Volume 50 - No. 34
FICTION by Tom Calabrese
It was the summer of 1955 in the small city of Lawndale, California located in southern Los Angeles County and bordered by Redondo Beach to the west, Hawthorne to the north and Torrance to the southeast.
Little Richie Myers was only five years old and one of the highlights of his summer days was riding his bicycle with his two older brothers; Jimmy and Billy to Cathy’s Sweet Shop on Rixford Avenue. Cathy Miller was in her late forties and The Paper - 760.747.7119

operated an ice cream parlor, pastry and candy shop and her husband Eddie had the building next door where he did small engine repair for residents and fixed the bicycles for the kids. In between both buildings was a large open field filled with dandelions. The Millers’ house was a small well-kept bungalow that was set far back from both buildings and the street and shaded by citrus and almond trees and one towering oak tree. Cathy Miller just loved having the neighborhood children around so
even when they were short on spending money, she would always find a way for them to earn some extra money for their treats by sweeping or dumping trash. Little Richie Myers was one of her favorites so she made it a point to keep the sweet and brittle pieces from her signature candy apples just for him.
Eddie Miller would sometimes hire Richie to pick dandelions from the field so he could make dandelion wine and if anyone was really interested or paying close enough attention they would have noticed that the
Millers were terrible business owners and should have gone broke from their generosity. The Millers often paid the kids more for minor chores then they were making from selling products to them, but they were content with the status quo and never made an effort to change things. It was June 1932 in Munich and Germany was in a depression and the mood was grim. Katerina and Eric Mueller had just gotten married at a small Catholic church in Dachau and honeymooned in Mittenwald in the Southern Bavarian Alps. The

Muellers did not trust Adolf Hitler or believe his message of returning Germany to prosperity and glory, but millions of Germans were fooled by his rhetoric so Katerina and Eric decided it was time to immigrate to America before Adolf Hitler was appointed chancellor in January 1933. After arriving at Ellis Island, the Muellers traveled west to California and settled in Lawndale, California. Eric got a job working for one of the ranches in the area as a mechanic and Katerina found employment at a local bakery. America declared war on Germany on January 3, 1942 and in early March of that same year; agents of the Office of Strategic Services approached Eric and Katerina and asked if they would consider returning to Germany to work as undercover agents for the Allies.
In the nine years that the Muellers had been in the United States, they grew to love the country and when they saw other Americans going off to war, they were honored to do their part. In order to make their return to Germany seem credible to German officials, Katerina and Eric were first sent to a temporary detention center at Fort Bliss at El Paso, Texas then deported with a group of other German nationals. During the three years that they were in Germany, Katerina and Eric were

able to obtain valuable intelligence for the Allies that saved thousands of lives. Katerina worked in a small café not far from where she grew up as a child and Eric got a job working for the Third Reich as a mechanic. They would overhear German officers speaking about future missions and troop movements then relay that information to their contact in the O.S.S. Frank Kelly had matinee good looks; he was tall, had well chiseled features with blond hair and blue eyes, in fact before the war he was an up and coming actor in Hollywood and had supporting roles in Clark Gable, Gary Cooper and Errol Flynn movies and the studio had high hopes for his future, but like many of the actors of the day, he put his career on hold to serve his country. Lieutenant Kelly was a natural born leader and his elite platoon respected him and he would have been a major by now, but couldn’t quite play the game of following orders blindly without question. He was chosen to be the contact for Katerina and Eric because of his Aryan appearance and the fact that he learned to speak German fluently. This allowed Kelly to move behind enemy lines without being questioned even though he still carried forged documents. It was August 15, 1944 and Kelly had just received valuable Intel from the Muellers about a major German offensive, but when he relayed the information to Major General Chatsworth Colt, the general ignored

