The first time I ever saw Willie Nelson in a live concert was back in Omaha, Nebraska, sometime in the mid to late He1950’s.had short hair, wore a black, or dark blue suit, white shirt and red standard neck tie. Quite a different image from today’s Willie Nelson. He was part of a touring show. I don’t remember now if it was Elvis on tour, or some other touring show . . . I do remember Sonny James was also onhe had a big hit with “Young Love” Quite a change from today’s Willie Nelson. No more short hair, no more suit and tie; well trimmed gray beard, long flowing gray hair (no more braids), cowboy hat (later in the show, a bandana) and he simply walks on stage and jumps right into 'Whiskey River,'' a brokenhearted drinking song that has been Nelson's set starter for Ondecades.April 30, Nelson turned 89. No matter which song he sings, he still improvises new shades of meaning each time. Back when I first saw Willie, he was pretty much mainstreammusic. He was being noticed, but not by a whole lot of people . . . or a whole lot of recording Thatexecs.would change. Willie has worked hard all his life. Not much has changed . . except, perhaps, his rate of pay. He started working by the age of five, picking cotton in Abbott, Texas. Nelson was influenced musically during his childhood by Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell, Ernest Tubb, Django Reinhardt, Ray Price, and Hank Snow. He played his first professional date at eight, and as an adult sold vacuum cleaners door to door. In 1952, he married Martha Matthews. Seeking a stable income, he took a job as a disc jockey at local radio stations in addition to booking shows. He studied agriculture at Baylor University from 1954 to 1956. Nelson knew he needed to be out front himself, presenting his music in his own way, however unorthodox his voice and unconventional his look. Easier said than done, given the Nashville assembly line of the era. Nelson began putting together the tight-knit musical team that would stay intact for decades and building a following on the road. Nelson signed with Liberty Records in 1961 and released several singles, including "Willingly" and "Touch Me," a duet with his soon-to-be second wife, Shirley Collie. He recorded his first album And Then I Wrote. In 1965, Nelson moved to RCA Victor Records. The

REPUBLICAN WOMEN OF CALIFORNIA – SAN MARCOS RWOC-SM are looking forward to restarting our luncheon schedule for the next year on September 5, Labor Day and welcoming our guest speaker addressing a situation that is same year he joined the Grand Ole Opry and released a string of standard, Nashville Soundinspired country albums, mostly produced by Chet Atkins. He had a number of mid-level chart hits throughout the 1960s and early 1970s before retiring and moving to Austin, Texas, in 1971. Austin's burgeoning hippie music scene pulled Nelson back to music. His popularity in Austin soared as he played his own brand of country music marked by rock and roll, jazz, western swing, and folk influences. He called a kindred spirit, Waylon Jennings, and told him “something is going on down here.” But it wasn’t until 1972, when the legendary producer, Jerry Wexler, signed him as the anchor for a country division of Atlantic Records, that someone encouraged his idiosyncratic, genre-bending sounds in the studio. And now things began to Suddenly, change. the world caught up with Willie Nelson, and by sticking to his guns, he now seemed visionary rather than stubborn. A hastily assembled compilation of songs by likeminded artists was given the title “Wanted: The Outlaws” and became country’s first millionselling album. In 1978, “Stardust,” a magnificent collection of standards produced by the soul artist Booker T. Jones, was an even bigger hit, and Nelson was a bona fide celebrity. Soon, he was also a movie star, playing variations of himself in a string of films, from “The Electric Horseman” to “HalfBaked.” His addiction to touring kept accelerating — the Oscarnominated “On the Road Again” (which he called “the easiest song I ever wrote”) was more than just a theme song; it was a creed to live by. “From the mid-1970's through the mid-80's, Willie was close to being the king of country music, although his sound has always stood starkly apart from the Nashville mainstream. For nearly two decades, he and his band, the Family, have taken on the appearance of a band of musical gypsies who do what they do, oblivious of pop fashion. Ragtag and homemade, but soulful and spontaneous, their sound might best be described simply as "Willie becoming a singer. The fact that he didn't sound like anyone else was not an advantage at the time. "I never pretended to have a great voice," he says. "It works and I can carry a tune. If you have a good song, that's about all that's required."

