This is a difficult story to write. Won’t be easy to read, either.
At fifteen seconds after 9:41 a.m., on September 11, 2001, a photographer named Richard Drew took a picture of a man falling through the sky -falling through time as well as through space. This was the infamous day the World Trade Center was attacked by terrorists. The day that over 200 human beings jumped to their deaths.
The first fireman killed was from being hit by a falling jumper who had recently left the 95th floor.
As quoted by Tom Junod, in a story from Esquire Magazine: “He is in the clutches of pure physics, accelerating at a rate of thirty-two feet per second squared. He will soon be traveling at upwards of 150 miles per hour, and he is upside down.” Of Richard Drew, the Associated Press photographer, Junod wrote:
“He started shooting pictures through a 200mm lens. He was standing between a cop and an emergency technician, and each time one of them cried, "There goes another," his camera found a falling body and followed it down for a nine- or twelve-shot sequence. He shot ten or fifteen of them before he heard the rumbling of the South Tower and witnessed, through the winnowing exclusivity of his lens, its collapse.”
Junod goes on: “They began jumping not long after the first plane hit the North Tower, not long after the fire started. They kept jumping until the tower fell. They jumped through windows already broken and then, later, through windows they broke themselves. They jumped to escape the smoke and the fire; they jumped when the ceilings fell and the floors collapsed; they jumped just to breathe once more before they died. They jumped continually, from all four sides of the building, and from all floors above and around the building's fatal wound. down, and their way down lasted an approximate count of ten seconds. They were all, obviously, not just killed when they landed but destroyed, in body though not, one prays, in soul.

Millions of women were raped during WWII, particularly after Germany was occupied.
The majority of the assaults were committed in the Soviet occupation zone; estimates of the numbers of German women raped by Soviet soldiers ranged up to 2 million. In many cases women were the victims of repeated rapes, some as many as 60 to 70 times. At least 100,000 women are believed to have been raped in Berlin, based on surging abortion rates in the following months and contemporary hospital reports, with an estimated 10,000 women dying in the aftermath. Female deaths in connection with the rapes in Germany, overall, are estimated at 240,000. No one has clean hands during wartime. It’s an ugly business, war is. For military and civilians, but particularly for civilians who have no defenses against military might.
But somewhere along the line, there has become a different type of war. Whereas it used to be military machines sought to conceal their atrocities, modern day terrorist organizations boast about them. They provide stills and video coverage of beheadings and distribute it freely to the mainstream media so as to further intimidate the general public and the military forces and their sponsoring nations.

Nearly a millennium before, the Muslim conqueror Yusuf ibn Tashfin and his troops cut off the heads of the 24,000 Castilians they had killed in the Battle of Sagrajas in 1086, and then they piled up the rest of the bodies “to make a sort of minaret for the muezzins who, standing on the piles of headless cadavers, sang the praises of Allah,” wrote historian Paul Fregosi. Tashfin then sent packages of heads to every major city in North Africa and Spain. But the practice of beheading goes further back, to the Prophet Muhammad himself, who reportedly ordered the execution of 700 Jewish men in Medina on charges of conspiring against him. ISIS has launched another cyberwar campaign as they have uploaded a beheading of an American Journalist.
There is, to all of this, a political element, of course. In every age and in every part of the world, heads of traitors and criminals have been impaled on stakes as warnings, and heads of enemies and oppressors hoisted aloft as prizes. Foley’s death was apparently a response to American air strikes on Islamic State posi-
tions, and the jihadists then took another American’s death to retaliate for the U.S. not refraining from further military action. In this political maneuvering, the killers have a counterpart: Mexican drugcartel members, who are also notorious for beheading opponents. In 2006, La Familia announced its presence by rolling the severed heads of five rivals onto the floor of a discotheque in Michoacán. Since then, beheadings have become a regular occurrence south of the border.
That this ideology seeks to annihilate and tyrannize is clear from the jihadists’ beheading method: not a quick, clean blow, but a slow, agonizing sawing motion that keeps the victim alive to experience his own execution. This is not the guillotine: It is torture. And its perpetrators glory in it. Welcome to the Islamic State.

