Let’s face it. We’ve all had dads, and it’s a ‘given’ that dads can be the funniest people on planet Earth.

And without even trying. Unlike professional comedians, dads don’t need any script writers, or fancy Hollywood producers to create their humor for them -- nope, dads are organically funny; that is, they are naturally funny without pretense or any artificial coloring added.

when they’re getting older when they fart, cough, sneeze, and pee all at the same time!”

I’ve never been a dad and I’m not sure I want to be, especially after reading a description of fatherhood on the back of an old, rusty car which read: “A father carries pictures of his wallet where his money used to be.”

I just may pass on being a dad, primarily, because I’m a handful to myself, let alone having any kids to take care of.

Comedian, Jim Gaffigan, is no comfort when he

describes fatherhood: “Whenever people ask me what’s it’s like to be a father, and have 4 kids, well, I just tell them ‘picture that you’re drowning, then someone hands you a baby.’”

At Escondido’s annual summerlong “Cruisin’ Grand” event, where muscle cars and vintage and classic automobiles are paraded against the backdrop of 1950s and 1960s rock ‘n’ roll music, there is no shortage of elderly dads to interview. Many proudly sport their “Old Guys Rule” t-shirts as a proud testimonial for having survived fatherhood.

I overheard two proud dads chatting by a red 1957 Chevy Corvette: “Hey, Bob! Why aren’t you home?!”

Bob answers: “Cause right now, my house is haunted!”

Bob’s friend looks puzzled, then asks: “Haunted? By what?”

That’s when I hear Bob reply: “My mother-in-law is there! She’s spending the summer with us!!”

Bob, who hotfoots it to Cruisin’ Grand when his mother-in-law visits. Like true Ninja warriors, all dads know how to disappear when it comes time to change diapers; help clean-up the house; attend Church services; and entertaining visiting mothers-in-law.

Think I’m kidding? Well, there is actually a book available through Amazon.com which has proven to be the hottest gift for Father’s Day. It’s called “Crouching Father, Hidden Toddler: A Zen Guide for New Dads,” by author C. W. Nevius. The book contains “the treasured wisdom that will help new dads master the Buddha-like patience required to be on the receiving end of flying projectiles of pureed spinach, or other items thrown at them by sleep-deprived moms.” The book also helps fathers learn Ninja-like instincts to know when a child will bite! And the strength of a “Samurai Warrior in facing-down a Mt. Fuji of diapers.”

Don’t kid yourself. It’s no easy task being a dad. There’s a lifetime of daunting things to learn, such as “Hostage Negotiation Skills,” which dads have to sometimes use when negotiating with their wives about the frequency of mothers-inlaw visiting their house.

The Mechanic and The Cardiologist

A Lexus mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of a LS460 when he spotted a well known cardiologist in his shop.

The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his car when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?"

The cardiologist, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working.

The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag and asked, "So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything damaged, and then put everything back in, and when I finished, it worked just like new. So how is it that I make $48,000 a year and you make $1.7M, when you and I are doing basically the same work?"

Navy veteran, father of 6 grown kids, and a grandfather 12times-over, earning him the nickname of “Grandpa” from fellow employees at Poway’s Hunter Douglas Corp. Ambriz tells me of the trials and tribulations of senior dads, growing older in their autumn years: “As all dads get older, they begin to pee a lot! Their damned prostate gland gets the size of a tuna boat and the bladder begins bossing them around! For example, in the middle of the night I have to crawl out of a warm bed to pee. Again. And then again! All these nightly interruptions begin to annoy us elderly dads. One night I had to get up. Went to the bathroom. Then I stood there, like a damned idiot, just waiting – but without even a damned tinkle!

With my hands on my hips, I just stared down at my plumbing, below. Running out of patience, and still looking down, I finally shouted out loud: “Damnit!! This was YOUR idea!!”

That’s when my wife called out from the bed: “Who are you talking to?”

And I shouted back: “No one you would remember!!”

Often, dads can be proud of the strangest moments in their life.

Comedian, Steven Wright, said that his dad was always proud of the fact that he was cesarean born, as opposed to natural child birth. A The cardiologist paused, leaned over, and then whispered to the mechanic.......

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense

Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years.

No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.

He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).

His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place.

Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.

Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.

