Volume 50 - No. 40

By Friedrich Gomez

Now that summer has collapsed into fall, it’s time to enjoy some great, live entertainment!

Most of us have been starved for good, live entertainment of late. Television, both network and cable, has become repetitious and boring. The pandemic has changed our entire world and entertainment has suffered.

Pala Casino to the rescue!

Pala Casino Resort & Spa, the ultimate “Crown Jewel” of San Diego County’s Indian casinos, continues to outshine and out-do itself in big Las Vegas-style entertainment and nightlife. Pala Casino has earned their reputation as a top destination for those who seek first class live entertainment.

Top artists are delighted to accept engagements at Pala Casino because they know they’ll be performing in a first class entertain-

ment center with appreciative crowds and in a safe environment where all measures are taken to protect the artists and the audience. Pala’s beautiful outdoor Starlight Theater under the stars is a welcoming home for major artists. Pala Casino and Spa has booked not one but two big consecutive weekend entertainment events.

The huge Weekend Dance Explosion on Saturday, October 10th, features top Tribute Artists saluting the likes of Madonna,

Donna Summer, and KC and the Sunshine Band . . . followed by Felix Cavaliere’s “The Rascals” on Friday, October 16th. Two HUGE concerts one week after the other. Here’s what you can expect from both concerts:

DANCE EXPLOSION TRIBUTE CONCERT Tribute artists salute three immortal rock ‘n’ roll giants on Saturday, October 10 at 8:00 p. m. at Pala Casino Resort & Spa. All three tribute performing artists will perform, one-by-one, on

the same stage at Pala’s Starlight Theater. Pala Casino, which is only a short hop, skip and jump north of Escondido, making Pala “the” place to be if you want to experience what David Letterman once humorously described as: “More fun than human beings should be allowed to have!”

Let’s take a look at the three titans who will be recreated on stage by brilliant tribute artists in this most amazing music extravaganza aptly titled “Dance Explosion.”

As with many of you, if I would close my eyes and dream of the ultimate “Dance Explosion Concert,” such a fantasy dream would have to include the best-selling female music artist of all-time (who sold over 300-million records worldwide) and who is officially listed in the Guinness Book of World Records: Madonna. MADONNA MIND-BLOWING TRIVIA.

1. She is the best-selling female music artist of all-time (who sold over 300-million records worldwide) and is officially listed in the Guinness Book of World Records! 2. Madonna, is chronicled as the most successful solo artist in the history of the U. S. Billboard Hot 100 chart, and who holds the world record as the highest-grossing solo

I guess that’s not what you had in mind when you asked me to mount the moose head.

Money can’t buy happiness but it can buy vodka, comic books, midget strippers, a pony and . . . Oh, God! I’m so happy! Planned a romantic evening at home with a nice bottle of wine.

touring artists of all-time ($1.4-billion) in annual concert ticket sales, making Madonna officially the wealthiest woman in the music business! 3. Madonna, is regarded as the “Most impactful figure in popular culture,” because her talent refused to be limited to just setting world records in music. Instead, she segued her talents when she successfully crossed-over to starring in motion pictures such as “Dick Tracy” (which shot to No. 1 in the U. S. box office) and the historic movie, “A League of Their Own,” (a fact-based motion picture of women’s baseball teams during WWII when U. S. men were serving in the military overseas), and also “Evita,” which earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress. And yes, Pala Casino Resort & Spa made certain that Madonna is reenacted in their Dance Explosion tribute concert!

With Madonna’s persona already on tap to be recreated on stage, my knees buckle because on the same stage there is yet another world favorite and a ‘natural’ for the theme of “Dance Explosion.”

Closing my eyes once again, my Dance Explosion dream concert who the London Times Newspaper in Europe described as “The undisputed Queen of Disco,” the fivetime Grammy Award winner, Donna Summer! Not sure what my girlfriend is doing though. I dated the Pillsbury Dough Boy and all I got was this lousy yeast infection. The thing with the Carpenters is . . the music is a bit thin.

I’d like to thank the Y chromosome for making me the man I am today. Barefoot and pregnant is no way to go through life. It is, however, the way to go through Walmart. If I don’t rinse this soap off I can save a lot of time at my next shower. How does it change many dyslexics to take a light bulb? The worst part about wearing a cape is the toilet.

I heard the adjective left the noun because it had a tendency to be possessive.

Fun fact: Santa's suit was white before he dipped it into the blood of a thousand naughty children. I'm a man of my convictions, but far more proud of my acquittals.

Trump could achieve world peace, and all Democrats would do is bitch about how he "undermined the defense sector."

DONNA SUMMER COLORFUL TRIVIA. 1. World’s first female music artist to have both the #1 single (“MacArthur Park”) and #1 album (“Live and More”) simultaneously on the Billboard charts! 2. The 5-time Grammy Award Winner is known worldwide as “The Undisputed Queen of Disco.” Donna Summer impersonator will definitely rock the house at Pala’s “Dance Explosion.” 3. Donna Summer was selected to perform on January 1985 for the Nationally-Televised 50th Presidential Gala for the Second Inauguration of U. S. President Ronald Reagan. 4. When the Queen of Disco died on May 17, 2012 of lung cancer, the world mourned and she was eulogized in foreign lands and in foreign languages by kings, presidents, and prime ministers, especially in Europe where she had lived and performed for many years. 5. In May 2012, it was announced that her music and songs would be added to a list of preserved recordings to make certain they would never become extinct for future generations to enjoy. Such recordings were officially added to the U. S. Library of Congress National Recording Registry. She truly belonged to the world, and not just the United States. 6. Her San Diego Connection. But, not even death could stop her influence, which continued on, even right here in San Diego County.

In 2017 “Summer: the Donna Summer Musical,” a biographical musical featuring her songs made its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, before it ventured off to the bright lights of New York’s Broadway!

Like a dancer’s pirouette, Donna Summer’s image and voice comes full circle back to San Diego County. Once again, she returns to our region, this time to Northern San Diego County, where she will be reenacted at beautiful Pala Casino Resort & Spa, for their Dance Explosion tribute concert. If you are going to have any “dance theme” event, with star tribute artists, then it would not be complete without Donna Summer. The unbelievable presence of Donna Summer’s image recreated in such a “tribute concert” on the same stage as Madonna would be a towering event; a magnum opus performance before my disbelieving eyes and ears! Once again, she returns to our region, this time to Northern San Diego County, where she will be recreated at beautiful Pala Casino Resort & Spa, for their Dance Explosion tribute concert.

