By Jim Winnerman

An expansive, semi-arid landscape of water, sand dunes and grass are not always found along the coasts of America. In fact, those elements of geology can be discovered smack in middle America. If you can answer these questions, you may already know exactly where to look.

-What American state ranking 15th in size has 1/3 of its area covered by prairie grasses growing atop white sand, stabilized by a thin layer of The Paper - 760.747.7119

fragile soil so unsuitable for crops the land has never been plowed or cultivated? (Hint: The area was named a National Natural Landmark in 1987.) -In what state is a 272-mile, twolane National Scenic Byway described by the late intrepid traveler and American journalist Charles Kuralt as “One of America’s 10 most beautiful highways (that will) take you to one of the last unexplored frontiers where vast treasures can be discovered." -Where is one of the largest dark spots of land in America unmarred

by artificial light allowing for spectacular views of the night sky? -Where can fun-loving tourists float sandy bottom rivers in circular galvanized steel cattle troughs fitted with benches?

Still not sure? Perhaps this clue will help. -What large bird weighing about nine pounds enjoys the same name as the land beneath its wings, and migrates along the byway each spring, landing and resting in numbers exceeding 500,000?

The answer? The Sandhills area in the state of….wait for it… ..Nebraska. What? Yep, The Sandhills area of Nebraska, which lays diagonally across almost the entire state from east to west. The dunes rise as high as 300 feet, and feature slopes as steep as 25 percent. One dune is five miles long.

All were formed from blowing sand during a drought as recently as 2800 years ago, according to radiocarbon testing, while some of the

tests indicate the age of the sand to be up to 8,000 years old.

Encompassing more than 13 million acres (20,312 square miles,) an area about as large as Vermont, New Hampshire and Rhode Island combined, this is the largest area of stabilized grass covered sand dunes not only in America but in the Western Hemisphere. Beneath the prairie grass covered dunes lies somewhat of a geological paradox, contributing further to the beauty of the area, The landscape is interspersed with about 2,000 shallow lakes and more than a million acres of wetlands.

That is because while the Sandhills is generally viewed as a dry grassland, it is uniquely positioned atop the Ogallala Aquifer – one of the world’s largest aquifers. The absorbent sand quickly soaks up precipitation, and where the flat valley floors intersect the aquifer, lakes form ranging in size from10 acres to more than 800 acres. Many can be seen almost consistently along the byway. Lake areas fluctuate seasonally, but characteristic depths are shallow, averaging between two and four feet.

While the dunes are not able to be cultivated for crops, the grass grow-

While nature’s beauty is the major natural attraction the Nebraska National Scenic Byway offers tourists, there are several additional man-made sightseeing opportunities that ensure a drive from one end of the byway to the other end is fun and educational. In fact, the state has adopted a slogan for the byway which follows State Route 2 for its entire length, which is “Sandhill Journey-You’re on 2 something.”

In Alliance at the western end of Route 2, about 80,000 tourists a year stop at Carhenge. This oddity consists of thirty-eight Americanmade automobiles, all painted gray to resemble the ancient stones in England. They are arranged in a 96 feet diameter circle to mimic the (much) more historically important Stonehenge in England which charts the phases of the sun and moon. Nearby a Navajo sheep herder and his son were watching the strange creatures walk about, occasionally being tended by personnel. The two Navajo people were noticed and approached by the NASA personnel. Since the man did not know English, his son asked for him what the strange creatures were and the NASA people told them that they are just men that are getting ready to go to the moon. The man became very excited and asked if he could send a message to the moon with the astronauts. The NASA personnel thought this was a great idea so they rustled up a tape recorder. After the man gave them his message they asked his son to translate. His son would not. Later, they tried a few more people

A single agent was rebooking a long line of inconvenienced travelers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said, "I HAVE to be on this flight and it has to be first class." The agent replied, "I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these folks first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out." The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear, "Do you have any idea who I am?"

Without hesitating, the gate agent smiled and grabbed her public address microphone. "May I have your attention please?" she began, her voice bellowing throughout the terminal. "We have a passenger here at the gate WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to the gate."

Greetings to all the friends I have made over the past 23 years from all the organizations that do good things for our communities. It has been my pleasure to get the word out for you about some special events, fund raisers, general meetings, and with recognition and pictures for many, many people that have deserved that recognition for doing great things in our cities. Local museums displaying their history from settlement to modern day and presenting facts about the Sandhills are numerous along the route and include the The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center in Alliance (free,) and the Custer County Historical Society Museum in Broken Bow (free). One man-made treat along the byway might be just as much a surprise as learning about the Sandhills themselves. The rolling terrain is home to some of the world’s leading….again, wait for it….golf courses.

