Death is still a mystery, but an analysis of those who report NearDeath Experiences provides a greater understanding of what happens when life ends. Scientific research into thousands of NDEs has led to new attitudes about the dying process. Near-DeathExperiences are not a new phenomenon. The oldest recorded medical record of one was in 1740, the date of an account published in a book purchased by anthropologist Dr. Phillipe Charlier. He paid $1 for the ancient tome at an antique shop, not The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

expecting to create medical history. Dr. Charlier’s book described a medical patient who fell unconscious, then reported seeing a pure bright light that was interpreted as being Heaven. The patient, attracted by a sense of well-being, wished to approach the light, but an unidentified voice cautioned him to go no further or he’d not be able to return to his former life. A Classical Description

This is a classical description of a Near-Death Experience, as recorded in thousands of reports. In Anita

Moorjani’s case, she received healing as well. Diagnosed with lymphoma in 2002, Anita fell into a coma February 2, 2006. She weighed just 85 pounds at the time. As she told the Today Show in 2016, the effect of her coma was as if, “I hovered above my body, with 360-degree peripheral vision of the whole area around me. Not just in the room where I was, but other areas as well.” She describes a reunion with her deceased father and being mesmerized by a beautiful light. “I wanted to get closer to the light, but father told me to stay where I was, or I

would not be able to return home.” Anita hesitated in following these directions because, “Of the beauty of my surroundings – the light, the fact that all pain had left my body, that all my fears had been erased. For the first time ever, I felt unconditional love.” Reluctantly, Anita returned, and authored a top-selling book, Dying to Be Me. In it she writes, “Within 4 days my tumors had shrunk 70 per cent. Within a month, my cancer was completely gone.” Skeptics at the time said her writing

was the work of a flighty young woman, seeking attention for a hallucination while ignoring the medical treatments that saved her life. Perhaps, but she has continued to persist in describing her event, conducting interviews, making speeches and writing articles which has given her prominence in the field. Other highly respected persons have described the Near-DeathExperience vividly, including the famous American writer, Ernest Hemingway. While recuperating from serious shrapnel wounds, he wrote in a letter to his family dated October 18, 1918: “All the heroes are dead. And the real heroes are the parents. Dying is simple. I’ve looked at death and I really know it.” In his much-admired prose, at a later date Hemingway described his experience this way: “A big Austrian trench mortar bomb, of the type that used to be called ash cans, exploded in the darkness. I died then. I felt my soul or something coming right out of my body, like you'd pull a silk handkerchief out of a pocket by one corner. It flew around and then came back and went in again and I wasn't dead anymore.” This description contains enough similarities to other reported NDEs that authorities say it is the real thing. A brief definition of a Near-Death-

And that, my friend, is the sad definition of "OLDER". #2

Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, "How old was your husband?"

"98," she replied: "Two years older than me" "So you're 96," the undertaker commented.

She responded, "Hardly worth going home, is it?"

Experience (NDE), is a personal event associated with death or impending death; it features detachment from the body; feelings of levitation and usually, a beautiful light (though not always,) and a feeling of well-being or love. NDEs are frequently confused with an Out-of-Body Experience (OBE), which is not associated with death or dying, but describes a floating feeling or the ability to look down on one’s body or a scene evolving oneself. Scientific Proof

Charlotte Martial of the University of Liege in Belgium has scientifically supervised a large number of NDEs over twenty-five years. She reports that, “Our findings suggest that these experiences may not feature the same or all the same elements as reported by others, and these elements do not seem to appear in a fixed order, but a NearDeath Experience has a universal character that exhibits enough common features as to be identified and verifiable. We nevertheless observed a temporal variability within the distribution of reported features so strong as to ascertain the validity of a real experience as opposed to an imaginary event.”

I think Professor Martial is saying NDEs have certain characteristics that set them apart from accounts that border on the fanciful. One thing is certain, the general public has a keen appetite to learn more about this phenomenon. Books #3

describing these events sell quite well. Books On Near-Deaths are Popular Proof of Heaven, a work by Eben Alexander, relates his experience while in a week-long coma brought on by meningitis. It enjoyed a 94week run on the New York Times Best-seller list. Mary C. Neal’s book, To Heaven and Back, an accounting of her NDE while submerged in a river after a kayaking accident was a best-seller for 36 weeks.

In this well-written text, she tells of her experience, interviewing the Emergency Medical Technicians who rescued her. According to the lead EMT’s chronology, she was underwater 12 minutes. “Drowned,” he said in his report. At the same time, he had a feeling she “had not fully crossed over.” After 24 minutes he yelled at her to breath. To his amazement, she did so.

As for Mary, she recounts that when she was out – eyes closed, breathing stopped, pulse non-existent – she traveled to a beautiful place of peace and serenity where she was greeted by a group of 8 ‘spirits’ who were over-joyed to see her, overwhelming her with hugs, smiles and expressions of affection. “I hated to leave them,” she writes, “but I knew that someday I would return to them and when I did, that visit would be permanent.” The most successful book about

I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; Hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license.

