Just a few weeks ago, on August 7, 2019, I finished researching this true story which astounded me beyond words. Weeks have since passed and, yet, the emotional saga continues to resonate deeply within me. I wish to share this powerful story with you now.

was no ordinary Iowa-born boy.

Even while still young in years, he already knew and mapped-out what he wanted to be in life. That dream never changed. At age 15 he had already penned a school class paper outlining his life’s dream to spend his remaining adult years as a Navy SEAL. Later, as an older student attending Rockford High School, young Tumilson amazed many Iowa citizens by excelling in a wide variety of athletic events: high school wrestling, running marathons, competing in triathlons, even martial arts wherein he accu-

mulated a wide range of colored belts. In everything Jon Tumilson did, he did with full conviction and for an expressed purpose in his young years. All of his athletic endeavors were actually in preparation for his Special Armed Forces career. So in time, it was only natural that he finally accomplished his most cherished goal in life: he became a proud Navy SEAL, just as he planned to be.

Tumilson also had a Labrador retriever named “Hawkeye.” His dog shared a special bond with the

SEAL. Even during lengthy separations when Tumilson was on active duty, both Hawkeye and the Navy SEAL shared an inexplicable bond that seemed to transcend human reason and normal companionship. Neither time nor space could diminish the love and loyalty between them.

Chinook helicopter was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by a Taliban insurgent. Along with Tumilson, 30 Americans and 8 Afghans were killed in the crash.

The Iowa SEAL’s body was returned to his native soil. On August 19, over 1,000 mourners gathered to pay final respects to their native son. As with everything he did in life, Tumilson had already earned military campaign medals, commendations, and high honors, including the Bronze Star with a “V” insignia for “Valor,” a Purple Heart for prior military injuries during battle, and a host of other commendations for valiant combat services in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Among the crowd of mourners, sat his dog, Hawkeye.

As the hour-long services continued, something most unexpected happened. Something out of the ordinary.

Something which shocked the entire assemblage, all of whom suddenly ceased in their weeping and mourning. In attendance were Governor Terry Branstad and Senator Charles “Chuck” Grassley, President pro Tempore of the United States Senate, along with fellow SEALS, distinguished lawmakers, and highranking military personnel.

(2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.

(3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

What transpired next, left over 1,000 people completely thunder struck!

It was Jon Tumilson’s cousin, Lisa Pembleton, who first saw the moment slowly unfold before everyone’s disbelieving eyes.

Jon T. Tumilson’s beloved dog, Hawkeye, unaccountably, rose up on all four paws, then slowly stepped forward towards his fallen master’s coffin.

In cathedral silence, and without hesitation or guidance, the dog walked. Finally reaching the flag-draped casket, standing alone and resolute, Hawkeye instinctively laid down next to the Navy SEAL’s coffin, appearing to be guarding his slain master.

The emotional and galvanizing scene was photographed by Pembleton, and the undying power of love it professed, launched a global following on the internet, as well as worldwide media coverage from the four corners of our planet.

The photo even inspired a special episode of the hit CBS TV series “NCIS.” According to the show’s producer, Scott Williams, “It all started with that photograph.” The episode, called “Seek,” became the evening’s top-rated show.

(6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning.

He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

Important again: (7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN. More routine....

(8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces, and brings them to the table.

(9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all: (10) Everyone PRAISES and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

(11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed 'her night off.' And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women.

THE PUPPY NOBODY WANTED.

This month of August, 2019, marks the 15th anniversary of this most extraordinary true story of how the unlikely power of a dog’s love can sometimes defeat the hand of death.

The year was 2004 and Kevin M. Weaver of Florida was on his way to pick out a puppy. Weaver’s friends had told him of the cutest little beagle pup at the local pet store and the former Staff Sergeant from the U. S. Air Force decided to see for himself.

It would prove to be a day like no other in the life of the ex-military man and now flight attendant.

Little did Kevin Weaver know at the time that he would look into the very eyes of a tiny, forsaken and fragile puppy that would, miraculously, save his life.

While staring at the little dog, something mysterious seemed to overcome Weaver. Somehow, looking at the tiny canine orphan stirred Weaver’s heart.

But Weaver seemed puzzled inside.

How could such a cute bundle of joy be so unwanted?