Perhaps the most outstanding course is the 18-hole Sand Hills Golf Club, a country club in Mullen which is consistently ranked among the top golf courses in the world. Information on the internet says the course was not so much built as it was discovered hiding among the rolling sand hills. In fact, only one hole had to be entirely built, with all the others using the natural terrain. Even the Sandhills sand under the prairie grass was found to have perfectly round grains—making it essentially identical to the "USGA greens mix", a special type of sandy soil that the United States Golf Association considers ideal for the needs of a golf green. Since the private club reportedly

A solid majority of Escondido voters would support a local sales tax measure if placed on the November ballot to help pay for city services, according to a survey commissioned by the city.

Support for the measure ranged from 62 percent if the tax was structured to end when voters decide to stop it, to 68 percent if the tax was established with a 20-year sunset clause, according to a report by True North Research, Inc., which surveyed more than 1,000 registered Escondido voters in May.

The results were presented to the Escondido City Council at its meeting Wednesday.

“The results of this study suggest that if structured appropriately, focused on projects and services that voters identify as their priorities, and combined with effective public outreach/education and a solid independent campaign, the proposed sales tax measure has a good chance of passage if placed on the November 2022 ballot,” said the report. Escondido voters’ top priorities for spending the money were public safety, public works and addressing homelessness, said the report.

After a discussion, the council directed staff to come back with draft language for a sales tax measure the council can consider. The measure would require at least four council votes for placement on the ballot, but only a simple majority of votes in the election to pass, if it is

structured as a general tax measure.

Ballot measures must be submitted to the county Registrar of Voters by Aug. 12 to be placed on the November ballot.

Still to be determined is the amount of the proposed tax, such as one cent or a lesser amount, the specific language of the ballot question, and how long the tax would last. The city is considering a sales tax increase because it faces deficits in its annual budget stretching out over the next two decades. During deliberations on the budget for the current fiscal year, which began July 1, the council had to close a shortfall of $8.5 million.

One key driver of the city’s financial predicament is an unfunded pension liability of nearly $300 million. The city must make payments toward retiring this debt to the state pension system. Annual payments range between $10 million and $22 million over the next two decades and the payments will conclude in 2044, according to a city staff report. The city’s pension obligations became one of the major points of contention during the council’s discussion on Wednesday.

Councilman Joe Garcia said the city’s pension debt should have been more clearly featured in the survey questions, and he said any ballot measure must also frame the issue prominently, as it is a major cause of the city’s projected budget

shortfalls.

Staff presentations on the proposed sales tax increase have outlined potential uses of the funds, but not specifically mentioned the unfunded pension liability, said Garcia. “I think we need to be completely honest and transparent with the community and say we need to pay this and we need your help to do this,” said Garcia.

But Mayor Paul McNamara pushed back on the idea that the pension liability has been concealed, noting that it has been prominently featured in a number of staff briefings for the council.

“We know that bill’s not going away,” said McNamara. “That needed to be addressed the last 20 years, (but) it wasn’t. So I’m struggling to understand your point.” “Since it wasn’t addressed in the last 20 years, now in 2022 we should address it,” Garcia said.

“Isn’t that what we’re doing?” McNamara asked.

Later in the discussion, McNamara said, “In the spirit of transparency we also need to put in there that if they don’t vote for (the ballot measure) the quality of life in Escondido will go down. Which it will. We will not have the money we need to provide the quality of life at the current level.”

sad news. As Dawn explained it, the state of California will not allow insurance companies to raise premiums to meet costs beyond a certain percentage. GEICO was in the red so far and the bureacracy of Californi takes to long to effect change that they would have needed 10-12 yars to get back to a profitable position. So they closed the doors. It was crass, belittling to women, and in very poor taste. I really believe no one would have been disappointed if you had left it out, but I do

the Bluewater Bridge connecting it to Port Huron, MI, the city editor gave me the soundest advice that has kept my head and heart clear all through my career: “Scag, people out there are paid to lie to you.” Amen. What a ride it’s been since then.

Rides with power brokers, trading quips with super athletes, drinks with celebrities, associating with movers and shakers, and having access to some of the most powerful people on this globe. I was never the best reporter in whatever arena I happened to be competing at the time. But there never was anyone better.

I never missed a deadline and I was never beaten on a story. And I always checked information spooned out at press conferences with other sources. I was threatened with lawsuits on a couple of occasions but the pursuers backed down immediately when I told them I was going to hire an attorney also.

But because I was not a capital J journalist, when I began working in the U.S., I was usually bypassed for what the editors deemed to be Pulitzer Prize-possible stories. I was always questioned more thoroughly than my Journalist colleagues by editors when my stories were handed in. I still managed to earn multiple local and regional awards and even a few national laurels. I was fortunate enough to build a trustworthy reputation that earned me direct access to the person I needed, from police chief to corporate CEO to governor to senator. I didn’t have to settle for secondhand accounts from flunkies, public relations deputies or press releases. If I didn’t get through to the individual I was chasing, he or she didn’t get their story into my story. I never reported in my story that such-and-such did not respond to my call. A reporter is supposed to make the call. I made the call. They didn’t return it. I did my job but why did I have to explain that to everybody every day.

