coming out and giving the city feedback. It helps us make Escondido and even better place to live.
One of the hot topics this week is the future direction of SANDAG. As many of you know, SANDAG has a focus in two general areas. One is housing and the other is transportation. I think we would all agree that transportation county wide needs a lot of work. For better or for worse, California embraced the car culture and public transportation, especially in San Diego, never reached the maturity it did in other cities. So, we are now at a fork in the road. One direction is to abandon any future road development, even those already promised in the past and move toward smarter public transportation technologies. This means more traffic. And the other direction is to finish what was planned and then move toward a public transportation system that takes advantage of technology. And all of them require money, probably lots of it. So, I would love to hear your opinion of where we should go. There are no easy answers so your opinion counts. Thank you. Semper Fi, Mac, Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido

Vista’s Business Renaissance
Economic Development is a top priority for the City of Vista. With the Ayers Hotel under construction in the Business Park, the new Honda dealership set to open soon on W. Vista Way, and the opening of the Restoration Hardware outlet store in North County Square, Vista continues to draw businesses that are reshaping the city and creating an attractive vibrant community.
In addition, many new restaurants, including Culichi Town, coming soon to Vista Village, have popped up in or around downtown. Two new craft breweries, Helia and Guadalupe, are also adding to the thriving Vista scene.
I am pleased with our growing economy and we will continue strengthening it and bringing new jobs to the community.
Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss Mental Health Resource Fair
In observance of Mental Health Awareness Month this May, the City of Oceanside will host a Mental Health Resource Fair, with the purpose of raising awareness of local mental health organizations and destigmatizing mental illness. This event will be held in the Civic Center Library Community Rooms on Thursday, May 9, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m.
Approximately one in five Americans experiences a mental illness in a given year. To make Oceanside residents more aware of free or low-cost mental health resources available to them, over 20 local organizations will be at the Mental Health Resource Fair. Free mental health classes and training will also be available, and will include Mental Health Screening; Suicide Prevention Training; Gentle Yoga; and Coffee with a Cop, with members from the Oceanside Police Department’s Psychiatric Emergency Response Team (PERT) and Homeless Outreach Team (HOT). Registration is required for classes and trainings. Can my PC live forever? Part II
If your applications include graphics design, animation, competition gaming, video transcription, audio editing, solids modeling, or day trading, we’d be happy to work with you to design and build a perfect workstation. If you are among the vast majority of users who don’t do any of that stuff, you probably are one of these. 1. You have a PC that perfectly fits your needs and you’re happier than a hog in a mud wallow. 2. You have a PC that doesn’t do what you want and you’re not sure whether to
The “hog in the wallow” guy doesn’t need our help, but number 2 and 3 folks do. Here’s the way it works. You bring in your old notebook or tower and while we’re booting it up, you tell us how you want to use it. We give it a complete physical while you wait. In just a few minutes we know if your PC can handle what you want to do, as is or with an upgrade. If it can’t “cut the mustard” for you, it still might be a good trade-in. Then we give you all your trade-in, upgrade, refurb and new PC information and options. Being a wise and thoughtful person you say, “I’ll need to talk it over with my wife/husband before we make a decision.” You go home and check out the deals at Costco, Fry’s, Best Buy and Amazon on the Internet. You’re back with the PC the next morning saying “let’s do it.” It doesn’t always work out that way; some guys don’t even talk to their wives. A refurb or upgraded notebook or tower PC, custom suited to the needs of the average user will typically costs between $150 and $350. Last week one of our long time business customers dropped off five desktop towers to be recycled. The hard drives were removed but otherwise they were as we had built them in 2010
with dual core CPUs, four GB of RAM, built in speakers and a DVD-R/W. We installed hard drives and reloaded Windows7 Pro and Microsoft Office. We put them on the shelf at $150. They play and record CDs and DVDs, stream live video, surf the WWW and smoothly run all Office applications. With your choice of Windows 7 or 10 Professional, these workstations are typically better than new retail PCs at $600.
7200 RPMs. The outer edge is traveling at 70 miles an hour. An SSD has no moving parts and is reading at 670 million miles an hour (the speed of light). The SSD is also more reliable and energy efficient. Folks with an HDD even in a new notebook or tower should consider upgrading to an SSD, At $100 to $150 it’s well worth it.
Chess
A ruby chess set of “The Frog Prince” sold in 2014 for $50,000.
We built my PC in 2011 with a dual core CPU and four GB of RAM; My PC is faster and more responsive that most new PCs but it has a secret weapon. We upgraded my HDD (hard disc drive) to a SSD (solid state drive). An HDD retrieves data by reading from a disc spinning at
One of the most popular games in the world today, and in fact for the past fifteen centuries, takes a lot of patience. In fact, much more patience than I have ever had.
Small wonder that I have never been any good at it. Not only does the game require patience, but also the ability to think several moves ahead. The origins of chess started in India in the 6th century during the Gupta Empire. The game was called “chaturanga” which means the “four divisions” (of the military). The “four divisions” were the infantry, cavalry, elephantry, and chariotry, which were represented by pieces that would later evolve into today’s pawn, knight, bishop, and rook.
The real message is that any PC built in the past ten years should be evaluated for your own use before you give up on it. In addition to the money you save you may also save time energy and frustration. Right now, upgrade components for five to ten year old PCs are inexpensive and plentiful. Remember we take trade-ins.
A set sold for $260,000 by Phillips Auctions. Yes. That’s right. Over a quarter million dollars for the chess set titled “Good Versus Evil”. The pieces were painted by Maurizio Cattelan, and naturally, depict historical figures who have been regarded as either good or evil. For some reason there is not a consensus on Sigmund Freud, who is actually on both sides. I do have to admit that I admire the creativity of the chess set designers. That is a skill in itself.
From India, chess was brought to Persia, and became part of a nobles’ education. From these, after the Islamic conquest of Persia, the game was introduced to Muslim countries. By the 9th century, chess had reached Western Europe as well as Russia.

A Japanese chess set made of ivory from the 1900s was auctioned for nearly $2500. However, a Mexican made set from the 1860s sold for over $5000, and depicted Archduke Emperor Maximilian of the Austrian Navy.