The little female beagle pup had already been purchased twice by customers only to be returned to the same pet store each time. Such a questionable resume should have turned Kevin Weaver’s heels to look elsewhere in the store, yet, he

Only months old, her name was Belle, but to Weaver she would be known as “Belle Weaver,” because she was now family – and no power under Heaven and Earth – would separate them. They completed each other’s lives.

However, life was never perfect for the former Air Force Staff Sergeant.

He constantly struggled with lifelong diabetes. And it seemed to be getting worse with time. And slowly taking its toll on him. Finally, the affliction of diabetes began torturing Weaver with occasional episodes of seizure when he would be rendered unconscious. It was a terrifying ordeal, to awake from a seizure, on the ground, slowly regaining consciousness and, sometimes, looking up at total strangers trying to help.

Then one day, while working as a flight attendant, an acquaintance who frequently flew on his flightroutes, suggested that Weaver give

Stolen Wallets

nice looking, college-age girls will come over to your car or truck as you are packing your purchases into your vehicle. They both start wiping your windshield with a rag and Windex, with their breasts almost falling out of their skimpy T-shirts.

Wal-Mart has wallets on sale for $2.99 each. I found even cheaper ones for $.99 at the Dollar Store and bought them out in three of their stores. Also, you never get to eat at McDonald's. I've already lost 11 pounds just running back and forth from Lowe's, to Home Depot, to Wal-Mart. So please, send this on to all the retired men that you know and warn them to be on the lookout for this scam. (The best times are just before lunch and around 4:30 in the afternoon.)

his pet, Belle, specialized training as a medical assistance dog. It seemed an odd request at first, after all, Belle was his pride-and-joy and closest friend, yet he never thought of such an ambitious project for her.

That’s when Weaver paused and thought out loud, “Why not?”

Belle seemed to live her little life for her master, Kevin Weaver, always waiting to pounce on him and going uncontrollably happy upon seeing him come home!

Now, the young inexperienced dog would be enrolled in a specialized training program to become an official Diabetic Alert Service Animal.

Instinctively, she seemed to know that her training was to save her ‘daddy’ from future diabetic seizures.

Science has long struggled to better understand the instincts dogs seem to have in their love and protective nature to keep their masters safe.

The ‘how and why’ of these animals to be able to exhibit such powers and skills still remains within the boundaries of unexplained phenomena. However, scientists and medical experts seem to know how to train such service animals to bring out these mysterious, inherent canine skills.

In Belle’s case, the little pup began

Belle’s schooling was to detect and ‘sense’ when Kevin Weaver’s blood sugar-level became too low or too high.

But how?

Canine research has long shown that as a ‘tracking hound,’ beagles and bloodhounds, along with sporting dogs such as retrievers and pointers, as well as spaniels and German Shepherds, have an even keener sense of smell than most other breeds of dogs. In Belle Weaver’s case, her sense of smell was estimated to be, literally, a thousand times more sensitive than any human being! Amazingly, her training skills included licking Weaver’s nose to smell his breath!

Belle was keenly trained to ‘read’ or ‘sense’ his ketone level. According to medical scientist and researcher, Dr. Jennifer Cattet: “While these odors are undetectable to the human nose, the dogs’ olfactory sensory systems (its keen sense of smell) can easily discriminate these vapors from the environment.”

Dogs, such as Belle, have more than 220 million ‘olfactory receptors’ in their noses, while humans only have 5 million.

The accuracy level of these alert dogs is astounding! As researchers at the University of Virginia point out, “Early warning detection capabilities of these Diabetic Alert Dogs can tell their masters 20-45 minutes in advance of a diabetic problem that needs correction.” These ‘alerts’ from such trained dogs are, at least, 91.7% accurate – usually higher!

Instinctively, Belle knew she was now officially in charge of keeping her master, Kevin Weaver safe at all possible costs. Such diabetic service dogs are given a variety of methods to warn their masters in advance of low (hypoglycemia) or high (hyperglycemia) blood sugar levels before they become dangerous and a possible seizure develops. The Diabetic Alert Dog’s early detection allows the owner to quickly take the proper steps to get their blood sugar levels back to a normal and safe healthy range.

Home Firearm Safety/Basic Handgun Class Announced - On Sunday, September 1st from 10am to 2pm, a monthly 4-hour familiarization and safety class is offered for anyone anticipating the purchase of, or who already owns a handgun. Despite Belle’s impressive graduation with very high honors as a Diabetic Alert Dog, Weaver – at first – was unaware of the full extent of Belle’s amazing talents.

