Volume 47 - No. 37

Most everyone we know loves cute little puppies, cute little kittens, cute little monkeys, cute little squirrels . . . animals are warm and cuddly and fuzzy and loyal and . . . . well, they're just nice. That innate feeling often arouses a sense of loyalty within us when we hear of an organization with such a high minded name as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, more commonly referred to as PETA. Why sure, we think . . . we'll support an organization with such a noble calling. After all, we like animals.
But, let's take a look at PETA. Is it as high-minded as they would have us believe? We'll look at what critics allege is, at best, outlandish and outrageous tactics . . . and then we'll look at what PETA purports to be. What they have accomplished (which is a great deal), what their goals are . . . what they hope to accomplish - how, and working with whom. A few things you should know about PETA:

PETA is not an animal welfare organization.
PETA spends less than one percent of its multi-million dollar budget actually helping animals. The group euthanized (killed) more than 1,900 animals in one year alone -- that's over 85 percent of the animals it received. PETA's Dirty Secret
Hypocrisy is the mother of all credibility problems, and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has it in spades. While loudly complaining about the "unethical" treatment of animals by restaurant owners, grocers, farmers, scientists, anglers, and countless other Americans, the group has its own dirty little secret. PETA kills animals. By the thousands.
From July 1998 through the end of 2005, PETA killed over 14,400 dogs, cats, and other "companion animals" -at its Norfolk, Virginia, headquarters. That's more than five defenseless animals every day. Not counting the dogs and cats PETA spayed and neutered, the group put to death over 90 percent
Obituaries Memorials Area Services Page 12
of the animals it took in during 2005 alone. And its angel-of-death pattern shows no sign of changing. PETA kills an average of 85 percent of the animals it takes in, and finds adoptive homes for just 14 percent. By contrast, the Norfolk SPCA, whose shelter is located less than four miles from PETA's headquarters, found adoptive homes for 73 percent of its animals in 2003. Dana Cheek, the former (and most recent) director of the Norfolk SPCA, and whose facility is only four miles away from PETA’s location, wrote recently:
“I often receive phone calls from frantic people who have surrendered their pets to PETA with the understanding that PETA will "find them a good home." Many of them are led to believe that the animals will be taken to a nearby shelter. Little do they know that the pets are killed in the PETA van before they even pull away from the pet owner's home … PETA refuses to surrender animals they obtain to area shelters for rehoming. If only the celebrity "deep-pocket" donors on the west coast knew that their donations were going to kill adoptable cats and dogs here in Norfolk.”
PETA has given tens of thousands of dollars to convicted arsonists and other violent criminals. This includes a 2001 donation of $1,500 to the North American Earth Liberation Front (ELF), an FBI-certified “domestic terrorist” group responsible for dozens of firebombs and death threats. During the 1990s, PETA paid $70,200 to an Animal Liberation Front (ALF) activist convicted of burning down a Michigan State University research laboratory. In his sentencing recommendation, a federal prosecutor implicated PETA president Ingrid Newkirk in that crime. And PETA vegetarian campaign coordinator Bruce Friedrich told an animal rights convention in 2001 that “blowing stuff up and smashing windows” is “a great way to bring about animal liberation.”
"We did it, we did it. We gave $1,500 to the ELF for a specific program," PETA's Lisa Lange admitted on the Fox News Channel. PETA has offered no fewer than eight different explanations of what the "specific program" was, but law enforcement leaders have noted that since the Earth Liberation Front is a criminal enterprise, it has absolutely no legal "programs" of any kind.

In 2003, ELF set fire to an unfinished, 200 unit condominium complex near San Diego. The arson caused $50 million in damage, and according to a San Diego Fire Captain: "It could have killed someone."
ELF left its calling card in the form of a twelve foot sign that read: "If you build it -- we will burn it -- the ELF's are mad."
The Animal Liberation Front (ALF), a violent, underground group of fanatics who plant firebombs in restaurants, destroy butcher shops, and torch research labs is considered by the FBI to be among America's most active and prolific terrorist groups, but PETA compares it to the Underground Railroad and the French Resistance. More than 20 years after its inception, PETA continues to hire convicted ALF militants and funds their legal defense. PETA has given $2,000 to David Wilson, then a national ALF "spokesperson." The group paid $27,000 for the legal defense of Roger Troen, who was arrested for taking part in a burglary and arson at the University of Oregon. It gave $7,500 to Fran Stephanie Trutt, who tried to murder the president of a medical laboratory. It gave $5,000 to Josh Harper, who attacked Native Americans on a whale hunt by throwing smoke bombs, shooting flares, and spraying their faces with chemical fire extinguishers. All of these monies were paid out of taxexempt funds, the same pot of money constantly enlarged by donations from an unsuspecting general public. Most ominously, PETA president Ingrid