I had noticed I was losing some of my night vision. It was nothing drastic but the eye doctor got me thinking so I began shopping around for prices. The question was how much it would cost and what was entailed in removing my cataracts and eliminating my need for glasses, which were costing me around $600 a year. I went to three other doctors besides my own.

It all began more than a dozen years earlier when my eye doctor, during a routine annual eye exam, commented that I should look forward to removal of my cataracts because I would be able to consider junking my glasses. I had been wearing Coke-bottle prescription glasses since I was 9 when we moved from a rural hamlet into the city and a school nurse discovered I had to look cross-eyed to read. While lasik eye surgery may not be for everyone, medical and technical advances have made it easier for the more than 25 million people over 40 who develop cataracts to regain clear vision.

On August 7, at 5:45 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department was called to the intersection of Basswood Avenue at Valley Street due to a traffic collision involving a vehicle and an electric Onbicycle.arrival, officers found a 35-year-old female electric bike cyclist injured near the intersection of Basswood Avenue and Valley Street. Traveling on the electric bicycle with the female was a 16-month-old female child. The child did not appear to be injured. The driver of the Toyota 4-Runner, a 42-year-old female, remained at the scene.

Meanwhile, without additional revenue, the city could be forced to make cuts to police, fire, road maintenance, homeless encampment cleanups and other service areas, cuts that McNamara said would impact the city’s quality of life.

Instead, residents identified wanting additional public safety efforts, infrastructure improvements and actions addressing homelessness to improve Escondido’s quality of life.

The City Council approved a ¾-cent sales tax ballot measure late last month aiming to use additional funds to maintain and improve public safety services throughout the city. The council’s approval marked the second attempt to get a tax measure on the ballot after missing the ballot in 2020. Staff had originally proposed a onecent tax measure, which tested well among more than 1,000 voters in a survey conducted this year. Approximately 63% of respondents indicated they would favor a one-cent sales tax increase that would remain in effect until ended by voters. Through a compromise, the City Council passed by a 4-1 vote the ¾cent sales tax measure to end in 15 years. To get the measure on the ballot, the council needed at least four votes. Councilmember Joe Garcia voted against the ballot measure. City officials have debated a sales tax increase for some time in response to its budget woes. The city’s staterequired public employee unfunded pension liability fund obligates Escondido to pay between $15 and $22 million annually until 2044. A ¾-cent sales tax increase would raise Escondido’s current sales tax rate of 7.75% to 8.5% and would generate approximately $21 million annually. At least 50% of that would be used to support police and fire; to maintain infrastructure, parks and buildings; and to address homelessness. The council also voted to add language to the ballot measure that would cite reducing the city’s pension obligations with the funds as well. Garcia, Morasco and Deputy Mayor Tina Inscoe felt that adding the language would be more transparent to voters. Voters in the survey also indicated that reducing pension costs with the funds was on the lower end of their priorities.

