Mother’s Day 2019 is upon us, and more phone calls will be made on this day than any other. Not Christmas, Father’s Day, or even Valentine’s Day, competes as a close second. Here in America, well over 130 million calls from cell and landline phones will connect us to our respective moms. The Paper - 760.747.7119

Mother’s Day is also the busiest day of the year for restaurants. According to the National Retail Federation and the U. S. National Restaurant Association, Mother’s Day is the most popular day for dining out. But it doesn’t stop there.
Mother’s Day is the life-blood for a variety of other business-
es. It is a huge, financial windfall which keeps our national economy healthy, and moms happy. It is a day when flower shops, boutiques, gift stores, greeting card companies, and specialty retail chains such as See’s Candy, and Hallmark stores, are placed on overtime status. Even financial juggernauts such as Master Card, Visa, and Discovery, all will do a massive issuance of gift cards on Mother’s Day, all for the sole

Just last year, in 2018, well over $23-billion was spent on moms

MILITARY & NATIONAL GOVERNMENT. Even all branches of our U. S. military and all facets of our Federal Government are busy on Mother’s Day – from foot soldier to General, seaman to Admiral, and congressman to U. S. President -- all of these personnel scramble to send loving wishes to dear ol’ mom.
GREETINGS FROM OUTER SPACE. There are 2,134 communication satellites orbiting the planet Earth at a height of over 20,000 miles; all handling private and government telecommunications. With well over 130-million telephone calls – just in the United States alone – all signaling and carrying “Happy Mother’s Day” greetings, these orbiting satellite dish antennas are kept busy on various frequencies. This includes transmissions from international calls, ship to shore phone connections, telecommunications from daughters and sons stationed overseas, as well as an avalanche of computer emails, all generated for the sole pur-
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! HELL EXPLAINED BY A CHEMISTRY STUDENT
The following is an actual question given on a University of Arizona chemistry mid-term, and an actual answer turned in by a student.
The answer by one student was so 'profound' that the professor shared it with colleagues via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well:
pose of expressing our undying love for mom.
AN UNPARDONABLE SIN! It’s one thing to miss someone on your Christmas card mailing list. It’s entirely different to forget to acknowledge mom on Mother’s Day. Forgetting to send a family member a holiday card is an oversight. Forgetting your mom on Mother’s Day -is sacrilegious!
“You might get away with not sending a card or a gift around the December holidays, but you don’t want to forget mom on her special day,” advises the Central Pennsylvania Postal Service to the national television and newspaper media across America. “Children, grandchildren and loved ones usually make sure they have something on the way when Mother’s Day rolls around,” says U. S. Postal Retail Manager, Anit Rutt-Guerriere. Fox Television News gives fair warning: “Postal Service Warns of Volume Increase Around Mother’s Day.”
And according to Fox News correspondent, Cale Ahearn:
Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving, which is unlikely. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let's look at the different religions that exist in the world today.
Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle's Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added. This gives two possibilities:
Bonus Question: Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)
1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until all Hell breaks loose. 2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until Hell freezes over.
First, we need to know how the mass of
If we accept the postulate given to me by Anabella during my Freshman year that, 'It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,' and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be
Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle's Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant. One student, however, wrote the following:
So which is it?
“The Postal Service is urging customers to send their Mother’s Day tributes early, as mail volume jumps about 20% in the week before the holiday.”
Leave it to mom, she is rightfully, still the center of the universe in our daily existence. THE ANCIENT ORIGINS OF MOTHER’S DAY. The concept or idea of honoring our mother on special days is as old as the hills. However, even modern scholars are not in full agreement as to where and when the concept of honoring mothers and/or motherhood originated. Antiquity experts have stated (but not without challenge) that Mother’s Day has its archaic roots with the Ancient Roman and Greek cultures. However, a diversion of scholarly thinking has challenged that theory by asserting earlier evidence of Mother’s Day occurring with the Ancient Egyptians. Either way, Mother’s Day has a long pedigree, morphing into its more modern versions today. MOTHER’S DAY ALMOST NEVER HAPPENED IN AMERICA. It’s hard to believe, but, Mother’s Day almost never
true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct.....leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Anabella kept shouting 'Oh my God.' THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+. ••••• The Farmer Sven is passing by Ole's hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Ole doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old green John Deere. Buttocks clenched, he performs a slow pirouette and gently slides off first the right strap of his overalls, followed by the left. He then hunches his shoulders forward and in a classic striptease move, he lets his overalls fall down to his hips revealing a torn and frayed plaid shirt.
Grabbing both sides of his shirt he rips it apart to reveal his stained tee shirt underneath. With a final flourish he tears the tee shirt from his body and hurls his baseball cap onto a pile of hay.
Having seen enough Sven rushes in and says, "What the heck are you doing, Ole?" "Jeez, Sven, ya scared the snot out of me," says an obviously embarrassed Ole.