"I don't know," she replied. "I can't read." •••• A ten-year-old, under the tutelage of her grandmother, was becoming quite knowledgeable about the Bible. Then one day she floored her grandmother by asking, "Which Virgin was the mother of Jesus: the Virgin Mary or the King James Virgin?" •••• A Sunday school class was studying the Ten Commandments. They were ready to discuss the last one. The teacher asked if anyone could tell her what it was.
Susie raised her hand, stood tall, and quoted, "Thou shall not take the covers off thy neighbor's wife." •••• The Preacher was wired for sound with a lapel mike, and as he was giving his sermon he moved briskly about the platform, jerking the mike cord as he went. Then he moved to one side, getting wound up in the cord and nearly tripping before jerking it again. After several circles and jerks, a little girl in the third row leaned toward her mother and whispered, "If he gets loose, will he hurt us?" •••• Six-year-old Angie and her fouryear-old brother Joel were sitting together in church. Joel giggled,
the Intel because he had already devised his own strategy then proceeded to send a battalion into battle where they were greatly outnumbered and suffered massive casualties. When Kelly found out about the debacle, he burst into General Colt’s office, cursed him then knocked him out with a crashing left hook. Frank Kelly was busted down from lieutenant to private and given thirty days in the brig and would have received a court martial except for the fact that Division didn’t want the publicity of anyone finding out about General Colt’s major tactical blunder.
Private Kelly returned to his unit after his release from the brig only to find out that Captain Maitland, the nephew of General Colt had taken over his command. Captain Maitland was a poor officer who was seldom around, often leaving for days at a time to take care of personal errands or carry out cushy assignments authorized by General Colt. The daily operation of the unit fell on the able shoulders of Staff Sergeant Joe Marchetti or “Big Joe” a big gruff ex teamster who rose up through the ranks after landing at Normandy Beach. Private Kelly continued to stay in contact with the Muellers even though he was not authorized to do so then he would relay any pertinent information to Big Joe who found a way to get it to his contacts at Army Intelligence. Army units began crossing over the River Rhine in March, 1945 and
sang, and talked out loud. Finally, his big sister had had enough. "You're not supposed to talk out loud in church." "Why? Who's going to stop me?" Joel asked.
Angie pointed to the back of the church and said, "See those two men standing by the door? They're hushers." ••• Our five-year-old son Mark couldn't wait to tell his father about the movie we had watched on television, "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea." The scenes with the submarine and the giant octopus had kept him wide-eyed. In the middle of the telling, my husband interrupted Mark, "What caused the submarine to sink?" With a look of incredulity Mark replied, "Dad, it was the 20,000 leaks!" •••• My friend, Carolyn, was frustrated by how often her four-year-old son, Brian, was getting dirty playing outside. At wit's end, she finally said, "Brian, can't you play someplace where it's cleaner?"
"If God didn't want us to play in the dirt," Brian logically said, "why did he make so much of it?" •••• When my grandson, Billy, and I entered our vacation cabin, we kept the lights off until we were inside to keep from attracting pesky insects.
Kelly met with the Muellers at a small farmhouse just outside Mannheim. “It won’t be long before the war is over, units are fanning out all over Germany,” Kelly smiled.
“We just found out something that you might be interested in,” Katerina said. “Like I said, the war is almost over and our job is done,” Kelly responded
Eric pulled out a small map and set it on a table and pointed to Wernberg, “Nazi command has stored 14,000 gold bars in a warehouse in this town and they plan on moving it in three days. Some high ranking officers are going to use it to buy their way out of the country. These Nazis are war criminals and they know they’ll be executed if they are caught so they are desperate to get this gold.” Kelly looked at the map and instinctively knew what the Muellers were proposing, “What would happen if someone and I’m not saying who, got to the gold before they did?”
Katerina smiled, “Then some very bad people would have to face the wrath of justice.” Eric added, “And that someone would also have a lot of extra money

Still, a few fireflies followed us in.
Noticing them before I did, Billy whispered, "It's no use, Grandpa. The mosquitoes are coming after us with flashlights." •••• A three-year-old went with his dad to see a litter of kittens. On returning home, he breathlessly informed his mother there were two boy kittens and two girl kittens. "How did you know?" his mother asked.
"Daddy picked them up and looked underneath," he replied. "I think it's printed on the bottom." •••• Another three-year old put his shoes on by himself. His mother noticed the left was on the right foot. She said, "Son, your shoes are on the wrong feet." He looked up at her with a raised brow and said, "Don't kid me, Mom. I KNOW they're my feet." •••• On the first day of school, the Kindergarten teacher said, "If anyone has to go to the bathroom, hold up two fingers."
A little voice from the back of the room asked, "How will that help?" •••• A mother and her young son returned from the grocery store and

Kelly brought what was left of his platoon the following evening to meet with the Muellers. The soldiers included; Big Joe, Oddball, Kilroy, Pardner, Cowboy, Crapgame, One Shot, Melonhead, Tuco, Turk and Sonny Boy. Big Joe was naturally skeptical, “You’re crazy Kelly! We just might make it out of this war alive and now you want to go on a mission that we don’t have to!”
Crapgame quickly interjected as he figured out the numbers in his mind, “Fourteen thousand bars of gold, a bar weighs about twenty seven pounds and depending on the price of gold at the time, that could be anywhere between fifteen and twenty million dollars.” “That’s a lot a hay, Big Joe.” Cowboy drawled. “You can’t spend it if you’re dead,” Big Joe snapped back.