He would soon find out.

Eight months after her training, Kevin Weaver would soon learn a life-saving lesson from his own, expertly-trained dog.

His life would delicately dangle in the balance and become fully dependent on his dog, Belle.

On February 7, 2006, while at his Orlando, Florida, home, Weaver – feeling fine – noticed something radically different in Belle’s behavior.

Weaver recalls the day: “One day, all of a sudden, she started scratching at me and whining at the same time.”

Belle was insisting that something was wrong and frantically ‘signaling’ her master. Belle soon grew anxious and distraught. However, since Weaver was feeling fine, he made a dangerous mistake: “I misread her signals. I thought she

On August 12, at 3:59 p.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department received a call about a possible shooting that occurred in the 2700 block of Via Juanita. It was further reported that witnesses heard a popping sound and found one male in the alley with what appeared to be a gunshot wound.

On arrival, officers found an 18year-old male who reported he had been shot following a meeting with another male.

The suspect then fled the area in a vehicle.

The Fire Department transported the victim to an area hospital with nonlife threatening injuries.

Officers searched the area, interviewed numerous witnesses, collected evidence and are actively working to locate the suspect.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

So sorry to hear about Peter Fonda passing away at age 79.

I went to school with Peter at the University of Nebraska, Omaha Campus, back in the late 1950’s.

He was a quiet kid, very nice. I liked him. Never did care for his sister, Jane. Admired his father, Henry, greatly.

Peter and I were in a drama class together. I’d like to claim I taught him everything he knows but that would not be quite accurate. We all knew, however, as did Peter, that the name “Fonda” would certainly get him into show business doors that were shut to ordinary people.

I was there when Peter lost one of his best friends, Stormy MacDonald, heir to the Zenith fortune, who had committed suicide

One of the great unanswered questions. We often don't know what goes on in people's minds, no matter what their station in life is.

My college years were not fun years. I was too busy working. I was the all-night disc jockey at KBON Radio from midnight to 8am . . . then my first class at school was at 9am, last one at noon.

Then off to a hardware store where I worked the afternoon shift.

Somehow, I managed to cram in 3 or 4 hours of sleep before heading back to work at KBON at midnight.

Sometime, during my years at Nebraska I decided to go out for football. I was a pretty decent quarterback and was a fairly elusive runner. But that was sandlot football, played in our neighborhood vacant lots with no uniforms, no pads, no equipment other than a football.

This was a different league.

The officers purchased $13 worth of the product, which tested positive for cannabis, the lawsuit states.

The dispensary’s operation violates San Marcos Municipal Code, which prohibits the operation of a business without a business license, and does not allow commercial cannabis operations, the city stated in the lawsuit.

In September 2018, the city filed a lawsuit alleging numerous violations of city code, and stating that those could result in fines of up to $15.51 million.

On August 8 of this year, Superior Court Judge Timothy Casserly sided with San Marcos, granting the city’s motion for summary judgment against both the landlord, MDLK Development, and Escondido’s Finest Dispensary.

On Tuesday, City Attorney Helen Peak said that the council conferred with the city manager and city attorney in closed session, and provided direction for a potential settlement.

The city awaits a response from MDLK Development.

I remember one day at practice we had an exercise where two of us would lie down on the ground on our backs, head to head and, at a signal, would roll over and slam into our opponent and try and force him to the ground. On my first attempt my opponent was somewhat bigger than me, not a lot but enough to represent a challenge.

The signal came, we rolled over and went at each other. SLAM! I hit him as hard as I could.

And I saw stars!

"Well, this isn't much fun," I thought. "Not sure I want to play this sport."

My football experience in college brought forth a story that my dad always laughed about and, in company, would say . . . "Butch (my nickname as a kid), why don't you tell us the story about your football experience?"

ure he was thinking . . . "Lord, deliver me! This is supposed to be a brilliant young student? And this is what I have to work with to build a team?"

Had I responded, "Quarterback," it would not have been so bad. But I would never have made the team. I was still too small (I think I was 120 lbs when I graduated from high school; now, post military, I was, maybe 140, 145 lbs. - still too small for college level football.

And I didn't like getting hit or hitting. If all I had to do was throw the ball, run the ball, fine. But no fair hitting or tackling me. I don't like it.

