While Americans eat far more hamburgers per year (50-billion annually) than hot dogs (20 billion per year), that statistic changes with hot dogs being more popular over 4th of July than hamburgers. That is why July is officially designated as “National Hot Dog Month.”

Technically speaking, 8 of our early U. S. Presidents were not born in the United States because they were born (before) the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and, therefore, were officially born in the British colonies at the time! While it is true that all of our U. S. Presidents were Americans when sworn into presidential office, with George Washington our first U. S. President in 1789, they all took office (after) the Declaration of Independence. However, they were not all born in the United States since 8 of our early presidents were born (before) the United States was created!

The 4th of July was celebrated as early as 1777 with major celebrations, for example, in Philadelphia, where parades, fireworks and a thirteen-shot cannon salute took place. But, the first president to officially celebrate with 4th of July ceremonies at the White House was none other than Thomas Jefferson in 1801.

The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.

Older Woman: Yes, here are the registration papers. The officer is quite stunned.

Incidentally, Thomas Jefferson was one of only three U.S. Presidents who happened to have died on the 4th of July.

The other two were John Adams and James Monroe.

Jefferson and Adams not only died on July 4th, but they passed away on the very same day, only hours apart from each other (with Jefferson passing away first)!

On the other end of the ledger, President Calvin Coolidge is the only American president (so far) who was actually born on July 4th, in the year 1872.

Summer Enrichment Camps for Girls at Academy of Our Lady of Peace – From July 8-19, summer enrichment camps will be offered at the Academy of Our Lady of Peace for girls entering 4th through 7th grades in the fall of 2019, and they can experience the magic of an allgirls school environment through STEAM-focused camps that are taught by OLPs experienced faculty, students and alumnae. These full-day camps will each run for one week long, Monday through Friday from 8:30am to 3pm. If we were to step into a time machine and journey back to the era of our Founding Fathers, there may be some unexpected surprises waiting for us; things that were overlooked and never taught in our grammar, middle-school, or even college classes.

Are you kidding?! This is hard to believe, but if you picked “B” Abraham Lincoln, I’m just plumb impressed with you! In 1831, when Abraham Lincoln moved to New Salem, Illinois, he was soon confronted by a well-known bully by the name of Jack Armstrong. It was here where Armstrong challenged Lincoln to a wrestling match.

Lincoln was a clerk, at the time, at a store known as Denton Offutt. To Armstrong’s misfortune, Lincoln accepted the wrestling challenge, which quickly grabbed the town’s attention in the form of frenzied betting by the townsfolk.

Lincoln won the match, and also his challenger’s respect, from that day onward. The town’s residents quickly learned of Abe’s supreme wrestling skills. As a young wrestler, America’s Birthday!

On June 28, at 2:53 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called concerning an active burglary of a home on the 1000 block of Palm Ave. The resident reported that they came home and discovered a stranger inside their home, at which point they exited their home and called police.

The Police Department responded and arrested 27-year-old Blake Freeman who is believed to be a local transient.

Freeman was arrested for Burglary and Resisting Arrest, and will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

Serious Injury Accident/Escondido

On 06/29/19 at about 01:35 AM, Escondido Police and Fire responded to a report of a single vehicle collision on Bear Valley Parkway north of Boyle. Officers arrived and found a single vehicle rollover. The solo male driver was likely not wearing his seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle The driver was transported to PMC where he is listed in serious condition.

Based on witness statements and physical evidence at the scene, it appears a 2003 BMW M3 convertible was traveling south on Bear Valley Parkway from Glenridge Road at a high rate of speed. The driver, Emigdio Quiroz, a 20-yearold Escondido resident, lost control

of the vehicle causing it to roll over and ultimately coming to rest upside down.

The driver displayed symptoms of alcohol impairment and will likely face DUI charges pending toxicology results. Quiroz suffered serious head injuries and was admitted to the hospital. The investigation is ongoing and is being conducted by Traffic Investigator Nick Kluka.

Serious Injury Accident Carlsbad

On June 29, 2019 at 9:35 a.m., Officers from the Carlsbad Police Department responded to Rancho Santa Fe Road and Camino Junipero for a report of a vehicle collision. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles on Rancho Santa Fe Road south of Camino Junipero with extensive damage.

Preliminary reports advise that a male driving a silver Hyundai Tucson ran the red light at southbound Rancho Santa Fe Road and Camino Junipero, while a black Honda Accord with two occupants was making the left-hand turn to go westbound on Camino Junipero from Rancho Santa Fe Road. The Hyundai collided head on into the passenger side of the Honda.

