Volume 49 - No. 25

By Tom Morrow

Air travel today often is less enjoyable and far more hectic than in “the old days.” Once upon a time there was an air carrier that had a reputation of being “the fun airline” – the “World’s Friendliest Airline” and, it was.

simply as “PSA,” operated from 1949 to 1988. In its early years it was an “intra-state” carrier – meaning all destination cities were within the state of California. Kenny Friedkin founded PSA in 1949, with a $1,000 monthly lease of one Douglas DC-3. This lone 1935-era two-engine plane made a weekly round-trip flight from San Diego to Oakland, with a stop-over in

Burbank. At first reservations were taken from San Diego by using a World War II surplus latrine, refitted as a ticket office. Friedkin was born in New York City during World War I. He and his parents moved to Kansas, and later San Diego, California. He got interested in aviation after he saw an air show in San Diego at the age of 8. Friedkin obtained his pilot

license at the age of 17. In 1945, he opened a flight school called the Plosser-Friedkin School (later named the Friedkin School of Aeronautics). The parent company to the school was Friedkin Aeronautics Inc. But, the school was not making enough profit, so he tried numerous business methods from aerial fish delivery to banner-towing with the help of his comrades J. Floyd Andrews

and Bill Shimp.

Friedkin tried to build a charter airline called Friedkin Airlines, which flew between San Diego and El Centro, but it was a failure. Using the lessons learned from that abortive attempt and receiving advice from a travel agent, Friedkin and his wife, Jean, created Pacific Southwest Airlines. The airline was a huge success, and gave Friedkin Aeronautics Inc. a profit.

In 1951, PSA began flying into San Francisco International Airport, and by 1955, the young airline had two Douglas DC-4, four-engine planes purchased from the long ago, almost forgotten Capital Airlines. The DC-4 was the stalwart aircraft carrying coal, food, clothing during the “Berlin Airlift” when the German city was cut off from the West by the Soviet Union.

PSA, ever the airline of innovation, painted black-lined boxes around the DC-4 windows to make the aircraft appear more like the newer, advanced

I, for one, am sick and tired of hearing about how dumb people are in the South, and I challenge any so-called "smart " Yankee to take this exam:

In January 1958, it scheduled 37 DC-4s a week Burbank to San Francisco (29 of which originated in San Diego) and four nonstop flights San Diego to San Francisco; the fare from Burbank to San Francisco was $9.99. United Airlines, Western Airlines and TWA at that time were operating a combined total of 241 nonstop flights each week from Los Angeles to San Francisco with 49 flights a week being operated from Burbank to San Francisco. About half of these flights operated by the competition were First Class only ($22.05); the rest carried coach passengers for $13.50 (all fares operated by interstate air carriers were subject to 10 percent federal tax.) Later in 1958 PSA shifted some flights from Burbank to Los Angeles International Airport; that year it carried 296,000 passengers. In late 1959 PSA began flying Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprops[5] configured with 92 seats and a six-seat lounge, replacing 70-seat DC-4s. Boeing 727-114s, Boeing 727214s, and Boeing 737-214s. is 470 per acre. The plot is 2.3 acres in size. The average tree diameter is 14 inches. How many Budweiser’s will be drunk before the trees are cut down?

When the porch collapses, how many dogs will be killed? 6. A man owns a Georgia house and 3.7 acres of land in a hollow with an average slope of 15%. The man has five children. Can each of his grown children place a mobile home on the man's land and still have enough property for their electric appliances to sit out front?

7. A 2-ton truck is overloaded and proceeding 900 yards down a steep slope on a secondary road at 45 MPH. The brakes fail. Given average traffic conditions on secondary roads, what is the probability that it will strike a vehicle with a muffler?

8. With a gene pool reduction of 7.5% per generation, how long will it take a town which has been bypassed by the Interstate to breed a country-western singer?

I betcha thought that this test was gonna be an easy one, didn't ya? It's okay if y'all didn't do all that well. Just goes to show ya there's a whole heap of things that big city book-learning don't prepare ya for in this life.

As an added bonus for taking the "RED NECK CHALLENGE", here's some southerly advice that may come in handy down the road a piece.... Next time you are too drunk to drive,

By the 1960s, PSA had grown into a fleet of Lockheed L-188 Electras on the San Diego-San Francisco route; later during that same decade the Electras were replaced with the faster and larger Boeing 727s and 737s. In 1962, Friedkin died at the age of 47 of a cerebral hemorrhage. His wife, Jean, died the following year. By the 1970s, PSA expanded its service to Sacramento, San Jose, Long Beach, and Ontario. By 1980, it was operating a hub at Los Angeles International Airport.

