We’ve seen a lot, done a lot, and learned a lot over these past 20 years.

The years, as usual, have passed all too quickly. It seems like just yesterday we acquired The San Marcos News Reporter and rechristened it as The Paper.

It started with a phone call from the late John Smylie, a practicing attorney who specialized in probate and estate law.

I had gotten to know John as he served as a member of my board of directors for a non-profit organization known as Los Caballeros de Av entura (The Gentlemen of Adventure) which I had founded as a result of a fatal drive-by shooting of five-year-old Ricky Cardenas in Escondido. Ricky was the second drive-by shooting I had learned of.

The first one I shook my head and said, “someone should do something about this.” And then I went on with my life. When Ricky was killed I decided I was that someone who had to do something.

Los Caballeros de Aventura was formed with the premise that if we gave Latino kids (primarily) something to do, to discover and enjoy life, they’d be so busy they had neither the time no inclination to join gangs or otherwise get into trouble.

My plan was to have adult volunteers take them hiking the first week of the month, take them flying real airplanes the second week of the month, go to the beach the third week of the month, and to the mountains or some other event on the fourth week of the month. I took my idea to John Smylie and he

enthusiastically jumped on board, did all the legal work to set us up as a legal corporation, helped me recruit other board members who would and could contribute to the cause.

Thanks to John Smylie, my board of directors, and dozens of adult volunteers we recruited a huge amount of kids to join Caballeros.

only did she enjoy working with the kids but the kids worshiped her.

From the start Los Caballeros was a brilliant success! The kids loved the adventures, the adult volunteers fell in love with the kids, the school system supported us . . . and we got to know the families of the kids and became life-long friends - friendships that we treasure to this day.

I also found that I could make her laugh. Often. And we seemed to laugh a lot - both when on adventures with Los Caballeros and at times when we were alone.

One of those volunteers that helped at the beginning and all through the next six years was an attractive, wise beyond her years, lady by the name of Evelyn Madison. I recruited her initially as a driver/volunteer and she soon became a very active member of the group.

I found I was beginning to worship her as well.

She had also agreed to help me out in a new adventure which, thanks to John Smylie, I was about to begin.

Which brings us back to the phone call from John.

“How’d you like to get back into the media?” he asked.

“Don’t know. What do you have in mind?”

“Well,” John said, “I have a client, Bill Willoughby, who owns a small weekly newspaper called the San Marcos News Reporter. Bill had a stroke and the paper has gone dark for about six weeks. If you were interested in acquiring it, we could probably make it happen.”

I looked into it, made a few phone calls, talked to some people, and decided to go for it.

One of the people I talked to was the editor and publisher of The Coast News, Jim Kydd. I’ll never forget how kind Jim was to me, sharing information about the business, how to proceed, what to do, Cafeteria Museum in New Jersey.

Playcation - is best described in three words: Welcome to Disney.

Naycation - is when you visit the best horse stables in Kentucky.

Mywaycation - is when you visit the Frank Sinatra Museum.

Upupandawaycation - is visiting the annual hot air balloon festival in New Mexico.

BillyRaycation - is when you travel anywhere you need quality sun glasses.

Todaycation - is when you go to New York and stand outside NBC studios while they film the Today Show.

Leication - is when you travel to Hawaii.

Baycation - is when you travel to your favorite bay.

Daycation - is traveling to visit family but still being able to get home the same night. Most families call this Thanksgiving.

Faywraycation - is when you visit the Turner Classic Movies Museum.

OJcation - is when you rent a Bronco from Hertz and travel the LA highways.

I would be his competitor but he had an interest in bringing good people into the world of print journalism and I guess he must have liked me, my background, and my mission. He was very sharing and I’ll always be grateful to him and think the world of him and his great organization. Typical of most newspaper people, Jim has tried to retire. Several times. But printer’s ink runs deep in his blood and he still gets involved in the business from time to time.

He’s a great newspaperman and a superb human being. If he ever needs me for anything, I’m here for him, just as he was there for me.

My very first advertiser was Paul Van Middlesworth, owner of The Computer Factory. He and his wife, Nome, are still with me today.

They’ve been with me from the start. In addition to being a staunch and steady advertiser they very quickly became very good friends.

They are like family to me.

I made the deal and acquired The San Marcos News Reporter.

Bill Willoughby had run a primarily conservative newspaper and wrote most of it himself . . . and always from a very conservative point of view. He had a couple of columnists, one a conservative, one a liberal, and it was fairly well balanced.

But, I thought, boring.

I didn’t want to be associated with the “old” image of the weekly newspaper so I opted to change the name to ‘The Paper.” We changed the format, focusing on a weekly cover story, a weekly humor column, a weekly historical column (written by the late Roy Haskins, Lt. Colonel, USAF, Retired, and, later,

Deadlines being what they are for this Sunday column, this essayist missed a momentous occasion recently. Yogi Berra accepted an honorary degree from St. Louis University and delivered the commencement speech for 1,900 graduates and 10,000 in attendance at Scottrade Center.

It's hard to imagine a more promising lingual event. Berra is to vocal communication what Don Cherry is to the fashion industry. Yogi doesn't so much command the English language as he corkscrews it. It is part of what makes the baseball Hall of Famer and pride of the Hill one of America 's endearing figures.

So here is, in its entirety, Yogi's dissertation:

I was here. Everything looks the same, only different. Of course, things in the past are never as they used to be.

Before I speak, I have something I'd like to say. As you may know, I never went to college, or high school for that matter. To be honest, I'm not much of a public speaker, so I will try to keep this short as long as I can.