It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to

As dads get older, they often wear their pants higher and higher. Often plaid pants. When I was 9-yearsold I remember my best friend, Billy Olsten, telling me: “My dad’s pants keep getting higher and higher. I dunno. I’m just afraid that when he reaches 60 he’ll just be a pair of pants with a head on it.”

For any kid, that image can be frightening.

I remember watching Jerry Seinfeld on TV when he said: “You can tell what was the best year of your father’s life, because they seem to freeze that clothing style and ride it out.”

Dads have their own unique views in life that are often very confusing to us kids. When I was a very small child, 5-years of age, one of my favorite songs was “If You’re Happy and You Know It – Clap Your Hands!!” Then, one day I overhead dad telling my mom: “You know, there should be a children’s song that says: ‘If You’re Happy and You Know It, Keep It to Yourself and Let Your Daddy Sleep.’” administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.

Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and, criminals received better treatment than their victims.

Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.

Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot.

She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.

Common Sense was preceded in death, -by his parents, Truth and Trust, -by his wife, Discretion, -by his daughter, Responsibility, -and by his son, Reason.

He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers: - I Know My Rights - I Want It Now - Someone Else Is To Blame - I'm A Victim - Pay me for Doing Nothing

Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone. If you still remember him, pass this on. If not, join the majority and do nothing.

SNOWING ALL NIGHT

It’s been snowing all night. morning goes like this

So the

8:00 I made a snowman.

8:10 A feminist passed by and asked me why I didn’t make a snow woman.

I loved my dad deeply, but, to be honest – he wasn’t the most patient person I ever knew. Our conversations often seemed strange to him.

For example, once, when he carried me on his shoulders he said to me: “Son, if you keep pulling my hair, you’ll have to get off my shoulders.”

That’s when I answered: “But, Dad, I’m just trying to get my bubble gum back!”

Another time, when he was bending over tying my shoes, I noticed that dad had a small circle of missing hair from the top of his head. That’s when I said in front of our neighbors: “Dad, you have a hole in your head!”

Later that evening at the supper table, mom asked dad: “Did you get your feelings hurt when he said you had a hole in your head?”

That’s when my dad said, “No, not physically. You know, I hate bubble gum!”

Dads have their own unique views and thoughts about fatherhood.

Comedian Ray Romano said: “Having children is like living in a college fraternity house – nobody sleeps, everything’s broken, and there’s a lot of throwing up.”

8:45 Local TV news crew shows up. I am asked if I know the difference between snowmen and snow-women? I reply, "Snowballs" and am called a sexist.

8:52 My phone is seized and thoroughly checked while I am being blindfolded and flown to the police station in a helicopter.

9:00 I'm on the news as a suspected terrorist bent on stirring up trouble during this difficult weather.

9:10 I am asked if I have any accomplices.

9:29 A little known jihadist group has claimed it was their plot.

Moral: There is no moral to this story.

The Carlsbad Village Association (CVA) will host its annual Flicks at the Fountain, a weekly series of family-fun films at Carlsbad Village’s prominent fountain at the corner of State Street and Grand Avenue. The free movies make their big screen debut on July 5, 2018 at dusk, or around 8:00 p.m., and continue each Thursday evening until August 9, 2018.

Famous author, Ernest Hemingway, said: “To be a successful father, there’s one absolute rule: When you have a kid, don’t look at it for the first two years.”

But leave it to the master, Mark Twain, to get it right: “When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant, I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in 7 years!”

I quickly learned in school that Father’s Day has been around like, forever. According to my teacher, it started way back during the Middle Ages and then spread to almost every country on Earth.

We Americans celebrate Father’s Day every third Sunday in June. But in other countries Father’s Day can fall during the months of May or even March.

That’s when I answered: “This is my father.”

When dad was going to punish you with a spanking, he would give you “Previews” what was coming, as if you were sitting in a movie theatre watching the “Coming Attractions!” For instance, he would say: “You know what’s coming, doncha? Remember the belt? You want me to get the belt?!

Because the belt is coming!”

All dads have a set of rules which they follow. Rule 1: Whenever I would do something wrong, I belonged to my mom, because it was her fault. These rules begin very early in child-rearing, as with Rule 2: As a toddler I quickly knew that whenever I learned a new word and made dad proud, or made him laugh out loud, I belonged to daddy.

But, when my sagging diaper smelled like a landfill, I belonged to mom, again. Then, later in life, there is Rule 3: When dad is watching football on TV and mom happens to trip and fall down while carrying snacks for everyone, mom will have to wait till halftime before dad will leave the couch and help her up again.

