Volume 50 - No. 38

By Gary Womble

It was Sunday morning, July 2, 1961, and Ernest Hemingway known as “Papa” to his friends and family arose early that morning. He and his wife Mary had just returned to their summer home in Ketchum, Idaho, a few days earlier on June 30, 1961. On that early Sunday morning Ernest Hemingway went straight to the kitchen where the keys to the small gun storage room in the basement were hanging. Hemingway then as quietly as possible slipped down The Paper - 760.747.7119

the stairs and into the basement where he opened the storage room. He chose his favorite shotgun, a W.C. Scott and Sons double-barrel 12 gauge. He then grabbed some shells, closed, and locked the door of the storage room and went back upstairs. He crossed the living room to a small entrance hall about five feet wide and six feet long with oak-panel walls and a tiled floor.

Once there Hemingway put a shell into each chamber of the W.C. Scott & Sons shotgun. Ernest lowered the gun butt to the floor leaning the

gun at a slight angle because of the barrel length. He put the barrels of the gun in his mouth, his right hand on the double triggers, and without hesitation he pulled them firing one barrel. Mary, who was asleep in the front bedroom heard what she said sounded like someone slamming a drawer loudly.

Ernest Hemingway, some say the greatest American author in U.S. history, had committed suicide just nineteen days short of his 62nd birthday. Mary found him in a robe and pajamas with the shotgun

beside him which had one chamber fired. He was covered in blood and quite literally unrecognizable.

Life Magazine erroneously reported that Hemingway used a Boss shotgun. But the gun was a W.C. Scott & Sons 12 gauge as mentioned in a book about Ernest’s firearms written by Silvio Calabi, Steve Helsley and Roger Sander. Both gun manufacturers shotguns have a price many thousands of dollars greater than what the average shotgun costs (e.g. Browning, Winchester). Hemingway’s entire

life from the age of five, when he received a Markham King air rifle, was centered on guns. He owned a myriad of firearms over his lifetime including a Thompson sub machine gun he once used to scare sharks away from his boat and a Marlin he had caught. The authors of the book about Ernest’s guns traced the shotgun used in Hemingway’s suicide from the police report to a metalworking shop. The owner of the metalworking shop was charged with the responsibility of cutting it up into several pieces. Because of the gun’s history and significance, the owner kept one small part of the trigger mechanism as a keepsake. Ernest Hemingway is considered by many as one of the greatest writers in the history of mankind. He is also one of the very few writers to have won both a Pulitzer Prize and a Nobel Prize. The list is short and besides Hemingway includes Sinclair Lewis, Eugene O’Neill, Pearl S. Buck, William Faulkner, John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, as well as Toni Morrison.

Even today it remains a travesty that this brilliant writer with such an active mind ended his life in total despair. There were various speculations by friends, colleagues, the public, and eventually his family as to why he committed suicide. His doctors from the Mayo Clinic attributed it to personality disorder

and depression. But this literary giant left no letter or note to explain the tragedy.

It was widely known that his family, including his grandfather, had a history of suicide which many felt may have predisposed him. His father, a physician in Oak Park, Illinois, Clarence Edmonds Hemingway committed suicide in 1928. Ernest had sent his father a letter telling him not to worry about the financial difficulties he was having, but his letter arrived later the same afternoon after his death. Hemingway was devasted by the loss of his father and casually commented to his then wife Pauline, “I will probably go the very same way.” His sister Ursula would commit suicide in 1966, and his younger brother Leicester killed himself in 1982. His granddaughter Margaux Hemingway later committed suicide in 1996 by drug overdose. While working as an ambulance driver during World War I Hemingway helped many wounded Italian soldiers to safety and was subsequently awarded the Italian Silver Medal of Bravery. During World War II Hemingway was a war correspondent and after the war’s end he was awarded a Bronze Star. He arrived in Europe in May of 1944 and returned to Cuba later in 1945 along with fourth

wife-to-be, Mary Welsh. While in Europe he accompanied U.S. soldiers during the Normandy landings, and came within a short distance of Omaha Beach. He later commented that he saw the first, second, third, fourth, and fifth wave of landing troops before he saw anyone get off the beach. Later that year he observed severe fighting in the Battle for Hurtgen Forest. Hemingway was renowned for his ability to put into words what he witnessed and what the soldiers went through to preserve our freedoms. Contrary to the Hemingway legend he was not the first man into Paris, and he did not liberate the Ritz Hotel. While in Paris he did meet with friends Sylvia Beach, Pablo Picasso, and he saw and rekindled a friendship with Gertrude Stein.

Before going to Europe, he assisted the war effort by using his beloved boat named Pilar, a 38-footer with a 12-foot beam, to search for German U-boats. He convinced the Cuban government to help him refit the Pilar, which he intended to use to ambush German submarines off the coast of Cuba. Later it was widely said that while he did travel around the island to find submarines for the most part it was just a drunken fishing party with his friends. This may not have been the best idea in the world because Hemingway’s boat was equipped with bazookas, 50 cal. machine guns, various rifles, and hand grenades. He did, however, use this to obtain much more gasoline than normal citizens were

allowed. While he did not get to attack a German U-boat, he did report sightings on several occasions of German vessels in the general vicinity of Cuba. Ernest used the boat to make three trips to the Bimini islands where his fishing, drinking, and fighting exploits drew much attention and remain part of their history. In addition to fishing trips on Pilar, Hemingway contributed to scientific research which included collaboration with the Smithsonian Institute.

Ernest had known Castro for some time, but the war between Fulgencio Batista’s regime and Castro’s guerrillas would eventually make it impossible for Ernest and Mary to stay in Cuba. The Batista regime was never friendly to the Hemingways, and it was reported some believed that Ernest had been helping Castro. Supposedly one of “Papa’s” closest friends from his days covering the Spanish Civil War for the North American Newspaper Alliance, was a man named Lucas who was killed by Batista’s soldiers in 1958. Prior to his death Lucas used Hemingway’s boat several times to ferry guns and other weapons of war to Castro’s guerillas, supposedly with Ernest’s approval. During 1957 Ernest struck up a friendship with a young writer for the Miami Herald named Denne

Petitclerc. He had written “Papa” a letter expressing how much his work had meant to him as a child growing up an orphan. Hemingway was moved and sent Denne an open invitation to visit him and Mary at Finca Vigia any time.