THE SENILITY PRAYER :

AN ANGELIC LITTLE BOY

An angelic little boy was waiting for his mother outside the ladies room of the gas station. As he stood there, he was approached by a man who asked, "Sonny, can you tell me where the Post Office is?" The little boy replied, "Sure! Just go straight down this street two blocks and turn to your right. It's on the left."

The man thanked the boy kindly, complimented him on how bright he was,

NDEs is Heaven Is for Real, the story of a young boy who told his parents he “slipped away” while undergoing emergency surgery. In the time he was gone, he reported visiting Heaven. His father recounts his son’s description of this event while co-authoring the book. It was greeted with great glee by evangelical leaders though their usual reaction to such reports was to condemn them as the Devil’s work. This book has sold 10 million copies, and continues to sell widely, grossing over $91 million in sales. These best sellers satisfy the parameters set by Professor Martial of Liege University to judge the validity of NDEs. However, several new books – Heaven In a Nutshell and If Not Heaven, What? - have been greeted with skepticism, which seems to be rooted in the revelation that the subject in The Boy Who Came Back From Heaven, a 2010 sensation, recently admitted he fabricated his entire story. Ah, the follies of the mind.

Lauren Slater writing in Sun Magazine stated, “What a gift it would be if we could visit death and then return to report on what we saw there. Would it be the infinite emptiness so many of us fear? Would it be skyscrapers and condominiums with rent control and beauty salons, perfectly healthy people with no pulses getting their hair layered and permed? Would it

and said, "I'm the new pastor in town. If you and your mommy come to church 0n Sunday, I'll show you how to get to Heaven.

The little boy replied with a chuckle; "You're kidding me, right? You can't even find the Post Office.” •••• There were two men shipwrecked on this island. The minute they got on to the island one of them started screaming and yelling, "We're going to die! We're going to die! There's no food! No water! We're going to die!" The second man was propped up against a palm tree and acting so calmly it drove the first man crazy. "Don't you understand?!? We're going to die!!" The second man replied, "You don't understand, I make $100,000 a week."

The first man looked at him quite dumbfounded and asked, "What difference does that make?!? We're on an island with no food and no water! We're going to DIE!!!"

The second man answered, "You just don't get it. I make $100,000 a week and I tithe ten percent on that $100,000 a week. My pastor will find me!" How it works

be a world as we know it, only with bodies atomized and dispersed into particles of dust, dirt and light? No one can say, although those who have died and been resuscitated tend to claim that the other side is a place of unspeakable beauty. Of course, the beauty they have seen may well be the hallucinations of an oxygen-deprived brain on its way out.” Further Scientific Proof

Slater’s statement contains two hoped for elements that are already fact. First, Southampton University has published thousands of reports from those who have experienced death and lived to tell of it, some in great detail. They describe beautiful forests of stately trees, water falls of wonderous beauty and great stretches of green grass and colorful flowers. Secondly, scientific literature disputes the claims that NDEs occur as the result of physical changes in a stressed or dying brain, or are brought about by oxygen shortage, imperfect anesthesia, or the body’s neurochemical responses to trauma. These claims have long been proven to not be the cause of NDEs. In depth studies show medical conditions under which NDEs occur are too varied to explain yet are so widespread and consistent in their occurrence that most authorities attribute their cause as being para-

Recent books by Sam Parnia and Pim van Lommel, both physicians, describe studies published in peerreviewed journals that attempt to pin down what happens during NDEs under controlled experimental conditions. Parnia and his colleagues published results from their latest such study, involving more than 2,000 cardiac-arrest patients, in October. They attribute NDEs as being of a spiritual nature that cannot be duplicated in laboratories. “They leave the participant in a better condition or state of mind than that which previously existed.”

The writings of Mary Neal and Eben Alexander (authors previously mentioned), recounting their own NDEs have given a great boost to paranormal aspects of the phenomenon, giving the spiritual explanation new respectability. Mary Neal was, before her NDE, the director of spinal surgery at the University of Southern California (she is now in private practice) and speaks widely on the subject. Eben Alexander is a neurosurgeon who taught and practiced at several prestigious hospitals and medical schools, including Brigham and Women’s and Harvard University. His conclusions are similar to Mary Neal’s, that the cause of NDEs is spiritual leaving the participant in a healed condition (as with Anita Moorjani), or with a mission, (as with him and Mary Neal); Alexander’s new aim is to advance

dren, teens, and adults to “Endless Exploration.” The Challenge, which runs from June 9th to July 28th, includes special events and celebrates reading for all ages. learning within the medical community regarding NDEs; Neal has adopted motivational speaking and writing about her experience as the method to familiarize the medical community and the general public with this phenomenon. Recurring Descriptions of a New World

