This year marks the 60th Anniversary of the historic and cutting-edge movie “Some Like It Hot,” released in 1959 starring that immortal, iconic sex goddess, Marilyn Monroe, along with seasoned actors, Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, as principle co-stars.

“stand-in,” that is, it was scripted to be The Seminole-Ritz Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida, during the 1929 Prohibition Era.

BEHIND THE SCENES DRAMA RE-SURFACES. Marilyn Monroe’s well-known delayed appearances and complete absences from the set were not all due to substance abuse and sickness, as seems to be the ‘go-to-answer’ with most who chronicle her celebrated visit here.

A relatively-recent discovery of

extraordinary Marilyn Monroe letters, personal notes, and diary recordings – for the very first time - offer the world a new, neverbefore-seen look at her inner-most thoughts, motivations, ambitions, and fears of a certain someone plotting her murder.

Even now, as these personal documents and glimpses of her hidden life are slowly being released and auctioned off, a startling new insight is emerging about her San Diego visit on the set of Some Like It Hot.

It has been revealed that Marilyn, at first, rejected the idea of playing her character, “Sugar Kane,” to be filmed at San Diego County’s coastal city of Coronado, but, was strongly-encouraged to accept the film project by then-husband, Arthur Miller. The monetary enticement of receiving 10% of the film’s total profits in addition to her normal pay was too good to turn down. Her standard pay of $300,000 (equivalent to $2.6-million today), was three times the amount co-star, Tony Curtis, would receive in the amount of $100,000

San Diego plays a most significant portion of her colorful life with the filming of Some Like It Hot in 1958, the very film which earned her immortality; the very film rated the No. 1 comedy of all-time by the world’s most distinguished movie critics

Marilyn’s constant problems on the set delayed shooting schedules and reduced film director, Billy Wilder, into a nervous wreck. When Wilder was asked if he would agree to do another film project with Marilyn Monroe, he did not pull his punches: “My doctor and my psychiatrist tell me I am too old and too rich to go through this again.”

Director, Wilder, walked-the-talk when he threw a post-production celebration party at his home for cast and crew members.

Marilyn Monroe – was not invited.

Billy Wilder didn’t plan on pyrotechnics at the celebration party but, in a manner of speaking, he got fireworks whether he wanted them or not. Wounded by Wilder’s postfilming remarks and not being invited to his cast and crew soiree was just too overwhelming for Marilyn Monroe to remain civil. She called Billy Wilder’s house and asked Mrs. Wilder to please give her husband the following message: “To go

Yet, movie director, Billy Wilder, often spoke through both sides of his mouth. While shooting was in progress, Wilder praised Marilyn to the media for being congenial and professional, while in reality, he was as nervous as a hemophiliac running naked through a razor blade factory.

Marilyn often missed her lines, necessitating as many as 40 to 70 more takes, to get just one scene right. Since Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon were in drag, such delays and retakes made them stand around in painful women’s high heels for extended periods of time.

When the agony became unbearable, both Curtis and Lemmon would have to kick off their shoes in desperation and soak their painful feet while Marilyn continued to drag (pun intended) the scenes out. Artistically, Tony Curtis felt his performances suffered through multiple takes in order to get one good scene out of the actress.

Not all was chaos and angst during the filming. There were occasionally lighter moments, though not enough to justify the pitfalls. On one amusing scenario, three-time Oscar-winning costume designer, Orry George Kelly, was busy measuring Jack Lemmon, Tony Curtis, and Marilyn Monroe for their sponge bath. "Nurse," he mumbles from behind the mask, "are my testicles black?" Embarrassed, the young nurse replies, "I don't know, Sir. I'm only here to wash your upper body and feet."

He struggles to ask again, "Nurse, please check for me. Are my testicles black?"

Concerned that he might elevate his blood pressure and heart rate from worrying about his testicles, she overcomes her embarrassment and pulls back the covers. She raises his gown, holds his manhood in one Hand and his testicles gently in the other. She looks very closely and says, "There's nothing wrong with them, Sir. They look fine." The man slowly pulls off his oxygen mask, and says very slowly, "Thank you very much. That was wonderful. Now listen to me very, very closely: "Are – my – test – results back....!"

•••• THE JEWISH QUARTERBACK

The only thing that was missing was a good quarterback. He had scouted all the colleges and even the Canadian and European Leagues, but he couldn't find a ringer who could ensure a Super Bowl win.

CROSS-DRESSING SCENES INITIALLY CONDEMNED. The film’s storyline of two men having to dress up as women after witnessing a murder by a Chicago mob was a most daring concept for its time.

When the film was first released, it was quickly banned in the state of Kansas with the explanation that, “Cross-dressing is too disturbing for Kansans.” The film found further condemnation from the Catholic organization, “The National League of Decency,” which stated that Some Like It Hot was, simply, too hot for acceptance.

It was found to be “morally objectionable” and “promoted homosexuality, lesbianism, and transvestism.”

In Memphis, Tennessee, a censorship board restricted viewing to “adults only.”

