1980s were many things, but one thing was for certain – the ‘70s and ‘80s were anything but boring!”

The 1970s and 1980s covered a wide spectrum of events, from the ending of the Vietnam War in 1975 to the stock market crash (known as Black Monday) in 1980, which impacted stock markets around the world.

But the 1970s and 1980s in America were not without their highlights in the social, political, and technological arenas. The 1970s saw the beginnings of the modern personal

home computer, the voting age would be lowered from 21 to 18, and America led the world in recreational pursuits with the opening of Walt Disney World at Orlando, Florida.

In sports, the 1980s decade would witness the opening ceremonies of the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, New York, followed 4 years later with the 1984 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles, California.

In politics and law, Sandra Day O’Conner becomes the first woman in history to serve on the U. S.

Supreme Court.

LET’S BEGIN OUR JOURNEY! Let us now climb onboard our imaginary time machine and set the dials for the 1970s and 1980s and glimpse in our rearview mirror what life was like back then!

Baby Boomers may find it difficult to believe that the year 1970 was almost half-a-century ago – 48 years to be exact! Here’s your first multiple-choice question.

WHAT WAS THE AVERAGE YEARLY INCOME IN 1970?

A. Over $2,000 a year B. Over $6,000 a year C. Over $20,000 a year

Well, according to the official Social Security National Average Wage Index, the correct answer is “B” over $6,000 (or to be more precise: $6,186.24) being the average national income for one person (not household income) in 1970, which is equivalent to $40,113.30 in 2018.

In 1970, a new house would cost you (on average) $23,400 which is equivalent to $151,732.11 today.

Average cost of a new car was $3,450 with gas selling for 36-cents a gallon, which is about $2.33 per gallon today.

Minimum hourly wage was $1.45 (beginning in February, 1970) which is $9.40 in today’s dollars.

By the way, the average movie ticket was $1.55 which would be equal to $10.05 in 2018.

One of the most amusing and strangest streaking episodes occurred “live” on global television in front of one of the largest audiences numbering in the hundreds of millions! It happened in 1974 during the Oscars (Academy Awards) ceremonies at Hollywood, California, when English actor and co-host, David Niven, was about to introduce Elizabeth Taylor, only to be interrupted by a long-haired, mustached, totally-naked man running across the stage flashing the peace sign, before a shocked global audience, all watching in disbelief, via satellite! David Niven would quip: “Well, ladies and gentlemen, that was almost bound to happen!

But isn’t it fascinating to think that probably the only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping off and showing his shortcomings?”

Kids in the Garden Class "WATER, WATER, EVERYWHERE" - The program for the August 11th Kids in the Garden Class at Alta Vista Botanical Gardens will be “Water, Water, Everywhere!” Learn about how we use, how we can conserve/save it, and how we can have fun playing with it.

The correct answer is “C” for Pet Rock!

One of the most unusual marketing items ever conceived was the Pet Rock, which made its debut in the national marketing arena in 1975.

The Pet Rock was exactly that – a simple rock, with a face (usually two eyes and a smile) attached to it!

In essence, the Pet Rocks were smooth stones gathered from Mexico’s Rosarito Beach and then marketed as if they were “live” pets, in custom cardboard boxes, complete with straw and breathing holes!

The marketing scheme was called one of the boldest and most unexpected success stories, simply because of the simplicity of the item sold – a mere rock!

The idea for the Pet Rock first emerged in April of 1975 in a bar at Santa Cruz, California. It was there where Gary Dahl, an advertising copywriter, sat barside in Bonny Doon and listened to his friends complain about their pets! Dahl’s seemingly crazy idea of a pet rock being the perfect pet because it would not need to be fed, walked, bathed, or groomed, all caused his friends to laugh uncontrollably!

Little did they know at the time that Gary Dahl was ‘test marketing’ his crazy idea in front of his friends, all of whom could not stop joking about the concept of a pet rock!

Dahl’s biggest expense was the diecutting and manufacturing of the

The Pet Rock came with a funny 32-page official training manual titled: “The Care and Training of Your Pet Rock.” The instruction manual, unexpectedly, became the real product, full of silly puns, gags, and jokes! Among other things, the hilarious training manual included teaching your Pet Rock simple commands, such as “sit” and “stay.” Teaching the Pet Rock to “roll over” required hilarious additional physical help.

