2019 IS AN HISTORIC ANNIVERSARY YEAR. It’s hard to believe that 2019 marks the 54th Anniversary of The Beatles’ historic concert here at San Diego’s old Balboa Stadium. It was an event which placed San Diego on the front cover of cosmopolitan newspapers, in various foreign languages, worldwide. It was a moment chiseled in history for all-time.

The concrete edifice at the time of the British Invasion was already over half a century old, having been built back in 1914 as part of the 1915 Panama-California World Exposition to celebrate the opening
Woodrow Wilson’s visit to Balboa Stadium would see (and hear) the very first U. S. Presidential speech to ever use an electronic voice amplification system.
However, before Britain’s immortal foursome from Liverpool, England first set their celebrated footprints on Balboa Stadium grounds, the historic stadium was already old and legendary – on its own might.
Four years later, on September 19, 1919, the 28th President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, spoke in front of over 50,000 people at Balboa Stadium (even though seating capacity at the time was only 34,000).

Almost exactly 8 years-to-the-day after President Wilson’s famous speech endorsing the creation of The League of Nations, aviation’s legendary Lone Eagle, Charles Lindbergh, visited San Diego, where history’s immortal “Spirit of St. Louis” aircraft was built by Ryan Airlines. Lindberg -- one of America’s greatest loved heroes of all-time – made one of the grandest and most spectacular entrances in modern times when his low-flying plane flew at only 100-feet over Balboa Stadium, dipping his aircraft’s wings and circling the stadi-

um 8 times! At a time when airplanes were still a miraculous marvel, his daring and electrifying flyby at a low elevation of only 100feet drew a deafening roar from the stunned celebrants below!
Lindberg landed and was then paraded through the city of San Diego en route to Balboa Stadium where a massive 60,000 wildlyenthused crowd greeted him (10,000 more than President Wilson) as if he were a legendary emperor returning to the gates of Rome. Newspapers around the globe published photos and reported to the world in bold print that the adoring Balboa Stadium crowd had to, literally, be restrained and physically held-back by almost 700 U. S. Marines!
By the time history’s revolutionary and most popular architects of rock ‘n’ roll music arrived for their firstand-only concert in San Diego, Balboa Stadium was already adorned with a rich legacy of her own. But, whereas the historicity of the 1915 Panama-California World Exposition, and the past visit of President Woodrow Wilson, and even Charles Lindberg at Balboa Stadium are relegated mostly to history books and -- realistically speaking -- not widely-known to the

Deep Thoughts of a Retired Man
I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a cold beer. The day was really quite beautiful, and the drink facilitated some deep thinking. My wife walked by and asked me what I was doing, and I said, "Nothing."
She then said that’s what you did yesterday—to which I replied—"I WASN’T DONE , SO I'M IN THE MIDDLE OF FINISHING RIGHT NOW." The reason I said "nothing" instead of saying "just thinking" is because she then would have asked, "About what?" At that point I would have had to explain that men are deep thinkers about various topics, which would lead to other ques-
memory banks of those living today, the concert of The Beatles is still a fact as evergreen, ever-present, and vividly remembered, as if only yesterday. Even for many of us who were not even alive back then. It was a moment in time, like no other.
WHEN THE BEATLES CAME TO TOWN.
Beatlemania fans here. Now, for the second straight year, the Beatles 1965 U. S. Tour schedule, again, did not include San Diego and Beatles fans here decided they had enough, and loudly vocalized their discontent with Mayor Curran’s office, entreating him to intervene on their behalf and bring the four Mop-Tops to San Diego.
Little did anyone know at the time that a historic change of events
not make a ‘live appearance’ on American television until February 9, 1964, on The Ed Sullivan Show. It was there, on The Ed Sullivan Show, that they would make incredulous history. The Beatles would be watched by a staggering viewing audience of over 73-million strong, in over 23-million households across America. Such an expanse of humanity glued to their television sets would amount to 34% of the entire population of the United States at the time. It was a massive, unprecedented, and historic televised event.
It was a sunny day in March of 1964 when San Diego Mayor Frank Curran’s office was stormed by Beatles fans demonstrating and carrying signs that read, “Bring Us the Beatles!” It was a friendly demonstration with Mayor Curran laughing and smiling broadly. San Diego was not officially on the Beatles’ tour schedule for that summer and San Diego’s Beatles fan club president, Kathy Sexton, organized the protest which was widely-reported by the print and visual media. The fact that the Beatles overlooked San Diego as a stopover point in their first 1964 U. S. concert tour did not sit well with tions.
Finally I pondered an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the groin? Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the groin, but how could they know?
Well, after another beer, and some more heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with an answer to that question Getting kicked in the groin is more painful than having a baby, and even though I obviously couldn't really know, here is the reason for my conclusion. A year or so after giving birth, a woman will often say, "It might be nice to have another child." On the other hand, you never hear a guy say, "You know, I think I would like another kick in the groin."