HISTORIC CHANGES FOR LEGENDARY MOVIE ROLES. In the rearview mirror, San Diego’s most famous film and cast ensemble were almost dramatically altered.

Comedian Jerry Lewis was first offered the role of Daphne, which eventually went to Jack Lemmon.

Then one night while watching CNN he saw a war-zone scene in the West Bank . In one corner of the background, he spotted a young Israeli soldier with a truly incredible arm. He threw a hand-grenade straight into a 15th story window 100 yards away.

KABOOM!

He threw another hand-grenade 75 yards away, right into a chimney.

KA-BLOOEY!

Then he threw another at a passing car going 90 mph.

BULLS-EYE!

"I've got to get this guy!" Coach said to himself. "He has the perfect arm!"

So, he brings him to the States and teaches him the great game of football.

And the Bears go on to win the Super Bowl.

The young man is hailed as the great hero of football, and when the coach asks him what he wants, all the young man wants is to call his mother.

"Mom," he says into the phone, "I just won the Super Bowl!"

"I don't want to talk to you, the old woman says."You are no longer my son!"

Lewis demurred over the concept of having to dress in women’s clothing. Then, Danny Kaye and Bob Hope were considered for the roles that would finally go to Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon, respectively.

Even Marilyn’s character of “Sugar Kane Kowalezk” was first planned for 27-year-old actress, singer, and dancer, Mitzi Gaynor. A 32-yearold Monroe would finally fill the bill as 25-year-old “Sugar.”

RELEASED DIARIES REVEAL SHOCKING SECRETS! During the film’s shooting at the Hotel Del Coronado movie set, Marilyn Monroe’s marital conflict with third and final husband, Arthur Miller, would manifest in further eccentric behavior by the actress. Miller had accompanied her to the film’s location shots, but all was not well behind closed doors. Even after Miller departed to New York, the residual ill-feelings stayed on, amplifying Marilyn’s mercurial moods during the movie shoot. The lustful-flames of romance which once burned between Monroe and Miller had now simmered to a level of cooling embers.

Marilyn’s recently-publicized archive letters reflect the initial attraction between herself and Miller that more resembled carnal lust over romance-love, the former being more an amorous sprint rather than a steady marathon. Their union seemed all dazzle with smoke

Miller, himself, would later acknowledge, “She was a whirling light to me then.”

Recently released archival letters from both Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe reveal much which remained hidden for decades. The letters pre-dated their marriage. Marilyn had a torrid romance with Arthur Miller prior to making him her third husband and converting to Judaism (Miller was of the Jewish faith).

Marilyn was aware that her ability to love often felt artificial, and not genuine. Even in her first marriage to James Dougherty in 1942 and which endured over four years, never did she feel connected and genuinely immersed in true love.

Her personal letters give a rare, but sad, insight to her psyche at the time. “My marriage didn’t make me sad, but it didn’t make me happy either,” she lamented. “My husband and I hardly spoke to each other. This wasn’t because we were angry. We had nothing to say. I was dying of boredom.”

Sadly, she seemed an island unto herself.

During her pregnancy on the set of Some Like It Hot, she manifested a larger-than-usual physique which had to be circumvented by using body-doubles in the persons of Evelyn Moriarty and Sandra Warner. Marilyn Monroe’s head was later superimposed on their respective photos which were used in promoting the movie.

Aside from his professional problems on the set with Marilyn, Tony Curtis struggled with his own challenges. Hard as he tried, Curtis could not elevate his voice high enough to speak as his feminine alter-ego, “Josephine,” and sustain it through various scenes. The resolution was reached when Curtis’ voice was dubbed and inter-mixed with voice-over artist, Paul Frees.

The end result was a hybrid mixture of both Tony Curtis and Paul Frees, together. Otherwise, it proved impossible for Curtis to sustain a woman’s high-pitched voice-range for an entire take.

Prior to their arrival in San Diego, both Curtis and Lemmon strutted about in full female drag at the Goldwyn Studios, located on the corner of Formosa Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood. Their audacious and secret plan was to see if they could ‘pass’ as women. It was a most daring experiment, but one in which they both felt committed.

Both actors brazenly, and without hesitation, performed their best cross-dressing persona, body language and all, and proceeded to walk directly into the ladies’ room at the famed Goldwyn Studios lot.

The slightest hesitation, or faltering of nerve, might give-away their ruse. So the two seasoned actors went into deep character and gave a brilliant performance to a most unsuspecting group of women.

Once inside the women’s restroom, Curtis and Lemmon proceeded to sit before the large mirror, fixing their makeup, and practicing all their feminine gestures, keeping it all subtle and natural and avoiding the exaggerated temptation of burlesque.

Their certificate of approval was earned when none of the women in their presence seemed suspicious in the slightest and carried on as usual. That’s when they knew they had arrived.

They would now wear their roles like a second skin.

The Big Top Moves into Escondido for the Weekend – The California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE) presents the Zopp Italian Family Circus: La Nonna Power, Beauty, Elegance! APPEAL. From the git-go, Marilyn knew how to package and sell her sexual image, on and off screen.