Letters to the Editor Man About Town Cont. remember one day the NCO's called him out of a crowd to use for a hand grenade demo. The NCO would drop the grenade, you were supposed to yell "grenade!", kick it into a safety hole so it could explode harmlessly, then vacate the area and/or drop to the ground, placing your hands and arms over your head. The NCO dropped the grenade and George turned on his heels and ran away. Slowly. He was an awkward kid. We all fell down laughing, me included. The grenade was a dummy grenade used for practice. George had a scalp problem. Alopecia, I think. Looked like ringworm or something. Naturally, we all had the close buzz cuts they give basic training recruits. The plans were laid. After lights out we would crawl down the floor, surround his bed, at a signal we would lift George out of bed and carry him off to the shower room where he would be showered, soaped and scalp rubbed with a scrub brush. I Afterparticipated.itwasover he came out of the shower, clearly hurt and upset that this had happened. His face kept the same quiet, serene look but I could tell he was hurt. Then he looked at me. I can't remember ever feeling more ashamed of myself.•••• Back in the 1970’s I managed KOWN radio in Escondido for 7 years. This was mostly during the Alan Skuba era when he owned the radio station and was also an Escondido City Council member and, later, Mayor. During that time we frequently got invitations to La Costa where they had the celebrity tennis tournaments. We'd go to the barbecues and cocktail parties and mingle with the stars. Just like each of you, we had the same fears. "What the hell do we talk about?" "What do you say to a star?" "I hope I/we don't put our foot in our mouth(s)". It is surprising what a few well placed Scotch and Sodas will do! All of a sudden our inhibitions were lessened to the point that when introduced to a luminary we didn't wet our pants. But, alas, we did put our foot in our George Lee I had a guy in basic training named George Lee. He was Chinese. George was a heavy set guy, kind of awkward, spoke broken English. The other guys kinda picked on him but I became his pal. He kinda turned to me for help and support. I gave it to him. Though George could be a pest, at times. He called me "Mr. Dabitt". I remember one day he dropped his rifle and the NCO gave him a royal chewing out and some extra pushups. After the detail was over I could barely keep from laughing when he muttered under his breath. . ."Goddammee sumabitchee. . .". One weekend George came back

Other ongoing projects are rapidly changing the landscape of the area surrounding Restaurant Row. The former Sears building at 1100 West San Marcos, located directly west of Old California Coffeehouse and Eatery but separately owned, will be demolished in the coming months and replaced with a mixed-use development holding 82 residential units and 5,000 square feet of commercial space, according to Sangster.

“Our vision for the area is to create a vibrant and walkable neighborhood with outdoor dining, shops and services, social gathering spaces and new housing,” said Alex Plishner, senior vice president of Lennar’s San Diego division. “Plans are still very early in the application process, but we look forward to hearing feedback from members of the community.”

Previously known as a dining and entertainment hub with up to 15 businesses at a time, Restaurant Row has seen the closure of several restaurants in recent years, including longtime favorites like San Marcos Brewery and Grill in 2020, Sublime Alehouse in 2021, and Katsu Seafood and Steakhouse earlier this year. It’s not all due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new owner of the Old California Restaurant Row property in San Marcos has applied to develop over 200 housing units and 10,000 square feet of new commercial space on a portion of the site still home to several Locatedbusinesses.along West San Marcos Boulevard and Via Vera Cruz, Restaurant Row has been a San Marcos pillar since it was founded by developer Jim Eubank in the 1970s, hosting a variety of mom-and-pop as well as chain eateries over the years. Many were shocked when the Eubank family sold the land to a company called San Marcos Restaurant Row LLC at the end of 2020, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Application materials submitted to the city of San Marcos on June 17 identify the new owner as Elizabeth Papera and real estate company Lennar Homes of California as the developer and applicant for the project.

While exact details about the project are vague, the application mentions plans for constructing 202 multifamily and townhome units above groundlevel commercial businesses, as well as a 1.5- acre park and street improveBeforements. selling the property, the city of San Marcos had approved a minor redevelopment plan to spruce up Restaurant Row with additional landscaping and patios. Leaders of Lennar’s San Diego division said they are still early in the process for the project but are envisioning a thriving residential and commercial area.