Forced to abandon a public event due to the pandemic, the Valley Center History Museum and Friends of the Valley Center Library are instead publicizing the names of local women who live or have lived in Valley Center and Pauma Valley. More than 20 local women were to be spotlighted, among them pioneer civil rights attorney Ida Mae Adams who successfully argued before Congress in 1924 to grant full citizenship to America's indigenous people; mathematician Kathryn Thuleen who was among the elite group of young female scientists known as "human computers" who helped NASA launch America into the exploration of space; and Elizabeth Jane Wimmer whose correct identification of the first gold nugget resulted in the California Gold Rush of 1848 and who is offi-
It was unanimous and everyone voted to go after the gold except one person, “Everybody is in except for you, Big Joe.” Kelly said, “We need you, but if we have to, we’ll go without you.”
With the Muellers’ valuable intelligence, Kelly’s leadership, Big Joe’s strategic skills and the huge incentive of millions of dollars in gold dangling before them, the group accomplished their objective and only Turk and Pardner suffered non-life threatening wounds in the fight.
and no job when I get back to New Mexico,” Tuco piped in, “It would be nice to not worry about money for a change…count me in.”
“I got no problems killing Nazis who want to die.”
Big Joe looked around the room at his men and everyone nodded, “Why should I be the only sane one in this bunch of section eights,” Big Joe turned to the Muellers, “Tell me what you got.”
“So now that we’ve got the gold, what do we do with it now? It’s not like we can split it up and put it in our duffle bags,” One Shot said.
Everybody cheered their approval as Eric began to explain, “There are twenty men guarding the gold.”
“We can take them,” Wheels quickly interrupted. “These are Waffen SS soldiers, the most ruthless Nazis of all,” Eric responded.
“They’ve been ordered to guard this gold with their lives and they will fight to the last man, they will never surrender,” Katerina warned.
“This is getting better all the time,” Big Joe growled.
“Big Joe, you’ve led these men through worst situations than this,” Kelly encouraged.
“We might as well get something out of it this time,” Sonny Boy called out,
“We have a place to hide it until after the war ends then we’ll transport it to Switzerland,” Eric explained.
The war with Germany ended on May 8, 1945 and tens of thousands of American troops eagerly awaited their return to the states, but not so for Kelly and the others who volunteered to stay behind and help with security. In July 1945 a caravan of three trucks loaded with gold made its way from Germany to Switzerland where it was equally divided among all those that participated in the raid, with Katherina and Eric receiving two shares. After obtaining their numbered bank accounts, the group went their separate ways.
Frank Kelly went back to Hollywood and resumed his movie career and the Muellers changed their names to Miller and Katerina became Cathy and Eric became Eddie and they returned to Lawndale, California.

As it is with most hard to believe stories, it became hard to distinguish between fact and folklore as the years passed. Clint Eastwood’s movie, Where Eagles Dare, that he costarred in with Richard Burton, had just been released in March, 1969 when he was approached by two aspiring screenwriters in Carmel who had been researching the gold heist for many years. Clint and the writers met a week later in Malibu to discuss the project in greater detail and Eastwood agreed to do the World War II movie. Clint contacted Frank Kelly and asked him about his involvement, but Frank refused to deny or confirm any involvement in the caper, but reluctantly agreed to be a technical advisor on the movie that was eventually named after him, Kelly’s Heroes.
When Frank approached Clint and asked that some changes be made to the shooting script, Clint was intuitive enough to know that Frank was trying to protect certain individuals. One thing that Frank Kelly was absolutely adamant about was that the husband and wife espionage couple that was suspected of being involved in the robbery be completely left out of the movie. The studio was hesitant to do this, but when Clint Eastwood sided with his friend, the screenplay was changed to have a German Officer give the information to Kelly about the gold.

The Paper Encouraging COVID-19 Numbers to pull San Diego County off of Watch List?
The County of San Diego last Friday announced that it has reached the metric that allows it to be removed from the state watch list, though formal confirmation of those numbers are pending state approval. For the third consecutive day, the county recorded a 14-day average case rate under 100 coronavirus cases per 100,000 residents. The county reported the rate at 96.3 on Friday, compared to 98.3 Thursday and 94.1 Wednesday . It’s an important milestone, one that signals that renewed efforts to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus have been successful, though the reopening of businesses and schools is still a ways off.
The county now must maintain that new status for 14 more consecutive days for the state to allow all schools, grades kindergarten through 12, to reopen. No other businesses can reopen until the state provides further guidance, county officials said Friday. The continued lower case rate was not the only big achievement the county reported Friday.
County officials reported 299 hospitalized COVID-19 patients as of Thursday, the first time in more
Man About Town THINGS TO WHICH I’D LIKE ANSWERS
Every once in awhile I find myself reflecting on many of the things I see and hear about going on in our country. I think back to the prescient words of Abraham Lincoln, “a House Divided cannot stand” and it fills me with a sense of anxiety and concern I have difficulty expressing in words. Here are a few of those things I don’t really understand and would welcome answers to: 1. New York City voted to defund the police. than a month that it has reported fewer than 300.
Community outbreaks, however, remained much higher than the county’s own threshold for loosening certain health restrictions. The 24 outbreaks were more than three times the number the county has set as a “trigger” for tighter public health restrictions. The trigger is seven or more outbreaks in a 7-day period.
It was not clear Friday how the county would adjust restrictions were it removed from the state’s monitoring list while still reporting more new community outbreaks than it considers acceptable. Another potentially problematic number reported Friday was new cases. The county reported 406 new cases, far exceeding the average 240 new cases it would need to report to avoid tripping a new warning signal with the state.
The county reported 4 percent of total tests on Thursday were positive. The 14-day average percentage of positive cases was 4.6 percent — far below the county’s target of less than 8 percent. Former Escondido City Council Member Tom D’Agosta Dies