Although the whole Pet Rock concept was called “stupid,” and “senseless” and “completely crazy,” such negative comments from critics, ironically, only drove publicity higher across the United States, spiking interest, all of which made Pet Rock sales shoot skyward!

Despite his critics, Gary Dahl would laugh all the way to the bank!

In short, the Pet Rock phenomenon made its creator, Gary Dahl, a multi-millionaire within a short span of only 6 months!

In the entire history of modern toy and novelty items, few were as bold and simplistic and unexpected as the lucrative Pet Rock marketing concept! Even marbles and hula hoops were more physically engaging than a simple rock for a pet!

History Museum Looking for Canadians - Having attracted visitors from each of the 50 U.S. states, the Valley Center History Museum is now turning its sights to Canada and seeks to have tourists from each of the 10 Canadian provinces sign its guest book.

History Museum president William Boyett said it took only a few years to welcome visitors from 49 of the American states, but it took a dozen years to greet guests from North Dakota. That occurred in 2014, thanks to widespread publicity locally and in the "Peace Garden" state. The publicity paid off; within a few months, 17 North Dakotans had found their way to Valley Center, visited the museum and signed its guest book.

Boyett said he hopes the Canadian search won't take as long, and pointed out that the History Museum already has found visitors from several provinces. A quick search last week by docents uncovered signatures and comments from visitors living in British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Quebec, and Ontario. There also was an entry from Yukon, one of three territories of Canada.

The remaining provinces are New Brunswick, Newfoundland & Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Saskatchewan. Once the Canadian search is completed, said Boyett, the museum will turn its attention to the south and try to reach potential visitors from Mexico with its 31 states and the Federal district of Mexico City.

The History Museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road, Valley Center, is open Tuesday through Saturday from 12noon to 4pm.

On July 21, 2018, at 9:50 p.m., officers from the Carlsbad Police Department responded to the 4600 hundred block of El Camino Real after the dispatch center received reports of a vehicle that struck a pedestrian. Arriving police officers found a non-responsive 30 year-old male lying in the roadway.

The male sustained very serious injuries after being struck by a vehicle. The Carlsbad Fire Department responded and transported the male to Palomar hospital where he is being treated.

The driver of the vehicle that hit the pedestrian remained at the scene and was interviewed by traffic officers who responded to conduct a full investigation. The investigation remains ongoing.

Safari Highlands Ranch Update

The controversial proposal to build a gated community of 550 luxury homes on mountainous land north of the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park, the largest housing development proposed for Escondido in decades, awaits review by the public and then city of Escondido officials.

More than 800 pages of comments

concerning the draft environmental report put out last year still awaits study and response by the city..

The project would be built on roughly 400 acres of a 1,098-acre site near the Safari Animal Park.

The project could come before the Planning Commission and then the City Council before the end of this year.

Issues surrounding the project cover a wide spectrum including fire safety, traffic, schools, biological resources, density, steep slopes, and cultural resources.

“Safari Highlands will actually improve public safety,” the developer said. “We’ll build a fire station, add emergency access roads, and increase fuel modification zones around the project. In addition, we will preserve more than 700 acres of open space and include nine miles of new public trails for the community.”

A well-organized opposition group, the nonprofit San Pasqual Valley Preservation Alliance, has been fighting the project for several years. The group is composed mainly of residents of Rancho San Pasqual and Rancho Vista Monte,

A memory from six yeas ago:

Went to a wedding today. A hundred years ago I founded a youth diversity group, "Los Caballeros de Aventura," (The Gentlemen of Adventure). It was designed to keep kids so busy enjoying life they would have neither the time nor inclination to join gangs. It was a brilliant success. Not one of my kids (out of about 2500 over the six year period we ran the operation) ever got in trouble with the law nor joined a gang. One of those kids, one of four brothers, contacted me a couple months ago, inviting me to his wedding. He has four kids . . . but, being Hispanic, their culture sometimes do things a bit differently (with my full blessing). He even hand delivered the invitation to us about a week ago. (I have often counseled couples to live together for at least a year before getting

I had never been to a Spanish wedding before. It was absolutely beautiful. The singers, the musicians, even the service itself, was magnificent. I speak halfway decent 'gringo Spanish' so was only able to understand about 30-40% of the words . . . but it was still beautiful. When it came to the point where they exchanged their vows, damned if my eyes didn't fill with tears. That had never happened before. I must be getting old and sentimental.

