Fourth of July is just around the corner and that means spectacular firework displays around the country as well as 84-million Americans enjoying barbecues, all in the spirit of observing our country’s birthday!

Did you know that more hot dogs are consumed during 4th of July than at any other time of the year?

if every hot dog eaten during the 4th of July were laid end-to-end, they would extend from Escondido to New York City, not just once – but 5 times over!

While Americans eat far more hamburgers per year (50-billion annually) than hot dogs (20 billion per year), that statistic changes with hot dogs being more popular over 4th of July than hamburgers! That is why July is officially designated as “National Hot Dog Month.”

Make no mistake, fried chicken is one of the most popular foods during the 4th of July, but even fried chicken and hot dogs take a back seat to beer! Nielsen Consumer Company and the National Retail Federation, over 68.3 million cases of beer are sold over 4th of July! That means about $1-billion of the bubbly suds is con-

sumed!

Our country turns 242-years-old this July 4, 2018, and it would take an enormous birthday cake to feed everyone! The mountain-sized birthday cake would have to have enough slices to feed over 326 million Americans! But it would be well worth it. After all, our Mother Country still looks grand at 242 years, still a youngster compared to other countries around this Blue Marble.

gather around family and friends and enjoy a hearty spread of delicious fare that runs the gamut from hot dogs to hamburgers, ribs to chicken, potato salad to coleslaw, and all gastronomical delights inbetween. Yup, no one celebrates and parties like we do, the children of Uncle Sam, and we’re high-stepping proud of that fact.

Well, now that it’s America’s birthday celebration, let’s continue the party spirit and have fun with some amazing facts about our great country.

Technically speaking, 8 of our early U. S. Presidents were not born in the United States because they were born (before) the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and, therefore, were officially born in the British colonies at the time! While it is true that all of our U. S. Presidents were Americans when sworn into presidential office, with George Washington our first U. S.

Oceanside Independence Parade Will Feature Largest Active and Veteran Groups Ever – On Saturday, June 30th, at 10am, the 24th Annual Oceanside Independence Parade will start on South Coast Highway from Wisconsin Avenue and travel north to Civic Center Drive. It will have a great Military lineup featuring many active and veteran groups. More than 120 parade entries are expected to march, roll, walk, and drive down historic Highway 101.

Our independence is a tribute to our fallen, those that served and current active military members. The parade will kick off with the 1st Marine Division Band to set the stage for the community-driven parade, and will also feature the 1st Marine Division Color Guard, 1st Marine Division Marching Unit and 1st Medical Battalion. Other military branches will also be involved such as Assault Craft Unit – FIVE (ACU-), Navy Band Southwest and the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton.

Senior Anglers Host Captain Ryan Block - The Oceanside Senior Anglers’ July 3rd meeting will host Captain Ryan Block.

Several of our club members have fished with Captain Block in past years on a various boats. We are glad to see he has now started his own charter service (Savvy Sportfishing) on a new boat. Captain Block’s addiction to fishing began at a young age. He became a Captain at 22 years old and ran such boats as the Electra, Sea Trek, Advance, Fish Taxi, and the Pacific Voyager for the last 11 years.

Last winter he purchased a 48’ Uniflite and will be running his own charter operation, Savvy Sportfishing, starting this summer.

This will be one of the biggest and most comfortable 6 pack boats in San Diego. He’ll be speaking to the club about this new business, trips offered, and the upcoming fishing season.

Of all the exotic pets kept at the U. S. White House down through the years, none compared to the pet alligators that belonged to President John Quincy Adams and President Herbert Hoover!

Starting with early U. S. President John Quincy Adams, the alligator was an unusual gift to the sitting president from a French general.

Adams rather enjoyed the startled reactions to his pet alligator and continued showing-off his exotic reptile to disbelieving guests at the White House! The fierce-looking alligator was, initially, kept in the White House’s unfinished East Room and its nearby bathtub.

The scary intruder was eventually relocated to a different home.

Not to be outdone by the John Quincy Adams administration, a hundred years later, President Herbert Hoover would come to possess not one, but, two pet alligators, both of which were sometimes allowed inside the White House in the early 1930s!