How to deal with this not really new but openly displayed form of warfare?
Western sensibilities are such that “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth” would not fly. At least not publicly. Not politically correct. Yet one must wonder if Western leadership must not come to realize that just as we had to be brutal and merciless in our relentless fight against wartime Japan and Germany, so we must do the same against terrorists such as ISIS.
We just want the bad guys to be repaid by the good guys. Which is us.
It is said the wheels of justice move slowly. And they do. But they move a little less slowly when our Special Forces get involved. So, in the end, war hasn’t really changed all that much. The Good Guys (Us) still kill The Bad Guys (Them). It is still ugly, regardless of who does the killing, and how, and when.

War criminals from ISIS must be tracked down, captured, and made to pay the ultimate penalty . . . and without mercy. More often than not, this type of activity will be done by our Special Forces teams . . . SEALS, Green Berets, Delta Force, CIA operatives . . . all doing their work under the cloak of secrecy.
And most of us don’t really want to know what happens.

Drug Sweep Hits Escondido and San Marcos: 18 Arrested
patrols in areas known as hot spots for drug-related crime.
Formed in 2009, the task force has a mission of reducing drugrelated crime and provide treatment options for those addicts who want to ‘get clean.’
Methamphetamine use among people arrested in San Diego County is an increasing problem, with deaths related to use of the drug at a record high in the county. Law enforcement officials target the young adults as that is the highest area of activity.
The multi-agency Methamphetamine Strike Force swooped down on eighteen people in both Escondido and San Marcos Thursday and arrested them on drug charges.
This was the 16th time the task force has conducted operations.
More than 50 law enforcement officers and drug-treatment professionals took part, including sheriff’s deputies, Escondido police, county probation officers and North County Transit District officers, according to sheriff's Sgt. Emory Wallace. The Sheriff's Department was the lead agency for the operation. Drug counselors were available at the operation’s command post. Four probationers arrested were transported to local treatment programs. The sweep included compliance checks for offenders on probation or parole, warrant searches and saturation
Children were also rescued by both deputies and social workers. When residences were deemed too risky for children because of neglect and/or drug abuse, they were transferred to Child Protective Services.

Carlsbad police report a robber in his late teens or early 20s held up a Chase Bank branch in Carlsbad Saturday, using a demand note that said he had a weapon. A teller at the bank on Avenida Encinas, south of Poinsettia Lane, handed over some cash and the robber left shortly after 3 p.m., Carlsbad police said. No one saw a weapon on the

We live in a strange world, strange enough where my article last week was published in the same issue of "The Paper" as the thoughtful--and correct-letter from Mr. Jerome Delacroix. I would like Mr. Delacroix to know that I am in full agreement with him--suicides are caused by many problems and heartaches, and it was never my intention to give the impression that all were due to Bipolar Disorder. I have nothing but the highest respect for him and all other men and women in our military. They are the reason I can sleep at night without a shotgun by my bed, and I thank them for that.

I can understand Mr. Delacroix becoming disgusted with the press in their handling of Robin Williams' death. I read many of the same articles and saw the same TV news reports, but we reacted differently to them. He simply got fed up and became disgusted. I was angered and hurt. As I tried to point out in my article, the press had no excuse (in my opinion) in giving out every little detail about Williams' suicide, which they did at great length. Good lord, what about the man's wife and children? What about his other family members and dear personal friends? Where was any consideration given to their thoughts and privacy in their darkest hour? My article certainly didn't reveal anything new. That had already been hashed over ad infinitum by the mainstream press. And I am still angry over their mistreatment of his family. I focused on bipolar suicides because I have experience with them. as many as 75 student quarterbacks, anxious to learn the finely tuned techniques of running a team. He will soon fly to Bozeman, Montana, where he will be training a promising young freshman quarterback. He travels to Utah, Arizona and within California. He will soon be coaching Ricky Town who has committed to USC from St. Bonaventure. At age 43 he has 14 football seasons behind him and plenty of acquired knowledge to pass along to promising as well as proven athletes.

Today, he runs his own Quarterback training school known as 5 Tool QB. He teaches all players from Pop Warner to the Pros. Among his students he includes Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Garrett Gilbert from SMU, a 6th round draft choice for the Rams. He provides private lessons as well as group sessions. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written direct-ly for neurosurgeons.