Newkirk was involved in the multimillion-dollar arson at Michigan State University that resulted in a 57-month prison term for Animal Liberation Front bomber Rodney Coronado. At Coronado's sentencing hearing, U.S. Attorney Michael Dettmer said that PETA's Ingrid Newkirk arranged ahead of time to have Coronado send her a pair of FedEx packages from Michigan -- one on the day before he burned the lab down, and the other shortly afterward.
The first FedEx, according to the Sentencing Memorandum, was delivered to a woman named Maria Blanton, "a longtime PETA member who had agreed to accept the first Federal Express package from Coronado after being asked to do so by Ingrid Newkirk." The FBI intercepted the second package, which had been sent to the same address.
A search warrant executed at Blanton's home turned up evidence that PETA's other co-founder, Alex Pacheco, had also been planning burglaries and break-ins along with Rodney Coronado. The feds seized "surveillance logs; code names for Coronado, Pacheco, and others; burglary tools; two-way radios; night vision goggles; [and] phony identification for Coronado and Pacheco."
Shortly after Coronado's arrest, PETA gave $45,200 to his "support committee" and "loaned" $25,000 to his father (the loan was never repaid and PETA hasn't complained). Now free from jail, with an expired parole, and with the benefit of an expired Statute of Limitations on his many earlier arsons (to which he readily confesses in his standard stump speech), Coronado stood before a crowd of hundreds of son at a time.

A few days later, ALF criminals tried to burn down a McDonald's restaurant in Chico, California, using a firebomb that matched Coronado's recipe. The following month, Ingrid Newkirk told ABC News that Rodney Coronado is "a fine young man."
PETA has published a pamphlet, "Activism and the Law," in which PETA openly offers advice on "burning a laboratory building."
Perhaps Newkirk's most telling comment, though, came in a 2002 U.S. News & World Report feature. "Our nonviolent tactics are not as effective," she admitted. "We ask nicely for years and get nothing. Someone makes a threat, and it works."
Some of the strongest criticism of PETA comes as a result of their questionable marketing effort to kids. PETA's website for kids puts a skull and crossbones next to the logo of Disney's Animal Kingdom. It hands out trading cards to kids that allege drinking milk will make them fat, pimply, flatulent, and phlegm-ridden. PETA also sends "humane education lecturer" Gary Yourofsky into high schools - and even middle schools -- to promote the "animal liberation" agenda. Yourofsky is a convicted ALF felon who has said he would support burning down medical research labs even if humans were trapped in the flames. In his speeches to adolescents, Gary Yourofsky regularly compares himself to Gandhi and Jesus Christ. PETA has repeatedly attacked groups like the March of Dimes, the Pediatric

One Christmas Eve, at around 2 AM, a farmer heard a loud crash right outside his house. When he got to the window he looked out to see Santa, his sleigh and all the reindeer crashed into his outdoor toilet. "If we really believe that animals have the same right to be free from pain and suffering at our hands, then, of course we're going to be, as a movement, blowing things up and smashing windows … I think it's a great way to bring about animal liberation … I think it would be great if all of the fast-food outlets, slaughterhouses, these laboratories, and the banks that fund them exploded tomorrow. I think it's perfectly appropriate for people to take bricks and toss them through the windows ... Hallelujah to the people who are willing to do it." - Bruce Friedrich, PETA's vegan campaign coordinator, at the "Animal Rights 2001" conference "Even if animal tests produced a cure for AIDS, we'd be against it." - PETA president and co-founder Ingrid Newkirk, in the September 1989 issue of Vogue
"It may have been ELF, but then, I sometimes get them confused with ALF, the Animal Liberation Front. And then there's Earth First! and PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals). "McVeigh's decision to go vegetarian groups him with some of the world's greatest visionaries." - Bruce Friedrich praising Oklahoma City bomber and mass-murderer Timothy McVeigh, for choosing a vegetarian last meal.
When PETA learned that the photographs of Holocaust victims displayed in its roving exhibit -- entitled "The Holocaust on Your Plate" -- included Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel as a young man at the Buchenwald concentration camp, it shrugged. "Six million people died in concentration camps," laments Ingrid Newkirk, "but six billion broiler chickens will die this year in slaughterhouses."
When a grisly killing spree in Vancouver left 15 women dead, PETA tried to purchase full-page ads in local papers suggesting that this carnage was no worse than the killing of animals for food.
Disturbing a number of people is the acknowledged liaison between PETA and the Animal Liberation Front. This organization consists of small autonomous groups of people all over the world who carry out direct action according to the ALF guidelines. Any group of people who are vegetarians or vegans and who carry out actions according to ALF guidelines have the right to regard themselves as part of the ALF.
In a memorandum to supporters and potential supporters, the organization said:

“If you are a member of an active A.L.F. cell, send us any clippings, or your own report, with date, time, place, and a few details about the action. Send your reports on plain paper, using block capital letters, or a public typewriter that many people have access to. Wear gloves at all times so your fingerprints are not on the paper, envelope, or stamp. Do not give your address, and don't lick the stamp or envelope; wet it with a sponge. Remember you should expect that all of our mail and any other support groups' mail is opened and read by the authorities.” Critics argue this is not the type of philosophy any responsible agency dealing with human or animal rights would support. PETA seeks "total animal liberation," according to its president and cofounder, Ingrid Newkirk. That means no meat or dairy but it also means no aquariums, no circuses, no hunting or fishing, no fur or leather, and no medical research using animals. PETA is even opposed to the use of seeing-eye dogs.
The group, which raises more than $25 million a year from 1.6 million supporters, opposes any human use of animals, whether for food, fashion or research. In the more than two decades since its founding, it has become a major threat to medical researchers, meatpackers, fur sellers and others.
Back in 2004 PETA collected almost $29 million in donations, but few donors understood exactly where their money wasgoing. During the past ten years, PETA has spent four times as much on members of its staff and support crews who have criminal back-

Within the past several years PETA announced its plan to distribute "Buckets of Blood" to children outside middle schools, high schools, and KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) restaurants. According to the Associated Press, these grotesque toys are filled with "fake blood and bones, a bloodied plastic chicken and a cardboard caricature of a blood-spattered Colonel Sanders holding a butcher knife toward a terrified-looking chicken." PETA continues to lie in wait outside schools, distributing misleading antidairy trading cards to children as they walk home. The cards depict children suffering debilitating illnesses and embarrassing conditions, supposedly as a result of drinking milk. PETA's campaign is "based on sensationalism" and "a real tragedy," according to registered dietitian Deanna Rose. "It targets teenagers who really are calcium deficient and need to drink their milk." Locally, former President and CEO of the Escondido Humane Society, Phil Morgan, said, “while I appreciate the concern they have for our planet and the animals that live on it, it is our view that we are a bit more of a moderate organization. We’re here to take care of animals; we’re thankful for people bringing animals to us. Others may be more judgmental than we are . . . but the general purpose is all the same. To provide for the animals.” Then Executive Director, Sally Costello, did not return our calls for comment. Who, or What, is PETA?
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is an international nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, VA.
Founded in 1980, PETA operates under the simple principle that animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, or use for entertainment. PETA educates policymakers and the public about animal abuse and promotes an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. There is no question but what PETA is a powerful organization. Many, however, question their tactics as well as their "all or nothing" approach. They seem to have no trouble attracting funding, nor celebrity endorsements. Their financial statements as of 7/31/06 show Income of $31,394,691, expenses of $27,706,304.00 and a net worth of $ 15,899,813.
Opponents of PETA (and there are many) point to the high levels of income and acknowledge that PETA is "by far the most successful radical organization in America." The key word, they say, is radical. But where does all that money go?
PETA receives rock-bottom ratings from charity watchdogs. Charity Navigator, the nation's largest nonpartisan evaluator of non-profit organizations, gives PETA a rating of one-star ("poor"). It says PETA "fails to meet industry standards and performs well below most charities in its cause." PETA's "Foundation to

pany that managed nearly 100 public libraries around the country.
The city has approved a designcontract for the project . . . but that’s just the first step. Oncew that’s completed and approved then it has to pass muster with the master plan which gueds the property’s long-term development.
If the Escondido City Council approves staff ’s plan to outsource the public library there may be litigation.
Back in 1887 a four-story,854oom mineral springs health resort emerged . . .with people traveling from around the country to Carlsbad for its therapeutic waters. But, the hotel burned down in 1896.
Oceanside’s 43 acre airport along state Route 76 in the San Luis Rey Valley has only one runway which accommodates mostly single engine aircraft.
The trustees voted unanimously last month to not outsource the library; the city council overrode the trustee’s decision and referred the item to staff to develop a proposed contract for study, negotiations, and, possibly, approval.
It looks as though the Oceanside Airport may finally be making some headway toward improvingits runway and taxi-ways.
The FAA laid out the design plan and city officials say they’ll work with the FAA to get construction funding.
No changes have been made to the runway since 2000. Airport users are excited about the prospect of upgrades but it will probably take about six months to complete the design work. Probable cost is between $1.5 and $1.8 million. FAA grants will cover most of the air-side construction but not capital