We had a spring game during which I sat on the sidelines. Never got in the game and was kinda glad I didn't. I heard those shoulder pads pop and the thud of helmet upon helmet and would wince at the thought of absorbing that much punishment - whether I was the hitter or the hittee.

After the spring game I turned in my football gear and retired, undefeated, from the sport. (If you join a sport but never play then you never win nor do you ever lose.

Thus, you are undefeated. Right?)

wanted to go outside to go to the bathroom. I put her outside, then brought her back in. That’s when I had the seizure!”

Pack animals, such as canines, inherently think of their masters, simplistically, as their ‘daddy’ or ‘mommy’ and, as such, will often lay their own lives down to save them. Being physically placed outside in the backyard by Weaver, Belle became distraught and knew her trained duties were not being fulfilled. She seemed confused at her master’s actions.

Once she was let back inside the house, it was too late.

A 34-year-old Kevin Weaver first felt the symptoms of nausea then, suddenly, collapsed to the kitchen floor, completely unconscious and in extreme danger of slipping into a life-threatening diabetic coma.

Weaver’s roommates would not be expected home for at least another 5 hours after his abrupt fall to unconsciousness. Such a length of time would, most certainly, mean death for Kevin Weaver.

Loved Red Skelton!

Just read the Red Skelton cover story and it totally captivated me! I felt I was right there experiencing how things unfolded in his legendary life. Another Skelton Lover

My dad and grandfather both were huge Red Skelton fans and we used to watch him on TV re-runs togeth-

linoleum kitchen floor, Belle, would not disappoint. Her powers of unconditional love would, remarkably, release her pure instincts and allow her formal medical training to take over.

This was the moment of truth. This is what she was trained for.

Belle was left alone with only her training and instincts to guide her.

There was no other person or trainer to help, assist, or guide her now, as when she was being tested in her schooling. She was suddenly left alone to try and remember her training as a Diabetic Alert Dog. Belle knew, instinctively, that her master was dying in front of her and that this was no training exercise.

But, even Weaver, who lay helplessly in the midst of a dangerous seizure episode, was unaware of the full extent of Belle’s ‘super powers’ which she had mastered. In her graduate medical training program – which she had passed with flying colors – Belle had mastered another critical skill in her arsenal of diabetic tricks. She was, unbelievably, trained to bite down on Weaver’s specially-made cell phone pad, biting hard and holding down with her teeth the number “9” which signals a “911” emergency call!

Belle knew this was no simulated exercise in her specialized medical training class. The 17-pound beagle knew this was the real emergency she had trained so hard to meet.

Instincts told her she must not fail –

er (he's still on cable!). I'm too young to have seen any of his shows "live" on television (I turn 16 on October 9th) but he was amazing and way ahead of his time. My friends and I still watch him and we even had a "Red Skelton" sleepover at our friend's house. We like him cause he makes goofy faces and has silly looking hair and we get hysterical when he wears baggy pants and falls down a lot like when he's Freddy the Freeloader!!!! Did you know that the Escondido Library has a whole bunch of Red Skelton tapes? Well they do and we check them out all the time cause there worth seeing over and over again!!

Thanks for writing the Red Skelton cover story. We all screamed and got excited when we first saw the cover!!! We grabbed a bunch of copies and took them home for our family and friends. And some of them I keep in my room!!! I framed one of them and its now hanging on my bedroom wall!!!!! I wish there were other comedians like him today. He's my favorite of all time.

She did and, true to her training, she then bit down hard on the number “9” and held it down till human voices came to her ears.

These voices she now heard on the cell phone were also a ‘cue’ in her Diabetic-Alert training courses.

This feedback was positive-reinforcement and she knew she was doing the correct sequence of actions.

The voices Belle heard were from Emergency 911 dispatchers on the other end. The dispatchers from the Florida Police Station heard a steady volley of dog-barking over the cell phone. Trained in all emergency situations, the dispatchers quickly tried talking, then listening for any human voice to reply.

It would not come.

Only the steady, nonstop barking from a solitary, frightened, 3-yearold beagle pup who, once again in her young life, felt strangely alone and abandoned, for the third time in her young life. to type it all out from the given pages. The deadly ordeal had passed. But the heroic dog, Belle, was yet to meet her own fate.