Following Lucas’ death, the FBI worked with the Batista regime to catch Hemingway with guns on his boat. In at least one instance they boarded his boat and searched for weapons but found nothing. Ernest’s friend Denne Petitclerc, the young writer from the Miami Herald, was on board when the Cuban Coast Guard boarded the Pilar. After several visits by Denne to see Hemingway in Cuba but prior to this incident, while still in Miami, the FBI approached Petitclerc about potentially reporting on Hemingway. Denne turned them down because he was not a fan of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and his “personal national police agency.” While on a visit to Cuba in 1958 Petitclerc was “asked” to meet with Santo Trafficante at the Sans Souci nightclub in Havana. Without Ernest’s knowledge Denne met Trafficante who was at that time head of the Florida Mafia. Trafficante owned nightclubs, casino’s, hotels, and brothels in Cuba all of which were highly profitable.

He also had a good relationship with Batista because of the profitability of his businesses in Cuba. Santo Trafficante told Denne that someone high up in the FBI had it in for Hemingway, and that Hemingway was constantly under FBI and Batista’s surveillance. When Denne returned that evening to Finca he told Ernest what Trafficante had said about the FBI. He asked why the FBI had such an interest in him, which at first he had thought was based on “Papa’s” relationship with Castro. But Ernest confessed to Denne that he had told a story about Hoover at a yacht club meeting where all the guests were from the upper echelon of American society. The account had been told to Hemingway years earlier by a young man in the FBI, who was invited to J. Edgar’s home. Allegedly they went to the basement along with Clyde Tolson, Deputy Director of the FBI, and Hoover’s longtime companion. Once in the basement Hoover made sexual advances toward the young agent while Tolson filmed the entire episode.

together, eating lunch every day together, and taking vacations together. When Hoover died of a heart attack at the age of 77, he left his estate including his home to Tolson. Hoover’s vendetta against Ernest Hemingway was probably based on this premise but was shrouded in “Papa’s” relationship with Castro. Hoover ruled the FBI with an iron hand from 1924 until his death in 1972 a total of 48 years. The power he asserted was reportedly sometimes based on his knowledge of compromising events and actions by important and powerful people. No one should have absolute control over a governmental agency for 48 years, so something sure as hell kept him in power all that time. It was not his winning personality because most of the eight U.S. Presidents he served did not like him, but they also did not dare fire him.

Ernest and Mary were sorry to leave the estate they loved (Finca Vigia which was just 15 miles from Havana), good friends, animals they cared about, and Cuba itself. Ernest’s dog had been cruelly killed by soldiers of the Batista regime a couple years earlier which had left Hemingway very saddened by the loss. During 1959 he wrote a series of articles for Life Magazine about the bull fights in Spain and specifically about two brothers who competed not only with the bull but also with each other. He had to travel to the various bull fights throughout Spain and subsequently was required to write the articles all of

which was exhausting to him. Those articles would one day turn into a book published posthumously in 1985 titled “The Dangerous Summer.” When they left Cuba behind, Hemingway was not a well man, suffering from severe liver problems, depression, and physical exhaustion. He was sinking into despondency, and suicide had crossed his mind. His health had been significantly impacted by the craziness of that summer in 1959. But the many years of hard living and drinking had also taken a terrible toll on him. They traveled to their summer home in Ketchum, Idaho, which is near the neighboring city of Sun Valley and the Wood River Valley. The region has been a seasonal home to the rich and famous since it was first brought to public attention by Hemingway in the 1930’s. Today this area is famous among ski enthusiasts with both Bald Mountain and Dollar Mountain having excellent skiing. Even though the Hemingways had left Cuba for Idaho Castro had not nationalized Finca until after the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion. After the fiasco of the Bay of Pigs Finca Vigia was nationalized by the Cuban government, complete with Hemingway's collection of "four to six thousand books.” After Hemingway’s death President Kennedy arranged for Mary Hemingway to travel to Cuba where

The Paper California PUC Postpones Vote on Power Line between Escondido and San Marcos

Following a large number of phone calls from residents in opposition to the project, the California Public Utilities Commission postponed a vote Thursday on a controversial 12-mile power line project that would connect San Marcos and Escondido. Residents in the San Elijo Hills area of North County are opposed to it. In a 5-0 vote, commissioners decided to take up the issue again on Sept. 24. San Diego Gas & Electric says the circuit, officially called the Tie Line 6975 project, is needed to improve service reliability and reduce electricity congestion in an area that has seen a population spurt, with more growth expected in the coming years. An administrative law judge for the CPUC last month issued a proposed decision recommending the project be approved. Attorneys for the city of San Marcos filed a response, disputing the decision.

A public comment period was held prior to the consent calendar and 39 residents of San Elijo Hills and nearby Rancho Dorado called into the meeting, which was conducted virtually to comply with COVID19 protocols.

Page 4 •

A portion of Tie Line 6975 would erect overhead power poles over San Elijo Hills and a neighboring development, Rancho Dorado. Some callers complained the towers and lines would mar the views and reduce property values but most worried a potential downed power line could ignite a wildfire in the neighborhoods that are in a high-fire threat district.

For more than 2 1/2 hours, 39 callers phoned in. Two residents cried while making their remarks to the commissioners.

After the comments period closed, Genevieve Shiroma — the commissioner assigned to the Line 6975 case — moved to have the item postponed until the CPUC’s next voting meeting, Sept. 24. The motion was seconded and then approved unanimously. The project’s critics want an Environmental Impact Report conducted and if the line is determined to be needed, it should be placed underground. SDG&E has estimated the project would cost $30 million to $35 million and placing the line underground would double or triple the price tag and the cost differential would be picked up by all the customers in the utility’s service territory.