Man About Town
Mornin' God. It's me again.
Well, you've outdone yourself again.
It's a cool morning. Air is fresh and sweet and the Night Blooming Jasmine is sharing its sweet aroma with us, thanks to You.
Lots of great things gonna happen today. Don't know what they are yet but am looking forward to them just the same. At least one of the great things that will happen today is I'll have our two puppies look deep into my soul with those beautiful brown eyes that see all, tell all, and display total dedication and love, every time they look at me. When you created dogs you sure got it just perfect! Wish some of my fellow human beings were as lovable as dogs. Sometime, when you're not too busy, maybe you could work on that. You've got more important things to do
There are only a few differences between people and dogs, chief of which is, people go to the bathroom when and where it is appropriate. Dogs don't always do that. Aside from that, dogs are generally better than people.
Consider the fact that if/when you have a slight tummy upset and lie down to rest, your pup will likely jump up in the bed beside you. Does she lie down with you?
No, she most certainly does not. She wants to play. She nips at your ear, she chews on your hair, she runs around the bed and then comes back and snuggles up against you . . . then starts all over again.
When she wants to play you'll get no rest and there's no way you can get mad at her, or stay mad at her. People aren't like that. Sometimes they don't wanna play. Sometimes they don't have time left to play. They're too busy with other things. Sometimes I think humans have forgotten how to play. And I can stay angry with humans, and they with me. Not so with dogs. They won't let you stay mad. In fact, they can look at you
Carlsbad’s Mineral Water History factors into proposed new Hotel
Now comes a proposed miniversion in the form of the Beach Village project, which has been presented to the Carlsbad City Council.
Plans call for a single, fourstory building with 17 hotel rooms, nine residential condominiums, a 1,200 sq. ft. spa and 300 feet of retail space. The developer says all rooms will have three forms of water choices . . . the standard Colorado (tap) water . . . the good alkaline water that patrons come to buy, and highly mineralized water for people to bathe in. Council approved 4-1.

People don't forgive . . . or, if they do, they take their own sweet time about it. People ought to be more like dogs.
Except I can do without the chewing of ears and biting my hair, thank you very much. ••••• Talking with some pals today about tattoos. I accidentally used the word "where" instead of "were," and I also, inadvertently, used "descent" instead of "decent." Technically, the spelling is all correct, however, I just applied the wrong words. This was not intentional, but simply human error on my part. As with all professions, writers are not infallible and sometimes we falter. I find it amusing