In the majority of cases studied in depth, NDE survivors report certain recurring characteristics of their ‘cross over’ journeys: Beautiful vistas, water falls, green hills and towering mountains; the ‘people’ or ‘spirits’ encountered are universally described as loving, accepting and effusive in displaying their love and affection. Finally, pain, fear, disappointment and disillusion seem to be non-existent in an NDE. Put it all together and it becomes a vision of heaven, or perhaps I’ve read the wrong books. *** The voices of the 35-person choir lifted the ceiling rafters at the Southern Baptist Church in Hackensack, New Jersey that Sunday morning, July 17th. “Leaning, leaning, leaning on the ever-lasting arms of Christ, My King,” they sang. On July 9th at approximately 11:24 p.m. the Escondido Police and Fire Communication Center received a report of a vegetation fire at Rincon Avenue and Fawn Creek Rd on the west side of Daley Ranch. The first arriving engine confirmed a fire and attempted to gain access to a heavily vegetated area. A second alarm was requested due to the remote access, heavy vegetation and structures in close proximately to the fire. Escondido Police Department assisted with traffic control and road closures. By late afternoon the fire had been under control thanks to the efforst of Escondido Fire and CAL FIRE. which turned out (2) Escondido Brush units, (3) Cal Fire Brush units and (2) Cal Fire Hand Crews committed. In addition, Air Attack and one Cal Fire fixed wing tanker made a number of retardant drops on both flanks of the fire. Helicopters assisted with water drops.

There were no evacuations, no damage to structures and no Firefighters or civilians were injured.

This fire was determined to have been caused by the use of illegal fireworks. At this writing no estimate of costs incurred is available. Whether the parents of the teenagers using the illegal fireworks will be billed for the fire suppression costs is not yet known. Pair Robs Motel and Flees in Stolen Vehicle

Currently, (2016) Mary is in hospital having been transported by ambulance last Wednesday. She is due to be discharged tomorrow, against my wishes. I do not think she is ready to come home. I am requesting a second opinion and requesting a different psychiatrist for Mary. Totally disagree with the treatment she's receiving. Or not receiving. Sending her home now is inviting disaster. One of her diagnoses was "gravely ill." You don't send a gravely ill person home in four days time.

About a week ago I saw the top nutritionist at Kaiser. During our interview I briefed her fully. The reason for the referral was my blood sugars had been unusually high at night. (I'm a type II diabetic). She said, "I know the reason for your high blood sugar. It's stress. Caring for Mary has put a great deal of stress on you. The adrenaline flows. When the adrenaline flows all of your body organs get over-active, including your pancreas. Your blood sugars rocket high. We need to get you a couple days a week of respite care, let your body and mind relax a bit."

That comment hit me right in the heart, gut, and head. I immediately knew she was right. It all made sense. I was unaware of my stress till she pointed it out to me. It is very clearly there. We're working on it. Deep down, I'm not always the happy-go-lucky guy I

I've since seen several other home health care givers as well as several pastors who have counseled folks over the years. My close pal, Dick Huls, a retired pastor said . . . "of course you're under stress. Being a health care giver is one of the most stressful conditions you can work under."

Point of this conversation? If it comes to you to become a home health care giver . . . be aware of the demands made on you, physical demands . . . and mental demands. The forces working against you are very, very strong . . and must be dealt with.

Between publishing a newspaper each and every week, dealing with advertisers, deadlines, printing and/or computer problems . . . and caring for a dementia patient . . .it is a tremendous burden. Not sure I'm up to it .. . but we continue to try. •••• That was quite a hot spell we just went through; officially, we had a 107 degree day but my pal, realtor Donna Davis, emailed me that the temp in downtown Escondido was 111!  Our neighbors in Ramona got up to 117, as I recall. I grew up in the midwest where hot summers with heavy humidity were commonplace, so I’m used to hot weather . . . or at least I was at one time.

I’m thankful we don’t have the humidity so common in the midwest, south, and east coast. Dry heat is a bit more tolerable but it’s still hot.

I don’t use our pool all that often but believe me when I say it’s nice to have a pool when a heat wave hits. Many times I’d visit the pool, both day and night, have a cooling and refreshing swim and then return to work. Bless her heart, sweet Mary, my exwife, made up a pallet for me in my office so I could sleep there instead of our bedroom - which tends to be hot.

We don’t have whole house air conditoning (but I’m thinking about getting it) . . . but I have an air conditioning unit in my office and in our living room. So, for several nights I slept in my office, on my pallet, with the a/c on all night while Mary slept on the living room couch, also with the a/c on. (Mary normally has no problem sleeping in a warm bedroom but, given this heat wave, even she succumbed to the hot weather and opted to sleep in air conditioned comfort). I expect you and yours had similar stories to tell and will relish the chance to tell your kids, your grandkids, and various and sundry neighbors and friends how you managed to survive “back during the heat wave of 2018.”