Another 60 beds will be for Interfaith’s interim graduate lodging program, which Anglea described as temporary housing for people who have moved out of the nonprofit’s Haven House homeless shelter, no longer need recuperative care.

she met Fidel Castro and obtained her husband's papers and manuscripts in return for donating Finca Vigía to Cuba. Mary always said that Ernest had supported the revolution from the beginning and was friendly with Fidel Castro. Perhaps that friendship had a bearing on Fidel Castro’s acquiescence to Mary’s return to Cuba and for her to be allowed to bring some items back to Ketchum. In 1964 Mary contacted Jacqueline Kennedy and donated the Hemingway papers to the JFK Presidential Library.

Ernest was becoming more and more paranoid and his behavior was at times very strange and erratic. He told his friend, Aaron Hotchner, who visited for a fishing trip in November of 1960 that he was being constantly surveilled. “Papa” said to Hotchner, “it’s the worst hell. The goddamndest hell. They’ve bugged everything. That’s why we’re using Duke’s car. Mine’s bugged. Hell, everything is bugged. Can’t use the phone. Mail intercepted.” “Papa’s” feelings were discounted by both his family and his friends as him simply having paranoid delusions. It seemed that no one believed him and that they all thought he was simply losing his grip on reality.

Mary did her best to convince Ernest to get some psychiatric help, which he eventually did. Although the help he received in Ketchum did not improve his demeanor or help him to be less agitated and paranoid. Also, he continued to be depressed and antidepressants had only recently been discovered. Tofranil was a widely used antidepressant after it was invented in 1958 but nothing has been written about drugs Ernest may or may not have taken. Even if he were taking an antidepressant, he was still drinking heavily which would have worked to counteract the effectiveness of the drug. As time went by it was evident that Mary needed to convince Ernest to get some more effective help. She finally convinced him with the help of friends and their physician, Dr. George Saviers, to go to the Mayo Clinic and check in under an assumed name. Some social stigma was still associated with seeking and receiving mental health during help in the 1950’s and 1960’s. Originally Mary had tried to get Ernest to go to the Menninger Psychiatric Clinic in Topeka, Kansas, but he refused. Ernest agreed to go to Mayo because it would be less evident he was there for psychiatric treatment. The Hemingways returned to Ketchum after an extended stay in Rochester, Minnesota. Ernest had received treatment at the Mayo Clinic for depression and paranoia bordering on a paranoid psychosis. While at Mayo he received somewhere between twelve to eighteen treatments of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). It was initially reported that the ECT treatments he received made him even more depressed. Before going to

Page 5

Rochester, he had been absolutely convinced that the FBI and CIA were following him, and even checking his bank account. Hemingway's friend, Aaron Edward Hotchner, who was a novelist and playwright wrote that “Papa” took his own life while his wife slept at their Idaho home, because he was convinced every aspect of his life was being constantly surveilled.

At the Mayo Clinic Mary was outnumbered and eventually was convinced by Dr. Howard Rome, Ernest’s psychiatrist, and Dr. Hugh Butt an internist for her to take “Papa” home to Ketchum. Even though this had not worked in January of 1961 and they had to return to Rochester in April of that same year. She seemingly had no choice but to agree for them to return to Idaho. The trip home seemed arduous, so she phoned an old friend, George Brown, for help driving home. Brown flew to Minnesota and then drove them to Ketchum which took a total of five days to cover the distance. They arrived in Ketchum, Idaho, on the afternoon of June 30, 1961. Once back in their Ketchum home everyone seemed relaxed. Saturday evening, July 1, 1961, Mary was so overjoyed at being home and feeling that Ernest was much better she asked him to sing some songs with her. The last thing he said to her was, “good night my darling,” just before she went to bed. For several months after Hemingway took his own life, his wife would not admit that it was suicide. When she first found Ernest, the doctor had to sedate Mary because she was so distraught. In the beginning Mary said it was an accident, and that Ernest was cleaning his gun when the firearm discharged accidently. After a few months, however, she found the strength to admit that it was suicide and not an accident. This was difficult because she was very much still in love with “Papa” and had wanted to return to the happiness they shared in Cuba. She had worked tirelessly to convince Ernest to get help from psychiatrists as well as to eventually go to Mayo for treatment. Despite all her efforts nothing she tried had stopped him from taking his own life.

But some have questioned the treatment Hemingway received at the Mayo Clinic, and why they allowed him to return home despite Mary’s objections. Mary was at her wits end and tried desperately to get Dr. Rome and Dr. Butt to transfer Ernest to a psychiatric institution in Hartford, Connecticut. As mentioned, Ernest and Mary had initially returned home from Rochester in January 1961. Mary found him with a gun talking about suicide in early April of 1961 and immediately called Dr. George Saviers. Dr. Saviers came to their home and shortly “Papa” was on his way back to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minneapolis. Many of his symptoms as well as his genetic makeup were consistent with a diagnosis of

