Many footsteps will, no doubt, scurry to the computer to quickly bring up a visual geographical map of California and our eastern neighbor state of Nevada.

The seemingly ‘shocking impossibility’ becomes reality as cartographers clearly show how the long narrow state of California bends with its central/southern region within the shape of a “Lazy “L” which protrudes farther east than northern California towns and cities!

As such, Reno, Nevada is clearly farther west than many Southern California coastal cities!

There are too many examples to cite here, but, as a sampling: Reno sits farther west than not only Southern California’s surfing icons such as San Diego, but Reno is also farther west than Los Angeles, and -- even farther west than many central California coastal cities such as Santa Barbara!

In technical parlance, on the geographical grid, Los Angeles runs along the longitude of 118 degrees and 14 minutes west, while Reno, Nevada runs along the longitude of 119 degrees and 49 minutes farther west!

I mowed the lawn today, and after doing so I sat down and had a couple nice cold beers. The day was really quite beautiful, and the brew facilitated some deep thinking on various topics.

Finally I thought about an age old question: Is giving birth more painful than getting kicked in the groin?

Women always maintain that giving birth is way more painful than a guy getting kicked in the groin.

Well, after another beer, and some heavy deductive thinking, I have come up with the answer to that question. Getting kicked in the groin is more painful than having a baby; and here is the reason for my conclusion.

New York Harbor, 1885. Only 20 years after the Civil War. New York was the epicenter of the world.

Bubs McFee had traveled all the way from Maryland to be here, hoping to get hired as part of the auxiliary metal-working crew that would help assemble the world’s most famous statue.

Competition was stiff. Everyone wanted this job.

A big-bellied foreman surveyed the long line of hopeful young laborers, sizing them up like an infantry. When the foreman’s eyes landed on Bubs he laughed.

“God sakes, son,” said the foreman.

“You don’t look old enough to shave.

You sure you’re in the right place?”

“Yes, sir.”

The other applicants laughed.

The foreman looked at his clipboard.

“Bubs, huh? That your real name?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Well, Bubs, you have any idea how many beamwalkers die each year on my clock? Have you ever laid a rivet in your life? Can you even lift a hammer with that puny arm you got?”

“Yes, sir.”

The foreman shook his head. “You’re naturally gabby, aren't you?”

Bubs took the Fifth.

The foreman squinted and leaned in.

“Well, I think you’re a liar. I don’t think you’ve ever worked with iron in your life. I don’t think you’d know a rivet from your own butt.”

The foreman held up a hammer. “You want this job, I’m gonna need a little proof, kid.”

In a few moments a full-scale competition was underway to separate the wheat from the chaff. A gaggle of competing ironworking applicants crowded beneath a tall unfinished steel skeleton, ready to prove themselves.

Fatal Crash in Escondido Leaves 1 dead, 3 Injured

An Escondido man is dead and three others are hospitalized following a car crash last Wednesday night.

The fatal crash happened around 11:43 p.m. on Valley Parkway, just south of Claudan Road.

According to California Highway Patrol, a 17-year-old boy from Escondido was driving a 2000 Honda Prelude and was traveling with four passengers, another 17year-old boy, two 18-year-old boys, and a 20-year-old man.

For reasons that are still under investigation, the driver veered his car to the right and left the road.

The Honda collided with a raised curb, light pole, and tree.

The California Highway Patrol, the Escondido Police Department, and the Escondido Fire/Paramedics responded to the scene.

Unfortunately, the 20-year-old man was pronounced deceased when the authorities arrived.

The 17-year-old driver and the other two passengers suffered major injuries and were taken to Palomar Medical Center.

The last passenger suffered major injuries and was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

CHPS says alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the fatal crash.

The southbound lane of Valley Parkway was affected from the time of the collision until about 2:30 a.m. All findings are preliminary, and the crash is still under investigation.

Outdoor dining will soon be permanent on Escondido’s Grand Avenue as a complete makeover is set to begin in January of next year.

