Her early marksmanship quickly became legendary, as she was able to ‘take out’ key enemy personnel over, seemingly, impossible distances.

After proving her skills by taking out two enemy Romanian collaborators from a Soviet-defended hill far in the distance, Pavlichenko was quickly enrolled into the Red Army’s 25th Rifle Division as a bona fide sniper.

She became one of the 2,484 Soviet female snipers to serve with the Allied Forces in World War II, of which only 500 survived the war.

She had an impeccable ‘kill’ rate which covered, ostensibly, impossible distances, with her deadly modified Russian-made 7.62x54mmR rifle, loaded with the same calibre bullets found in machine guns of that era. The bullets she shot had a velocity (speed) of 3,000 feet (per second), or nearly 2,000 mph!

Impossible to detect under camouflage that made her virtually invisible within her surroundings, she was ferociouslyarmed by carrying a combat load of 120 armour-piercing-incendiary (B32) bullets into the combat field.

Known far-and-wide from her ominous sobriquet as “Lady Death,” she caught the attention of Nazi elite personnel, all the way up to the Fuhrer himself, Adolf Hitler, all of whom wanted her to join

Women over 50!

In case you missed it on 60 Minutes, this is what the late Andy Rooney thought about women over 50.

60 Minutes Correspondent Andy Rooney (CBS)

"As I grow in age, I value women over 50 most of all. Here are just a few reasons why: A woman over 50 will never wake you in the middle of the night & ask, 'What are you thinking?' She doesn't care what you think.

If a woman over 50 doesn't want to watch the game, she doesn't sit around whining about it. She goes and does something she wants to do, & it's usually more interesting.

their side.

With the official approval from Adolf Hitler, the German Army attempted to bribe her, sending messages over radio loudspeakers stating: “Lyudmila Pavlichenko, come over to us. We will give you plenty of chocolates and make you a German officer.”

She ignored their offers.

Her ‘kill’ rate continued to reach new heights, even when facing-off against expert (male) snipers who were all sent to stop her.

For about two and a half months, Pavlichenko fought on the frontline during the Siege of Odessa, which was invaded by the Axis powers. While at Odessa, she recorded 187 ‘important high-ranking officer’ kills, and received a promotion to Senior Sergeant.

Later, Pavlichenko and her unit withdrew to Sevastopol to defend the city.

There, Pavlichenko fought in the siege of Sevastopol for eight months, where intense fighting resulted in heavy Soviet casualties. It was in Sevastopol, that her kill count rose even higher.

By May of 1942, Lady Death recorded almost 260 critically-important sniper ‘kills’ of key enemy ground personnel, which garnered her another promotion, this time to Lieutenant Pavlichenko.

The higher the number of Pavlichenko’s confirmed kills rose, the more dangerous her mission assignments became. This included countersniping, or engaging in duels with other expert male enemy snipers.

Pavlichenko won every duel she fought, including one duel that lasted three days against the finest, most decorated male snipers that the enemy gathered against her.

In the end, Pavlichenko stated that the enemy made “one move too many,” and they became further ‘notches’ – as she added 36 enemy snipers that she took down.

She was the stuff of legend and lore -all this, while she was still a young girl in her 20s.

Near the end of her time on the front line, the German bribes finally became threats.

an expensive restaurant . Of course, if you deserve it, they won't hesitate to shoot you if they think they can get away with it.

Older women are generous with praise, often undeserved. They know what it's like to be unappreciated.

Women get psychic as they age. You never have to confess your sins to a woman over 50.

Once you get past a wrinkle or two, a woman over 50 is far sexier than her younger counterpart.

Older women are forthright and honest.. They'll tell you right off if you are a jerk or if you are acting like one. You don't ever have to wonder where you stand with her.

Yes, we praise women over 50 for a multitude of reasons. Unfortunately, it's not reciprocal. For every stunning, smart, well-coiffed, hot woman over 50, there is a bald, paunchy relic in yellow pants making a fool of himself with some 22-year old waitress.

Ladies, I apologize.

For all those men who say, 'Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?'

Here's an update for you. Nowadays 80% of women are against marriage. Why? Because women realize it's not worth buying an entire pig just to get a little sausage.

One German message stated: “If we catch you, we will tear you into 309 pieces and scatter them to the winds!”

Hearing this threat, Pavlichenko said she was only too happy to hear that even the enemy accurately knew of her most ferocious sniper-killing record.

