Editor’s Note: This story is likely to make some of our readers very angry. It did me as well. Some of you may argue “why would you print such a terrible story?” The answer is, it’s a story that needs to be told.

It’d a dirtly little secret that has been covered up in Afghanistan, by the Afghan government, by our military leaders, and by our government, and only now are bits and pieces being leaked out.

For those of you who are offended, I’m sorry the story offends you But I’m not sorry we published the story. That’s what newspapers and their editors do . . tell stories. Some of which are painful. As is this one.

••••• I’m just a little old country boy from Minnesota and Nebraska and I guess I don’t really understand the ways of the world.

But maybe somebody far more wise than me can explain what in the hell are we doing in Afghanistan?

Why are we there?

Like many of you, I took Sociology in college . . . and I learned that other cultures differ a great deal from ours.

They have customs, traditions and practices that are abhorren to us . . . but that we, as worldly souls, need to not judge but just accept they have a different culture than ours and we should ignore those actions that offend us.

Philosophically, I understand the logic of that argument. But then I read of an Afghan custom known as “bacha bazi,” or “boy play.” Sounds innocent enough . . . but it’s not.

It is custom of Afghan man grabbing young boys, as young as 10 years old, even younger, and raping them Sodomy.

You may have read about or heard of a current case that is under review by the US Military forces that sought to remove a Special Operations Sergeant (Green Beret) from the military because he was so upset at an Afghan militia man who kidnapped a 12-year-old boy and chained him to his bed The Paper - 760.747.7119

as a sex slave, and repeatedly sodomized him.

Sergeant First Class Charles Martland became so enraged at this treatment of an innocent young boy that he beat the Afghan militiaman soundly.

Gave him a good, well-earned thumping. Kicked the pudding out of him.

This is just one of those dirty little secrets that we learn about Afghan and their “culture” - if you can call it that.

SFC Martland was unwilling to “look the other way.” This Green Beret took matters into his own hands and beat the hell out of the Afghan militiaman who raped the 12 year-old boy repeatedly.

I say, good for him.

Had he killed the guy I would have shed no tears.

But, as they did in Vietnam, the top brass and politicians got involved and decided that Sergeant Martland was no longer fit be be part of our military.

I say bunk.

The Afghans can grow poppy fields, harvest them and convert the end product to heroin

base . . . and we look the other way . . . because we don’t want to offend the warlords on whom we count for support against the Taliban, Al Queda and, now, presumably, ISIS. The Afghans, it seems, are incapable of having any government, at any level, that is not entirely corrupt.

Yet we look the other way when funds are diverted because it’s better to not rock the boat when we’re dealing with an ally in fighting evil.

When she was completely disrobed on the operating table, the staff noticed that her pubic hair had been dyed green and above it there was a Tattoo that read . . .'Keep off the grass.'

To cover my embarrassment I had unconsciously formed a habit of whistling softly.

The middle-aged lady upon whom I was performing this exam suddenly burst out laughing, further embarrassing me.

I looked up from my work and sheepishly said . . . ' I'm sorry.

Was I tickling you?'

She replied with tears running down her cheeks from laughing so hard . . . 'No doctor, but the song you were whistling was, ' I wish I was an Oscar Meyer Wiener.'

‘Why in Afghanistan?’

(This is the same incident in which Sgt. Martland was involved in.

Quinn was Martland’s commanding officer.)

His story and those of two other Americans is recounted.

Apparently, there has been much personal and career damage caused by this amoral policy of non-intervention.

As it turns out, in Afghanistan there is a ritualized form of sexual abuse called “bacha bazi” – or boy play. (The practice was supposedly banned under the Taliban, and it is nominally illegal under current Afghan law.) The boys are often trained to dance and dress as young girls before being used for sex. Some boys are just sodomized if they can’t learn these perverse geishalike talents.

An Afghan journalist, Najibullah Quraishi, produced a documentary, “The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan,” that was shown in London in late March 2010 (run time: 52 min; this version is available on vimeo.com).

Quraishi, secretly filmed and recorded a very alarming and disturbing conversation between two men who were talking about a night when a ‘beautiful’ boy laid in a van while the other men took turns having sex with him.

He explained how the boys are persuaded into the arrangement: “First the pimps select boys in the village and later on try to trick them into going with them.” He said, how some of the boys stay for money, they get monthly allowance, and in return comes whenever called and attends the party when told. He said all the pimps believe that it is a good thing and it is an Afghan culture.

