Among Groucho’s renowned oneliners are “Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana,” “While in Africa, one morning I shot an elephant in my pajamas. How he got into my pajamas, I’ll never know,” “Why, I’d horse whip you if I had a horse,” “If you want to see a comic strip, you should see me in the shower” and “Women should be obscene and not heard.”

Puns and malaprops thrive in the same neighborhood, such as the comic pointing out that a colleague’s memory lapse was probably caused by too much Milk of Amnesia. And there’s the press agent who claimed all they had when they began making the epic Biblical movie, “Ben Hur” was “faith, hope and chariots.”
One easy one I remember from youngster days goes like this, “Can February March? No, but April May.” That hauled into mind the old schoolyard throwaway, “My picture wound up in jail, but it was framed.” And the chuckles about the cross-eyed teacher who couldn’t control her pupils.
Included among the list of don’ts in my life is to never talk about infinity because the conversation could go on forever. I also got to thinking a few years ago that it must be confusing to be a young ant because even their uncles are ants.
As we were growing up, my sister applied for a job at the post office but they wouldn’t letter because they said only mails worked there. She got a job at a calendar factory but that didn’t last long because they fired her after she took a day off.
My brother wanted to buy a boat so I told him to look under the For Sail section in the classified ads.
There was the time I ran into my friend and, when I visited him in the hospital, he asked me why I didn’t miss him. He said he was sleeping like a log so I told him he’d have to start looking for a fireplace.
He also had a wife who had a photographic memory. The problem was, she never developed it.
It was after a trip to Australia (honest!) that I got some mileage out of telling people I had trouble remembering how to throw a boomerang but it usually came back to me.
I’ve always thought that becoming a vegetarian would be a big misteak. And there are health nuts trying to ground me because I drink coffee.
As I get older, I avoid funerals because they all start at or about 9 a.m. and I’m not a mourning person. I contacted TJ Maxx on your behalf. It checked your return and verified that it was the correct Gucci bag. It also agreed to refund your purchase but said you had to drop your PayPal dispute first. Once you did, you received a refund of $1,162.

Like many of you, The Foundation is continuing to adapt to the "new normal" with this pandemic. During the past two years, we have continued to serve clients by phone and email through the Information Resource Center. We've also expanded new programs such as Coffee Connection and Friendship Tree that work to connect isolated seniors with aging experts or our team of volunteers. Read more about our successes in our recent Annual Report. Help us raise funds to continue this legacy!
Become a Matching Donor
The Foundation needs support from sponsors and corporations to help reach a matching goal amount of $5,000. We have several donors who have already committed, including the Foundation’s board members. Please help us increase the impact of this campaign by committing your gift by June 30, 2022.
Matching donors will have their logo appear in the direct mail letter, on the Foundation’s website, in email marketing and through several social media posts.
Now, after six years of serving seniors in North County through the resource center, we hope to create even more tremendous opportunities to serve our clientele. If you are moved to donate, please know how grateful we are to have your support.
Please visit our fundraising page at www.thefoundationforseniorwellbeing.org/donate and make a gift that will be matched today.

This handsome guy is Henny! He's quite the love bug who enjoys cuddling with his favorite humans. As much as he enjoys lounging around on the couch, Henny also loves to stay active. He needs lots of exercise and ongoing positive reinforcement training. He would do best in a quiet home with a small household size and a family who loves adventure as much as he does! Henny is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Drive. To learn more about making him part of your family, please visit sdhumane.org/adopt or call 619-2997012.

Keeping Kids Safe
Pools, lakes, and beaches mean summer fun and cool relief from hot weather. However, water can also be dangerous for kids if proper precautions are not taken. The Vista Fire Department recommends adult supervision always be present when children are around the water. The good news is there are many ways to keep your kids safe in or around water. Enrolling kids in swim lessons and learning CPR are proactive steps to keeping a child safe. Other safety tips include keeping a first aid kit poolside and removing objects such as toys that could entice a child into the pool area. Removing lawn chairs/furniture, so that a child cannot use it to climb into a fenced pool area is another safety tip. If you would like more information on keeping your child safe around water, please contact Vista Fire at 760.643.2801. Water play can be a great source of fun and exercise and you'll enjoy the water experience more by knowing and practicing these safety precautions.