That’s just the way all dads think and function. Especially during the NFL playoffs.

Dads come in all sorts of shapes, colors and sizes, but don’t let that fool you. They all come pre-assembled to act, talk, and behave in the exact same way. For example, all

dads have a tool box in their garage which they love to show off to other visiting dads. The topic of tools usually comes up when dads are sitting in the living room talking sports: “Hey, Bob, did I ever show you the new set of tools I just got?”

That’s when the sparks begin to fly – literally. Sometimes dad will fire up the ol’ electric drill set or rev up the electric buzz saw. When mom sees the lights dim in the house, she knows that dad is showing off his arsenal of Black and Decker tools.

All alpha-dads love to show off their fix-it skills by strapping on a heavy utility belt full of various tools and walk around the house. If they see something that is broken, you can usually tell within the first 5 seconds if dad’s in over his head.

He’ll usually stare at the broken appliance for a while and then rub his chin and say something under his breath like, “Hmm, the doohickey has come out of the thingamabob, so I think the thingamajig is hanging off the whatchamacallit.”

If you’re standing next to dad when he’s saying all of this, well, it usually all translates to: “Son, go get the duct tape.” Dads can fix just about anything with duct tape.

You see, dads can’t help trying to fix things with their tools; they have tools encoded in their genetic makeup, it’s in their genes, pure and sim-

The Escondido Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a DUI/Driver’s License checkpoint on June 9, 2018, at Centre City Parkway and Decatur. Checkpoints are placed in locations that have the greatest opportunity for achieving drunk and drugged driving deterrence and provide the greatest safety for officers and the public.

High Visibility Enforcements, which include DUI/Driver’s License checkpoints, have been shown to lower DUI deaths and injuries. A major component of these checkpoints are the deterrent effects it has on those who might drive alcohol or drug impaired, bringing about more awareness and encouraging everyone to use sober designated drivers.

Drivers whose only offense was being unlice nsed to drive were given the opportunity to locate the registered owner of the vehicle to either take or assign possession of the vehicle to a licensed driver. 9 vehicles were released to the owner or a designated driver. During the checkpoint, 8 vehicles were impounded Following are additional results from this event: 1472 vehicles drove through the checkpoint.

854 vehicles were screened in primary.

53 vehicles were sent to secondary screening (drivers who could

not produce a driver’s license or who were suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs) 33 total citations were issued during the checkpoint. (7 for suspended license, 18 for unlicensed driver, 9 for no insurance, 1 subject was cited for allowing an unlicensed person to drive).

Studies of California drivers have shown that 30 percent of drivers in fatal crashes had one or more drugs in their systems. A study of active drivers showed more tested positive for drugs that may impair driving (14 percent) than did for alcohol (7.3 percent). Of the drugs, marijuana was most prevalent, at 7.4 percent, slightly more than alcohol.

Drivers caught driving impaired can expect the impact of a DUI arrest to include jail time, fines, fees, DUI classes, license suspension and other expenses that can exceed $10,000 not to mention the embarrassment when friends and family find out.

Escondido High Schools Graduates 1700 Students

On Friday, June 1st, 1700 students graduated from Escondido High Schools, including Escondido High School (548 graduates), Orange Glen (393 graduates, San Pasqual (512 graduates), Del Lago Academy (161 graduates). The previous evening Valley High (90 bicyclists . . . all come together to make for a pleasant atmosphere.

Carlsbad would be a great place to live.

It's just a different atmosphere and lifestyle there. Lots of tourists, yes, but the locals make the atmosphere relaxed, casual, fun, and healthy.

Every year I say the same damned thing.

Every year, when we enjoy our time share week at Tamarack Beach Resort in Carlsbad, right on the Beach, I wonder to myself, "why don't I come back here more often?

I'm always so relaxed when I come here."

I don't think there's a much more relaxing state than to be sitting or strolling at the beach, on the beach itself or on its boardwalk, and just watching the waves roll in . . . and listening to the sound. Whenever I find a cozy spot to sit down and just watch the ocean . . . I unwind rather quickly. I feel good. The salty air smells good . . . the sights of the many pedestrians walking or jogging, many with their pups, of the

A number of voters had expressed concern that she had only recently been elected to her supervisor's position and tried to jump too soon into Congress.