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.
The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

A Down Syndrome child, Mike was homeschooled by Dick and Kathy and, among other things, you see right away that he was showered with love and affection and he learned that lesson well . . . to treat others like they were the greatest people in the world. He knows a lot of the customers by name . . . and they know him.
I make it a point to try and get by on Wednesdays (I really like the Slider Specials at only $1.25 each on Wednesdays.) Whenever I walk in the door he calls me by name, comes over and shakes my hand. He makes me feel like royalty. But, then,

Groundwater, a Vital Part of our Water Supply
Water deliveries throughout California have been seriously impacted by the long drought. The resulting shortfall has forced many agricultural regions to draw excessive amounts of water from groundwater basins, which in dry years can provide up to 46 percent of the state’s total water supply.
In response, the Legislature hastily passed three bills in the closing weeks of the 2014 session governing water management policies for groundwater basins. Senate Bills 1168, 1319 and Assembly Bill 1739 have all been forwarded to Governor Brown for his signature. The need to update the state’s groundwater regulations is readily apparent. Indeed, many groundwater basins have been critically overdrawn for decades, long before the current drought. However, this legislation infringes on private property rights and punishes groundwater users in basins that have had little or no overdraft or

already enforce effective management policies. Furthermore, these bills were rushed through with little time for public review. It took nearly ten years to pass the water bond being submitted to voters in November; surely we can take a few more months before enacting permanent and sweeping changes to California’s groundwater policies.
Unlike the water bond, which passed with wide bi-partisan support, this legislation has generated bi-partisan criticism. The agricultural community, an industry directly impacted by these proposals, has been conspicuous in its opposition. Consequently, I have joined legislators from both parties to ask Governor Brown to veto these bills. Given time, legislation can be drafted next session that respects local control and private property rights while avoiding overreaching state interference over this irreplaceable resource.

The elected City Treasurer of Escondido gets a salary from the city’s taxpayers of something north of $114,000.
You notice I wrote “gets” as opposed to “earns.” The position is part-time—just like those of the elected city council. The current treasurer, Kenneth Hugins, who has been in office for several terms (30 years and counting), maintained a private practice accounting business during nearly all of his tenure.

While supporters of the city’s charter proposal have indicated this is a change that can only be made with charter status, I do not believe it to be the case. I think it is more likely that the major barrier to affecting this change is the old boy network that still pervades among the powerful in the city.
Electing a city council that doesn’t owe allegiance to the people who have run this town for decades just might bring some fresh thinking and a new attitude for the future.

Crazy Horse: The Noble Defiant American
In describing Crazy Horse, the famed Oglala Lakota Sioux leader, author Chris Hedges observed, "There are few resistance figures in American history as noble as Crazy Horse. His ferocity of spirit remains a guiding light for all who seek lives of defiance." Arguably, Crazy Horse was our most famous Native American leader. Names such as Tecumseh, Sitting Bull, Pontiac, Black Hawk, Keokuk, Geronimo and Cochise are iconic, but Crazy Horse captured the imagination the most. He was never defeated in battle.
Born circa 1840, he led a combined tribal army against the U.S. Army in 1876-77, fighting land grabs settlers and miners who were taking from territories reserved exclusively for his people. The highlight was Crazy Horse’s 1876 victory at the Battle at the Little Big Horn in eastern Montana. Igniting Crazy Horse’s wrath was when a company of 29 troopers entered a camp to arrest an Indian for stealing a rancher’s cow. The army claimed theft, but the Indians maintained the animal wandered into the camp. It was slaughtered and the meat distributed among the people. A fight broke out and the Indians killed all of the troopers.
The unrest culminated in Crazy Horse’s surprise attack on Gen. George Crook’s force of 1,000 cavalry and infantry at the Battle of Rosebud. The Indian leader led a combined tribal army of 1,500 Lakota Sioux and Cheyenne warriors. Crook’s defeat prevented him from supporting Lt. Col. George Armstrong’s 7th Cavalry as they began looking for Crazy Horse. A week of searching ended in a surprise attack on June 25, 1876, as Crazy Horse surrounded Custer and 200-plus troopers at the Little Big Horn River. Custer and his entire unit were wiped out.