Joel and Lilliana are now married . . . and, poor Joel, he laid out a ton of money for the event . . . everyone decked out in finery, limousine, catered reception . . . all first cabin. An absolutely great family. You're not supposed to have favorites when dealing with youth associations, but the Morales family was one of my two favorite families. Loved all the kids . . . but these two families were special.

Very proud of them.

Evelyn and I retired from Los Caballeros after six years. Decided to let others continue saving the world. I still see some of the "kids" from time to time . . . usually, they'll walk up to me, greet me with . . . "Hi, Mr. Davis. I'm Humberto. Remember me? I'd like you to meet my wife and two kids." I look at Evelyn and we both think at the same time, "we did something right!" These kids have all turned out just fine and

two housing projects directly west of the Safari Highlands site. They have been joined by a host of environmental groups that consider the project to be an example of urban sprawl planned for sensitive habitat they feel would be best left untouched.

The developer is asking the city to annex the land into Escondido, a process that began a couple years ago and will eventually have to go before the county’s Local Agency Formation Commission for approval.

A majority of the Escondido City Council has expressed a desire for the construction of high-end housing in the city. By repeated 4-1 votes, they have approved the ongoing development plans without committing to a final decision.

Councilwoman Olga Diaz, however, has made it clear from the beginning she opposes Safari Highlands and will never vote to approve the project, which she believes is inappropriate for the area.

The average selling price of a Safari Highlands home will be about $1 million, with some on larger lots going for more. have made Evelyn and me very proud.

WHO WAS AMERICA’S FIRST WOMAN SPACE ASTRONAUT IN 1983?

On June 18, 1983, Sally Kirsten Ride made history when she became the first American woman astronaut launched into space onboard the space shuttle Challenger! The following year, on Oct. 5, 1984, Sally Ride made history again when she became the first American woman to orbit the Earth a second time!

For the record, the Soviet Union sent the world’s first woman into space over 20 years prior to Sally Ride’s historic trip when they launched Russian cosmonaut, Valentina Tereshkova, into orbit on June 6, 1963. Sally became the darling to generations of children around the world who read her children’s books, all written and devoted for their young minds! She became an international role model with her space-exploration children’s books written in simple language, and complete with pictures, for young kids to easily understand and be truly inspired! In this regard, Sally Ride became a world pioneer on different levels, leading the way to help prove how women can become true leaders in all fields of endeavor, not just space!

Astronaut and holder of both a Master’s Degree and a Ph. D degree in physics, Dr. Sally Ride, died of pancreatic cancer in 2012, at age 62, in La Jolla, California.

FAST FACTS. Astronauts orbit the Earth at a fantastic speed of 17,500 mph! Yet, technically, all human beings travel a lot faster than that! How is that possible?

Well, in actual fact, our planet Earth orbits our Sun (carrying all of us as passengers) at an orbital speed of 67,000 mph around the Sun!

That is why our Earth is often, colloquially – and accurately -referred to as “Spaceship Earth” because it, literally, carries all of us Earthly inhabitants as it rotates at 1,000 mph while revolving (orbiting) the Sun at 67,000 mph!

IN 1982 WHAT WAS TIME MAGAZINE’S FIRST NON-HUMAN “PERSON OF THE YEAR”?

Without question, this was a shocker! But, if you chose “C” the personal computer, well, you’re plugged into the facts! From Time Magazine’s first “Person of the Year” in 1927, with aviator Charles Lindbergh on the cover, it wasn’t until 1982 that Time Magazine broke all tradition by selecting the computer as their “Person of the Year” or in this case “Machine of the Year” for their cover, which is normally reserved for human beings only!

Steve Jobs, CEO and co-founder of Apple, Inc. had come to believe that his face would be on the cover as “Person of the Year,” so when a greatly disappointed Steve Jobs first saw the unexpected cover of a personal computer – he literally broke down crying!