Belle Weaver, the heroic beagle dog that saved her master’s life, would be spotlighted in both national and world news! It was a most astonishing event by a most unlikely hero, and the international press clamored for more details for an astonished and fascinated public.

Some wire services simply carried the headline caption: “DOG MAKES 911 CELL PHONE CALL TO SAVE OWNER’S LIFE!” Belle was now summoned to the nation’s capitol at Washington, D. C. and boarded a plane, along with her daddy, Kevin Weaver, to receive a special VITA Wireless Samaritan Award. And the heroic and celebrated pup did not travel in the Cargo Section of the plane which would have separated her from her beloved master. Nope, she stayed with Kevin Weaver on the plane ride, as officials had arranged.

After all, this was no ordinary animal that had been plunged into the world’s spotlight.

The special award waiting for Belle is presented by the CTIA Wireless Foundation each year: “To honor those who use their wireless phones to save lives, stop crime or help in other emergencies.”

It would be a milestone achievement because Belle would become the first animal ever to receive the VITA Wireless Samaritan Award.

Arriving at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport, on Monday, June 19, 2006, both Weaver and Belle were taken the short 3 miles to Washington, D. C. where festivities were waiting for the Florida beagle dog. Weaver wept tears of joy as the red, white, and blue ribbon was slipped over her neck with the award-winning medallion dangling for all to see.

Even Weaver’s U. S. congressman was there to bestow a special Certificate of Recognition for the little hero dog, that seemed to be enjoying all the attention and fanfare.

Still wearing her well-earned Medical Assistant dog vest, she seemed to love all the adoration and flash bulbs flashing before her little eyes. The little eyes that, despite the distraction all about her, still kept a protective look upon her master.

From that fateful day when he almost died, Kevin M. Weaver would learn a most valuable lesson from his dog. As expressed in his own words, “Every time she paws at me like that (and whines), I grab my meter and test myself. She’s never been wrong!”

It had been a long journey from that little Florida pet shop to the Capitol’s footsteps. A most unlikely journey few could have imagined. When little Belle flew roundtrip on an airplane for the first time.

It all brought back a flood of memories for Kevin Weaver. He had long thought of Belle as close family, not just a dog. Often referring to her as “Belle Weaver.”

Kevin recalls that after being released from the hospital that fateful day, after Belle Weaver had saved his life, he headed straight to a steakhouse – where both he and his Belle had a memorable feast together. A celebration of renewed friendship and life-saving love.

Says Weaver, at the time, “She loves me and I love her.” Then, pausing a moment with great emotion, he struggles to continue: “She’s my best friend, that’s for sure.”

Wagging her tail, panting, and excited as if understanding every word from Kevin, Belle Weaver just wishes to sit on her daddy’s lap. The one place, in all the world, she would most choose to be.

The once-lonely, unloved, and unwanted orphaned pup, twice returned by previously owners who refused to keep her, now found unconditional love and acceptance.

Remarkably, she has blossomed into a genuine miracle-worker.

Saluted, adored by a mass public, and decorated at the nation’s capitol. At long last, Belle sits happily on Kevin M. Weaver’s lap, where she rightfully belongs.

Despite Belle’s loyalty, love, and medical assistance, the diabetes that relentlessly ravished Weaver’s body would, eventually, prove to be too much. On October 2, 2010, Kevin M. Weaver of Deltona, Florida, died unexpectedly in his home. He was 39 years old. He is survived by his parents, twin sister, three brothers, and many relatives.

And of course, Belle Weaver, his loyal dog that became more family than pet.

On October 11, 2010, Weaver’s obituary column included these words: “Kevin was always smiling, and the special bond with Belle was just beautiful. We’ll miss you but I know that you are in a better place.”

Belle never left Kevin Weaver’s side, even in later years when they worked together at Disney World at Orlando, Florida. Disney coworker, Joan Brake, remembers, “We at Port Orleans so enjoyed Kevin and Belle working here. Kevin and Belle are missed.”

Help for First Responders

Our first responders make lots of sacrifices to protect the rest of us and this can take a toll on them, as well as their families. In a 2016 behavioral health study, roughly three-fourths of the surveyed peace officers reported having experienced a traumatic event, but less than half reported it to their agency.

Even more troubling, about half of the officers reported personally knowing a peer who changed after experiencing a traumatic event, and about half reported knowing an officer who committed suicide.