If they run away and are caught, they are often killed, abused, or abandoned. Though illegal in many Near Eastern countries, the phenomenon is so widespread that even the law enforcement of the region has been observed to participate in the practice. The question is, what is being done to put a stop to it? What is being done to help these boys to freedom? Very little, sadly, despite everyone's obvious moral objection to it. They are true silent victims, and a little more outcry would go a long way to inducing the UN to put pressure on these countries to abide by their own laws and

crack down on this shameful tradition. As of yet, despite its valiant and laudible efforts to educate girls in Afghanistan, the UN hasn't seriously tackled this abuse of human rights.

Over the past decade, the phenomenon has flourished in Pashtun areas in the south, in several northern provinces and even in the capital, according to Afghans who engage in the practice or have studied it.

The State Department has mentioned the practice — which is illegal here, as it would be in most countries — in its annual human rights reports. The 2010 report said members of Afghanistan’s security forces, who receive training and weapons from the U.S.-led coalition, sexually abused boys “in an environment of criminal impunity.”

In detailed conversations with several bacha bazi masters in northern Afghanistan and with the dancing boys they own, reporter Quraishi reveals a culture where wealthy Afghan men openly exploit some of the poorest, most vulnerable members of their society.

"It's a disgusting practice. ...

It's a form of slavery, taking a child, keeping him. It's a form of sexual slavery," says Radhika Coomaraswamy. U.N. special representative for Children and Armed Conflict.

"The only way to stop bacha bazi is if you prosecute the people who commit the crime, and that's what we need, because the laws are there in the books against this practice."

Boys no younger than eight, usually good looking and attractive ones, who either are street orphans from the war or brought from poor families; are lured and snatched off the streets by pimps and pedophilia, and shared among powerful men and well-armed former commanders for entertainment and sexual activities. They then train them to sing, dance and play different instruments They are taught the skills that are useful to entertain parties made up of men only. The boys forced to dress in women’s clothes with jangling bells around their ankles, loads of makeup on their face and dance in a room filled with men. These parties are usually small and private so to be hidden. After the party is finished, the boy is shared among the men or sold to the highest bidder.

In the documentary, Quraishi interviews local police officials who insist that men who participate in bacha bazi will be arrested and punished regardless of their wealth or powerful connections. Later that day, however, Quraishi's cameras catch two officers from the same police department attending an illegal bacha bazi party.

In Islam, sexual slavery, child prostitution and sex acts with children is forbidden. It is illegal in Afghan criminal law and under Sharia law. However, it is complicated to enforce the law. Wealthy and powerful men have a lot of authority in Afghanistan. Many of the men who contribute in ‘Bacha bazi’ work for the Afghan government, including those who in public criticize the practice.

Quraishi speaks with some dancing boys who fear they will be beaten or killed. "If they stray, they get killed," says a 13-year-old dancing boy.

"Sometimes fighting happens among the men who own the boys. If you don't please them, they beat you, and people get killed."

The involvement of the police force and inaction of the government means this type of child prostitution is common.

The principle hypocrisy is shameful in a country where homosexuality is not only strictly prohibited but also savagely punished, even between two agreeable adults.

However, men who seduce young boys are not considered pedophiles or homosexuals.

"Many of the people who do this work for the government," says Nazir Alimy, who compiled a report on bacha bazi for UNICEF. "They speak out against it but are abusers themselves. ... I personally cannot mention any names because I am scared."

It’s interesting, and shameful, to note that not once did Vice President Joe Biden – nor thenDefense Secretary Leon Panetta — mention Afghanistan’s dirty secret – a large number of pedophiles and pederasts among the Afghan male population.

Pedophilia is a widely-accepted practice in southern Afghanistan, where “boys are given to older men for the sexual gratification of the elder and the sexual education of the child,” say many returning U.S. troops.

You wonder why returning troops who have seen combat in Afghanistan don’t like to talk about their experiences in the war? This is just one reason.

They see many distasteful and disgusting things in Afghanistan . . . but this tops the list as a degrading secret that our top military brass and government seeks to keep quiet.

In a country that is considered overly repressive due to its adherence to the precepts contained in the Muslim religion’s Koran, it’s difficult for American service members and diplomats to understand the fact that a large portion of the Afghan male population are pedophiles or pederasts.

While Muslims in Iraq have on several occasions stoned homosexuals for their sexual activities, not all Muslims believe pedophilia is a violation of Sharia law.

Those who believe in the sacredness and infallibility of the Koran adhere to the teaching that women are sub-human and quasislaves, and therefore Muslim men will look for relationships — even sexual relationships — with others of their own gender.

According to Reuters, there is a lot of homosexuality going on in Afghanistan, but those engaging in it don’t think of themselves as gay, so that makes it okay since Islam officially disapproves of the gay and lesbian lifestyle.