happened here in America, at least officially as a holiday. In 1908, Congress first turned down the idea of Mother’s Day being an official day of observance. But 6 years later, President Woodrow Wilson did the right thing in 1914 by signing Mother’s Day into law, and to be held on the second Sunday in May, as decreed: “A national holiday to honor our mothers.”
Ironically, Anna Marie Jarvis, who advocated that Mother’s Day be made into an official holiday in America, later campaigned against it -- to have it removed. Why? Jarvis became deeply offended and disillusioned that her Mother’s Day idea became wrongfully exploited and over-commercialized by greedy businesses which turned her cherished dream into a nightmare of profiting on the sentiments of people and losing focus on the true meaning of Mother’s Day. Interestingly, Anna Marie Jarvis, herself, never had any children of her own; neither did she ever marry. In 1948, she died at age 84, still broken-hearted at what she Mother’s Day Cont. on Page 3

The Sensitive Man
A woman meets a man in a bar. They talk; they connect; they end up leaving together.. They get back to his place, And as he shows her around his apartment she notices that one wall of his bedroom is completely filled with soft, sweet, cuddly teddy bears.
There are three shelves in the bedroom, with hundreds and hundreds of cute, cuddly teddy bears carefully placed in rows, covering the entire wall!
It was obvious that he had taken quite some time to lovingly arrange them and she was immediately touched by the amount of thought he had put into organizing the display. There were small bears all along the bottom shelf, medium-sized bears covering the length of the middle shelf, and huge, enormous bears running all the way along the top shelf.
She found it strange for an obviously masculine guy to have such a large collection of Teddy Bears. She is quite impressed by his Sensitive side but doesn't mention this to him.
They share a bottle of wine and continue talking and, after awhile, she finds herself thinking, 'Oh my God! Maybe, this guy could be the one! Maybe he

MOTHER’S DAY AROUND THE WORLD. Today, Mother’s Day is celebrated as an official holiday around the world in over 46 different countries. And it continues getting more and more popular every year, here and abroad. Mother’s Day often has different meanings in different cultures. Sometimes it is associated with various events (religious, historical or legendary) and therefore celebrated on different dates. A TIMELESS REPLY AND A UNIVERSAL TRUTH. A little girl was once asked where her home was. And she answered: “Where my mommy is.”
No philosopher, no poet, nor insightful sage in all of history – put together -- could improve on that little girl’s simple answer. Her answer, which springs from purity and innocence, comes directly from the recesses of the human heart. The great British novelist and author, William Makepeace

A MOTHER’S LOVE. There exists a thousand-year-old Chinese proverb that captures the essence of motherhood: “There is only one pretty child in the world, and every mother has it.” Remarkably, all mothers, everywhere, instinctively have that thousand-year-old Chinese adage imprinted in their DNA. Oddly enough, we are perfect in mom’s eyes, which clearly defies all known human logic and reasoning. All of which gives renewed life to the ancient saying: “Love uses neither reason nor logic -- love just knows.” For many, there is no mortal love under the vault of Heaven, that exceeds the power of love which a mother has for her children. A mother’s unconditional love, wisdom, and guidance all prepares us for life’s journey. You see, life doesn’t come with a manual – it comes with a mom.

And despite all the trials and bitter tests we make them go through when growing up, moms still love us, come rain or shine. We kids can be ruthless; challenging; rebellious; and a perpetual headache for mom – even breaking her heart at times – and yet, she sees us simply as an “unfinished masterpiece” that just needs nurturing. MOTHERS ARE LIFE’S EQUALIZER. Mothers keep us grounded in reality. They keep us anchored to basic truths, and in the realization of who we truly are, without the pretense, egotism, conceit, and mask of arrogance which often creeps into our character.