With so many Americans unemployed during this pandemic, why is it that our elected representatives in Congress and the Senate, as well as State Governors and City Mayors continue to receive full salaries and benefits? And where does it go after it leaves the toaster? •••• Here is a simple experiment that will teach you an important electrical lesson. On a cool, dry day, scuff your feet along a carpet, then reach your hand into a friend's mouth and touch one of his dental fillings.
Did you notice how your friend twitched violently and cried out in pain? This teaches us that electricity
can be a very powerful force, but we must never use it to hurt others unless we need to learn an important electrical lesson. •••• It also teaches us how an electrical circuit works. When you scuff your feet, you picked up batches of "electrons", which are very small objects that carpet manufacturers weave into their carpet so that they will attract dirt. The electrons travel through your bloodstream and collect in your finger, where they form a spark that leaps to your friend's filling, then, travel down to his feet and back into the carpet, thus completing the circuit. AMAZING ELECTRONIC FACT:
If you scuffed your feet long enough without touching anything, you would build up so many electrons that your finger would explode! But this is nothing to worry about unless you have carpeting. •••• Although we modern person tend to take our electric lights, radios, mixers, etc. for granted, hundreds of years ago people did not have any of these things, which is just as well because there was no place to plug them in. Then along came the first Electrical Pioneer (EP), Benjamin Franklin, who flew a kite in a lightning storm and received a serious electrical shock. This proved that lightning was powered by the same force as carpets, but it also damaged Franklin's brain so severely that he started speaking only in incomprehensible maxims, such as, "a penny saved is a penny earned." Eventually he had to be given a job running the post office.
After Franklin, came a herd of Electrical Pioneers whose names have become part of our electrical terminology: Myron Volt, Mary Louise Amp, Jimmy Watt, Bob Transformer, etc. These pioneers conducted many important electrical experiments. Among them Galvani discovered (this is the truth) that when he attached two different kinds of metal to the leg of a frog, an electrical current developed and the frog's leg kicked, even though it was no longer attached to the frog, which was dead anyway. Galvani's discovery lead to enormous advances in the field of amphibian medicine. Today, skilled veterinary surgeons can take a frog that has been seriously injured or killed, implant pieces of metal in its muscles, and watch it hop back into the pond -- almost. Paying for Schools
Schools are essential and the need to educate our children is not negotiable. The 2020-21 budget package maintained school funding based on 2019-20 attendance levels, which essentially placed a funding cap on all schools, even those experiencing high levels of growth. Prior to enactment of this year’s education trailer bill (SB 98), school districts were “held harmless” over declining year-to-year enrollment. If the district lost students, it would still be funded at last year’s level. If the school added students, it would receive more money. But under SB 98, a growing school does not generate more money. If the school has 10% or even 100% more kids, it receives funding based on the same number of students it served last year
Each student typically generates an average of $10,300 through the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). A recent analysis projects LCFF costs that are more than $500 million lower than the amount budgeted in 2020-21 due to this change in attendance funding. Let me be clear – this money for schools was included in the budget, but unless the law is changed, growing
schools will not receive it. These restrictions fall on charter schools as well as traditional schools in areas experiencing rapid growth, such as southwest Riverside and north inland San Diego Counties in my District. Conversely, areas not experiencing much growth, like Los Angeles and San Francisco, may see little impact.
That’s why I joined many of my Assembly colleagues in a letter to Governor Newsom asking that this funding formula be revised. In his budget-signing message, the Governor indicated that he recognized problems with this formula and that changes would be necessary. The money for schools was included in the budget. It’s imperative that we change the law to ensure funding for all our growing schools. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Back-To-School
Over the last four months there have been many unknowns regarding COVID-19, but as time has progressed, we have learned a lot too. We’ve learned that those with underlying health conditions are more susceptible to the virus. We’ve learned that kids are rarely affected by the virus and we’ve learned how to better treat the virus. We need to thoughtfully apply what we’ve learned how to prevent the spread, how to treat, who are more and who are less vulnerable to long term impacts. We need to apply that knowledge and learn to live with Coronavirus. This does not need to be a choice. We can have both public health, safety and our economy open.
There will always be risks with life and we need a smart approach to safely and responsibly allow openings for business, churches, and schools. My whole life as an airline pilot people have taken the risk boarding the plane. I make calculations based on dozens of different variables in order to make sure we get to our final destination, safely. We have 1200 beds set aside for
COVID patients, in San Diego County. Even at our peak we’ve never used half of them. Which is great news. Our numbers continue to trend down and only about 10% of those in the hospital are there for the Coronavirus.
Because of this, we must get our kids back to school! I believe, especially for younger students, in-person instruction is the best way for most kids to learn. It is dangerous to not have schools open. School is where, often, parents learn kids need a hearing aid, or they need glasses and, sadly, schools are the number one reporter of child abuse. We are denying our children ESSENTIAL mental, social and physical outlets by closing our schools during arguably the most critical time in their developmental lives. The closures of our schools will have damaging effects on the future.