With Madonna and Donna Summer already set to be recreated on the Dance Explosion stage by the best

of tribute artists I need to close my eyes for the final performer whom I would just die to see up there with these two immortal female songbirds at the Dance Explosion event.

If you’re going to have a Dance Explosion theme on a music stage event, you’re going to have to ignite the fuse under people and make it impossible for them to stay seated. You want a band with a “carbonated” sound that snaps, pops, and crackles and gets people in a happy, celebratory mood and makes them sing along and even dance. So if you want that “infectious” sound that makes “toe tapping” impossible to stop, then I would go with a band that has been getting people to their feet and the dance band that fills those shoes is KC and the Sunshine Band, KC AND THE BAND TRIVIA.

SUNSHINE

1. KC and the Sunshine Band have performed around the world for over 37 years and have sold over 100 million records! 2. KC and the Sunshine Band songs have been featured in over 200 motion picture soundtracks! 3. KC and the Sunshine Band became the first band, since The Beatles, to score four #1 singles within a 12-month period!

KC and the Sunshine Band will be brought to explosive life by the best of tribute artists singing such songs as “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty,” and “That’s The Way I Like It,” along with the equally snappy “Get Down Tonight.” OVER-TURNING WRONG TRIVIA ON GLOBAL INTERNET.

On a FOX NEWS interview, KC and the Sunshine Band founder, Harry Wayne Casey, corrected many trivia tests circulating the global internet which were false. Casey made clear that the band’s partial name “Sunshine” was a tribute to his native sunshine state of Florida. The “KC” portion of the band’s name was actually derived from the founder’s surname (“Casey” which sounds like “KC”). In the exclusive interview which went viral due to the band’s global popularity, Casey further pointed out other interesting trivia facts, such as: the guitar solo in “Get Down Tonight” was actually electronically sped-up to twice its normal speed!

Also, their hit song “Shake Your Booty,” was originally titled: “Shake Your Tootie Fruities.” (Not “Shake Your Cooties” as many trivia quizzes on social media incorrectly cited.) Also, “Get Down Tonight” was originally titled “What You’ll Want Is What You’ll Get” in the early

New York promoter and agent, Sid Bernstein, was presenting The Beatles in concert at Shea Stadium. As with The Beatles, Bernstein had seen (and heard) the greatest rock groups on the planet. After only forty-five minutes in witnessing Felix Cavaliere’s “The Rascals” at another venue, the stunned worldrenowned promoter/agent managed to compose himself enough to utter the words: “I felt I had just heard the greatest group I ever heard in my life! They were so, so dynamic!” Sid Bernstein was not alone in his opinion; many of the world’s greatest figures in music agreed with him.

Recognizing a once-in-a-lifetime golden opportunity, Bernstein decided to become the group’s manager.

THE BAND’S ORIGINAL NAME SUGGESTIONS WERE TOO OBSCENE. “The Young Rascals” were given their name by comedian Soupy Sales who hosted the popular children’s television show “Lunch With Soupy” from 1953 to 1966. During the show’s run, Soupy agreed to sign the group on as his backup band. Widely known for his offstage propensity for risqué and obscene humor, Soupy Sales commenced to fire off a list of ridiculous and unprintable expletive name-suggestions for the

The Paper San Diego County Gets at least a Two Week Reprieve on More Restrictive Tier Assignment

After being on the brink of falling into the most restrictive Purple Tier, the County will remain in Tier Two, or the Red Tier, of the state’s system of assessing COVID-19 risk, the state announced Tuesday. The change means indoor activities that recently reopened can continue for at least two more weeks.

The County’s adjusted case rate dropped from 8.1 (unadjusted 7.9) to 6.9 per 100,000 and is now below the Red Tier maximum of 7.0, allowing it to remain in that tier of the state’s reopening plan. The figures used to calculate this new rate are from Sept. 6 through Sept. 12. “It is because of the efforts of most San Diegans that the County is able to remain in the Red Tier,” said Wilma Wooten, M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “The only way for the case rate to continue going down is if all local residents take the necessary precautions to avoid getting and spreading COVID-19.” Local numbers for COVID as of Tuesday included: Escondido, 2,147; Valley Center, 153; Pauma Valley, 25; Pala, 75.

The region will now remain in the Red Tier for at least 14 days but

Page 4 •

could drop to the Purple Tier if the local case rate goes above 7.0 per 100,000 residents for two consecutive weeks. It would take three weeks for the County to be able to move to Tier 3 or the Orange Tier but not before driving its case rate down below 3.9 cases per 100,000 residents for 14 consecutive days.

Reopening tiers are based on a county’s case rate and testing positivity percentage. The County’s positivity percentage, now 3.8%, has been below the 4.9% that qualifies it for the Orange Tier since the state adopted the new ranking system. However, the state goes with the more restrictive measure to assign tiers. The California Department of Public Health assesses counties on a weekly basis. Palomar Health signs CEO to New Contract

The Palomar Health board of directors has agreed to a new 27-month contract with its current CEO, Diane Hansen. Her previous contract expired on September 10.

In announcing their decision to extend a new contract to Hansen, which she accepted, Palomar Health Board Chair Richard Engel, MD said Hansen and her administrative team had engineered “a remarkable turnaround in many important areas” of the organization since taking the helm in 2017,

that they've already narrated that story many times. The story makes them walk down the memory lane and relive the past.

#3 I now stopped bargaining with vegetables & fruits vendors. A few pennies more is not going to burn a hole in my pocket but it might help the poor fellow save for his daughter’s school fees. #4 I pay my waitress a big tip. The extra money might bring a smile to her face. She is toiling much harder for a living than me #5 I stopped telling the elderly

#7 I give compliments freely and generously. Compliments are a mood enhancer not only for the recipient, but also for me. And a small tip for the recipient of a compliment, never, NEVER turn it down, just say "Thank You."