Why do today’s Journalists have to explain that they did their job? When they tell us “We reached out to Mr. Big Shot but he didn’t return our call,” why don’t they also report how it all happened if they think the matter is so important? What time was it when they called? Did they call the subject at home, their office, and their favorite saloon? Was the subject on a plane to Timbuktu with a lady believed to be his secretary? Was it raining when they called? I kept it simple. I got as many facts and quotes as I could before deadline time. And I had fun.

Except when there were disasters that left mental scars. A previous edition of The Paper carried my recollection of the Pacific Southwest Airlines jetliner that crashed in a San Diego neighborhood and annihilated 144 people. My first major international-disaster news story occurred within a year after I began recording instant history. There have been several since – the Detroit race riots spring to mind.

Photographer Dick Sutton and I had no idea of the scope and seriousness of what we were racing 35-miles to in the small mill town of Listowel in Southwestern Ontario’s Amish farming country. The community’s arena roof had collapsed under a load of snow soaked by an overnight rain.

Seven hockey players aged 10 to 12 who were scrimmaging in the rink were killed along with their coach. Seven other kids and another adult were admitted to hospital. Nine other people were treated and released. Eight other youngsters and adults in the building escaped injury after they heard a sound like “a giant garage door slamming shut.” A late-comer was lifted off his feet with his hockey gear and blown back onto the sidewalk when he opened the front door just as everything crumpled. It was Saturday, Feb. 28, 1959.

The building was only four years old but a months-later inquiry cited poor construction as the calamity’s cause. It had been erected mostly by local volunteer labor and shoddy work was discovered in some of the laminated trusses and footings of the support columns. The town only had a couple thousand residents but it seemed much smaller as the hordes of news reporters, television cameras and looky-loos invaded it on what remained a totally gray winter weekend. Some locals took advantage of the macabre melee. A menu item we ate that Saturday evening for $1.49 had a 1 inserted and offered to the Sunday spectators for $11.49. It wasn’t too long after that hectic weekend that I became a reporter for the Russian daily, Isvestia.

It occurred during a visit by Russia’s national hockey team to the twin cities of Kitchener Waterloo, about 60 miles west of Toronto.

They had scheduled a game with the K-W Dutchmen, so called because of the towns’ German genesis and the heavy Pennsylvania Dutch-Amish population. That team at that time was pretty well unbeatable wherever they played around the globe. Pro teams wouldn’t even play exhibition games with them. Accompanying the Soviet team was

a gaggle of reporters we hosted at the K-W Press Club. During our chats, we learned that the closest English translation of Isvestia was Dispatch.

Like colleagues we’ve met from all corners of the universe, we got to talking about the business and a**hole editors and asked them how they functioned under the heavy editorial anvil of the Russian government. Isvestia’s reporter, Dmitri (I’ve long forgotten his last name), shrugged us off by asking how many of our stories got printed if the editor or publisher didn’t approve them. That ended the discussion before it turned into an argument. The Russia-Canada game was scheduled for the next night and Dmitri dropped by my desk a few hours before the game to explain that he’d been assigned to another story in another town and needed a favor. He asked if he could call me after the game to get the final tally and a few highlights, like crowd count, high scorers, etc. I said sure and after the Dutchmen won I received his call and gave him the names of the goal scorers, crowd reaction, tenor of the play, IDs of a few celebrities in the crowd and whatever other tidbits I thought might entertain a reader.

I never saw the story. I never got paid. I never heard from Dmitri again. But I do know I once was a reporter for Isvestia.

It was playing softball with some members of that world champion team that got me to be bar buddies at the K-W Press Club with Bob Rafferty, coach of this world-titlewinning group. He also bestowed a compliment on me that I’ve stored in my precious-memories box. After watching me play a couple of softball games, he tapped me on the shoulder at our bench between innings and said, “You know, Scag, I thought you were too small, but you’re a helluva an athlete. Yep, you’re an athlete,” and walked away. Being on a first-name basis with and hanging around with celebrities and newsmakers is part of being in the news business.

It was a heart-warming moment when Gerry Murad and the Harmonicats (not the ones with the midget) played their nationwide No. 1 hit “Peg O’ My Heart,” which was the name of Gerry’s wife, in the recreation room of our home to my wife, Peg.

There also was the time fellow newsman Grant Harrison and I toured every smoke shop in town with Milton Berle to find his favorite cigar. We also stopped in a few bars along the way while he regaled us with recollections and complaints. He didn’t order any alcoholic drinks, as I recall. There also was the afternoon I tourguided Hollywood heart-throb Tab Hunter to some Detroit venues he wanted to see as possible movie-

shoot sites.

My first encounters with attorney and ex-Marine Pete Wilson began when he was San Diego mayor. I became a bit of a thorn in his side whenever the topic of development of an international village in the flood-control channel that formed the border between San Diego and Tijuana came up, which was often. We managed to remain on a firstname basis as he moved on to become governor of California and then a U.S. senator with murmurings of being a possible GOP presidential candidate. Being hosted in President Ronald Reagan’s Oval Office after being named Small Business Advocate of the Year comes to mind when reviewing highlights of my career. And having him remember our previous telephone contacts in California was pride-filling.