summer of 1932. With Fonda's encouragement, Stewart took a screen test and received a sevenyear contract with MGM at $350 a week.
The Legendary Film Star Who Was a General
His early interest in flying led Stewart to gain his private pilot certificate in 1935, and commercial pilot license in 1938. He often flew cross-country to visit his parents in Pennsylvania, navigating by the railroad tracks. Nearly two years before the Dec. 7, 1941, Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Stewart had accumulated more than 400 hours of flying time.
General James Stewart
After training, Stewart wanted assignment to an operational unit rather than serving as a recruiting symbol and aircraft ferry pilot. In early 1942, Stewart was asked to make a film to recruit the 100,000 airmen anticipated the air corps would need to win the War. The Air Corps recorded his voice for narration. The short recruitment film “Winning Your Wings,” appeared in movie theaters nationwide resulting in 150,000 new recruits.
There were a number of Hollywood actors who joined the armed forces during World War II, but none of them equaled the service of James Stewart. He was first in uniform and the only movie/service member to rise in rank from private to full colonel in only four years
Stewart went from actor to B-24 pilot completing more than 35 missions, then returned to Hollywood to continue his career. But, he didn’t cut his ties to the military. He spent active duty time during Vietnam War and stayed in the Reserves and worked his way through the ranks to major general . James Maitland "Jimmy" Stewart was born May 20, 1908. He is among the most honored and popular stars in film history. A major Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer contract player, Stewart was known for his distinctive drawl and down-to-earth persona which helped him often portray American middle-class men struggling in crisis. Many of the films he starred in have become enduring classics. He was born in a small-town, (Indiana, PA), to a hardware store owner … like many film characters Stewart portrayed.
Before the War, Stewart was nominated for five Academy Awards, winning one in competition for The Philadelphia Story (1940). Later, he received an Academy Lifetime Achievement award in 1985, and in 1999, Stewart was named the thirdgreatest male screen legend of the Golden Age of Hollywood behind Humphrey Bogart and Cary Grant. The American Film Institute also named five of Stewart's films to its list of the 100 best American films ever made.
A shy youngster, Stewart held a dream of flying enhanced by the legendary Charles Lindbergh. Ironically, he would portray Lindbergh 30 years later on film.
After college, Stewart and Henry Fonda became roommates and close friends in New York over the
In 1940, Stewart was drafted into the Army and became the first major movie star in uniform. Stewart was a private, but applied for an Army Air Corps commission and Service Pilot rating as both a college graduate and a licensed commercial pilot. At 33, Stewart was almost six years beyond the maximum age restriction for Aviation Cadet training. After a lot of red tape, Stewart received his commission as a second lieutenant shortly after the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor.
Stewart was concerned that his expertise and celebrity status would relegate him to instructor duties "behind the lines.” Stewart, 33, appealed to his commander, a 30year-old who understood his situation, recommended by then Captain Stewart to the commander of the 445th Bombardment Group, a B-24 Liberator unit. To inspire the unit, Stewart flew as command pilot in the lead B-24 on several missions deep into Nazioccupied Europe. Promoted as a major, then lieutenant colonel, his official tally of mission credits while assigned to the 445th and 453rd Bomb Groups was 20 more. For combat action, Stewart received two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the French Croix de Guerre, and an Air Medal with three oak-leaf clusters.
Years after the War (on July 23, 1959) Stewart was promoted to USAF Reserve brigadier general. During his active duty periods, he remained current as a pilot of the B36, B-47 and the B-52 bombers of the Strategic Air Command. In 1966, Brigadier General Stewart flew on a B-52 bombing mission during the Vietnam War. After 27 years of service, Stewart officially retired on May 31, 1968. He received more recognition upon his retirement: the U.S. Air Force’s Distinguished Service Medal, and in 1985, President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom, simultaneously advancing Stewart to the rank of Major General. He had a legendary career in film and television and is considered one of the greatest of Hollywood actors. James Stewartdied on July 2, 1997.

Honor Flight San Diego is Asking "How Will You Help Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive?" - The second Sunday in August was the National Spirit of `45 Day. It was a day to celebrate the end of WWII; and in a non-COVID environment we would have been celebrating with our veterans in a large-scale ceremony and mini-reunion. Sadly, that had to be canceled this year.
The nation remembered the 75th Anniversary of the End of WWII August 14, 1945. We felt it was important to our veterans to remember them, honor them, and let them know that we will continue to Keep Their Spirit Alive. After all, they are our Greatest Generation! Honor Flight San Diego hosted a virtual ceremony on Tuesday, August 11 at 9:30am, held on the flight deck of the USS Midway, with no audience, and it was available to view it through Facebook Live at: HFSD Facebook. The program included

Chorale
Awards
Final
Scholarships - The RB Chorale, under the direction and leadership of Pat Bean for the past 46 years, is disbanding. This extremely difficult decision was made primarily because of financial reasons and associated obstacles in retaining rehearsal and performance space. The 120+ member group had reached this decision earlier this year and had planned for one final concert in June, but restrictions due to the COVID-19 virus prevented this from happening. A key part of the Chorale’s mission was to raise monies for graduating high school seniors who wish to continue their pursuit of a musical education at an academic institution of higher learning. The Board of Directors recently held virtual interviews and heard several talented students perform so that final scholarship awards could be granted. As always, these young musicians did not disappoint, and the Board was thrilled to be able to divide $10,000 between four of them. Additionally, once the Chorale’s dissolution is final, any remaining funds will be distributed to them as a supplemental award.
The first award went to Evan Zhou who graduated from Del Norte High School and will be a freshman at Princeton this fall. He plans to study politics and obtain a certificate in music. Evan treated us with a difficult violin piece by Tchaikovsky which demonstrated