Outdoor dining started after the pandemic seriously affected downtown Escondido restaurants. They were not allowed to have indoor dining so dining al fresco become the new way of life.

The makeover includes narrowing of downtown streets, widening sidewalks and add parkinG.

It’s a $15 million plan to enhance Escondido’s historic Grand Avenue corridor by slowing traffic, widening sidewalks, expanding space for outdoor and it all began thanks to some angry business owners who took exception to the city planning to charge for downtown parking.

They turned out en masse and were

like I would an 8 year-old girl as she had picked up and either put away in drawers or hung up in the closet clothes that had either been piled on the bed or on the floor.

The master bedroom looked rather nice. Brand new paint job and the room was tidy.

Mary used to be a tidy homemaker.

Not so much anymore. So I praise her whenever she does something right and pleases "the daddy."

Man About Town

Mark MThe Mary Chronicles: In what is becoming a Friday night ritual I took Mary out for dinner last Friday.

Excellent Chinese food.

I now hold Mary's hand as we walk from the car to the front door, and, after dinner, from the front door to the car. I hold her hand so as to increase her sense of balance. But I also do it to increase my sense of balance. Neither one of us want to fall and break a hip.

We both are beginning to walk like and look like old people.

I wonder why that is?

Mary is slowly making some progress. She still has her memory issues but yesterday I praised her

Today I praised her again, this time for finishing her plate. I no longer order entrees for her. She would pick at her food and we'd wind up taking it home. A waste of money and, ultimately, food . . as all too often the leftovers never got eaten.

She still has a small appetite but now when she reaches for more food I say,"no, Mary, not until you finish what you have on your plate.

You can have all you want to eat but you have to finish what's on your plate first."

Again, I sometimes talk to her like she's an 8 year-old but sometimes that's how you have to talk to folks who have dementia.

Mary is quite lucid and can carry on a conversation, sometimes making me laugh with her stories about Scotland and when the kids were growing up. But five minutes later she won't remember having told me the stories.

The Grand Avenue Vision Plan, a three-phase project will soon break ground after years of meetings, planning and discussion.

The first phase of the project, which will cost $2.5 million, was funded through a $1.44 million grant from the San Diego Association of Governments, or SANDAG, and $1.1 million in matching funds from the city, said Julie Procopio, Escondido city engineer.

Work was originally slated to begin this fall, but a survey of local businesses showed a preference for waiting until after the holiday season, so construction is now anticipated to start in January and take about three months.

The work will include narrowing Grand Avenue to one lane in each direction from Escondido Boulevard to Juniper Street, widening the sidewalk on the north side of Grand from Broadway to Maple, adding diagonal parking to create a net total of 45 more parking spaces, installing new light fixtures and overhead string lighting, and new fencing around outdoor dining spaces, according to Escondido City Engineer Julie Procopio said.\of the area,” she said.

She sometimes will fail to recognize people she's known for years.

Fortunately, she still remembers me . . and our son, Kenny. Our granddaughter she often refers to as "the wee lassie."

Claudia, our caregiver and housekeeper, Mary always refers to as "the lassie." She doesn't remember Claudia's name.

Today she told me, "there's someone in the garage."

"Who?," I ask.

"Evelyn," she says.

"No, Evelyn's in Oklahoma for a high school reunion. Who's in the garage?"

"Oh, you know, that lassie that comes around all the time.' (It was Claudia, in the garage, washing and drying clothes.)

•••• The Weight of Responsibility

While Evelyn is in Oklahoma, attending a high school reunion, I have been assigned even more responsibility in my day to day life.

In addition to producing a weekly news magazine that serves North San Diego County, as well as looking after my ex-wife, Mary, buying groceries, co-ordinatng with our other caregiver and housekeeper, Claudia, and meeting with clients, I now have added duties.

I have become caretaker to a couple of pups. (They're both about 11 years old and getting a lot of grey in their muzzles and faces . . but, to me, they'll always be . . "the pups.)