In Walter Isaacson’s excellent book “Steve Jobs,” biographer, Isaacson, chronicles this emotional event.

However, according to Ray Cave, Time Magazine’s managing editor, at the time: “We never considered Jobs as cover selection (for 1982 Person of the Year).”

Unfortunately, nobody bothered to tell Steve Jobs.

Steve Jobs had already been on the 1982 front cover for Time Magazine but not as “Person of the Year” honors, a rare cover achievement which is bestowed at the end of every year.

What Kind of Vehicle should you drive? If you are in the market for a new or late model used car, safety should be at the top of your list.

If you need proof, take a gander at the traffic, especially here is Southern California. Two must items at the top of my list are SBZA, which stands for Side Blind Zone Alert. The side mirrors have warning markers that cover both sides of the vehicle—excellent when changing lanes and also for parallel parking. Second you need a back- up camera that gives you a picture of what’s behind you. Over 40% of accidents are backing accidents. Buy yourself some safety. You’ll be glad you did! These two items are standard equipment on most new vehicles.

Don’t be left out.

The epitome of failure was taken on by this marquee. When we think of this car it is in a negative way. However, this car was no worse or no better than its competitors. But was the victim of a disappearing medium price segment of the car market. Introduced in September of 1957 as a 1958 model, it entered the arena with DeSoto, Dodge, Mercury, Buick. Olds, and Pontiac. Medium price cars at that time controlled 50% of the cars sold. In the next two years this market shrunk to less than 20%. Failed models included Ranger, Pacer, Citation, and Corsair. It was built for two complete model years and a touch of a third year. They announced the stop of production the day the 1960 model was introduced. An inside story that I was part of. My father gave up his Pontiac franchise to take on this car, as did a number of other successful dealers of other well- known brands in South Dakota. Because of this, “the failure” had its highest sales penetration, percentage wise, in South Dakota of all the states in the Union.

Name this failed brand with the distinctive brand with its horse collar grill.

So can you live on 55 gallons of water a day?

No one can.

Legislation just enacted broadens authority of the State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB), an unelected, unaccountable board. The new mandates establish an indoor water use budget of 55 gallons/day for all Californians until 2025, reduced to 50 gallons/day after 2030. Civil penalties apply to water districts that are unable to meet the new guidelines.

I opposed both SB606 and AB1668 which created these regulations.

Arant, General Manager of the Valley Center Municipal Water District, water consumption in Valley Center has already decreased 59% since 2007, yet the new regulations require even deeper cuts. Upfront costs to implement the new measures could be as high as $6 million, with an additional $1.6 million spent annually in labor and administrative costs. This represents an ongoing 15% increase in VCMWD’s operating budget, costs that will be passed along in customer’s water bills. Similar costs will affect most water districts.

Here’s just one example of why one-size-fits-all water policies don’t work. According to Gary

Water mismanagement

It’s all so unnecessary. San Diego County has largely divorced itself from Northern California water – over the last 5 years 72% of our water has come from the Colorado River, another 15% from local sources, including reclamation and desalination. Unfortunately, the state’s new mandates will discourage local conservation efforts. Why have we spent so much on water conservation if we still suffer the same penalties and restrictions as other regions that have made little effort to conserve?

Our water problems are the result of political decisions that have prevented construction of additional storage reservoirs. I am working on bi-partisan legislation to increase access to reclaimed water for agriculture and increase water storage in our state and region.

Anyone who has studied 1930s history, especially English history, knows that King Edward VIII abdicated his crown for “… the woman I love.” What wasn’t known until recently is the push out the royal door brought about by Cosmo Gordon Lang, the Archbishop of Canterbury, head cleric of the Church of England.

The matter became public knowledge on Dec. 2, 1936 when the Bishop of Bradford made an indirect comment on the king's "need for Divine Grace.” By then the staunch opposition by the Church and Parliament the king had unalterably decided he would abdicate rather than give up Wallis Simpson. All attempts to dissuade him failed, and on Dec. 11, he gave up his throne in favor of his brother, George VI. Two days later Lang broadcast a speech, in which he said: "From God he received a high and sacred trust. Yet by his own will he has ... surrendered the trust."