Upon her return to the Soviet Union, Pavlichenko was promoted to Major and given the title “Hero of the Soviet Union,” the country’s highest military distinction. She also received the Order of Lenin twice, the country’s highest civilian designation.

The Soviet Union removed her from battle as they deemed her too valuable to risk losing. At the age of 25, she had already been wounded in battle four times.

When she made tours in Europe, Canada, and the United States to garner support for the war effort, thousands of Americans gathered to see a living legend in a woman’s uniform at such a young age – she was barely 26years-old!

Pavlichenko never returned to combat, but instead trained other Soviet snipers until the war’s end in 1945. She went on to complete her studies at Kiev University in present-day Ukraine (her birthplace) and became a historian.

Unfortunately, as with many soldiers, Pavlichenko suffered from many years of clinical Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression.

On 10 October 1974, Lyudmila Pavlichenko passed away after suffering from a stroke at the age of only 54.

Two commemorative Soviet postage stamps were printed in her honour, one in 1943 following her battle career, and the second in 1976 following her death.

In her time, she boldly and openly criticised the Soviet Union and spoke of racial segregation within the Red Army and lack of gender equality –today, she most certainly would have demonized and vilified present-day Vladimir Putin for his vulgar, murder-

A NEW 2022 LEGENDARY UKRAINIAN FEMALE SNIPER FIGHTS PUTIN’S ARMY TODAY. Today, in 2022, a modern Ukrainian sniper known as “Charcoal” is being hailed as a national female warrior hero after joining the front line to fight Putin’s invading Russian army.

And she has caused havoc and global embarrassment to Putin, as she has, ostensibly, killed off several of Putin’s most elite, top military generals who were sent to Ukraine to bolster sagging morale among Russian ground forces.

And to add insult to injury, “Charcoal” has also been given the Ukrainian nickname of “Lady Death,” a title once bestowed upon her WWII predecessor, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, pet walks on warm days — changes in their behavior can indicate discomfort.

Revolution, recently had a field trip to the Mission San Luis Rey in Oceanside.

Members and guests gathered in a shaded area in front of the Mission while Helena Hazleton, Museum Director, gave a bit of history about the Mission - its beginning in 1798 by the Franciscan Friars; ensuing turbulent years after abandonment; and its restoration after President Lincoln returned it to the church in 1865.

After visiting the inner courtyard, the group headed to the chapel and the cemetery for another bit of history. The Lavenderia was the next stop where the group took time to take a picture with the chapter’s historic marker dedicated in March 2000.

They then split in two with Hazleton as docent for one and Gwyn Grimes, Executive Director, as docent of the other. The Lavenderia is gradually being restored as funding becomes available. The Daughters ended their field trip with lunch at a local eatery.

Celebrate National Trails Day

with a Group Hike, June 4 The City of Carlsbad will celebrate National Trails Day with a group hike on Saturday, June 4, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Hosp Grove. Two trail hikes of varying distances will take place, and along the way local habitat and wildlife will be discussed.

National Trails Day is the country’s largest celebration of trails. It began in the late 1980s and is organized by the American Hiking Society.

The event location, Hosp Grove trails are in one of the oldest areas of Carlsbad and possess an intriguing historical significance. They were the first city trails built and maintained by volunteers. The scenic unpaved trails wind through the grove and up and down steep slopes for approximately three miles. On the west side of the grove, the trails offer a ‘buena vista’ meaning ‘good view’ of the adjacent Buena Vista Lagoon.

the original “Lady Death” who was also born just south of present-day Kiev, the capital of modern-day Ukraine.

According to both Russian and Ukrainian sources, Russian Major General Andre Sukhovetsky was the first high-ranking loss for the Russian military after being killed by sniper fire.

Some leaked sources say it was the deadly sniper “Charcoal,” whose identity and personage is greatly guarded by Ukrainian forces.

The killing of a top Russian general in Ukraine enraged and humiliated President Putin on a global stage numbering in the billions of people.

Ukrainian Intelligence won’t release clear photos of their legendary female sniper (whose face is always partially covered). She is simply known as “Ugoliok,” which is Ukrainian for “Charcoal.”

Her accurate and deadly sniper successes (unspecified) have made her an important rallying call for Ukrainian troops for her, allegedly, ‘taking out’ critical high-ranking Russian military generals.