Crafting the precise language of the ballot measure may prove challenging, as the maximum word limit is 75, City Manager Sean McGlynn told the council. But he said there will be other opportunities to inform the public, such as an educational web page if the council does place the item on the ballot. Currently, Escondido’s sales tax is set at 7.75 percent, the state’s base rate plus a half-cent regional increase approved by voters to pay for transportation projects. According to a city staff report, eight cities in the county, including Vista and Oceanside, have passed local sales tax increases. Because state law allows total local sales tax increases of up to 2 cents, if another regional tax was passed in San Diego County, that could limit Escondido’s ability to pass its own sales tax increase. Councilmember Mike Morasco said the situation is like a “time bomb waiting out there.”

A one-cent sales tax increase would generate $28 million per year in new revenue, the report said. Teen Airlifted to Hospital After Shooting in Oceanside

A 17-year-old was shot around 11 p.m. at least once in a parking lot near North Harbor in Oceanside, Oceanside police spokesperson Jennifer Atenza said.

The teen was driven to the main entrance of U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton where Oceanside police responded. Medics then transported the teen via helicopter to Scripps Hospital La Jolla. Atenza said the teen's injuries were considered non-lifethreatening but did not disclose the severity of the wounds.

Oceanside police believe a black sedan was involved in the shooting. During the investigation, one car was pulled over, which was full of minors who were questioned before being released to their parents, Atenza said.

It was unclear if police were still searching for any suspects. No other information was available. gO’side Shuttles Quick Transportation to Visitors, Tourists, and Residents

In the sunny weather of July, going around downtown Oceanside can seem tiring for those who do not seek to walk for long periods of time.

The gO’side shuttles have been provided by the community of Oceanside to allow quick transportation to visitors, tourists, and residents all throughout downtown Oceanside. The shuttles are open from Monday through Sunday, from 10 a.m until 10 p.m, bringing about 12 hours of transportation to those who want to go around Oceanside without the inferences.

Page 6

Having the opportunity to ride on the shuttle was a unique experience, it was a quick and efficient way to get around Oceanside with the usage of the “Ride Circuit” app. The waiting time took around 6 minutes, which added to the efficiency of the transportation. The shuttle has a seating capacity of five people per ride and takes you anywhere from Oceanside Harbor south to Vista Way in the area west of Interstate 5. The ride was smooth, spacious for the size of the vehicle, and had clear windows where downtown Oceanside can be viewed. Something to consider is that the drivers may consider looking at your ID since many youths fake their identity on the “Ride Circuit” app. Driver John mentioned that at the beginning of the program, most of the individuals accessing the shuttle services were tourists; later on, however, more than 60% of the individuals riding on the shuttles were residents, thanks to the help of advertising. The average driver gives around 110 rides every day, and the busiest days are Thursdays because of the Sunset Market. An important task many drivers like John have is giving rides to drunk individuals, eliminating the possibility of hurting someone or getting hurt from drunk driving. Additionally, the majority of people riding on the shuttles are older-aged individuals who struggle with walking long distances, allowing them to enjoy the beauty of downtown Oceanside.

The gO’side shuttles should be something to look forward to using when visiting downtown Oceanside as it provides easy access to the city with people who understand the area. Assault with a Deadly Weapon Investigation

On Sunday, July 17, 2022, at 11:28 pm, Oceanside Police responded to multiple calls of shots heard fired from the area of 1300 N Pacific Street. Officers immediately responded and blocked intersections to prevent potential suspects from fleeing the area. Officers located a vehicle attempting to leave the area containing two female juveniles and five male juveniles. Open alcohol containers were seen in the vehicle. The subjects were detained and a search of the vehicle revealed a loaded ghost gun.

Moments later, Oceanside Police received a call that a gunshot victim had just arrived near the intersection of Harbor Drive and San Rafael Drive. Officers arrived and located the 17-year-old male patient suffering from a gunshot wound to the back. The patient was flown to Scripps Memorial Hospital for treatment.

This investigation is active and ongoing. Anyone who may have information regarding this incident is encouraged to contact Oceanside Police Department Investigations at (760) 435-4580 or the Anonymous Tip Line at (760) 435-4730.

Don’t Crash the Economy

Supply chain problems have been negatively impacting California and the rest of the nation for months. Look at any new car lot and you see the lack of inventory. Even buying products at the store is difficult. A big part of the problem has been the backup caused by the lack of trucks to move products from the ports to markets and consumers throughout the United States. Now the problem may become much worse. In 2019, the Legislature pushed through AB 5, in my view one of the most devastating laws to impact business in California’s recent history. The bill was an ill-conceived attempt to deal with the problem of employee misclassification. Instead, it jeopardized the livelihood and security of thousands, including independent truckers. The California Trucking Association sued to block implementation, and the law was not being enforced against truckers pending a potential ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court. Unfortunately, on June 30th, the Court refused to hear the Trucking Association’s lawsuit, and enforcement will begin.

supply chain problems.