have been numerous episodes of political disgrace, financial mismanagement, and a ludicrous nickname. “America’s Finest City” is the plaintive cry of a town so dysfunctional it eventually earned a newer, snarkier moniker—“Enron by the Sea.” Escondido has done much the same thing in the little-brother way smaller cities imitate their larger brethren all too often.
There are a lot of smart people among Escondido’s leaders, and they should be listened to. But there are also a lot of smart people who do not belong to that exclusive clique who should be listened to, as well. It seems as though the current council majority is focused on listening to only the smart people they think still run the town. This is a practice fraught with peril as the city’s demographics change. San Marcos is undergoing a sea change in its demography and its politics, and is still evolving. Once a solidly red town with older, mobile-home dwelling residents wielding disproportionate electoral power, the city has become
home to a younger, more diverse, better educated population. This change is slowly turning that city politically purple.
Escondido’s demographics are also changing and fighting the tide rather than riding it will ultimately spell the end of the road for old-guard power brokers in the city. Those who are, or want to serve in elected office in Escondido would do well to consider this.

Delacroix so accurately pointed out, should be ignored or swept under the rug. PTSD is one of the most cruel things ever to befall mankind. It should be a national priority to treat our brave men and women with this disorder. Most of them became affected with PTSD while serving and protecting us, and it is our duty to never, ever, forget that. We sent them there. We must accept responsibility when they come home.
The loss of a job and the inability to find another in this "nowstable" economy stresses countless numbers to grave extremes. The death of a loved one gives us wounds from which we will never fully heal. Sadly, Mr. Delacroix was correct in all he said. I wish he had been wrong, but he was not. Every death leaves behind grief and sorrow that words simply cannot describe, but suicide is particularly vicious on the survivors because for the rest of their lives they will be thinking, "If only I had called...if only I had just dropped in for a visit...if only I knew they actually felt that badly...if only..." And I can assure you that never stops haunting one's soul. Never.
Deaths from suicide are preventable. And there are as many preventions as there are causes. Medication, group or single therapy, a simple kind word to a sufferer--these can all be invaluable in saving lives. I am unaware of any other group you can name besides bipolars where the leading cause of death is suicide, but in the end it does not matter. Whether someone's daughter died because a chemical imbalance in her body chemistry led her to take her life, or whether it was due to cruel schoolyard bullying, that girl is still dead and death is permanent. These people do not have to slip through our fingers. If we can't keep all of them, we can at least save many. It starts with awareness. It starts by understanding that events could befall any of us that would lead to contemplating suicide, no matter how stable and secure we may

Dear Editor,
I read with interest in the August 28th issue of The Paper a reader’s support of Olga Diaz’ position in favor of Prop H. This Proposition would allow a spiteful Beverly Hills developer who dumped raw chicken manure behind the homes of residents who oppose him, to build 430 homes on the former Country Club golf course property which is currently declared “permanent open space” by the Escondido City Council (Olga Diez included). In the same issue of The Paper, I also read of a hit and run accident at the corner of Country Club Road and Nutmeg, an intersection that is controlled solely by a 4-way STOP sign. Picture that same intersection with 5000 more vehicle trips per day if 430 homes are allowed to be built in that area. My guess is that the city will have to consider installation of traffic lights at that and other 4-way STOP intersections in that area. Imagine trying to get on or off the 15 or the 78 during peak traffic periods with the increased traffic this would generate. A report recently prepared by the City of Escondido also concluded that 430 new homes would use 173,600 more gallons of water per day than the golf course did worsening our drought crisis, would add hundreds of new students to our already overcrowded schools, and drive up taxpayer costs for maintenance and operations in Escondido (such as police & fire fighters) thus eliminating all property tax gains. For these reasons I have to support ECCHO and abandon my support of Olga Diaz. Prop H is not good for the future of all residents of Escondido and I urge voters to go online and read the City of Escondido’s full report before going to the polls to vote on Nov. 2nd. /s/Rosemarie Woldin Escondido, CA.
In Defense of Kent . . .
I was very intrigued by Kent Ballard's article, "Skipping Through That Lonesome
Valley," in the Sep. 4, 2014 issue of The Paper. I also read Mr. Jerome Delacroix's Letter to the Editor in the same issue, commenting on how tired he (Delacroix) was upon seeing the abundance of articles on bipolar, especially how the bipolar malady may have played a role in comedian Robin Williams' suicide. Though there was no scarcity on this subject matter, I found Kent Ballard's rendition so much more interesting, penetrating, and powerful, than all the mainstream magazine, tabloid, and newspaper articles on the same subject. And I read them all. It matters not if Kent Ballard's article on the
bipolar malady is the first, or the twenty-first. Quality is quality, and the essence of quality journalism is not predicated on what order it was printed out. Had I not kept an 'open mind,' and had I stopped reading about bipolar suicides merely because it was the second, fourth, or tenth article on the same subject, well, I would have missed reading "Skipping Through That Lonesome Valley," and I would have been the big loser. I would have missed the pathos. I would have missed the rawness of truth. I would have missed the