ME: “You’re lying. You and I never talked six months ago. Why would I want to do business with someone who lies to me?”
In all of the above type scenarios my standard reply is . . . “please take me off your calling list, as is required by law, and never call here again.” ••••• I’ve never been a member of Toastmasters but I have a number of good friends who have. I’ve been yakking in public most of my life with no difficulty communicating . . . but I know it’s tough for some people. Long time pal and brilliant dentist, Dr. Herb Lowe, with offices in San Marcos, is a former toastmaster. Evelyn Madison, my partner in The Paper is also a former member. Why bring this up now?
Well, it happens that a recently formed club has relocated to Brookdale Senior Living Center @1590 West San Marcos Boulevard, San Marcos, CA 92078. The Two Faces of PETA Cont. from Page 3
Support Animal Protection" -- now doing business as "The PETA Foundation" -- was one of just 23 organizations nationwide to receive zero stars ("exceptionally poor"). PETA, they say, spends less than one percent of its $27 million dollar annual budget actually helping animals. Critics also allege PETA prefers to spend its money on publicity stunts and legal defense fees for alleged criminals, rather than finding the animals suitable homes. The publicity stunts are, however, brilliantly conceived, produced and efficiently distributed to the media getting maximum attention. Witness the "Run Pamploma Naked" campaign, witness the professional models who have posed nude in the "I'd Rather Be Naked than Wear Furs" campaign, witness the support of Pamela Anderson and others in a variety of well produced advertising/marketing campaigns.
PETA's leadership has compared animal farmers to serial killer (and cannibal) Jeffrey Dahmer. They proclaimed in a 2003 exhibit that chickens are as valuable as Jewish Holocaust victims. They announced with a 2001 billboard that a shark attack on a little boy was "revenge" against humans who had it coming anyway. All of these allegations by critics, all of the acknowledged tie-ins with questionable organizations, have gotten plenty of notoriety for PETA. But are they effective? You bet.
No matter how outrageous their tactics, PETA has accomplished a great deal in the area of animal rights. They have been responsible for the closure of the largest horse slaughterhouse in the United States, the closure of a military laboratory in which animals were shot, and stopping the use of cats and dogs in all wound laboratories. Us magazine reports, "PETA has had an enormous effect on the way corporations treat animals."
PETA uncovered the abuse of animals in experiments in 1981, launching the precedent-setting Silver Spring monkeys case. This resulted in the first arrest and conviction of an animal experimenter in the United States on charges of cruelty to animals, the first confiscation of abused laboratory animals, and the first U.S. Supreme Court victory for animals in laboratories. PETA released 70 hours of videotape documenting the appalling treatment of primates at the University of Pennsylvania head injury laboratory, resulting in government fines and the end of primate use there.
PETA's undercover investigation of a huge contract testing laboratory in Philadelphia and their subsequent campaign led to Benetton's permanent ban on animal tests-a first for a major cosmetics company. Other leading companies, such as Avon, Revlon, and Estée Lauder, followed suit. L'Oréal, the world's largest cosmetics manufacturer, yielded after PETA's four-year international campaign. Gillette announced a moratorium on animal tests after PETA's 10-year campaign. PETA now lists more than 550 cosmetics companies that do not test products on animals.
PETA distributed an undercover video showing Las Vegas entertainer Bobby Berosini beating orangutans with a metal rod. The U.S. Department of the Interior revoked Berosini's captivebred wildlife permit, making it illegal for Berosini to buy or sell orangutans. PETA's undercover investigation of Boys Town National Research Hospital's experiments in which kittens' heads were cut into and cats were starved in order to study deafness spurred the National Institutes of Health to issue a report condemning Boys Town's animal care and use program. The USDA found that Boys Town failed to comply with the Animal Welfare Act.
Investigative work, congressional involvement, consumer boycotts, and international media coverage frequently result in improvements in the quality of life for, and saves the lives of, thousands of animals. According to The Washington Post, because of PETA, "labs have closed ... many designers have stopped using fur ... rules, laws have changed." PETA also has held several "Rock Against Fur" and "Fur Is a Drag" benefit concerts featuring The B-52's, k.d. lang, and others. Longtime supporter Paul McCartney invited PETA to set up literature tables on his world tour.
Supermodels Christy Turlington, Tyra Banks, and Marcus Schenkenberg, actor Kim Basinger, and others have posed for the "I'd Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur" Campaign. PETA also persuaded top modeling agency Boss Models to announce that its models will no longer wear fur and received pledges from filmmakers including Oliver Stone, Martin Scorsese, and Rob Reiner to keep fur off movie sets.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle "Protests by groups such as PETA have hobbled the fur business."
One of the biggest areas of publicity that PETA generated was over their battle to save the harp seals. Photos and videos of harp seal pups being beaten to death by fur hunters enraged animal lovers and has severely impacted the fur trade. Clearly, PETA has done a great deal of good for animal rights. The question appears to be, why not rely on normal organizational strength rather than take such radical approaches that alienate people who might otherwise be supporters? Why implement outrageous, outlandish demonstrations and events that can only repel potential supporters? Why align yourself with organizations such as ELF and ALF? Organizations that the FBI has identified as terrorist and criminal organizations?
Critics merely shake their heads in wonder . . . but still acknowledge that PETA is a powerful force to reckon with. If you wish to contact PETA to express your views or to ask questions of them, you may reach them at: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals 501 Front Street, Norfolk, VA 23510 Phone 757-622-7382 | Fax 757-6220457 | Email info@peta-online.org Note: This cover story is a reprint from the orignal, first published August 2, 2007. The Legislature Has Adjourned
As the 2017 legislative session closes, I am pleased that most of my bill package received overwhelming support, and three of my bills have already been signed into law by Governor Brown. Six of my bills are on the Governor’s desk, including AB 1386, a Legislative Woman’s Caucus priority bill to raise awareness for newly diagnosed breast/ovarian cancer patients about speaking with a genetic counselor to help focus treatment options. AB 532, authorizes courts to offer wraparound mental health, addiction treatment services, counseling, transitional housing, childcare etc. to women with initial misdemeanor violations to prevent the cycle of recidivism. Most women in our jails have children and have repeated incarcerations. AB 1031 creates the Native California Wildlife Rehabilitation Fund to help injured, orphaned or sick wildlife through a grant funded by a voluntary tax return checkoff. AB 658 temporarily suspends the license fee clinical laboratories pay to eliminate an accumulated $12 million surplus, and AB 1361, joint authored with Assemblymember Eduardo Garcia (D – Coachella), allows water districts