I have joined my caucus colleagues in a letter to Governor Newsom asking that he use his executive authority to either delay implementation of AB 5 or to exempt the trucking industry altogether. To view the letter, please visit: https://asmrc.org/wpcontent/uploads/2022/07/Letter-toNewsom-AB-5-7.5.22.pdf Without immediate relief for truckers, jobs will be lost, inflation will worsen, and the supply chain crisis will worsen. The Governor must take action now. Assemblymember Marie Waldron, R – Valley Center, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

40 percent of the nation’s products move through California’s ports, and much of that is transported by independent “owneroperator” truckers. There are approximately 500,000 owner-operators nationwide, and about 70,000 of those operate in California. Additional new regulations and insurance costs mandated by AB 5 could cost each trucker up to $20,000 per year, driving many out of business, costing jobs, driving up consumer prices and worsening

$200 coupon, and by the time you did, you had already booked a new apartment and the coupon was a few weeks away from expiring.

Airbnb sent me substitute listings, but all of them were much more expensive and smaller than the one we had booked.

I contacted Airbnb on your behalf. A representative contacted you a few hours later. "Kindly accept my sincere apologies for the experience you had to witness with Airbnb," he said. "This is definitely not the type of service and experience we would ever want our user to go through."

Q: I recently reserved a two-bedroom apartment in Washington, D.C., through Airbnb. My host canceled our reservation within 24 hours of my arrival.

I quickly chose a one-bedroom apartment that cost $1,300 more. Airbnb offered me a $200 coupon for a future booking. That's it. They won't even talk to me.

I think Airbnb should cover the $1,300 difference from the original booking. Our original booking was one block from where we needed to be. Our new location is 1.1 miles away, which means we also have travel expenses that we wouldn't have had before. Can you help? -Curtis Rahman, Saint Louis Park, Minn. A: Your host shouldn't have canceled your reservation so close to your arrival. If a host cancels, Airbnb promises a full refund, according to its Rebooking and Refund Policy. And if a host cancels a month or less before your check-in, and you contact Airbnb, it promises to "assist" you with finding comparable or better accommodations.

But here's where things get a little fuzzy. Airbnb says that as part of providing rebooking assistance it may -- but is not obligated to -- pay for or contribute to the cost of new accommodations. "We may also provide guests with the option of applying the value of a canceled reservation to new accommodations, or of receiving travel credit, in lieu of getting a cash refund." In other words, it's up to Airbnb to decide how much of your new accommodations it will cover. Interestingly, it recently changed its rebooking policy to remove language that required hosts to cover the extra expense of rebooking. (Airbnb says it never enforced that rule.)

That leaves you in a gray area for getting your refund. When you rented the new place, I think you could have asked Airbnb to pay for it. If it agreed, you should have asked for that promise in writing. Instead, it looks as if Airbnb believed you asked for your money back. "Unfortunately your host needed to cancel the reservation to unforeseen extenuating circumstances," a representative wrote to you in an email. "In compliance with our terms of service, we provided you with a full refund plus a coupon for the value of $200."

I think you may have gotten your wires crossed with Airbnb. The misunderstanding continued as you asked for a supervisor but just found yourself talking to another customer service representative. Worse, you didn't even see the

In a situation like this, you can reach out to one of the Airbnb executive contacts that I list on my consumer website, Elliott.org.

Airbnb provided you with a full refund of the $1,300 and another $200 coupon that expires within a year.

The Legendary Film Star Who Was a General

Problem Solved

Q: My husband and I were scheduled to fly from Boston Logan Airport to Palm Beach, Fla., recently. We took an Uber to the airport and while we were in the car on the Mass Pike about halfway into our trip, we received an email from JetBlue canceling our flight and rebooking us the next day.

When we arrived at the airport, we went directly to the help desk. They confirmed our rebooking, apologized for the inconvenience and arranged transportation for us to get home and to return to the airport. So our out-of-pocket Uber cost for transportation to Logan airport became, in effect, our cost to return to the airport the next day. The next day, JetBlue canceled our flight again, also while we were in our Uber on our way to the airport. We went to the help desk, where a representative told us that they could not rebook us on any other flights. We had to cancel our trip entirely. JetBlue paid for our ride back home.

But we are still out the cost of the original Uber that we took for our vacation to nowhere. JetBlue will not accept our receipt for the ride to the airport. Can you help me get our $71 fare refunded? -- Amy Ohman, Boston A: A: JetBlue is not liable for your transportation costs to and from the airport under its contract of carriage, the legal agreement between you and the airline. But since the airline acknowledged responsibility for the cancellation and covered both trips home, I think it should, for consistency's sake, refund your original ride to the airport. So why didn't it?