#8 I have learned not to bother about a crease or a spot on my shirt. Personality speaks louder than appearances. #9 I walk away from people who don't value me. They might not know my worth, but I do. #10 I remain cool when someone plays dirty to outrun me in the rat race. I am not a rat and neither am I in any race.

first as interim CEO and later as permanent president and CEO.

Some of the successes Dr. Engel cited are: raising the system’s patient quality rankings in Leapfrog to A and B, instituting a capital improvement project that has invested more than $70 million in equipment replacement and program expansion, opening a new Crisis Stabilization Unit, negotiating a new labor agreement and improving the organization’s financial foundation. He also cited her strong leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an effort to set precedent for all future CEO contract negotiation, the board consulted with multiple nationally recognized experts in CEO contracts and compensation packages and drafted a contract that is commensurate with comparable hospital system CEOs. “The contract is based on credible, independent and unbiased market analysis that is fair to both Ms. Hansen and the organization,” Dr. Engel said, adding that the COVID pandemic impact on executive compensation was factored into the proposal. “I am confident Diane is the right leader for Palomar Health and I can unequivocally say we are very fortunate to have her as our CEO at this extremely critical time,” Dr. Engel said. break a relationship. My ego will keep me aloof, whereas with relationships I will never be alone. #13 I have learned to live each day as if it's the last. After all, it might be the last.

#14 I am doing what makes me happy. I am responsible for my happiness, and I owe it to myself. Happiness is a choice. You can be happy at any time, just choose to be! •••• A Question: Saucering: Does anyone still do it? I remember as a young lad, about a hundred years or so ago, that my grandma Tollefson and many of my aunts and uncles in Minnesota, and some in Nebraska, would "saucer" their coffee.

You'd pour a cup of hot coffee then tilt your cup and let coffee run into your saucer, presumably to cool. Then you would sip it from your saucer. Haven't heard or seen of that practice for years. I suspect this was a midwestern thing, perhaps brought over from the Scandinavian or Germanic countries. Don't recall ever seeing it in California. Anyone familiar with this practice? And is it still done?

Escondido Offers Incentives for Patrons to go “Paperless.”

The City of Escondido has launched an incentive plan for water, sewer and trash customers who sign up for paperless billing or enroll in AutoPay. Three prizes – an iPad mini and two $50 Amazon gift cards – will be awarded.

The incentive program – running until December 15, 2020 – is sponsored by Invoice Cloud, a provider of trusted, secure e-payments serving local governments and utilities nationwide. Escondido has used the Invoice Cloud platform since 2018 for online payments as well as pay-by-phone and pay-by-text options. Christina Holmes, Escondido’s director of finance. said, “Signing up for AutoPay and paperless billing can help you streamline your monthly bills and save time, and it is contactless and one less thing to remember each month. If you sign up now you will be entered to win one of the prizes generously given by the city’s billing partner, Invoice Cloud.”

young rock group to consider.

After much laughter and frivolity, Soupy Sales finally christened them, in sincerity, as “The Young Rascals.” The Young Rascals went on to score 13 Top 10 hits between 1966 to 1969. The Young Rascals would, in time, morph into simply The Rascals.

To this day, The Rascals’ founder, Felix Cavaliere, may well recall with a smile or laugh, the initial offcolor band names which Soupy Sales initially suggested, and which are wholly unprintable here.

THE RASCALS WERE ALMOST MURDERED BEFORE BECOMING FAMOUS. As the old saw has it: “The life of an artist is not always a glamorous one.” Those very words of wisdom proved, almost deadly, true for the fledgling Rascals during an early Dick Clark tour of the South. As Felix Cavaliere has recounted to the various print media: “A lot of people forget that Florida is in the South. We were doing Tampa and Orlando and places like that. We had a little Cortez, which is like a trailer, while everyone else was stuck on a horrible bus during the entire tour. Anyway, as fate would have it we broke down close to a town called Fort Pierce. It was a huge mistake!” The word ‘mistake’ was an understatement if ever there was one. Felix continues with the grisly tale.

“We would travel by ourselves with no Dick Clark representative, so we’d just get to wherever we were going without anyone pushing or pressuring us. So after our breakdown, a policeman came by and saw that we were broken down.”

Felix next recalls that he explained to the policemen their need to use the telephone to call ahead that the group wouldn’t be able to make it on time. What transpired next was a living nightmare!

“ARE YOU A BOY OR A GIRL?” A LIVING NIGHTMARE CONTINUES FOR THE RASCALS. Felix Cavaliere continues onward: “Then we went to have dinner at a little restaurant. Then, out of nowhere, these two big men walk over and one of them just sat down at our table and leaned over and said, ‘You know, I’m trying to figure out whether you’re a boy or a damn girl.’” It was at that moment in time that the group suddenly gulped, and realized they were in big trouble. Felix tried to lighten up the tense moment with levity and humor, but, his attempts to defuse the situation tanked, big time. “We tried to be funny with him and I said ‘You know, I’m not too sure

Page 5 • • October 01, 2020

myself,’ and then we realized that this cat is not fooling around. He looks at us and says, ‘You know, where we come from we chew up people like you. Lemme see your draft card!’” With the tension getting thicker by the second, Felix asks in subtle tones, “Why do you want to see my draft card for?” The man, without taking his eyes off Felix answers ominously, “Because I’m an exMarine myself.”

PEOPLE IN THE RESTAURANT BEGAN GRABBING KNIVES AND FORKS! As four young kids who just formed a rock band a few years prior, this encounter with large, grown men was beyond terrifying. The Irish lad, Gene Cornish, second youngest of the rock group, looked for reassurance from his band mates, but could easily surmise none was forthcoming as all the band members saw people in the restaurant starting to grab knives and forks, anything, to kill these long-haired bastards!

Felix reflects, “We were in for it now because the rest of the place was becoming aware of what was going on and they’re on this guy’s side. There’s a big rebel flag behind the counter. Then I start to see people grabbing knives and forks because it’s going to happen, man, and you better be ready for it.”

THEY WERE HUNGRY, BUT FROZE AND JUST COULDN’T TOUCH THEIR MEALS. Felix Cavaliere will forever recall the moment to this very day: “We had our meals on the table. We put down the money plus at least $5 extra. We didn’t touch the food. We just kind of went toward the door.”