"Lexophile" describes those that have a love for words, such as "you can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish," or "To write with a broken pencil is pointless."

“According to the Nielsen Ratings’ audience-measurement-system, the show had the largest number of viewers that had been recorded for a U. S. television program, to that time.” The Beatles would morph into, arguably, the greatest and most influential rock ‘n’ roll group in world history. They would, most definitely, reshape the landscape of American pop culture and seduce millions, worldwide, to their every beck-and-call. Like the seductive sounds of the ancient Sirens of Greek mythology, rabid Beatles fans would charge their stage, dodging security personnel, scaling barriers and fences, screaming uncontrollably, with girls succumbing to a dead faint in the wake of pandemonium. By the hundreds, riot police often carried these star-struck fans -

mind. Two people were with me when I got the diagnosis; my son and a special friend. I remember the tears came for a few minutes, then I dried my eyes and said “OK, what are my options; what do I do and where do we go from here?” After all the options were discussed I took some time to determine what it was I needed to do for me! Remember, each of us is different; we have varying needs; our bodies respond differently to treatments, etc, so your decision needs to be right for you. Shortly thereafter, the decision was made; action was taken, and here I am almost a 20 years survivor. You can be too! You have to stay positive in spite of life’s challenges. And remember to wear ‘pink’ ribbons, a symbol of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month – As Breast Cancer Awareness Month approaches each year, I always think back to that time for me. There is nothing scarier than to hear the doctor say “Yes, the biopsy shows cancer.” You have tried to reconcile with yourself that it may be cancer but to actually hear the words is devastating. I remember when I heard those words almost 20 years ago. Around that time was when there were more and more breast cancer survivors than there had been prior to that, so that was encouraging. I knew several friends in prior years that had died of the disease, so when you hear it yourself, that’s the first thing that comes to

- their limp, unconscious bodies -to safety.
The world of entertainment had never before seen anything like Beatlemania. In city after city, John, Paul, George, and Ringo, became a lightning rod of sorts. This unlikely foursome, springing forth from unpretentious beginnings in Liverpool, England, would do nothing short of revolutionizing the entire music industry.
However, tidbits of hidden fact and drama were masked behind-thescenes, largely unknown to the general public, then and now. This hidden drama would find its way, from east to west, all the way to sunny San Diego.
Beginning in Eastern America, the unstoppable Beatlemania tidal wave of popularity that was sweeping the music world was so formidable, and so overwhelming, that the Beatles received a (little known) request from the U. S. White House in Washington, D. C., asking for a small bid of recognition from the long-haired foursome. In August of 1964, the White House press office asked the Beatles to agree to be photographed alongside the newly-installed American president, Lyndon B. Johnson, in his plans to lay a wreath on the grave of President John F. Kennedy, who

Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, politely refused the request on the grounds that it was not within the guidelines of the Beatles to accept “official invitations” from American political partisan factions during their initial tour.
All the while, San Diego fans were waiting, watching, hoping, that the phenomenally popular Beatles would, somehow, see their way to perform in San Diego. Officially, the city of San Diego would not make the cut in the Beatles first 1964 massive tour schedule. However, this would all change the following year, due to unforeseen forces quietly working behind the scenes at the time. A secret plan that would soon explode into reality – and San Diego’s Balboa Stadium would be in the cross-hairs.
The mop-top Beatles were not only dazzling in their music and onstage performances but they had a rare ‘gift of gab’ during their press conferences which catapulted them to even further, dizzying heights of popularity. It was almost too much to grant them -- they were not only the greatest iconic and culturallyinfluentially rock ‘n’ roll band in world history – but they were also the fastest-on-the-draw with amusing adlibs that would make the most seasoned standup comic turn green with envy, especially since the Beatles improvised without cue cards. Beatles humor would play-out, especially in San Diego, where San Diego reporters would bring out the best in the Beatles’ arsenal of wit and improvised retorts. The Beatles would fall in love with San Diego’s bayside locale and beach atmosphere, and palm trees everywhere, but we’re getting ahead of our story.