As I look out upon all of the young people here tonight, there are a number of words of wisdom I might depart. But I think the most irrelevant piece of advice I can pass along is this:

The most important things in life are the things that are least important.

I could have gone a number of directions in my life. Growing up on the Hill, I could have opened a restaurant or a bakery. But the more time I spent in places like that, the less time I wanted to spend there. I knew that if I wanted to play baseball, I was going to have to play baseball. My childhood friend, Joe Garagiola , also became a bigleague ballplayer, as did my son, Dale I think you'll find the similarities in our careers are quite different.

Dear Readers: Over the last two weeks I have had computer problems, and because of circumstances beyond my control, have lost numerous emails. Today we have had as high as 28,000 distribution with the average being around 20,000. That translates to about 40,000 readers weekly. (Typically a weekly newspaper is read 2.5 times every week.

20,000 x 2.5 = 50,000 readers, so 40,000 readers is conservative.)

We did not shy away from controversy. In one of our first cover stories we both amused, confused, and possibly enraged some of our readers by featuring a Nudist Resort in Palm Springs, with color photo s on the front page. I had visited the resort and wrote a first person account of my visit there (very favorable) and I had adopted the uniform of the day while on campus. Which meant I became one of the nudists.

I remember Roy Haskins shaking his head and saying, “a couple of my pals told me over coffee . . .’that lyle davis, you just never know what he’s gonna write about next.”

And that was true.

I began to take an almost perverse delight in coming up with cover stories that the reader never knew from week to week what to expect.

Some were humorous, some covered tragedy, some were historical, some focused on local events.

9th Annual Tots ‘N Trucks and Grape Day 5K Events - The 9th Annual Tots ‘N Trucks and Grape Day 5K will take place on Saturday, October 12th at Grape Day Park on Broadway Avenue in Escondido.

We also introduced color to The Paper. Prior to this, the “old” paper had been all black and white with nary a dash of color. Under our plan the cover story was always illustrated in full color and we offered up other color pages to advertisers.

Word got out that there was a new game in town and readers quickly adopted us as part of their family, even if and when they didn’t totally agree with us. Families are like that, you know.

I still remember our very first issue.

There is a copy or two floating around but I avoid looking at it as it was absolutely terrible! It was an embarrassment to me.

I have bribed her to hide it but she keeps it in a safe place and threatens to show it to others if I don’t behave.

I had never published anything before and my first issue was ample proof of that. Over time, and with a lot of help from fellow professionals, I have learned a thing or two and today I think we put out a pretty good product, one of which I am quite proud, for reasons I shall go into shortly.

I quckly learned that I couldn’t do it all myself. I could scribble fairly well. I had been a radio broadcaster for 25 years, had been a war correspondent in S. Vietnam for two

over 20 years with seldom a harsh word between us. Mainly because I’ve learned to say, “yes, ma’am,” a lot. (She is also much smarter than me. People think I’m smart. I’m not. I just hang around smart people and the casual observer just assumes I’m smart. I’ve gotten away with that for years!) It was Evelyn that came up with the name for her column, “The Social Butterfly.”

One day I sat down and told her I was at a loss. I was hopeless at office work. Could she help me out a bit? Just temporary, you understand.

That was over 20 years ago and she is still with me. In fact, I liked her so much I made her my partner.

She owns a good chunk of The Paper. She is also known as The Social Butterfly, writing a weekly social column listing events, attending a variety of meetings . . meanwhile handlng the billing, book-keeping, legal notices which have to be filed with the county, handling the subscriptions, she’s our proof-reader, and she is a fantastic diplomat. I’m a grouchy old bear at times and it’s often best that she talk to a disgrunted reader or, worse, advertiser.

That gal? Her name is Evelyn Madison and she’s the brains of the outfit.

The Paper • Page 4 • October 10, 2019 Police Seek Witnesses of Residential Burglary

On October 5, the City of Carlsbad Police Department arrested 26-year old Esparza Alan Arias of Los Angeles for Residential Burglary and other charges. Investigators are asking the residents of the area to check their cameras to see if they have images of the suspect.

Investigators believe that Arias entered two houses and attempted to enter a third when the resident encountered the suspect and fired a warning gunshot in the air.

The first incident occurred at approximately 12:30 am in the 6500 block of Paseo Frontera. The victim in this case didn’t contact the police until 1:24 a.m.

Reportedly the suspect entered the house and touched the male resident while he was sleeping, the resident awoke to find him in his bedroom. When confronted by the resident, the suspect fled the house.

The second incident was reported at 1:12 a.m., in the 2900 block of Unicornio Street. The residents awoke to find the suspect in their home. When confronted, the suspect fled the house.

Officers were called to the third incident at 1:29 a.m., in the 3000 block of Xana Way. The resident found the suspect attempting to enter his home. The resident confronted the suspect through a win-

Man About Town A Soft Touch for Dogs

Anyone who knows me knows that dogs are what I love in life.

Several months ago I wrote here about how Cindy, a “chug” (chihuahua/pug mix) that has captured the hearts of both Evelyn and me, was diagnosed with lymphoma (blood cancer).

We were referred to California Veterinary Specialists in Carlsbad and were lucky enough to meet with Dr. Ogilvie who took Cindy under his wing and prescribed a series of chemotherapy sessions for her. We are happy to report that Cindy is in full remission and has one more chemo treatment.

When the officers that were nearby investigating the other incidents heard the gunshot, they quickly responded to the area and located the suspect hiding behind a vehicle nearby. At 1:38 a.m., officers detained the suspect in the 3000 block of Xana Way. Investigators are asking resident in the area to check their cameras and call 760-931-3819 to report any possible sightings of the suspect.