September 17, 2020 Hemochromatosis which can destroy your body and brain. It was a very treatable disease during this period by controlling levels of iron in the blood. As mentioned, Hemingway was given a large number of ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) sessions somewhere around twelve to eighteen separate instances. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in 1961 was a procedure in which electric currents were passed through the brain, intentionally triggering a brief seizure. Much of the stigma attached to ECT is based on early treatments in which high doses of electricity were administered without anesthesia, leading to memory loss, fractured bones, and other serious side effects. Electroconvulsive therapy can be administered either unilaterally, across one hemisphere of the brain, or bilaterally, across both hemispheres of the brain. The treatment became widely known in society because of the movie “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” where Jack Nicholson was given ECT. Italian neurologist Ugo Cerletti is known as the father of electroconvulsive therapy. He was experimenting with seizure induction in dogs by delivering electrical shocks directly to their head. Psychiatric legend holds that Cerletti was shopping at a butcher shop one day in Italy and noticed that the butcher would deliver an electrical shock to the heads of pigs just before slaughtering them. The electricity caused the animal to enter an anesthetized coma-like state. In 1938 Cerletti along with a psychiatrist named Lucio Bini developed the first ECT device. They administered the procedure to a diagnosed delusional schizophrenic with hallucinations and confusion. They noted that the new treatment seemed to work as they had planned, and electroconvulsive therapy was born. For their pioneering work on ECT, Drs. Cerletti and Bini were nominated for a Nobel Prize in Medicine in the 1930s, but they did not win. In the 1960s, psychiatrist Thomas Szasz spearheaded what came to be known as the "antipsychiatry movement" which attacked psychiatry on multiple fronts. Two of the primary issues centered on the use of ECT as well as insulin induced coma therapy (ICT) both of which he viewed as inhumane and torturous. Dr. Thomas Stephen Szasz was Professor of Psychiatry Emeritus at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, New York. He authored a number of books including The Myth of Mental Illness (1961), and The Manufacture of Madness (1970), which set out some of the arguments most associated with the “antipsychiatry movement.”

Dr. Szasz was a staunch opponent of civil commitment and involuntary psychiatric treatment but believed in, and practiced, psychiatry and psychotherapy between consenting adults. As a result of Dr.

Szasz and an organization he cofounded called Citizen Commission on Human Rights and the “antipsychiatry movement” in general, both ECT and ICT fell out of favor in the late 1960’s and 1970’s. Although ECT today is again a widely accepted treatment for extreme mental disorders. Like Hemingway Dr. Thomas Szasz took his own life on September 8, 2012 to escape chronic pain he suffered as the result of a fall. As well as his position on what psychiatry had become, he also advocated for the right to suicide. Dr. Szasz was a vocal atheist and always remained vigilant to keep himself and his beliefs separate from all religions.

In the 1980s, Aaron Hotchner discovered that his friend, Ernest Hemingway’s complaints were found to be justified. Because when agents released their file on Hemingway beginning in the 1940’s following a Freedom of Information request his fears were shown to be true. The FBI were intensely interested in Ernest and findings in 1961 that the author was physically and mentally ill were reported to FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. They reduced their surveillance of him when he was admitted into the hospital. Although they did file a report of his diagnosis and the treatment he was receiving. The entire file obtained by the Freedom of Information request filled more than 120 pages. It detailed that over the years agents were assigned to follow him, they filed reports on him, tapped his phones and bugged his home. Hotchner has since said he regrets not taking Hemingway's concerns about the surveillance more seriously. In the years since Ernest’s death he came to realize that Hemingway recognized the surveillance and that it contributed substantially to his anguish and his suicide. The FBI file dated back to the 1940’s and had 90 pages from that time. The remainder of the pages were from the 1950’s and only one page was from the 1960’s before his death. Although it has consistently been reported that FBI files have a propensity to disappear or somehow get changed. Hemingway’s file was heavily redacted which was supposedly based on the need not to place anyone in harm’s way. Although anyone working for or with the FBI before 1961 would be in their late 80’s or even 90’s and probably stopped working altogether many years ago. The excuse seemed much too convenient. I am a stringent proponent for having a national police agency like the FBI as well as local and state police, but they should not be above reproach. The FBI was a power base as well as a political and personal vendetta vehicle for J. Edgar Hoover for over 45 years. The laws they broke and the Constitutional rights they ignored remains a national travesty. It was thought that once Hoover was gone the FBI would become what it was envi-

sioned to be. But over the years that has been found not to be true. Examples include their methods to arrest members of the Mafia such as allowing James “Whitey” Bulger to go free so he could continue giving them information about the Mafia all the while committing heinous crimes. Sammy “The Bull” Gravano was given a short prison sentence and then placed into the witness protection program despite confessing to 19 murders. Sammy got that deal because he testified against John Gotti who was known as “The Teflon Don” because he had three high profile trials which resulted in three acquittals much to the FBI’s chagrin. Last but certainly not least are Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and James Comey. The three of them are guilty of using a governmental agency for political reasons and should have been held criminally accountable. The FBI should absolutely be apolitical, and agents must be as objective as is humanly possible. If it could have been accomplished, his family and friends think Ernest Hemingway would have preferred to be buried at Finca Vigia. But alas it was not to be, and he is buried in Ketchum, Idaho, with a flat, unadorned slab for a marker. Mary who passed away in 1986 in New York was brought home to Ketchum and buried near her beloved “Papa.” To this day fans still leave flowers and bottles of liquor on his grave. Rule 5.f.3(y) Putts that stop close enough to the cup that they could be blown in, may be blown in. This does not apply to balls more than three inches from the hole. No one wants to make a travesty of the game. Rule 6.a.9(k) There is no penalty for socalled "out of bounds." If pennypinching golf course owners had bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The senior golfer deserves an apology, not a penalty. Rule 7.G.15(z) There is no penalty for a ball in a water hazard, as golf balls should float. Senior golfers should not be penalized for manufacturers' shortcomings. Rule 8.k.9( S) Advertisements claim that golf scores can be improved by purchasing new golf equipment. Since this is financially impractical for many senior golfers, onehalf stroke per hole may be subtracted for using old equipment.

Please advise all your senior friends of these important rule changes. •••• Two women were sitting next to each other at a bar. Now it’s up to the Governor

With the final adjournment of the Legislature on August 31, hundreds of bills were forwarded to the Governor, who now has until September 30 to decide their fate.