At 7:40 AM, on Saturday, October 17th, officers of the Escondido Police Department were called to the area of 1000 East Ohio Street in reference to a man found unconscious in a vehicle. Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male inside a car who had been shot. The wound was fatal.

The incident is now being investigated as a homicide. The victim has been identified as Joey Luis Porras, 22, of Escondido.

Anyone with information related to his incident is asked to contact Detective Jeff Valdivia at 760839-4428.

Elite Arson Task Force Investigates RV Dealership Fire

Federal arson experts have joined the investigation into the causes behind a fire that gutted a San Marcos recreational vehicle dealership last Sunday, causing $3.2 million in damage and sending billowing black smoke clouds over the San Marcos area.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agency announced it was sending its elie team to look into what happened at Holland RV Centers.

Heavy smoke and flames were reported raging out of the 10,800square-foot service center about 4 p.m. Sunday. Fire crews called in a three-alarm response that brought 100 firefighters from several towns.

Had a wonderful visit by phone with Carleton Appleby, former publisher of the Times Advocate, which later became the North County Times.

Carleton is 92, sounds great on the phone, like a 50 year old, but admits to some “up and down” days.

He moved to Dana Point several years ago and only occasionally makes it back down to visit Escondido. He has many friends here and enjoys visiting with them.

People like Ken Lounsbery, Dave Ferguson, Bob Piva . . . and, it is hoped, me.

We have a lunch date scheduled whenever he comes down.

While, technically, we were competitors, we also worked together on several projects, for the benefit

Explosions were clearly heard by firefighters and witnesses nearby.

It is thought the explosions were from propane tanks.

The adjacent sales center nor Camping World next door did not suffer fire damage. It took about an hour for firefighters to get the fire under control. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries and several RVs were damaged, according to the federal bureau.

The bureau said its national response teams would be working with the San Marcos Fire Department, San Diego County Sheriff’s bomb-arson squad, and locally based Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents.

Teams include veteran arson experts, forensic chemists, dogs trained to detect explosives and accelerants and forensic computer support. They work with local and state investigators to reconstruct the scene, identify the point of blast or fire origin, sift debris and conduct interviews.

Similar teams have helped investigate the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, the 9/11 Pentagon jetliner crash site and the 1995 Murrah Federal Building bombing in Oklahoma City.

It’s a rustic location, oak trees, linen covered tables, comfortable chairs, a stage with excellent musicians, and about four or five different food trucks from which to select your choice of foods. In addition, they had a bevy of volunteers, a good number of which were from the Orange Glen High School Key Clubbers, who would wander about with trays of food from which to select.

John Wesley Noble, 58, pleaded not guilty in the death of Cpl. Lindell Mitchell Jr., 21, during a Christmas Eve party in his home, according to sheriff's homicide Lt. Kenn Nelson.

Noble was arrested Monday by the San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force, according to jail records. He is being held on $1 million in bail.

So far, there are no details given about how he was linked to the homicide after 24 years. Sheriff's investigators worked with Naval Criminal Investigative Service and the District Attorney's Office, Nelson said.

Mitchell was an active-duty Marine who served in operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm attacks against Iraq in 1990 and 1991.

It was near midnight on Christmas Eve/Christmas Day when a party at Mitchell's apartment ended in a disagreement over the presence of certain guests, investigators said at the time. A group of people who had not been at the party showed up, got into a fight and shot Mitchell and beat up his roommate.

Working with an older population, our office is faced with these two monsters more often than we would like. The symptoms, isolation, withdrawal, confusion and even anger, play into the lives of not just the affected but the entire family.

••••• Great Escondido Street Faire last Sunday! Weather was near perfect. Nice cool morning, with overcast skies; even in the afternoon when the sun came out the temperature stayed in the mid to upper 70’s.

The doctor arrived, and examined the baby, checked his weight, and being a little concerned, asked if the baby was breast-fed or bottle-fed.

'Breast-fed,' she replied.

'Well, strip down to your waist,' the doctor ordered.

She did. He pinched her nipples, pressed, kneaded, and rubbed both breasts for a while in a very professional and detailed examination.

Motioning to her to get dressed, the doctor said, 'No wonder this baby is underweight. You don't have any milk.'

'I know,' she said, 'I'm his Grandma, but I'm glad I came.'

Reasons Not to Mess With Children

A little girl was talking to her teacher about whales.

The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a

whale.

Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.

The little girl said, “When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah”.

The teacher asked, “What if Jonah went to hell?”

The little girl replied, “Then you ask him.”

••••• A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child’s work.

As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, “I’m drawing God.” The teacher paused and said, “But no one knows what God looks like.”

Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, “They will in a minute.”