The suspect was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

Carlsbad PD arrests woman in series of gym thefts

A 32-year-old woman was arrested Sept. 19 by Carlsbad police in connection with a rash of thefts at area gyms after a traffic stop, according to Lt. Kevin Lehan.

The woman, Mayra Vasquez of Carlsbad, is charged with dozens of crimes including possession of stolen property in what Lehan described as a series of robberies from December 2018 to September.

He also said Vasquez went to the gyms, found unlocked lockers and stole items such as passports, money and other personal affects.

In addition, Vasquez allegedly took

Julie first met her beloved pup, Cosmo, at an adoption event. A rescue organization had pulled him from a shelter where he was at risk of being euthanized. And it’s a good thing they did, because Julie and Cosmo were made for each other.

Today, Cosmo spends his days as a service dog, providing guidance and support for Julie, who uses a wheelchair as a result of cerebral palsy. Julie says that Cosmo takes his work very seriously — when he has his service dog vest on, he’s all business!

Although Cosmo has a critical job to do, he’s far more than just a helper or a pet. Julie says that he is the love of her life and gives her a reason to keep moving forward.

Julie may have rescued Cosmo when she brought him home, but she feels that he saved her as well.

“It was rampant all over the place,” Lehan said.

Vasquez appears to have targeted dozens of gyms from Murrieta to Chula Vista including 24-Hour Fitness, L.A. Fitness, Chuze and Equinox. Lehan said Vasquez also targeted other facilities with gyms such as Tri-City Wellness.

Lehan said Vasquez allegedly targeted lockers without locks or safety mechanisms. She would then steal anything of value, including car keys, and search for more property to take.

In total, 56 victims have come forward, although Lehan said the number is likely higher. Vasquez is currently being held in the Vista Detention Center on $500,000 bond.

While Vasquez was arrested, Lehan said authorities are also investigating other evidence received by law enforcement. “We’re still tying this altogether,” he added. “With that many victims over, that many cases over that amount of time, we got a lot going on.”

Lehan said the Carlsbad Police Department was investigating at least 20 cases in Carlsbad and 30 countywide.

Lyle, It was good to read of the origins of so many expressions in THE PAPER. I learned some things I'd never thought of.

It takes some of us old folks to recall some of the origins of things.

Here's one that, I think has been missprinted.as "I don't give a damn" I heard some time ago that it should be "I don't give a DAM."

Another SCAM

A couple days ago I got a fundraising letter in the mail for the St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota.

Impressive package. I got mailing labels with my name and address on them, a dream catcher (made in China), samples of thank you and seasonal gift cards, a note pad, and a list of suggested donations that would buy books for an Indian child, warm bedding for an Indian Child, Meals, etc., in various denominations. These were Lakota (Sioux) Indians being served.

I was touched. I generally support American Indian populations, am close friends with one member of the Kumeyaay Nation (he's one of our best writers) and I thought, "well, I'll just mail them a check for $50."

"Wait a minute," sez my skeptical mind. "Better check this organization out."

Bev & Roy Haskins offered to help The Paper. Roy, a retired Air Force Colonel who was used to flying great big ol’ airplanes, now offered to drive a little old car while I delivered papers. and sprang a hole we didn't throw it away and buy a new one, but called an itinerant tinsmith or tinker to fix it. He put a patch on it with a little solder. If he had to work on it at an angle he built a little dam with some mud to keep the solder from running out of control. After finshing the job he then brushed the dam away since it was of no more use.

The then used- up dam became the symbol of "no value." This ninetygenarian remembers when "I don't give a dam" was originally "I don't give a tinker's dam."

Very talented.Troy Larson, our Art Director for most of our 20 years, is the guy responsible for and who comes up with the great cover art you see every week. He also builds Billy Wilder, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis.

Unfortunately, Marilyn was otherwise engaged. I had media from all three major networks, the LA Times, the NY Times, a television network in Australia, as well as one in Austria, and England. I had all the featured actors who were still alive as guests that weekend. I got PSA to fly them down from various points in California.

If the Casino industry wants to gain new customers it should return to its roots. Seventy years ago my husband and I loved Vegas. We went twice a year and we were just a young couple starting out. We couldn’t afford a five star hotel with a fabulous pool and high end restaurants. We went in a pick-up camper and slept in the parking lot after they closed the RV parks behind the casino. Parking was free so we hit all the casinos, even the ones on the edge of town. We went for the free lounge shows, the entertainment. We could see all the

Eight former students of St. Joseph's Indian School on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation filed a lawsuit with the South Dakota Supreme Court in 2010.

The South Dakota Supreme Court also heard childhood-sexual-abuse lawsuits brought by 18 former students of St. Paul’s Indian Mission, on the Yankton Sioux Reservation, in Marty, South Dakota. St. Paul’s was one of a half-dozen Catholic boarding schools statewide for Native children, and the alleged crimes, including rape, sodomy, and molestation, occurred there before 1975, when the institution was transferred to the tribe and renamed Marty Indian School.

In March 2011, Circuit Court Judge Bradley Zell dismissed the cases, kicking off the appeal. In throwing out the suits, Zell decided a 2010 amendment to South Dakota childhood-sexual-abuse law — HB 1104

Under HB 1104, plaintiffs over age 40 may collect damages only from individual perpetrators of childhood sexual abuse; they may not collect damages from entities such as the Catholic Church or the religious orders that hired and/or supervised the alleged perpetrators. (Younger plaintiffs may continue to sue and obtain damages from both organizations and individuals.)