I have a list of historical stories I can talk about having survived . . . several blizzards that hit Nebraska, a tornado that hit Omaha and almost demolished a house I owned there (while I lived in Chicago) and a huge blizzard around 1966 or 67, in Chicago, when the entire city was shut down. I can recall vividly the sight of neighbors going to grocery stores with a sled - not possible to drive. And the grocery stores shelves were mighty bare. Ah, memories!

Street Terminal and from there took the 167 bus through the Lincoln Tunnel across the George Washington Bridge into New Jersey. When the bus passed in front of Holy Angels Hospital in Teaneck, (I’d moved my wife and two daughters there from Missouri in January), I jerked the stop cord. Within minutes of entering the hospital I was admitted. Diagnosis: Bleeding Ulcer.

At 9:15 that evening, after my wife signed all the appropriate forms, I underwent four hours of surgery. Three fourths of my stomach was removed. However, while in Intensive Care, a bottle of blood was broken next to me – this was before blood was transported in plastic bags – and my bed pushed into the hall for cleanup. There I remained, an IV in my arm, tubes in my nose, unable to speak. Sheets were piled on me. An orderly, thinking my bed was empty, pushed me into a linen closet. For the next 44 hours my doctor searched frantically for me, as my wife haunted their every move, demanding they find me.

I can unequivocally state that as we lose our sense of touch and feel, when our sense of smell and taste leaves us, our ability to hear increases. To me imprisoned in that small closet, the ticking of the wall clock in the hallway sounded like a golfer hitting golf balls. When the

clock’s hands moved to mark the hour, I heard a pistol shot. A male RN whispered a proposition to a female nurse. Her murmured rejection, “Never, never, never,” was a death sentence to me. The click of a ball point pen, it’s rustle on a medical chart a clap of thunder. The Long Black Tunnel

As I lay there hour-after-hour, feeling small, cold and forgotten. I knew I was in trouble, that without help, I’d die. I heard the morning shift come on duty. I prayed to be found. I heard the afternoon shift report to work. My prayers were not answered. I found myself sliding into a long dark tunnel. To stop my descent into that black chute, I prayed that a certain registered nurse return to duty and rescue me. The tunnel seemed to last for miles. Subway trains roared by, large city buses shifted gears and rumbled past, shaking my surroundings; speeding cars and trucks, horns honking, motors revving, seemed to never stop. Then, I was on foot, wearing a blue suit, black shined shoes and a red neck tie. A swoosh of wind lifted me to the entrance to a large room. Before me stood a tall figure dressed in a gleaming white robe, a soft white light radiating a beautiful, peaceful glow. I looked down. Somehow, I knew if the light touched my feet, I’d cross over, never to return. The Big Decision

A hand, beautiful in every way, appeared. I heard a voice, a voice of passion and purpose and love, gentle, yet strong, in almost musical tones, say, “Go back. You’re much too young and have much yet to accomplish. Go home.” Reluctantly, I stepped back. Instantly, I was in my sheet-laden bed in the laundry closet at Holy Angels Hospital in Teaneck, NJ. The nurse I had prayed to find me had come to work on her day off to count sheets! Somehow, I communicated to her that I lived. How she responded or what she did, I don’t know, but I do know I died and lived to tell my story.

Five days later I was dismissed from the hospital. Other than an angry scar down my stomach I have no lingering effects of my ordeal. Or do I? *** That July Sunday in 1971, after the service ended at Hackensack Southern Baptist Church, holding my wife’s hand, my two daughters waiting just outside the pastor’s study, I shared a shortened version of my hospital ordeal with Reverend Miller. As I talked, he continually glanced at his watch. I didn’t tell him that as I lay there in the linen closet I reviewed my life up till then. What I saw did not a pretty picture make. I was a drunk, a terrible father, a worse husband. As a sales manager, I pushed for more - bigger numbers,

My wife and I looked at each other. Then, she picked up her purse, nodded to Rev. Miller and still holding my hand, led me from the pastor’s study. Outside, she said, “How dare him. Possessed of the devil? I think not. We’re good people. We came here to share a victory, and he accuses us of being evil.” *** It took me eighteen months to make good on my pledge to stop drinking,

Rev. Miller was neither thrilled nor pleased in hearing of my adventure. As I paused, he interrupted. “You obviously are possessed of the Devil. Evil spirits have entered your body and mind. and I needed help even then, but in the 47 years since that day in Hackensack, New Jersey, my life has been on a definite upswing. Both daughters are fearless, successful ladies with wonderful children and master’s degrees. My marriage to the lady who was with me that day ended; my ‘new’ wife of 37-plus years has given us a magnificent son, who is successful in every way. She is a warm and delightful help mate. I can say with good cheer that for the most part, I have followed my vow to never do something just for the money, and conversely, I do not refuse to do something that needs to be done for lack of money.