The driver of the Hyundai has been identified as a 25 year-old male.

The driver and passenger of the Honda have been identified as 22 year-old males. All three parties were transported to a local area hospital for moderate to severe injuries. The investigation is ongoing with southbound Rancho Santa Fe Road at Camino Junipero remaining closed for approximately

Man About Town

Those of you who didn’t have a chance to live in, grow up in, or vacation in small town America missed out on a special slice of life.

Sandy Dee Knutsen, superb admin specialist for my pal, Dr. Greg Hurt, the brilliant dentist in San Marcos, CA., did. So did I. Sandy writes: My home town of Wells Minnesota population 2343, was founded in 1869 by Colonel Clark w.

Every year we celebrate Colonel Days (named after the Colonel) during Aug 15-18 with free corn on the cob. I can remember mom taking several empty roasters and coming home with them filled with corn. There is a very long parade with more tractors than you can count. Farmers showing off their newest equipment. A large display of fireworks, Little Miss Colonel

As a teenage I walked beans, row after row. All you needed was a hoe and a hat. If you see a weed you removed it. I was too short to work in the corn fields. Work ethics were taught at a young age.

The Southern Minnesota railroad was completed to Wells in 1870. I can remember as a child the train coming through town just as I was falling to sleep. To this day if I hear a train whistle it brings a smile to my face. The train depot is now a museum but the trains still run every day.

Well-known landmarks near Wells are the Rochester Mayo Clinic, the Spam Museum and the Jolly Green Giant. If you like to fish it is the Land of 10,000 lakes. There is a lake in every town whether big or small.

One of the most unusual events in Minnesota took place from 19431946 and involved several thousand German prisoners of war. The POW’s were used to solve a serious labor problem since there was a

News from San Marcos City Hall

The San Marcos City Council Tuesday oversaw the changing of the guard for its fire department, and approved new contracts for city employees and supervisors.

Dan Barron, a 21-year veteran of firefighting, is taking over as chief.

Barron was hired as a firefighter/paramedic in San Marcos in 2001, and rose through the ranks to fire engineer, captain, battalion chief and division chief.

During Tuesday’s meeting, the council also approved new contracts for classified employees and supervisors. The classified employee contract spells out details of items ranging from the city’s casual Friday dress code, to uniform allowances for certain workers, but most significantly, it provides scheduled pay increases for city staff, and describes employees’ increased responsibilities for pension contributions.

Employees can earn merit raises of 3 percent per year for up to 10 annual step increases, until they reach the top tier. On top of that, starting July 1, the city will also increase pay rates by 2 percent per year, for four years. However, those increases will partially offset hikes to employees pension contributions.

Both classified and supervisory staff can also receive longevity bonuses at 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years of service.

Three of them live on the same street.

The tornado whistle still blows on the first Wednesday of the month to make sure it still works. The town whistle still blows at 6:00 am, noon and 5:00 pm. I guess that’s so everyone knows what time to go for lunch and supper.

One farmer had his Peterbuilt truck painted in the 911 pictures to show his support and Patriotism. We can’t forget about the Vikings or maybe we can. One home is painted in purple and gold.

Small towns are great! People are wonderful! It’s all about family!

Of all the exotic pets kept at the U. S. White House down through the years, none compared to the pet alligators that belonged to President John Quincy Adams and President Herbert Hoover!

Starting with early U. S. President John Quincy Adams, the alligator was an unusual gift to the sitting president from a French general. Adams rather enjoyed the startled reactions to his pet alligator and continued showing-off his exotic reptile to disbelieving guests at the White House! The fierce-looking alligator was, initially, kept in the White House’s unfinished East Room and its nearby bathtub.

The scary intruder was eventually relocated to a different home.

Not to be outdone by the John Quincy Adams administration,

President Hoover’s pet German shepherd, King Tut, was forever nervous around the two alligators, as was the president’s Secret Service agents who kept a watchful eye over the reptiles!

Developmentally Disabled - We are Listening!

The Assembly Select Committee on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities works to assist all Californians with developmental disabilities (I/DD) through advocacy and research, and by acting as an information resource as the Legislature develops policies impacting California’s I/DD population, estimated at just under 630,000 in 2017.

As a member of this important committee, Chaired by Assemblymember Jim Frazier (D - Fairfield), I am very pleased that a public hearing was recently held in San Diego to discuss the needs of this region’s I/DD community. These needs include housing, transportation, education, employment, healthcare services and much more.