Stewart went from actor to B-24 pilot completing more than 35 missions, then returned to Hollywood to continue his career. His first post-war film was “It’s a Wonderful Life!” But he didn’t cut his ties to the military. He spent active-duty time during the Vietnam War in the Reserves and worked his way through the ranks to major general. James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart was born May 20, 1908. He is among the most honored and popular stars in film history. A major Metro-GoldwynMayer contract player, Stewart was known for his distinctive drawl and down-to-earth persona which helped him often portray American middleclass men struggling in crisis. Many of the films he starred in have become enduring classics. He was born in a small-town, (Indiana, PA), to a hardware store owner … like many film characters Stewart portrayed.

Before the War, Stewart was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition for The Philadelphia Story (1940). Later, he received an Academy Lifetime Achievement award in 1985, and in 1999, Stewart was named the third-greatest male screen legend of the Golden Age of Hollywood behind Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant. The American Film Institute also named five of Stewart's films to its list of the 100 best American films ever made. A shy youngster, Stewart held a dream of flying enhanced by the legendary Charles Lindbergh. Ironically, he would portray Lindbergh 30 years later on film.

After college, Stewart and Henry Fonda became roommates and close friends in New York over the summer

of 1932. With Fonda's encouragement, Stewart took a screen test and received a seven-year contract with MGM at $350 a week.

His early interest in flying led Stewart to gain his private pilot certificate in 1935, and commercial pilot license in 1938. He often flew cross-country to visit his parents in Pennsylvania, navigating by the railroad tracks. Nearly two years before the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Stewart had accumulated more than 400 hours of flying time. In 1940, Stewart was drafted into the Army and became the first major movie star in uniform. Stewart was a private but applied for an Army Air Corps commission and Service Pilot rating because he was both a college graduate and a licensed commercial pilot. At 33, Stewart was almost six years beyond the maximum age restriction for Aviation Cadet training. After a lot of red tape, Stewart received his commission as a second lieutenant shortly after the 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor. After training, Stewart wanted assignment to an operational unit rather than serving as a recruiting symbol and aircraft ferry pilot. In early 1942, Stewart was asked to make a film to recruit the 100,000 airmen anticipated the air corps would need to win the War. The Air Corps recorded his voice for narration. The short recruitment film “Winning Your Wings,” appeared in movie theaters nationwide resulting in 150,000 new air corps recruits.

Stewart was concerned that his expertise and celebrity status would relegate him to instructor duties "behind the lines.” Stewart, 33, appealed to his commander, a 30-year-old who understood his situation, recommended by then Captain Stewart to the commander of the 445th Bombardment Group, a B-24 Liberator unit.

To inspire the unit, Stewart flew as command pilot in the lead B-24 on several missions deep into Nazi-occupied Europe. Promoted as a major, and then lieutenant colonel, his official tally of mission credits while assigned to the 445th and 453rd Bomb Groups was more than a total of 20 missions. For combat action, Stewart received two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the French Croix de Guerre, and an Air Medal with three oak-leaf clusters. Years after the War (on July 23, 1959) Stewart was promoted to USAF Reserve brigadier general. During his active- duty periods of Reserve time, he remained current as a pilot on the B-36, B-47 and the B-52 bombers of the Strategic Air Command. In 1966, Brigadier General Stewart flew on a B-52 bombing mission during the Vietnam War. [ After 27 years of service, Stewart officially retired on May 31, 1968. He received more recognition upon his retirement: the U.S. Air Force’s Distinguished Service Medal, and in 1985, President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, Contrary to erroneous earlier reports, Stewart was not advanced to major general by Reagan. He had a legendary career in film and television and is considered one of the greatest of Hollywood actors. James Stewartdied on July 2, 1997, at the age of 89.

I reviewed the paper trail between you and JetBlue. It looks like the airline agreed to refund your ticket and a voucher for your ride home. But it would not compensate you for the Uber ride, noting that, "We do not accept receipts with information that do not match the affected date on the claim." But your dates did match. Like most other companies, airlines don't want to pay questionable claims. So it looks like JetBlue needed more documentation before reimbursing you. If it had only bothered to read your email, then you'd have your refund by now. I list the names, numbers and emails of JetBlue's customer service managers on my consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org. I recommended that you reach out to them, and you did. You provided the airline with the information needed to process your claim, and it did. You received the requested refund. A Fan and Critic - We Need Both

I loved the cover story "Adventure Wildlife & History" (7/21/22 issue) by Jim Winnerman.

Also, I agree with Mr. Logan's "Letter to the Editor" (7/21/22) that our national anthem, flag, country, and all White people and all police are NOT all racists, as pro basketball star Brittney Griner has openly stated. I dislike "stereotyping" and making "sweeping generalizations" about all police, country, flag, or

Page 10 • • July 28, 2022

any racial group -- and yes, that includes White people, many of whom have marched and protested in favor of Civil Rights. Racism comes in all colors.

The Pastor Says...

“doesn’t consist of the things we possess.” But we continue to want the latest phones and gadgets and crave, well, thing.

I hope Britney Griner reflects on our country's freedom of speech, liberty, law enforcement, and U. S. flag as she faces, possibly, 10 years in a cold Russian prison cell for possession of illegal drugs.