First responders are trained to deal with very stressful, emotional and life-threatening situations. The culture is natural to internalize mental/emotional stress. Removing the stigma encourages them to be proactive within the workplace and reach out to peers to improve their mental and emotional health.

The Iverson Foundation for Active Awareness (IFFA), founded by Ashley Iverson, the widow of CalFirefighter Cory Iverson, age 32, who died in 2017 battling the Thomas Fire, assists first responders by creating strong support systems for those dealing with Post Traumatic Stress. IFFA seeks to decrease anxiety and depression, improve relationships in personal and professional lives, and most importantly, reduce the suicide rate members. gone.

Animal behaviorists and trainers know that dogs love their masters so deeply, that the dogs often feel abandoned or left behind when their owner dies. Canine research scientists reveal: “That’s how these dogs see and feel about their companions. They don’t understand why they are abandoned.

They don’t comprehend why he does not come back to get her.”

After her master’s death, little Belle was surrounded by Kevin’s surviving loving, caring family.

But to the specially-trained and heroic Diabetic Alert Dog, Belle deeply sensed Kevin Weaver was missing and she, once again, instinctively felt abandoned, as when she was a tiny puppy.

I have joined Assemblyman Timothy Grayson (D – Concord) to co-author two bills, AB 1116 and AB 1117, which provide peer support and counseling for firefighters and police officers dealing with emotional stress. This bi-partisan legislation passed the Assembly in May, and is now progressing in the Senate.

Our first responders’ burden is heavy. We owe them our respect, support and cooperation, as well as our heartfelt thanks for their willingness to put their lives on the line for our safety each and every day.

have time to party. I had a girl friend, Mary, whom I would marry.

She'd come over to the house in the afternoon/early evening. We'd visit.

Then I'd go to sleep, getting ready to go to work at midnight.

The neighbors must have thought that my dad was the one dating Mary because it was he who drove her home most ever night - giving me another half hour of much needed sleep.

After Stormy MacDonald's death I don't remember seeing Peter Fonda on campus again. He may have come back but if he did, I never saw him again. (I have since learned he is credited with having graduated from what was then known as the University of Omaha.)

After my college years I continued my life with a 25 year career in radio broadcasting, owning a fishing/boating operation, and, currently am editor/publisher of a weekly newspaper, The Paper, which I have owned and operated for over 20 years . . . and, yes, I'm beginning to think of retirement. For some strange reason I just don't have the energy I had 30 years ago. I wonder why that is? You don't suppose I'm getting old, do you?

Delighted to report that my dear friend, Arie DeJong, is out of surgery and on the mend.

Arie had knee replacement surgery last week and was up and walking by the end of the day he had surgery.

Knowing Arie, he’ll probably be entering a marathon in a few weeks. The man is constantly go, go, go.

Also pleased to report that Cathy Dagostino-Hamilton is also home from the hospital and out of the surgical suite. Here’s hoping she’ll soon be teaching young adults how to do pottery. She’s a whiz at it and has procuced some beautiful pottery herself.

Escondido Senior Anglers Played Big Part in Bass Record – Most anglers throughout Southern California have heard about the record breaking large mouth bass caught at Escondido’s Dixon Lake in April.

It officially became a new International Game Fish Association’s record for the women’s 4-pound line class, at 11-pounds, 8-ounces, almost tripling the previous record.

During Escondido’s annual Kiwanis Trout Derby, Temecula resident Tracy Hartman caught the large fish on a trout rig casting from shore in about 20 feet of water.

“They put the fish in a tub of water and brought it up to our weigh-in station,” said Ron Parker, one of the Senior Anglers of Escondido’s weigh masters. The club provides the official scales and weigh-ins for the lake’s derbies. Immediately after the weigh-in, the bass was released back into the lake.

The rangers started investigating the IGFA size and records, and the paperwork needed. The IGFA needed more than just photos. They needed certification, witnesses, and most of all, an accurate scale. “We took our scale to the San Diego County Department of Weights and Measures to be certified,” said Parker. Sure enough, lucky for Hartman, the Senior Anglers scale was certified as right on the money – totally accurate to the 100th of a pound. “I think we’re the ones that got her the record in the books,” said Parker.

America’s Worst U.S. President: Andrew Johnson

Of all the U.S. Presidents in our history none would be more controversial and disrespected than Andrew Johnson.

was Johnson born Dec. 29, in 1808, Raleigh, N.C., abject into He poverty. never attended was school, apprenticed as a tailor, then ran away working in several frontier towns before settling in Greeneville, Tennessee.