Since the Native plaintiffs in these cases — and additional ones against other Church boarding schools — are over 40, and many of the individual perpetrators are dead, some say the legislature’s action and Zell’s decision targeted them. “In conversations I’ve had, people feel the 2010 amendment was designed both to make things difficult for Native plaintiffs and to help the Church,” said Robert Brancato, a certified fraud examiner who heads the Rapid City chapter of the national support group, Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests.

Brancato also criticized the judge’s decision to project the law backward in time, calling it a violation of due process: “I’m looking at the bill right now, and I don’t see anything about it being retroactive.”

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk – Sunday, October 20th is the date for the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” Walk. This year is the 22nd anniversary of the Walk to be held at Balboa Park to unite communities, honor those touched by the disease and raise awareness and funds for a world without breast cancer. This year’s walk features a shortened course of 2.5 miles, while retaining the most picturesque and popular features – those of crossing the iconic Cabrillo Bridge and strolling along the closed northbound lanes of Highway 163. Registration for this event begins at 6:30am and the walk is set to start at 7:30am. Dollars raised help the American Cancer Society (ACS) fund innovative breast cancer research; provide education and guidance to help people reduce their risk; and offer comprehensive patient support to those who need it most.

Last year, 25,000 walkers helped to raise more than $715,000. The San Diego walk is one of the largest events of its kind in the Western United States. The Balboa Park setting will host a Survivor VIP area, photo area, and entertainment from the stage.

Environmental and Business Benefits

Synchronizing traffic lights will not only reduce the time we sit at traffic lights, but will also reduce tons of emissions with benefits to business and our economy. In response to a study conducted in Salinas, CA, 5 intersections on their main street had installed traffic signal synchronization and saved 15.8 TONS of GHG emissions in ONE year! Not to mention the cost benefit ratio of 50:1.

Studies show that synchronization projects can reduce traffic delays by up to 30% and in 41 California cities, synchronization resulted in travel time reductions of 6.5% and fuel consumption declined by about 6.4 million gallons. That's valuable time and money, moving goods and employees while using less fuel. In Orange County, traffic stops were reduced by 41%, travel time by 22%, and fuel consumption by 12%. That's why Los Angeles synchronized all of its 4,500 traffic signals, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by about 16%. It’s obvious that with fewer cars idling at intersections or crawling along in stop-and-go traffic, much less pollution gets released into the atmosphere.

That’s why my bill, Assembly Bill 1447, passed with overwhelming support and was ultimately signed

into law by Gov. Brown four years ago. It allowed local governments and planning agencies with synchronization projects as part of a sustainable project to be eligible for Greenhouse Gas Reduction funding. Since my bill taps sources of funding already in place, these traffic improvements can be accomplished without raising taxes, while reducing pollution with economic benefit.

AB 1447 is an example of strong bi-partisan legislation that benefits all Californians. Our state has always been at the forefront of policies to protect and improve the environment. Nowhere is this more evident than the state’s efforts to reduce smog, toxic air contaminants, and GHG emissions.

So much news! How have you been? I loved visiting with you at J&Ms Lyle, and have yet to tour you both through Forensic Health. Since we last spoke, I am not sure if I let you know how we have expanded our forensic offerings to train child abuse prevention and the DAs want us to be integrated in their plans to expand the Family Justice Centers regionally.

Palomar Health is enjoying financial stability and is at 110 days cash on hand thereby fulfilling that key bond covenant, and our first female CEO made that happen. I hope you can meet our CEO Diane Hansen soon. We just broke ground on a new Rehabilitation Institute at the site of Palomar Medical Center at 2185 Citracado in Escondido in joint partnership with Kindred. The fact that Kindred has now publicly partnered with us in this project is not a coincidence. Our financial strength matters to all and Moody’s rating takes this into account when they calculate the algorithm of our borrowing power and bond rating.

Pinch me! We are having a gala at Aviara in Carlsbad October 26 and it will be cochaired by James Haven (James Haven Voight to be technical- he’s son of John Voight and brother of Angelina Jolie) and the Rabbi from Poway who survived the tragic synagogue shooting because proceeds will go to Forensic Health and to improve the Poway ER. Mr. Bob Wilson who helped save the Forensic Health program as well as recently gave a check to every child at Paradise high school affected by the Paradise Fire will be honored. A local treasure, he attended Escondido High, and his philanthropic story is inspirational. And Rosie, a phenomenal young woman with her own survivor story will be speaking to us all about the power of our forensics.

In 1984, led by Dr. Mary Spencer, at the request of educators and police, what would eventually become San Diego’s only comprehensive Forensic Health Services (FHS) center took root at Palomar Health. Our services expanded in 1991 when a woman was raped in Rancho Santa Fe and taken to three area hospitals before anyone would do her exam. We were the caregivers who stepped up since we were already serving area children. FHS serves the county with distinction by providing vital and compassionate medical-legal services. Today services include child abuse interviews and foster child health assessments via our nationally accredited Child Advocacy Center, and Sexual Assault Response Team exams, child abuse prevention trainings, Domestic Abuse Forensic Exams and in-court testimony. Famous cases include helping the family of Chelsea King get justice, and the Kelly Elementary School shooting. A source of great pride, the forensics and compassionate care this multi-disciplinary team provides continues to help law enforcement present the best scientific evidence possible. The team has a 95% conviction rate. Last year, we served an average of 4 San Diegans a day.

Of course, times were different. To be honest, I was born at an early age. Things are much more confiscated now. It seems like a nickel ain't worth a dime anymore. But let me tell you, if the world was perfect, it wouldn't be. Even Napoleon had his Watergate.