In 1966 through 1970, McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30s replaced the Electras. By May 1965, 103 Electras a week were flying from Los Angeles to San Francisco, 32 a week from Los Angeles to Oakland, 34 a week from Burbank to San Francisco and 5 a week from San Diego to San Francisco. En route flying time between Los Angeles and San Francisco was scheduled for 60 minutes while BurbankSan Francisco was 55 minutes. In 1966 PSA started flying to San Jose, and in 1967 to Sacramento Executive Airport;

walk to the nearest pizza shop and place an order. When they go to deliver it, catch a ride home with them. Now that’s smart! For some special friends of mine from Oklahoma: Add to this a comment overheard by an Oklahoma friend, who said the best thing about visiting Rome was seeing the Sixteenth Chapel.

Some years back, I saw an Oklahoma football player being interviewed by a sportscaster make this statement: “If it were not for football, I would not be playing football today”………. A Teacher’s Story . . .

by an Anonymous 2nd grade teacher.

I've been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back. When I was a kid, I loved show-andtell. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-andtell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and talk about it, they're welcome. Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater.

She holds up a snapshot of an infant. 'This is Luke, my baby brother, and I'm going to tell you about his birthday.'

later that year PSA and other airlines moved to the new Sacramento International Airport. Ontario was added in 1968 and Long Beach, Fresno and Stockton in 1971-72.

In the Los Angeles Times’ news section “Opinion L.A,” the newspaper called PSA "practically the unofficial flag carrier airline of California for almost 40 years,” was the first large discount airline in the United States. It was called "The World's Friendliest Airline.” Accordingly, the company painted a big smile on the nose of all its airplanes, dubbing them the “PSA Grinning Birds.”

Starting in 1974 PSA briefly operated several wide-body Lockheed L-1011 TriStar jetliners for two years before deeming them unprofitable and parking them. PSA's L-1011-1s were unique in having lower deck seating. The L-1011s flew intrastate routings of Los Angeles-San Francisco, Los Angeles-San Francisco-Sacramento and San The Smiling Airline Cont. on Page 3

She's standing there with her hands on the pillow, and I'm trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement. 'Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts going, 'Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!' Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. 'She walked around the house for, like an hour, 'Oh, oh, oh!' (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.)

'My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she doesn't have a sign on the car like the Domino's man. They got my Mom to lie down in bed like this.' (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.) 'And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like psshhheew!' (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming water flowing away. It was too much!) 'Then the middle wife starts saying 'push, push,' and 'breathe, breathe.

They started counting, but never even got past ten. Then, all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom's play-center, so there must be a lot of toys inside there. When he got out, the middle wife spanked him

PSA’s Lockheed Electra propjets returned in 1975 for flights in order to better-serve the somewhat short runway into Lake Tahoe with this service then being discontinued in 1979.

The Lake Tahoe Airport, located in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, did not allow scheduled airline jet operations until the 1980s although Pacific Air Lines briefly operated Boeing 727-100s into Lake Tahoe in 1966. PSA never again served Lake Tahoe after retiring its Electras.

Airline deregulation changed the playing field for the nation’s air carriers, especially for PSA. The San Diego-based airline changed from an “intrastate” carrier to an “interstate,” expanding its destinations to Reno, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Phoenix, Tucson, and Albuquerque. Later the route system was expanded even further to Portland, Bend, and

Medford, Oregon, and on north to Seattle and Bellingham, Washington. The intra-state strategy had avoided the steep costs from federal regulation. This business plan later served as the model for Texas-based Southwest Airlines, doing in the Lone Star State what PSA had done in California. Following the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978, PSA expanded to other destinations, eventually operated international service to Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta in Mexico.

An intense airfare war ensued among PSA, Air California, Western Airlines, and United Airlines, with no apparent winner. PSA began to expand beyond its reach with hotels and a number of other non-aviation ventures, overlooking “what brought ‘em to the dance,” that made the airline quite successful – that of serving the North American West.

