There is an amusing story where a young school boy inquires of his father: “Dad, what is the difference between theory and fact?”
Only too happy to help in his son’s education, his father answers this way: “Son, I will give you an example between theory and fact. Go into the kitchen and ask your mother and your older sister if they – truthfully – would sleep with a total stranger for $20-million.” Soon after, his son returns and tells The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

his father: “Dad, they both said – truthfully – that yes, for $20-million, they would definitely sleep with a stranger.” The father looks at his son and says: “Okay Son, in theory we have $20million. In fact, we have two prostitutes in the kitchen!” And so it remains today in 2018 with the Halloween time of year and the paranormal topic of ghosts and things that go “bump in the night.” Are ghosts just a theory or are they real?
The subject of ghost phenomena cannot (truly) be verified scientifically, nor can it be dismissed by the same criteria. If one believes in ghosts or not is, of course, a matter of individuality, religious upbringing, and many other socio, spiritual, and psychological factors. But one thing can be said with reasonable certainty, nearly 50% of all Americans do, in fact, believe in ghosts. And that number of ghostbelievers is increasing substantially every year. In fact, according the latest 2018 research findings, these numbers of ‘ghost-believers’ has doubled in a decade.
San Diego County has often been referred to as “The Most Haunted Place in America,” and not without reason. Or at least not without wide-spread allegations. Such a dubious distinction would place San Diego alongside such noteworthy spooky adversaries as Salem, Massachusetts; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; New Orleans, Louisiana; Galveston, Texas; and San Francisco, California, to name just a few ghostly contenders to the throne. The grisly history of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, certainly places it

among the Top 10 List. As writer and ghost expert, Angela Nightingale, states: “During the Civil War, thousands of soldiers were wounded or killed on the Gettysburg Battlefield. There was so much spilled blood that medical personnel created holes in the floors in order to drain it. Several streets and homes near this historic battlefield have reports of ghostly sights from this historic and fatal event.” Yet, in Nightingale’s “10 Most Haunted Cities in America,” she ranks Gettysburg as No. 7 on the Top 10 List. She, frightfully, places San Diego County as a much more haunted city – by far!
Unlike Gettysburg and other ghostly areas, San Diego has an unusually high number of so-called haunted places – far more than most other cities combined. For both ghost hunters and paranormal scientists, San Diego County has long ruled supreme as being the most haunted city in America, or so it has been said. Film crews and researchers from around the globe have found San Diego to be, well, out-of-this-world. An unusually wide spectrum of historical documentaries, science-fiction shows, and even television’s “Paranormal Files” have found the ghostly feeding-trough in San Diego to be unending.
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy! Four worms and a lesson to be learned!
A minister decided that a visual demonstration would add emphasis to his Sunday sermon. > > Four worms were placed into four separate jars. > > The first worm was put into a container of alcohol. > > The second worm was put into a container of cigarette smoke. > > The third worm was put into a container of chocolate syrup. > > The fourth worm was put into a container of good clean soil. > > At the conclusion of the sermon, the Minister reported the following results:
Such ghostly curiosity is nothing new to our city. Far from it. As far back as September of 2005, LIFE magazine sent prize-winning photographer, Kevin Cooley, to capture three stunning photographs of the Whaley House for their October 21 national issue. LIFE magazine referred to San Diego’s Whaley House, in Old Town, as: “The most haunted house in America!”
tors call America’s most haunted geographical area -- San Diego County. But, this time, let’s take a fresher look at some old familiar places as well as some undiscovered ones that just might surprise you.
More recently, in 2014, San Diego’s Whaley House was the top story on the popular television series, “Ghost Adventures,” making the show’s 110th episode among the most popular for television viewers. No small feat when one considers that the Ghost Adventures’ TV crew travel worldwide, visiting the scariest and most haunted places in the world.
THE HOTEL DEL CORONADO. Certainly, one of San Diego County’s most reputed places of ghosts, poltergeists, and phantoms, is the world-renowned Hotel Del Coronado. However, the legend and lore of the hotel is so gargantuan on its own merits as to even overshadow any ghostly connections. When the colossal Hotel Del Coronado first opened its doors in 1888, it was the largest resort hotel on planet Earth, and one of the largest wooden structures in the entire United States (it was built without the use of any nails – wooden pegs were used instead). The fame of ‘The Del’ (as she is affectionately known), is so overwhelming that since she made her historic debut 130 years ago, multiple U. S. Presidents have visited her, with President Benjamin Harrison being the first on April 23, 1891. Since then the list of American presidents visiting the now world-famous landmark seemed non-stop from William Taft to FDR to Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, both Bushes and so forth. More recently, former First Lady Michelle Obama visited along with her two daughters, Malia and Sasha.