“LEAVE THE KIDS ALONE!” THEN A SAVIOR CAME. The large man slowly rose and menacingly stalked them toward the door. Felix reflects, “There was another man who was saying ‘leave ‘em alone,’ but the large man following them didn’t want to hear it.”

Like a savior, their road manager had arrived with the Hertz rental cars, but, there was one big glitz. All the band’s equipment and gear were back in the trailer and they would have to go back and retrieve it all. Like wolves encircling fresh prey and smelling blood, the scenario seemed unending as the hulking men stayed within pouncing range. Felix remembers: “We started to go to the trailer and we saw all these people following us. It had become a ‘fun Saturday’ night thing to do for them. So, I said, ‘Let’s go to the police station. We’re not going to fight them. They’ll kill us!’”

And he was right. The burly, hulking men would dearly love any kind of physical confrontation with the younger, inexperienced boys that could not hide their fear. It seemed to heighten their perverse sense of enjoyment.

As it turned out, the police were of little help, but, still far better than any alternative. “But this guy in the police station wasn’t that interested in helping us. He didn’t even want us in the police station!” Cavalier remembers incredulously.

FELIX CAVALIERE SAYS THE MAGIC WORDS! As band member Gene Cornish might say, it seemed that any sliver or remnant of Irish luck was far from becoming a reality. Felix knew that the police were their last straw for survival so, after being told by the police that they were not welcomed in the station, Felix managed to say the magic words: “I told him I was going to phone the state police and that seemed to shake him up,” Felix said. “The police put two guys with us and said, ‘All right, all right, never mind, we’ll go along!’” UP TO 60 MOTORCYLISTS SHOW UP TO KILL THE RASCALS! “At the station, two police officers were assigned to us, but these guys didn’t seem to care at all. But they came to watch us unload the trailer, anyway.” Felix emphasizes his next point: “This is the truth, there must have been 50 or 60 motorcycles waiting for us! On each of the motorcycles, there was at least one person. Some of them had as many as three! They were going to kills us! They definitely were not just going to hurt us!

One of the police officers finally got out of his car and reluctantly says to the vigilante group, ‘Aaahh, go on home, now. All right, go on home.’” Like a modern fast-moving factory assembly line, the Rascals quickly moved their gear. “It was unbelievable! And the two cops would never have stopped them. It was really horrifying and you could hear the deafening vrooom, vrooom of their 60 motorcycles! And you could see in their eyes that they didn’t want to go home. They (the motorcyclists) followed us all the way to the outskirts of town. It made quite a mark on the group. Eddie Brigati (the youngest of the band) was like a child compared to the people that were going to hurt him. He got so mad that he swore he was going back in there and clean the town out with a machine gun!”

FUNNY ANECDOTE: RASCALS’ FIRST NO. 1 HIT WAS HATED BY THE BAND & CONSIDERED AN EMBARRASSMENT! History is full of irony and unexpected surprises, all of which makes for interesting trivia. Often times greatness is not easily recognized at first glance. And so it came to be, also, with The Rascals. The Rascals’ first historic number one song “Good Lovin’” is a perfect example and colorful slice of rock and roll trivia. The song broke while the group was performing at the Whiskey A Go Go, in Los Angeles. In an interview with Rolling Stone Magazine on October

1, 1970, by John Lombardi, Rascals’ guitarist, Gene Cornish, vividly recalled the historic moment: “We really didn’t want that record out, Cornish reminisces. “I didn’t like the mix of the sound. Some of the fellows tried to deny that it was our record for the first couple of weeks because we were embarrassed! When it got to be number one, they didn’t deny it (anymore).” Ironically, the song is now wideconsidered by many to be the greatest hit ever by The Rascals! FELIX CAVALIERE & THE RASCALS TOGETHER REDEFINED ROCK ‘N’ ROLL. Felix Cavaliere and his brainchild “The Rascals” -- originally composed of three Italians and an Irishman (and known as “The Young Rascals”) the group pushed the boundaries of rock ‘n’ roll’s artistic expression. Their unique music and composition styling would capture world attention.

Even the music industry’s most revered institution, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, noted The Rascals’ influential stylizing as reshaping the landscape of rock ‘n’ roll music. A MUSICAL LEGACY WHICH TAKES ONE’S BREATH AWAY Bagging gold albums, gold singles, and platinum record sales, The Rascals’ stratospheric heights secured them an immortal place in the pantheon of rock music history. In addition to their 18 chart-topping hits, the media of television was not shy at acquiescing in their direction: over 13 television appearances would ensue, including The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show, American Bandstand, The Andy Williams Show, the Bing Crosby Television Special, The Mike Douglas Show, The Joey Bishop Show, to give only a few extraordinary examples. Their popularity seemed unending, with even Rascals’ band member, Dino Danelli appearing as a bachelor contestant on TV’s popular “Dating Game.” The show’s rating soared! THE RASCALS DEFINED 1960’S AMERICA. During the 1960’s most turbulent years of the Vietnam War, racial strife, and deep ideological divisions within America, The Rascals set the standard for other bands to follow. In 1968, their anthem song “People Got to Be Free” ruled the pop charts as a monster No. 1 hit, reflecting the signs of the time. “People Got to Be Free” was a horn-punctuated plea for racial tolerance and peaceful social justice in the wake of the assassinations of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. – both murdered only months apart, and within the same year. The Rascals hit song calling for a better America was a message impossible to ignore as it sat on Billboard’s Pop Singles Chart for five weeks for all the world to hear and reflect on. So powerful did it resonate to the four

corners of the world, that two decades later, author Dave Marsh, in his book titled “Heart of Rock and Roll: The Greatest Singles of All Time,” the well-respected author stated that The Rascals’ song “People Got to Be Free” -- Will never be out of date.” In the song’s coda, Felix Cavaliere says in a half-sung, half-spoken voice that the “Train of Freedom is about to arrive any minute now,” and that “It has been long, long overdue . . . “ Like an alchemist, less than 23 days after Cavaliere issued forth those very words, “People Got to Be Free” turned gold on August 23, 1968.

Felix Cavaliere rewrote his playbook of life and drew a line in the sand: No longer would America’s premier rock and roll group, The Rascals, agree to perform at any concerts that did not feature at least one African-American act on the bill. They were no newcomers in fighting injustice. Cavaliere’s group had headed benefits such as “Soul Together” for Martin Luther King at Madison Square Garden, long before King would be assassinated. And The Rascals also helped aid Cesar Chavez and the grape strikes.