With no apparent winner in the airfare war, Western Airlines merged with Delta, and AirCal was purchased by American Airlines. An hour after the AirCal-American merger was

announced, the coveting eyes at USAir agreed to purchase PSA. However, by 1988, the PSA flag and routes had disintegrated into USAir’s system; PSA’s San Diego repair and office facilities were abandoned with equipment and operations moved to USAir’s east coast hubs, thus erasing San Diego’s original “hometown airline” from the skies.

name to US Airways. In 2005, after its second bankruptcy filing, the Phoenix-based America West Airlines acquired US Airways, continuing with the AWA name until it merged with American Airlines in 2013, making the latter giant carrier the world’s largest. It was as if PSA had never existed. But it did and in this hectic day of air travel, PSA has been sorely missed ever since.

In 1986, PSA’s expanded into USAir. That Pittsburgh-based air carrier wanted the lucrative California routes. The Eastern carrier set about buying San Diego’s airline. In 1986, PSA became the first of two airlines that were bought, or merged, into what was then USAir, followed by Piedmont Airlines in 1987. It was the beginning of a series of take-over musical chairs that ended up being one giant carrier. By some observers, the purchase of PSA by USAir was a result of “overreach. The airline was involved in too competitive markets beyond California and no doubt helped lead to the airlines’ demise. The PSA acquisition by USAir was completed in 1988. In 1997, the airline changed its

With the merging of PSA into USAir, the 1980s and ‘90s those two decades became an era of musical chairs in the sky. While it appeared PSA was gone, in a way it continued. In November 1995, the PSA name was given by US Airway to Jetstream International Airlines, reportedly a one-plane operation that seldom flew. The “new” PSA Airlines came into existence so that US Airways could “preserve” the once proud PSA trademark it had purchased. US Airways had acquired Jetstream International in 1987, when it was a subsidiary of Piedmont Airlines. PSA Still Exists

Absolutely LOVED the experience - particularly the Amtrak train ride up and back.

Amtrak gets high marks for being a delight to work with. Their automated reservation system works like a charm. We had occasion to talk to a real live human being and she was so helpful I've decided I want to adopt her.

Man About Town

Time was when a ride on a train meant a constant sound of 'clicketyclack, clickety, clack . . " No more.

Today, when you board an Amtrak you hear, at most, a quiet whisper of 'whoosh.' And the train moves out smartly, on time, and offers air conditioned comfort.

We decided to take a break from the daily humdrum of life . . . and from the pressures of answering phones, (many of which are those accursed 'robo-calls' - of making phone calls, of making sales calls, of writing, of planning, of dealing with a half dozen issues. It was just time to getaway for a bit. So we called Amtrak and booked a round trip from Oceanside to San

We made the reservations and received the boarding passes via email. We boarded Amtrak in Oceanside at 10:40am.

Piece of cake. Parking (free) adjacent to the depot. Train was on time, whisper quiet upon arrival and upon departure. Window seats with views of the ocean going up and coming back.

It seemed like about a minute and we were already at San Clemente! Another minute and we were in San Juan Capistrano. In fact, we had been visiting with a young lady who had to remind us . . ."you'd better get moving. This is your stop." She was right. We were there already! 11:15am! 35 minutes! No traffic jams, no delays, friendly passengers with which to visit, lovely views. I had almost booked business class but then thought . . . "wait a minute.

(760) 747-7119 Business class? For a 35 minute ride? That doesn't make sense. We'll go coach." I enjoyed the trip so much I'd like to do it again, only this time maybe to Santa Barbara (where we used to live) or to San Luis Obispo. On a longer trip I'll book business class, put on my 'uppity clothes' (which means long pants (maybe) instead of my traditional tennis or walking shorts). Bloody Mary's, Wine, Beer, sandwiches, all the comforts of the good life. And, of course, the beautiful scenery en route up and back.

Let me urge anyone who lives in the San Diego County area to seriously consider a day trip to San Juan Capistrano. Relaxing, lots of lovely, small, quaint shops, restaurants, a variety of entertainments all close in. And lots of nice, friendly people to chat with, some of whom were tourists, many of whom were locals. All of whom were helpful.