his proficiency. He is a National Merit Finalist, National AP Scholar, and Debate Team captain. He received several 1st place VOCE awards and is co-concert master of the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra. He is 1st violin in the String Bean Quartet, and previously with Equinox, winning several state level competitions.
Melanie Athans also received a scholarship which she plans to use this fall as she attends the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music at California State University, Long Beach. Melanie sang a moving aria by Handel which conveyed a depth of emotion and expression that was quite professional. Her strong connection to music and people will help her achieve her goal of becoming a choral director after she graduates. During her years at Mount Carmel High School she was active in musical groups and theater and enjoyed performing in a variety of productions. Dillon Halpin received a scholarship for his skillful playing of the flute. He has focused on this instrument for the past 8 years after beginning piano studies at the age of five. Recently graduated from Mira Mesa High School, Dillon plans to attend the University of California at Santa Barbara this fall and pursue a degree in conducting and someday become a college pro-

fessor. He is a top scholar, a member of the Wind Ensemble, orchestra and marching bands, a water polo player, and a lifeguard. He is a 4-year member of the San Diego Youth Symphony and has numerous Honor awards.
Phoebe Olszewski is also from Del Norte High School and is another accomplished violinist who performed a piece by Mozart. She also graduated from Del Norte High School and will attend St. Olaf College this fall to begin her premed studies. Phoebe will also study violin performance and hopes to someday pursue research in the healing power of music. She is a top scholar, co-concert master of the Mainly Mozart Youth Orchestra, and has received numerous state level competition awards. She interns at Palomar Hospital, performs at local nursing homes, and is an equestrienne. Although the historic decades of RB Chorale performances have come to a close, it leaves a lasting impression on the community. When Pat Bean invited any interested community singers into her home in 1974 and 16 people attended that first evening, she began working on a vision that ultimately became the RB Chorale. Her inspiration, dedication, and passion over the years has resulted in granting over $300,000 in scholarships to over 200 students. The organization has also supported the community by sponsoring the RB Idol annual competition and generously

Oceanside Senior Anglers Take Marines Fishing - One of the community service arms of the Oceanside Senior Anglers Foundation, Anglers 4 Military, recently took 28 Marines from 3D LAAD Battalion from Camp Pendleton on a three-quarter day boat from Helgren’s Sportfishing in Oceanside Harbor. The captain of the Oceanside 95 found plenty of rock cod reds for the Marines to experience. Every Marine caught and took home fish. “Our Anglers 4 Military trips are completely cost free to the Marines, including tackle, bait, and meals,” said Ken Harrison, OSA Foundation President. Members of the Senior Anglers served as deck hands, giving advice, helping to hook up, and offering whoops and hollers of support when a fish was landed. Marine GySgt. Mario Guadarrama explained that his Marine unit, 3D LAAD – Low Altitude Air Defense – trains for combat use of Stinger missiles. The weapon can destroy enemy low flying targets – jets and helicopters with accuracy and precision. Through the training given at 3D LAAD, a Marine and his unit can unload the shoulder-fired weapon from a Hum-Vee, set up, lock on, and deploy the enemy target within eight seconds.
“Its great to see young Marine men and woman out enjoying themselves for a day on the water fishing,” said OSA Program Director Jim Mauritz. “Its one day they can relax and don’t have to think about the duties of defending our country.” “The OSA Foundation raises funds to support cost-free fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for kids, scouts, and military,” said Harrison. “Our 501c3 nonprofit Foundation raises funds through club raffles, corporate and private donations, and the generosity of our members,” said Harrison. “We’ve seen a huge decline of interest in outdoor sports over the years. We know that with these trips, we’ve exposed numerous adults and kids to our sport. A few lifelong anglers will be born,” added Harrison. Once COVID restrictions are lifted, anglers over age 40 are invited to the monthly meetings of Southern California’s largest senior fishing club, held at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane, at 9:00am, on the first Tuesday of each month. Visit OSAnglers.org.

The Negro population ( not a hate word but the proper name for a race on our planet, as is Caucasian a proper name for " white " people ) is swelling rapidly while the Caucasian population is rapidly falling behind.
When the Negro population becomes the majority our government will become a socialist state (if not sooner )and the president, congress and the entire government will head up a new country called Afmerica.
President Trump will not be reelected as the Democratic party will assure that this will not happen. President Trump will probably be the last Republican president this country will ever see.The East and West coasts of our nation are very heavily populated with hard core Democrats who will find it easy to out vote the demising middle of the country. So there you have it. The future Afmerica will become a third world power, and revert to something you could not even imagine today.!!
What can be done about it ??? Not a thing-- you and yours and existing companies and businesses have thrown in with the liberal movement to survive and what you can look forward to is open borders, higher and higher taxes, fewer jobs, dangerous living conditions and a standard of living that hits the bottom. Fast forward to today, there are 4.6 million cases of coronavirus reported; the panic level is one of mass hysteria covered 24/7 by the news cycle and Trump is blamed! Wonder why that is?

ism is good and, in fact, a better economic system than capitalism. They have been taught this in our colleges and universities but their professors must have been absent on the days they were asked to enumerate those nations where socialism has succeeded. Accepting socialism as an economic system is, in essence, admitting you cannot compete in the real world. You are essentially saying “I am willing to give up my liberty, my religion, my dreams and my property as long as the State (government) commits to taking care of me.” Accepting socialism is tantamount to accepting failure even before