At the hearing, administrators, including Carlos Flores, Executive Director of the San Diego Regional Center, care providers, advocates and most importantly, I/DD community members, provided insights about their experiences at local Regional Centers directly to lawmakers tasked with making decisions that directly impact their lives.

Regional Centers are private non-profits under contract with the Department of Developmental Services to provide support services for I/DD individuals.

California’s 21 Regional Centers are each governed by a board of directors; half are persons with developmental disabilities or family members, and

Did you know that winds actually move the Statue of Liberty? Well, it’s a fact!

Winds of just 50 mph cause her to sway up to three inches and her torch moves as much as six inches!

SHE HAS BEEN STRUCK

BY LIGHTNING OVER 600 TIMES! Because of her singular height, our beloved Statue of Liberty has been a lightning rod at times and has been struck numerous times! It has been estimated that she has drawn around 600 lightning bolts since she was first put into place in the New World!

The first time a photographer officially captured a bolt of lightning striking our Statue of Liberty was in 2010. The celebrated photo made world news! The photographer, Jay Fine, said he had waited more than 40 years to capture the perfect shot! The image which was caught on film by the 58year-old photographer was deeply emotional and mesmerizing for us Americans to witness our precious Statue of Liberty – standing resolute and strong – against one of the most powerful forces in nature!

HER SISTER STATUE FACES HER FROM ACROSS THE OCEAN!

The Statue of Liberty is one of the most cherished gifts to the United States from the people of France. Many replicas were created and several occupy various French cities. But the most special replica is located at the Ill aux Cygnes, not far from the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

It is one-fourth the size of America’s Statue of Liberty and, like its original American counterpart, it also sits within an island (Swan Island, in the middle of the River Seine).

There is a very deep emotional story involving this replica in France. It originally faced towards the east but, somehow, this was thought to be wrong.

So it was carefully re-positioned so that it currently looks to the west, a touching tribute since it now officially faces in a new direction allowing her to look towards her bigger sister in New York.

The two sisters are now aligned

to look towards one another, today.

The Liberty Bell, which remains a strong symbol of freedom, originated in England and at 2,080 pounds is presently located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Unlike the Statue of Liberty, the Liberty Bell was not a gift, but, was merely commissioned from the London firm of Lester and Pack in 1752. The bell was cast with lettering from the Old Testament Bible with the words: “Proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants therof.” (Book of Leviticus, 25:10)

A little known fact is that, at one time, the Liberty Bell was well-traveled!

It’s true!

Beginning in 1885, the City of Philadelphia allowed the famous bell to be put on display at various patriotic events and celebrations, such as the 4th of July! This immortal symbol of America cracked the first time it was rung but was recast by local artisans, twice, for the same reason.

Both the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell remain among our most treasured icons from France and England, respectively.

SUMMATION.

There is much to learn about our beautiful country and its unique and colorful heritage, and I only hope this article whets your appetite to continue your own voyage into learning about new details and exciting little-known facts about this great nation of ours.

We Americans love to have fun and we love, cherish, and embrace the bright sunshine of democracy which we all revel in.

Someone once said, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.”

I second that notion.

We may not have a perfect country, nor a perfect government, but we are still the model and envy of the world today.

Hitler under estimated the stamina of the British people and the skill of RAF pilots and their aircraft. While the Me-109 fighter was a fast and agile aircraft, the RAF “Spitfire” was a superior weapon.

The Battle For Free World Survival

Arguably, the “Battle of Britain,” which took place in the summer and fall of 1940, saved the free world from Nazi tyranny and possible world domination – at least it slowed down Germany’s Adolf Hitler.

“The Battle of Britain” didn’t win the six-year long World War II, but it brought Hitler’s menacing march across Europe to a standstill. Hitler didn’t conquer any more countries, thanks to the stubborn British people.

That encounter should be more aptly named: “The Battle For Freedom.”

After Hitler’s lightning success in capturing most of Western Europe army’s German the using “Blitzkreig” (lighting warfare) tactics, only Great Britain remained to be harnessed in the Nazi yolk of dictatorship. All that stood in the way of Nazi domination of England, Scotland, and Wales was the English Channel and the world’s most powerful flotilla: Britain’s Royal Navy and a beleaguered group of young pilots of the Royal Air Force.