Every morning I head over to the Madison Mansion, there to be greeted by furious wagging of tails and pleading eyes . . our two pups, Trixie and Cindi, always love to see their daddy.

Cindy, the little rascal, even talks to me. A low, pleading, guttural sound . . . that always tickles me and usually makes me burst out in laughter.

Trixie does not talk to me.

She could learn from Cindy.

In 1990, China’s official newspaper, the “People’s Daily” reported Bosco’s tenure, of which he served until his death in 1994.

A statue of the four-legged Honorary Mayor, Bosco Ramos, was suitably erected in front of the town Post Office in 2008.

Truly an international star and symbol, the statue of the black Labrador & Rottweiler mix dog was designed by the celebrated Russian sculptor, Lena Toritch.

To this day, that California statue continues to draw many admirers from around the world!

I then open and serve some delicious cat food to the two cats, Farfle (whom Evelyn insists on calling Precious), and Yum-Yum. Farfle digs right in and consumes her breakfast. Yum-Yum yawns and allows as how she'll eat her breakfast when she is damn good and ready.

FASCINATING BACKSTORY. Understandably, it is impossible to credit the invention of the internet to a single person simply because there were dozens of independent pioneering scientists, programmers, and engineers who (each developed) new technologies.

Unlike banks which failed across America, San Francisco was most unique: during the height of the Great Depression San Francisco undertook two great civil engineering projects, simultaneously: constructing the San FranciscoOakland Bay Bridge, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Both were completed in 1936 and 1937, respectively.

Such infrastructure planning insulated San Francisco’s financial banking district.

It was also during this tumultuous economic period which crippled most of America, that San Francisco embarked in other projects to keep people employed: such as when the island of Alcatraz began its service as a maximum security prison (housing such notorious inmates as Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud (the legendary “Birdman of Alcatraz”) who was immortalized in books and Hollywood movies).

San Francisco later celebrated and regained international prominence with its World’s Fair, the Golden Gate International Exposition (1939-1940), and creating Treasure Island in the middle of the bay.

New Taxes Down the Road

California has the highest gasoline prices in the country, and at 51.1 cents per gallon, our gasoline tax is also the highest. Keep in mind we have the country’s worst poverty rate, with many living just barely above the poverty level, and thousands have real problems just making ends meet.

Making matters worse, SB 339 has been signed into law by the Governor. It pilots implementation of a “Road Usage Charge” (RUC), to eventually charge motorists a "per mile driven" tax. We already pay over twice what other Americans pay for fuel and vehicle maintenance – SB 339 adds to the burden. Remember, the new RUC will be on top of the existing gas tax, and there’s no indication the gas tax will be reduced as the RUC is implemented.

The RUC would replace declining gas tax revenues as motorists shift to Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEVs).

But there’s a real problem. ZEV owners have a mean annual income of nearly $200,000/year, 81% are college educated and 81% are homeowners. For the most part, these are not people making twohour commutes to get to work.

Median and low-income commuters are rarely ZEV owners, nor are they

likely to be anytime soon. SB 339 unfairly shifts the cost of maintaining roads to lower-income drivers and rural communities while giving wealthier ZEV owners what amounts to a ‘free ride.’

Gas taxes are constitutionally protected; funds cannot be diverted for non-transportation purposes. No such protections exist for RUC revenues, and history shows funds without constitutional protections can easily be diverted to other uses.

Another problem – local jurisdictions, including San Diego County, are considering implementing their own RUC, so the state’s travel tax would be in addition to the county’s travel tax, on top of the gas tax.

California’s lower-income drivers should not bear the burden of maintaining our state’s highways.

Communities Are Living in Fear

There is fear among communities throughout San Diego County.

Whether you live in rural North County, rural East County, or in any of the region’s 18 cities, your neighborhood could be uprooted by the State of California’s placement of a Sexually Violent Predator (SVP).

It’s time we address this and, once and for all, stop this! San Diegans should not live in fear of knowing a Sexually Violent Predator could be placed to live in their neighborhoods.