Oliver is a sweet cat who love playing with toys. His chasing, catching and bounding will entertain for hours. Oliver has a history of eating foreign objects (hair ties, string) and shows signs of overstimulation, so he needs a cat savvy home with people who understand cat body language and will make sure he doesn't eat any foreign objects. He’s good at cat napping, watching your window TV and likes a little petting too. Our staff can recommend ways for Oliver to engage in productive playtime. A person of Influence. It might not be a word you generally think of when describing yourself. Think again. Everyone has influence. You might not speak to a crowd of hundreds or thousands, but each time you have a conversation, you influence others. In relationships, you have influence – whether as a friend, colleague, child, parent or coworker. You have influence. In describing His followers, Jesus used terms like salt and light to describe our influence. Salt can serve a lot of purposes… from preserving something to adding flavor.
Jesus said “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.” (Matthew
He also said we are to be the “light of the world”. He said “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14). Light changes darkness. It illuminates. I love the phrase “that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven”. That is the result of sharing God’s love and light.
You have influence. It’s all in how you use it. As a child of God, use it to glorify God.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones Let the Staycation Begin!
There’s a whole lot to love about beautiful North San Diego County that we’re all lucky enough to call home! The #WithLoveNorthCounty campaign was developed, in partnership with San Diego North Economic Development Council, Innovate 78, Chambers of Commerce, Main Street Associations, North County cities and the San Diego Tourism Authority, to highlight local hotels, amenities and activities to give local residents great staycation ideas close to home.
Each week, #WithLoveNorthCounty promotes a different place or activity in San Diego County on social media, inspiring residents to plan their own mini getaways. It’s a great way to support local businesses and still feel like you’re getting a fun summer vacation in, even if you had to cancel your original out-of-town plans. Take a peek at the full list of featured properties and activities at www.sdnedc.org/withlove-nc and get busy planning your next North County staycation! And if you want to stay really close to home, plan a little ‘daycation’ at one of our beautiful San Marcos parks or trails. We’ve got more than 290 acres of parks to explore. Take your pick at www.san-marcos.net/parks.
Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,
I was given somewhat of a preview of SANDAG’s 5 Big Moves. If you are not familiar it is the grand plan for a public transportation system in San Diego county. It was a long brief and a lot of analytics were used to come to the proposed plan and price tag. It was priced in 2020 dollars to be about 128 Billion dollars. I don’t know about you, but I can’t get my head around that amount of money.
I lived in areas that had mature public transportation systems that made it easier getting around rather than dealing with traffic. And I know that public transportation keeps cars off the road, and so reduces greenhouse gases etc. And I would even say that it is necessary for a modern city and county. But there is no getting around, it is a lot of money. So, I’m writing this to make you aware of this concept that is in its early stages. This will be a big decision. Please follow it and be engaged as a community. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac

Bubbles and Boats: Water Is Fun! - Alta Vista Botanical Gardens recently hosted children and families for the monthly Kids in the Garden class with "Water is Fun!" Masked and distanced, children and parents delved into a variety of activities to encourage water conservation and enjoyed using water. The kids were blowing bubbles with strawberry baskets; testing what will float and sink, and constructing boats; painting with water and watercolors, and discovering melting and evaporation; in addition to working with worms and compost. Farmer Jones provided directions and materials for the class. Family membership in Alta Vista Botanical Gardens is $60 per year. The class is included free with AVBG family membership, and is also open to the public. The Gardens are open every day with 13 acres and plenty of trails and hillsides for a great workout. Plants,

These Orphaned Elephants Need Us - The San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy is on a Journey of Hope. Your continued support means the world to us as our teams around the globe continue to save critically endangered species relying upon us to survive. Elephants are in trouble. Poaching and habitat loss have taken their toll on elephant families across Africa. We are working around the clock to
save them, but we can’t continue these critical efforts without you. Your tax-deductible support rescues, rehabilitates, and safely reintroduces orphaned elephants back into protected native habitats.
Your gift will help sick and desperate elephant orphans get the lifesaving care they need at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary, our partner orphanage in Northern Kenya. This one-of-a-kind care center is a safe haven for elephants that are too young to survive without the protection and care from their moms and families. When the elephant orphans arrive, they're sick and often traumatized from witnessing the loss of their herd and families. Some don't seem strong enough to make it through the night. Little do these orphans know that you've just started them on their journey to hope. While we can never replace their family, you offer them a new one. Your support gives the new arrivals a peaceful place to rest as dedicated caretakers tend to their every need. With help from San Diego Zoo Global veterinarians,