Diane L. Harkey won the election for a Congressional Seat in the 49th District.

In the 50th Congressional District, incumbent Duncan Hunter appears to have won his battle. His democratic challenger Ammar CampaNajjar, who came in second.

I suggested to Evelyn that we think about moving to Carlsbad but she put the kibosh on that quickly.

She has too many friends, is involved in too many Escondido activities.

That's true . . . but I still would kinda like to live in Carlsbad. We'll see what happens.

Evelyn's youngest son, Marty, lives in Carlsbad. Both Marty and his son, Tyler, are avid surfers and Bali is a great place to surf. It's also a great spot to vacation . . but it's a 17 hour plane ride. Marty's son, Tyler, lives there full time and comes home occasionally, just recently returning to Bali (Marty and his lady love are there now, on holiday). Principle mode of transportation there is the Vespa motor scooter, about $5 to 6 per week.

Evelyn had grilled Mahi-Mahi recently.

Just a neat place to stay. If you have a need to get away and relax and to thoroughly enjoy your time off, I strongly recommend the Tamarack Beach Resort. It can be difficult securing a room, particularly this time of year but, trust me it's worth the effort.

We enjoy dinner at the next door neighbor to Tamarack . . . a lovely restaurant, Dini's. My first night there I had the rib-eye steak . . . as always, delicious.

My second night there we had the fish and chips dinner and a glass of Riesling wine. The fish and chips at only $15 is a real buy. A large serving of fish, plenty of chips, and the atmosphere can't be beat. You look out on the Pacific Ocean, breathe in the salty air, enjoy fine food and good wine , . . and you actually find yourself relaxed . . . so much so that you sleep the night away - with no disturbances.

Life is good.

In fact, science has proven that the DNA of all dads is shaped like a tool box.

Dads are also basically the same in the way they talk to one another.

They have their own language and expressions that only other dads can (fully) understand. They say secret things in ‘Dad Speak,’ kinda like when religious folk speak in ‘tongues’ at revival meetings.

When I was only 6 years old I heard my dad ask his friend: “So, Willy, how’s life treating you?” That’s when Willy spoke in Dad Speak: “Oh, I dunno. According to my wife I’m happily married.”

I remember watching dad shaking his head and he also began to talk in Dad Speak: “Yeah, I hear you. But if it weren’t for marriage, men would go through life thinking they had no faults at all.”

Another time I heard one of dad’s friends, Mr. Henderson, complain in coded Dad Speak, “My sex life is like shooting billiards with a rope.”

That’s when I heard Mr. Henderson say he was going to visit Viagra Falls that year.

All dads love beer and love to shout during TV sports events. As a small kid I used to run bases for my dad during these testosterone sports

gatherings. But instead of bases I’d run beer from the fridge to anyone sitting empty-handed on the couch.

It was a tough job for a 6-year-old because my legs were short and dad’s friends could sure keep me running.

It’s only a matter of time during these marathon beer runs when one of the dads will eventually ask you to pull his finger. It makes no difference if your dad is from China, Russia, Europe or America – they will ask you, in their respective language, to “pull my finger.” It’s a universal trait because all dads accumulate gas and beer accelerates this process. Mom said dad’s beer gut is actually a liquid grain storage facility.

In any case, I think in Russian, “pull my finger” roughly translates to: “Trigger finger schtinken muffler siss boom,” but I’m not sure.

After so many beers, they all begin to talk and sound funny and it’s not always easy to understand them.

When I asked my dad’s good friend, Mr. Tatum, what his favorite beer is he said to me: “An open one.”

That’s when I knew I had to run back to the fridge.

I think Father’s Day is one of the coolest days of the year because dad is plenty worth it. And he comes without a price tag. There’s no cash register in the world that can ‘ring up’ dad, simply because he’s priceless. How do you repay someone

who has protected you, financially supported you, and taught you priceless pearls of wisdom, like: “When you get married Son, never go to bed angry with your wife.

Stay up and fight.”

A lot of what dad said made a lot of sense. He taught me how to fight fair: “Don’t raise your voice – improve your argument.”

Yep, that’s dad, all right.

But, then again, dads know how to fight dirty if they have to. So, the ‘don’t raise your voice – improve your argument’ philosophy sometimes flies out the window. For instance, when my grandpa was a young dad he did not take a shine to his next door neighbor, Mr. Peeves, but he never showed it openly. But when Mr. Peeves’ little boy turned 4-years-old, my grandpa gave him a trumpet for his birthday present.