that Ernest Hemingway made so many mistakes that his editor complained about the unusually high number of his errors and Hemingway snapped back, "Well, that's what you're hired to correct!" I also chuckle to myself that F. Scott Fitzgerald's original draft of The Great Gatsby had literally (hundreds) of spelling and grammatical errors. And it tickles my funny bone that the great Jane Austen, author of Pride and Prejudice, was fortunate to have editors, as was Agatha Christie who confessed, "Writing and spelling were always terribly difficult for me. I am a notoriously bad speller and have remained so until this day." I am certainly not comparing myself to any of the aforementioned literary giants (there are countless other examples), but then again, I would be delighted if I were added to their ranks as a fallible scribbler of stories (LOL). Also, I apologize for any oversight in my arithmetic regarding the total number of submarine missiles -- the basic facts are correct, I just added it up wrong, but most readers I spoke with understood the simple oversight. I genuinely wish to thank you, Chuck and Janice Johnson, for caring enough to email us on the misspellings, etc. I truly value your input and keen eye in pointing out mistakes. It's unfortunate that such errors occur daily in our various newspapers across our great land.
to service Indian tribal lands, sponsored by the Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians in my district, and ACR 118 recognizing Women’s' Suffrage all await the Governor’s signature.
The first bill I introduced this session, and the first signed into law, AB 4, requires that a voter be notified via email or text when a voter's registration is altered online. The Governor has also signed AB 369, sponsored by the Bar Association to clarify rights of appeal in child custody cases. HR 8 for Women's Heart Health also passed.
The Legislature has adjourned, and I’m looking forward to continuing to work on issues relevant to our district. It is an honor to continue to serve you in Sacramento.
Assemblymember Marie Waldron, REscondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.
Though they are unintentional errors, we writers do hold ourselves accountable and regret making these human errors, nonetheless.
I promise to try to do better in the future. We love receiving Letters to the Editor and are very pleased you are among our readership. God bless you both. And I salute you, sir, for your military service to our great country. Warmest Regards, Friedrich Gomez Kudos to the Computer Factory
My Dear Readers of The Paper:
The last time I told you about my visit to the Computer Factory I had nothing but high praises for their work and how reasonable were their prices.
Well, I had to return to their establishment. A few days ago I received a message on my home phone message machine "To notify you your windows license has been expired. All services on your Microsoft Windows will be stopped ?? mumbling?? call 800-699-7042" When I heard this message, I remembered the articles in The Paper from The Computer Factory regarding scams. So instead of calling the 800 number as instructed by the message, I called 760-744-4315, the Computer Factory. Paul

answered and listened carefully to my story. Then he told me to bring it in and let them turn it on and take a look at it.
Wednesday night I arrived at The Computer Factory after closing, only to find Paul and Nome just leaving. They were ending a long day and were on their way home, but they helped me anyway. Any other repair would say, "sorry, see you tomorrow." They helped me bring the computer in. (They even turned the lights back on.) We filled out a work order and Paul said they'd check it out and call me.
Paul called as he said and told me the computer was running well. There were no viruses. No charges either. I read the message to him again and he said that I had done the right thing. Ignore it.
Thanks to Paul and Nome at The Computer Factory I didn't get taken this time.
It is nice to have friends like The Computer Factory, that know computers so that when I get in trouble, I can call on them.
My only suggestion to improve the Computer Factory: In your ad in The Paper, please make the phone number, 760-744-4315 LARGER.
It is too small to read with these trifocals.