On October 5th, I will be asking my colleagues at the Board of Supervisors to oppose any further placements of Sexually Violent Predators in San Diego County until local jurisdictions get to fully participate in the placement process, including full veto authority. The State of California and Liberty Healthcare should not be in-charge of determining where these convicted predators should go, instead the community should have the say.

There are 1,000 diagnosed Sexually Violent Predators in California, and, according to Liberty Healthcare, 51 have been placed in neighborhoods through the Conditional Release program. In San Diego County,

there are five SVPs placed in neighborhoods throughout the region, and three more are awaiting placement hearings. An SVP is an individual who has been convicted of a sexually violent offense against one or more victims and who has a diagnosed mental disorder that makes the person a danger to the health and safety of others.

The SVPs placed or proposed to be placed in the San Diego Region have committed crimes that include lewd acts upon children under 14 (as young as four years old), child molestation, forcible rape, and forcible sodomy, among others. Many of these were repeat crimes over the course of years.

It breaks my heart to read the stories about these unspeakable crimes and these people should not be allowed back in our neighborhoods. It’s time we act, it’s time we say no to SVP’s in our neighborhoods.

Q: I ordered a refrigerator from Sears three months ago. The appliance was delayed multiple times.

Last month, I decided to cancel the order. I've had many phone calls with Sears since then, and I've been hung up on multiple times. Through the online chat feature, I never get anyone outside of a bot.

I have yet to be refunded the $1,641 I am owed. Unfortunately, I used my debit card instead of a credit card. Can you help me get a refund?

-- Greg Johnson, Blackwood, N.J. A: Sears should have delivered your refrigerator on time -- and if it couldn't, it should have refunded your purchase promptly.

You're right, using a debit card certainly complicates things. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, which protects credit card customers, you have the right to dispute a charge when a merchant doesn't do what it promises. If you make a purchase using a debit card, the money is gone.

Now, don't get me wrong. I'm no fan of credit cards. They're loaded with "gotcha" fees and fine print, and I believe they also deepen the divide between the "haves" and "have-nots." Credit card debt is a terrible burden that financially hobbles large swaths of the population.

But at least you have some legal protection when you're paying with a card. So next time, as much as it pains me to recommend it, consider using your credit card for a major purchase.

Your first step to retrieving your money is sending a brief, polite appeal to an executive at Sears. I list the names, numbers and email addresses of the <a href="https://www.elliott.org/company-contacts/sears/">Sears customer service managers</a> on my nonprofit consumer advocacy site, Elliott.org.

I've reviewed the paper trail between you and Sears. (By the way, good job on keeping your records). It looks like you were getting strung along. Here's how it should have worked: You ask for a refund and then they return your money quickly. Easy, right? Now, I understand that there are some accounting systems that must ensure the right refund goes to the right customer. But three months?

Come on.

I connected you with some higherlevel contacts at Sears. You reached out to them with a brief, polite email. I advised you to wait for the system to work. Fortunately, it did.

A few weeks after you contacted me, Sears finally credited you with $1,641, as promised. It did not offer a reason for the delay.

Q: My family and I canceled our airline tickets last year because of COVID-19. Singapore Airlines promised to refund the tickets but said it would take 16 weeks. I filed a credit card dispute with Citibank.

Citibank issued a temporary credit for the tickets. A month later Singapore Airlines refunded one of the five tickets. But then, in October, Citibank closed the claim and charged us again for all the tickets.

Our credit card company said Singapore Airlines initiated a chargeback in September, and we lost the claim. Singapore said they "allowed the chargeback back" for the other four tickets in summer and therefore they won't refund the money again, but the credit card company said it's Singapore Airlines who we need to deal with.

Can you help us? -- Rebecca Engelmann, White Plains, NY A: If Singapore Airlines promised you a refund, you should have received one. But this case looks a little upside-down. Let me explain.

Normally, you would not get a refund for tickets you canceled during the pandemic. Airlines are only required to refund tickets when they cancel. Otherwise, you get an expiring ticket credit.