As the great scientist, Dr. Chu, recalls in his own words: “I called my mother up when they announced the Nobel Prize! She said, ‘That’s nice – now when are you coming to see me next?”
Moms remind us of the simple virtues in life, such as remaining humble, and being thankful for treasures unseen, such as in the daily blessings we take for granted, such as the gathering of loved ones around the dinner table. Moms often lead us out of the darkness and back into the bright sunlight of truth, lost innocence, and redemption.
Their message in life often seems biblical in its enormity of wisdom, but with words that seem poverty-struck, simple and pure, without pretense: “The most important thing in life is just to love, and be loved in return.” THE MYSTERIOUS WORLD OF MOTHERHOOD. Evelyn already had breakfast so just ordered a cinnamon roll, which was made famous by Annette Champion, former owner of Champions.
The staff is friendly, but not at all well trained nor as attentive as they should be.
We waited too long to be served. When I finally received my eggs they were, you guessed it, with runny yolks Evelyn suggested I send them back to the kitchen to be cooked a bit longer. I declined as (a) we had already waited too long for the food and (b) we had an appointment at 11am and it was now 10:40. I do not like to rush my meals. I was forced to at this breakfast.
Evelyn did not receive her cinnamon bun roll until after my eggs arrived and only then after two people asked her what she had ordered. In additiion to my runny eggs the “New Jersey Pork Roll,” (cut on the thick side), bore a remarkable resemblance (and taste) to fried Spam
Letters to the Editor One of Pete’s Many Fans
Thank you Pete Peterson for your excellent article on Edison and Tesla. I really enjoyed your indepth work on both gentlemen. I found the backyard and medical issues suffered by Tesla to be most interesting. He was forced to overcome great obstacles in his life both personal and professionally. Thank you again, keep up the good work!
By the way I pick up The Paper at the Farmer Brothers restaurant. I always find it a good read. I also forward to the “Daily Chuckle” The B17 Flying Fortress Robert Osborne, the so called “expert” who directs the remodeling and revised menu, has no idea of Escondido and its food patrons. He has priced the menu about two dollars too high, per item. The menu is difficult to read; the chairs are uncomfortable, the “remodeling” was a disappointment to me. I was not impressed.
I didn’t see a lot of change. Some new paint, some wainscotting on the lower walls, new flooring, a new counter and some new chandeliers. Collectively, they were not all that impressive of a “makeover.” The food is adequate to good but overpriced and too slowly served. Wait staff did not check on Evelyn’s cinnamon roll or if there was anything we needed or if we had any questions. Generally inattentive. Very nice people but in dire need of training as to how to serve and treat patrons.
Robert Osborne, the tv host and restaurant “expert” is not one of my favorites. He gives me the impression of being an arrogant ‘know-itall’ when, clearly, he does not know diddly about Escondido and its restaurant consumers. $16 for a sandwich? $10 for eggs, New Jersey Ham and toast? We know restaurants, the good ones and the bad ones. The good restaurants, which we tend to review here regularly, offer

(a) excellent service, (b) reasonable rates per plate, (c) easy to read menus, (d) well-prepared food, and (e) overall, excellent value for the price. The bad ones tend to be (a) overpriced, (b) offer slow or poor service, (c) have confusing menus, (d) do not deliver value for the amount charged. This is probably not the review Kaitlyn Rose had hoped for.
But it is an honest and accurate one.
I wish Ms. Rose well. But she needs to immediately see to the training of her wait staff. And she needs to re-evaluate her menu and its prices. Some advice from a well-meaning friend of the food industry who is hoping she re-evaluates and changes to meet the needs of the market. I want her to succeed. I really do She’s a nice, hard-working and dedicated lady.
If she can only see to the proper training of her staff, simplifying the menu, and lowering her prices, she just might make it. If she does not, then I predict she’ll be gone within a year, Perhaps sooner. None of us want that.

yet his mom continues to amaze and baffle him, long after her death. Trillin, despite all his years of living, has still only managed to partly glimpse into that strange, uncharted world of motherhood. The great humorist often makes us laugh out loud with his observations on motherhood. We laugh, yet marvel, at the same time: “The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for 30 years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.”
At other times, real truth about motherhood can be bittersweet, and tugs at the heartstrings, as author/poet, Tenneva Jordan, shares with you: “A mother is a person who, seeing there are only 4 pieces of pie for 5 people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.” MOTHER’S DAY LEGACY OF LAUGHTER & JOY. No Mother’s Day storyline should be without a mother’s humor. A mother’s magical ability to make us laugh during our saddest days is the best medicine in all the world, because it remains true that you cannot laugh and be sad at the same time. The late comedian, Phyllis Diller, the mother of 5 children, once quipped: “I want my children to have all the things I couldn’t afford. Then I want to move in with them!”
Jimmy Fallon, host of “The Tonight Show” on NBC remembers his mom’s unique sense of humor when he was still single and alone: “My mom said ‘If you feel lonely, dim the lights and put on a horror movie. You won’t feel like you’re alone anymore.’” Moms are unmatched comedians in real life and know exactly when and how to make us smile through our saddest moments in childhood, nurturing us through our growing pains. Editor’s Note: One of Country Music’s most well known artists was a stutterer. Mel Tellis. He could sing songs all night long and not stutter - but in his normal speech the stutter would still occasionally show up. Over the years, he managed to control it quite well, when talking. But when he sang, you’d never know he stuttered. He’s gone now, but his music lives on. Kudos for the K-9 Story