THE RASCALS DECLARED WAR ON WORLD HUNGER. The Rascals helped jolt the conscience of America and the world with their humanitarian efforts. They involved themselves with the UNICEF benefit in London, with John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Felix Cavaliere was honored when he received the 2015 Harry Chapin Legacy-Award from WhyHunger, for his humanitarian work. Cavaliere used the occasion as a clarion call: “We must do our part to end world hunger and poverty.” On Friday, October 16 at 8:00 p.m., Felix Cavaliere’s The Rascals will perform at Pala’s beautiful outdoor Starlight Theater under the stars. It’s your once-in-a-lifetime chance to be part of history. And to witness one of the greatest and influential bands and decorated bands in rock and roll history. And a band that has helped make the world a better place to live in. For more concert information, please call Pala Casino Resort & Spa at: (877) 946-7252. I hope to see you there. And just maybe, if the stars and the planets all line up, I may fulfill a dream of meeting Mr. Felix Cavaliere in person. Historic Mental Health Advances

This session, I am honored to be recognized as a “Mental Health Super Hero” by the Steinberg Institute, because of my work on mental health policy, advancing mental health parity to physical health and working to expand access to care. In addition I supported 9 bi-partisan bills, which were all forwarded to the Governor for his signature.

I co-authored three of these bills, signed by the Governor on September 25th. Senate Bill 855 (Wiener) expands Californians’ ability to obtain treatment for substance abuse and mental health disorders by requiring insurers to pay for medically necessary treatments on parity with physical health. SB 803 (Beall) creates a certification process for peer support specialists to help persons going through mental health challenges, and AB 2112 (Ramos), supports regional and local efforts to address suicide prevention. I also joined a bi-partisan majority to support legislation requiring boardand-care homes serving those with severe mental illness to notify counties of any planned closures. Other legislation requires insurers to provide psychiatric consultation to primary care physicians providing mental health care for children and mothers. Laura’s Law, authorizing court-ordered assist-

ed outpatient treatment for mentally ill individuals in participating counties will now become permanent and all counties will be required to participate, unless they formally opt out. The growing problem of homelessness, heavily impacted by substance abuse and mental illness, will be addressed through creation of a new cabinet position to coordinate and consolidate programs throughout the state. Legislation expanding the ability of Nurse Practitioners to treat patients, including the mentally ill, along with a bill creating a grant program expanding community-based responses to crisis situations, frequently caused by mentally ill individuals, all now await the Governor’s signature. Should each of these bills become law, the result will be some of the most significant changes to California’s mental health policies in decades. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

A celebration is not in order. Even though San Diego County barely missed dropping into the purple tier, there is no cause for celebrating. There is no business plan for a gym to operate 10% capacity. There is no business plan for a restaurant to operate at 25% capacity. We cannot continue to have 200,000 San Diegans out of work. As I drive around San Diego County, I see more and more businesses closing their doors. I see the people and the businesses which make up San Diego County and I see these businesses barely hanging on. Meanwhile, the State continues to move the goalposts and change the criteria when it comes to reopening. While I would like to see San Diego County open quicker, government moves slow. Even though my motion to open up businesses a few weeks ago failed, progress is being made. This week, the Board voted 4-1 to support Dr. Wooten's effort for the adjudication and revised reopening criteria to accurately reflect the dynamics of the pandemic in San Diego County. Basically, what that means, is we are asking Dr. Wooten to work with the state into

modifying our metrics.

We have lost sight of our original goal, which was hospitalizations. As of September, we are in single digit percentages of COVID patients in hospital beds. We have proven we can identify, treat, and protect the most vulnerable people in San Diego County. My COVID-19 goal is for San Diego County to have more local control and to focus less on positive cases and more on hospitalizations. I believe that will create a better balance between business and health!

Such a fantasy get-away is reminiscent of what famed author and Irish playwright, George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), once said upon first seeing California’s celebrated Hearst Castle: “This is how God would have done it, if he had the money.” Pala Casino Spa and Resort Hotel is worthy of Shaw’s extravagant praise.

Pala’s eye-popping tropical surroundings, encircled by Temecula wineries and only 5 miles from San Diego County’s oldest, historic preserve, the Wilderness Gardens Park, all have enhanced Pala’s locale and appeal, with this Crown Jewel of Casinos being featured in multiple publications, such as The San Diego Union-Tribune Newspaper, The Los Angeles Times, as well as various television news segments.

Pala Casino Resort Hotel & Spa remains enormously popular as a favorite hideaway and vacation spot with locals as well as tourists who plan their annual vacations here in San Diego County.

And even though the resort is constantly being ‘discovered’ by a growing number of people, Pala’s enchantment is nothing new to the print and visual media.

The erstwhile San Diego Magazine officially rated Pala Casino Resort Hotel & Spa as one of the top Las Vegas-style establishments as far back as November 27, 2017.

"Tell me the good news first," said Joe.

"The good news," Frank said with joy and enthusiasm, "is that there is golf in heaven. Better yet, all of our old buddies who died before me are here too. Even better than that, we're all young again. Better still, it's always Summertime and it never rains or snows. And best of all, we can play golf all we want, and we never get tired. And we get to play with all the Greats of the past.” "That's fantastic," said Joe "It's beyond my wildest dreams! So what's the bad news?" The First Family of The Stage & Screen

The Barrymore family was to be the most prolific producers of stage, screen and TV actors ever. Most of the world knows present-day Drew Barrymore, but she is merely the latest of a very, very long line of actors from the combined Drew and Barrymore families.

Space in column for their story is far too small to do it justice, so I’m limiting it to the five Barrymores who many of today’s movie lovers will recognize.

Beginning with the two brothers and sister act of John, Lionel, and Ethel Barrymore, their faces will be recognizable to those of you who love old classic movies.

Lionel (1878–1954), and Ethel (1879–1959) was followed by John the youngest of the three. Their father was Maurice Barrymore, an Indianborn British actor who had been born Herbert Blyth, and had adopted Barrymore as a stage name after seeing it on a poster in the Haymarket Theatre of London.

What disease did cured ham actually have?