His band, featuring his sister Bobbie Nelson's parlor piano and Mickey Raphael's pillowy harmonica, plays quietly, nearly all on acoustic instruments, making room for Mr. Nelson to tease and recalibrate the songs at whim. He tends to group songs by genre, only to individualize them anyway. He will often linger over the words, as he did to turn ''Always on My Mind'' into a vow of Herepentance.plays state fairs, minorleague ballparks and Las Vegas ballrooms. His voice remains immediately identifiable, and virtually unchanged over 50 years. His appeal is all but universal, as illustrated by his collaborations with everyone from Ray Charles to Julio Iglesias to Kid Rock. Not bad for a guy who’s also known as a pot-smoking, taxdodging supporter of Dennis Nelson,Kucinich.who is married to wife No. 4, may be most recognizable for, in earlier years at least, his Pocahontas braids, but it's those eyes that start the trouble. Even now, at 89, they are perfectly almond shaped, deep brown and, well, just deep. Look into them for too long and you may regret it. As one of his early wives did, no doubt, that famous time she walked in on him in bed with another woman. Mr. Nelson focused those soulful, sexy eyes on her and asked: "Are you gonna believe what you see? Or what I tell you?" She chose the former.. Nelson's misfortune in love (or maybe just his greed) is the reason he can wail his songs about heartbreak so well. Not to mention write them. When he went home drunk and passed out cold for the thousandth time, his first wife sewed him into the bedsheets "buck naked," as he likes to say, and piled his clothes and the kids into the car and left. It makes you wonder whom he really wrote "Crazy" Butabout.life can be funny for a crooning cowboy. While on the road he has to sing his love songs to everyone but his wife, Anne Marie, back in Spicewood, Texas, for whom they are meant. And being on the road again means living on his bus, Honeysuckle Rose II. His hair, once reddish-brown, has now turned gray, and finely sifted with gray, hangs loose down his back. And his face! It is marked with so many creases, hollows and furrows it looks almost geological. He sits quietly, watching, like a cornered animal that can't decide if he should pounce, flee or purr. Navy velvet curtains hang over the windows, and the dark brown paneling and dark carpet seem to soak up light. "It's kind of like living in a submarine," Nelson acknowledges, showing a small smile. "But I'm happy on the bus. Home is where you're happy. It can be anywhere, out there playing music, wherever I'm at. There's the desire to be where you are plus the desire to go back where you were." Money has been a loaded issue for Mr. Nelson since 1990, when the Internal Revenue Service seized his house and all his assets for nonpayment of $16.7 million in taxes. What happened, he says, was that he owed $2 million in taxes, and on advice of his accountants, Price Waterhouse, was told to borrow $12 million to invest in tax shelters so he wouldn't have to pay the $2 million. The only problem, he says, was that, after the fact, the shelters were disallowed.

Lennar, which has a San Diego division office, has constructed dozens of residential units in San Marcos, including three residential communities — Parkside at Mission Circle, Skylark near Foothills Park, and Sunrise on Sunrise Avenue. While currently zoned for light industrial and mixed-use development, Lennar has proposed zoning the site as a specific plan area, which would set long-term development goals.

A public hearing for the project will likely not occur for at least a year, Sangster estimated, as staff needs to review the application before it can go to the Planning Commission. The application would go to the City Council for final review and approval if approved by the commission.

According to Sangster, the developer sent out a notice of the application to all businesses within a 1000-foot radius of the project site rather than the typical 500-foot requirement.

It would be great if we could get them set up at another location in town.”

Jim Hadley, owner of the 55 Yardline Sports Bar, said many businesses have been leaving upon hearing that their leases will not be renewed with the pending redevelopment. Hadley’s lease ends in February, and while he may be able to get an extension, he doesn’t know what will come next. “I’ve been here 17 years and made a damn good business out here. Now, I can’t even sell because without a longterm lease, no one’s going to buy if they can’t invest,” Hadley said. “I would love to stay in business; I don’t want to close my business. But with how it’s looking, I might have to close my doors and walk. I have 24 employees that will lose their jobs.”