New Condos Coming to Vista?

In the latest of a series of multifamily housing developments in Vista, a 54 unit condominium complex appears to have a majority of the Vista City Council in support.

If approved, the development would require the demolition of an existing church, the Christian Science Church, which owns the 3.14 acre propery. Zoning would have to be changed to allow for greater density.

Three of the five council members indicated they would support the zoning change, after looking at the proposal.

Developer Warmington Inc. wants to purchase the land if the zoning can be changed to allow for up to 20 residential units per

Dr. Frank R. Lin of Johns Hopkins and colleagues have been studying hearing loss and how it relates to cognitive decline. This study has been active for over 15 years and has found a direct relationship between the participant’s degree of hearing loss and their risk of later developing dementia or Alzheimer's.

For each 10-decibel loss in hearing the risk of dementia rose about 20% compared to those in the study with normal hearing, the risk doubled among those with mild hearing loss tripled with moderate hearing loss and increased five fold with severe hearing loss.

Hearing Loss is a disability currently untreated in about 85% of those affected. It is a hidden disability often not obvious to others or to those who have it. Yearly we have our eyes checked, teeth cleaned but hearing evaluated? Helen Keller stated that choosing between sight or hearing she would gladly give up her vision

Keeping Kids off Drugs

The costs associated with drug abuse are incalculable.

Broken families, homelessness, rising dropout rates, increasing crime, the costs of law enforcement and incarceration, all factor into the massive drain drug abuse is inflicting on our nation.

Drug abuse is a serious threat to our children.

Unfortunately, according to statistics from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the use of illegal drugs is increasing. In 2013, 9.4 percent of Americans 12 or older had used an illicit drug in the last month. This was an increase over 2002, when the figure was 8.3 percent. The rampant use of prescription drugs like oxycontin among our young people is sadly on the rise as well.

We must do everything we can to keep our kids off drugs by teaching them to "Just Say No to Drugs".

I really enjoyed the article in the October edition. I noticed that the facilities you mentioned for dementia care were all large facilities.

I just want to let you know that Oak Hill Residential has been serving the needs of Escondido and the surrounding communities for almost 30 years. We provide all levels of dementia care including secured units.

We were the 1st residential care facility in San Diego county to be approved for Medi-Cal under the Assisted Living Waiver Program.

Our rates for full care is $3,295.00 and $3,595.00 for secured. These rates for our private paying clients are less than we get from our high care Medi-Cal clients. We do not have any extra charges for care needs and even fix the clients rates for life when they admit to the facility.

The rent includes all nursing care, personal care, laundry, 3 meals and 2 snacks, color TV w/cable at their bed, soaps, linens, shampoo. Our administrator is a Family Nurse Practitioner and we have an MD along with 2 RNs and 1 LVN on staff.

The latter are often referred to as "buy-in" communities, but the actual distinctions go much deeper. I am not the person to accurately describe the differences - - but they are significant and too many persons do not understand the differences.

The fact that none of these characters can be seen from the ground and only the air has left many to believe earth had extra-terrestrial visitors hundreds of years ago. How could they be constructed without a heavenly view?

Other archeologists justify the drawings existence in many other ways. These great figures were drawn between 200 B.C. and 600 A.D. They may have served many functions largely associated with rituals, planting, and the extraction of water from a harsh desert environment. Study of the Nazca people shows them to have been skilled in irrigation, constructing a network of canals that linked the Nazca River with underground waters flowing from the nearby Andes Mountains. Still, how connected these geometric and animal designs are to agriculture or some subterranean water supplies remains

acre. As penciled out, each condo would be three stories, range from three- to four-bedrooms, and include a garage. They would sell in the low-to-mid$400,000 range.

The condos would be one of the few three-story multifamily developments in south Vista.

At its meeting Tuesday, the City Council didn’t vote on the zoning change — the discussion was only advisory for the developer and city staffers.

The three supporters — Mayor Judy Ritter and councilmen John Franklin and John Aguilera — said they were pleased that the plan calls for condos, not apartments.

Councilmembers clearly seem to favor condos over apartment complexes.

Several planning organizations and homeowner organizations appear to favor the proposal as well. There seems to be unanimity on the feeling that condos are far more preferable to apartment complexes both for long term residential ownership as well as maintaining higher property values.

Apartment vacancy rates hover around 3.8 percent in North County, as both rents and housing prices are back on the rise.

The number of parking spots offeredy by the developer may be an issue, however, the City Council’s final vote to OK or reject the Warmington proposal is not expected to come until next summer.