Greetings Escondido,
I had the opportunity to help with a tour of city hall by High School students in a “government” class. As part of the tour, we talked a lot about how local government worked and many of them had just turned 18 or were about to turn 18 before the election. I have to admit, I haven’t been that exposed to that age since my own children were younger. I was impressed by their concern for the community, interest in its future, and overall understanding of the challenges we face today. I walked away feeling confident in our future even though I wondered about their style of clothing. But that wonder went away quickly when I looked at some old pictures of my friends in High School.
Since we are in the graduation season, I would like to offer my congratulations to all the graduates of 2022 and their families. We all know that you worked hard to achieve this goal and that sometimes it wasn’t easy. Your persistence has now paid off and that trait will serve you well in life. I hope you feel proud because you should. We have high hopes for your success.
Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe!

I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect."
And then the fight started........
I recently paid a visit to the Camarillo State Mental Hospital here in California.A number of the patients were standing in the courtyard serenading us with "Ave Maria." They were singing it absolutely beautifully!
Oddly, each of them was hold a red apple in one hand and tapping it rhythmically with a pencil.
After the performance I approached the conductor.
I shot my desk one time. You can smirk, but that desk hasn't given me any trouble since!
"Each of us is a mixture of some good and some not so good qualities. In considering one's fellow man it's important to remember the good things, and to realize his faults only prove he's a human being. But $160,140 isn't so bad if you break it down. It translates into $8,896.66 a year, $741.38 a month, or $171.08 a week. That's a mere $24.24 a day! Just over a dollar an hour.
Still, you might think the best financial advice says don't have children if you want to be "rich." It is just the opposite.
What do your get for your $160,140?
Naming rights. First, middle, and last!
Glimpses of God every day. Giggles under the covers every night.
More love than your heart can hold. Butterfly kisses and Velcro hugs.
Endless wonder over rocks, ants, clouds, and warm cookies.
A hand to hold, usually covered with jam. A partner for blowing bubbles, flying kites, building sandcastles, and skipping down the sidewalk in the pouring rain.
Someone to laugh yourself silly with no matter what the boss said or how your stocks performed that day.
For $160,140, you never have to grow up.
You get to finger-paint, carve pumpkins, play hide-and-seek, catch lightning bugs, and never stop believing in Santa Claus.

Why do “seniors” lose three billion dollars annually to Internet scams? Part I of II
When we opened The Computer Factory in 1995, few of our customers were “seniors” (over 60), and neither were we. As the Internet grew to become an ever more important part of our daily lives, that began to change. In the 1990’s, parents who learned to use PCs at work, began to purchase PCs for family and home use. Fast forward to today and those “parents” have become “seniors.” In 1990 fewer than 5% of Americans were using the Internet. By 2000, 50% of Americans were connected. Today over 90% of Americans are Internet connected including nearly 80% of “seniors.” Americans of all ages connect with smart phones, tablets and PCs to communicate, bank, shop, learn, game, gamble, stock trade or be entertained etc. Encyclopedias, dictionaries and reference books gather dust as the Internet is today the main reference source for information. Almost no human activity has been left untouched by the ever growing reach of the Internet. Nothing in human history even comes close to the Worldwide impact the Internet has had on mankind in the past thirty years. Certainly there are positive and negative aspects to the worldwide obsession with the Internet, but it is certain that “connectedness” good or bad, is here to stay.
There has always been a tendency to ascribe any negative behavior observed in an elderly person as simply an unpleasant but inevitable consequence of aging. A slip, a fall, auto accident forgetfulness or ill temper may indeed be a result of age related diminished capacity but not necessarily. These things all happen to younger people too, but unfortunate events or behaviors involving seniors are automatically assumed to be related to the ageing process. The condescending behavior of younger generations toward seniors is well meant and sometimes appreciated, but all too often can make seniors feel uncomfortable and undervalued.
Until the last century, the average LEB (Life Expectancy at Birth) everywhere on Earth was between 35 and 40 years. Some of us have always been able “beat the odds” and survive to a ripe old age, well beyond our productive and reproductive years, but evolution has optimized our bodies to accommodate our reproductive lifespan. Our minds are sharpest at 18 and our muscle strength at 25. We hold on to most of these assets until around 40 and then we begin the long slow decline in brain and muscle power. Through rigorous mental and physical exercise we can maintain and even increase our strength and mental acuity well into our golden years, but that takes a lot of work and discipline, more than most of us are willing to commit. But there is a wonderful offset to the gradual deterioration of our mental and physical capabilities, we humans never stop learning. Experience and education can more than compensate for the loss of a few million neurons each year. A summary of scientific studies in the March 17th “Business Insider” provided the following statistics. We peak in earning power in our late 40s, mathematic ability around 50, our ability to understand others emotions in our early 50s, our vocabulary tops out in our 70s and 82 year olds have the highest feeling of psychological well being. With a lifetime of learning and experience it seems odd that Internet scammers would make “seniors” their number one targets and victims. In Part II of this column next week we discuss the reasons why “seniors” are targets, the tactics scammers use to steal their money, the idiosyncracies that make them susceptible to scams and what countermeasures can be used to insulate “seniors” against Internet fraud.