At that time, German Luftwaffe (air force) was the most powerful in the world with more than 2,500 fighters and bombers; Britain’s RAF numbered less than 800 fighters and bombers. Probably around 600 usable aircraft was a more-realistic accounting. Hitler decided that bombing British airfields and demolishing the RAF would be a prelude to a Channel crossing and land invasion from the French coast some 25 miles away. Such a military maneuver hadn’t been tried in centuries.

Luftwaffe leader and Hitler’s No. 2, Reichsmarshall Herrman Goring, underestimated the tenacity of the British people’s will to resist as well as the bravado of RAF pilots. In order to equalize the numbers, British pilots had to shoot down invading German planes on a fourto-one ratio.

Hitler was confidant his bombers could overwhelm the British with brute force, knocking out coastal defenses and shipping, eventually giving the Germans air control over the whole of southern England.

When the initial mission failed to destroy the RAF, Hitler launched a night-time bombing campaign, or as the British called it, the “Blitz,” of London. So confident was Goering of his air force’s superiority, he bragged to Hitler that if any British bombs ever fell on Berlin, he mockingly told the Nazi leader he could call the rotund air commander, “Meyer,” (a Jewish name considered by the Nazis to be a supreme insult).

When the first RAF bombs rained down on Berlin, no one knows what Hitler said to”Meyer” Goering, but

The Brits united under Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s leadership to defend their nation at all costs.

They refused to give up, even as their cities were repeatedly bombed. The British had an advantage over the Germans: radar, which they invented and perfected. The Brits knew exactly when the Luftwaffe was coming, in what strength and at what altitude.

RAF fighters, “Spitfires” and “Hurricanes,” kept German air raids at bay with a great cost to the RAF, but not as much as to the Nazis.

British and German aircraft factories were turning out planes as fast as possible to keep up with the daily destruction. Still, when the Battle of Britain ended, the British had lost some 900 aircraft to the Germans’ 2,300 planes. The RAF had nearly equaled their needed “four-to-one” combat ratio.

Though the United States had yet to enter the war, President Roosevelt persuaded Congress to approve the “Lend-Lease” agreement, which sent ships, planes, guns, ammo, and desperately-needed food and medical supplies to the beleaguered British people. Historians generally agree that if the British nation had not stopped the Nazi aggression, an attack on North America would have been imminent. That five-month air battle in the summer of 1940, might very well have preserved our democratic way of life instead of living under a dictatorship.

Churchill paid tribute to those legendary Battle of Britain airmen by saying: “Never so many owed so much to so few.”

A WWII Footnote: During the air battle with the British, Hermann Goering asked his top flight leader and fighter ace what he needed to defeat the RAF? Luftwaffe Lt. Gen. Adolf Galland replied: “Sir, give me a squadron of Spitfires.” Goering was not amused.

North County Chamber Honors Oasis with Impact Award - San Diego Oasis, a nonprofit organization serving people over the age of 50 with office locations in Escondido and La Mesa, was honored by the North San Diego Business Chamber “Celebration of Business” event held at the Bernardo Winery. “We are so thrilled to be included among so many worthy North County businesses and nonprofits,” cites Simona Valanciute, San Diego Oasis President and CEO. Oasis also operates an intergenerational literacy tutoring program that encourages older adults to work with at-risk children. Local Resource Center Invites Donors to Support Seniors During 65-Hour Online Giving Event - The senior population is rapidly increasing, yet, the pace of government and philanthropic support for seniors is not. Often times, public funding for services and programs that benefit seniors is the first to receive funding cuts. At the Foundation for Senior Well-being we know this all too well. Our services and programs are in high demand with the growing senior population, and we rely heavily on the generous support of the North County community to continue to provide these programs and services that empower seniors to remain independent and to age with dignity.

From July 9th to 11th, the Foundation for Senior Wellbeing is participating in the fourth-annual GIVE65 Event, a 65-hour online giving event to help nonprofit organizations serving seniors raise funds online and increase awareness. This year, we’re raising funds for the Senior Information Resource Center, a program dedicated to improving the quality of life for North County’s older adults. The month of July is a good month to reflect on our country’s greatness, especially on the 4th .

In fact, I would be a supporter of making the entire month a celebration of America’s greatness.

The visions of our founding Fathers, the creation of the Declaration of Independence, and The Bill Of Rights, ought to be heralded as our true heroes.