One officially-released Ukrainian report has Charcoal stating:

“We must take them all out. These people are not human beings. Even the fascists were not as vile as these orcs. We must defeat them all.” -- Charcoal. Other widely-photographed male snipers, such as “Wali” (shown everywhere on videos and photos on the internet in combat fatigues), is an exCanadien veteran who served two stints in Afghanistan, and decided to join Ukrainian forces against Putin’s army – only to return to Quebec, Canada after less than two months, stating his “discouragement in the Ukrainian War.”

According to some Intelligence sources, Charcoal is truly legendary, and able to make accurate kills as far away as 7,500 feet or as much as 1 ½miles – easily.

Leaked Intelligence sources claim the legendary sniper has already ‘taken out’ the following top Russian generals and leaders, causing global humiliation and ferocious anger from Putin.

1. Russian Major General, Andre Sukhovetsky, the first high-ranking loss, confirmed killed by sniper fire.

2. Russian Major General, Vitaly Gerasimov, confirmed shot dead by sniper fire in Kharkiv.

3. Russian Major General, Oleg Mityaev, killed by sniper fire (The New York Times reported that Ukrainian troops “intercepted a call from a Russian general, thereby setting up Oleg Mityaev’s exact location,”) to, allegedly, set him up for Charcoal’s unprecedented accuracy in long-range sniper fire. Mordvichev (Russia’s 8th Army Armed Forces). Killed by sniper fire.

5. Russian Lt. Colonel Denis Mezhuev (Commander of 1st Guards Motor Rifle Sevastopol Red Banner Regiment). Shot dead by long-range sniper fire.

(According to some U. S. Intelligence sources, all of the above Russian generals are suspected sniper ‘kills’ by Charcoal, Ukraine’s modern day “Lady of Death.”)

On 4 May 2022, the New York Times reported the headline: “U. S. Intelligence Is Helping Ukraine Kill Top Russian Generals.” (Ukrainian Armed Forces refused to confirm if their most deadly and indispensable lady sniper, “Charcoal” was involved.)

U. S. Intelligence says approximately 24 high-ranking Russian military commanders have been killed in combat, mostly through Ukrainian military explosives, missiles, drones, tanks, etc.

However, the first several – and who knows how many others – were felled by a young, beautiful Ukrainian woman, simply known as “Ukraine’s Lady of Death.”

(Readers may view a very short video on Charcoal aka “Lady of Death,” released by the Ukrainian Armed Forces who are immensely proud of

Carlsbad Investigators Seek Witnesses of Attempted Murder and Assault with a Vehicle at Local Shopping Center

On May 15, at 2:10 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department received several 911 calls of a vehicle striking multiple pedestrians in the parking lot at 300 Carlsbad Village Drive.

When officers arrived, they learned that a male was involved in a fight with several people in the parking lot. The male then returned to his vehicle and drove his car into a crowd of pedestrians, striking several people. The male then reversed his vehicle into another crowd, striking more pedestrians and fled the scene.

Four pedestrians required medical attention at local area hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives identified 19-year-old John Jason Martinez-Gutierrez from Spokane, Washington as the suspect. An arrest warrant for MartinezGutierrez was issued for one count of attempt murder and six counts of assault with a deadly weapon.

On May 17, with the assistance of the Escondido Police Department, Carlsbad Police detectives arrested Martinez-Gutierrez at a local motel in Escondido. Martinez-Gutierrez was booked at the Vista Detention Facility on the issued arrest warrant; he is currently in custody and is not eligible for bail.

How many pedestrians were hit by Martinez-Gutierrez and the cause of the initial dispute is still under investigation. Detectives are seeking additional witnesses, or anyone with additional information. Please contact Sergeant Jim Willis, 442-339-5679 or james.willis@carlsbadca.gov

Oceanside Approves Downtown Shuttle Service for Tourist Season

Oceanside has approved an electric vehicle shuttle service for visitors and residents downtown for six months starting Memorial Day weekend.

Early this year city staffers contacted Circuit, a company that operates electric vehicle shuttles in San Diego and Huntington Beach about offering a program in Oceanside.

The Oceanside City Council unanimously approved a contract Wednesday with the company to operate a six-month program seven days a week, 12 hours a day, from May 16 to Nov. 15.