The doctor told her that teenagers today were very willful and any attempt to stop the girl would probably result in rebellion. He then told her to arrange for her daughter to be put on birth control and until then, talk to her and give her a box of condoms.
Later that evening, as her daughter was preparing for a date, the mother told her about the situation and handed her a box of condoms.
The girl burst out laughing and reached over to hug her mother, saying, 'Oh Mom! You don't have to worry about that! I'm dating Susan!'
Brenda and Steve took their six-yearold son to the doctor.
With some hesitation, they explained that although their little angel appeared to be in good health, they were concerned about his rather small penis. young guide led them through the process of cheese making, explaining that goat's milk was used. She showed the group a lovely hillside where many goats were grazing. 'These' she explained, 'Are the older goats put out to pasture when they no longer produce.'
She then asked, 'What do you do in America with your old goats?'
A spry old gentleman answered, 'They send us on bus tours.”

You get to be a hero just for retrieving a Frisbee off the garage roof, taking the training wheels off the bike, removing a splinter, filling a wading pool, coaxing a wad of gum out of bangs, and coaching a baseball team that never wins but always gets treated to ice cream regardless.
You get a front row seat to history to witness the first step, first word, first bra, first date, and first time behind the wheel.
You get to be immortal.
You get another branch added to your family tree, and if you're lucky, a long list of limbs in your obituary called grandchildren.
You get an education in psychology, nursing, criminal justice, communications, and human sexuality that no college can match.
In the eyes of a child, you rank right up there with God.
You have all the power to heal a booboo, scare away the monsters under the bed, patch a broken heart, police a slumber party, ground them forever, and love them without limits, so one day they will, like you, love without counting the cost. "Why not?" she asked.
I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "(1), they don't like me, and (2), I don't like them."
His mother replied, "I'll give YOU two good reasons why YOU SHOULD go to church. (1) You're 59 years old, and (2) you're the pastor!"
The mother of a 17-year-old girl was concerned that her daughter was having sex...
After examining the child, the doctor confidently declared, 'Just feed him pancakes. That should solve the prob
lem.' The next morning when the boy arrived at breakfast, there was a large stack of warm pancakes in the middle of the table.
'Gee, Mom,' he exclaimed. 'For me?'
'Just take two,' Brenda replied. 'The rest are for your father.'
A Doctor was addressing a large audience in Tampa . 'The material we put into our stomachs is enough to have killed most of us sitting here, years ago.. Red meat is awful. Soft drinks corrode your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG. High fat diets can be disastrous, and none of us realizes the long-term harm caused by the germs in our drinking water. However, there is one thing that is the most dangerous of all and we all have eaten, or will eat it. Can anyone here tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?'
After several seconds of quiet, a 75year-old man in the front row raised his hand, and softly said, 'Wedding Cake.'
Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blondehaired woman who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm and who hangs over Bob's arm and listens intently to his every word.
His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, 'Bob, how'd you get the trophy girlfriend?' Bob replies, 'Girlfriend? She's my wife!' They are knocked over, but continue to ask.
'So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?'
'I lied about my age', Bob replies.
'What, did you tell her you were only 50?'
Bob smiles "Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your puppies."
"Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat off the back of his neck, "These puppies come from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."
The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a handful of change and held it up to the farmer. "I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take a look?"
"Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out a whistle. "Here, Dolly!" he called.
Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the chain link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.
Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably smaller. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward the others, doing its best to catch up...
"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said,
"Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able to run and play with you like these other dogs would."
With that the little boy stepped back from the fence, reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his trousers.
In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made shoe.
Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir, I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone who understands." With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and picked up the little pup.
Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy. "How much?" asked the little boy..