don’t have a friend in the whole wide world, or that you just hate yourself and slam your bedroom door in an expression of ultimate frustration, your mom knows just when to talk, and just how to say the right words to make us laugh. Sitting next to you on your bed, wiping your tears away and snuggling up close, she whispers out of the blue: “You know, I once thought your older sister was taking voodoo lessons. Ended up that she was taking up Zumba dance.”
Such real-life scenarios are priceless and tell of a mother’s power of love and innate ability to nurture and care for her offspring. Maternal love cannot be taught; it is inborn; organic and natural. A mother’s love is simply, homegrown, and spun from instinct, without the benefit of any college degree or certificate.
There is a true story of a mother and daughter discussing a history homework assignment. The topic was the Middle Ages (5th to 15th centuries). Dear Lyle,
Thank you for the Elite K-9 Units story by Friedrich Gomez. The proud reputation that K-9 Units have earned in San Diego County and Escondido in particular, in turn made me proud to be an Escondido resident. I enjoy how Friedrich explains the various ways the K-9 officers are used to deescalate an incident, and when unintended consequences such as an innocent party being bitten during a pursuit occurs, a process is in place to reevaluate protocols and procedures to implement improvements. Perhaps Jack The Ripper would not even be a historical figure if today's K-9 Units were in use in that past. /s/ Miguel Romero Escondido, CA

Her mother smiled and replied with humor: “No one survived the medieval times – they’re all dead!” Both mother and daughter collapsed in helpless laughter. It was a classic moment of comic relief. And mothers know just when to use it.

She turns to him and kisses him lightly on the lips He responds warmly. They continue to kiss, the passion builds, and he romantically lifts her in his arms and carries her into his bedroom where they rip off each others clothes and make hot, steamy love. She is so overwhelmed that she responds with more passion, more creativity, more heat than she has ever known.
After an intense, explosive night of raw passion with this sensitive guy, they are lying there together in the afterglow. The woman rolls over, gently strokes his chest and asks coyly, 'Well, how was it?'
The guy gently smiles at her, strokes her cheek, looks deeply into her eyes, and says: 'Help yourself to any prize from the middle shelf.' Letters to the Editor? We love ‘em! Our Readers do as well! Send them to: thepaper@coxnet

tains them through their most challenging moments. For example, mothers seem to instinctively learn funny, but universal truths, in raising their children, such as the following survival rules as seen – only through the eyes -- of every mom: 1. You probably do not want to know what that odor is. 2. Marbles in the car’s gas tank make lots of noise when driving. 3. You don’t throw baseballs up when the ceiling fan is on. 4. VCRs do not eject peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. 5. The spin cycle on the washing machine makes the cat dizzy. 6. The “2-Minute Warning”: This is when the baby’s face turns red eating baby food, followed by gurgling noises. This is also known as “Feedback.”
PRINCIPLES OF CHILDBIRTH. 1ST BABY: You practice your Lamaze breathing exercises religiously in preparation for labor. 2ND BABY: You don’t bother practicing because you remember that last time breathing didn’t do a damned thing. 3RD BABY: You ask for an epidural in your 7th month.
EVOLVING INTO MOTHERHOOD: All moms are aware that there are certain levels of evolution in reaching motherhood. Basically, what this means is that: 1. In time, mom’s maternity clothes eventually become her regular clothes. And also, that husbands live 10 to 20 years longer if they don’t notice or say anything about this. This is a type of “Survival Skill” dads must learn. 2. Also, you know when you have evolved into motherhood when your bare feet sticks to the kitchen floor and you don’t care anymore. 3. Mothers often acquire and proudly display a popular Mother’s Day plaque with the following inscription upon it: “Don’t forget to pick up a bottle of wine for Mother’s Day. After all, you’re one of the reasons I drink.” ALL MOTHERS ARE INGENIOUS PROBLEMSOLVERS. Unlike dads, moms are more clever and quick problem-solvers. For example, all moms quickly learn the following:
1. Technique For Getting a Sleepy Child Out of Bed: You throw the cat on the bed. This always works because the dog is already on the bed. 2. Quickest Way for a Mother to Get Her Children’s Attention: You sit down and look relaxed and comfortable. All of a sudden, your kids will stop whatever they are doing and come and bother you. This works all the time.
MOTHERLY ADVICE ALWAYS THE BEST. Mothers are smart enough to know that kids learn better by example, rather than trying to explain things with words. When dad tries to explain things, the kids quickly lose interest and begin looking around and not paying attention. Moms, on the other hand, are the best teachers. Take the following true example, as a real mom explains her technique: “My kids wanted to know what it’s like to be a mom. So, I woke them up at 2 a.m. to tell them my sock came off.” MOTHERS ARE BEST TEACHERS ON ALL SUBJECTS. On a variety of subjects, moms seem to know best. For example, regardless of any spiritual beliefs, it is a universal trait with all mothers of the world to teach religion in one form or another, such as when they tell you: “You better pray that will come out of the carpet!” All mothers are also meteorologists with great training in weather forecasting and weather analysis. This is usually evident when moms tell us: “It looks like a tornado swept through your room!”
Also in teaching us how to set priorities in our lives, they tell us: “If you two kids are going to kills each other, do it outside!! I just finished cleaning the house!!” Moms also teach us logic at the dinner table: “Shut your mouth and eat your food!!” They even teach us how to become contortionists: “Will you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!!”
MOMS KNOW HOW TO KEEP THEIR SANITY. Unlike dad, who often blows a Mother’s Day Cont. on Page 8
Let’s Honor – and Help – our Veterans
May is National Military Appreciation Month, and includes several national observances honoring our veterans and their families. These include Victory in Europe (VE) Day on May 8th, Military Spouse Appreciation Day on May 10th, Armed Forces Day on May 18th and Memorial Day on May 27th.
But supporting our veterans involves more than holidays or national commemorations. This session I have joined with Assemblyman William Brough (R – Dana Point) to co-author Assembly Bill 427. The bill would exclude military retirement pay from the state’s income tax.
20 states do not tax military benefits at all and 13 only tax a portion. States excluding military retirement pay from the income tax include Alabama, Hawaii, Illinois, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In fact, California is one of only 8 states that fully taxes military retirement pay! California is home to 1.8 million veterans, 8% of all veterans living in the United States. Since many