The sexy crystal-encrusted gown she wore when she sang her legendary and sultry version of “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy, in front of 15,000 guests at New York’s Madison Square Garden in May of 1962 oozed sex. The sensual-looking outfit was so tight that Monroe had to be sewn into her gown. Her buxom body and ample cleavage appeared almost nude. The fleshcolored image of her physique under the spotlight sent erotic shockwaves to the brain cells.

SHE WAS A MASTER OF SELFPROMOTION. One of the biggest myths that persist even today, is that Marilyn Monroe was, in reality, a dim-witted blonde.

Nothing was farther from the truth. The perceived dumb blonde image was by her artificial design, not her genetic bank. Monroe’s image was created and honed, complete with breathy, childlike voice and nonsensical replies, all carefully crafted to present an illusion of innocence and sexual vulnerability.

In the film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, one of Marilyn’s lines captured her real-life strategy: “I can be smart when it’s important, but most men don’t like it.”

The Paper • Page 4 • September 19, 2019 Waldron Announces Bill to Hold SANDAG Accountable to Voters

Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron (Escondido) announced her bill, AB 1398, to require transparency from the San Diego Association of Governments (SANDAG) when spending taxpayer funds. The bill will require SANDAG to hold a series of public meetings and earn the approval of two-thirds of voters before making substantial changes to its spending plan.

“Unfortunately, SANDAG cannot be trusted to look out for people in all parts of our diverse county,” said Waldron. “Our community deserves confidence that their tax money is being used appropriately and that SANDAG is keeping its promises to voters. No agency should be able to operate in the dark.”

In 2004, SANDAG passed a halfcent sales tax extension for highway and transit projects across the county. SANDAG has known for years that there would not be enough funding to pay for the projects that were supposed to be funded by that tax extension.

Because of the funding shortfall, some SANDAG leaders have proposed canceling promised road projects and redirecting that money to transit, forcing many North County taxpayers to fund projects that will not benefit them. AB 1398 will ensure that any attempt to

redistribute road and transit funding is transparent and has broad support.

Carlsbad Fatal Collision

On Sept. 15, 2019 at 5:58 p.m., Officers from the Carlsbad Police Department responded to the intersection of Aviara Parkway and Cobblestone Road regarding a report of a vehicle that had collided with a street light pole. Upon arrival, Officers found a 2002 Honda Civic crashed into the pole with extensive damage. The passenger in the vehicle was pronounced deceased on scene and the driver was transported by the Fire Department to a local area hospital with serious injuries.

The passenger pronounced deceased was identified as a 41year-old female from San Marcos.

The driver transported for his injuries, was identified as a 37year-old male from San Marcos.

Alcohol intoxication is believed to be a factor in the cause of the collision and the investigation by the Traffic Division is underway.

Salary and Term Limits - Items Discussed at last night’s Oceanside City Council Meetin

Last week’s cover story by Pete Peterson that looked into the behind the scenes action of Roy Rogers and Gene Autry brought back lots of memories.

When I managed Dick Clark’s radio station KGUD in Santa Barbara my secretary was Peggy Rogers. Peggy had been Gene Autry’s secretary for many years and from time to time he’d call and chat with Peggy.

I never met Gene Autry but I’m sure Peggy could have arranged it.

I was just too busy it seemed. She would tell me all about Autry. She loved the man.

Autry was, however, no saint. He was a major alcoholic and equally major philanderer. It is said he slept with every leading lady in his

I recall one story where Autry had to be helped up on his horse, Champion, at a rodeo at Madison Square Garden in New York. Once astride his horse he rode around the arena waving to one and all. When he got back behind the scenes he had to be helped off this horse, he was that smashed. All his businesses deteriorated. Eventually, he became persona non grata everywhere and retired from entertainment.

Yet, Gene tells us in his 1978 autobiography that he took control of his drinking. He did not say that he stopped necessarily, but he took control of it, which is how he conducted his life. His stellar successes in the 37 years of his second career tell us that he must have succeeded.

No one could sustain that degree of success for so long as a practicing severe alcoholic. Facts are facts, as we know, and the facts include that

He had earlier that council members should be recognized for their full time service rather than the common misconception that it was a part time job. Rodriguez said in June, “It would open the door for individuals who are working, making a medium income in our city (so that they) would be able to pay their bills and represent their city at the same time.”

The freshman council member’s original request, backed by Mayor Peter Weiss, as stated in the June 5 council agenda was to discuss “the salaries paid by California cities to full-time council members and the process to increase the salaries paid to Oceanside council members.”

He also asked for information about term limits for council members and how to place a measure on the ballot in November 2020 “to raise council salaries and impose term limits.”

Last night’s meeting came after The Paper had gone to press so we will report the action(s) the Oceanside City Council took in next week’s issue.

Gene Autry had a demon and a dark side. The demon was alcohol. The dark side was philandering.