Upon arrival we walked across the tracks into the Los Rios District, the oldest neighborhood in America. The "Old Town" of the city. Colorful, original district homes and businesses with original adobe buildings and a great history! We had a cup of coffee at the Hidden House Coffee House . . . then grabbed lunch at a historic, small, very rustic building which housed The Hummingbird House Cafe, owned by a Bulgarian family and which offers delicious food at very fair prices. We opted for the

We ate in a lovely shaded patio area, with a view of the passing tourists and of much of the historic Los Rios district. The Hummingbird House Cafe building is 140 years old! Solid construction with simple vertical clapboard exterior, shake shingle roof, and lots of weathered wood throughout the area - all giving a great patina, consistent with a historic district. A good friend had recommended the Ramos House Cafe but we had eaten breakfast before we left and weren't all that hungry; add in the fact the the Ramos House is a pricey joint and we decided to pass. I don't mind paying good money for good food and service but I also don't like to spend money needlessly on a pricey cafe when I'm not all that hungry. Today, PSA lives on flying as a feeder airline for the “American Eagle” flag. In November 1995, USAir had renamed Jetstream International Airlines to PSA Airlines to protect the trademark of “Pacific Southwest Airlines.” The “new” PSA also moved its corporate headquarters to Vandalia, Ohio. By March 1996, the airline had transitioned to a fleet of Dornier 328 aircraft. In February 1997, USAir changed its name to US Airways and PSA began operating under the US Airways Express brand.

Today, PSA Airlines is an American Airlines regional carrier headquartered at Dayton International Airport flying under the American Eagle brand for American Airlines. PSA is a wholly owned subsidiary of American Airlines Group. The new PSA Airlines operates an all-jet fleet consisting exclusively of Canadian-built Bombardier regional jet aircraft. With a little luck and some much-needed financing, there is yet another local airline that could be in the skies above San Diego sometime in the coming months. Back in 1978, North County entrepreneur Ted Vallas purchased an East Coast-based American Inter-Island Airlines from parent company American Airlines, which operated throughout the Virgin Islands and other Caribbean islands. After two years, Vallas moved the air carrier’s St. Croix repair and office facilities as well as the fleet of Convair aircraft to San Diego, merging it Chuckles Cont. from Page 2

I'm sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it's Show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another 'Middle Wife' comes along. Little Thelma's Valentine...

Little Thelma came home from first grade and told her father that they had learned about the history of Valentine's Day. And, "Since Valentine's Day is for a Christian saint and we're Jewish," she asked, "will God get mad at me for giving someone a valentine?" Thelma's father thought a bit then said "No, I don't think God would get mad. Who do you want to give a valentine to?" "The ISIS terrorists," she said.

"Why the ISIS terrorists?" her father asked in shock.

"Well," she said, "I thought that if a little American Jewish girl could have enough love to give the terrorists a valentine, they might start to think that maybe we're not all bad, and maybe start loving people a little bit.

And if other kids saw what I did and then they sent valentines to the terrorists, they'd love everyone a lot. And then they'd start going all over the place telling everyone how much they loved us and how they didn't hate anyone anymore."

into Air Resorts Airline.

Beginning in 1980, and the next 17 years Air Resorts operated as a scheduled air carrier from San Diego International Lindbergh Field with a perfect safety record. But, due to rising costs and competition, Vallas shutdown and discontinued operations in 1997.

“Back in 1980, I wanted to operate Air Resort flights from Carlsbad’s Palomar Airport, but things weren’t right for that facility because of a heavy schedule of private business jet training at that airport, so we flew our operations from San Diego International Lindbergh Field.” By 1985, the transplanted Air Resorts airline was flying to Santa Barbara, Burbank, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, Cabo San Lucas, and Tucson. The airline’s 14 Convair 440 planes flew regularly scheduled routes as well as a number of charter flights for the Navy and various college athletic teams.

Because of a series of business setbacks Air Resorts ceased operation out of San Diego International, but Vallas hasn’t

Though skeptical of the idea, her father's heart swelled and he looked at his daughter with new found pride. "Thelma, that's the most wonderful thing I've ever heard."

"I know," Thelma said, "and once that gets them out in the open, the Marines could blow the crap out of them!" ••••• Being an adult is pretty easy. You just feel tired all the time and then you tell people how tired you are all the time and they tell you how tired they are. ••••• The middle-aged couple had finally learned how to send and receive texts on their cell phones. The wife, being a romantic at heart, decided one day that she'd send her husband a text while she was out of the house having coffee with a friend. She texted:

If you are sleeping, send me your dreams. If you are laughing, send me your smile. If you are eating, send me a bite. If you are drinking, send me a sip. If you are crying, send me your tears. I love you. The husband, being a no-nonsense sort of guy, texted back: I'm on the toilet. Please advise.

given up on a “resurrection.” He may be on the verge of creating a new carrier flying under the trademark of California Pacific Airlines based at North County’s Palomar Airport in Carlsbad.