Medicare covered almost all the cost of this proceStepdure. Two was to have a short-sighted lens placed in one eye and a farsighted lens in the other eye and, while the brain adapts to that situation and my eyesight would improve, I would still require reading glasses. This procedure required some additional out-ofpocket costs. Step Three entailed removing the impaired lenses and replacing them with prescription tri-focal lenses. This involved the most out-ofpocket costs. The extra costs involved in Steps Two and Three ranged from about $1,500 for each eye to $7,000 per eye. I decided to stick with my doctor, because his prices, while not the lowest, were on the lower end of the median. I chose Step Three because it also included the cost of correcting the astigmatism in my eyes. Reviewing what I paid for eye exams and eyeglasses each year, my surgically new eyes would pay for themselves within five years. I chose to have the second lens implanted two weeks after the first. The result was fantastic. I could see out of that new lens immediately. Stated simply, the clouded lens is sucked out and a plastic lens – think of a small contact lens – with spring-loaded sides to hold it in is set into your eye. The rest of the time was used up in preparing for surgery and staying put for observation immediately afterwards. About a month later, I was waltzed into surgery again to have the astigmatism removed by laser surgery. What they do is smooth out the imperfections in the curvature of the eye. That’s when I learned both eyes were going to be repaired at the same time. It was a breeze. This procedure is simple. After having measured your eyeball to determine the flaws that must be removed, they rake a laser beam over it to burn off the bumps and irregularities. Just like every other procedure leading up to this event, I was awake while they were doing this. There never was any pain and the results were Iinstantaneous.couldseethe red beam streak across my eye and smell the hot laser doing its work. VFW statistics from 2019 indicate that the Veteran's Administration (VA) system is tracking more than 64,000 veterans with opioid disorders, and this number has more than doubled since 2002. Wait times for mental health services are delaying badly needed care. In San Diego, one VA clinic stopped accepting new patients, and others have reported wait times of over 25 days. That’s why I introduced Assembly Joint Resolution 17 (AJR 17). AJR 17 (available here) highlights the problems involving mental health and drug abuse suffered by veterans and how they can be curtailed with better resources and proper treatment. AJR 17 calls upon the Biden administration, Congress and the Department of Veterans Affairs to take swift action to alleviate the mental health and substance abuse scourges now plaguing those who have served our county.

Harding died as one of the most popular presidents, but after the exposure of scandals that took place during his tenure -- such as the infamous Teapot Dome oil scandal – his popularity eroded dramatically. In historical rankings of the U.S. presidents, a number of historians rate Harding among the worst of chief Historiansexecutives.generally

A major foreign policy achievement came with the Washington Naval Conference of 1921–1922, in which the world's major naval powers agreed on a naval limitations program that lasted for 10 years. But Harding’s success was overshadowed by two of his cabinet members: Interior Secretary Albert Fall and Attorney General Harry Daugherty, both were implicated in corruption.

Harding did appoint a number of wellregarded and successful figures to his cabinet, including Andrew Mellon as Treasury Secretary; Herbert Hoover as Secretary of Commerce; and Charles Hughes as Secretary of State.

Most of the scandals marring the reputation of Harding's administration did not emerge until after his death. The most memorable of those scandals involved the U.S. Naval oil reserves at Tea Pot Dome in Wyoming. Teapot Dome was one of three reserves set aside for use by the Navy in a national emergency. There was a longstanding argument those reserves should be developed. Harding signed an executive order transferring the reserves from the Navy Department to the Department of Interior under Secretary Fall’s control. He was accused of pocketing money from that Themaneuver.scandals greatly damaged Harding’s historical reputation. On Aug. 2, 1923, Harding died of heart disease in San Francisco while on a western speaking tour. Among friends he was a noted gambler, heavy drinker. There was strong evidence Harding was a womanizer. Reportedly, John F. Kennedy wasn’t the only president to use the backstairs of the White House to “entertain” female companionship … President Harding paved the way in that regard. Harding was succeeded by his vice president, Calvin Coolidge, who is highly regarded in history. Coolidge would go on to be elected President in his own right after completing Harding’s term. I’ll tell you about “Silent Cal” in an upcoming column. Coolidge was seemingly a quiet, boring individual, but in reality was quite the opposite. either a refund or a voucher for a future cruise. Harding: One of America’s Worst Presidents Warren Gamaliel Harding was the 29th President of the United States, serving from March 4, 1921 until his death on Aug. 2, 1923. History and the nation never realized just how bad he was until after his death.

"Our most dangerous tendency is to expect too much from the government and at the same time do too little for it," he said. His expectations were delivered on both accounts.