A married man since 1932, Autry didn’t let that stand in the way of his pursuing attractive actresses — and others — here, there and yonder. A young singer who traveled with him in the late ’50s related many years later of Autry’s telling him that “The Cowboy” slept with nearly all his leading ladies because, “Hell, son, I figured I owed it to them!” His ongoing affair with Gail Davis, who was leading lady in many of his later movies, and of his halfhour TV shows, nearly caused his wife, Ina, to divorce him before he finally brought it to an end.

There was another side to Autry, however. In Ken Maynard’s last years, when the former cowboy star was broke and destitute, rumors have held for years that a friend sent him a check regularly to help finance his meager life. But the money that friend sent Maynard, didn’t come from the friend’s account. According to the rumors,

Gene Autry sent a personal check to that friend each time. The friend would then write his own check for the same amount, made out to Maynard. Autry felt that Maynard, having given Gene his start in movies, was someone who he should help personally. Improving Mental Health Treatment

As the legislature adjourns for the year, I’m happy to report that two significant bills impacting mental health treatments in California are heading to the Governor’s desk.

This session I introduced Assembly Bill 1352, legislation that strengthens the voice of local mental health boards to help meet the needs of the mentally ill. The BronzanMcCorquodale Act requires county mental health systems to provide services to those with serious emotional disturbance or mental illness.

The Act also created local mental health boards, responsible for reviewing community needs and services. The boards act in an advisory capacity, and were intended to connect family members, patients and the community to county Boards of Supervisors and local mental/behavioral health directors, all for the purpose of improving community mental health systems.

Unfortunately, over the years their role has been marginalized. My bill will bring a broader perspective to local mental health boards, along with increased community impact and greater transparency.

I have also joined Senator Jim Beall (D – San Jose) as the Principal Coauthor for Senate Bill 10. Unlike the Department of Veterans Affairs and 48 other states, California lacks

a peer support specialist certification program. Studies show mental health or substance abuse treatment programs that include peer support specialists lead to fewer hospitalizations, improve client well-being, alleviate depression and many other symptoms. They also create core competencies allowing certified peers to transfer skills from county to county, while allowing providers to access federal matching funds.

I’m happy to report both of these bills were approved by the Assembly and Senate without opposition and have been forwarded to Governor Newsom.

With treatment, the mentally ill can turn their lives around. Improving our local mental health systems and expanding treatment options will lead to better outcomes for patients, their families, and for California taxpayers.

We Must Never Forget

Everyone remembers where they were on September 11th, 2001.

Despite it being 18 years ago, most know the exact time and place we first saw the Twin Towers on fire.

My 9/11 story occurred in an unusual place, thousands of miles away from the tragedy that swept our nation.

Some of you may know this, but for 35 years, I’ve been a pilot for Delta Airlines. I’ve spent thousands of hours in the cockpit, going all around the world and on September 9th, 2001 I was at helm flying from Los Angeles to Honolulu. On the morning of September 11th, I woke to a call from the captain who told me to turn on the TV. It was unusual for the captain to call, especially just a few hours before I was supposed to fly back to Los Angeles. I sat, numb, and stared, like all Americans, not yet comprehending the impact this would have on all our lives.

Honolulu, Hawaii is about 5,000 miles away from where the Twin Towers fell, but we all felt the

impact. All airplanes flying domestically were told they needed to land at the nearest airport.

Honolulu, being one of the only major airports in the Pacific became a hub for airline crews from all over the world. Our hotel became a gathering place for all airline crews, as many wondered about the well-being of their friends and colleagues back on the mainland. Despite the tragedy and heartbreak going on all across the world, our hotel had a strong sense of comaraderie, each airline trying to help each other out. We were briefed daily and received updates as air traffic had been halted.

On September 16th we received the go ahead and I returned aboard our Delta plane, ready to take folks back to Los Angeles. As I sat in the cockpit, I couldn’t help but have an eerie feeling of the horrific events that had taken place just five days prior.

My heart still goes out to all the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives to save others, including the heroes on United Flight 93. We must never forget.

It is now more than 65 years after the Second World War in Europe ended.

Now, more than ever, with Iran, among others, claiming the Holocaust to be 'a myth,' it is imperative to make sure the world never forgets.

This message is intended to reach 400 million people. Be a link in the memorial chain and help distribute this around the world.

Wanted to correct the record about the Los Angeles Angels.

I enjoyed reading Pete Peterson’s article on Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. These are the cowboys, along with Hopalong Cassidy that many of us grew up with.

As a lifelong baseball fan who grew up in Los Angeles, I have to correct a couple items in the section about Gene Autry’s ownership of the Los Angeles Angels.

Pete is correct that the team name honored the Pacific Coast League Los Angeles Angels who were, for many years, a farm club of the Chicago Cubs. Their home field was Wrigley Field in south Los Angeles. While not a replica of Chicago’s Wrigley Field, it did have the ivy covered outfield wall.

When the Dodgers decided to move to Los Angeles, the Dodgers and Cubs exchanged farm clubs and the PCL Los Angeles Angels moved to Spokane, Washington as the Dodgers farm team.