Odd thing was . . . Mr. Peeves was never known to be an early-riser.

But that all changed at his little boy’s birthday party.

Dads come with various nicknames, such as “Pop” or “Daddy” or “ATM machine.” Mom especially sees daddy as an ATM machine. I’ve heard dads say that moms have stretch-marks but the stretch-marks are all on their credit cards because moms over-use them. Johnny Rosenstiel swears that his dad refused to report his stolen credit card because the thief was spending less money than his mom.

threw a shotgun shell at his daughter’s date and said: “It moves a lot faster after 10 p.m.!”

Then again, rules completely change with Christian dads, who are always polite, subtle and, well, more Christian-like. All Christian dads talk differently than nonChristian dads. But, all Christian dads talk the same way to anyone wanting to date their daughter, such as: “Date my daughter? Of course. What time will you be picking both of us up?”

Basically though, despite their various methods, attitudes, and actions, dads are all the same: they love us completely and will do all in their power to keep us safe and happy.

I went to a regular public school but dad used to drive me and my older brother to Catechism classes on Saturday where we would learn religious things and read from the Bible. I was extremely shy and never raised my hand in class. I judged the world around me by the things I learned from watching my dad. For instance, when my friend, Joey Masiewicz, joked that Moses wandered around the desert for 40 years because he was too stubborn to stop and ask for directions, I believed him. Cause it sounded just like dad when we’d get lost in the family car.

According to my teacher, a lot of what we are is inherited from our parents’ genes. It’s just plain science of genetics. I told my school friend Jonathan Lieberman that I have a lot of my dad’s genes.

That’s when Jonathan said to me, “Really? I bet they don’t fit you.”

That’s also the day I stopped talking to Jonathan Lieberman for at least a month of Sundays. When he said that, it just made me plain angry and confused the hell outta me at the same time. I told dad what my friend Jonathan said and my dad just shook the paper he was reading in front of him and said, “Oh, that’s nice, Son.”

To tell you the truth, I’m not really sure dad was listening to me that day.

Dads just love their cars. They use their cars for everything, even when playing.

Rodney Dangerfield used to say that his dad would play tag with him – using the family car. And that would really scare Dangerfield, what with a car chasing behind him, well, naturally, Rodney never wanted to get tagged.

Rodney Dangerfield once said that his exasperated and nervous dad told him to stop running around in circles. When little Rodney said he couldn’t stop running in circles -that’s when his dad nailed down Rodney’s other shoe.

In true life, Rodney Dangerfield was very close to his dad who, in

turn, was his greatest fan.

I’m fully aware that all dads are priceless and also the smartest people on any subject in the world.

For example, dads teach us that human logic and reason separates us from the lower animals. And also – unlike cats and dogs – we’re not afraid of the vacuum cleaner.

No question that dads are super smart, but, what confuses me is why they sometimes don’t have better listening skills.

For instance, I had heard about what happened at my friend Joey’s house. At dinnertime Joey asked his dad if bugs were good to eat.

“Let’s not talk about such things at the dinner table, Son,” was his dad’s answer. After dinner was over, Joey’s dad asked, “Now, Son, what did you want to ask me?”

That’s when pal Joey said, “Oh, nothing, Dad. There was just a bug in your soup, but now it’s gone.”

I’m not sure if that story is completely true or not, but, I do believe that dads don’t always have the best listening skills. That’s because they’re thinking of very advanced scientific things at the dinner table and smaller things are just not that important. Such as bugs.

Nonetheless, all dads are advanced thinkers. In fact, dads are mostly responsible for all the things you see around you, like television, computers, jet airplanes, automobiles, DVDs, cell phones, and Facebook.

Some dads are grandpas so they are known as ‘senior dads’ and are just a different sort of dad.

Because a lot of senior dads remember the Great Depression when they were small, they all learned to be super smart in saving money, the smart way. For example, if it’s too expensive to have a brake job done on a senior dad’s car, they’ll just ask the mechanic to make the car horn louder. I heard that one senior dad had his mechanic make his car horn sound like “gun shots.” I don’t know if that’s really true or not, but, I heard that car horn sure knew how to make congested traffic move out of the way -- fast!