The Paper • Page 4 • October 3, 2019 Former Orange Glen High School Teacher, Convicted Sex Offender, Released
Travis Putnam, 33, a former Orange Glen Social Science teacher, plead guilty to two molestation charges involving two teen age boys. The sentence involves one year in jail and three years of probation as well as lifetime registration as a sex offender. Authorities confirmed Putnam’s actions had nothing to do with his employment as a teacher at Orange Glen High School. A group of residents have already expressed concerns about when Putnam will be released in 2020. They live on or near Echo Valley Lane in Escondido and fear Putnam will move back in with his mother who lives in that neighborhood.
A review of Putnam’s college credits and teaching credentials appear to reveal a very talented teacher with impressive credentials and training. Though the incidents to which he pleaded guilty were not associated with his teaching position or his school the registration as a sex offender will surely follow ihm and make it difficult for him to gain employment. He was terminated by the Escondido Union School District and his teacher’s credentials have been suspended for misconduct.
$300,000 The Potential Tab for Special Election in Carlsbad
Barbara Hamilton’s resignation from the Carlsbad City Council now requires the Carlsbad Council to either appoint a replacement or hold a special election to replace her. The city attorney’s office told the council a special election could cost anywhere from $7,500 to $300,000. Mayor Matt Hall said he’s optimistic the council can agree on an appointment and avoid the costs of a special election, as well as the delays.
An appointee would serve in the unexpired term through 2022.
Hamilton, elected last year to represent the city’s newly created District 1, announced earlier this month to the surprise of her council colleagues that she will resign because of family health issues. She offered no further details, except to say it was a difficult decision.
Almost any District 1 resident and registered voter is eligible for the seat. The district covers the city’s northwest quadrant and includes the Village and Barrio neighborhoods.

Their daughter, Sabrina, is also a welcome face at the cash register on weekends, however, due to school commitments at Cal State San Marcos we don’t see as much of her as we’d like. She inherited her dad’s famous smile and her mom’s famous beauty.

Beatlemania and the British Beat would eventually spread around the planet.
The Beatles set the world stage on its collective ears and soon other British imports continued to follow in their wake in increasing numbers, completely dominating the American music pop charts as never before: The Dave Clark Five, The Yardbirds, the Zombies, Gerry and the Pacemakers, Chad and Jeremy, and other British powerhouses. Within this constellation of new emerging British rock stars, the Beatles held center court as the most dynamic and the most popular the world had, heretofore, witnessed. On the cusp of immortality, and unprecedented success, they set new, seemingly impossible, standards for their contemporaries. For example, during their second U. S. Tour, they filled New York’s Shea Stadium with an astonishing 55,000 fans on August 15, 1965. It was the first time in human history that such a large outdoor stadium had ever been used for such a purpose. Three thousand miles away, there

Tinkley and Louis Robin, the Fab Four were successfully booked for their only San Diego concert appearance, formally slated for 8 p.m. Saturday, August 28, 1965, at Balboa Stadium.
But, what greatly greased the wheels for promoters Tinkley and Robin’s efforts and helped opened the door for them to succeed in bringing the Beatles to San Diego came from a most unlikely source: Mexico.
A little-known fact was that Beatles manager, Brian Epstein, had planned a Beatles concert in Mexico City, to take place at the Palacio de Los Deportes Stadium (Sports Palace Stadium) – but the plan was nixed by the Mexican government. Mexican officials believed the British rock group to be a bad influence on their youth – most of whom were already rabid Beatles fans. The official reason given by the Mexican government for the cancellation of any Beatles concert plans was on “security” grounds. In reality, Ernesto P. Uruchurtu, Head of the Federal District at the time, refused to grant Epstein’s request, stating to the Beatles manager that the rock ‘n’ roll group were a threat to the values of Mexican youth. According to Mexican writer, Felipe Morales Martinez, Mexico’s Federal District Head, Ernesto P. Uruchurtu, refused the Beatles concert plans for the stated reason: “Being a group of rock (music) at

Also, Jose Antonio Martinez, wrote in great detail of the backroom drama which took place back in 1965 and was published (more recently) in Mexico City’s Frente Magazine. The article included an exclusive interview with Paul McCartney in a ‘retrospection piece’ looking back at hidden elements and power-posturing behind the Mexican ban on England’s Fab Four. Writer, Martinez, was also host of a weekly radio program and co-creator of a documentary film titled, “Waiting for Los Bitles” (“Waiting for the Beatles”), which further investigated and uncovered official information not widely known, i.e. why the Beatles were banned in Mexico (stated above). Mexico’s loss was San Diego’s momentous gain.