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up like every two hours? Why are you IN a movie, but you're ON TV?

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground? Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They're going to see you naked anyway... Why is 'bra' singular and 'panties' plural? Why do toasters always have a setting that burns the toast to a horrible crisp, which no decent human being would eat?

If Jimmy cracks corn and no one cares, why is there a stupid song about him? Why does Goofy stand erect while Pluto remains on all fours? They're both dogs!

John  Barrymore

John was known as “the great profile” because of his distinctive Roman nose. “Jack” as he was known to fellow thespians was born Feb. 14, 1882. He made dozens of movies, both silent and sound, but became such an alcoholic he had to have his lines pasted various place on the set for him to read. If you watch one of his later films you’ll note he’s not looking at the other actors but staring off over their shoulders to see what line he has next. One of his most noted movies was “Grand Hotel,” (1932) co-starring Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford and brother Lionel. It won the Oscar for “Best Picture of the Year.”

Early in his career, Jack’s portrayal of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” led to him being called the "greatest living American tragedian.”

Barrymore's alcohol dependence meant most studios were unwilling to employ him, but MGM risked casting him in the role of Mercutio in their 1936 film “Romeo and Juliet.” To minimize disruption to the schedule, the studio put Barrymore into a sanatorium for alcoholics, but he continued to drink covertly and was

disruptive on set. Opinions on his portrayal were divided.

Ethel was the aunt of actor John Drew Barrymore, and great-aunt of today’s actress Drew Barrymore. Ethel was a stage, screen and radio actress whose career spanned six decades, and was regarded as "The First Lady of the American Theatre.” She appeared in a number of noteworthy films and radio programs.

In early days, Sir Winston Churchill was among Ethel's many friends in England. Churchill reportedly proposed to her in 1900, but she makes no mention of that in her autobiography, though she includes a photograph of herself and Churchill on the lawn at Blenheim Palace in 1899. Lionel Barrymore (April 28, 1878 – Nov. 15, 1954) was an actor as well as a film director. He won an Academy Award for “Best Actor” for his performance in “A Free Soul” (1931), and remains best known to modern audiences for the unforgettable role of the villainous Mr. Potter in Frank Capra's 1946 Christmas classic “It's a Wonderful Life.”

John Drew Barrymore (June 4, 1932 – Nov. 29, 2004), son of Jack Barrymore, joined the acting family but wasn’t as successful as older members. He was the father of today’s Drew Barrymore. He was a leading man in his second movie, “High Lonesome” (1950). He starred in “The Big Night” (1951), and was in “Thunderbirds” (1952).

Granddaughter of Jack Barrymore, Drew Blythe Barrymore (born Feb. 22, 1975) currently is an American actress, producer, director, author, entrepreneur and most recently host of a CBS talk show. She achieved fame as a child actress with her first role in “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” (1982). She is the recipient of numerous accolades, including a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a British BAFTA nomination. In 1991, following a highly publicized, somewhat notorious childhood marked by drug and alcohol abuse, Drew Barrymore released an autobiography, “Little Girl Lost,” when she was 16. Drew appeared in a string of successful films throughout the decade, including “Boys on the Side” (1995), “Mad Love” (1995), “Scream” (1996), and “Ever After” (1998). Barrymore collaborated with Adam Sandler on films, including “The Wedding Singer” (1998), “50 First Dates” (2004) and “Blended” (2014).

In 1995, Barrymore co-founded the production company Flower Films, which have produced several projects in which she has starred. In 2013, Barrymore launched a range of cosmetics under the Flower banner, which has grown to include lines in makeup, perfume and eyewear. Her other business ventures include a range of wines and a clothing line. In 2015, she released her memoir, “Wildflower.” Barrymore received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2004. The long ancestorial line of the Drew and Barrymore families make for fascinating reading, especially the careers of “Jack,” Lionel and Ethel. Drew Barrymore seems destined to be one of the most successful in that long family tree.

Money Magic

Lessons from Experienced Investors

Those who have lived a long time have done a lot, seen a lot – and can teach us a lot. And that’s certainly true when it comes to investing. Consider some of the lessons you might learn from experienced investors:

Regulate your emotions. In the investment world, there’s always something coming at us that could sound scary: political flashpoints, economic news, and even those once-in-a-generation occurrences, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. But older people may take these events in stride; in fact, baby boomers and members of the Silent Generation (born between 1925 and 1945) are coping better emotionally with the impacts of COVID-19 than younger age cohorts, according to the 2020 Edward Jones/Age Wave Four Pillars of the New Retirement study. And by keeping control of your emotions, you may be less likely to make moves such as selling quality investments with good fundamentals just because their

Since then, the vast resort empire continues to be a magnet in attracting new patrons who, in turn, spread the word to others. The “Crown Jewel of Casinos” speaks for itself, without the necessity of hype.

Not knowing of the innate and, sometimes, hidden beauty and architecture that surrounds you at Pala Casino Resort & Spa is like touring the Louvre Museum blindfolded.

If you are aware of it or not, you are surrounded by a masterpiece of classic design, everywhere. Pala Casino Resort Hotel and Spa is a AAA “FourDiamond Award-Winning” establishment for seven, soon-to-be eight, consecutive years. Its breathtaking highrise luxury hotel design is influenced by the hills of central Italy with its Tuscan-style architecture and interior design, which culminates in an astounding 507 Guestroom Hotel Tower, replete with deluxe rooms, including 82 Luxury Suites, all of which keep guests, tourists, and the visual and print media giving continued high praise. Rooms feature minibars, two phones, large flat screen televisions, and high-speed internet. Luxury Suites even come with a Jacuzzi. Pala Casino Resort Hotel & Spa continues to be a favorite vacation spot and playground for a wide variety of fun and excitement. The resort has over 2,300 slot machines, approximately 90 table

prices have fallen in the midst of an overall market decline.

Learn from experience. By definition, the older we get, the more experiences we will have. And most people do indeed learn from experience. Investors, too, benefit from having seen and done things before. Did you chase a “hot” stock only to have found it cooled off before you bought it? Did you buy too many of the same type of investments, only to see your portfolio take a bigger hit during a downturn than it would have if you had diversified? In the investment arena, as in most walks of life, patterns emerge, and once you learn to recognize them, you can learn from past mistakes.