Some senior dads can be overlycheap, though. My friend, Billy Thornton, swears that when his dad broke his arm playing football, his grandpa took his dad down to the airport to get a free X-ray by making him lie down with the luggage.

Grandpa dads remember the old black telephones without dials and when a ‘live,’ lady operator would ask “Number, please?” and grandpa would say the telephone number, like: “Belmont 9-4773, please.” Sometimes the phones came with a ‘party line’ on it, so grandpa dads could eavesdrop on their neighbors’ conversations if

Mercedes Benz is now making a new “A” Class Sedan, which means smaller and less expensive. I’ve always viewed Mercedes as better not bigger in comparison with the majority of manufacturers. With the stingy, snug parking spaces of today I find it much easier for most seniors (me included) to park. Smaller sedans are more maneuverable, which translates to more confidence for the older driver. This is contrary to the opinion many people .

With its $46 billion agricultural economy, California is the most productive farm state in the nation.

Agriculture is vital for California, and women farmers are central to the continued viability of this critical sector of our economy, including within this region. California’s 40,000 women farmers manage 9.5 million acres with an economic impact of $1.6 billion. According to Julie Walker, the San Diego County Farm Bureau’s Farmer of the Year for 2017, 30% of all San Diego County farms are operated by women, and with over 14% of the nation’s agricultural exports originating in this state, their impact extends worldwide.

Organizations like California Women for Agriculture (CWA), established in 1975 in the Coachella Valley, support California agriculture through public education and advocacy. Having 20 chapters and more than 1,600 members statewide, CWA, one of the most active all-volunteer agricultural organizations in California, actively engages with the Legislature. In their own words, the San Diego Chapter of CWA "is a diverse group of women working to protect our local farms. We believe in the economic vitality of agriculture, the food security and

freshness that local agriculture provides...".

Our local San Diego County Farm Bureau, CA Farm Bureau and California Women in Agriculture are important advocates when contentious issues that significantly impact agriculture, including statewide water policies, natural resource conservation, transportation, labor, energy costs, etc. are discussed by policymakers in Sacramento.

California’s agriculture industry must be supported and sustained.

they were careful enough to pick up the phone, quietly, off the cradle.

An occasional obscene phone call would come through and people would just learn to hang-up whenever they heard heavy breathing.

Grandpa once hung up on Pastor Jones – but only because the honorable church pastor was asthmatic and was having an asthma attack on the phone and grandpa just mistook Pastor Jones’ heavy breathing for another obscene phone call.

Also, tree-climbing was an art form back then in senior dad’s day along with tree houses, and fishing down at the creek and catching tadpoles in a jar. Even simple things, like saying prayer before eating with the entire family at the dinner table was important back then – not with family members split apart with some kids eating in their rooms, or in front of the TV set, or while playing video games in their rooms.

Some things are hard to swallow, though. For example, dad swears that grandpa once had a strange device called ‘rabbit ears’ that he put on top of his old black-andwhite television set and he’d just move ‘em around a bit for better reception. And if that story doesn’t take the cake, well, grandpa also said he only had three TV channels to choose from 6, 8, and 10. That’s it.

I was a handful when I was small. I noticed grandpa learned to drink more whenever he had to babysit me. It was probably just coincidence.

Dads are well-trained by moms.

That’s because moms speak in their own lingo so dads have to pay close attention to actually decode what moms are REALLY saying to them.

Here’s a 2018 revised list of code words which moms use a lot, along with the real meaning behind them, which all dads have to memorize.

1. “Fine.” This is a code word that moms use to end an argument when they are right and dads need to shut up or else. All living dads know this. Science proves that dads can actually live 5 to 10 years longer knowing this.

2. “Five Minutes.” If mom is getting dressed, five minutes means 45 minutes to an hour. All dads know this because it’s the same thing when dads say: “I’m on my way.”

3. “Go Ahead.” This is actually a dare, not permission to do something. All dads know this code. It is dangerous to actually ‘go ahead’ and do it.

4. “A Loud Sigh.” This noise which moms make is really telling dad that he is an absolute drooling idiot and needs to be put on medication or put on a straitjacket. Dads know this sound.

5. “Don’t Worry About It.” This is a very dangerous phrase for all dads. It is mom’s way of telling dad not to worry about it because right now she needs time to think long and hard in deciding how dad is going to pay for this later on.

Through thick and thin, through all ups-and-downs in life, dad will always be there for us. They may not all be perfect, but their love for us often is.