Scientific and anecdotal evidence proves Near-Death Experiences are real. They seem to occur more frequently to those who have lost their way, who seek help though they do not know this is the case. The final result is NDEs mold survivors in positive ways, leaving them changed and often healed in ways only the participant understands.

The Author, Pete Peterson

Editor’s Note: Pete’s cover story hits home with me. I also have experienced an OBE (Out of Body Experience): About 17-18 years ago I was having some angina (chest pain) and had been given nitroglycerin tablets to alleviate the pain. Problem is, I took two instead of one.

This slowed my heart down to the point that I collapsed while serving customers at Lyle’s at Dixon Lake, a business I owned for 27 years. Fortunately, Frank Schmitz, the then supervisor of Dixon Lake, came by the concession stand and saw that I was in distress and called 911.

I distinctly remember the ambulance picking me up; I was at that time semi-conscious. Then I remember being, like a fly, up on the ceiling of the ambulance, looking down and watching the paramedics working on me. I heard one of them saying, “we’re losing him. He’s flatlining!” The next thing I remember is waking up to see a very concerned doctor, with glasses, looking down at me. I was in the ER.

I was able to recover and was kept one day for observation and then released

I recall thinking, “dying isn’t all that bad. It was rather a pleasant feeling. I, from that point on, have not feared death. What I fear is the pain associated with illnesses or injuries that lead to dying.”

Federal Tax Credits for purchasing plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles haven’t moved the market as fast as expected. Only Tesla might hit it’s limit by the end of July. Next in line is G.M. offerings. Tesla is also making a bold move by building a manufacturing plant in China. Naturally, they are getting big time help from the Chinese.

Car Manufacturers around the world have committed to electric vehicles, but their source of power being batteries that need recharging and the limited driving range doesn’t appeal to everyone. I, for one, am not 100% sold on that’s what we should own. When they move to fuel cells it could be a whole new ball game. More technology may be just around the corner or a few years down the road.

Failure is not necessarily a negative word. More car companies have failed than those that have succeeded . So it goes with various models of vehicles. This week’s mystery car is my favorite failure. It was powered by a different type of engine that was silky smooth, light in weight, very simple and very fast . It had a very fast power band that could go up to 7000 RPMs in the blink of the eye. The engine was invented by Felix Wankel, a German genius and called the Wankel Rotary Engine. It was so unique with only three moving parts. In 1967 a Japanese car company brought this change of power to the market in the form of a cute coupe with amazingly quick performance. The car received bad raps for being thirsty, during a gas crisis and the apex rotary seal on the end of the triangle firing device showed premature wear. Engine size was 982 cc developing a 110 hp. from a twin rotary engine. The company hand crafted only one car a day. Do you remember?

California’s Economic Prosperity

(760) 747-7119

Though California is the world’s 5th largest economy, we must expand economic prosperity. With over 20% of our population living below the poverty line, we have the nation’s highest poverty rate. Our skilled labor shortage means that high-paying jobs often go unfilled and our job creation infrastructure, including career tech education, is lacking.

Bi-partisan legislation, Assembly Bill 2596, will require the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GoBiz) to produce an Economic Development Strategic Action Plan for California by January 10, 2020.

Obviously, top-down economic planning doesn’t work. Any economic development plan for a state as large and diverse as California must be tailored to fit vastly different regions to stimulate statewide and regional economic growth while preserving local control and community character. For that reason, AB 2596 requires input from the general public, stakeholders and policymakers to identify dominant and emerging industry sectors, regionally and throughout California. The leading economic sectors in North San Diego County include the life sciences, innovation industry, including hightech, engineering, research and manufacturing, the military, tourism, educa-

tion, agriculture and more.

By creating a diversified plan with a prioritized list of short and long-term economic goals, California will create increased opportunities for business development and expansion that will generate high-paying jobs, increase overall prosperity, and reduce the unacceptable number of people living in poverty. Of course burdensome regulations, taxes and fees must be reduced to make us competitive as a state. Training an innovative and skilled workforce must also be a priority. I’m happy to report AB 2596 passed the Assembly in a unanimous vote on May 31st. If enacted, California will join a growing list of states creating economic development plans and taking concrete steps to stimulate their economies and ensure prosperity for their citizens. Minority Floor Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

ing was excellent, whereas that of the British was poor, due to the overwhelming patriot loyalty of the populace in the Williamsburg area.

‘The Fox’ Had The British On The Run

During the Revolutionary War, the British were perplexed and confused by a new style of combat: guerilla warfare. At the heart of what the British called “ungentlemanly” combat was South Carolinian farmer-turned-military officer Francis Marion.