I don't agree with that, by the way.

I think if the government warns you against traveling, or if there's no way you can safely or legally travel somewhere, then you should also get a refund. But that's a discussion for another time, and it's something legislators and consumer advocates are arguing about at the moment.

Anyway, it looks like you complicated things by filing a credit card dispute. I'm not entirely sure why you tried to claw your money back after Singapore Airlines promised you a refund. A credit card dispute is a nuclear option. Under the Fair Credit Billing Act, the law that protects you from fraudulent purchases, and you typically have 90 days to dispute a purchase. After that, your next stop would be small claims court.

I'm not sure why Citibank allowed you to file a credit card dispute.

Someone from Citi should have advised you to wait for Singapore to make good on its promise. But even so, a written promise to refund the money is like a debit memo. If you show it to your credit card issuer, it's an almost automatic refund -- unless things get as mixed up as they did in this case.

‘The Catcher Who Was a Spy’

When baseball greats Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig went on tour in 1934 in baseball-crazy Japan, some in the U.S. sporting world wondered why Moe Berg, a third-rate catcher was included on the team. Although he played with five major-league teams from 1923 to 1939, Berg was considered mediocre, but he was regarded as the brainiest ballplayer of all New York Yankee’ manager Casey Stengel once said: "He (Berg) is the strangest man ever to play baseball.”

Berg was a U.S. spy working undercover with the Office of Strategic Services, forerunner of the CIA. Berg spoke 15 languages, including Japanese. And he had two loves: baseball and spying. In Tokyo, garbed in a kimono, Berg took flowers to the daughter of an American diplomat being treated in St. Luke's Hospital … the tallest building in the Japanese capital.

He never delivered those flowers.

Instead, Berg ascended to the hospital roof and filmed key features the harbor in Tokyo Bay, military installations, and railway yards. Eight years later, U.S. Army Air Corps Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle studied Berg's films in planning his spectacular raid over Tokyo in 1942.

During his youth, Berg’s father disapproved of his baseball career and never once watched his son play. In high school. Berg learned Latin, Greek and French. As an adult, he read at least 10 newspapers every day.

Berg was undoubtedly the most education ballplayer ever to play major league baseball. To describe Berg as being smart would be an understatement. He graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University, having added Spanish, Italian, German and Sanskrit to his linguistic quiver. During further studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, and later Columbia Law School, he picked up Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Arabic, Portuguese and Hungarian … 15 languages in all, plus some regional dialects

He reported back that Marshall Tito's forces were widely supported by the people and Winston Churchill ordered all-out support for the Yugoslav underground fighter. At the age of 41, the parachute jump undoubtedly was a challenge, but there would be more to come in that same year of 1942.

Berg penetrated German-held Norway, met with members of the underground and located a secret heavy-water plant, which was part of the Nazis' effort to build an atomic bomb. His information guided the Royal Air Force in a bombing raid over Norway, which destroyed the heavy water plant targeted by Berg.

There still remained the question of how far had the Nazis progressed in the race to build the first Atomic bomb.

The problem was: “…if the Nazis were successful at building the bomb they would win the war.” Berg (under the code name "Remus") was sent to Switzerland to attend a conference where leading German physicist Werner Heisenberg, who was a Nobel Laureate, was lecturing. Berg was to determine if the Nazis were close to building an A-bomb. Berg managed to slip past the SS guards at the auditorium posing as a Swiss graduate student.

In his pocket Berge carried a pistol and a cyanide pill.

If the German scientist indicated the Nazis were close to building an atomic weapon, Berg was ordered to shoot him, and then swallow the cyanide pill.

Berg was sitting in the front row of the assembled scientists. He quickly determined the Germans were nowhere near their goal, so after complimenting Heisenberg on his speech, Berg walked with the German back to his hotel as they talked casually about the lecture.

After the War it was determined by the OSS that Heisenberg, a Jew, had somehow blocked the Nazis from developing an atomic weapon.