There’s often lots of controversy in Sacramento, but contrary to what may be a common impression, many bills pass with overwhelming support from both parties. This session was no different. For example, we passed AB 1710 (Wood) to allow pharmacists to administer FDA-approved COVID-19 Vaccines. We also passed AB 1577 (Burke) conforming state law to federal law to exclude CARES Act and Paycheck Protection Program loans from state income taxes. SB 1447 (Bradford) provides tax credits for small businesses that hire new employees, and in another effort to help workers and small businesses, we passed AB 1731 (Boerner Horvath) to ease the availability of the work sharing program so that workers can remain on the job. And SB 872 (Dodd) expands homeowners’ insurance protections during states of emergencies. Bills impacting animal welfare included SB 573 (Chang) which requires microchipping of shelter dogs and cats, along with AB 1974

(Gray & Chau) to help protect and advance the health, safety, welfare and aftercare of race horses.

We passed SB 803 (which I coauthored with Senator Jim Beall), to support a mental health peer specialist certification program for counties that wish to help workers dealing with mental health or substance abuse issues. Other bi-partisan bills included AB 2421 (Quirk) a bill to speed installation of standby generators for cell towers in hard-pressed rural areas, and AB 1138 (Gallagher), to require parental consent before an online user account can be created for a child. It’s now up to the Governor to decide the fate of these bills. If you’d like to request that any bill be signed or vetoed, the Governor’s office can be reached at: Contact the Governor Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

The Hypocrisy of Covid vs Economy

Everyday tens of thousands of people safely shop at big box retail and grocery stores where respectful San Diego shoppers obey the mask, social distancing and sanitation protocols. Churches, museums, restaurants, and the Zoo are now open, but to a limited 25% capacity. Legoland, street fairs, and wedding venues have yet to open while liquor stores and marijuana dispensaries operate unabated. While big box retailers thrive, many small businesses are not afforded the same opportunity to serve customers and put their employees back to work. If the safety protocols work for businesses with thousands of customers and hundreds of employees, why shouldn’t the same safety protocols work for all businesses? Under the guise of a reopening plan, the State’s latest action actually keeps many business sectors closed and workers out of work. San Diego County just got off the watchlist and the State, again, changed the standards.

The State’s tiered system is deeply flawed. Even if a vaccine is developed

and implemented, it would be statistically impossible to get to the least restrictive yellow tier, which only allows 50% capacity openings. The new criteria to get to yellow is one positive case per 100,000 people. Even a vaccine, when readily available, can’t guarantee those results.

The State’s new tiered system, disguised as a reopening plan, really keeps businesses closed and prevents people from earning income to pay for food and housing. It was simply a rearranging of the deck chairs on our economic titanic, and if changes don’t come soon, business owners will rise to the occasion and do the right thing. Let’s give them the opportunity to put our workforce back to work.

As carefully and as gently as he could, Joe worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot. The elephant turned to Joe, and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Joe stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled.

A Short Seymour History Story The ‘Pole Stretcher’

It was around 1952 … it was summer in Seymour and Boy Scout Troop 163 was preparing for a short camping trip. Mame Hart had bought her youngest son, Ronnie, an Army surplus eightman tent. It was a marvel to behold. The problem was setting it up. The accompanying tent poles were too short. No poles, no tent.

Ronnie and I were in his backyard trying to solve this dilemma. We walked across the street to his Dad’s Conoco station for some help. Pearl Hart shook his head in a perplexing fashion, nodding toward oldest son and Ronnie’s older brother Jack Hart for help. Jack who was the town’s International Harvester dealer was standing nearby. Interestingly enough, he was in direct competition with his father-in-law, Wade “Sug” (for Sugar) Wright, who was the area’s John Deere dealer and owner of one of Southern Iowa’s largest hardware store. Jack studied our problem as serious as anyone in that situation could. He shook his head and then referred to “Sug” up at Wright’s Hardware. Jack said we needed a “pole stretcher” and the only one in town would be up at his father-in-law’s hardware store. That sounded right to us.

Ronnie and I walked at a fast pace on the short trip to the town square and into the hardware store where “Sug” sat in his usual chair smoking a cigarette. He was noted for developing an extra-long ash which hung on the end of the smoking butt. We explained our predicament. “Sug” nodded, recognizing the problem. “Ya know the last time I used it was down at my John Deere shop,” he grunted, flicking that long ash from his cigarette. “I think Simon has that pole stretcher.” Ronnie and I sprinted out the door heading west to the John Deere shop.

It was one of those hot August afternoons with the sun slipping toward 4 o’clock. We wanted to get things set up before dark because the plan was to spend the night in that tent.

We found Simon Buck back at the rear of the shop working at pounding out dents from a wrecked 1947 Studebaker. When he bought that piece of junk, no one could believe Buck could save it. Anyone who had such thoughts didn’t know Buck. If anyone could solve our problem it would be this master of metal. He could fix or create anything that could be pounded or welded into shape. However, we didn’t know about how good he was at ‘stretching a pole.’

As we walked out the door, “Sug” yelled at us to be sure and ask Buck if he had any of that “Yellow Steam” left over from a recent paint job he was

working on. “Be sure and tell him I’m gonna need that steam by tomorrow.” Few people knew Buck’s first name was Simon. Everyone knew him as Buck.

Buck had a slight speech impediment. It wasn’t a physical thing, it was just the way he learned to talk as a youngster. Best way to describe it was you’d swear he was a “Cajun” from the backwaters of the Louisiana swamps. He grew up in the hills of nearby Missouri. He once told me his assessment of the variety of television brands, which were beginning to be sold in Southern Iowa at that time. “Day all gud, Tom. Some jest better den udders.”

We told Buck that “Sug” had sent us on our quest. We also mention the yellow steam. Buck shook his head as he was pounding out the Studebaker’s left front fender. He regretfully said all of the steam was gone, but the pole stretcher was still available, … but he didn’t have it. “By dod I gave that to Earl Montieth up at the Post Office,” he grunted, not taking his eyes off the fender. Ronnie and I were getting a little tired of running all over town, but we still had visions of being able to camp out that night. We pivoted and ran back up to the north side of the square. We found Earl sorting mail. It was Wednesday afternoon and the Seymour Herald was being put in post office boxes or readied for next day’s mail delivery. Earl was one of Seymour’s famed jokers. There was very little in which he didn’t find humor. His laugh could be heard all over the square. But, on this day he held his urge to laugh. With a straight face he told us that he had used the pole stretcher last Saturday, then took it up to Paul “Curt” Curtis’ garage for a job waiting for it.