The two Harding cabinet appointees who darkened the reputation of his administration for their involvement in scandal were Harding's Senate friend, Fall of New Mexico, and Daugherty. In an earlier column I told you about Secretary Fall, who was a Western rancher. He was a former miner, who advocated pro-development. He was opposed by noted conservationists of the day such as Gifford Pinchot, who wrote, "… it would have been possible to pick a worse man for Secretary of the Interior, but not altogether easy.”

Harding appointed a number of other friends and acquaintances to federal positions who served competently, while other of Harding’s friends who proved corrupt, were dubbed the "Ohio Gang.”

agree that if Harding was guilty of anything it was poor judgment of character and choice of appointments. He famously took care of his friends, but many of them were either unqualified for their positions or took illegal advantage of their Hardingoffice. was born in Blooming Grove, Ohio, Nov. 2, 1865. Except when political service took him elsewhere, he lived in rural Ohio all of his life. When not yet 20 years of age, he settled in Marion and bought the failing The Marion Star newspaper, building it into a successful publication. In 1899, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate, and after four years in office successfully ran for lieutenant governor. He was defeated for governor in 1910, but four years later Harding was elected to the U.S. Senate. In 1920, when Harding ran for the Republican nomination for president, he was considered an “also-ran” with little chance of success. The leading candidates could not gain a majority in order to secure the GOP nomination, leaving the convention deadlocked. Harding's support gradually grew until he was nominated on the 10th ballot.

Harding conducted a “front porch campaign” from his home in Marion allowing supporters to come to him. Running on a theme of “return to normalcy,” Harding was victorious over Democrat James M. Cox and Socialist Party candidate Eugene Debs. Harding became the first sitting U.S. senator to be elected president. Harding preferred a low-key inauguration without the customary parade celebration. He was sworn in as President on March 4, 1921, in the presence of his wife and father. There was a brief reception at the White House where he gave a short inaugural address.

How about the crowds at major attractions, such as historic sites, museums and theme parks? One strategy is booking a private tour in advance. Larissa Lowthorp, a film producer from Los Angeles, likes to find a tour on sites like Viator.com. “A tour guide has private arrangements with venues or agreements for off-hours visits,” she says. That allows her to avoid long lines and crowds. But nothing prepares you for the wave of summer crowds like an annual Walt Disney World pass. As a Florida resident for 12 years, most of them spent in Orlando, I quickly learned that you could avoid long lines by showing up before the park Whileopens. tourists were sleeping in or enjoying their all-you-can-eat breakfast buffets, I pulled my young kids out of bed early and made it to the gates of the Magic Kingdom as they swung open.

Also, many luxury hotels now offer advance check-ins to avoid the look of a long line in the lobby. Or you can work with your travel adviser to handle the check-in details before you arrive. Your agent will send your credit card and passport information ahead, so that all you have to do is pick up the keys to your room.

What occurred to me several months later happens in as many as half of the cases of lens-implant procedures. I had to have what is called secondary cataracts removed. Your natural lens sits in a small sac in your eye. When that natural lens is removed, the front of that membranous sac is opened to remove the cataract lens and insert the artificial lens. In cases such as mine, the portion of the membrane remaining behind the artificial lens can cloud over, becoming what medics refer to as a secondary Thecataract.process was simple and discomfort free. I was taken in for an eye exam, my pupils dilated with eye drops and, while the doctor peered into my eyeballs with those white lights like he usually does, I heard a series of muffled “pop-poppops.” Each eye took less than a Theminute.popping was laser shots poking holes in the remaining membrane to let light through. There are a lot of crazy people out there, and we know most of them personally.”

The reward: No lines and no crowds, even on the busiest days. By the time most visitors were arriving, my family and I were headed through the turnstiles and back to the parking lot.