Sometimes it’s nice to spend a pleasant “happy hour” with your favorite drink and someone special and we know just the place to wind down after an eventful day, but not every eventful day is a “happy hour” kind of day.
We all have those days when everything seems to go wrong and by the end of the day you’re toast. You feel like you need a stiff drink to drown your sorrows. Wrong. This is not a “happy hour” day. This is a day to stay home and go to bed early. The ideal ‘happy hour” day is a good day when you took care of business, got things done and feel pretty good about yourself. Now you need a place where you can celebrate your triumphs and still get home in time to watch JEOPARDY. In the warm glow of late afternoon, the patio at 1020 Prime in Restaurant Row is the perfect place. Their happy hour is exclusive to the bar and patio area and runs from 4:00 to 7:00PM every day. The happy hour price is $4 and take your pick, Margaritas, Long Island ice tea, well drinks, wine and
service members are able to retire after 20 years, they have decades of their working lives ahead of them. Veterans who were stationed at places like Camp Pendleton often fall in love with our state and would prefer to live here after retirement. We should do all we can to help them do just that by joining other states that don’t tax military retirement pay.
Our veterans have never failed us, and we shouldn’t fail them. The men and women who have worn the uniform, often at great risk and sacrifice, have protected and defended all of us. Eliminating the state income tax on the benefits they have earned is something we should be proud to do for them. Making California more affordable for our veterans will benefit everyone. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

The “happy hour” menu runs the full gamut from snacks to full dinners. Menu items like wings, shrimp, dips, salads, tacos and, sandwiches are perfect for a light dinner and many in the 5-6 dollar range. If it gets a little chilly as the sun goes down they’ll light up a heater over your table. The food is great the wait staff is “old school” friendly. You just might want to “throw your hat in the creek” because you’ve found a new home.

Sponsored by CEF’s Student Leadership Council, the program is led by 40 high school students from Sage Creek and Carlsbad High Schools to provide a platform for local leaders to share important life, career and leadership lessons. This student-led program brings together inventors, innovators and entrepreneurs to share life lessons in leadership. “We are thrilled to host this year’s leadership forum, which is energized by the passion and purpose shared by our young leaders,” said Michelle Ginn, CEO of Carlsbad Educational Foundation. “The students are working hard to prepare an engaging evening that celebrates learning and leadership, which will appeal to students of all ages.” The CEF, a non-profit 501(c) (3), was founded to raise private support for public education and contribute to the enrichment of nearly 11,000 students in the Carlsbad Unified School District, primarily for science, technology, and music programs.
Founded in 2016, CEF’s Student Leadership Council empowers students to unlock their leadership potential through alignment with four key pillars: local community-based non-profits, corporate community involvement, leadership development, and student ambassadorship. SLC members gain hands-on leadership skills and practical, real-world experience through monthly meetings, leadership curriculum, special speakers, student advocacy and volunteerism. During the forum, students will share highlights of their own personal leadership journeys while applying what they’ve learned to interactive discussions with special guests.