In November 1780, the British had their own “head-hunter” in Col. Banastre Tarleton, who was sent to capture or kill Marion; Tarleton found it no easy task in finding the "old swamp fox." Marion eluded him by traveling along swamp paths. It was Tarleton who gave Marion the moniker when, after unsuccessfully pursuing Marion's troops for over 26 miles through a swamp. Tarleton gave up and swore "… as for this damned old fox, the Devil himself could not catch him."

Once Marion had shown his ability at guerrilla warfare, making himself a serious nuisance to the British, South Carolina Gov. John Rutledge commissioned him a brigadier general of his state’s militia. Serving with the Continental Army as a South Carolina militia officer, he was a persistent adversary of the British in South Carolina. He is considered the father of modern guerrilla warfare, and is credited in the lineage of the United States Army Rangers. He is known in history as the “Swamp Fox.”

In 1775, Marion was commissioned a captain in the 2nd South Carolina Regiment under the command of William Moultrie. He rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Marion became known for his leadership abilities and was sent to join the command of Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates just before the Battle of Camden. Gates was less than impressed and promptly sent Marion to take command of the Williamsburg militia in Virginia. Thinking Marion would be kept out of the way, Gates assigned him to scouting missions. Marion showed himself to be an able leader of irregular militiamen and ruthless tactics in terrorizing of British loyalists. Unlike George Washington’s Continental troops, “Marion's Men,” as they were known, served without pay, supplied their own horses, arms and often their food.

Marion rarely committed his men to a frontal attack style of warfare, but repeatedly surprised larger bodies of Loyalists or British regulars with quick surprise attacks and equally quick withdrawal from the field. In other words, his tactics were ambush-style “hit and run” encounter, which were befuddling to the British, often causing their ranks to break and troops fleeing.

The British especially hated Marion and made repeated efforts to neutralize his force, but Marion's intelligence-gather-

In January 1782, left the fighting when he was elected to a new South Carolina State Assembly. Later that year, the British withdrew their garrison from Charleston and the war was brought to an end by the Treaty of Paris.

Marion is one of those characters in history who is surrounded by controversy. Many of his exploits have been exaggerated. His legend was helped along by a popular 1959 Walt Disney TV series, “The Swamp Fox,” starring Leslie Nielsen. In 2000, actor Mel Gibson starred in “The Patriot,” whose character was based on Marion’s legend. No doubt some future writer will come up with another scenario to bring back to life the “Swamp Fox.” As I recently quoted legendary film director John Ford when discussing historical movie subjects, the legend of “The Swamp Fox” is a perfect example of what he was talking about: “If given the choice between filming truth or legend, choose the legend, it’s always more interesting.”

Gala in the Garden Honoring Julian Duval at S.D. Botanic Garden – On Saturday, September 8th, at the 19th Annual Gala in the Garden of the San Diego Botanic Garden, they will honor Julian Duval, President/CEO for his 24-year tenure there. The theme of the Gala this year is “Inspiring the Nature Within Us.” The event will run from 5-11pm. Julian Duval will be honored with this year’s Paul Ecke, Jr. Award. He was selected in recognition of his horticultural contributions through his service in leading the Garden over the past 24 years. Given the many ways he has elevated SDBG both regionally and internationally through his leadership, this is a fitting tribute. Duval will be heading into