Johnson was the epitome of the “selfmade” man. In Greenville he went in business as a tailor, then in politics by serving as city alderman and then mayor before being elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives in 1835. In 1843, Johnson was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives where he served five two-year terms. He became Governor of Tennessee and in 1857, was elected to the U.S. Senate.

As Southern states, including Tennessee, seceded to form the Confederacy, Johnson remained loyal to the Union, the only senator from the South who did not resign his seat.

When the Civil War broke out President Abraham Lincoln appointed Johnson as military governor of Tennessee after most of the state had been retaken. In the election of 1864, as a War Democrat and Southern Unionist, Johnson was a logical choice as Lincoln’s running mate. In his re-election campaign Lincoln wanted to send a message for national unity. The Lincoln-Johnson ticket won easily, but when Johnson was sworn in as vice president in March 1865, he gave such a rambling, nonsensical speech that was so bad, afterward he secluded himself to avoid public ridicule.

Less than two months later, he became the 17th U.S. president when Lincoln was assassinated.

With the war over, Johnson favored a quick restoration of the seceded states, but his plans did not give protection to the former AfricanAmerican slaves. As a result, Johnson came into conflict with the Republican-dominated Congress. “radical” the and Johnson Republicans in the Congress clashed at almost every turn. Similar to today’s political atmosphere, the impeachment process was a way of getting rid of the president.

By late January 1866, Johnson was

convinced that winning a showdown with the GOP radicals was necessary to his political future – both for the South’s “Reconstruction” and for his re-election in 1868. Johnson would have preferred a showdown with Congress over legislative efforts to give citizenship to AfricanAmericans living in the District of Columbia, but to the president's disappointment, that measure stalled in the Senate before he could veto it.

Secretary of War Edwin Stanton was known to be an able and hard-working cabinet member, but difficult to deal with. Johnson both admired but at the same time was exasperated by Stanton’s decisions regarding Reconstruction. In combination with Gen. Ulysses Grant, he worked to undermine Johnson's Southern policy.

Congress passed the “Tenure of Office Act” restricting Johnson's ability to fire his Cabinet members.

When he tried to fire Stanton, Johnson was impeached by the House. He narrowly avoided conviction and removal from office when the Senate acquitted him by just one vote. Thirty-five senators voted "guilty" and 19 "not guilty," falling short by a single vote of the twothirds majority required for conviction.

When Southern states returned many of their old Congressional leaders to Washington, they worked for socalled “Black Codes” depriving former slaves of many civil liberties that Reconstruction called for. As a result, Congressional Republicans, in the majority, refused to seat legislators from those Southern states and advanced legislation to overrule their actions. Those GOP legislative efforts halting many of Southern legislators’ proposed bills were vetoed

by Johnson, but the Republican controlled Congress merely overrode him, setting a pattern of conflict for the remainder of his presidency.

Johnson’s most controversial stand as president was his opposition to the 14th amendment, which gave citizenship to all former slaves. His strong opposition to federally guaranteed rights for African-Americans continues to be widely criticized by historians. While in office, Johnson's main accomplishment was presiding over the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

After failing to win the 1868 Democratic presidential nomination, Johnson left somewhat in disgrace.

He is regarded as one of the worst presidents in American history.

Upon returning to Tennessee, the former president sought political vindication by winning another U.S. Senate seat. He returned to Washington in 1875, making him the only former president to serve in the Senate, although his tenure was short-lived. Johnson suffered a massive stroke and died July 31, 1875 -five months into his new U.S. Senate term.

This is a thumbnail sketch of a dynamic, fast-moving period in U.S. history. Johnson’s story reads like an explosive novel. A Hollywood film, “Man From Tennessee” starring Van Heflin, told part of this fascinating story.

Escondido Senior Anglers Review Summer Fishing – At their September 13th meeting, the Senior Anglers of Escondido will present the club’s annual Summer Fishing in Review. The Pastor Says...

We talked, we sang, and as we were ready to leave we prayed. That’s why I am telling this story. Doc loved to pray when I knew him 20 years ago. He still does. His daughter asked him to pray and it was as if all the ravages of disease and age fell away. Oddly, his voice is still strong. Professorial. Pastoral.