When the American League Los Angeles Angels began play in 1961, a refurbished Wrigley Field was their home. Walter O’Malley, the owner of the Dodgers, had control of the Los Angeles area for Major League Baseball and insisted that the new American League team play in Dodger Stadium which opened for the 1962 season.

The Angels played at “Chavez Ravine,” as it was known when the Angels were the home team, for four seasons before moving to Anaheim.

The entrance of the American League into the Los Angeles market was a tumultuous time because of the power of Walter O’ Malley in all of baseball in those days.

But Gene Autry got back in one way. The Dodgers played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, owned by the City of Los Angeles.

As such, there were no beer sales permitted. Wrigley Field was not government owned and Gene could sell all the beer he wanted.

On July 4, 1962, the traditional mid point of the baseball season, the Dodgers and Angels were in first place in the National and American leagues. No divisions, no playoffs.

Finish first and you were in the World Series. High hopes in July fell away by fall and only the Dodgers made the World Series

More and more the security service monikers of the United Kingdom’s MI-5 and MI-6 are mentioned in our news reports, and, especially in spy terrorist-genre movies, but what do they mean?

MI-5 (Military Intelligence, Section 5), is the United Kingdom's domestic counter-intelligence and security agency and is part of that nation’s intelligence machinery alongside their Secret Intelligence Service (MI6). The service is directed to protect British parliamentary democracy and economic interests, counter terrorism and espionage within the Great Britain. MI-5 operates similarly as the FBI does in the U.S.

The Secret Intelligence Service (SIS), commonly known as MI-6 (Military Intelligence, Section 6), is the “foreign intelligence” agency of the British government … a counterpart to our CIA. Think “James Bond.” Author and Bond creator Ian Fleming was a member of Britain’s MI-6 during World War II. Ironically, the existence of MI-6 was not officially acknowledged until 1994. It forms a part of the UK's intelligence machinery alongside MI-5 and Defense Intelligence.

During the Second World War the human intelligence work of MI-6 was overshadowed by several other efforts: the cryptanalytic effort undertaken by the Government Code and Cypher School, the bureau responsible for interception and decryption of foreign communications at Bletchley Park where the “Enigma” German infamous machine’s code was broken; the extensive "double-cross" system run

by MI-5 to feed misleading domestic intelligence to German spies and imagery intelligence activities conducted by the RAF Photographic Reconnaissance Unit.

An interesting point of history: leading up to World War II, MI-6 assisted Germany’s Nazi Gestapo secret police, via "the exchange of information about Communism" as late as October 1937 -- well into the Nazi era.

In 1940, the second member of the “Cambridge Spy Ring,” journalist and Soviet agent Kim Philby applied for a vacancy in Section D of SIS, and was vetted by his friend and fellow Soviet agent Guy Burgess. When Section D was absorbed by Special Operations Executive (SOE) in summer of 1940, Philby was appointed as an instructor in the arts of "black propaganda." Philby was virtually a fox guarding the henhouse, so to speak.

In early 1944, MI-6 re-established Section IX, and Philby took a position there where he was able to alert the NKVD, the Russian secret service, about all British intelligence on

Konstantin Volkov tried to defect to the UK, offering the names of all Soviet agents working inside British intelligence services. Philby received the memo on Volkov's offer, and alerted the Soviets so they could arrest him. As a result, the Russian agent never made it to England.

MI-6 operations against the USSR were extensively compromised by the fact the post-war CounterEspionage Section was headed for two years by Philby. Although Philby's continued damage was mitigated for several years by his transfer as Head of Station in Turkey, he later was assigned as the MI-6 intelligence liaison officer at the British Embassy in Washington D.C. In that capacity he caused great havoc by compromising a program of joint U.S.-UK paramilitary operations.

As MI-6 investigators closed in on him, Philby escaped to Moscow in 1953, following Donald Maclean and Guy Burgess, his friends and fellow members of the infamous "Cambridge Spy Ring.”

During the Global War on Terror, MI6 has exchanged information with the CIA. In the run-up to the invasion of Iraq in 2003, it is alleged, although not confirmed, that MI-6 conducted Operation Mass Appeal which was a campaign to plant stories about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction (WMD) in the media. Evidently it worked.

The reason for the U.S. attack on Iraq was fear of WMDs. In November 2011, MI-6 helped capture Libyan leader Col. Saif al-Islam Gaddafi. The top-secret mission, dubbed Operation X to disguise its purpose, used modern electronic intelligence (ELINT) technologies to bug the Libyan leader along with his friends and family.

Today, both MI-5 and MI-6 work closely with the FBI and CIA and are heavily involved in tracking down and capturing al Qaede, ISIS-influenced jihadists and Muslim terrorists who have attacked and killed dozens of Brits and Americans through acts of domestic terror both in the UK and U.S.

Even though there often is a “lovehate” relationship between the American and British intelligence services, with today’s lightning fast electronic-satellite gathering information systems available to virtually every country around the globe, the “Atlantic Cousins” work hand-inhand in tracking down and holding at bay enemies of our respective democratic institutions.