You'll make some wrong mistakes along the way, but only the wrong survive. Never put off until tomorrow what you can't do today. Denial isn't just a river in Europe Strive for success and remember you won't get what you want unless you want what you get. Some will choose a different path. If they don't want to come along, you can't stop them. Remember, none are so kind as those who will not see.

Keep the faith and follow the Commandments: Do not covet thy neighbor's wife, unless she has nothing else to wear. Treat others before you treat yourself. As Franklin Eleanor Roosevelt once said, 'The only thing you have to fear is beer itself.'

Hold on to your integrity, ladies and gentlemen. It's the one thing you really need to have; if you don't have it, that's why you need it. Work hard to reach your goals, and if you can't reach them, use a ladder. There may come a day when you get hurt and have to miss work. Don't worry, it won't hurt to miss work.

Over the years, I have realized that baseball is really just a menopause for life. We all have limitations, but we also know limitation is the greatest form of flattery. Beauty is in the eyes of Jim Holder.

Half the lies you hear won't be true, and half the things you say, you won't ever say.

As parents you'll want to give your children all the things you didn't have. But don't buy them an encyclopedia, make them walk to school like you did. Teach them to have respect for others, especially the police. They are not here to create disorder, they are here to preserve it.

Throughout my career, I found good things always came in pairs of three. There will be times when you are an overwhelming underdog.

Give 100 percent to everything you do, and when that's not enough, give everything you have left 'Winning isn't everything, but it's better than rheumatism.'

‘The Great Lover’ Ruined by Hollywood Politics

To silent film buffs he was known as “The Great Lover” and, contrary to belief, he did not have a high, squeaky voice when he began making “sound” films. John Gilbert made the switch from silent to sound rather well, but became the victim of Hollywood politics by a powerful mogul.

Garbo continually balked.

He then made “Twelve Miles Out,” (1927), with Joan Crawford and “Man, Woman and Sin,” (1927), with Jeanne Eagels.

He was reunited with Garbo in “Love,” (1927), which was slyly advertised by MGM as "Garbo and Gilbert in Love."

In 1927, he went to jail for ten days for disturbing the peace after a drunken public bout just before his last silent film, “Desert Nights.”

Throughout his time at MGM, Gilbert frequently clashed with studio mogul Louis B. Mayer over creative, social and financial matters. On one occasion it was said Mayer made a crude remark about Garbo which led Gilbert to physically attack the powerful mogul.

Mayer detested Gilbert and was quite disgruntled the actor had signed an MGM contract for six pictures at $250,000 each. It was suggested Mayer deliberately gave Gilbert bad scripts and ineffective directors in an effort to void the contract.

With the coming of sound, Gilbert's vocal talents made a good impression in the all-star musical comedy, “The Hollywood Revue of 1929,” appearing in a Technicolor sequence with Norma Shearer. Most reviewers didn’t note any vocal problems -- with some praising it.

Born July 10, 1897, in Logan, Utah, John Gilbert, born John Cecil Pringle, he was an American actor, screenwriter and director, rising to fame during the silent film era and became a popular leading man. At the height of his career, Gilbert rivaled Rudolph Valentino as the leading man box office draw.

Though Gilbert was often cited as one of the high-profile examples of an actor who was unsuccessful in making the transition from silent to talkies, his decline as a star had far more to do with studio politics and money than with the sound of his screen voice, which, unlike popular belief, was rich and distinctive.

In 1915, Gilbert got work in movies appearing an extra in short films. His first leading role, “Princess of the Dark,” (1917), he was paid $40 a week, but was not a big success so he went back to supporting roles.

In 1921, Gilbert signed a three-year contract with the Fox Film Corporation, where he was cast as a romantic leading man with a new name: "John Gilbert.”

Fox gave Gilbert his first real starring part in “Shame,” (1921, then he starred in “Cameo Kirby,” (1923), directed by John Ford, co-starring Jean Arthur, then on to “The Wolf Man,” (1923) with Norma Shearer.

In 1924, Gilbert moved to MetroGoldwyn-Mayer, where his biggest success was King Vidor’s 1925 World War I epic, “The Big Parade,” It was the all time second-highest grossing silent film and the most profitable of the silent era.

In 1926, Gilbert made “Flesh and the Devil,” with Greta Garbo. They soon began a highly publicized love relationship, much to the delight of their fans. Gilbert wanted to marry her, but

According to reviewers, audiences laughed nervously at Gilbert's performance. But the fault was not Gilbert's voice, rather the awkward scenario along with overly ardent love scenes.

In one, Gilbert keeps kissing his leading lady, while saying "I love you" over and over again. That scene was parodied in the MGM musical “Singin' in the Rain,” (1952). It was rumored L.B. Mayer had ordered Gilbert's voice to be gelded to a higher pitch in order to ruin him.

In 1933, much to Mayer’s chargrin, Gilbert announced he had signed a seven-year contract with MGM at $75,000 to $100,000 a picture. Greta Garbo had insisted Gilbert return to MGM to play her leading man in “Queen Christina,” (1933), but the film didn’t revive his career.

Gilbert’s private life was anything but private. He was married four times, each ending on less-than-friendly and amicable terms.

Because alcoholism severely damaged Gilbert’s health, in December 1935, he suffered a serious heart attack, then a second and fatal heart attack on Jan. 9, 1936.

Among the funeral mourners were Gilbert's two ex-wives, his two daughters, and film stars Marlene Dietrich, Gary Cooper, Myrna Loy, and Raquel Torres.