Father’s Day is only once a year, but, rarely do we thank dads for everyday-things we take for granted. When I was in high school I wrote this down: “Thanks Dad, for putting food on our table, and giving us a place we can call home.

And Dad, thanks for working so hard to pay all the bills and giving me lunch money besides. And even though you were tired, Dad, you worked overtime to be able to send me to summer camp with all the other kids. And Dad, you even secretly saved to buy me that bicycle for my 12th birthday which you hid from me in the garage to surprise me. Dad, you didn’t always say you loved me in words, but you showed me in so many ways.”

Best friend, Mike Romero, always called his dad “Pop.” And I always liked the ring of that. Three, short, simple letters that, somehow, convey a vast uncharted universe of emotion, love, and closeness. I remember his mom and dad in their greener years. Their home was my second home.

For reasons unknown, I always took my girlfriends there. And sometimes, when the air is still, and the mood is right, I can still hear Mike calling out to his dad: “Pop.” And always with sunshine in that one word, which said it all.

While writing this story, I clearly remember driving to the beach and surfing the radio dial and suddenly hearing R&B singer, Luther Vandross. I was about to change the station but, suddenly, became entranced by the soft, gentle lyrics of a song called “Dance With My Father.” The lyrics rang clear in both timeless truth and bittersweet memories: “My father would lift me high/And dance with my mother and me and then/Spin me around till I fell asleep/Then up the stairs he would carry me/And I knew for sure I was loved.”

American author, Gloria Naylor (1950-2016) once wrote a simple truth, in simple words, that still tugs at the heartstrings: “Old as she was, she still missed her Daddy sometimes.”

Happy Father’s Day to all dads, everywhere. We love and cherish you 364 days out of the year. Like mom, you are God-sent.

On April 14, Lincoln was shot, dying the next day. Davis expressed regret at the U.S. President’s death. He later said he believed Lincoln would have been less harsh with the South than his successor, Andrew Johnson. In the aftermath, Johnson issued a $100,000 reward for the capture of Davis and accused him of helping to plan Lincoln’s assassination.

As the Confederate military structure fell into disarray, the search for Davis by Union forces intensified.

Part II – Jefferson Davis: A Man Without A Country

One of the most complex Americans in history was a soldier, a patriot, a statesman, and then a traitor. Such is a description that would fit Jefferson Davis.

Davis was sworn in as Provisional President of the Confederate States of America on Feb. 18, 1861, on the steps of the Alabama State Capitol.

President Davis met with his Confederate Cabinet for the last time on May 5, 1865, in Washington, Georgia, and officially dissolved the Confederate government. Davis and his wife Varina Davis were captured by Union forces on May 10 at Irwinville. Georgia.

On May 19, 1865, Davis was imprisoned in a casemate at Fortress Monroe on the coast of Virginia. Irons were riveted to his ankles at the order of General Nelson Miles. Davis was allowed no visitors, and no books except the Bible.

In 1866, Davis was indicted for treason while imprisoned. Soon after, General Miles was transferred and Davis received better treatment. He was never tried and was released after two years.

In 1881, Davis completed a memoir entitled The Rise and Fall of the Confederate Government. By the late 1880s, he began to encourage reconciliation, telling Southerners to be loyal to the Union.

On Nov. 6, 1889, Davis left Beauvoir to visit his Brierfield plantation. He embarked on a steamboat in New Orleans during a sleety rain and fell ill during the trip. According to Fenner, just when Davis again appeared to be improving, he lost consciousness on the evening of Dec. 5 and died at 12:45 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6, 1889.

Davis was the first choice because of his strong political and military credentials.

He wanted to serve as commander-inchief of the Confederate armies but said he would serve wherever directed. His wife Varina Davis later wrote that when he received word that he had been chosen as president, "Reading that telegram he looked so grieved that I feared some evil had befallen our family."

Davis faced the most important decision of his career: to prevent reinforcement at the Union’s Fort Sumter or to let it take place. He and his cabinet decided to demand that the Federal garrison surrender and, if this was refused, to use military force to prevent reinforcement before the fleet arrived. Anderson did not surrender. With Davis's endorsement, Beauregard began the bombarding of the fort in the early dawn of April 12, beginning hostilities between the North and the South.

When Virginia joined the Confederacy, Davis moved his government to Richmond in May 1861. Davis was elected to a full six-year term on Nov. 6, 1861, and was inaugurated on Feb. 22, 1862.