Well, after another beer, and some more heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with an answer to that question Getting kicked in the testicles is more painful than having a baby, and even though I obviously couldn't really know, here is the reason for my conclusion:

A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, "It might be nice to have another child."

But you have never heard a guy say, "You know, I think I would like another kick in the testicles."

I rest my case.

•••• In 1986, Peter Davies was on holiday in Kenya after graduating from Louisiana State University .

On a hike through the bush, he came across a young bull elephant standing with one leg raised in the air. The elephant seemed distressed, so Peter approached it very carefully. He got down on one knee, inspected the elephants foot, and found a large piece of wood deeply embedded in it. As carefully and as gently as he could, Peter worked the wood out with his knife, after which the elephant gingerly put down its foot.

The elephant turned to face the man and with a rather curious look on its face, stared at him for several tense moments. Peter stood frozen, thinking of nothing else but being trampled. Eventually the elephant trumpeted loudly, turned and walked away. Peter never forgot that elephant or the events of that day.

Twenty years later, Peter was walking through the Chicago Zoo with his teenaged son. As they approached the elephant enclosure, one of the creatures turned and walked over to near where Peter and his son Cameron were standing.

The large bull elephant stared at Peter, lifted its front foot off the ground, then put it down. The elephant did that several times then trumpeted loudly, all the while staring at the man.

Remembering the encounter in 1986, Peter could not help wondering if this was the same elephant.

Peter summoned up his courage, climbed over the railing and made his way into the enclosure. He walked right up to the elephant and

stared back in wonder. The elephant trumpeted again, wrapped its trunk around one of Peter legs and slammed him against the railing, killing him instantly.

Probably wasn't the same elephant.

CAREFULLY-PLANNED SEXUAL EXPLOITS & ‘ACCIDENTS.’ Like Jean Harlow, Mae West, and Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe would create and learn her own tricks.

She knew how to dress, how to talk, and how to draw attention to her buxom attributes, even courting scandal in the pursuit of sexual publicity. For example, she carefully prepared ‘unexpected accidents,’ especially during press conferences. It was no misfortune when her shoulder straps suddenly snapped, momentarily exposing her ample cleavage in full-view of the international press corps. It was great ‘copy’ for the newspapers.

And television news stations had their ‘tease story’ for the day.

And she never missed a golden opportunity. She exploited her sexsymbol image at every turn. Once, when acting as Grand Marshal at the Miss America Pageant parade, while wearing a revealing dress, she leaned over to whisper to gossip columnist, Earl Wilson, that she normally does not wear any underwear.

She had it down to a science.

She even rehearsed her walk so that those viewing her from behind would experience heart palpitations. According to academic, Sarah Churchwell, author of “The Many Lives of Marilyn Monroe,” Marilyn’s walk in the movie Niagara, was “One of the most overtly sexual scenes.” The 30-second-long walk of Marilyn which was shot from behind with her hips swaying, had such a powerful visual impact that it was shamelessly – but successfully -- used in the film’s marketing. The lofty New York Times chimed in: “She can be seductive – even when she walks!”

Even film scholar, Richard Dyer, noted her distinctive hip-swinging walk, earning her the sobriquet, “The girl with the horizontal walk.”

However, nothing can improve on the imagery conjured up by Jack Lemmon’s character, Daphne, in Some Like It Hot: “Look at that, Joe! Look how she moves. That’s just like Jell-0 on springs!”

The Marilyn Monroe-Paula Strasberg ordeal exasperated director, Wilder, especially if he liked the scene but was over-ruled by Strasberg, who sat Buddha-like as the immovable and irrevocable judge.

As co-star, Tony Curtis, remembers, “She (Marilyn Monroe) would do a shot, then she wouldn’t look at Billy Wilder the director, she’d immediately look in the direction of Paula Strasberg, her acting coach.”

Billy Wilder had his fill and would obliquely make his presence known, through an act of outright sarcasm, and serve notice that the Monroe-Strasberg game was up.

As Curtis further explains, “And Billy Wilder caught on as Paula would nod her head in approval.

So, right in the middle of a scene, once he (Wilder) said “cut,” he’d immediately say ‘How was that for you, Paula?’”

The overall experience left director, Billy Wilder, a total mental wreck. “We were in mid-flight, and there was a nut on the plane,” he would say with intense exasperation, referring to Marilyn.

The San Diego movie connection with Marilyn Monroe would prove a war zone of sorts. Marilyn’s husband, Arthur Miller, blamed Some Like It Hot director, Billy Wilder, for Marilyn’s second miscarriage.

Wilder shot back a telegram, “Had you dear Arthur been not her husband but her writer and director, and been subjected to all the indignities I was, you would have thrown her out on her can, thermos bottle and all, to avoid a nervous breakdown. I did the braver thing. I had a nervous breakdown!”

In turn, Marilyn, ultimately, blamed husband, Miller, for her miscarriage.