Supporting Native Americans
The 52nd Native American Day was celebrated September 27, as a time to honor and remember the contributions of California’s tribal nations, to recognize their sovereignty and the tremendous challenges they have long faced, along with their remarkable resilience and achievements.
San Diego County, with 18 reservations, covering over 190 square miles, has more reservations than any other county in the United States – and 8 of these are within the 75th Assembly District. Tribal sovereignty is critically important in that we recognize Tribal Governments as sovereign nations separate from the United States government, with the authority to regulate their own laws and way of life. History has not been easy on our tribal neighbors as each has a vital history to tell.
One of these challenges was addressed in part by the federal Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), which was enacted in 1978 in response to the wholesale removal of Indian children from their parents, families and tribal communities. The act provided important rights and protections for Indian families, but more needed to be
done. With more ICWA appeals than in any other state, California has struggled to comply and properly implement ICWA.
This session, along with Assemblymember James C. Ramos (D – Highland), I introduced Assembly Bill 686, bi-partisan legislation that increases state compliance with ICWA by updating and clarifying existing law allowing tribes to conduct placement approvals, including home evaluations and background checks. AB 686 will also ensure that Indian tribes can fully participate in ICWA cases by allowing access to telephonic or other computerized or electronic remote access options during court proceedings. AB 686 is supported by a broad coalition of Tribal Governments around the state and other groups, including Juvenile Court Judges of California and the California Tribal Families Coalition. The bill passed both houses unanimously and is now awaiting the Governor’s signature. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

It’s been an on-going debate amongst my fellow Board members at SANDAG. Where should we spend our transportation dollars? For those in Downtown San Diego and Chula Vista their main focus was on public transportation. For many of the North and East County leaders, the focus was freeways and highways.
Last Friday, the SANDAG Board came together on a compromise that fits all the transportation needs in San Diego County. Throughout this process, I’ve asked for a balanced plan that addresses the transportation needs for all of San Diego County. Our new plan allocates dollars to new public transit projects, but also includes HOV lanes from the 78 and 52 freeways, as well as expanding Highway 67.
It’s taken much discussion, but we have finally reached a compromise that all of SANDAG’s Board could agree upon. There will be many more debates in the future about allocating the rest of the transportation dollars, but for now I’m excited about San Diego County’s
future!

Below is a list of old sayings and where they came from. However, sometimes it is impossible to say for certain how an old saying originated. Sometimes we can only give the most likely explanation.
In 1792, Burr was admitted to the bar of New York. As an attorney, Burr later entered politics and was twice-elected to the New York state legislature. He was appointed State Attorney General, then he was chosen as a U.S. Senator.
ACHILLES HEEL
In Greek mythology Thetis dipped her son Achilles in the mythical River Styx. Anyone who was immersed in the river became invulnerable. However, Thetis held Achilles by his heel. Since her hand covered this part of his body the water did not touch it and so it remained vulnerable. Achilles was eventually killed when Paris of Troy fired an arrow at him and it hit his heel. Like many old sayings in the English language this one comes from the Bible. In Genesis, Cain murdered his brother Abel. God asked Cain 'Where is your brother?'. Cain answered 'I don't know. Am I my brother's keeper?'. APPLE OF MY EYE

The Forgotten Man: Aaron Burr
If asked who the third man to hold the vice presidency of the United States was, few would know it was Aaron Burr who was noted for one historical event – a duel, killing U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton.
Hamilton prominently has taken his place in history as founder of what today is the Federal Reserve, the U.S. Mint – as such he gets his picture on the $10 bill. Conversely, Burr’s bio is found in very few history books, primarily because of their 1807 duel. Hamilton remains historically wellknown, especially since a recent Broadway musical “loosely” depicts his character.
A baker's dozen means thirteen. This old saying is said to come from the days when bakers were severely punished for baking underweight loaves. Some added a loaf to a batch of a dozen to be above suspicion. When hunting birds some people would beat about the bush to drive them out into the open. Other people would then catch the birds. 'I won't beat about the bush' came to mean 'I will go straight to the point without any delay'. ON YOUR BEAM ENDS

In the 17th century a biter was a con man. 'Talk about the biter being bitten' was originally a phrase about a con man being beaten at his own game.