The two alligators actually belonged to Hoover’s younger son, Allan, who frequently presented them to terrified guests!

Brian also received the Easter Seals California Assembly Champion Award for his work with the developmentally disabled community. A graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, and California School of Law, Brian also teaches a course on election law at USD School of Law. His proudest accomplishments are his two daughters, Taylin and Brenna.

Former military general, Ulysses S. Grant, prided himself on riding a military mount and his expertise on handling any horse under reins. Grant particularly enjoyed a fast steed and the exhilaration of giving his horse full throttle! According to official police records at Washington, D. C., Ulysses S. Grant was cited multiple times for recklessly riding a horse, as well as horse carriage, before and during his U. S. presidency! In a 2012 newspaper interview, Washington, D. C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier confirmed the story.

Oceanside has agreed to license two delivery-only dispensaries for medical marijuana following the city’s medical marijuana ordinance which passed in April.

Presently, Oceanside allows two licensed medical marijuana delivery services from outside the city for patients with prescriptions.

The ordinance approved earlier this year allows the cultivation, testing, manufacture and other aspects of the cannabis industry,

Supporters of medical marijuana/cannabis oil talk about the need to give ailing seniors the safe and natural medicine they need. Many users say cannabis oil relieves pain far more quickly and safely than the many opioid on the market.

Meanwhile, the city of Vista approved initiatives for the city ballot that would allow medical marijuana retailers and testing laboratories, and levy taxes on those businesses.

The City Marijuana Business Initiative would permit up to three

retailers to sell medical marijuana.

It wouldn’t allow storefront sales, but would permit those retailers to sell through delivery only. The initiative would also allow two marijuana testing laboratories to operate in Vista.

The council also approved a separate ballot measure, the City Marijuana Tax Initiative, which would place a 5 percent business tax on marijuana sales and production. Each of the three potential pot delivery dealers would generate about $84,000 per year in taxes, the city estimated.

Vista is one of several North County cities that specifically prohibits marijuana sales, but the ballot measures would reverse that. The dueling initiatives come as the city has moved aggressively to rid itself of unlicensed pot dispensaries.

The city of Escondido has turned a deaf ear to all proposals to provide for any form of medical marijuana dispensaries in that city. A strongly conservative council majority seems determined to maintain that stance.

Recently, several things happened . . . profound to me and you . . . fairly commonplace to him.

There's this guy . . . let's call him Jim . . . who has dedicated his life to taking care of all veterans, regardless of which branch in which they served.

Most of the veterans he services are those who are homeless, who are in need, who are down on their luck . . . and he recognizes that about 20% of all the homeless will never be anything but that . . . homeless. Still, he helps them all . . . sober, drunk, high, straight, gay . . . if they're a veteran and needs help, he's there, night and day.

It's not all strawberries and roses either . . . he's had veterans he was trying to help kick him, stomp on his feet, hit him, beat him up, vomit on him . . . and he keeps coming back to help them.

He works the streets . . . he works the streets you and I would not like-

In one case a friend of his asked him to come by and to bring a six pack. He agreed. When he entered his friend's apartment he found him on the floor with a needle still in his arm. He had injected a mixture of heroin and fentanyl. That fentanyl is bad stuff. It can, and does, kill within five seconds. It is becoming a major part of the opioide epidemic and it is flooding across the border and/or being manufactured in garage chemistry labs here in Southern California . . . in some cases even being mixed with battery acid.

And people are putting this stuff in their bodies.

Jim also sees things on the street that sickens him. Kids, ages 10, 12, 14, selling themselves on street corners - for money for food, for drugs, for their family.

Jim has another friend . . . a big mirror image of a Hell's Angel . . . leather jacket, no shirt . . . just bare chest and muscle. This guy sees a car stopped at a curb with the driver chatting up adolescent kids, seeking sex for money.

This guy has a great big 10' steel bar.

He runs up, slams the steel bar into the rear window of the car.

You can hear and smell the rubber burning for a full half minute as those cars beat it out of the area.

Happens all too often.