I also agree with Mr. Logan that The Paper is a beautiful and widelypopular weekly NEWS magazine, and its (FRONT COVER STORIES) should not bow down to "fiction" pieces, no matter how wellwritten (such as with "Grandma's Way").

I LOVE fiction, but NOT on the broadsheets of news periodicals (weekly or dailies). That's like listening to the evening news and the anchorperson abruptly interrupts with: "Now this latest piece of news that just came in!" (and then he proceeds to read a warm, fuzzy poem or "Huckleberry Finn"). I love to read fiction (my favorite writers are Mark Twain, Louis L'Amour etc.) and I know where to go to find it (digital or library). Fiction should not sully the news cover sheets of The Paper. At my workplace, there are nearly 200 employees (including in the field, warehouses, etc. ) and we all love The Paper and read it online or in our various lunchrooms and breakrooms, but not made-up stories on the front cover. You have an AMAZING line-up of writers like Jim Winnerman, Cecil Scaglione, and Lyle E. Davis ("The Veterinarians" and "John Basilone" are gems and all newsworthy), and of course the powerhouse Friedrich Gomez. One last gripe, we really miss "Sean Dietrich of the South" in the inside pages! No one, I mean no one, writes better "fiction pieces" than Mr. Dietrich. We're in love with him and miss him terribly! From "Sweet Caroline" Douglas, North Inland San Diego County.

Jesus told a story about a rich guy who had abundant crops. He didn’t decide to give away some of his stuff; rather, he decided to expand his storage. Anyone like camping? We have not done much in our lives; we don’t even own a tent. I always struggled with them anyway. We often slept in other people’s tents. However, we have often lived in two specific tents. They are “content” and the other is “discontent.”. Someone said we are often content with the things that we should be discontent with and we are discontent with the things we should be content with. James Mackintosh said “It is right to be content with what we have, but not always with what we are.”

Jesus spoke of a life that was “abundant” that He came to give us. I’m pretty sure he was not talking about an abundance of things because He warned us that life

This cream tabby domestic short hair cat is 3 years old, looking for a new family to call her own. Kanoodle (815653) came to San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus as a stray with a fractured leg. She has received excellent care to help her recover and she is doing much better now! Kanoodle is a sweet, playful gal who will make a great addition to any family. Kanoodle is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3500 Burnet Drive. The key is contentment. We should be content with our stuff but discontent with who we are (in terms of who we are spiritually.) Perhaps we should be discontent with how little we pray; or how much time in scripture. Perhaps we should be discontent with the state of our world.

We can drive ourselves crazy with discontentment with what we don’t have or we can seek to grow spiritually and desire to have what we don’t in terms of growth and integrity.

Mission 316 is a non-denominational church in San Marcos CA that meets at 10 AM on Sundays at the San Marcos Community Center, at 3 Civic Center Drive – right across from the San Marcos Library.

Moose is pet of the week at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society. He’s a 3-1/2-yearold, 74-pound, male, Chocolate Labrador mix.

He was a stray before being taken to a shelter. After that Moose was transferred to Rancho Coastal Humane Society through the Friends of County Animal Shelters (FOCAS) program. He was adopted, then returned when his family decided Moose was too active for them. The $145 adoption fee for Moose includes medical exam, neuter, up to date vaccinations, registered microchip, and a one-year license if her new home is in the jurisdiction of San Diego Humane Society’s Department of Animal Services.

See A Problem ? Report It! For those damaged street signs, street light issues, graffiti sightings, and other local problems needing attention, the City of Vista’s “Access Vista” app provides a convenient way to notify the City to such issues, while providing location information that helps City staff respond.

An MIT student spent his summer going to the football field dressed in a black and white shirt. Each afternoon, he would arrive and sprinkle some bird seed all over the field. Then he would blow a whistle and would watch as the birds ate the seed. At the first football game, the referee came out, blew his whistle and the birds engulfed the field. It took more than 15 minutes to clear it. The student wrote his thesis on this phenomenon and graduated. •••• A Mexican newspaper reports that bored Royal Air Force pilots stationed on the Falkland Islands have devised what they consider a marvelous new game. Noting that the local penguins are fascinated by airplanes, the pilots search out a beach where the birds are gathered and fly slowly along it at the water edge. when the pilots turn around and fly back, the birds turn their heads in the opposite direction, like spectators at a slow-motion tennis match. Then, the paper reports "The pilots fly out to sea and directly to the penguin colony and overfly it. Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

I lost a friend of mine recently. His name was Dr. John Halcon. He died of cancer. I met John when we served on the Palomar Community College Board as Trustees together. He was a professor at CSSM and taught education. John was one of those special people that we all meet in life. We had totally different backgrounds. I was a white city kid from back East and he was a Latino from the agricultural community of the Imperial Valley. Yet our friendship was as natural as if we grew up next door to each other.