In those days, the office of President was elected by the Senate. While in the Senate Burr ran for President against Thomas Jefferson, but lost by one vote, relegating him to the office of Vice President, where second-place finishers automatically landed. Burr blamed Hamilton for his defeat. The two men were pillars in New York social, political and business circles and had become bitter enemies. During the selection for president, Hamilton rallied several senators to vote against Burr – even a few who were enemies of Hamilton, but they hated Burr even more. Thomas Jefferson, who had his own rivals, was looked upon as “the lesser of two evils.” In business Burr was highly successful. He established the Bank of Manhattan, which continues today as JP MorganChase. Near the same time, Hamilton founded the competing Bank of New York, deepening their political and business rivalry even more.
Ironically, it’s their duel that caused Burr to be banished to historical obscurity. What caused the duel is a matter of conjecture. One of the reasons could be traced to Hamilton’s vicious rumors he spread in various newspaper columns.
BEAT ABOUT THE BUSH
On a ship the beams are horizontal timbers that stretch across the ship and support the decks. If you are on your beam-ends your ship is leaning at a dangerous angle. In other words, you are in a precarious situation.

Burr was a serving officer during the Revolutionary War under another controversial character: Gen. Benedict Arnold during the Quebec, Canada expedition. Burr distinguished himself in that battle earning a place on Gen. George Washington’s command staff. But, after only two weeks, Burr asked for a transfer back to the battlefield.
During the ensuing battle when the British landed on Manhattan, Burr saved an entire brigade from capture, including a young Alexander Hamilton. Evidently miffed because Burr had resigned from his staff, Washington did not commend Burr for his heroic actions on Manhattan. The snub by Washington led to an eventual estrangement between the two men. Nonetheless, Burr distinguished himself with a number of daring and heroic exploits during the Revolutionary War. In 1777, Washington “buried the hatchet” and promoted Burr to lieutenant colonel. He was given command of a regiment. During the harsh winter at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania Burr led a small unit guarding an isolated pass. He and his men drove back an attempted mutiny by troops who tried to escape the miserable Valley Forge winter.
In 1779, Burr had to leave the Army due to bad health, but he remained active when assigned by Washington to perform occasional intelligencegathering missions. During his days as a spy, Burr rallied a group of Yale students in New Haven, Conn., aiding a

Hamilton reportedly suggested to a newspaper columnist Burr was committing incest with his own daughter. Enraged, Vice President Burr challenged Treasury Secretary Hamilton to a duel in Weehawken, N.J. Dueling was illegal which caused them to cross the Hudson River. As a result, Hamilton was mortally wounded, dying a day later. Hamilton’s death destroyed Burr’s political and business career and put him into social disgrace. Years later, Burr traveled west to embark upon what was an alleged attempt to form a new country. He was charged with treason by the federal government, but later acquitted. Still, his reputation as a less-than honorable man persists despite his many deeds during the Revolutionary War. Burr spent the remainder of his life in relative obscurity practicing law in New York. He died in 1836. The many achievements of Aaron Burr have been forgotten except for that famous conflict between him and Hamilton. That event is about the only point of history students of today learn about Burr. It is simply referred to as “The Duel” and usually needs no further explanation. Some 30 years ago Aaron Burr’s life was loosely portrayed by author Gore Vidal in his historical novel, “Burr.” I recommend it.