Their efforts far exceeded the monetary and political goals of independence. Their virtue was to see the greatness of the human being and his potential. This included the embryonic creative ability of all people regardless of

class, education, race, color, religion, age, sex, and social background. It was the open door and window for America’s creativity and true greatness. A belief in the fundamental rights and ability of the human being based on the Bible and man’s history, gave to this country and world the unlocking of the human mind and spirit.

Little do we realize just what that potential was and is. We need more time than just the 4th to explore and appreciate what Senator John Kennedy says in his book, “A Nation of Immigrants,” to see yet what can be and is by allowing all those within and without our borders to be truly free in their pursuits with their God given talents. I quote, “Every ethnic minority, in seeking its own freedom, helped strengthen the fabric of liberty in America’s life. Similarly, every aspect of the American economy has profited from the contributions of immigrants.”

And I might humbly add that every human being can and should be free to add to America’s greatness.

San Marcos Family Camp Out returns July 27

Set for Saturday, July 27 to Sunday, July 28, the annual San Marcos Family Campout is just around the corner. Offering a convenient, close-to-home camping experience, the campout is complete with outdoor games, arts and crafts, a flashlight hike, campfire songs, a hot dog cookout, s’mores, and breakfast the next morning.

Rain or shine, campers will have a chance to sleep under the stars on the grasses of Walnut Grove Park located at 1950 Sycamore Drive. Each family will be assigned a ten by ten space to pitch their tent and set up camp. Upon arrival, the city’s recreation leaders facilitate field games like tug-o-war, potato sack races, 3-legged races, and other exciting relays. Arts and crafting activities will also be available throughout the day and include animal and bug stamping, camp fan project, bug boxes, and bookmark making.

Whether you are a first-time camper or an outdoor enthusiast, tickets are just $15 per person so bring your camping gear and get ready for an overnight adventure. Be sure to register online by Friday, July 19 for a camping experience without all the hassle. All ages are welcome.

This past week, we had a public hearing from SANDAG on their Public Transportation concept. It was a good dialogue between those in attendance and the planners at SANDAG. I really like these types of meetings because often the challenges we face as a community cannot be reduced to simple sound bites. There are always second and third order effects to whatever we decide. So, these meetings help explain the complexity of an issue. An example is that as grandiose as these plans may seem now, they are only designed to move the commuter percentage from roughly 3.5% to 10%. But taking just 10% of the commuters off the road, will dramatically increase the travel times and reduce GHG. And if you are asking yourself how does that happen, I would encourage you to come to their next presentation.

Finally, if you haven’t noticed, we are soliciting applications for the outreach committees that I’ve talked about in the past. If you are interested in volunteering and being on one of the committees please go to the city website and fill out an application.

New Budget Funds Quality Services

The Vista City Council has approved a $139 million budget for the fiscal year which began July 1. The city budget has two main sections, the Operating Budget, which covers the day to day work of the city, such as providing fire and law enforcement services, parks and recreation, and other core services, and the Capital Improvement Program, which covers major construction projects. The spending plans have been developed to meet the needs of residents and businesses of the City, as well as City Council’s community priorities through June 30, 2020. The City is on firm ground with its financial health, infrastructure investments, and budget priorities. The Capital Improvement Budget, which funds long-term infrastructure projects such as street improvements, traffic signals, sewer infrastructure, park upgrades, and the Paseo Santa Fe downtown improvements, will fund almost $20 million in projects across the city during this new budget year.

adults have never been eager to put their trust “governments” to create utopias to match their idealism.

Before the Internet and “smart phones” the young grew up in constant contact with older generations whose knowledge and experience tended to bring a reality check to youthful idealism. With the rise of the Internet and “smart phones” the Millennial and Y generations have been able to virtually shut out adult influence and replace it with their own digital peer culture. Their predominate exposure to the adult world are the “Ivory Tower” academics who school them. Teachers do make them put down their smart phones but teachers too often are afflicted with an arrested development version of the same “social justice warrior” syndrome that infects their students.

Where this generation is taking us is a topic for another day.

Today we’ll narrow the focus to start a discussion of our own observations of how the “Internet revolution” affects our day to day lives and those of the people we see here at The Computer Factory. For most of us over forty, the Internet, computers and smart phones are simply better and easier ways to do the things that we have done all our lives anyway.

Banking, shopping, paying bills, figuring taxes, scheduling and booking trips, getting the latest news, pursuing hobbies and staying in touch with friends and relatives. This approach to learning technology is called “tops down.” It is where you seek and learn to use a tool or technology as a better way to accomplish some well defined tasks. This approach works well for learning how to use technology to do

If you are like most people who go to a horse race you wager on a particular horse because of its name, or maybe on how it looks. Sure, there are some people who study the racing program, and bet on a horse because of the jockey or even the trainer.