Most recently, Jim was working the streets, looking for veterans that needed help when he heard a woman whimpering and crying. She was next to a dumpster with her two children, both not yet old enough to attend school.

Her husband had beat the hell out of her and then kicked her and the two kids out of the house. She was seeking refuge at the dumpster . . . and here were two grinning thugs approaching her, one with his pants down around his ankles, saying things like . . . "gonna give you some sugar, momma . . . " Jim scurried back to his car and grabbed a baseball bat. He rushed to the two thugs and he took a mighty swing and nailed the worst of the two thugs right up alongside the head. He hit him so hard he permanently disfigured the guys face. The other thug decided he had other places he should be and left. Quickly.

The police had responded and Jim spent the night in jail . . . but once all the facts were sorted out, he was released. Thing is, Jim would do it all over again.

I intentionally do not give Jim's real name . . . reason? Some of the things Jim has to do are not entirely legal. But things that have to be done. And some are things that, when done, are the only way to get the message across. Clearly.

Like laying a baseball bat forcefully against the head of a no-account creep.

Why does Jim do things like this?

A squad of Marines came to rescue him when he was in a rice paddy in Vietnam. Of that squad of Marines, nine Marines died . . . giving their lives so Jim, a Navy pilot, and his crew, might survive. Jim and his crew did survive, helicoptered out, thanks to those brave Marines . . . but Jim never forgot the sacrifice of those nine Marines.

That's why he's dedicated his life to veterans.

That's why he works the mean streets.

Jim is a man's man and I'm proud to know him.

We need a few more Jims in the world.

In my case it was a second marriage for both of us and it came with three kids for starters. So I yielded to emotion and bought her dream car----a 1956 Ford T-Bird. Picture this, three kids and bags of groceries in a two passenger car. It didn’t work, but the marriage did.

Back when bigger was better, this glitzy sleek coupe was the advent of the wide track cars. Kids & the Great Outdoors

Electronic devices and virtual reality can be great, but there’s nothing like experiencing nature first hand. Unfortunately, many youth living in inner cities and underserved communities never have the opportunity to really experience the outdoors. The benefits of recreating are many, including healthy exercise, learning about nature, acquiring new skills and making friends. To help make that happen, I voted in favor of Assembly Bill 2614, introduced by Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo (D – Los Angeles), when it passed the Assembly on May 31st.

The bill requires the Natural Resources Agency to compile a list of schools that can contract with non-profit organizations to provide transportation services.

By allowing school busses that go unused on weekends or during vacation periods to provide transportation services for youth, better utilization of public resources will be encouraged. For many kids, shutting off the video game or the iPhone to go take a hike or go to the beach, camp or go fishing will open up possibilities and life

experiences that were never dreamed of.

AB 2614 is supported by the California Parks and Recreation Society, California Outdoor Recreation Partners, the Trust for Public Land, Outdoor Afro, Westfield State University and many other groups. I’m happy to report the bill has wide bi-partisan support and has now been forwarded to the Senate, where hearings are pending in the Natural Resources and Water Committee.

With over 280 parks covering about 1.4 million acres in the State Parks System, including Palomar Mountain and Anza Borrego State Parks, we have ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Our parks belong to all of us – let’s help make sure our kids get to use them.

The image which was caught on film by the 58-year-old photographer was deeply emotional and mesmerizing for us Americans to witness our precious Statue of Liberty – standing resolute and strong – against one of the most powerful forces in nature!

HER SISTER STATUE FACES HER FROM ACROSS THE OCEAN! The Statue of Liberty is one of the most cherished gifts to the United States from the people of France. Many replicas were created and several occupy various French cities. But the most special replica is located at the Ill aux Cygnes, not far from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

It is one-fourth the size of America’s Statue of Liberty and, like its original American counterpart, it also sits within an island (Swan Island, in the middle of the River Seine).

There is a very deep emotional story involving this replica in France. It originally faced towards the east but, somehow, this was thought to be wrong. So, it was carefully re-positioned so that it currently looks to the west, a touching tribute since it now officially faces in a new direction allowing her to look towards her bigger sister in New York.