And that assessment was nothing new.
So widespread and powerfullypopular is this haunted San Diego dwelling, that the Whaley House was actually mentioned in the 2007 animated movie, “Hellboy: Blood and Iron.” And in 2012, the film studio, “Asylum,” premiered the movie titled, “The Haunting of Whaley House,” which further entrenched its pervasive spooky status. The Whaley House’s ghostly history, legend, and lore were used as the fundamental story line of the movie.
So, let’s take a closer – and spookier -- look at what many investiga-

The Del was also among the first hotels to utilize that other-worldly invention, called electrical lighting. To many rural residents of the time, such artificial illumination by electricity was even spookier than, well, spooky spirits. Perhaps this early lighting system would prove fortuitous to better see any ghosts which, supposedly, still haunt this magnificent structure that has been, officially, designated a National Historic Landmark. Speaking of ghosts and things that go bump in the night, one of the more high-profile episodes was said to have occurred in May of 1983, when then Vice-President George H. W. Bush (the elder), paid an official visit to San Diego and decided to bed-down at the historic Hotel Del Coronado. The U. S. Secret Service agents are, traditionally, fearless. However, perhaps their fearlessness only extends to earthly parameters. While George Bush slept serenely, one of his agents most definitely did not. Unknown to him at the time, the agent was placed in what is now reputed to be one of the most haunted rooms at

Beer contains female hormones. Last month, Sydney University and CSIRO scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer. Men should take a concerned look at their beer consumption.
The theory is that beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women. To test the theory, 100 men drank 8

the Hotel Del Coronado. A room that has long been investigated by various television shows and paranormal scientists for its alleged unearthly manifestations.
On this particular night, George Bush’s poor Secret Service man had to get out of a warm bed to try to shut the windows of his room when the curtains kept billowing outward, resembling somewhat, a Victorianstyle dress, all of which was distracting him from sleep. He decided that he had to close the windows to stifle the incoming wind. To his great surprise, the secret agent found his windows were already tightly shut. Things got spookier.
A breeze kept chilling his room and strange guttural sounds began to emerge from nowhere. The final straw came when the Secret Service man, purportedly, became startled when he saw the ceiling of his room suddenly immersed in an eerie glow that slowly spread throughout his room. It was then, as recorded, that the Secret Service agent called the check-in reception desk, complaining of various unexplained events in his room, not the least of which were loud noises in the room above him, during the night. When told there was no other room above him because he was already occupying the top floor – he immediately requested to be moved to another