But lets face it, most people who are novices at the track, and don’t mind too much losing a few dollars, will have fun just betting on the horses with unusual names.

Pity the poor horse with a name of I WAS A MISTAKE, or I’M A LOSER, or DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON ME. The horses have to bear being called those names their entire life.

And to think that horse racing has been called the sport of Kings. It makes you wonder what some of the kings called their horses. Prince?

Duke? Earl?

But how did horse racing become so popular and remain that way to this day? After all, its origins date back to about 4500 BC among the nomadic tribesmen of Central Asia, the ones who first domesticated the horse. The ancient Greek Olympics had events for both chariot and mounted horse racing.

Modern horse racing had its origins in the 12th century, when English Knights returned from the Crusades with Arab horses. For the next 400 or so years, Arab stallions were imported

the things you want to do but it doesn’t encourage you to learn the actual technology itself.

By contrast, the Millennials came to the “Internet explosion” without a shopping list of tasks. They see it as a world of unlimited opportunities. The Internet pulls them in and leads them along its paths. The “bottoms up” learning process has given Millennials a fundamental understanding of how the digital universe works. For them it has become everything; news, entertainment, social life etc. It is an alternate and possibly friendlier reality every bit as genuine as the physical world.

Few of us over forty can comprehend the relationship that Millennials have with the Internet because we have only a functional relationship with it.

If the Internet went away tomorrow we would pick up where we left off

and bred to English mares to produce horses that had both speed and endurance. English nobles started to wager on their own on races between the fastest of the horses.

And so began betting on the ponies!

During Queen Anne’s reign in the 18th century, horse racing became a professional sport. Racing evolved to the point where spectators bet as well.

Tracks sprung up all over England, and large purses of money were offered to attract the best horses.

Owning and breeding horses for racing became very profitable. The first central governing authority was formed in 1750 in England, and called the Jockey Club. It still regulates English racing to this day.

As you might expect, British settlers brought horses, and horse racing as well to America. The first racetrack in America was laid out in 1665 on Long Island. However, organized racing in the United States did not exist until 1868. By 1890, there were over 300 tracks operating in the United States.

As there was no governing authority by then, many track had criminal elements. Finally, in 1894, the country’s biggest track and stable owners met and formed the American Jockey Club.

In the early 1900s, an anti-gambling feeling almost wiped out the sport. By 1908, only a couple dozen tracks remained. In that same year, parimutuel betting on the Kentucky Derby was introduced, and a turnabout occurred. State legislatures allowed horse racing in exchange for a portion of the money wagered.

Horse racing started to flourish again.

Horses like Man O’ War captured the imagination of people across the country.

After a decline in the sport during the

This is a very fundamental stumbling block to inter-generational understanding. It is not going to change and neither are we or the Millennials... This inter-generational schism is a primary source of fuel for generating political discord and whipping up intolerance.

Somehow someone needs to find the magic words that will bring us together again.

Next week we’ll discuss how a superficial understanding of Internet technology leads to problems and expense for our customers.

1950s and 1960s, the sport bounced back in the 1970s, due in part because of such horses as Secretariat, Seattle Slew, and Affirmed. All three of those horses won the American Triple Crown, consisting of the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness, and the Belmont Stakes. The popularity of the sport has continued to this day.

Wagering on the races has been the main appeal of the sport, and the reason that horse racing has survived.

Betting at American tracks is done using a pari-mutuel wagering system.

Under this system a fixed percentage of the total amount wagered is taken out for racing purses, state and local taxes, and track operating costs. The remaining amount is divided by the number of individual correct wagers, to determine the payoff, or odds, on each bet. The odds are continuously calculated and posted on the track toteboard during the open betting period before each race. Naturally, horse racing items are very popular among collectors.

A lot of three Triple Crown horse racing jockeys signed photographs, signed by jockeys Edgar Prado, Ron Turcotte, and Steve Cauthen sold for slightly over $200.

Four silver racing trophies owned by actor Jack Klugman were sold at auction for $2750.

However, two gold horse racing trophies were individually auctioned for much more, one for $13,000, and the other for $31,000, which was awarded to Stagehand for winning the Santa Anita Handicap in 1938.

And for those real horse racing enthusiasts, a signed race worn silk from 2002 was auctioned for $457. Try fitting into one of those. I know I could not.