Lang did not disguise his relief that the crisis was over. He wrote of George VI: "I was now sure that to the solemn words of the Coronation there would now be a sincere response." On May 12, 1937, Lang crowned Edward’s brother, George VI with full pomp and ceremony in Westminster Abbey.

Time magazine recorded: "… All through the three-hour ceremony, the most important person there was not the King, his nobles or his ministers, but a hawk-nosed old gentleman with a cream and gold cape who stood on a dais as King George approached: The Rt. Hon. and Most Reverend Cosmo Gordon Lang, D.D. Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Primate of All England." Supposedly the archbishop fumbled with the Crown but Lang himself was fully satisfied.”

Years later, it was revealed that Lang had placed the crown on George’s head backwards.

This closeness to the throne was not maintained when George V died in January 1936 and was succeeded by his son, Edward VIII. The new king was wary of Lang, whom he had once admired.

Lang believed that, as Prince of Wales, Edward had not always been wise in his choice of friends and acquaintances, whose standards Lang was later to condemn as "alien to all the best instincts and traditions of his people.” The archbishop had been aware for some time of the king's relationship with the American Wallis Simpson, then married to her second husband Ernest Simpson.

In mid-1936 it became clear Edward intended to marry Simpson either before or shortly after his impending coronation, depending on the timing of her divorce from her husband. It would be unthinkable to have a divorcee, especially an American, sit on the throne as Queen.

Lang agonized over whether he could, with good conscience, administer the Coronation Oath to the king in such circumstances, bearing in mind the Church's teaching on marriage. Lang confided to his recently opened diary his hopes that circumstances might change, or that he might be able to persuade the king to reconsider his actions, but the king refused to meet with him.

Lang kept close contact with the king's mother, Queen Mary, Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin, and the king's private secretary. Edward believed Lang's influence was strong, later recalling how from beginning to end he felt the archbishop's "shadowy, hovering presence" in the background.

Up until recently it wasn’t known just how much influence Lang had in causing Edward to abdicate his crown.

Lang’s private diary was discovered detailing how he and then Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin more or less colluded in forcing Edward to step down off the throne. Ironically, today, divorce no longer matters as Queen Elizabeth’s sister, Margaret, her children all have divorced. What ruined Edward VIII, today is merely a blip in the pages of history.

Yard work is not my favorite outdoor activity. It isn’t a place I expect to learn anything, especially something spiritual. Still, in the middle of hedge trimming, I found a lesson from God. The new growth on our hedges is brighter green than the rest of the hedge. I like the color. It seems more alive than the old growth of the established hedge. Yet, to comply with HOA rules, keeping the hedges neatly trimmed, it is this new growth that gets cut off and tossed out.

A neighbor has vines instead of hedges. Vines grow differently.

They spread out, keep growing and somehow stay in compliance with

I guess that is why there isn’t a verse where Jesus says, “I am the hedge,” but he does say in John 15, “I am the vine, you are the branches.”

Jesus did not see the church as a hedge, constantly needing trimming and being confined to some predetermined size and shape that prevented new growth.

Rather, he saw the church as a vine, with a strong supporting core and growth that branches out into new areas and explores new opportunities.

The church is a vine. It will always grow, even if we have to build bigger arbors, and it will always find its strength in the central trunk, which is Jesus Christ.

The beginning of the end came in the 1960s as mass merchandisers and shopping centers began to spread across the country. Family owned businesses from clothing to hardware were squeezed out by more efficient mass-merchandisers and franchises.

Restaurant chains like IHOP and Mac Donald’s supplied their operations from centrally located “commissaries” and fleets of freezer trucks eliminated the need for local food growers and processors. As corporate retail grew through the efficiencies of scale and vertical integration, margins shrunk, small business could not compete. Uncle Max, Jack and Kohler are long gone now, but if they were alive today they wouldn’t be very happy about their chances of getting a deal. The difference between wholesale and retail pricing has all but disappeared.

Until recently we (The Computer Factory) relied on “wholesale distributors” for our computer components. These dealers served businesses only. Slowly the difference in retail and wholesale pricing has shrunk. In the past two years we’ve bought almost nothing from the “wholesale distributors” we once used. Today we buy nearly everything on the Internet. In most cases we are paying about the same prices