plied meat and hides to the Gold Rush miners in Northern California. In 1853, Couts was appointed subagent for San Luis Rey Mission Indians. Historical records indicate he took advantage of the natives and used their enslaved labor to improve his properties.
In 1854, Couts became County Judge, and in 1859, was appointed a member of the County’s first Grand Jury, He became a leading political figure in San Diego County.
A Tennessee native was one of the first “Anglo” settlers to claim one of the largest Mexican land grants in the north part of San Diego County. Cave Johnson Couts’ Rancho Guajome lies in what today is the city of Vista along N. Santa Fe Ave., near the Oceanside city limits.
Over the years, Rancho Gujajome was a stagecoach stop. Ysidora entertained noted author Helen Hunt Jackson while the writer was collecting materials for her bestselling book, “Ramona.” Part of Hunt’s story is said to have taken place at the Guajome Rancho – especially some of the ill treatment of the Native Americans living and working on the ranch. When Ysidora found out what Hunt was writing, she had the author locked up and kept prisoner for some time. As Couts’ wealth grew, consisting largely of cattle, the passage of the fencing law eliminated “open range” grazing, which was a severe financial blow to Couts, and one from which he never fully recovered.
In 1849, Lieutenant Couts, who was a qualified surveyor, conducted the Whipple expedition to the Colorado River. He documented and mapped California’s and Arizona’s southern boundaries with Mexico as outlined in the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty settlement ending the Mexican War with the U.S.
Couts died at the young age of 53 years and is buried in the Old Town cemetery in San Diego. A number of the Couts family relatives still live in the San Diego area.
In 1848, as a result of the Guadalupe Hidalgo Treaty, Mexico ceded large portions of what would become “Alta” (upper) California and Arizona. It opened the way for American settlers to rush in and claim large portions of what today is Los Angeles and San Diego Counties.
Couts graduated from the Military Academy at West Point in 1843. He served on Western frontier assignments as a dragoon officer until the end of the Mexican War in 1848. He was posted to the Mission San Luis Rey, the largest of the 21 coastal Spanish missions, which is located today in the city of Oceanside. Later, he was posted 30 miles south to Old Town San Diego.
Lieutenant Couts was said to have ridden at the head of a troop of dragoons being posted in San Diego. As Couts entered the town, he caught the eye of Ysidora Bandini, daughter of a prominent Old Town businessman. They were married in 1851. That year, Couts resigned his commission from the U.S. Army and was appointed a colonel on the staff of California Gov. John Bigler. In 1853, the couple moved to North San Diego County, settling on a tract of land known as the Guajome (pronounced: wah-home-ah), a 2,288-acre Mexican land grant. Ysidora received it as a wedding gift from her brother-in-law, wealthy Los Angeles businessman Abel Stearns. Much of the land had once been claimed by the padres of the Mission San Luis Rey until Mexico took possession in 1821.
Couts built a large, rambling, 20room, Spanish Colonial-style hacienda. It was built with profits from a cattle boom of the 1850s, when many California ranchos sup-
Couts was a controversial and colorful figure. People who knew him either respected and liked him, or outright hated him for his dealings and sometimes cruel methods and treatment, primarily to Native Americans. On one occasion, he reportedly got in a gunfight in Old Town with a former ranch hand, who claimed he was owed unpaid wages. As the story goes, Couts shot the man in the back, but was found “not guilty” by a jury, citing “self-defense.” The verdict, no doubt, was the result of Couts being influential in early San Diego County.
Today, what’s left of the original Rancho Gujajome hacienda and associated structures is a National Historic Landmark. It also is a California Historical Landmark and on the National Register of Historic Places, serving as a County park and museum. In the museum the surveyor’s transit Couts used to map the southern U.S. border is occasionally on display, loaned by a descendant of Couts.

head gasket when the kids drive him bananas, moms know their limits beforehand and, therefore, take precautionary steps BEFORE they lose their sanity. Moms will say coded words in a calm voice to dad, and dad instantly understands that she is ready to have a meltdown. Moms will smile gently at dad and with a tired expression on her face say these words in a very weak voice: “I want you to drive 7 hours east with the kids in the car and then turn around and come back.” Dads always seem to understand the drill. Dad also knows when mom needs some time off when she says certain things, like: “You know when your life has changed when going to the grocery store, alone, is a vacation!”
It’s far from easy being a mom. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld once said: “A 2-year-old is kind of like having a blender – but you don’t have a top for it!”
MOMS HAVE THEIR OWN LANGUAGE & RULES. All moms even have a different
vocabulary and language which they create through Charles Darwin’s Law of Adaptation & Survival of the Fittest. For example, a “dumbwaiter” is someone who asks if the children would care to order a dessert at a restaurant.
Listed below are things moms never, ever say or admit out loud to their kids. Moms are usually taught this by a POW survivor, and learn never to say: 1. “Here, let me smell that shirt again – oh yeah, it’s good for another week.” 2. “Oh yeah, I used to skip
school a lot too.” 3. “Yeah, sure. You can leave all the lights on . . . it makes the house look so much more cheery!” 4. “Oh, you’re wearing your Superman pajamas and flying cape to bed? Sure, you can have the top bunk bed.” 5. “Is that the cat you’re carrying? Yes, daddy’s shaving cream and razor is in the bathroom.” MOMS ARE PROPHETS WHO CAN PREDICT THE