Gilbert has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 1994, he was honored with his image on a U.S. postage stamp designed by noted caricaturist Al Hirschfeld.

Escondido Council Member Olga Diaz

At one time I was a major critic of Escondido City Council member, Olga Diaz. She was Liberal, I tend to lean toward the Conservatives side of the fence . . . though I’m liberal on some issues.

Then an interesting thing happened.

I went to lunch with Olga and got to know her. I found that not only did she not have horns and an evil grin but she was, in fact, a rather nice person. We still disagreed in some areas but we became friends.

I have endorsed Olga several times in her campaigns for both the City

building a baseball stadium to accommodate the San Diego Padres Minor League Club.

I thought that plan was just plain nuts and said so. Repeatedly.

Eventually, someone came to their senses and the baseball stadium idea went away, but not before Mayor Sam managed to have the city buy up a lot of property on the west side of Escondido where he felt the baseball stadium should be - and where he could oversee the building of an industrial park.

That industrial park still has to see the light of day.

Mayor Sam was quite a character.

Always well dressed, looking like a model from Gentlemen’s Quarterly. At his Town Hall meetings he was much more patient than I would have been had I been presiding.

There was much about him to admire - but almost an equal amount about him to disagree with.

He doesn’t much care for me and has confided to his friends that he thinks I probably belong in a zoo someplace, very close to the Chimpanzee exhibit.

One of the problems Sam had was if you disagreed with him you were automatically the enemy. Former Escondido Mayor Wil Mason had the same philosophy.

Probably our biggest controversy involving Mayor Sam was his handling of the termination of Escondido’s Police Chief, Jim Maher. I can’t remember a more clumsy way of handling a personnel issue. We documented rather extensively all that had happened both in the public arena as well as behind closed door and Mayor Sam was right in the middle of it all along with his city manager which he controlled just like a puppet.

Chief Maher has now retired and a fine new Chief, Craig Carter, now heads up the Escondido Police Department. I’ve known Chief Carter for years. He was at one time a member of the Kiwanis Club to which I belonged and was scheduled to take over as president the following year . . . and then two North County girls were murdered and Craig became the official spokesperson for the EPD and was unable to attend meetings let alone become our president.

It was later that he would be named Chief of Police and, by all accounts, he’s doing a finejob.

Remember my earlier discussion about Olga Diaz? The Liberal Councilmember whom I once criticized so strongly? And then became friends with her?

Well, I went on to endorse Olga both for her run for Escondido Mayor as well as her Council races.

This incensed Sam Abed so much

that he chose to no longer write his weekly “Letter from the Mayor” to and for The Paper. He thought he was “punishing” me. In fact, the only one he punished was himself.

People wondered why he no longer was communicating with them via The Paper.

He wound up looking petty.

Today, we enjoy a good working relationship with the North County Mayors . . . Mayor Paul McNamara, Escondido, Mayor Rebecca Jones, San Marcos, Mayor Judy Ritter, Vista, and Mayor Peter Weiss, Oceanside.

We’re proud to carry weekly columns by Assembly Member Marie Waldron and District 5 Supervisor Jim Desmond.

We also are proud of our four pastors who rotate every week with a column, “The Pastor Says ...” always on Page 10.

We can’t tell you how many phone calls we get praising veteran newspaperman and columnist, Tom Morrow. Tom loves history and his weekly column is always a joy to read as I edit it (very little editing to do; remember, he’s got a lot of years as a writer and editor himself). Tom is always on page 7.

Almost 10 years ago we were approached by a young writer who submitted a story abut Del Mar and its racehorses. We published it, on July 15, 2010.

It was very well received by our readers. He submitted another story. We published it. Again, the readers responded positively.

His name was, and is, Friedrich Gomez . . . a proud member of the Kumeyaay Indian Nation - a fluent reader, writer and speaker of the German language and a brilliant researcher and writer.

At last count, Friedrich Gomez, whose Indian name is “White Eagle,” has written 142 cover stories for us.

But he’s been sober for 48 years.

Quite an accomplishment! And he is a brilliant writer as well.

Pete was a whiz at marketing and sales, retiring after a successful career, with enough money to buy coffee and cars and clothes and put kids through college.

We have celebrities here at home as well . . . one of the more famous is Charlie Mitich, owner of Charlie’s Restaurant (see photo on previous column).

It is said that Charlie is the resident expert on the food service industry and knows almost everybody in town. The only one I know that knows more people than Charlie is a good friend from Holland . . . a young man named Arie DeJong.

He doesn’t need the money we pay him to write cover stories for The Paper (but he does accept our checks). He simply writes because he loves to write.

He facilitates the Escondido Writers Group the first and third Tuesday of the month at the Escondido library and has helped over a dozen new writers become published.

He served as an Embassy Marine at three foreign embassies, and 9 months in the White House during the Eisenhower Administration.

Pete has an amazing ability to write in the dialect of the midwest/southerner . . . such as you hear in Missouri. To me, he writes some of his stories much in the style of my favorite writer of all time, Samuel Clemens, whom you and I know better as Mark Twain.

We’ve attended a lot of concerts, met a lot of top drawer entertainers, Dick Clark, Glen Campbell, Jimmy Durante, Steve Allen, Lucille Ball (didn’t like her), Ed Ames, of the Ames Brothers (didn’t like him either), Johnny Carson, Clint Eastwood, Rod Laver, the Australian tennis great, Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., JoAnne Worley (from Laugh-In) . . . and we’ve seen Bob Newhart, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, and Hank Thompson and his Brazos Valley Boys, and Fess Parker (who played Daniel Boone in the tv series) came by to pay a social call, as did “Goober” (George Lindsey from from the Andy Griffith tv series.) We also saw Garrison Keillor, creator of the Prairie Home Companion and chronicler of the events in Lake Woebegone, his fictional home town.

