Ah, romance!
Isn’t it wonderful?
A handsome groom, a blushing bride, all decked out in white, birds singing, church bells ringing, the wedding vows, the benevolent and smiling pastor, priest, rabbi, or alternative religious authority figure . . and those magical wods, “do you take_______ to be your lawfully wedded . . . “ Wait just a minute here.
That’s a scene from a movie and may not be an accurate reflection of what life really is. Are the days of the $20,000 and up marriage a thing of the past? Absolutely not.
But are they diminishing? Yup.
More and more people, and not just young folks, are opting to live together without benefit of a religious or legal blessing. Or, if getting married to do it quickly and inexpensively, in a civil ceremony. Nationwide, the figures are interesting.
It's no secret that marriage rates have been on the decline for decades -- in 2011, just 51 percent of Americans were married, compared to 72 percent in 1960. And new research predicts that marriage rates will remain at a historic low in the years ahead.