“I always admired the way PSA operated their early operations before they tried to go beyond California,” Vallas said. “Back then PSA really did put the smile into flying. If and when we get into full operation here at California Pacific Airlines, we want to put that PSA smile back into today’s air travel experience.” But those painted-on “smiles” of PSA won’t be on any CPAir planes as USAir/USAirways cleverly trademarked them. After a number of abortive attempts and business setbacks over the past few months, Vallas is confident CPAir will finally get off the ground sometime within the next few months.

“Reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated,” Vallas said, stealing a famous The Smiling Airline Cont. on Page 6

The prospects of any future home-based airlines for San Diego County are limited, at best. Carlsbad’s Palomar Airport could handle no more than two scheduled airlines and that might be too many. The only facilities that would be left in the county are: Otay Mesa on the Mexican border adjacent to Tijuana International, and Gillespie Field in El Cajon. San Diego’s Lindbergh Field is at capacity. It is one of the few major airports in the nation operating with only a single runway. Heavy airliners like the Boeing 747 can’t take off from Lindbergh with a full fuel load due to the runway’s limited length (9,400 feet). At one time in recent years, British Air operated an international flight schedule from Lindbergh Field to London, but on the round trip returning to England, their Boeing 747s had to land in Phoenix to take on a full-load of fuel before starting the long, 12-hour flight to London. A full-load of fuel from San Diego is said to make a 747 too heavy to lift from Lindbergh’s single runway. The newer, more efficient Boeing 777 however has altered that problem.

Because of its “single” runway, requiring planes to fly low over the city’s skyline, San Diego International has been dubbed in some aviation circles as one of the 10 most dangerous airports in the world. However, one airline pilot explained San Diego actually is one of the safest because pilots are all too aware of the hazards flying “tree-top” over the city’s skyline. “There’s no such thing as a ‘routine’ landing at Lindbergh,” he said.

Down through the years with all of Pacific Southwest Airlines ala USAir ala US Airlines ala Jetstream International ala American Airlines’ musical chairs, with an occasional bankruptcy filings and management, the moniker ‘PSA” flying under the American Eagle trademark has little meaning to San Diego County. Today, go to any of the Eastern states where PSA flies the American Eagle banner and you won’t find too many who will know what “PSA” stands for … and, it’s doubtful anyone will know those letters were once emblazoned on a smoothrunning, inexpensive and easily

accessible air carrier that heralded the proud trademark of a great California airline.

In 2015, PSA’s legendary founder Kenny Friedkin was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame at the San Diego Air & Space Museum. The popular airline he started remains in the hearts of those of us who can recall making those quick trips up and down our coast on PSA’s “Grinning Birds.” Alas, PSA, we knew ye when.

Historic Status for Betty Crocker House - A 136-year-old Victorian home in Valley Center known as the Betty Crocker House is the latest local landmark to be identified as a Site of Historic Interest by the Valley Center Historical Society. The home has had several owners during the past century, but its most famous occupant was Agnes White, the original Betty Crocker. Although she cooked, created recipes and appeared on network radio, her status locally as a cooking icon was not generally known until after her death in 1979 at age 84. She is buried at Valley Center Cemetery. Built in 1883, the Miller Road home is historically known as the Clark House after physician James Harrison Clark. During his ownership, Dr. Clark made his home available for every social gathering, visiting dignitary, and soiree in the small town. In 1941, Agnes White and her husband, William Tizard, purchased the home, added electricity and indoor plumbing, and built a stainless steel demonstration kitchen where she prepared recipes and worked as nutrition consultant. Years earlier, while working for the company known today as General Mills, owner of the Betty Crocker trademark, she was selected to host "The Betty Crocker Cooking School the Air" on NBC, the country's first cooking show. The Valley Center History Museum has the only known recording of a 1936 broadcast

Low-Altitude Bombing Was At High Risk

We lost another veteran of “The Greatest Generation a few days ago – he was my neighbor, Rod Braswell of Oceanside, World War II pilot.

because of the commotion. But, he didn’t.

While flying bombing missions mostly out of Italy, Rod did something very few pilots accomplished – he flew 50 successful missions losing only one crewmember.

“You fly fifty missions and they let you go home,” he told me a few years ago in a television interview. “You fly forty-nine and get scared and can’t fly number fifty, they don’t let you go home.”