Ron and I looked at each other, but were undeterred. Curt acknowledged using the device, but Zell Park needed for a job at his Chrysler-Plymouth dealership. Back across the square we went, but our run had turned into a brisk walk. Zell chuckled just a bit, then shook his head. He wasn’t sure whether Calvin Spurgeon, his body and fender man had finished with it. We sensed we were getting close.

Just as we were about to go next door to where Calvin was pounding out a wrecked ‘49 Lincoln hard-top, my Uncle Bill Morrow drove up wearing a slight, but concerned smile. He stopped us in our tracks. “Fellas, there’s no such thing as a pole stretcher,” he chuckled, but with a serious smile.

Bill couldn’t stand to see Ronnie and I being run all over town. By then, most of the merchants around the square knew about the joke. Everyone had a good laugh…it would be a long time before our venture was forgotten. But that was Seymour for those of us growing up in the fifties. It was an idyllic time with a wonderful group of friends and neighbors – and merchants. Looking back at those years it was proof to us that it indeed, it took a close-knit community to usher us into adulthood. Tom Morrow, SCHS Class of ‘58

over the railing, and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Joe's legs and slammed him against the railing killing him instantly. Probably wasn't the same elephant.

Famous Thoroughbreds; Many Raised in Valley Center/Pauma Valley Area - While the museum remains temporarily closed, this weekly column responds to questions that have been sent via telephone, mail or email. This week's column, number 20 in the series, is in response to multiple inquiries over the years about famous horses with a connection to the area. Given the number of horse owners, horse ranches and those who identify with the vaquero culture in the Valley Center-Pauma Valley area, it is no surprise that one of the most popular displays at the Valley Center History Museum is a permanent exhibition of thoroughbreds who were raised and lived in this area, most of whom have significant pedigrees. Honors won by local thoroughbreds include Horse of the Year, U.S. National Championship Stallion, a Preakness Stakes winner, and one who won four national championships. And then there were two with movie-star connections and another who gained additional fame after being featured in a comic strip and comic book. Here's a glimpse into some of the star players.

Fruitvale Road.

Atzimba: the legend of Seattle Slew, thoroughbred racing greatest champion and the only undefeated Triple Crown winner, she was bred on a family ranch on Lilac Road.

Snow Chief: A major stakes winner and California Horse of the Year for every year he raced, he was a Preakness stakes winner. He lived on Cool Valley Road. Kemosabi: Winner of four national championships, he stood at stud on Via Valencia where he sired 1,300 pure-bred offspring. He gained further fame as the star of a cartoon strip and comic book. His name is said to be an Indian word for "faithful friend."

Bando: Named one of the Top 10 stallions in the U.S., he was also cited as a U.S. National Champion Stallion. During his life, he bred 24 national champion stallions and was the star at a 400-acre ranch on Valley Center Road known as an Arabian horse showplace. His full name was Amurath Bandolero. Blanco: this Andalusian stallion, who lived with his owner at ranches on Hilldale Road and at Paradise Mountain, appeared in the popular "Lord of the Rings" movie series portraying Shadowfax, the horse of the Wizard.

Tissan: The first Scottsdale Championship Stallion, he was raised on Cool Valley Road by the pioneer breeders of Arabians who founded the Southern California Arabian Horse Assn.

Triplicate: a thoroughbred race horse, he was sired by a onetime American Horse of the Year and an inductee to the U.S. Hall of Fame, and gained further fame from his owner, actor-dancer Fred Astaire whose ranch and adobe home still exists on Valley Center Road. Blanco was an Andalusian stallion who appeared as Shadowfax, the lord of all horses, in the movie series "Lord of the Rings."

Sea Orbit: grandson of the legendary Seabiscuit, he was the only progeny of 108 foals to enjoy a successful racing career. Often called "baby biscuit," he lived most of his racing life on North Lake Wohlford Road and sired 35 foals. Lady's Secret: her grandfather was the racing legend Secretariat, but she was a winner in her own right, earning $5 million before she was five. She was a major stakes winner and named "Horse of the Year" while living at home on Cool Valley Road where she is buried.

Ex Secretary: granddaughter of famed Triple Crown winner Secretariat, she carried on the tradition of her famous ancestor, considered by many as the greatest thoroughbred in history. She lived on

When law enforcement in the City of San Bernardino discovered a property filled with chickens living in deplorable conditions, they called on us for help. Our dedicated Emergency Response Team sprang into action. As of today, we have transported 148 chickens to safety at our Escondido and Oceanside Campuses. In our care, they have plenty of space, nourishing food and fresh, clean water. It’s likely the first time in their lives they’ve known these small comforts. Additionally, our medical team is busy examining each one to ensure they get the care they need.

We’re determined to give each of these chickens the second chance they deserve — and with your help, we can. The event will be hosted by John and Tammy in the Morning on New Country 103.7 KSON and goes virtual on Wednesday, September 30th at 6pm PT. This is in light of the COVID19 pandemic, and to protect the Type 1 Diabetes community. This free event will also feature RaeLynn, Uncle Kracker, Tim McGraw, and more. Also, there will be a silent auction! This year's Dance for Diabetes is sponsored by Mission Federal Credit Union. Proceeds will support research designed to prevent and cure Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).

This event will raise necessary funds to support DRC’s mission to connect donors with early-career scientists enabling them to perform peer-reviewed, novel research designed to prevent and cure type 1 diabetes (T1D), minimize its complications, and improve the quality of life for those living with the disease. Currently, 1.6 million Americans live with this autoimmune disease, including 200,000 children. Approximately 40,000 new patients are diagnosed yearly. Despite these numbers, funding for diabetes research has declined. Of the funding available, 97% goes to established scientists. "This is a wonderfully unique charity event," said event chair Sherry Ahern, whose son is living with type 1 diabetes. "We are incredibly grateful for our sponsors, such as KSON, Tarson Investments, and Buchanan Brand + Design. It takes a community to connect for a cure," Ahern said.

sional athletes is unjustified and represents lack of patriotism, particularly as an example for the young people.