San Marcos Creek District goes Vertical

After decades of dreaming, the vision of creating a downtown is becoming a reality. Two mixed-use development projects— Promenade at Creekside and EastGate—broke ground this summer to mark the first vertical steps of constructing new buildings in the highly anticipated San Marcos Creek District.

The Promenade at Creekside will bring 106 apartment units and 20,000 square feet of commercial space located along Creekside Drive and Grand Avenue directly and EastGate will bring a 42-

unit complex with about 11,600 feet of commercial space in the same area.

Included in the two developments is construction of a new road, Creekside Drive, which will run parallel to San Marcos Boulevard and connect Bent and Grand Avenues at the existing dead-end intersection. By Spring 2016, residents will see expanded sidewalks and bike access, making the area more bike and pedestrian friendly.

When Your PC Starts Acting Up

You know when your PC isn’t running right. It does goofy things. It won’t open some applications or it bogs down on the Internet. Perhaps it refuses to access some sites, buffers streaming videos or just runs way to slow. It used to boot up in less than a minute and now you can make a pot of coffee while it’s running start-up. Sure, you can still use it, but it takes twice as long to do anything. It’s driving you crazy but then comes a ray of hope.

Maybe it’s a TV ad or perhaps a pop-up that appears on your screen. It promises to restore your PC to youth and vigor for only $39.99. You resist the temptation for a week, maybe even a month but finally one day, your frustration overcomes your good sense and you bite. Now it’s worse so what are you going to do?

Roy Herald

Roy Herald was born March 16th, 1919, and died September 29th, 2015.

Roy was raised in Prescott, Kansas, the son of a farmer, during the dustbowl era. His family moved to Ca. 73 years ago. He was a tool and dye maker during World War Two.

Roy was invited to a dinner party one day and decided to go. He loved the product that was shown and went to two more dinners. He sold his tools and from then on was in the cookware business! Roy knew that when the family sits down at the table it is a special time!

This is when family members talk about the day and the family grows stronger!

Roy believed in his product and knew he could help fill a basic need! He was active in the business for 60 years! He loved it! He was The Pan Man! He loved his wife, Crystal, for

Usually the problem is corrupt “software.” It’s not very likely that Internet or the telephone services are going to be able to fix your PC so how about having a technician come to you? Unless your problem is site related (home or business network) you’re wasting your time and money with onsite services.

Diagnostics, malware removal, OS (operating system) loading or repair, applications, driver and update loading all require significant, unattended “run time” or “download time.”

That means when repair operations are performed on-site, 90% of the technicians time is spent simply waiting while processes run. By contrast, in the shop a technician will be working to repair other PCs while your PC is running diagnoses, scans, updates, programs and drivers.

With thirteen stations, each of our technicians tends four to eight other PCs while yours is in process.

Our hourly rate is $60 so the standard clean-up costs only $90.

Obviously on-site tech services like Best Buys “Geek Squad” cannot do the kind of job on site that we do in our shop. If they did they’d be there overnight and would need to charge you over a thousand dollars. As it is, they charge a couple of hundred dollars for a “quickie” on-site cleanup. It’s not worth it.

We’ve often been asked why we

don’t offer remote technical service.

It’s simple.

Remote Internet/phone services plans typically don’t work very well. The companies and individuals that offer remote services have high customer dissatisfaction rates and lots of turnover. That’s OK with them. Their customers are simply numbers and they never come face to face. So even if remote service was satisfactory for 75% of users (which it isn’t), the 25% dissatisfaction rate would keep us up nights.

So when your PC starts to act up, just heave a heavy sigh, unplug it and bring it in. You’ll save time and money in the long run.

The process for a simple malware cleanup is as follows. Remove and test the hard drive, then move it to first scan station (Panda), then to second scan station (Kaspersky), then to third station (Avira/Avast) if necessary. The hard drive is then reinstalled in the customer’s PC and Windows repair is run. Then malware scans are installed and run.

Finally the Windows OS is evaluated. If the OS is OK, the clean-up is complete and the customer is called to come get their PC. This

Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.”

That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.

“The Disc Itself Is Active Tissue...”

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.

The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

Symptoms Are NOT The Problem

Now the symptoms of pain, numbness,

You could spray paint the leaves green but it just covers up the condition. The underlying problem still exists and will continue to produce brown leaves until you fix the actual problem. and tingling that most experience with bulging, herniated or degenerative discs are NOT the problem. The definition of a symptom: “something that indicates the existence of something else.” It is just like the dashboard of your car telling you that something is wrong (brake lights out, engine needs checked, overheating, etc.) Those lights that appear in your car dash are NOT the problem. You can remove the lights surgically or put a piece of duct tape over the lights but the problem will NOT be fixed...the problem is still present.