The two sisters are now aligned to look towards one another, today.

The Liberty Bell, which remains a strong symbol of freedom, originated in England and at 2,080 pounds is presently located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Unlike the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell was not a gift from England, but was merely commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack in 1752.

The bell was cast with lettering from the Old Testament Bible with the words: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants therof.”

(Book of Leviticus, 25:10) A little known fact is that, at one time, the Liberty Bell was welltraveled! It’s true! Beginning in 1885, the City of Philadelphia allowed the famous bell to be put on display at various patriotic events and celebrations! This immortal symbol of America cracked the first time it was rung but was recast by local artisans, twice, for the same reason.

Both the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell remain among our most treasured icons from France and England, respectively.

SUMMATION. There is much to learn about our beautiful country and its unique and colorful heritage, and I only hope this article whets your appetite to continue your own voyage into learning about details and exciting facts about this great nation of ours.

The Rise and Fall of Napoleon

Napoleon Bonaparte emerged and became emperor of France following the chaos of the French Revolution.

After King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, were executed, chaos reigned over France. Neighboring nations such as Austria, Prussia (Germany), Spain, and Great Britain declared war on France. After the Revolution’s "Reign of Terror,” a young artillery officer quickly rose through the ranks capturing the hearts of his countrymen much as he had overwhelmed his enemies on the field of battle.

Napoleon was quick to capitalize on his popularity. He became known as “The Little Corporal,” which referred to his short stature and the rank from which he started in the Grand Army.

In 1805, Napoleon lost a critical sea battle at Cape Trafalgar off the coast of Spain. Realizing his Grand Army could never cross the English Channel as long as the Royal Navy controlled the seas, Napoleon marched his Grand Army across Europe, invading Russia.

Napoleon out-ran his supply lines, and being ill-equipped for winter and Russia's "scorched earth" tactic (burning everything and then retreating, leaving nothing for the enemy to survive on), Napoleon had to retreat from Moscow in 1812. He entered Russia with 600,000 troops, but only 40,000 survived to return home.

Napoleon returned to France where he was stripped of his crown and exiled to Elba, a small, desolate Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy. Napoleon was given a personal guard of 600 French troops, but the sea around Elba was patrolled by the Royal Navy. He managed to escape and return to power.

In 1815, Napoleon led his reorganized Grand Army against the British and the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in present-day Belgium.

Once again in defeat he was stripped of his power and exiled to the even smaller and more desolate British-owned island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic off the coast of Africa where he died mysteriously on or before May 15, 1821. It's long been a debate whether he died of natural causes or was murdered.

Napoleon's influence is still around us today. Every nation Napoleon conquered or controlled drives its vehicles on the right side of the road. The British drive on the left. The reason has been argued, but the most common explanation is that Napoleon wanted his cavalry to be able to draw their swords and fight as they road down a road with the weapon on the “outside of the column, instead of the inside. It makes sense if everyone was right-handed. Still, like his death, no one knows for sure.

Ask any Brit today and they’ll explain, “You Americans drive on the right side of the road, whereas we British drive on the ‘correct’ side.

Climate Action Plan Update

The City of Escondido is about to embark on a comprehensive update to our Climate Action Plan (CAP). The purpose of a CAP is to guide local policies that address climate change and impacts and create a sustainable, healthy and livable community.

Our first step is to measure the City’s baseline greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and establish target reductions. This work will be done primarily by technical

Someone is always suggesting that we “unplug.” Get away from cell phones, tablets, computers and our “connection” to the world.

Yet, I find myself “plugging in” more and more—and not to the Internet.

More and more things in my house are powered by rechargeable batteries. Tools, cameras, appliances and all the “connected” things like cell phones and e-readers. Some of you even have automobiles that require recharging.

It is my e-reader that gets most interactive when it needs recharging. As the percentage of charge goes down, I get a screen message, “Connect to charger or turn off now.” The next message is stronger and the back light

Recharging electronics is a 21st century problem, but long ago Jesus talked about recharging when he said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). The Message translation says, “You’ll recover your life.”

Jesus practiced what he preached. In the gospels, we often read of Jesus retreating “to a solitary place” to pray.