Arie, I believe, delivered milk from Hollandia Dairy to every single home in Escondido. At least it seems that way. Not a day goes by but what Arie will say, “oh, I know that family. I used to deliver milk to them.”

We did a story on Arie, several times in fact, and pointed out that not only is he a brilliantly successful businessman but also a major philanthropist in North County.

I am privileged to call Arie DeJong and his beautiful wife, Anneke, as friends. I look forward to visiting with thm (Anneke makes the best coffee in the world and this comes form a noncoffee drinker!)

I have spent a half day with Arie on several occasions and each time I was exhausted by noon. Arie was just getting warmed up.

Arie goes like a bee from point A to point B, stops to chat with everyone, then goes off to his next mission.

He has a large family in North San Diego County and still goes home to Holland from time to time.

Evelyn and I have fallen in love with Friedrich and think of him almost as a third son. Evelyn has two sons, as do I.

Pleased to report that Arie loves The Paper and never misses reading it.

We also began to publish stories from a fascinating guy named R.L. “Pete” Peterson.

Pete will be the first person to tell you he is a drunk.

Brilliant talents all of them - but some are more likable than others.

Man About Town Cont. from Page 5 Zell disagreed, saying the situation was “convoluted” and that his decision was based on a 1997 South Dakota Supreme Court ruling that made retroactive a 1991 expansion of opportunities to bring sexualabuse claims in the state. Following that logic, Zell said, the latest change to the law would be retroactive, too.

On the other hand, said plaintiff’s attorney Rebecca Rhoades, of Manly & Stewart, in Newport Beach California, South Dakota’s legal code says that no law “shall be construed as retroactive unless such intention plainly appears.”

“It’s a quandary,” said Zell. “The Supreme Court will decide, and if they send the cases back, hopefully they’ll provide guidance.” He didn’t expect a decision for at least six months.

On December 14th, 2011 the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled former students of the St. Joseph's Indian School on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation can pursue a lawsuit over alleged abuse, on 12/14/2001.

Eight former students filed the lawsuit in June 2010. A copy was first served to the executive director of child services at the school, who was not a registered agent of the Congregation of the Priests of the

Sacred Heart. The lawsuit was later served within 60 days to the president of the PSHI, which operates the school. But in the meantime, the South Dakota Legislature passed a law that places a time limit on the filing of abuse lawsuits. The South Dakota Supreme Court, however, ruled that the service on the president of the PSHI was "related" to the first service. That means the plaintiffs won't be affected by the new law, which Indian advocates have described as unfair.

"Therefore, we hold that the Plaintiffs timely served PSHI in accordance with South Dakota law and the circuit court did not err in denying PSHI’s motion to dismiss," the decision stated.

As of October 2018 the results of the lawsuit have not been public. It is widely assumed that a settlement was reached and the Catholic Church paid the victims of child sexual abuse and bound them with non-disclosure agreements as the Church has done in many other cases.

Fundraising

In the 2010s, St. Joseph's School has been investigated for several issues related to its fundraising practices. In 2013 the school failed to meet the give.org standard.

In 2014 it was the subject of investigative reports by CNN and Indian Country Today. The school sent out mass mailings featuring offers of made-in-China dreamcatchers and

fictional, emotional letters from nonexistent students. These tactics have been called, "the worst of poverty porn." Cooper went on to report, "A school run by nonIndians is raising a fortune off of racial stereotypes."

In 2014 the school's attorney told Indian Country Today that they would "never, ever" send any more of the fictional letters. But as of 2015, the school continues its aggressive direct mail campaign, sending tens of millions of pieces of junk mail a year.

The school has been criticized by the Better Business Bureau for sending out a letter claiming they had insufficient funds to heat the school. At the time of this claim, the school had millions of dollars free to spend.

I like to think I'm fairly smart urbane - up to speed on a lot of things . . . but this fundraising letter had touched me. Had I not played detective I would likely have sent off that heck for $50.

27 years ago this month, New Song Community Church was born. I remember driving to the site of our first worship service that morning. We had been praying for nine months. Would anyone show up?

After unloading the trailer, setting up children’s rooms, the stage, the sound system and the donut table, several of us circled up to pray for God’s Spirit to be strong with us. After the “amen,” Mike Perry said, “I feel like we should say something like ‘Praise the Lord!’ together or something.”

“That’s a little too churchy for me,” I said. “How about if we all say, “Yea God!”? Hands came together, and God got praise.

1,400 Sundays

I did the math this morning.

We’ve worshiped together over 1,400 weekends so far. Every one of them has included circles of prayer, concluded with a “Yea God!” Most of them have included laughter, and tears, and salvations.

I once asked the Lord to let me be part of a church that saw a disciple a day come to Jesus. I did the math on that this morning too. So far, we are averaging a little over not one, but two people per day coming to Jesus!

Ephesians 3:20 says, “God is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us …”

He is not only able, He really has done more than I have asked or imagined!

San Marcos Fire Department tackles wildfire prevention with technology As Southern California residents, we know that wildfire danger is a year-round threat. Emergency preparedness is a top priority, and the City of San Marcos is committed to keeping our community safe.