“We really need to make this happen for this summer,” said Mayor Esther Sanchez. “The big issue is traffic. It’s trying to reduce traffic and get people into the downtown area and maybe South Oceanside. Eventually, I’d like to see this all year. We have good weather year round and visitors year round.”

The cost of $321,361 will be paid with a share of the city’s COVID-19 relief money from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. Oceanside received $16.2 million in ARPA money in May 2021 and expects a second installment of the same amount this year.

A fleet of five on-demand, shared vehicles will operate west of Interstate 5, between Vista Way on the south and the harbor on the north. Initial operating hours will be 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., though the hours could be adjusted based on demand.

People will schedule rides using a telephone or computer app like the ones used for the ride-sharing services Uber and Lyft.

One detail still to be decided is whether the Oceanside service will be free, like in San Diego, or if it will be operated at a minimal fare of $1 to $3 per passenger, officials said.

Advertising space will be sold on the interior and exterior of the vehicles, and under the contract the city will receive half the net revenue from advertising. The products to be advertised will be restricted from including adult products such as tobacco, alcohol and cannabis.

Man About Town

He made it!

Yes, our own Friedrich Gomez has now published his 200th cover story for The Paper! People who are not writers may not have any idea what a momentous achievement this is. 10-15 cover stories is impressive, 20-25 cover stories a monumental task. But 200 cover stories? Unheard of!

Friedrich himself tells the story of how this all came about in his Letter to the Editor in this week’s issue. It’s quite a remarkable story and one we’re proud of.

Along the way, Friedrich has picked up a legion of fans who love him and his work. One of his great admirers was the late Sylvia Clark. and she had expressed her love of Friedrich’s works so often that her family wanted to run an obituary for Sylvia, but only in the same issue in which Friedrich had his 200th cover story published!

You’ll find her obituary on page 12 of this issue. Interesting to note that the photo that accompanies the obituary was taken just two days before she died. •••• While we celebrate Friedrich’s amazing accomplishment we also celebrate Memorial Day with this issue.

Friedrich referred one of his friends, Mark Roberts, to us. Turns out Mr. Roberts is quite a poet.

He wrote a poem, “This Hallowed Ground.” We read it, and I liked it. As I read Mark’s poem I was reminded of another great poem, “In Flander’s Fields” by John McCrae.

I decided it was a perfect poem to publish in honor of Memorial Day. Youll find Mark’s beautiful poem on page 8. Along with another tribute to Friedrich. •••• I was not too surprised to learn recently that more people are moving out of California than are moving here. of his companies in California, but he’s become increasingly critical of the state as a place to do business.

The Tesla CEO made that much clear in recent comments during a virtual appearance at the recent AllIn Conference held in Miami.

“California used to be the land of opportunity,” Musk told the audience. However it’s turned into “the land of taxes, overregulation and litigation and this is not a good situation.”

Musk became increasingly critical of the state as Tesla ramped up its production facilities. He famously built the first so-called gigafactory in neighboring Nevada, after winning generous tax concessions from that state. He went on to build facilities in Shanghai and near Berlin. But when the time came for a new U.S. factory, Musk opted for Texas.

He boasted that the recently opened Gigafactory near Austin – a building three times the size of the Pentagon – was completed in just 18 months.

“If you had a gun to [California Governor Gavin Newsom’s] head and said ‘we need to start building this factory right now,’ he couldn’t do it,” Musk said. “There are so many regulatory agencies and so many litigators in California that want to stop you from doing anything that even if you’re the governor of the state, you cannot get it done,” he added. Musk laid the

A Very Special “Letter to the Editor”

Lyle, as promised, I have completed my story assignment, which you will find attached, here.

blame for California’s challenges on its political environment.

“It’s a one-party state,” Musk complained, noting that Democrats hold a super-majority in the state legislature and all of the statewide elected offices. The state’s elected officials “will never be responsive except to the people that funded them,” he added.

“Ultimately the people of California have to get fed up and demand change,” Musk added. “There’s got to be an above 0% chance of the Republicans winning in California.”

Of the many companies Musk founded or boosted over the years, most were founded in California, including PayPal SpaceX, the Boring Company, Neuralink and Tesla.

Interesting observations by Mr. Musk and, love him or hate him, it appears to this observer that he is right on target. Indeed, if I were a younger man I would seriously consider leaving California. Love the weather . . . love most of the people, but government is oppressive.

It will be interesting to see what happens during the coming election cycle and what, if anything, changes in California.