FUTURE. Moms know when something is going to happen before it actually does. For example, moms know that when their kids are too quiet in their rooms – they’re up to something no good. Moms have this mantra which they learn from a certified mental institution: “Silence is golden . . . unless you have kids, then it’s just suspicious.” As prophets and predictors of doom, moms make the best law-makers, judges, jury, and curfew police – all rolled up in one person. Don’t ever try to fool mom because she knows before you even think it.
A MOTHER’S WISDOM & PHILOSOPHY. My mom always taught me things that sometimes made me question the world around me. For example, a psychiatrist on television once said that the notion of “Love at first sight” was just an illusion; a fanciful notion found only in unrealistic soap operas and syrupy love songs. Yet, when my mom hugged me tightly, she would often say to me: “When you were born,
and the nurse first placed you into my arms, believe me, it was love at first sight.”
I believe my mom, over the university-trained psychiatrist and other experts. My mom has passed away. Yet, she never ceases to amaze me. She just seemed to know everything. She was the smartest person I ever knew. Even to this day, her wisdom has helped guide me through the darkness, and the pain, and the fear which comes with being left alone, without her, to hold my little hand, or pick me up and squeeze me and make me laugh with her, as she once did. It’s hard for me to understand that I will never, again, be allowed to hug and tell my mom how much I love her – ever again. She was truly my best friend, as well as being my mom. All I have now are memories.
When I was a small child I would always tell her: “Mommy, you are the smartest person in the universe.” And she would answer me, “Honey, you’re gonna grow up someday, and things will change and you won’t

always think of me this way. You’ll have your own life, and you won’t need me anymore.”
I remember staring long and silent at what my mom had just told me. I answered her as best as I could: “But, Mama, I will always need you in my life.” Then, I would hug her.
What troubles me is that mom always taught me the wisest things in life and, yet, I found a serious flaw in her reasoning. Sometimes, when I’m walking by myself on a sunny day, I’ll remember things my mom said. And sometimes, I’ll smile and look upward at the endless sky and whisper: “Mom, you were wrong. I still miss you. And I still need you in my life.” Recently, at Cruisin’ Grand, here in Escondido, I ventured into a corner gift shop and in the rear of the store I saw a plaque sitting on the floor. It had various quotes of mothers to their children. I saw one sentence that seemed to leap out at me. It said something I needed to hear. It read:
“May you always know how deeply you are loved, how your life shines brightly. And how your heart is never alone. May our spirits be connected always.” It was as if my mom was in the store that day. As if she were talking to me. Once, again.
If you can hear me Mom, happy Mother’s Day. I will always love you. I miss you so much.

Pastor Hal Seed, New Song Community Church, Oceanside Science and the Bible are Coming Closer Together
Children love to hear their parents tell stories about “when you were born,” and “when you were little.” How we got here and where we came from is important to us.
God knew this. In the book of Genesis, He describes our species’ beginnings, and the early stories of what formed and shaped human society. In some ways, the book of Genesis is our family photo album. God filled it with pictures that fulfill our longing to know about the highlights of our beginnings. The exciting news is that science and the Bible are coming closer together these days. Scientists once believed the universe was eternal. The Bible teaches that it had a beginning. Science has now adopt-
During the month of May, I’ll be exploring the confluence of science and the Bible, using Genesis 1 and 2 as our text. I invite you to join us.
Genesis 1 contains the beautiful record of how the universe began. It’s a masterpiece of literature and of recorded history. From a literary standpoint, the Creation story is told with symmetry, style and grace. Genesis 1:1 supplies the introduction: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” The four fundamental determinations of physics are time, space, matter, and causality. They’re all present here. “In the beginning [time] God created [causality] the heavens [space] and the earth [matter].” Every word of Genesis is filled with meaning and significance. If you’ve never studied the Bible, it’s a great place to start!
New Song is located at 3985 Mission Ave. in Oceanside. Services times are 9 & 11 a.m. I hope to see you soon.