Moe Berg's report was distributed to President Franklin Roosevelt, Britain's Prime Minister Winston Churchill and other key figures in the “Manhattan Project” working to develop the Atomic Bomb. Roosevelt told OSS director Gen. “Wild Bill” Donovan: "Give my regards to the catcher.”

Most of Germany's leading physicists had been Jewish and had fled the Nazis mainly to Britain and the United States.

After the war, Berg was awarded the Medal of Freedom, America's highest honor for a civilian during wartime, but Berg refused to accept it, because he couldn't tell people about his exploits.

After his death on May 29, 1972, Berg’s sister accepted the medal, which now is displayed in the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown, N.Y. This little-known World War II story has been made into a movie, “The Catcher Was a Spy,” starring Paul Rudd, which is available on Netflx and Prime

The OSS quickly determined Berg to be the best of candidates for being a spy. During World War II, Moe was parachuted into Yugoslavia to assess the value to the war effort of the two groups of partisans there.

This was a tall order. Five rivets in three minutes? Even your average veteran riveter could only install one rivet per minute. But then, Bubs was not average.

The foreman wound a stopwatch.

Bubs loosened his shoulders and took deep breaths. He placed the tongs and hammer into his toolbelt then glanced 50 feet upward at his “feeder,” a man cooking red-hot rivets over coals.

I find, too, even the teachings of Jesus cover investing. There is the story of a land owner, who gives sums of money to his workers to invest.

Normally, when I write this column, I write about what is the hot topic of the day or week. I try to share my thoughts on that week’s issue with all of you. I think it is important for you to know what occupies not just my time but the time of the entire city council. And what we are doing about it, and how we are thinking.

This week, I feel like every meeting I’ve had was about housing. So let me get the obvious out of the way – there isn’t enough, it’s expensive, and the price is going up faster than wages. We are working very hard to find ways to get our residents into homes. You would think it would be easy to find builders to build homes but it isn’t.

Restrictions designed to protect us, and costs make it more and more difficult. Of all the challenges of governance this is one of the biggest.

That said, we are working on some solutions that will help but not solve the problem. And I don’t have the perfect answer, but I want you to know that we are aware of the issue and we are not going to give up.

The news of Escondido doina a “redo” of Grand Avenue which, among other things, will provide for wider sidewalks and more outdoor dining, promises to generat a whole new image of downown Escondido as a “destination.”

We popped in for breakfast last Sunday at Charlies in Escondido, around 10am.

The joint was packed! And the serving staff were running from table to table to see that patrons were served ASAP. We had a small wait but we totally understood how busy they were and they would take good care of us - as they always do. We had a delightful breakfast and marveled at what a well trained and disciplined staff Charlie’s has. Well done!

This week is the fifty-sixth anniversary of our wedding. One of our customers suggested that it was unusual for a couple to be in business together after all those years “How is that unusual”, I asked, “we go to work every day just like everyone else.”

She replied “yes, but most people don’t do it at your age”. It dawned on me that she had a point. We open the shop at 9:00 am six days a week, are active members of the San Marcos, Vista and Carlsbad Chambers of Commerce, the Business Builders Network, San Marcos Lions Club and stay connected through local social media.

Our activities are really not that unusual for younger people who live and work in our community and we don’t feel any different than we ever did. But more and more lately we have started to realize that we might

Concerning your article “I Miss the America I Grew Up In”, you seem to allow your hatred for the Democrats cloud the article.

I guess this is ok since it is a conservative paper though opinion pieces should be marked as such.

Please let me make some rebuttal

In thinking about our present condition it suddenly came to me that may indeed have become valuable, promotable commodities and never realized it. Nome may well be the oldest female practicing Computer Tech in California, the United States perhaps the World. That must be worth something. There are tons of old geezers like me running business well into their eighties but Nome is unique.

How did she get so good at what she does?