Know yourself. When we reach a certain age, most of us know ourselves pretty well. But you don’t have to wait decades to gain this knowledge – at least not when it comes to investing. For example, you should quickly gain a good sense of your ability to withstand risk. How? Just consider how you react when the market declines sharply. If you find yourself losing sleep over your losses – even if they’re just on paper – you might be taking on too much risk for your own comfort level. Conversely, if market downturns don’t bother you as much as lack of growth in your portfolio, you might be investing too conservatively for your own risk tolerance. Take a longer-term perspective. When we’re young, we sometimes

games, and a vast variety of other fun opportunities, such as: Blackjack, Baccarat, Pai Gow Poker, Pala Roulette, Keno, Bingo, and Pala Craps, to give just a sampling. In closing, I hope this article served as a public service announcement for all our valued readers. Stay safe and God bless you all, each and everyone

are more inclined to desire instant gratification – we want results now. Translated into the investment world, this could mean we want to see big returns in a short period. However, despite the popular mythology, it’s quite hard to turn enormous profits on investments overnight – or even over weeks or months. But as the years pass, we learn the value of thinking longterm – how investments we made years ago, and have added to steadily, are now yielding results that can help build the resources we need to reach our objectives. Don’t go it alone. Some of us, when we’re young, have a tendency to think we have all the answers and don’t need much help in our endeavors. But age gives us the wisdom to recognize that, although we may have acquired much knowledge over the years, we can still use

Today it takes a very special pair of parents to raise their kids with the right values and morals.

These were the great heroes of our childhood, and they did teach us right from wrong, and how to have and show respect for each other and the animals that share this earth. You and I were born at the right time.

We were able to grow up with these great people even if we never met them.

Officially, fall is now upon us. But the weather folks tell us we’ll have a few more days of rather warmish days . . in the 90’s. I don’t know about you but I’ve had a great deal of difficulty in adapting to fall. Reason? Football just isn’t the same. Have had a hard time getting excited about college football . . even more so with pro ball.

It just doesn’t seem right. But, then, very little about the year 2020 seems right. Our world had pretty much been turned upside down. Like you, I’m anxious to see “the good old days” return! And sooner, rather than later!

Diego County have regular driveby tours whereby members or guests, in their own autos, drive by a list of famous homes and architectural wonders. So, it's common that visitors to the Valley Center History Museum frequently ask the question, "Why don't you print a list of famous homes" or "can you give me the address of [celebrity]." While such a list might work in places like Coronado or Mission Hills, the same can't be said of Valley Center or Pauma Valley where virtually every home with a pedigree is hidden behind gates or at the end of a long obscure driveway. Here is installment 22 focusing on these invisible homes. One of the most famous homes in the area, the Victorian estate commonly known as the Betty Crocker house, could easily be seen for years at its location on Miller Road. That, however, is no longer possible because a solid fence now obscures the home from eyes of passers-by. The remarkable 1879 historic adobe home on Valley Center Road owned for many years by actordancer Fred Astaire is protected by a gate and a long private driveway to its site. The same is true of the home on Lake Wohlford Road known as the Frank Lloyd Wright house, although it was actually designed by his architect son patterned after an existing home built

Here are some other commonlyasked questions: How can I find the Old Castle?

The road on Old Castle Road takes its name from this home built in 1893 whose owner wanted to create a replica of an ancient feudal castle that was home of his Scottish ancestors. A three-level stone tower features a turret with walls three feet thick. This is a private resident and is not open to the public. Can I have the address of the June Allyson/Dick Powell home?

This Spanish colonial home built by the actors in 1945 was open to the public several years ago in a tour sponsored by the local Historical Society. It is a private home and, even with the address publicly known, the property is gated and not easily seen from its location on Cole Grade Road. Where is the mansion of Mae West?

A common misconception, the barn-like home owned by the onetime movie sex symbol, was not an estate, but a small house built for relatives in the midst of a large peach orchard. The actress, however, did visit on occasion.

by his famous father.

Wm. Shakespeare is purportedly to have asked, “What’s in a name?” I would like to ask, “What’s in a date?” We remember dates – birthdays, weddings, deaths, wars, and notable events in our lives. There is the big date, November 3, which, according to some, will reveal the truth of Covid 19, both the Republican and Democratic Parties, and so much of the news we have so desperately wanted to know the truth about. And, of course, who will be our next President. Will November 3 be a day to remember? It all depends on the response of the people. Some have said it will further divide the country. At the moment, it seems that the civil and social unrest has already drawn up battle lines. Protesters and militia groups confront each other with slogans and guns, gestures and violence. It is difficult

to imagine that sujch events of violence in Oregon, Minnesota, Illinois and Wisconsin have taken place. Will it all crumble like it did in Lebanon and Syria? Is it all the judgment of God on an apostate nation? Have we brought on our own destruction? There is a call for humility, wisdom, justice, racial and gender equality, and repentance on the part of many. How do we get these implemented, if possible?

I believe it begins with each citizen, which means you and me. How do we believe, behave, relate, and fulfill what is a responsible life? Can, you or I as one person, make a difference? Is being good greater than bad, having love stronger than hate, doing service better than self-indulgence, practicing forgiveness above revenge? Jesus, two thousand years ago, set a standard and challenge for the people of His day, and ours, to be a light instead of darkness, preserving as salt versus rottenness and decay, and leaven as a life changing force for good as opposed to a force of destruction. What’s in a day or particular date? As you finish each day, ask yourself what you contributed to make living great, both for others and for yourself. Then you will have the answer. You are invited to call 760 746 6611 for prayer, counsel, and friendship.

A Weekly Message from the Mayor of Your Community published in the belief that it is important for elected leaders to communicate with their constituents and that constituents have a means of hearing from their elected leaders.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones

San Marcos claims communications awards

The City of San Marcos was recently recognized with two prestigious awards from the California Association of Public Information Officials (CAPIO).

Two projects received CAPIO’s top honor, an EPIC award, for the San Marcos Creek Project logo and the San Marcos Creek Project groundbreaking ceremony. The logo and groundbreaking ceremony were created by the City with support from JPW Communications.