The City is one of the fastest growing cities in San Diego County, median incomes are on an uptick that’s outpacing the region, and the local business inventory has grown 10 percent in the last decade alone.
As the City continues to thrive, a couple of key projects have generated a good deal of public interest: North City, which aims to anchor the City’s future downtown; and San Elijo Town Center, which is at the heart of that community. Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido! !
I’ll start with a positive and that is, I had the opportunity to meet many but not all of the volunteers who help the city. It was an impressive crowd, and I want to thank all of them again for helping build community in our city.
Aside from transportation (last week’s theme,) another huge challenge we have is housing. There is just no simple and fair answer. I’m like everyone, I would like to keep our city’s character as much as possible but at the same time, people need a place to live. How does one find that balance? The problem is exacerbated when you learn from the developers their challenge, in putting together a successful formula when you include variables like land, regulations, labor costs etc. where they are able to at least not lose money, and have a unit someone can afford. I often hear simple solutions to complex problems. Unfortunately, those solutions won’t work. We have some tough choices ahead. I would encourage you to keep an open mind and listen to both sides. Thank you. Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamara, Mayor of Escondido

New cars and computers-
What is it that makes you decide to get a new car? Is it a status symbol, is it the “new car smell.” Maybe it’s the safety features like automatic braking or perhaps the fact that you stink at parallel parking and the new car will do it for you. Some folks lease their rides and simply change cars when the lease expires. Probably the most practical and common reason to buy a new car is when you suspect that keeping your old car up and running is becoming an expensive proposition, then it’s time to buy a new car. You dazzle your friends with all
the gadgetry in your new car. It has almost as many apps as your “smart phone.” Then one Friday afternoon you’re driving home on 78 when a 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz passes you at 85 MPH followed by a string of 1960s Mustangs, Corvettes and Trans-Ams, all on their way to Cruisin Grand in Escondido. It makes you stop and think how far have we really advanced in automotive technology in the past 60 years? Sure you get better gas mileage than those dinosaurs but has technology really made that much difference in how you get from here to there? Maybe not as much difference as the car industry would like you to believe but let’s face it, cars have thousands of moving parts that eventually wear out and must be replaced. The owners of vintage cars have spent many times the original price of their cars to maintain them in roadworthy condition for the pleasure of owning driving and showing off their classics. Buying a new or late model used car makes sense because eventually keeping your old one will cost more than it’s worth. Like cars, PCs are a practical necessity for living in the 21st century. With the notable exception of the Apple Fanbois, few consider their PC to be a status symbol. For Windows users PCs are a simply a tool. In the past
decade auto engineers have made significant improvements, perhaps not in speed and power, but in safety, economy and environmental impact. By contrast, the past decade has seen increases in the speed and power of PCs but only for special high end applications. The speed requirements for PCs used in small business and homes have been stable over the past decade. As a consequence, the new PCs sold to small business and home users today are typically no faster or more efficient in the performance of Internet and text based applications.. PCs have few moving parts to wear out and those that do are cheap and easily replaced. So if new PCs don’t do anything better than older PCs and wear is not a factor, why would anyone buy a new PC? As long as your
PC was made in the last decade you shouldn’t. If you need to replace or add a PC, the smart decision would be to buy a used or “refurb” desktop or laptop. A commercial “refurb” is significantly higher in quality than a “retail” PC and about half the price.
The Jukebox By Jeff Figler
1972 classic disco ere Seeburg jukebox went for $1625 in a 2014 Heritage auction. A 1957 Seeburg sold for $13,000.
Have you ever gone to a 50s diner, seen someone standing next to a record machine and drop a coin into the machine? All of a sudden there is a record such as Rock Around the Clock, or The Lion Sleeps Tonight, or To Know Him Is to Love Him blaring in the background. Any song by Elvis or Dion and the Belmonts would be fine, too. These machines, called jukeboxes, are not very common these days, but were extremely popular even 50 years ago.
These coin-operated music boxes actually got their start in the 1890s. Louis Glass and William Arnold invented the nickel-in-theslot phonograph in 1890. In 1928, Justus Seeburg combined an electrostatic loudspeaker with a record player that was coin operated, and gave the listener a choice of eight records. In 1940 the term jukebox came into use in the United States. In 1950, the Seeburg Corporation introduced an all 45 rpm vinyl record jukebox, enabling the 45 rpm record to be the primary jukebox media in the second half of the 20th century. Contact lyle e davis @ 760.747.7119
Of course, jukeboxes are popular among collectors. Jukeboxes can be very ornate, which will definitely effect the price. A
So if refurbs are every bit as good as new PCs for most applications, why do schools corporations and governments recycle them every three to five years? That’s a really good question and one we hope they don’t figure it out right away. In the meantime “refurbs” will remain one of the great bargains in America today. Come and get em, we have plenty... Next week; “Why you need to swap out your HDD for an SSD”
At auction, the Wurlitzers and the Rock-Olas have done very well. One of the historic Wurlitzer “Bubbler” jukebox from 1948 was sold for $17,500. An extremely rare Rock-Ola Commando Model 1420 jukebox was auctioned for $19,000 in 2012.
Anyway, these machines are very well made, and play very good music. They are very colorful, and are certainly an addition to any room or den where you just want to hear fine music.