On Jan. 8, 1877, Crazy Horse's warriors fought their last major battle against the U.S. Cavalry at Wolf Mountain in the Montana Territory. But after enduring starvation during a long winter, Crazy Horse surrendered to protect his followers. They went to Fort Robinson in Nebraska. What followed was an unfortunate misinterpretation of statements made by Crazy Horse.
In August 1877, officers at Camp Robinson received word the Nez Perce had broken out in Idaho and were fleeing toward Canada. When asked to join the Army against the Nez Perce, Crazy Horse objected, saying he had promised to remain at peace when he surrendered. When pressed, Crazy Horse finally agreed, saying he would fight "till all the Nez Perce were killed." But his words were misinterpreted by a scout, who reported Crazy Horse had said he would "go north and fight until not a white man is left." With the growing trouble, General Crook was ordered to stop at Fort Robinson where he was incorrectly informed Crazy Horse had said he intended to kill the general. Crook ordered Crazy Horse's arrest and departed.
On the morning of Sept. 5, 1877, Crazy Horse was escorted to Fort Robinson where he was arrested. Crazy Horse struggled with a guard and was stabbed with a bayonet. He died late that night. The war chief’s body was turned over to his elderly parents, who moved it to a location which remains unknown to this day. No other Native American has caught the imagination of so many. Accordingly, the nation’s largest mountain sculpture, begun in the early 1950s, is being carved into his image near Mount Rushmore in the Black Hills.

emotion which the author describes, not as a literary mercenary writing for a big newspaper deadline, but from an author who 'was there' on the front lines, who fights the Battle Royale, to this very day. To me, Ballard's words ring high and true, and his work answers to no one. It stands on its own merit. It needs not approval nor acceptance. It has an inherent value all its own. There is an old philosophical saying that states that we as human beings do not measure true art. But rather, in truth, true art measures us. What does that mean? It simply means that if we fail to see great beauty in all its expressions, then the fault is within us not that object of

Combat zones tend to not be pretty places. When you see a close friend blown to bits by an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) you want revenge. When you see your father tortured, then hanged and shot, when you see your mother and sister tortured, raped and then killed . . . you kinda sorta want to take revenge. Only eliminate the ‘kinda sorta.” Blood runs hot in a combat zone. Niceties are not always observed. Bottom line: Expect more, not less from ISIS in the way of beheadings and mass slayings. Expect retaliation by the U.S. and our allies, in various forms, some of which will not be, and perhaps should not be, publicized.
Not a lot will change because there really is not “a different type of war.” War is War. Weapons may change, strategy may change, but, in the end, war doesn’t really change all that much. Peace . . . is not at hand.

All across the U . S . Americans will reflect on the tragic events of 13 years ago. We are moved as a nation, to pay tribute to the innocent victims of terrorists as well asto honor the valiant efforts of those brave first responders who lost their lives trying to save them. Our community, like hundreds across the nation and world, felt the loss of one of our own. Juan Pablo Cisneros was a brightyoung man with a promising future. He was the first in his family to attend college,
having earned a full scholarship to Dartmouth College. He worked as bond trader so that he could earn money to send his younger sister to college and so he could go to graduate school. He was hard at work on September 11in the offices of Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor of the World Trade Center’s South Tower. He was among the 3,040 lives cut short that terrible day. Every year on September 11, flags are flown at half-staff on government buildings to honor those who lost their lives. I urge all residents to join in this solemn tribute by displaying their flags at their homes or businesses.