The first room the agent was placed in is, allegedly, haunted by the ghost of Kate Morgan, alias Lottie Bernard (or Barnard) after she committed suicide from a single .44 caliber gunshot to her right temple, on November 24, 1892. According to the official coroner’s report, she is described – in addition to her height, weight, etc. – as very beautiful. To this day, many have claimed to have seen a stunningly beautiful woman gliding about in ghostly form. Her apparition is often referred to as “The Beautiful Stranger,” Kate Morgan’s otherworldly nickname.
Aside from Kate Morgan, there was another woman who committed suicide prior to 1900 and she, also, has been said to occasionally materialize in ghostly form, sometimes frightening the hotel staff. One maid gives a chilling account when she claimed to have slipped a piece of paper under the door asking if the occupant would like the room cleaned. She says the note was sent back under the door with the reply, “Yes” written on it. When the maid entered the room, she found it completely unoccupied.
location.
To this day, there are many who have claimed to have heard voices, or seen lights flicker on-and-off when her room is unoccupied. Some describe an icy coldness near her room: “Like a draft from a slaughterhouse.” Kate Morgan’s original room number 302 has been changed down through the years due to construction expansion designs – same room location, just different room numbers. Kate Morgan’s room number, currently 3327, is the most requested one at the seaside hotel; so much so that Morgan’s haunted room is now extremely difficult to reserve, sometimes booked months, even years in advance, especially prior to Halloween. Kate Morgan’s body is buried at Mount Hope Cemetery not far from downtown San Diego, but many attest that her spirit never,
indeed, checked out of her hotel room at the Hotel Del Coronado.
In addition to the various hauntings, many have also reported the ghost of a little boy and girl running up-and-down stairwells and hallways, playing. Paranormal investigators classify such manifestations as poltergeists (German word for ‘playful’ or ‘mischievous’ spirits).
Today, it is not unusual for members of the Hotel Del Coronado cleaning crews to request working in pairs, especially when working in dimly-lighted hallways and stairways. The cleaning staff have often reported strange sightings and uneasy feelings of being watched.
In regards to the Hotel Del Coronado and its ghostly connections, the famed hotel does not attempt to hide or suppress any ghostly activity there but, rather, relishes in it. Every year, the seaside resort continues to leave an

The altar, full of “ofrendas”, is the focal point to observing the Día de los Muertos. In Mexico it is built at home and/or at the grave site. Entire families construct altars as an annual commitment. Individuals who wish to build an altar at the event must apply. The day continues with Ballet Folk Lorico and the Rubios groups. Dances and Comparsas are part of the Carnival form the Days of the Dead. And of course the great food, tamales, tortas, tacos, corn/elote, raspados, burritos, mole and so much more. Vendors from all over California will be there to show off their prowess in providing traditional food for the festival, and the desserts to sweeten your palette. Continuing trading, the traditional bread, Pan de Muerto, also known as Bread for the Dead, will be available at the festival. All bread has been made at our local bakery, La Perla Tapatía on Mission Avenue. This wonderful bread has raised areas that resemble bones of the dead – and there lies the start of its name, Pan de Muerto. You too can share in this celebration. EPILOGUE: While George H. W. Bush did not report any ghostly happening at The Del when he stayed there in 1983 as Vice President, years later, his son, would – at the White House. In his book, “Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush” author, Robert Draper, interviewed the sitting president 6 times, and received an unexpected earful. The White House has long been considered haunted and Bush (the younger) found it to be a “creepy place,” as he confessed to the author. President Bush, in 6 formal interviews granted to Draper, recounted a most disturbing paranormal episode. After a hearty workout in the White House gymnasium one evening, Bush suddenly froze in mid-step when he was approaching the Lincoln Bedroom. According to Draper, Bush confessed to a friend that he actually saw, “Ghosts coming out of the wall!” (Pages 87-88 from the book “Dead Certain: The Presidency of George W. Bush,” by Robert Draper, published 2007.)
Bush is not alone, as many sitting presidents, and visiting luminaries, have attested to seeing ghosts at The White House. In a handwritten let-

San Diego Humane Society Takes in 93 Dogs to Create Space for Pets Displaced by Hurricane Michael
San Diego Humane Society received 93 dogs at Gillespie Field on Thursday afternoon. In a collaborative effort with the Humane Society of the United States, they flew in the animals to create space for animals in Florida who have been displaced by Hurricane Michael. After their arrival, the crated dogs were transferred directly to San Diego Humane Society’s San Diego Campus, where a professional team of staff and veterinarians assessed the pets’ health and level of stress and determined when they will be available for adoption.
The incoming pets are not direct victims of Hurricane Michael. They are adoptable dogs who have been in animal shelters in the Florida panhandle area. They were transported to San Diego to create room for pets who