NBA executive and player representatives belittled the efforts of the Hong Kong people who are demonstrating against an evil Communist government asking for international support. Greed was obvious in the NBA’s decision to instead support the dictatorship. China supports NBA basketball financially more than any other country and is unbelievably profitable now and will be more so in the future plans.

The NB BA Commissioner has amazing financial benefits and the average spectator finds tickets are so costly, most fans have to watch games on TV. Baseball disrepected itself in the World Series. The winning team stole pitching signals in a primitive but effective way by using a trash can. Spors are too essential and valuable to lose the respect of their fans. They are needed but must make some corrections and improvemens for continued support of sportsmanship and not greed. I’m an old WWII Combat Infantryman and Purple Heart recipient. The Flag symbolized the reason my buddies suffered and died. In good conscience, I will not be watching Pro Basketball or Pro Football. /s/ Fran and Neal Hook, Escondido, CA.

Harper is a chicken with beautiful dark feathers. She is one of the chickens rescued from San Bernardino and is ready to be adopted! When law enforcement there discovered a property filled with chickens living in deplorable conditions, they called on San Diego Humane Society for help. Our dedicated Emergency Response Team sprang into action and transported 148 chickens to safety at our Escondido and Oceanside Campuses. In our care, they have plenty of space, nourishing food and fresh, clean water. It’s likely the first time in their lives they’ve known these small comforts. Our medical team has examined Harper, and she and many of her flock are ready for new homes. They have now confirmed that I am the 11 generation descendant of four Mayflower passengers and will be installed into the Society in October. The best part of my research is I uncovered a line of succession that was hidden for 400 years and, I am told, future historic researcher can use my work for ongoing research about the descendants of the Mayflower even though they number in the tens of millions now. My ancestors are Elder William Brewster (1566-1644) and his wife Mary Wentworth Brewster (1568-1627) and their two young sons, Love Brewster and Wrestling Brewster.

William was the spiritual leader of the first Plymouth Colony and is often seen as the Pilgrim leading the giving of thanks in portrayals of the first Thanksgiving. He did serve for awhile as a

I first met David when he was practicing law in Escondido and handled a minor legal matter for me. I was impressed and would have retained him as my personal attorney forever - but the Governor appointed him to the bench as a Municipal Court Judge, and later, was elevated to The Superior Court where he served with distinction.

He is a man of great accomplishments and he continues to serve his community. •••• Yet another really neat person and someone who seems to be doing everything right is Jeannette McBrearty, owner of the company that has brought us both The Flying Toad and Hunsaker at Vincent’s on Grand Avenue in downtown Escondido. Jeannette and her husband bought the Vincent’s Restaurant after the original owner passed away. They rechristened it Hunsaker at Vincent’s to honor their Executive Chef, Brandon Hunsaker, who had trained under Vincent. Smart move.

The Flying Toad has caught on! Big time! I’ve eaten there several times and even though the second lockdown is over and inroom dining is now offered by Hunsaker at Vincent’s . . The Flying Toad is in demand! No wonder. Both restaurants focus on high quality food and preparation along with superb service.

Like I said, Jeannette is doing something right. She clearly has taken the accurate pulse of Escondido and North County dining patrons and giving all exactly what they want! Not only are her and her staff sharp restuarateurs but they are fun people! Fun to be with, fun to talk to, and fun to learn all about food from some of the best experts in the field. I LOVE meeting all these fascinating people!

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones Business licenses and more go virtual

It just got a whole lot easier to apply for a business license or submit a business renewal with the launch of San Marcos’ new online business portal.

-

Business owners in San Marcos and companies who are doing business with the City of San Marcos can now easily apply and renew online on our business license web page.

Additional virtual solutions include: Visit the City’s COVID-19 response page for a full list of services available online, by phone or email.

Business licenses and more go virtual Business owners can now submit applications, renew and print their license within 1-2 business days after payment and any required approvals instead of waiting to receive it in the mail. Not only does the portal simplify the process, it allows for virtual vs. inperson interaction. The City has implemented a variety of no-touch environments as a result of COVID-19 and will continue to expand its offerings.

Help keep San Marcos safe and clean by downloading the San Marcos City App, where you can easily report non-emergency concerns. Whether you see graffiti, maintenance needs or a traffic light outage, you can submit your concern easily through our app.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

At the city we’ve been receiving a lot of feedback on the outdoor dining concept. Most of it has been positive, and I would say that our restaurauters have been very innovative. One of the recurring comments we’ve received is how much people like the change in Grand Ave. Now the idea of having Grand Ave turn into some sort of outdoor plaza is not new. But it seems to be gaining some momentum. As a policy, the city has followed the lead of the shop owners themselves in terms of what do they want. So, while the idea was discussed it was never pushed that strongly. That approach is starting to change. Consequently, I am going to ask that residents send in their feedback to the city and let us know what you think is best. We have found that input from the community really helps us in deciding what direction to go in. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac

Providin g For Our Seniors During COVID The City is making sure our seniors are receiving healthy meals during the pandemic. Because the in-service dining at the Senior Center had been closed during the Public Health crisis, the McClellan Senior Center is providing curbside pick-up service for lunch and dinner meals. Recently, the Center also added weekend meals.

Home bound seniors living in Vista who meet eligibility qualifications, are provided a healthy meal delivered to their home, if needed. Helping seniors and other adults at high risk from COVID-19 to stay home and stay healthy by delivering three nutritious meals a day is a top priority for us. Eating nutritious meals can help keep people in their later years active and healthy. All of us are impacted by the Coronavirus and taking care of our physical and mental health is key to staying fit during this pandemic. The County of San Diego has many helpful referrals and wellness resources on their website at SanDiegoCounty.gov.

Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss

The Oceanside City Council approved a spending plan for COVID-19-related CARES funding, which includes $100,000 for grants to Oceanside small businesses. Eligible businesses include independently owned consumer-oriented businesses engaged in retail sales and consumer/business services located in Oceanside that have been mandated to close or significantly alter their business activity due to COVID19. Grants ranging from $1,000 to $5000 will be awarded based on business type and financial impact of COVID-19. The selection process will take into consideration the year-over-year financial impact on the applicants, as well as the way they’ve had to alter their business operations to comply with State and County Public Health Orders. The City of Oceanside is partnering with MainStreet Oceanside and the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce to facilitate the program and disburse funds. Momma Kat’s and The Computer Factory

Last week we took a break from computers to question whether America is the most tolerant nation on the planet, as most of us over thirty believe, or that we are a sick, evil nation dominated by privileged white males who willfully trample the rights of gays, women and people of color, as many of our children and grandchildren believe. This week we are back to talking about computers.

This morning we had breakfast at Mama Kat’s on San Marcos Blvd. It’s only a few hundred feet from our shop. It was “Grampa Allen’s” family restaurant when we opened our

shop twenty five years ago but “Mama Kat” and her son Michael were running it. In 2005, Michael bought “Grampa Allen’s” and in 2008 renamed it “Mama Kats” in honor of his mom. This morning “Mama Kat” checked us in and showed us to our table. Michael his wife, daughters and old friends do most of the heavy lifting in the restaurant. You can’t help but be uplifted by the homey decor and the energy, attention to detail and friendliness of the staff. It’s obvious that their priorities are on us, their customers. They don’t compromise on the food quality or service either. If you don’t like “Mama Kat’s,” there is probably something wrong with you.

Habitat for Humanity=Your Gift Makes Double the Impact Wonderful news! As a part of their commitment to building stronger communities, Cox and their employees have donated $25,000 to help San Diego Habitat keep building homes during this unprecedented time, and they are challenging you to match their gift, dollar for dollar by September 30, 2020. That means your gift of $50 becomes $100, or your gift of $100 becomes $200. Building hope starts with you. It starts with caring people who want to make a positive change that will last for generations to come. Without the thousands of volunteers who come swing hammers on our build sites, we have had to rely on our small team and hired contractors to keep work going on our three active construction sites, increasing costs exponentially. With your gift today, you can help us keep building, touching the lives of families like Abdikadir and Sahra's, who are dreaming of stability and safety for their children and loved ones. Don’t forget - we only have until September 30 to meet our 2020 Cox Matching

Challenge of raising $25,000. Everyone can make a difference.

P.S. Want to make an even bigger difference? When you make a monthly donation, not only are you joining a group of passionate Habitat HopeBuilders, but you are also maximizing your impact all year round, helping families even when new challenges and obstacles arise. The Appraiser’s Corner Many people are familiar with the saying that “the difference between men and boys is the cost of their toys. That is probably a very true statement.

In fact, I am a model train collector, and I admire other peoples’ train sets when I have the opportunity to see them. Believe me, some toy trains can be very expensive, and others are more reasonable. However, how much a person spends on their model trains, and how elaborate they want it to be, will largely depend on, literally, how many bells and whistles they want their toys to have.

But even though you see toy and model trains now across the world, and of course, a company such as Lionel is universally known, it is interesting to know how the hobby started. Collectors have been interested as well.

Well, there have actually been model trains for as long as there have been railways, as some of the early locomotive models were made as promotional tools for the early trains. Of course, there were not as sophisticated as today’s model, but they served their purpose.

In Europe, in the Victorian period, there were model trains that were not only for the commoner but for the wealthy and royalty as well. Ironically, the trains were mostly made in Germany. However, the watershed event in model train history was in 1891 when Marklin developed a complete system of trains. Marklin introduced a series of standard track gauges. The new system allowed model train collectors flexibility to build sets. Markets in various countries were also established. In the United States electric trains were being devised, and from the late 1890s, they were available to the model train fan. In fact, the U.S. manufactures Ives and Lionel clashed before Lionel and American Flyer became the dominant U.S. manufactures especially from the 1920s forward. The Marx Company also had a share of the market. The popularity of model trains was high in the 1920s and 1930s. There were now modelers’ magazines, which emphasized home construction and ways to improve your train layout no matter what gauge train you had. In the United States, Lionel train sets were given as gifts. Some of these packaged sets have been passed down from one generation to another. They are worth thousands of dollars if they are in good running condition and if the original box is still in

good shape. Of course, companies such as Lionel emphasized that model train collecting was a family hobby, and that people of all ages can enjoy it.

Model railroading was popular, especially with HO scale trains, although smaller gauges often were used in areas that did not have a lot of room.

Production slowed during World War II, but surged in the 1950s, and model trains were mass produced.

However, as real trains began losing their dominant transporting role to cars and airplanes, the model trains were losing popularity as well. Model trains began to lose their appeal to children.

Model trains were mainly for the adults and collectors. They are still very much alive. The emphasis is on trains for the adult modeler, as well as on the collector, and for children.

With all the trains that have been produced there are plenty of opportunities for the collector to enjoy not only vintage trains from the past but new productions as well. For example, a Lionel Mickey Mouse circus train set from 1935 sold for nearly $10,000 at a 2014 auction. Not only were train collectors attracted to the set but Mickey Mouse collectors as well. A very rare Wilkins floor train from circa 1900 sold for $11,000, while a Hubley elevated railway, a rare American clockwork toy, sold for $18,000.

American Flyer trains from the late 1920s are always in demand. One of the sets, the President’s Special, are expensive, and, depending on condition, can cost upwards of $20,000 or more. Another American Flyer set, the Mayflower, is even more rare, but are rarely available.