Missile Crisis Anecdote
Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow
Dear Mr Gomez:
Another fine article from you about the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now how about an anecdote as to how a civilian handled it.
I was serving aboard a destroyer out of Key West at that time and my mother lived in Deland, a small town east of Orlando. I guess she figured that Disneyland might be a major target and was afraid of the fallout from the bomb. So she had a fallout shelter built, complete with air filtration, two beds and two weeks of food supplies. It is about a 100 square feet of floor space and has 4 feet of the walls above ground.
Now, 55 years later, during a visit to the area, I went to the house and could see that the shelter is still there. The current residents had no idea about it's purpose. They are using it as a general storage space. As of this writing I'm wondering if they used it during hurricane Irma. I don't know how many others were built ( I was told many ) but it is definitely a piece of recent history. /s/ Charles J. Buckley San Diego County, CA.
From Depression to War
The second World War was the largest and most deadly global military conflict in recorded history. It was the defining seven-year period of the 20th century – certainly the most important event in U.S. history since it founding.
While there are many reasons declared as the causes of World War II, these aspects stand out: nationalistic control of vast geographic regions, and the natural resources those nations possess – namely oil. Japan, Germany, and Italy all needed the natural resources of others to maintain their imperialistic goals. In Europe, the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I in 1914, with an Allied Powers victory, was perceived by Germany as unjust. Essentially, it stripped that nation of much of its natural resources and burdened it with nearly unsustainable cash payments of its former enemies. This resentment fueled the success of the militarist Nazi Party. It’s leader, Adolf Hitler, and the Nazis succeeded beyond their wildest expectations primarily due to the economic conditions created by the world-wide Great Depression of the 1930s. The power the Nazis gained allowed them to re-arm Germany, launching Hitler on his blood-thirsty rampage.
Historically, the War began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, drawing in the Polish allies of the United Kingdom and France. History should never forget that as early as 1937, the Japanese were invading China, killing thousand. What began as a territorial conflict in Eastern Europe spread quickly to Western Europe and beyond. In the Pacific, Japan captured dozens of islands and then attacked the U.S. installations in the Philippine Islands, Alaska, and Hawaii. Germany soon was joined by Italy and Japan, with other minor allies such as Austria, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. This confederation was known as the “Axis Powers.”
In 1940, Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader in Germany, had signed a “non-aggression” treaty with the Soviet Union. When German invaded Poland from the west, Russia invaded from the east. But, Hitler
double-crossed Josef Stalin, leader of the Soviet Union. Germany invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, breaking the “non-aggression” pact. In December 1941, Japan attacked the U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor, along with various U.S. bases in the Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island. The Japanese also landed a force on Attu, in Alaska’s Aleutian islands – an event more or less overlooked in the history books.
As the War dragged on, Italian forces collapsed, surrendered, then joined the Allies in 1943. On May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered, then Japan gave up on Aug. 14, 1945. The War officially ended on Sept. 2, 1945, with the formal surrender of the Empire of Japan on the deck of the battleship USS Missouri. Approximately 62 million people died in the war. Most of the casualties were civilians as a result of the large-scale Allied aerial bombing of cities, disease, starvation, and Hitler’s Holocaust genocide. It is estimated the Soviet Union, alone, suffered more than 25 million deaths; China lost some 10 million of its citizens. For the Allied nations of the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, and the United States, some 17 million military and 35 million civilians were killed. For the Axis Powers, 8 million military and 4 million civilians were killed.
The United States had 16 million in uniform services. Thousands more worked in wartime factories producing planes, guns, tanks, bombs and ammunition. We lost more than 600,000 of our military personnel.
The strength of the United States was forged by the challenges we faced as a nation during World War II. If it hadn’t have been for those war years of the late thirties through the fifties, the U.S. wouldn’t be the world power we are today. Our technological and social advancements were put in high gear from the snail’s pace of isolationists to world leaders. While younger generations study only that history required in school, few can grasp the enormity of a world at war. May they never experience such a thing … but they should know and understand what happened. Show this column to a young person and see if it helps them understand why, with all the wars we’ve had since the fifties, we put a capital “W” on World War II. I am often asked what I plan to do about various issues. As an elected official, I try my best to respond to constituent concerns and to be thorough in my review of city business matters discussed at Council meetings. There are some key projects I have supported including the Escondido Creek restoration, maintaining local control of our Library’s Teen Area or can be reserved using the Library’s online catalog at library.escondido.org. Students at Escondido High School, San Pasqual High School, and Orange Glen High School can also check out copies at their school library. After discussing The Walled City, teens can share other books they have enjoyed and select the next Burritos & Book Club title. Complimentary burritos will be provided, and all participants receive a free book or audiobook at the end of the program.
This program is generously sponsored by the Friends of the Escondido Public Library and Taco Bell located at 1944 E. Valley Parkway in Escondido. Back to School Boredom. "Back to School" may be music to a parent's ears, but it can mean a tough adjustment for our pets who have become used to long summer days of constant entertainment while the kids are home. When pets get bored they can exhibit destructive, anti-social or anxious behaviors. Here are a few tips from our Community Training Coordinator Shauna Romero, CPDT-KA, on creating a stimulating environment. Though toys can’t replace human contact and socialization, there are many things you can do to help keep your pets happy while the kids go back to school:
Encouraging your dog to work and think for their treats is a fun activity for both you and your pet!