If you can afford it, you can pay to skip the crowded check-in areas. You can hire a VIP greeter at the airport to expedite check-in and customs lines. At a site such as Global Airport Concierge, you can book a meet-and-greet service at the airport starting at $75. Sylvia Lebovitch, a luxury travel adviser at Ovation Network, also recommends a private airport suite available at Los Angeles International Airport. “It has separate security areas and check-ins, so you never need to mingle with other travelers,” she says. “It’s the closest thing to flying private.”

4th, you misspelled the abbreviated form of Naloxsone several times.. it should be Narcan, not Narcam. But good article otherwise.

Sodefensively.howdo you avoid the mass of humanity at the peak of the busiest summer travel season in a generation? Let’s start with the obvious pro tip for finding a little space on vacation: Go where there are no crowds. “Schedule travel outside of rush hour,” says Caldwell. “Visit attractions during unpopular times.”

Does joining a loyalty program help? It can, says Craig Strickler, a managing director for Valor Hospitality Partners, a hotel management company. “Joining the frequent traveler program for the airline you fly, the hotel you stay in, or even the rental car company you use offers you perks that you may not receive otherwise,” he says. Those include upgrading to a better seat or hotel room if available or using a preferred — and sometimes shorter — check-in line. But there’s a catch. You have to participate in the program to reap the benefits, which means spending money with the company. You might pay more for your travel over time. Also, you’ll get a lot of unsolicited offers from the company and its partners. “Just remember, there’s always the unsubscribe option at the bottom of the email,” Strickler says. Sometimes the best way to avoid crowds is to defy conventional wisdom. That’s the advice of blues guitarist Michael “Big Mike” Aguirre, who relocated from St. Louis to Anguilla at the start of the pandemic. He says there are benefits to visiting the island at times when no one else wants to. You won’t have to worry about long lines at a restaurant or crowded beaches this time of year. That’s because it’s low season in the Caribbean: It’s rainy and hot, and the region’s hurricane seasons runs from June through November. Yes, it’s a little risky, but nothing a good travel insurance policy won’t cover. “A less-traveled destination offers a more relaxed pace and a more immersive experience,” Aguirre There’ssays. a final option, which is to not travel at all. Instead, postpone your vacation until the kids are back in school. That may be my favorite crowd-avoiding strategy. You can go anywhere in early September, and it won’t matter. Everyone will be gone by then. Prices will fall, and the travelers you meet along the way will be relaxed again. As a writer, Nelson has slowed down in recent years, though it's hard to blame him. He says that between the mid-1950's and mid-1970's, he wrote about 2,000 songs. "I went into the studio last week with my original band and a new songbook of mine," he says. "We started on the first page, and in two days we did 11 segments. I want to do that with all my songs, the way I hear them and feel them now. People wouldn't know but one or two of "There's'em." a saying I could never decide was mine or Roger Miller's. I decided I'd take credit for it: 'I didn't come here and I'm not leaving.' " He has had seven children in all, yet he has traveled his entire life, leaving home for vast stretches of time. His eldest son, Billy, who had been treated for alcohol abuse, committed suicide three Christmases ago. Should he have done anything differently? "Well, you have all those guilts and regrets, but you can run yourself crazy," he says quietly. "You're not the same person now you were then, so why take responsibility for something you didn't do?" When he lifts his eyes, the anguish in his face belies the slickness of the words.

But the crowds are everywhere — at the airport, on the plane, in the hotel lobby. What about them?

It looks like you tried to escalate your case to one of them, but they continued to insist on a fourth repair -- even though you had already discarded the electric range and sold the condo. Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation: A young life saved by the gift of a dual organ transplant. In July 2021, Nehemiah “Nemo” Maldonado was a healthy, active 12-year-old playing with friends and family in his home state of Arizona. Weeks later, he was fighting for his life, facing an illness that came on suddenly and progressed rapidly. Within months, he would become the first patient at Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego to receive a dual organ transplant— both a heart and a kidney.

The Transplant Games of America, sponsored by Rady Children’s, kicked off with a parade celebrating donors, families and recipients, and honoring donors who gave the selfless gift of life. Held every two years, this was the first time the event happened on the West Coast.