Leveraging state-of-the-art inspection software paired with property data courtesy of SanGIS (the San Diego Geographic Information Source), San Marcos fire inspectors can arrive at a property with an iPad, have instant access to property and owner information, and complete a hazard inspection using ESRI's (Environmental Systems Research Institute) ArcGIS Collector application.

The process streamlines inspections with pre-built inspection forms that send automated notices to property owners with a few button clicks. The software also allows inspectors to capture photos of potential hazards, which can be attached to the hazard notification.

Currently, fire inspectors are surveying the City, as well as the unincorporated areas of the San Marcos Fire Protection District.

The next topic of the three that keeps me up at night is traffic and transportation. Before I begin, I want to give a shout out to our city staff. As part of the election, we wanted to have a more open and transparent dialogue with the city residents. After all, and to borrow a phrase from Conway School, we are all in the same boat, and not passengers but crew.

The staff set up several groups/committees that are about ready to launch. We had over 150 people sign up to work on them. They cover every aspect that affects the desirability of a city. I will report back their concerns and their solutions.

So, when it comes to traffic, I would ask you to think about what affects (increases or reduces) traffic and how can we implement those solutions. Before we can solve anything, we need to understand the problem. Just remember there are no simple answers.

future stars up close and personal for free. We’d have a couple of drinks at the bar and we would even put some money in at the black jack table or the slot machines. Not a lot of money, because we didn’t have a lot of money. Going to Vegas was a big deal for us. I even bought a couple of long dresses so I wouldn’t look out of place with the partying crowds. The atmosphere was electric and everyone was smiling.

If we stayed out really late we could get a fabulous breakfast very cheaply. In those days there were a few casinos with inexpensive dinner buffets also. We could make our money stretch a long way and still gamble some. If we were lucky we could see a few Hollywood stars at the gaming tables. It was exciting.

The last time I went to Vegas I swore I would never go back. The hotel had a long line to check in, they had lost my reservation so I had

to pay more than the booking agent originally quoted. The breakfast we had was a fast food nightmare in the middle of the casino with bells ringing all around us. The shows were over a hundred dollars apiece for poor seats. Good thing I took binoculars. I couldn’t possibly eat enough food at the dinner buffet to justify the price, nor would I want to for my health. Parking cost us so much we were marooned in one casino. Now we couldn’t gamble a little in each casino all over town because we had to pay the gambling money for parking.

Some of the free shows, before they died, had gotten so raunchy I no longer wanted to see them. Too much sexuality. Some of it right out on the street. The ship no longer sailed. The free entertainment in Vegas had sailed with it. You could see a lounge show but now there was a charge as great as going to a play at home, parking was difficult at an old casino that almost gagged you with cigarette smell. That is not what I consider worth driving six

Meet the Firefighters At Their “House” We are in the middle of this year’s Fire Prevention Week and now is a great time to remind residents to check the dates on their smoke alarms.

Our Vista Fire Department educates the public to replace smoke alarms every ten years. Many residents don’t know how old their smoke alarms are, or how often they need to be replaced. To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date. Do you still have questions about smoke alarms or other fire preventive tips? The public is invited to an Open House at Fire Station #5, located at 2009 S. Melrose Drive on Saturday, October 12. Meet the firefighters and tour the station, and the younger kids can take part in fun educational activities. Firefighters will also provide handson training on how to use a fire extinguisher.

The open house is from 1-4 PM and is a fun, free, family event.

Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss Quilts on Display!

Please join the Oceanside Public Library in welcoming Free Spirit Art Quilters on Tuesday, October 15 at 1:00 p.m. at the Mission Branch Library for a FREE screening of excerpts from Why Quilts Matter: History Art & Politics, episode 4: What is Art? and episode 5: Gee’s Bend, “The Most Famous Quilts in America”. Artists from the Free Spirit Art Quilters group will be on hand for questions and discussion.

Free Spirit Art Quilters, an art quilt group that was formed in 2003, will have quilts on display at the Mission Branch Library October 3 – October 31. Every year, Free Spirit Art Quilters select a challenge as a theme for their show and create work to answer that theme. This year the theme is "Where does Color Take You".

Each artist has used individual inspirations for this challenge and a variety of Art Quilts will be on display.

This free event is open to the public and made possible by the Friends of the Oceanside Public Library.

At least the parking is free at an Indian Casino. We might even have our number called for a chance for big bucks once an hour. Then that changed to a crock pot or barbeque prize. We used to be able to play for hours for $20 because the odds we’d win a small amount were so good. It kept us going for hours of fun.

We used to go up to the big bertha machine with our last dollar at the end of our Vegas trips as a last hoorah. We’d each spin once. The last time all the wheels lined up and we stood there in silence waiting for the big pay off. Soon people around us noticed and came over to see the big win. Silence. Finally someone in the back asked, “How much did you put in?”

A dollar we both replied.

The crowd groaned in unison, before someone whispered you have to play $3 to get the big pay out.

Then the crowd was angry at us and we heard many of them say, “now it won’t come up again for months”.

That is the way I feel about Vegas.

There is always a small catch that leaves out the little guy.

Go back to your roots. It was the millions of little guys who got a

really good vacation on the cheap, that made Vegas a big success and that’s who will make the Indian Casino’s successful.

Pala is your proof. Once a week there is a free concert for the old folks. When I first started going there were maybe three hundred people and now it is over a thousand every week. We can get a reasonably priced lunch in the coffee shop, and parking is free. Of course I usually put a few dollars in the machines before or after the show.

It is free entertainment and reasonably priced food that draws me and the millions of other folks who made Vegas a success. If you are gearing your casino to the “whales” there aren’t so many of them as there are minnows. /s/ Barbara Saad San Diego County