In 2009, Congress designated September 11th as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. On the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, I encourage residents to unite in service in the same remarkable way that so many came together following the attacks. One way to become better prepared for future disaster situations is to join San Marcos’ Community Emergency Response Team. San Marcos will offer a 10week Community Emergency
Response Training (CERT) class starting on Saturday, September 6.
CERT is a critical community program that teaches residents basic disaster skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, and disaster medical operations. In the event of a disaster, CERT trainees will be able to help their families and peers in distress. Classes will run from 8:30 to 3 am on Saturdays at the San Marcos Fire Department Training Facility, 184 Santar Place. The Computer Store that Wouldn’t Die - Part II
Last week we revealed how we got started in this business in 1995 and how we decided to keep on doing it in spite the generally accepted opinion that small independent PC makers were soon to become an endangered species. Today the personal computer business is over 30 years old but in 1995 PCs had only been around for a dozen years and the Internet was little more than a series of bulletin boards. Dell, Gateway, IBM and Packard Bell actually designed, manufactured and serviced PCs right here in the good ole USA. They built “cookie cutter” PCs with proprietary (non-standard) components and function-integrated motherboards. This forced customers to use company repair and upgrade services.
Continue to cut City services or use Reserves? That was the question during the recession
Mayor Abed has a chart you will see on his website, on his campaign literature, even at the Chamber of Commerce Mayor Forum. Obviously it focuses on Deficits and Surplus but it’s one of those charts that leaves out so much information. I’ve added a couple more to see if they help round out the picture. (See end notes) But first, what does it mean to have a deficit budget? A deficit for Escondido is when the City creates a budget that spends more money than is expected to come in during a given year. But it does NOT mean spending more than we HAVE because Escondido (since it is not a charter city) must balance its budget and it does so every year.
During boom years, money is set aside as “Reserves” for times of economic crises — like the recession we went through a few years ago. As you can see from the chart, Escondido had

These “open architecture” PCs were much less costly to repair or upgrade. In 1995 over ten thousand independent PC makers like “The Computer Factory” accounted for nearly half the PCs sold in the USA. In addition to building PCs, the “independents” typically sold components to the “do it yourself” crowd. PCs were a relatively new thing and there were still plenty of “PC hobbyists” around. Selling PC components was a huge business. Weekly papers like “The Computer Edge” and the daily newspapers were full of ads for “open architecture” PC systems and components (hard drives, CDs, RAM. CPUs, motherboards, video and sound cards, cases, powers supplies, monitors and operating systems). It was a highly competitive, price driven business. Profit margins were low. As prices continued to drop so did quality and independent PC builders gained the reputation as being cheap alternatives to the national brands. We decided early on that we would not price compete with other independents. Our main business was building new systems and repairing and upgrading PCs. We sold components but only the high quality compo-

As you can see, Reserves were used to balance the City budget for four years, with the largest amount used in 2009/10 — the peak of the recession. And that year, all five City Council members voted for the use of those reserves, including both Council members Abed and Diaz. They both voted for the same budget with the use of Reserves.
Here’s one more chart, (see end notes) which shows the General Fund Operating Budget over ten years. I show this chart because I hear people say that during the recession the City “just kept on spending.” As you can see over the course of three years there were cuts of $9.6 million in services to the community; Reserves were used to fill what the Council majority considered vital gaps. Mayor Abed was elected in November of 2010 and six months later he demanded a balanced budget without the use of Reserves, He voted for a budget that closed a branch library, took $700,000 from Recreation and defunded community organizations —

Over the years low profit margins and the shrinking “do it yourself” market took its toll and the low end independents went sneakers up. Our business continued to grow as savvy business and home users found our PCs to be real values in performance, reliability and maintenance and our service was prompt and thorough. Comp USA, Good Guys, PC Club and Circuit City came and went and never really understood that the key to customer satisfaction is service. With great fanfare Gateway opened nearly 200 Gateway Country Stores across America to get “close to the people” only to close them a few years later. They never fig-