Rod said he and his crew got hit by shrapnel and bullets a “helluva” lot. He and his crew went through three B-24s. The most dangerous target he and his bomber group flew over were the oil fields of Ploesti, Romania. He made three bombing runs, which he said were enough for him. Those runs were especially dangerous because of the required “low-altitude” bombing. “At first we didn’t have a fighter escort to protect us. We went on those missions by ourselves,” Rod recalled. “The German fighters took out a lot of us. Eventually we got fighter escorts, including members of the (famed) Tuskegee Squadron.” Still, of the 177 B-24s assigned to Rod’s bomber group, some 53 planes didn’t return. Those Ploesti raids resulted in the group’s heaviest aircraft losses.

Rod lived to see most of the 20th century and a good portion of the first part of this century. He died after a long illness at the age of 98, on May 17, 2019. Raised as an “Army Brat” in a career military family, Rod went to a number of base schools where his Dad was stationed. He attended school in the Panama Canal Zone and graduated in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, outside of Washington, D.C.

Rod attended Virginia Tech for two years before entering the U.S. Army in 1942, as a pilot in training. He was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant and assigned to a “Liberator” B-24 bomber, the largest of the nation’s military aircraft during the European war.

(As a side-note, hundreds of B-24s were built at various plants across the nation, as well as here in San Diego). In 1943, Rod and his crew picked up a new plane at the Ford factory in Detroit).

The trip to the European side of the war was certainly not direct. The route took Rod and his crew south from the U.S. to the island of Trinidad near South America. From there, they flew east across the Atlantic to Morocco in Africa and on to Italy. The distance between South America and Africa is shorter than flying directly from the U.S., hence refueling wasn’t an issue.

“The trip wasn’t uneventful,” Rod said, chuckling. “While in Trinidad, one of the guys on the crew bought a monkey. While flying over the Atlantic to Morocco the monkey got loose and started running all around the cockpit. It caused quite a stir.”

Rod said at one point he almost threw the animal out the window

“Number fifty turned out to be my most harrowing,” Rod told me. “My nose gunner was killed. An anti-aircraft shell went through the seat of his chair and exploded. My navigator lost an eye.” Rod received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his outstanding war record, but Flying those high-altitude bombing runs were bitter cold.

“Let me tell you how uncomfortable it was. I had to wear a lot of clothes to keep warm, so it was hard to move. I had to wear an oxygen mask and when I exhaled, the moisture from my breath froze and I got icicles on my neck.” He also spoke of a rather unusual piece of headgear, which those World War II films from Hollywood never showed.

“I had to wear a steel helmet that crushed my ears – there were no pilot’s helmets in those days, so they gave me a (British) doughboy’s steel helmet,” he said. “I got a flak suit that had all the metal and canvas in the front, but nothing in the back, so all the weight was on the front and was cutting my neck, he recalled. “It was freezing cold – and people were shooting at me.” After the war, Rod returned to civilian life, finished college and began his own civil engineering and contracting business. He eventually semi-retired to a small farm of 400 avocado trees near Fallbrook, then fully retiring to Oceanside about 20 years ago.

Up until his final months, Rod kept in contact with fellow WWII veterans each Wednesday morning at the “Old Bold Pilots” breakfasts in Oceanside. Alas, that weekly gathering of eagles gets smaller with each meeting. Thanks, Rod Braswell, for your service and devotion to country.

A Baseball Card Thrown Away

Many of us baby boomers grew up collecting baseball cards and comics. After a while, most of us stopped collecting. It was a good opportunity for moms to throw away the cards and comics. However, some moms (including mine) held on to them. Growing up in St. Louis, my family followed the hometeam St. Louis Cardinals baseball team. They were loaded with all-stars, such as Stan Musial, Lou Brock, Ken Boyer, and my favorite, Bob Gibson.

My mother did not want me to be upset with her, so she kept my baseball cards. I am appreciative to this day.

But most kids were not so fortunate. Their cards were tossed away by the time they finished high school. The cards were never going to be worth anything. Right? Now with baseball in full swing, let me tell you a story of a card that was thrown away. It turned out to be a home run for an unsuspecting lady. I would even say it was a grand slam for her.

Bernice Gallego and her husband Al owned a shop called Collectique in Fresno, California. Bernice and Al would go around the Fresno area acquiring items from estate sales. They would look in the attics and cellars, and take with them anything that looked decent enough to sell at their shop. Keep in mind that Bernice is not a baseball fan. She knew the name Willie Mays but not many others. In the summer of 2008, the Gallegos were looking over what they had brought back to the store. She pulled out a card from a box.

be any actual bids on the card. He suggested that she first find out what the card was worth. She took his advice. Wise decision. King Solomon would have been proud.