To meet with the Father, to recharge for the ministries that were coming.

He learned this from God who, after a busy six days creating the universe, rested on the seventh day and taught us both the rhythm of work and rest and the need to recharge on a regular basis.

There are all kinds of symptoms, diagnoses and names that describe going too long between rechargings. And an equal number of reasons and/or excuses for why we don’t do it.

The reason for taking the time to recharge is simple. God created us to recharge. Jesus practiced recharging and taught us to recover our life in Him. Don’t let your available power reduce to single digits. Plug in to the power of Jesus and recharge.

An attorney boarded an airplane in New Orleans with a box of frozen crabs, and asked a blonde stewardess to take care of them for him.

She took the box and promised to put it in the crew's refrigerator.

He advised her that he was holding her personally responsible for them staying frozen, mentioning in a very haughty manner that he was a lawyer, and proceeded to rant at her about what would happen if she let them thaw out.

Needless to say, she was annoyed by his behavior.

Shortly before landing in New York, she used the intercom to announce to the entire cabin, "Would the lawyer who gave me the crabs in New Orleans please raise your hand?"

Not one hand went up... so she took them home and ate them.

Two lessons here:

Night Out

Tired from waiting for their overdue baby, my daughter and her husband broke the monotony one night with a trip to the movies. My daughter went inside to get seats while my son-in-law bought popcorn and drinks in the lobby.

Paying for the refreshments, my son-inlaw knocked over his soda. The clerk mopped up the mess and refilled his cup. Rattled, he then joined his wife.

Talking over the background music, he dramatically described his embarrassing episode. One of his expressive gestures upset the bucket of popcorn. He sheepishly headed back to the lobby.

When he was out of earshot, the woman sitting next to my daughter turned and said, "You're not going to let him hold the baby, are you?"

The City has been successful in being awarded two grants regarding bicycles.

The first grant, Environmental Study for the Coastal Rail Trail across Loma Alta Creek would extend the existing Coastal Rail Trail limits in the City of Oceanside by creating a Class I bicycle and pedestrian path that spans across the Loma Alta Creek between Oceanside Boulevard and Morse Street.

This connection would improve pedestrian and bicycle mobility and create a relatively safe route for pedestrians and

Our readers often comment on our apparent antipathy toward Microsoft. It is true that we have a love/hate relationship with Microsoft. Every day we are plagued by the problems that Microsoft’s constant OS (operating systems) updates create for our home and small business customers. Corrupting and losing files and programs, crashing computers and rendering important programs and devices obsolete are common results of Microsoft’s, from a users point of view, unneeded, destructive and unwanted OS update programs.

Microsoft has long known that its core business of supplying OS (operating systems) and applications for PCs is shrinking and that it needs to find a new source of revenue if it is to continue to thrive and grow. Microsoft has had a monopoly position in PC OS and applications for nearly 40 years. 2015 marked the high water mark in Microsoft’s revenues at $94 billion. In 2016 and 2017 revenues were under $90 billion.

A part of Microsoft’s has been to leverage its dominance in the personal computer business into a profitable future in cloud based services and applications.

Windows 10 was the latest component in this strategy. Win 10 is designed to transition Microsoft’s customer base into the “cloud.” In order to accommodate the evolving cloud technology, Windows 10 has been forced to evolve along with it. That’s the reason Win10 is constantly being modified and “updated.” This creates compatibility issues for Win 10 users every time Microsoft implements a new “build.” There have been five new “builds” since July of 2015. Microsoft is aware that each new build creates problems and expensive repairs for some users but the feel they must keep up with changes up or risk losing ground to cloud rivals like Google, Apple and Amazon.

The biggest impediment to the execution of their Win 10 strategy is their own OS, Win 7. Microsoft

She was the first bilingual teacher aide at Central School in Escondido and taught English as a Second Language there for 25 years. She also taught traditional Mexican dance to students at Central School for their annual Fiesta.

Previously, she attended St. Mary Catholic Church in Escondido where she taught Faith Formation to children and participated in their Bible study group for many years.