These awards are a testament to the importance we place on keeping our community informed and involved on key infrastructure projects. The San Marcos Creek Project is a three-year, $104 million construction project that will raise the roadways and bridges over San Marcos Creek. This important effort will reduce seasonal flooding that has plagued our area and restore habitat, along with other infrastructure improvements. The project, 30 years in the making, is the largest in the City’s history.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

When you read this article, we will be right at the beginning of the mail-in vote season. So, I want to talk about the election one more time. I know you’ve heard this, but who you choose, especially locally, is a big deal. The decisions they make really do impact the community.

As a consequence, I’ve been knocking on doors supporting candidates who I think will do the best job. And by that, I mean leaders who will put the community first and not be partisan or beholden to special interests through donations. As I’ve knocked on doors, I’ve found the whole spectrum of voters. Some are very informed, and others are too tied up with their families, their work, and the general challenges of life. We’ve all been there. But this year, I would ask that you do some research before you vote. Look at the candidates’ statement, and their resume. Does the resume match their claims of expertise. Experience does matter. If you read carefully, I think you will see who is best for the community. Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi,

Through a new Vista is Open campaign, the City is helping local businesses survive during the pandemic.

Vista is Open is part of the City’s Businesses Economic Recovery Plan, which was developed in response to the devastating impacts on the business community as a result of the COVID-19 crisis. The program gives local merchants an exclusive online platform to market their services and products to customers, free of charge, whether it's a restaurant, print shop, retail shop or other small business. It also allows residents who have been financially impacted by the shutdown to benefit through special pricing and deals. Our local small businesses are the backbone of our community and we want to help them survive and thrive! Visit VistaIsOpen.com to learn more.

Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss

The Oceanside Chamber is part of a coalition of 20 business organizations that have reached out to San Diego County leadership regarding reopening requirements in the latest public health orders. If you are concerned about the survival of small businesses in San Diego County, I am asking you to join these efforts in urging the Board of Supervisors to ease re-opening restrictions on businesses.

In the most recent County public health orders, there are specific requirements related to indoor dining that were added by the County Public Health Department and not required by the State.

The State requirements are already burdensome enough to our local businesses. Additional requirements from our County health officials will only increase the likelihood that many of our small businesses will ultimately fail. We are asking County leaders to refrain from any additional requirements on our small businesses that were not mandated by the State, and to remove those they have already put in place

"So," the doctor says, "You must decide how many inches you want. But I understand that you have been married for over thirty years and this is something you should discuss with your wife. If you had a five incher before and get a nine incher now she might be a bit put out. If you had a nine incher before and you decide to only invest in a five incher now, she might be disappointed. There’s the worry about Covid 19 infecting our families and friends, many of us haven’t been able to go to work for months, we can’t go to church, we wear masks to shop and we’re stuck at home because there is no place to go. Anarchist loot and destroy in the hearts of major cities, our political leaders further divide us by spewing hatred in efforts to energize their voter base. We don’t have the normal Fall World Series or football season to distract us and we can’t even drown our sorrows at the neighborhood bar.

Will we ever “snap out of it”?

“Cocooning is the act of insulating or hiding oneself from the normal social environment, which may be perceived as distracting, unfriendly, dangerous, or otherwise unwelcome, at least for the present.”

As a nation we “cocooned” during the period following 09/11/2001, we did it during the financial markets meltdown in 2008 and we seem to be doing it now. We’re deferring major decisions and life plans. There is a feeling of uneasiness that makes us want to hunker down until it’s all over. We feel it and bet you do too, but why?

In a twist of irony, Justice Ginsberg’s death and the ensuing uproar over her replacement spotlighted something of which we all should take note. Prior to his death in 2016 Anthony Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg were the intellectual leaders respectively of the conservative and progressive wings of the US Supreme Court. They were judicial polar opposites. Yet they did not hate one another, indeed they were best friends. Their families celebrated together and they often helped one another even with the writing of opposing opinions. Their humanity and civility should be a wake-up call for all of us. Don’t let the activists and politicians divide us. We are a hell of a lot better than they are.

Back to computers- We often talk about low cost PC specials advertised on the WWW and at Superstores like Best Buy and Costco. Dell and HP don’t design and build these PCs, they buy them from China. Built as cheaply as possible, they are sold to “price shoppers” who have little concern or

understanding of quality, reliability and performance, only price. There is nothing wrong with competing for “price shopper” business. They represent the majority of retail shoppers and somebody has to do it. The electronics (motherboard, CPU and RAM) in cheap computers may be low in performance but they are of standard quality. The way you cheapen a PC is by using cheap moving parts like Seagate hard drives, twenty five cent fans, flimsy cases and cheap fasteners. For laptops the list includes low quality plastic enclosures, hinges, strain reliefs and screen mounts.

I would like to pay tribute to JJ Cale, and would like to know where he lived? After the 2013 death of the legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist, many fans wanted to pay tribute by leaving flowers or other memorabilia at his home. However, Cale was reclusive and publicityshy and tried to remain out of the public eye. The Historical Society, therefore, respected that privacy and did not disclose the address. This policy is employed with other famous persons such as actress Irene Ryan, who played Granny on "The Beverly Hillbillies." In this case, the owners prefer that the location not be publicly disclosed, and the Historical Society respects that wish.

However, there are some exceptions to the privacy policy. If the home of a famous person has been listed for sale with the name, occupation and street address of that celebrity publicly available on an MLS real estate listing, the information is considered public. An example is the property owned for decades by actor-bodybuilder Steve Reeves which was promoted as the "Spanish Hacienda Built by Hercules" with the sub-head, "The 14-acre Mission-style adobe ranch of 'Steve Reeves."

And, finally, the most requested question in recent memory: How can I visit Rancho Guejito?

This historic 24,000-acre property is the last original, intact Mexican land grant ranch still in existence in what is now California. In late March of this year, the owners of the property offered to host public tours of the site under sponsorship of the Valley Center History Museum. Plans were to tour the site and discover its rich history and enjoy the wines from grapes grown on site. The Coronavirus pandemic, however, scuttled those plans. There is no date for a future tour, but museum members will be the first to be informed if it is rescheduled. While the museum remains temporarily closed, this weekly column responds to frequently-asked questions. For more information, contact the History Museum by mail, email at vchistory.org or by telephone at (760) 749-2993. A volunteer is on duty and responds to all inquiries.