THE JULIAN HOTEL. Julian is a census-designated area of San Diego County with a rich history in California’s Gold Rush era and, like the Hotel Del Coronado, the Julian Hotel (now called The Julian Gold Rush Hotel), is said to be haunted by more than one ghost. But, the similarity ends there. Unlike the Hotel Del, the proprietors of this mountainside resort hotel do not always wish to scare away tenants with tales of poltergeists, which many attest to. Aside from the beautiful Julian Hotel’s boast of being the oldest continuously-operated hotel in Southern California, it may also lay claim to being an equal opportunity employer for, ostensibly, resident ghosts. said that, the primary ghost there is said to be of a black man named, Albert Robinson, who died on June 10, 1915. Well, at least his body died. The historical part of Albert Robinson’s earthly existence is a fascinating study, even without the ghostly aspect. In short, Robinson was a freed slave from Missouri who migrated to Julian, along with his entrepreneurial ‘spirit’ (no pun intended). In Julian, he met his wife and opened up a restaurant, which touted a bakery that made delicious apple pies (sound familiar today?). Robinson’s business flourished and soon became the Hotel Robinson, which had an impressive 14 guest rooms. Impressive indeed, especially when one keeps in mind that he was an uneducated former slave who became a most successful black businessman in early, ultra-conservative America. But the music stopped in 1915 when Robinson died and it was said that the town refused his burial at the all-white cemetery. As legend has it, Robinson’s spirit did not take kindly to this final insult. So – you guessed it – Robinson’s ghost is said to haunt the presently-named Julian Hotel (formerly, the Hotel Robinson). Robinson, allegedly, haunts the Julian Hotel’s room No. 10, where it is said, he once lived. Allegedly, the bed in room 10 is often found to be messed up – unaccountably – after it has been properly made; and the room’s furniture is also reported to be re-arranged in configuration to the way it used to be when he lived there; and the smell of his favorite pipe tobacco

For all you do Mr. Davis, I thank God for you for making this troubled and often divisive world of ours a "happier and safer place." We need more people like you who refuse to just stand on the sidelines and instead get involved.
I truly hope I haven't embarrassed you with my sincere compliments but you truly need to know just how much we the people value, cherish, and are grateful for what you did. seems to linger in his former room. As a poltergeist, he is said to hide small objects found in his room and, when greatly angered, it is said he will slam doors. Some say the other ghosts at the Julian Hotel were laid to rest when an exorcist was brought into town. However, Robinson – the former black slave who, it is said, was refused a proper burial – seems to have taken roost at the very establishment that he helped create, long, long ago. One of life’s ironies is that Robinson hailed from Missouri. Missouri being wellknown as the skeptical “Show Me” state. Robinson has never actually been seen as a ghost, but rumor has it that some visiting Missouri folk believe he’s still there in ghostly form, nonetheless.
THE GRANDE COLONIAL HOTEL. Located in La Jolla, California, this is one of the lesserknown haunted hotels. Or, so it has been said to be haunted. The Grande Colonial Hotel befits its name as an elegant, upscale establishment complete with classic European styling. The hotel’s regal sobriquet is “The Jewel of the Pacific.” The area of the hotel that is attributed to ghostly happenings is near a conference room called “The Sun Room.” Reportedly, heavy footsteps are sometimes heard going up-and-down the staircase. When not walking, some claim that more frightening sounds can be heard of heavy footsteps running, loudly, the entire length of the

pints of beer each within a 1 hour period. It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects:
1) Argued over nothing. 2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong. 3) Gained weight. 4) Talked excessively without making sense. 5) Became overly emotional 6) Couldn't drive. 7) Failed to think rationally. 8) Had to sit down while urinating. No further testing was considered necessary. Send this to the men you know to warn them about drinking too much beer. Today’s Father/Son Talk
A young Arab asks his father, "What is that weird hat you are wearing?"
The father said, "Why, it's a 'chechia' because in the desert it protects our heads from the sun." "And what is this type of clothing that you are wearing?" asked the young man. "It's a 'djbellah' because in the desert it is very hot and it protects the body." said the father.
The son asked, "And what about
stairwell from top to bottom, both directions. These are often accompanied with loud doors slamming, or so it has been reported. Historical records reveal that over 75 years ago this same room and adjacent areas were once used as a temporary military barracks for World War II servicemen. The Grande Colonial Hotel’s own website confirms this: “During the World War II years, the Colonial became home to many of the “top brass” from nearby Camp Callan. While the men were at Camp during the day, their wives volunteered for the local Red Cross. At night, the hotel’s sunroom was partitioned to create accommodations for single servicemen.” THE WHALEY HOUSE. Most San Diegans know of this place, located in San Diego’s historic district called Old Town. But, there may be much we do not know of the Whaley House and its, purported, ghostly affiliations.
There are countless places, houses, cemeteries, etc, that are said to have rather disturbing supernatural occurrences, such as: San Jose’ Winchester House, San Simeon’s Hearst Castle, the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood’s world-famous Magic Castle, and so on. But, the ghostly legends at the Whaley House take a backseat to no other. If we are to believe the Travel Channel’s quest for