Pastor Tom Fry, Retired Church of the Nazarene On a recent trip to Arizona, my wife and I stopped by Flagstaff to see a former parishioner. “Doc” was a good friend and one of the wisest, most knowledgeable, most spiritual men I have ever met.

After working on freighters on the Great Lakes, he finished college, then seminary and earned a PhD in philosophy. He pastored, taught college philosophy, and then worked at the top secret “Skunkworks” for Lockheed Corporation. It was pivotal work in the Cold War era.

Doc is 103 years old. He gets around well with a cane, is strong of body, but his hearing and vision are failing him, and he seldom knows his daughter on her daily visit. Thus, we didn’t expect he would know us, but, still, the visit was good.

You know the feeling you get when someone prays and the presence of God seems to envelope you? That’s how it was around the table that day. He prayed sincerely, genuinely.

With compassion and care. He was articulate.

Long ago, the Psalmist wrote, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you (Psalms 119:11). In Dueteronomy, in the Shema, the Lord commanded, “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.”

Only one phrase stands out in my mind. Doc, at 103 years, prayed, “Give us grace to serve you in the time we have left.”

Despite age, infirmity and disease, the Word, written on Doc’s heart long ago, perseveres. Once again, I learned something from my time with Doc.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones – San Marcos students head back to school

San Marcos students are saying goodbye to summer and heading back to school this week and next week. The start of the school year spells increased traffic congestion. Please plan ahead for delays, and know that the City has been working to implement multiple projects to improve traffic flow and safety on our roadways.

In July, we completed the installation of LED safety lights to increase visibility for motorists and pedestrians, increase energy efficiency and reduce maintenance costs. Additional traffic management system enhancements are on the way, including an upgraded traffic signal communication network and traffic controller replacements. Traffic signal improvements are also planned for Rancho Santa Fe Road and Grandon Avenue, along with intersection improvements at San Marcos Boulevard and Discovery Street.

Plans are also in place to reconstruct the State Route 78 overcrossing at Woodland Parkway, reconfiguration of on/off ramps, and the widening of Woodland Parkway, Barham Drive and Rancheros Drive.

Each week I engage with a spectrum of folks who are doing great things for our city and the surrounding community. It’s always hard to choose which ones to highlight for this column.

One that certainly deserves attention is the presentation by our county District Attorney, Summer Stephan, on her De-Escalation Training for our local police. In a nutshell, the training is designed to help officers recognize situations that might not follow the normal pattern. For example, a situation where the individual has mental illness issues, or might be suffering from autism. The idea is that the situation remains controlled and does not end in tragedy due to mis understanding or mis communication. I’m very excited about this effort because whenever there is a problem we always hear - someone should do something about this. And Summer Stephan is.

Two other people who deserve shout outs on this topic are Supervisors Gaspar and Desmond. They recognize that mental health is linked to homelessness and they are taking it on. Escondido is a beneficiary so the next time you see them – please say thank you.

“Times they are a –changing”

That was the name of Bob Dylan’s big hit 55 years ago in1964. The “changing” was in attitudes and mindsets during the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War. The lyrics were insightful and clear. The only problem was that listening to Bob Dylan sing tended to make my ears bleed. Well times are still a-changin and one of those changes is the burden of an increasing need for creating content on “social media.” As a result, at least for the time being we are cutting back our weekly column in The Paper from weekly to publishing only in the first and third issues each month.

The impact of the Internet on our day to day lives is almost beyond comprehension. We take it for granted but the Internet continues to influence the way we do even the most mundane tasks. Here at The Computer Factory we stubbornly stuck with the “old school” attitude that if you do a good job, “word of mouth” will ensure your business success. It took us a while to realize that “word of mouth” has a different meaning today, but it is just as powerful as ever. Today people “talk” to the Internet instead of their neighbors. They use the business “star ratings” derived from actual customer experiences to help them select a merchant. This year we began to work with Internet professionals to ensure that we use impactful “keywords” that elevate our internet presence, we’ve redesigned our Website and started encouraging our customers to give us positive revues. These efforts are beginning to show in our business and we thank our customers for they’re help.

For us the Internet/Amazon has been a great blessing. Price, deliv-

ery and selection are far better than our old “bricks and mortar” distributors could offer. The fact that virtually any computer component we might need is a day or two away enables us to keep inventories on only the most common items.