As the Gallegos were soon to find out, they were in possession of probably the oldest baseball card in history. The card was an advertisement from 1869 with a picture of the first professional baseball team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings.

That 1869 Cincinnati team was undefeated. It was estimated that they won 65 games that year, with one tie against the Troy Haymakers. That year a card was issued as an advertisement for Peck & Snyder, a New York manufacturer. The company made sports and firefighting equipment. Bernice and Al then drove to the PSA headquarters near Los Angeles to get the card authenticated.

Bernice remembered not caring too much about players in an actual game. The history of the game was what was important. The 1869 Red Stockings were unbeatable. In 1870 the Red Stockings were almost as invincible. They won 27 more consecutive games before losing to the Brooklyn Athletics. The Gallegos cannot remember when and where they exactly got the card. However, they do remember putting it on auction.

By the way, the card that Bernice Gallego nearly overlooked went for $64,000. Not too bad for a person who had never been to a baseball game in her life. Not too bad at all.

They looked at the wording of the card, “Red Stocking B.B. Club of Cincinnati”. It was a photo of ten men with their socks pulled up to their knees. The card was dirty and wrinkled. She knew it was old.

Bernice figured it was worth selling on eBay. She took a picture of the card, wrote a description, and put it up for auction. She priced it at ten dollars rather than fifteen, because it would have cost an additional twenty cents to price it at fifteen. That same night that she posted the card on eBay she was surprised to get a few inquiries. Someone wanted to know if it was authentic. Another person wanted to buy it immediately. Bernice thought to herself that the card might be worth more than the ten dollars she was selling it for. It could possibly be worth fifty dollars, or even more.

Bernice picked up her phone that night and called a friend, George Huddleston, who advised her to pull it from the auction. There had yet to

and we grew. Spiritually, scripture reminds us we can do ALL things through Christ who gives us the strength. In the book entitled “Do Hard Things” by Alex and Brett Harris, five kinds of hard things are listed:

Pastor Sam Brumit Mission 316, San Marcos Do Hard Things

Ever have to do something that was really hard? Sometimes God calls us to do something difficult. Don’t shy away from everything that is hard. Sometimes it’s where the growth lies.

Most of us like the path of least resistance. Easy ways are…easy, but not always the pathway to the most spiritual growth. Elisabeth Elliot once said “What we call “struggling” is often delayed obedience.” Sometimes life is hard. It can be difficult, overwhelming or just plain aggregating. This life of faith we are called to is about recognizing when we are weak, He is strong.

As children, we often told our parents “This is too hard”. They stretched us

1. Things that are outside your comfort zone. 2. Things that go beyond what is expected or required. 3. Things that are too big to accomplish alone. 4. Things that don’t earn an immediate profit. 5. Things that challenge the cultural norm. Doing hard things can pay rich dividends. Ever think about:

• Reading books when it’s easier to watch Netflix. • Overcoming your fear of speaking and giving a testimony. • Sticking with a marriage that is difficult. • Saving money rather than spending everything you make. • Sticking with something when it’s easier to walk away. • Finishing a job when everything inside you wants to quit. • Obeying God when He asks you to do something you don’t want to do What are you facing today that his hard? How is God showing you can do all things?

Defensible space inspections help keep homeowners safe in San Marcos

In the last year, the San Marcos Fire Department (SMFD) conducted hundreds of defensible space inspections of properties located in the city’s highest wildfire risk areas, as determined by the Community Wildfire Protection Plan. San Marcos is no stranger to wildfire and it is up to all of us to help keep ourselves, our property and the community safe. During the free defensible space audits, recommendations on how to improve or maintain defensible space are provided to the homeowner using a checklist and photos based on an inspection of the property. Creating defensible space is critical for a home’s chance for surviving a wildfire and reduces risk to our firefighters responding.

Now is the time for all San Marcos homeowners to do their part to protect your family and property from the threat of wildfire. For more information, visit www.san-marcos.net/wildfiresafety or call the San Marcos Fire Department at (760) 744-1050, ext. 3410.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido!

As part of the budget passing discussion last week, we set aside some money for a city-wide survey. Since the details of the survey are not yet determined, I would like to get your input on what you would like to know about.

How does the city feel about something? As some examples and as some of you know, there is discussion about putting in an aquatics center, and there is also discussion about expanding Grape Day park with a new library, and there is even talk about removing the concrete from the Escondido creek and turning it into a 9 mile “river” park. All are interesting and valid ideas but they also cost money.