San Marcos Residents Lead Ronald McDonald House Gala - After relying on San Diego’s Ronald McDonald House during a life-changing medical crisis, San Marcos residents Josh and Michelle Rathweg are now giving back by serving on the executive committee for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego’s 10th annual ROMP Gala on October 12th.

McDonald House provides “a home away from home” to families who have a critically ill or injured child in a nearby local hospital and keeps them close to one another during a medical crisis.

The Rathwegs were first introduced to the Ronald McDonald House when their 10month-old daughter Brynn was diagnosed with a life-threatening cancerous brain tumor. They had recently moved to San Diego from Texas and did not have any family nearby. They frequently used day services – showers, meals, laundry, a place for reflection and tears – during Brynn’s treatment. Today, Brynn is a healthy eight-year-old who is a competitive cheerleader with her 10-year-old sister Avery.

Brynn has received a diagnosis of No Evidence of Disease since her treatment ended. Through their experience, the Rathwegs are strong advocates for the House and are some of its most inspirational speakers. Through their role with ROMP, they hope to raise funds and awareness of the impact that services can have on families with a child in the hospital. "In a moment of great need for our family, Ronald McDonald House not only gave us a place to rest our head, but it also gave us a place to rest our heart," said Josh Rathweg.

The ROMP Gala will bring together supporters and philanthropists for a funfilled, upscale night that will foster the magic of togetherness and hope for families with critically ill children. This year’s gala, named “ROMP Enchanted: The Magic of Hope,” will sparkle like a magical garden at The Fairmont Grand Del Mar and be filled with delights of delectable dining, dancing and entertaining surprises.

What’s Happening at Honor Flight San Diego? – Due to some very generous donors and organizations, plus some successful fundraising campaigns and events, we are on for our fall Tour of Honor to Washington, D.C.! We currently have over 100 WWII and Korea War veterans on our waiting list and while we couldn't raise enough money to take 80 veterans this time, we are taking 60. We depart on Friday, October 4 and return on Sunday, October 6.

Part of that fundraising was a partnership with Normandy Jump 2019 where we screened the documentary, Libertas over two days in Coronado. Recently I was at a conference and heard a speaker who spoke on “generations.” It was interesting to contemplate the differences in terms of “the silent generation,” “baby boomers,” “GenX,” “Millennial,” etc. It sparked my interest and I’ve begun a significant study of the distinctions and some implications for our culture and society.

Beginning on September 22nd, I am going to be giving a series of talk on “Generations” and it should have application to lots of folks, such as: • Millennials who are trying to fit into the workplace these days.

• The Silent Generation who are a bit frustrated with today’s youth.

• Anyone who is raising a

Psalm 78 (in the Hebrew Scriptures) encourages us to take the things we have heard and known about (that our parents have told us) and tell them to the next generation. (Psalm 78:1-4 GW Translation).

I’ve been talking about the three things that concern me the most – Housing, Traffic, & Budget. Let’s continue last week’s discussion on housing.

Every 8 years the state sends to the region (which in our case is SD county) a number of homes that should be built. We are now in a new cycle and the number of homes to be built is 171k. Last cycle it was 161k and the county did not make its numbers. This is often referred to as the “REENA” number which is from the acronym RHNA Regional Housing Needs Assessment. Not making the number is as you might imagine not good. There is a threat that cities who don’t make their number would be fined and or lose control of where housing could be built. That has not happened but it has been discussed. Finally, each city is given a share of that number and it is further divided by categories like low income, very low income, medium and high. The idea is to meet the needs across a socio-economic income spectrum.

There are local, national, and international filmmakers who tell the stories you will want to share. Plus there will be panel discussions after the screenings with the actors, producers and directors. This year the festival opens and closes with two incredible Vietnam-era films, Take Me Home Huey and Scramble the Seawolves.

Of interest to our WWII veterans and their families is a documentary called, Sunken Roads: Three Generations after D-Day that shows on Saturday, September 28th. The film is a finalist for the “Best Documentary Feature” award. We will be there with an outreach table to answer questions about Honor Flight and of course to accept applications from WWII and Korea War veterans for a future flight. “Mail Call” – If you have been on our Honor Flight, you remember Mail Call and how much the veterans love getting the letters from their family, friends and the community. We are looking for scout troops, children’s classes, church groups and organizations to send letters for our veterans on the upcoming flight. Since we will have both WWII and Korea era veterans, please address your cards, letters and notes to “Dear Veteran”. Packages need to arrive

by September 27th so the mail can be sorted into 60 bags for the veterans. Honor Flight San Diego Homecoming will be Sunday, October 6th. One of the best parts of our trip is the homecoming that friends, family and the community give to our veterans. The entire family can enjoy a wide variety of events and attractions during the annual Oceanside Harbor Days.

This multi-attraction event is presented by Genentech and Tri-City Medical Center. It is organized by the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce.

Harbor Days is Oceanside’s longest running event, and features over 200 arts and craft exhibits, a new and improved tasty food court, costumed pirates and mermaids, and a beer garden sponsored by the Prohibition Brewing Company. Harbor Days is free to the public with complimentary transportation provided by the Chamber, with their unique double-decker buses picking up Harbor Days attendees from shuttles stops in the Harbor and also provides a pick-up/drop-off location at the downtown Oceanside Transit Center at Seagaze and Cleveland Streets.