his well-earned retirement in January 2019. Duval shared, “It is hard to believe that 24 years have gone by so quickly! Leslie and I are so grateful for the many friendships we have developed during our time here. SDBG has truly become the public garden that is today because of the dedication of our amazing volunteers, members and caring donors. I am very humbled to be chosen as a recipient for this year’s Paul Ecke, Jr. Award, considering the many impressive individuals we have honored thus far. I hope you will choose to come to our Gala because what makes it so special is that it is outside in this beautiful place. And, of course, we just know how to throw a very fun party with plenty of entertainment, food and libations! Always, with a few surprises too. People often tell me it is the one Gala they cannot miss each year!” The annual Gala in the Garden provides the necessary funding to support this Encinitas public garden, helping to fulfill its mission of inspiring people of all ages to connect with plants and nature. While exploring various gardens, guests will enjoy fine wine, craft beer, signature cocktails and the best dishes from local restaurants as well as live entertainment (five bands!) throughout. In addition, renowned florist and Gala Artistic Director René van Rems will once again lead a team of local floral designers to create lavish floral displays for the evening. 40,000 Persons Sign Museum Guest Book - The Valley Center History Museum reached an important milestone recently when a guest from Riverside County became the 40,000th person to sign the museum's visitor guest book. Earl Brown, who has served as president of the museum for the past eight years, was quick to point out that the 40,000 figure represents only those who voluntarily signed a guest book, often leaving a comment, and that the actual number of visitors may be double that number -- perhaps 80,000 or more. Brown further pointed out that the number excludes children and youth tour groups such as the 75 elementary school children who toured the museum last month. "Nevertheless," he stated, "this is an impressive number for a small museum located in a rural community." Opened in 2003, the History Museum has attracted visitors from each of the 50 states and 44 foreign lands, most recently Denmark, Peru, Singapore, and Morocco. paign also launched an anonymous tip website at www.GasTaxWasteWatcher.com. “The waste and abuse of taxpayer funds in state and local transportation agencies is staggering,” said Carl DeMaio, Chairman of Reform California – Yes on Prop 6. “While Sacramento politicians are raising the costof-living for taxpayers with the massive gas and car tax hikes, they are turning a blind eye to the wasteful spending in CALTRANS and local transportation programs,” DeMaio continued. “We encourage principled whistleblowers with knowledge of waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer funds at CALTRANS or local transportation programs to step forward and anonymously tell us what they know at www.GasTaxWasteWatcher.com,” DeMaio urged. The tips received from several whistleblowers prompted the Yes on Prop 6 campaign to demand release of the following records from 16 separate agencies covering more than two-dozen data sets including: Payroll, Compensation and Pension Payouts: All salary, base pay, overtime pay and total compensation data for current employees as well as aggregate pension payouts for retired employees. Illegal Campaign Expenditures: All emails, contracts, records and expenditures relating to public relations, community outreach, public affairs, advertising, public education, polling or public opinion research, media outreach, op-ed writing, or any other communications services related to planned, active, or completed transportation projects, general operations of the agency, or SB1. In addition, records are being sought on hundreds of SB-1/Your Gas Tax Dollars At Work signs being placed throughout the state with a reported cost of $700-1500 per sign. Questionable Expenses: All expenditures related to travel, alcohol consumption by employees, vehicle purchases and use, and furniture and decorating expenses. Real Estate Transactions: Copies of all transactions and holdings related to commercial, retail, residential, or vacant land held by various transportation agencies.

spending during the Fall campaign. “The Gas and Car tax hikes will cost the typical family of four $700 more per year in higher taxes, but the roads will not get fixed because the politicians will continue to divert the funds and waste the funds as they always have in the past,” concluded DeMaio. More information at www.GasTaxRepeal.org. Facts about this massive hike: -On Nov 1, 2017, Californians became subject to an additional tax of 12.5 cents more per gallon (20 cents more for diesel) -Estimates suggest it will cost $700 or more per family, per year –The tax also hits business owners who rely on transporting goods, raising the cost of everything from apples to Zinfindel -Auto registration fees will increase as much as $175 a year - striking the wallets of hardworking families across the state -The tax revenue goes into the state's General Fund, meaning there's zero guarantee the money will be used to actually fund the transportation "fixes" they claim will happen -Nearly 1 million signatures were collected to qualify the measure on the November ballot; just over 550,000 were required.

The Pastor Says . . .

Pastor Sam Brumit Mission 316, San Marcos

If I were the devil . . .

Though attributed to the late Paul Harvey, it didn’t actually originate with him. Nevertheless, this piece, “If I were the devil” still makes me stop and think today. If I were the devil . . .

I would delude their minds into thinking that they had come from man’s effort, instead of God’s blessings; I would promote an attitude of loving things and using people, instead of the other way around; I would dupe entire states into relying on gambling for their state revenue; I would convince people that character is not an issue when it comes to leadership; I would make it legal

to take the life of unborn babies; I would make it socially acceptable to take one’s own life, and invent machines to make it convenient; I would cheapen human life as much as possible so that the life of animals are valued more than human beings; I would take God out of the schools, where even the mention of His name was grounds for a lawsuit; I would come up with drugs that sedate the mind and target the young, and I would get sports heroes to advertise them; I would get control of the media, so that every night I could pollute the mind of every family member for my agenda; I would attack the family, the backbone of any nation. I would make divorce acceptable and easy, even fashionable. If the family crumbles, so does the nation; I would compel people to express their most depraved fantasies on canvas and movie screens, and I would call it art; I would persuade people that the church is irrelevant and out of date, and the Bible is for the naïve. I would dull the minds of Christians, and make them believe that prayer is not important, and obedience optional. One of Paul Harvey’s actual versions is found at https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=QGrWvrGDOXg

San Marcos helps businesse s secure more than $500K in tax credits

The City of San Marcos helped two San Marcos businesses secure more than $500,000 in state income tax credits, allowing them to collectively create nearly 30 local jobs.

The Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) awarded a $446,700 California Competes Tax Credit (CCTC) to x-ray machine company Creative Electron and a $100,000 CCTC to Quick Charge Power, which makes charging equipment for electrical vehicles. These companies are exempt from paying state income taxes in the amount awarded—an incentive to help them grow

their operations with its savings, Creative Electron will hire 22 employees over the next four years and Quick Charge Power plans to hire another seven.