Enrichment Items for Dogs
Stuffed Toys: Fill toys with high-value treats, small amounts of cheese, dog food, etc. These can be made up ahead of time and put in the freezer until you’re ready to use them. Hiding Food/Treats/Toys: You can hide treats and toys around the pet’s environment for them to find. Positive-Reinforcement Training:
What do you think our City does well? What do you think our City needs to improve? What is our City missing? If you were in charge, what one thing would you hope to accomplish? Please send me an email at odiaz@escondido.org Be prepared to help implement your good idea with me.
Enrichment Items for Cats
Window Perches: Allow your cat access to a perch in front of a window so they can watch the outside world. Bags/Decorated Boxes: Cats are curious creatures and love exploring paper bags and boxes. You can make boxes more interesting by attaching, pipe cleaners, cat toys, etc. Just be sure to cut off handles on bags to ensure your cats don’t get caught. Streamers/Ribbons: Attach or hang strips to fans/vents. They can provide loads of entertainment for our feline friends. (Supervise cats when playing with streamers or ribbons to ensure they do not choke, swallow or get tangled in them.) Hiding/Quiet Napping Areas: Cats also enjoy quiet time and need a place to hide and recharge. Cat trees and places for them to hide and relax are essential to a cat’s wellbeing.
The Pastor Says . . .
Pastor Sam Brumit Mission 316, San Marcos How do I make friends?
Question: I have difficulty making friends. How do I go about developing friendships when it doesn’t come naturally?
Recently, someone asked me this question. I am often asked this and so here are a few simple answers: • To make friends, you have to BE friendly. You don’t have to be an extrovert to do this, but it does mean showing interest in the other person. • Recognize the level of the friendship. An acquaintance is different than an intimate friend. Ask questions that are appropriate for the nature of the relationship. • Spend time. Trust develops as you get to know someone. Common interests help. • Choose people that tend to
build you up, not tear you down. You need some people in your life who can mentor you in areas you wish to grow in. • Realize it’s not the number of friends you have but the quality of the friendships. The Bible says there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. • Develop the qualities of a good friend… such as, availability, encouragement, going the extra mile, developing your listening skills, being truthful, and loyal. A friend of mine said something recently that answers a lot of questions about how to develop friendships. Jessica said "One of the greatest gifts we can offer others is to say their name. To ask their story and listen intently when they speak. To look them in the eyes, and not scan the room to see who else or what else might be more important. Status, titles and accolades do not matter. People do. Let's show them by our presence". Above all, friends are always loyal. (Proverbs 17:17, NLT)

The lawyer said, "Well, I met with your wife today, and she informed me that she invested $5,000 in two pictures that she thinks will bring a minimum of $15-20 million. I think she could be right."

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter
Investing in Vista’s Roads
The City of Vista needs to maintain existing city streets on a regular basis, in order to keep the roads in safe working order and to save on significant future costs. Well-maintained infrastructure leads to safer travel and smoother rides for motorists travelling our roads. Currently, the City of Vista is in the middle of a street improvement project that includes overlaying asphalt on the roads, and when necessary, replacing or repairing old curbs and ramps, gutters, and sidewalks. Construction on some of the roads will include digging out and
replacing the existing asphalt before overlaying new asphalt, which means it will take a little longer for the crews to complete. All of the road work should be completed by the end of the year. The City and its contractors will strive to minimize noise and traffic impacts sometimes associated with construction. A complete list of road improvements is available on the City website at CityofVista.com under “Construction Projects”. If you are interested in learning more about Vista’s traffic or road improvement projects, please contact the Engineering Department at 760.639.6111.

Do not under any circumstances respond to any warning that your computer is infected either on your screen or by telephone. These are always criminals. We know of no exceptions. When it happens, call us for advice.
Late last year we published a two part series dealing with “Malware,” the number one cause of computer repairs. We are repeating those two columns because they are as relevant today as they were last winter. Part one deals with defensive software part two deals with defensive strategies. Both are also in the blog section of our new w e b s i t e (www.thecomputerfactory.net) We are continually adding articles of interest from past issues, including the adven-

You should also activate your Window’s or anti-virus program’s firewall. 2. Keeping Your System Security Current. With Win 10 updates are no longer optional, they are mandatory. With Win 7/8 updates are optional and you may either enable the automatic update feature or run them selectively. In the past we have recommended enabling “automatic updates.” We no longer make this recommendation because Microsoft updates for Win 7/8 are often more trouble than they are worth. Many of these disruptive updates offer little or no constructive benefits to the user. They are merely tools to gain better access to your browsing patterns and personal data for Microsoft’s marketing efforts.. 3. Secure Your Network & Keep Your Personal Information Safe. Many PCs access files, printers, or the Internet via your home or business Wi-Fi “hot spot.” Make sure your passwords are strong. Never broadcast an open Wi-Fi connection. Your files are safe and accessible, the cost is less than $60 a year and it is automatic. If you do use an external back-up, back it up frequently and disconnect it when you’re done. Don’t leave your back-up device connected.