Yesterday I got my permit to carry a concealed weapon.
So, today I went over to the local Gun shop to get a 9mm handgun for home/personal protection. When I was ready to pay for the pistol and ammo, the cashier said, "Strip down, facing me."

would continue to unfold, in spades, for the city of San Diego. San Diego’s ensuing, and hidden, internal fighting leading to the Beatles concert at Balboa Stadium would lead to one of the most colorful and captivating chapters in Beatlemania history.
Little did anyone know that San Diego would become the battleground of a vicious media war over the rights to promote the Beatles at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. This tooth-and-nail media in-fighting would prove to be a death-struggle of sorts and yet it would remain, largely, behind the scenes and curtained-off to the general public, and Beatles fans. Much of what happened in this media warfare remains largely unknown, even to this day.
The media combatants at the time involved popular San Diego radio stations KGB and KCBQ. The two rival radio stations viciously competed for the rights to officially promote the San Diego Beatles Concert, which eventually would lead to legal litigation against one another (KGB vs. KCBQ). During the onset, the Beatles’ concert promoters (Allen Tinkley and Louis Robin) had asked both rival radio stations to submit their best proposals with a submission dateline of June 10, 1965. KGB and KCBQ pulled out all the stops in their ensuing competition to win the (official) Beatles air-time rights and the honor of introducing them live, on stage, at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium, truly a most historic musical event for San Diego.
The ensuing “pitches” and various proposal ideas by both KGB and KCBQ made their way to promoters, Louis Robin and Allen Tinkley. Lee Bartell, KCBQ General Manager, created a fictional DJ character by the name of “Lord Tim of Liverpool,” (real name, Tim Hudson), who paraded as a fictional Englishman who claimed to be a personal friend of the Beatles. In addition, KCBQ promised promoters a full seven-week-long promotion in newspapers, Beatles gift give-a-ways, and press conferences. KGB’s Bill Drake upped the ante by offering Beatles’ promoters the moon, stating that KGB would not only offer carte blanche coverage in every conceivable fashion for the upcoming Beatles concert but, in summation, the promoters would, in essence, sit in the owner’s chair at KGB and drive the promotion scheme as they see fit. The offers from both competing radio stations were so enticing that promoters Robin and Tinkley offered a joint sponsorship by both
KGB and KCBQ. The stations, mutually, wanted no part of each other. Rivalry was too, acrimoniously, deeply planted.
Finally, on June 15, KGB Radio (which, incidentally, had higher ratings than KCBQ), was signed to officially promote and sponsor the Beatles San Diego Concert, on August 28, 1965, at Balboa Stadium. Nonetheless, KCBQ hung on with their “Lord Tim of Liverpool” publicity, grabbing radio listeners away from KGB, which was now the official sponsor of the Beatles upcoming concert. The ongoing feud was not about to go away quietly. KCBQ stayed on with their Lord Tim persona, which was stealing the thunder from KGB. And KCBQ’s Lord Tim was gaining momentum in fan popularity. Lord Tim was the full irresistible package: he was young, good looking, spoke in an English accent and, for good measure, sported bell-bottom pants and Beatles haircut. All this drove the Beatles-appointed radio sponsor, KGB, to have kittens. The on-air feud heightened to a climax when KCBQ Radio managed to obtain full permission from the Beatles tour management to allow Lord Tim to travel with the English megastars. This KCBQ major coup against KGB was almost an outright death blow between the competing media, in favor of KCBQ, which now had inner-access to personal interviews with the Beatles, all of which would be aired, exclusively, on KCBQ airwaves. Adding to ticket-sales confusion, KCBQ publicized their own radio station phone number as a source to purchase Beatles concert tickets. This caused confusing information for KGB, the official concert sponsor, and also for radio listeners who wished to purchase tickets. All these proceedings culminated in KGB filing a lawsuit against rival radio station, KCBQ. Despite this behind-the-scenes drama, San Diego’s one-and-only Beatles concert commenced at San Diego’s Balboa Stadium. Contradicting ticket information and bitter in-fighting between two warring radio stations created an element of confusion which hurt public ticket sales in the process. Also, the last-minute addition of San Diego to the Beatles North American Tour Date Schedule gave promoters a shorter period of time to promote the event. San Diego’s only Beatles concert attendance could have proven better without the KGB-KCBQ media drama. Out of 27,041 tickets, only about 17, 013 were sold, leaving an estimated 10,000 empty seats. Tickets were priced at $3.50, $4.50, and $5.50. Some fence-hoppers were successful in seeing the concert free.
Nevertheless, the Beatles were already superstars and miraculously still heading to added, stratospheric heights of fame. (When the Rolling Stones first played San Diego in the latter part of 1964, several months before the Beatles, the Rolling Stones concert was at the much smaller Balboa Park Bowl, and only sold a few hundred tickets at