Also, since school is just starting, I asked our police department to give us a brief on their active shooter procedures when it might involve our school children. That presentation will be coming to our council meeting shortly. While we live in a safe city with good numbers to prove it, prudence dictates that we always prepare. As an economic hub of North County, we’re always proud to announce new and expanding businesses that call San Marcos home! Here are a few that have launched into new spaces this summer:

• Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido, I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for the heat to end. I’m glad the city council agreed to build a new pool complex in Grape Day Park. We have been talking about it since I was elected, but coming up with the monies has always been the challenge. If you can say that something good came out of COVID, it was the ARPA monies that allowed the city to initiate this new complex. After the council agreed to do this, we collaborated with the school district to chip in, and they are putting in a little over 15% of the total cost. I think the water complex will raise the profile of the city, and in days like these help people to cool off. We probably need more splash pads too, but funding is always an issue.

Soroptimist International of Vista and North County Inland (SI Vista NCI) has donated $1,000 from the club’s general fund to aid Ukrainian refugees in Hungary and Ukraine through Soroptimist International of Europe’s War Zone Initiative projects. The money was wired directly to Soroptimist International of Szombathely (Hungary) which will use it to provide families who have fled the war in Ukraine with basic medical supplies. Many Soroptimist clubs in Hungary, Poland, Romania and Moldova have set up funding mechanisms to provide assistance to the 3.2 million refugees who have fled their Ukrainian homeland. Individuals and clubs who wish to donate to any of the Soroptimist global relief efforts can donate to a specific project of their choosing here:

By 2010 the both the average PC and the Internet were fast enough to stream video and run applications in real time. On-line data bases, cloud storage and massive on-line supercomputers virtually eliminated the need for local mass storage and higher processing power in home and business PCs. While cell phones, tablets and notebook PCs provide portable access to the WWW, Allreleased in 2009 the Internet was fast enough to stream video and computers were fast enough to handle high speed Internet. Developers eased up on making PCs more capable and concentrated on making the Internet more capable. For most business and home users today, higher CPU speeds, RAM capacity and mammoth storage drives are of no value. I’m using a Windows7 PC to write this column. This PC has four GB of RAM and a thirteen year old AMD Athlon II X2-250 CPU with a benchmark speed of just over 1000. We have dozens of in Ones, desktops and towers comprise the comfortable big screen “workstations” enjoyed by home and business Beforeusers. 2010 it was common knowledge that your new PC would be technologically obsolete in two years and you would need to replace it. The “Internet age” changed everything. 2011 saw the first ever year-to-year decline in PC sales. PC sales continued to decline at a rate of 5%-6% each year until Covid’s “work from home” rules in 2020-21 temporarily reversed the trend. By 2022, the decline was back on with PC sales dropping 15% in the first two quarters.

The “PC age” came on with a “bang” in August 1981 with the introduction of IBM 5150, the first affordable, high volume, general purpose PC (personal computer) for home, school and business. Nearly thirty years later the “PC age” died quietly with a “whimper” as the “Internet age” turned PCs into “Internet terminals.”

The Animal Safehouse Program works with veterans, seniors, and others who need temporary care or rehoming services for their pets.

PC sales continue to decline but there are more PCs in use today than ever before! How can that be? The obvious answer is that PCs last a lot longer than they did in previous years. We commonly see working home and business PCs that are up to thirteen years old and still technologically relevant. PC users have become aware that older PCs are just as fast as on the Internet as a brand new PCs. Users who choose to run stand alone applications rather than “Cloud” versions find that standard applications like MS Office, Adobe Reader, Quicken, Turbo Tax etc run at the same “real time speed” whether your PC is brand new or twelve years PCsold. are like cars in that they’ve both hit the maximum speed limit for most users. GM, Ford and Chrysler all had cars that topped out at over 120 MPH sixty years ago. It didn’t make sense to make them faster because the roads and human reflexes had difficulty handling what was already available. So the turned their attention to fuel efficiency, safety, comfort and other technologies. By the time Windows 7 was Marcos