Several of our customers have been hit in a new wave of “social engineering” aimed at getting users to refund an alleged “overpayment.” There are many variations of this scam but the common theme is getting you to believe they have deposited too much money in your account and they need you to give some of it back. Don’t do it. No matter how convincing they are. It’s a scam. The money they claim was mistakenly deposited to your account did not come from them; usually it was transferred from your own savings account. the challenge is raised. It is the complete opposite of the principles upon which America came into being and which so many have sacrificed their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor to create. 18. Can anyone tell me why the hell you receive a tax refund if you are on welfare? How does that happen? •••• Had a greet Friday night experience last week.
A delightful dinner at The Flying Toad, 113 W. Grand Avenue, Escondido. Patio dining at its best . . with exciting gourmet food, great service and a great atmosphere. I had the Lobster Roll (with tons of lobster), Evelyn had the Chicken Pot Pie and Friedrich Gomez had the Kobe Hamburger (which he raved about all night long!)
We had an early dinner (5pm) as we planned on an early arrival at Pala Casino so we could take in “The Rat Pack” Tribute Artist Show saluting Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Dean Martin. A leisurely drive north on I-15, taking in the sights of the bouldered mountains on both sides
The Covid19 crisis stopped the Win10 upgrade fever that characterized the first quarter of 2020. Win7 still runs 20%-25% of America’s Windows PCs. Banks, commercial and Internet sites have delayed service denial plans for Win7 users for the time being but we expect another upgrade stampede later this year. If you still have Win7 or Win8 you need to get your upgrade soon, while the upgrade is still a “labor only” cost.
ports, DVD-R/W, card readers, webcams, wireless interface and wireless keyboard and mouse. The only wire is the power cable, as “refurbs” they sell for $300-$450 in our shop.
We cherry pick our “enterprise refurbs” at our source in LA. These Win10 notebook and desk top PCs are in excellent condition. (Nome’s “born again” PC rack features our in-house refurbished Win10 trade-ins from $150 to $300). These are ideal low cost solutions for both stand alone and Internet tasking. Also large screen monitors from $50. If you need a high performance PC for a special application we can help you design it and then build and test it for you.
Before you buy a new PC from a big box retailer or the Internet consider this. Dell, HP and Apple may have American names but when you buy their new PCs, much of your money leaves the USA goes to the country that designs and builds their PCs, in most cases, your money goes to China. When you purchase a Dell or HP “refurb” all of your money stays right here in America, most of it in your home town supporting local jobs and merchants.
Today more than ever it’s time to think of ways we can help each other. No one else is going to do it.
Covid19 reversed nine years of declining PC sales with its work and school from home requirements. Over the past decade engineering and development efforts on PCs have concentrated on making them cheaper and more energy efficient, not faster. Most PCs born with Win7 are as fast as new Win10 retail PCs. Consequently upgrades and “refurbs” have become an important part of our business. We can take your Win7 PC, install an SSD (solid state drive) and upgrade it to Windows10 for less than $200. It will run circles around a brand new $500 or $600 retail PC. The same is true for our enterprise “refurbs.” For half the price of a new PC these “refurbs” are higher in quality, reliability and equal or better in performance. Many home and business users are “net-meeting” so we now stock webcams and headphone sets. AIO (All in One) PCs have become very popular. The entire Win10 computer is contained in the 22-24 inch screen. USB

We arrived at the beautiful Pala Casino at about 7:15, shown our seats, very comfortable spaced for social distancing, very close to the stage so we could see and hear the artists with no difficulty. The show started just a few minutes late. Scheduled for 8pm it got underway at about 8:10 and ran for an hour and a half of non-stop entertainment.
The tribute artist that portrayed Frank Sinatra nailed it! You’d have though “ol’ Blue Eyes” had come back to serenade us. “Sammy Davis, Jr.,” resembled the original Sammy and gave a performance that closely echoed the memory of “the one and only.”
The Dean Martin artist sang a lot of Dean’s songs, and told several jokes . . jokes that seemed to have been originally told back “in the good old day.” Non-stop entertainment. A beautiful outdoor venue with top service and hospitality.
We’ll be going back for more of the Tribute Shows. They are great!

Living Large in North County
The focus of “Living Large” has always been on ferreting out those “specials” and “deals” among the local bars and restaurants. Focusing on ways to get out of the house and enjoy a meal and a couple drinks without blowing the family budget. Intense competition among the areas two hundred bars, restaurants and bistros allowed us to pick and choose from an ocean of daily specials and happy hour menus. Nearly every establishment offered some sort of discount dining. Covid19 changed everything.
Whatever your opinion of the way California is handling the Covid19 pandemic, good or bad, it is what it is. Since mid-March California restaurants and bars have endured constantly evolving micro-management from California’s government bureaucracy. Sadly many establishments were forced to close, some permanently. Today “Living Large” applauds those establishments making the extreme effort to survive State imposed restrictions in the hope that normalcy will someday return. A drive through Restaurant Row is both heartbreaking and inspiring. In some ways it resembles a UN refugee camp with the tents, umbrellas, fences and outdoor furniture and fixtures. The constant cleaning and disinfecting, the
kitchen and wait staff brought back in to work. There are no more “happy hour” menus and “daily specials.” These establishments are fighting to stay alive. “Living Large” salutes the heroic efforts of these establishments to serve and survive. The ownwers, managers and employees struggling to stay in the game deserve our support.

So whether its breakfast at J & Ms, Charlie’s Family Restaurant, or Mama Kats, hummus and pita at Landon’s, Marguaritas with Nachos Grande at The California Mining Company, a bowl of Fish Soup and Rock Bread at The Fish House Vera Cruz, or any of the dozens of North County restaurants making the extra effort, make it a point to get out of the house sometime this week and show these hard working folks a little love.

As the new orphans at the sanctuary begin to heal, something extraordinary begins to happen just outside. The sanctuary's herd gathers to let them know that they're not alone, and that they once again have a family.