We contribute a $7.9 billion annual GDP to the regional economy, largely thanks to leading companies like Creative Electron and Quick Charge Power and the CCTC awards underscore the fact that San Marcos is a community worth investing in—even when considered at a regional or state level. Moonlight’s Season in High Gear

The Moonlight Summer Season’s second production kicked off July 18 with Disney’s Newsies. This production is a high energy explosion of song and dance based on the popular 1992 film which became a Broadway musical in 2012. It is based on a true story of the Newsboy strike in 1899, when a bunch of rag tag orphans took on the mighty Joe Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, nearly bringing down the city of New York. The musical features many of the beloved songs from the movie while introducing eight new songs and runs through August 4.

A.A.A.D.D.- KNOW THE SYMPTOMS!

Thank goodness there's a name for this disorder. Age-ActivatedAttention Deficit Disorder. This is how it manifests:

I decide to water my garden. As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide it needs washing. As I start toward the garage, I notice mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier. I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car. I lay my car keys on the table, put the junk mail in the garbage can under the table, and notice that the can is full. So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the garbage first... but then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.

and service members to organizations, programs, and opportunities that they may not have known about before.

The event is open to the general public and will be held Thursday, July 26, 2018, 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM at the Veterans Association of North County, 1617 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA 92058.

I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, So I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of Pepsi I'd been drinking. I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the Pepsi aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. The Pepsi is getting warm, and I decide to put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold. As I head toward the kitchen with the Pepsi, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye--they need water. I put the Pepsi on the counter and discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning. I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers. I set the glasses back down on the counter, fill a container with water and suddenly spot the TV remote. Someone left it on the kitchen table. I realize that tonight when we go to watch TV, I'll be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the den where it belongs; but first I'll water the flowers. I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill. Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.

How about technology, convenience and safety features and what about fuel economy. Fortunately when facing the same decision with notebook and desktop PCs, it’s a “no brainer.” “Refurbs” (used) PCs win hands down. The palace meteorologist assured him that there was no chance of rain. So the king and the queen went fishing. On the way he met a man with a fishing pole riding on a donkey, and he asked the man if the fish were biting.

The fisherman said, "Your Majesty, you should return to the palace! In just a short time I expect a huge rain storm."

The king replied: "I hold the palace meteorologist in high regard. He is an educated and experienced professional. Besides, I pay him very high wages. He gave me a very different forecast. I trust him." So the king continued on his way.

However, in a short time a torrential

In 1965 Gordon Moore of Intel formulated “Moore’s Law.” It stated that technology would double the speed and power of computer components every eighteen months. Moore’s Law drove PC industry growth from the 1980s through 2010 but while technology continued to double the speed and power of computer chips at Moore’s predicted pace, Moore’s Law was no longer a significant factor in PC technology. An analogy can be drawn in the development of automobiles. Fifty years ago a new standard stock Chevy V8 sedan could seat six, had a top end of 120 MPH, a life span of about 100,000 miles and cost $2500. Today a new stock standard Chevy V8 sedan seats six, has a top speed of 130MPH, a life span of 200,000 miles and costs $30,000. Chevy could have developed a sedan that seats 50 people, a top speed of 600 MPH, a million mile life span and a price tag of $4 million. The technology was available but nobody needed it. It is the same with personal computers.

In 2010 a Dell or HP PC with an Intel (i7-2600K) had a speed rating of 8500 (Passmark benchmark speed rating). That is faster than the CPU in most new retail PCs today. Those eight year old Dells and HPs had 1.0 TB hard drives,

rain fell from the sky. The King and Queen were totally soaked.

Furious, the king returned to the palace and gave the order to fire the meteorologist. Then he summoned the fisherman and offered him the prestigious position of royal forecaster. The fisherman said, "Your Majesty, I do not know anything about forecasting. I obtain my information from my donkey. If I see my donkey's ears drooping, it means with certainty that it will rain." So the king hired the donkey.

And thus began the practice of hiring dumb asses to work in influential positions of government. The practice is unbroken to this date. God Loves Drunks Too

32GB RAM, video and sound capabilities for streaming content and a DVD-R/W. PC hardware technology has been unable to significantly advance the functionality of PCs in the past eight years. The speed and capabilities of older PCs can be at least equal to those of new PCs. The quality and reliability of refurbished “commercial” or “corporate” PCs is markedly superior to that of new “retail” models. The reason is that the specifications for “corporate” PCs are developed by professional ITs (Information Technologists) with the emphasis on quality, reliability and three year warranty. Retail PCs are built with a one year warranty for users who know little about quality, performance or reliability, these PC are made for “price” shoppers.

"Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down, and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and you should be ashamed of yourself! “God loves drunk people too you know.”

The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?" "Yes," comes back the answer.

"Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband.

"Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark. "Where are you?" asks the husband.

"Over here on the swing," replied the drunk..