The upper class in Spain had paler skin than most of the population as their ancestors had not inter-married with the Arabs. As they had pale skin the 'blue' blood running through their veins was more visible. (Of course, all blood is red but it sometimes looks blue when running through veins). When the Beatles arrived for their only San Diego concert in 1965, they brought along their celebrated wit. The San Diego press conference was turned into a worldwide stage, with great expectations for another rousing session of jocular exchanges as was customary in past Beatles interviews. San Diego and the Beatles did not disappoint.
Over 100 journalists and reporters showed up on August 28, 1965, for a Beatles pre-concert press conference. The four mop-tops stole the show with spontaneous wit and clever retorts. Even other celebrities, such as singing sensation, Joan Baez, dared not miss a Beatles

The one theme I hear almost daily is “how fast time is going.” I wonder if it is a phenomena of our age or whether people of every age experienced the same thing. There is no doubt that days come and go and have done so since recorded history. We have already moved into the autumn season, the third phase of the year. It is really one of best seasons, which we don’t want to miss. The geese are flying South, the pumpkins are ripening, the apples need picking, the squirrels are gathering nuts for the winter, the trees are starting to shed their leaves, and the sky seems brighter and clearer. It is harvest time, a magical time of the year. We human beings often refer to life being in the autumn season, when the hair is turning gray, we need glasses and hearing-aids, we watch our steps to keep from falling, and
Jeremiah, the prophet, puts things in perspective in chapter 8:20 when he says, “Harvest has passed, summer has ended, but we have not been saved.” What does he mean by being saved? There are various ways to look at it. I share a few with you. We can be saved from things such as sickness, tragedy, loss, despair, rejection, and many other terrible problems. It is good to harvest these blessings this month. And we could be saved for some things such as service to others, acts of kindness, sharing, being generous by giving, loving, forgiving, and growing in a strong spiritual life. We can harvest these opportunities this autumn.
Autumn is not a time which is fleeting, but rather a time of fulfillment. Pastor Huls

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones San Marcos Creek Project Moves Forward
On Sept. 24, the San Marcos City Council voted to approve a notice to award for Sema Construction to serve as the primary construction contractor for the San Marcos Creek Project. This important infrastructure project will benefit our City in the following ways: • Raised roadway and new bridges over the San Marcos creek along Bent Avenue and Via Vera Cruz to reduce flooding and
enhance safety • Widened Discovery Street to four lanes with a bike lane on the south side • Additional sidewalks and bike facilities • New community park with spaces and trails for recreation and relaxation • Restoration and preservation of 1.5 miles of creek habitat Preliminary construction will begin in late 2019. Active construction is tentatively planned to start in early 2020 and is expected to take up to two years to complete. Housing Continued- not everyone will be happy.
So, if you’ve been following the past few weeks, I hope you can now see that housing is one of those community challenges that has no good answer. Whatever decision is made, it will have an impact and somebody probably won’t like it. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be engaged. This is “our” community and so its future rests in our hands. I would encourage you to follow what is going on and most importantly give your elected leaders your feedback. It really does help. I would like to end this week not on a challenge. Rather, I want to share with you that I’ve been talking with a number of groups this week who have been doing some wonderful things. When people ask me what it is like to be Mayor, I often say, I feel like all I had to do was open the barn door. We have so many volunteers doing so many things to improve the city I’m constantly awed by it. Finally, I attended the city employee anniversary breakfast. you went on a journey you could hire a horse to take you from one town to another and travel using a relay of horses. However, he would not let customers choose which horse they wanted to ride. Instead, they had to ride whichever horse was nearest the stable entrance. Music critic, Richie Unterberger, wrote in All Music that the Beatles are: “The greatest and most influential act of the rock era, and introduced more innovations into popular music than any other rock band of the 20th century.”
In Rolling Stone Magazine’s “Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll,” the editors defined the Beatles’ influence thusly: “The impact of the Beatles – not only on rock & roll but on all of Western culture – is simply incalculable. Smart, idealistic, playful, irreverent, eclectic. They proved that rock & roll could embrace a limitless variety of harmonies, structures, and sounds.” In the end, the Beatles meant different things to different people. Brian Wilson of the immortal Beach Boys band said, “There’s no outdoing the Beatles.” Comedy legend, Jerry Seinfeld, opined, “The Beatles created something that never trailed off. A middle-aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience.

Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a facelift, liposuction, and a tummy tuck. She even had someone come in and change her hair