Married Juan Antonio (Tony) Jauregui from Mexico City, DF in 1951 and together they raised 7 children. They were married for 58 years until he passed away in 2010.

Together they immigrated to the U.S. in 1960 and became U.S. citizens in 1967.

She was a very devoted wife and mother and a devout Roman Catholic. All who knew her loved her for her kindness, generous

created a massive problem for themselves with the highly aggressive “free Windows 10 upgrade program” They weedled, cajoled, threatened and eventually forced millions of happy Win7, to accept the free Win 10 “upgrade.” Now the Win 10 “updates” are beginning to clash with the older hardware and software on the Win7 and Win8 PCs that accepted the free Win10 “upgrade.”

Today OS usage is fairly evenly split between Win 10 and Win 7.

There are about 500 million user of each OS. In April and May Microsoft released the latest Win10 “update” (Build 1803). In the past month Microsoft’s Win10 dropped 2% in market share while Win7 gained a corresponding amount.

This shift was caused by Win 10 upgrade users choosing to go back to Win7 as the latest Win10 updates

MITSUKO “Mitzi” Kouma 1/17/1925 – 6/1/2018

Mitsuko “Mitzi” Kouma passed away June 1, 2018, at her home in Escondido, California. She died peacefully after a brief illness.

Mitzi was born January 17, 1925, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. She was the daughter of Zengoro Kouma and Koto Kouma (nee Nishida). The family returned to Japan in the late 30's. Mitzi was preceded in death by a sister Merry Kouma.

Mitzi enjoyed gardening. She was a volunteer for several years at the Park Avenue Senior Center in Escondido helping organize and run the weekly Saturday dance and will be remembered by her many friends for her smile and cheerfulness. Mitzi worked as a hair stylist in Beverly Hills for several years, and she and her sister owned and operated a Baskin Robbins store in Marina Del Rey until 1990 when they retired and moved to Escondido.

No local services are planned. Mitzi’s cremains will be sent to Japan to be interned with her parents and sister.

Vista Friends and Newcomers – Fun and Friendship is the watchword for the Vista Friends and Newcomers. Coffee meetings are held the 2nd Thursday each month at Arcadia Retirement Home, 1080 Arcadia Place in Vista. The programs are varied with interesting speakers. Membership entitles members to participate in all of the interest groups and other special functions; (some have additional costs). Center of the Valley Chapter of DAR Meets Its Goals - Regent Sharon Bartholomew proudly announced the end of the almost two year Valley Center Cemetery Project at the June meeting of the Center of the Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). Hundreds of hours have been donated to this project.

The goals of the project were to digitalize records in the Valley Center Cemetery from Rolodex to a modern spreadsheet, and to upload complete and accurate information to Find-A-Grave. Now and future generations will be able to locate a family member’s grave, and it’s also a useful tool for researchers and genealogists. It is a positive reflection of our community that people all over the country will be able to find information about people buried in Valley Center Cemetery because the records are so complete. This is a win/win for everyone.

be uploaded. The cemetery was walked innumerable times, hundreds of headstones were photographed; photos were edited and uploaded to Find a Grave. The spreadsheets contain over 2,000 entries but because paperwork wasn’t always done in the early days of the cemetery, the actual number of people buried there is unknown.

(Records go back to the 1800s) Louise Kelly, President of the Cemetery Board, stated that several times when digging a grave, a body would already be found in it and there would be no record of the person.

“Because of this, estimates range from 2,000 to 4,000 number of persons buried there,” states Ms. Bartholomew.

The original list of veterans buried in the cemetery was 42 when the DAR first began placing flags on the graves for Memorial Day and Veterans Day. Through their research, the Project Team has identified over 190 veterans and the discoveries continue. This research led to the promotion of the Wreaths Across America project and national recognition of the Valley Center Cemetery and our local veterans. The project has come to an end with the acceptance of the newly digitalized and cross referenced records presented to Ms. Kelly who accepted them for the cemetery board. The members of the Cemetery Project Team included DAR members: Sharon Bartholomew, Susan Harris, Linda Perez, Margaret Simonsen, and Wendy Zengschmidt.