In the notebook, Miller expressed great fear that he would decline as a writer because of his association with Marilyn’s pitiful and widelypublicized decadent life of drugs, overdoses, and hospital stays. He regretted ever having married her.

Further destruction was found in Miller’s words that, “The only one I will ever love is my daughter,” all of which a crushed Marilyn secretly shared with her closest friends.

She would soon divorce third and final husband, Arthur Miller, on January 24, 1961, after a turbulent marriage which lasted less than 4 ½ years, barely edging out the longevity of her first marriage to James Dougherty, which lasted four years and 3 months. (Her second marriage to famed baseball player, Joe DiMaggio, was a swift 9 months in its duration.)

COMMITTED TO MENTAL ASYLUM. Weeks after her

divorce from Arthur Miller, Marilyn would be committed to a mental hospital in February of 1961. Her personal letters offer a nightmarish sight-and-sound experience within the Payne Whitley Psychiatric Clinic where she spent a hellish four days locked in a padded cell. The terrifying and degrading experience was captured on six handwritten pages which remained hidden amongst a collection of 200 of her most personal diary entries.

Her fall from world’s most adored sex symbol to debased mental patient was anguish beyond words.

Her forced baths at the psychiatric clinic were sexually degrading in the presence of both men and women. She was made to take baths against her will. When she refused, “Two hefty men and two hefty women” picked her up by all fours and physically took her by elevator to the hospital’s seventh floor. Marilyn remembered in her personal journal, “I must say that at least they had the decency to carry me face down. I just wept quietly all the way there.”

Fry’s brought a lot of foot traffic to the neighborhood and Comp USA and Staples are gone. They really didn’t compete with our core business of building, selling, repairing and upgrading PCs. Their house PCs (Great Quality) were junk and their service dept a joke, but for DIY (do it yourself), they were a solid gold Mecca. The variety of gizmos, gadgets, components and tools for PC hobbyist was unmatched and their prices were reasonable.

Bye Bye Fry’s

We, like other PC stores used to sell components to DIY customers. These folks typically returned or exchanged 50% of the components they purchased. DYI guys were a royal pain.

When Fry’s opened we were able to stop selling components over the counter. We sent DYI customers to Fry’s and sold components only to customers that wanted us to install, test and verify hardware.

When Fry’s Electronics came to San Marcos fifteen years ago I attended their VIP grand opening breakfast bash and pep rally. There I met board chairman John Fry who confided in me that our “mom and pop” operation would thrive in Fry’s shadow, but Comp USA, Staples and Best Buy

The Lost Archives of Marilyn Monroe continue to be sold. During Julien’s Auction on December 6, 2014, public fascination continued with high-dollar purchases. The recent Beverly Hills auction of Marilyn Monroe’s lost love letters to Joe DiMaggio fetched $78, 125.

MARILYN FEARED SOMEONE WAS PLANNING TO MURDER HER BY POISON. Marilyn’s personal handwritten entries into her personal diary reveal how she suspected foul play in the planning of her own death and even how her murder would be made to look like self-induced poisoning, or suicide.

Marilyn’s history of eccentric behavior and drug abuse afforded her little credibility and sober consideration in her suspecting her own murder by poison.

SUICIDE NOT ACCEPTED BY GENERAL PUBLIC. Marilyn’s unexpected death in her Brentwood, Los Angeles home on August 5, 1962, would be ruled “death by poison” and said to be self-induced.

Coroner, Theodore Curphey, officially ruled it a “probable suicide.”

Probable did not rule out murder.

The official findings stated she may have poisoned herself by purposely

to convert Fry’s stores into “fulfillment Centers” for Amazon. Whatever happens in the end, we will miss them.

Marilyn Monroe’s death greatly differed from the usual pattern of suicides. Prior to her death, she was brightly optimistic and she had rediscovered peace and harmony within herself. Her friends spoke of this and how she was planning new, exciting movie projects. She was looking forward to her future. Her newly-discovered letters also confirm this. Her personal notes attest that she finally found happiness, and her rediscovery of self-reliance and confidence in solving her own inner problems. She was planning to remarry Joe DiMaggio and even

Her 5’ 5” nude body was found dead, face-down on her bed. Her hand was still grasping the telephone. Her last intention of calling someone was never completed.

It was said that the suicide rate in Los Angeles doubled after she died.

Newspaper circulations expanded during news of her shocking death at age 36.

Less than forty-four months after departing the world-famed Hotel Del Coronado, Marilyn Monroe would be no more. Yet, her legacy, broken childhood, tormented marriages, and brief stardom shot across our horizon like a brightlyburning comet.

Shakespeare’s words eerily fit Marilyn Monroe’s life: “I have touched the highest point of my greatness; And from the full meridian of my glory, I haste now to my setting: I shall fall like a bright