So as somewhat of a follow up to last week, please ask yourself what are our community values, meaning where should we put our money. A real highlight of this week was the Chamber of Commerce Annual Installation and Awards dinner. At it I had the privilege to swear in the new members. Thank you. Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. Keeping Kids Safe

Pools, lakes, and beaches mean summer fun and cool relief from hot weather. However, water can also be dangerous for kids if proper precautions are not taken.

The Vista Fire Department recommends that adult supervision is present at all times and someone is present at all times when children are around the water. The good news is there are many ways to keep your kids safe in or around water. Enrolling kids in swim lessons and learning CPR are proactive steps to keeping a child safe. Other safety tips include keeping a first aid kit poolside and removing objects such as toys that could entice a child into the pool area. Removing lawn chairs/furniture, so that a child cannot use it to climb into a fenced pool area is another safety tip. If you would like more information on keeping your child safe around water please contact Vista Fire at 760.643.2801. Water play can be a great source of fun and exercise and you'll enjoy the water experience more by knowing and practicing these safety precautions.

How the Internet continues to change our culture. Part I of ?

Today we lay the foundation for further discussion on the ways the Internet is affecting pretty much everything. Those over forty have witnessed unprecedented changes in the way we live. Perhaps we don’t stop to give it much thought, but there are profound differences in the way we conduct our lives today and the way our parents lived. While acknowledging that technology has improved our lives in countless ways, there is a compelling nostalgia for the old ways. There is a lingering sense that folks used to be friendlier, more honest and that life

Or my husband's interference with Loretta Lynch & the investigation?

Or when I happily accepted the stolen debate questions given to me by CNN?

Or my own secret server in my house and my disdain for classified information?

Those under forty don’t have a sense of how drastically technology has changed modern life. They accept the constant change of rapidly evolving technology as part of their culture. They feel no sense of loss or nostalgia for the way things were because they never experienced it. There is a tendency to value the way things are today and discount the nostalgic musings of the elders as a natural consequence of aging.

This technology driven “generations gap” has been in hyper-drive since the mid 1990s when we opened The Computer Factory. In 1995 nearly everyone had some experience with PCs through work or school but only thirty percent of homes had a PC. The Internet was a series of Geeky bulletin boards connected by phone or dial-up modems. Sixty five percent of Americans either had never heard of the Internet or did not know what it was and fewer than ten percent of home PCs had Internet access. By 2000 (Y2K), fifty one percent of households had computers and forty two percent had an Internet connection. By 2010, seventy five percent of homes had at least one PC (notebook or desktop), nearly all with Internet access. Internet use in the USA stabilized at around 220 Or deleting 30,000 emails after I was told not to? Or having my cell phones and computers destroyed with hammers and Bleach-bit?

million users, (seventy percent 70% of the population) between 2007 through 2011. It began to accelerate with the popularity of Apple and Android “smart phones” reaching 290 million American Internet users by 2019 or nearly ninety percent of the population.

Since 2017 about forty percent of Internet traffic has originated from mobile devices (smart phones and tablets). The other sixty percent from desktop and notebook PCs. There are significant differences in the age demographics of Internet users. A much higher percentage of the younger demographic (Millennial and” Z” generations, between 7 and 37) than “post Millennials” (over 37) are likely to use the Internet. These different age groups also have and have vastly different “apps” and user patterns.

In mobile and PC applications, the post-Millennials tend to employ the Internet as a newer and better way to perform familiar tasks. Millennial/X gen users on the other hand, enthusiastically find or invent new and different ways to use the ever advancing technology. The younger generations drive the constant changes in “apps” that drive older users crazy. Next week we’ll continue this discussion on how technology is changing us.

Peek-a-boo underwear isn't as sexy if the reason it's see-through is because it's really old.

Once watched a woman buy: Gas-X, lice shampoo and birth control. I speak for the world when I say: I hope they all worked I'm so old: I remember when fame was synonymous with talent.

If white supremacists love their skin color so much, why do they cover themselves with tattoos? I'm going to learn how to say "I know what you're saying" in Vietnamese before I go back to that nail salon for my next pedicure.

When a man makes an hourglass shape with his hands to represent a woman, I assume he has never seen a woman.

Trust me you want 'heels over head' in love. 'Head over heels' in love is just, like... standing. I must have an amazing butt because every time I finish talking to somene and walk away I overhear them saying, “What an ass!”