I think it was because John had one of those natures that just made it easy to be friends. We talked about every difficult issue one could think of and I would like to think we learned from each other. I certainly learned from him. And these discussions were always filled with humor. I’m going to miss John. He was a caring person with a big heart. I wish there were more folks like him. And if you can’t write this about one of your friends, then I hope you meet someone like him soon. Your life will be enriched. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac Paul P. McNamara Mayor of Escondido pmcnamara@escondido.org

- This Officer is really not so much of a has-been, but more of a definitely won't-be. - When she opens her mouth, it seems that this is only to change whichever foot was previously in there. - He has carried out each and every one of his duties to his entire satisfaction. - He would be out of his depth in a car park puddle.

- Technically sound, but socially impossible.

- This Officer reminds me very much of a gyroscope - always spinning around at a frantic pace, but not really going anywhere. - This young lady has delusions of adequacy.

- When he joined my ship, this Officer was something of a granny; since then he has aged considerably.

- This Medical Officer has used my ship to carry his genitals from port to port, and my officers to carry him from bar to bar. - Since my last report he has reached rock bottom, and has started to dig.

- She sets low personal standards and then consistently fails to achieve them. - He has the wisdom of youth, and the energy of old age.

- This Officer should go far - and the sooner he starts, the better. - In my opinion this pilot should not be authorized to fly below 250 feet.

- This man is depriving a village

somewhere of an idiot.

- The only ship I would recommend this man for is citizenship. - Works well when under constant supervision and cornered like a rat in a trap.

Amazing flashes of insight and clarity lit my brain only to wash away as the waves of pain and drugs rolled in and out. One of the few “insights” to survive post-pain/drug scrutiny was the revelation that The Computer Factory is basically the 21st century equivalent of a “Blacksmith Shop.” For hundreds of years the local Blacksmith used established technology to repair, fashion or join together components that allowed people to “get the job done.” The Blacksmith’s technology was mostly “horse oriented” ours is mostly “Internet oriented”.

On July 6th, the day after the surgical team at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton completed my left knee replacement, I was released. The Doctors recommended some combination of hospitalization and home health care for the first few weeks along with off-site PT (physical therapy). We elected to set up my recovery at the shop. The arrangement would allow Nome and Derek to handle the customers and tech stuff while I answered the phones and kept up with the paper work. July and August are typically slow months anyway. Well, the plan has worked out providing me the opportunity to do my therapy routines as well as get caught on paperwork and giving my some time to reflect on sixty years hanging out with “computers.”

Telegraph, telephone, radio, television, computers, PCs and the Internet are technologies that blossomed in the past two hundred years. All of them evolved from our discovery and exploitation of the fundamental properties of electricity. While we tend to look at these as individual technologies, they are not. Broken down to their basic elements these are all simply steps in an evolutionary progression that is continuous. For example, using what we knew about electricity we were first able to send a coded message (telegraph), then a voice message (telephone, radio), then a picture message (television), then automate human mental activity (computers) and now we combine all in our access devices to the WWW. Here at The Computer Factory we get involved with the part of computer and Internet technology involving PCs (Personal Computers) including towers, desktops, notebooks, All-in-Ones and Micros. It’s popular to think about our PC hardware as part of a rapidly moving, hightech evolution, but that isn’t really true. While PC technology continues to make components ever cheaper and faster, the practical technology is frozen around the speed of the Internet.

Don’t worry about the size. A mutt can also be anything from a Chihuahua or Yorkshire Terrier mix to a Great Dane or St. Bernard mix. Another report suggests that most mutts in the United States are Shepherd mixes. The point is to find the one that fits your home and your lifestyle.

A pet doesn’t have to be purebred to give you a lifetime of love. Sunday, July 31st is National Mutt Day

Vocabulary.com say “A mutt is any dog that's a combination of different breeds, rather than one identifiable breed.” Webster’s Dictionary says most dogs in America are mutts.

So, what are the advantages of inviting mutts into our homes and families?

Mixed breed dogs are thought to be healthier than purebreds. They cost less. When you get a mutt, you’re NOT supporting a puppy mill. They make terrific companion and service dogs. They’re AWESOME! They’re also popular. I read a report recently that said the average American dog is a 39-pound, mixed

As long as the PC is fast enough to interface with the WWW in real time, increases in component speeds are irrelevant. The ten year old refurb “trade in” PC with Windows 10 or 11 that we sell for around two hundred bucks will perform the Internet and applications used by 90% of us just as fast as any of the $1000 to $3000 special applications workstations that we build for gamers, solids modelers, bit coin miners and day traders.

Internet. Health monitoring, educational, historical, arts, sciences, music, travel and on and on. The entire world of human knowledge is there for the taking on the WWW. We strongly suspect that a revolution in education is beginning. A structured approach to learning based on the WWW would be not only cheaper but doubtlessly more effective than the outdated practice of spending four years cooped up in the suffocating, institutionalized mediocrity called “a college education.” Of course students would miss the social an intellectual stimulation of the group dynamics involved in protest movements.