The birthday of Jefferson Davis is commemorated in several states as is the birthday of Robert E. Lee in 1973.

Finally, a movement arose to restore Jefferson Davis's U.S. citizenship. This was accomplished with the passing of the U.S. Senate Joint Resolution 16 on Oct. 17, 1978. In signing the law, President Jimmy Carter referred to this as the last act of reconciliation of the Civil War. Ironically, of all the recent protesting of Confederate memorials and statues, little ire has been inferred upon any of Jefferson Davis’ memorials.

Why You’ll See So Many Churches Meeting at the Beach This Time of Year

Head to the beach almost any Sunday afternoon between now and Labor Day and you’ll probably see a group of smiling people from one church or another.

What are they doing there?

Baptisms.

Baptism is the means by which Jesus asked His followers to publicly declare their faith in Him. His final words were “Go into all the world and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20).

“To baptize,” in the original language of the New Testament means “to plunge into.” The picture Jesus had in mind was that those who have trusted in Him would be lowered into the water like we will one day be lowered into a coffin. It’s a picture of burial, and then resurrection. It’s a way of saying, “I’m dying to myself and living now for Jesus.” Baptism is a symbol of receiving a brand new life.

The cool thing about being an ocean baptism is that Jesus said He was “the living water that gives eternal life.” Come witness a beach baptism and you’ll see people immersed in and resurrected from “living water”!

New Song’s Beach Baptism is Sunday, June 24, two blocks north of the pier. We’ll eat at noon and beginning baptizing people about 2 p.m. You are welcome to join us. Seeing all the smiling faces coming up out of the water will be something you’ll remember for a long, long time.

On Wednesday, April 11, the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO) honored the City of San Marcos with two top awards for outstanding communications projects.

CAPIO gave the City its highest honor—the Excellence in Public Information and Communications Award (EPIC Award)—for a recruitment video created to attract job candidates; and for its new city logo, which was part of citywide rebrand.

The City of San Marcos prides itself on finding innovate ways to raise the bar in public service—and informing and engaging the

community is certainly no exception. As one of the region’s fastest growing cities and North County’s education hub, San Marcos has a great story to tell—and these outreach efforts helped do that.

This video was created to attract new talent in a new, effective way. And according to the data, we have clearly achieved that. The video dovetailed with the City’s newly minted brand, which includes the City’s first logo— the other project that earned an EPIC Award.

A group of highly talented folks who like trains have built an extensive model railroad in Oceanside’s Heritage Village Park that depicts coastal rail operations in the 1950s. HO scale trains operate from San Diego to Oceanside where miniature versions of several historical buildings have been created including the Top Gun House, 101 Cafe, and Robert’s Cottages along The Strand.

From Oceanside the tracks head inland to Fallbrook, continue through rugged Temecula Canyon and finally arrive at their destination at Colton.

TRANSNET LOCAL STREET IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM OF PROJECTS

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on June 12, 2018 a public hearing will be held with respect to the City of San Marcos adopting projects in the 2018 Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP). San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG), as the Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Regional Transportation Planning Agency, is required by state and federal laws to develop and adopt a Regional Transportation Improvement Program (RTIP). The RTIP is a multi-billion dollar, multi-year program of proposed projects for major transportation projects in the San Diego Region.

Transportation projects funded with federal, state, TransNet, and the San Diego transportation sales tax program must be included in an approved RTIP. The RTIP covers five fiscal years and incrementally implements San Diego Forward: The Regional Plan, the longrange transportation plan for the San Diego region. The 2018 RTIP covers fiscal years 2019 through 2023.

The City of San Marcos recommends programming the 2018 RTIP projects as they are either regionally significant, capacity increasing projects or are projects that are being recommended for TransNet revenues.

All projects programmed with TransNet funds meet all the requirements of the TransNet Extension Ordinance and accommodate travel for pedestrians and bicyclists. NOTICE OF PETITION TO ADMINISTER ESTATE OF BERNARD GOMBERG Case No. 37-2018-00025599 PR-PW-CTL

To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate or both, of Bernard Gomberg. A Petition for Probate has been filed by Richard M. Gomberg in the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego, 1100 Union St., San Diego, Ca., 92101, Central Division. The Petition for Probate requests that Richard M. Gomberg be appointed as personal representatives to administer the estate of the decedent.