I first met her in 1964. She was a very smart, very pretty twenty two year whose job was setting up and running two automated stripper/terminating machines at Belden Corporation in Indiana. We got married in 1965 and by 1969 had relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where Nome worked for Westinghouse crafting prototype control systems for the Mark 48 torpedo. We moved to Bloomington, Minnesota in 1972 where she bonded integrated circuits under a microscope at Control Data Corp’s Research and Development lab. By 1977 In Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario Canada, her job was using magnets to set up the geometry on CRTs at Volker Craig. By 1979 Nome was doing production planning at FMC Corp in Santa Clara. In 1990 it was production scheduling at

points. One way you let your bias showed was when you talked about how President Ford new funding bill for allowing South Vietnam RVN to come to America was killed by 1 vote by then Senator Joe Biden.

So I assume you are saying that it failed with a 50-50 vote and if Joe Biden had voted for it instead of against it, it would have passed. If so, that is not completely true because anyone of the 50 people who voted against it could have voted for it and it would have passed. So it wasn't Biden vote that killed it. Or maybe it was attempted to pass via a unanimous vote so there would be no debate on the subject. And a unanimous vote requires that no-one objects and Biden objected. It is common for a member of congress to object to a unanimous vote because they believe there should be a debate on the subject or there were other objectionable items in the same bill.

You should have been clearer on how Biden's 1 vote killed it.

Another way you let your bias showed was when you talked about the 2008 Veterans' benefits Enhancement Act and how it was Speaker Nancy Pelosi who failed to get it pass because she did not get all 230 House Democrats to vote for it when Rep. Darryl Issa gathered 60 Republican votes to allow it to pass without debate and amendments. Was it Pelosi who failed or was Issa because he did not gather more than 60 Republican votes?

WILLIAM “BILL” SCHRAMM 01.15.1947 – 08.31.2021

William “Bill” Schramm passed away on August 31, 2021 at the age of 74 after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill spent his final months in his beloved home on Oregon’s Applegate River surrounded by loved ones who promise to continue his legacy of service above self.

Bill devoted his entire life to helping make other people’s lives better. After graduating with a Master’s in Education with an emphasis in Community Leadership and serving six years in the National Guard, Bill began his professional career with the YMCA in California where he

worked as a Director for 13 years.

In 1982 he began his cherished role as Community Services Director for the City of San Marcos in Southern California, and stayed there until his retirement in 2006.

During those 24 years, Bill blended his love of nature and community to enhance the City of San Marcos with the development of parks, recreation facilities, nature trails and more.

Beyond his career, Bill spent his life in volunteer leadership positions for multiple service organizations including President of Rotary, Y’s Men and Meals on Wheels.

After retiring, Bill and his wife Sandy built their dream home in Southern Oregon where his dedication to the community continued, most recently serving as President of the Caveman Kiwanis in Grants Pass, Oregon.

Bill’s good-hearted nature and quirky humor was enjoyed by everyone he met. Always up for playing event emcee, creating party games, hosting poker night, and telling embellished stories, Bill’s presence made a positive impact everywhere he went. Bill was kind to the core, making time for everyone he met and ensuring they felt welcomed, heard and had someone on their side.

Life’s simple pleasures brought the greatest joy to Bill. He loved spending time outdoors, particularly Yosemite and river fishing, pulling weeds, playing cribbage, watching

the 49ers with his son, reading, listening to John Denver, and above all else, being with his family. A fiercely devoted husband and father who exemplified unconditional love, Bill was truly the very best.

He poured a lifetime of love, encouragement and energy into his family to ensure they had endless opportunities for education and new experiences, two things he greatly valued.

Bill leaves behind his wife Sandy (Schramm) of 39 years, three children: Chris, Teri (husband Danny) and Steven (wife Heather), and six grandchildren: Jacob, Jayden, Clementine, Tucker, Poppy and Brody. His family promises to carry-on Bill’s “life’s simple rules to live by”: Style.

with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth.

Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day.

The bull started to service the cows within two days, all my cows! He even broke through the fence and bred with all of my neighbor's cows!

He's like a machine! I don't know what was in the pills the Vet gave him ... but they kind of taste like peppermint.