His father replied, "These are 'babouches", which keep us from burning our feet in the desert." " Tell me," added the boy. "Yes, my son?"
"Why are we living in Dearborn, Michigan and you’re still wearing all this crap?” Bosses Day
What a joke, I thought. I came into the office . . . no one said a word.
Later on in the morning I got a phone call from a rather attractive client, suggesting I meet her for an early lunch. I agreed.
We went to an out of the way restaurant I had never known about. Superb meal and service. After the lunch she asked if I could run by her apartment for a few minutes as she had some items that needed tending to. I agreed. Upon arrival she gave me a glass of wine and told me to make myself comfortable. I finished my wine during a very nice and warm chat. She poured another glass, winked at me and said she'd be right back . . . she wanted to "slip into something

“America’s Most Haunted,” then one would have to say the Whaley House is – at least in their findings – the most haunted of all! Mighty big claim to make. But, there are many ghost hunters, and paranormal investigators who totally agree with that nebulous statement.
Best bet is to take one of the historic tours at the Whaley House, preferably before nightfall (unless you are one of the heartier souls who doesn’t frighten easily). There is just too much history surrounding the place to be presented here (much of which was already mentioned at the top of this story), but a thumbnail sketch will be attempted. In addition to serving as the Whaley Family home, the structure used to be many other things: granary, County Court House, commercial theatre, general store, ballroom, school, polling place, billiard hall, etc. In the realm of ghostly happenings, these past functions of the Whaley House are essentials because the more variety of human traffic through a common area often, but not always, results in the greater intensity of ghosts lingering for different reasons. Or so it has been said. One unsettling fact is, similar to the movie “Poltergeist,” the Whaley House was built where a graveyard once was.
Since it was first opened as a museum in 1960, it has become a significant California State Historic Landmark #65. Earliest reputed ghost at the Whaley House is “Yankee Jim” James Robinson (aka as Santiago), who was hanged on a gallows off the back of a wagon in 1852, on the site where the Whaley House now sits. Yankee Jim did his utmost best to prolong the proceedings. According to the then, San Diego Union newspaper in 1873, (recalling the incident 21 years prior): “Yankee Jim kept his feet in the wagon as long as possible, but was finally pulled off. He swung back and forth like a pendulum until he was strangled to death.” Regarding the Whaley House, the San Diego Union reported, “Soon after the couple (Thomas and Anna Whaley) and their children moved in, heavy footsteps were heard moving about the house.” Windows were also known to unlatch and fly up. In later years, various Whaley family members continued – some say – to stay and haunt their own house. The spirits of original house owners, Thomas Whaley and his wife, Anna, have often been reported. Anna Whaley’s ghostly form is often seen in the downstairs rooms or in the garden area. In 1964, Mrs. Whaley’s floating, drifting spirit, allegedly, appeared to television personality, Regis Philbin. According to Philbin’s own words, “All of a sudden I noticed something on the wall. There was something filmy white. It looked like an apparition of some kind. I got so excited I couldn’t restrain myself! I flipped on the flashlight and noth-
ing was there but a portrait of Anna Whaley, the long-dead mistress of the house.”
One parapsychologist claimed to have seen a spotted dog, resembling a fox terrier, running around the house. He said the dog was an apparition. Whether this is true or not, historical records reveal that the Whaley family owned a terrier dog, named Dolly Varden.
As with other world-renowned publications, the mighty Time Magazine could no longer ignore the gargantuan haunted status of San Diego’s Whaley House. In 2008, the lofty New York print giant buckled under pressure and TIME magazine issued its own Top 10 Haunted Places: “From wartorn battlefields to creaky mansions and ghostly ships, TIME looks at the lore behind the world’s most haunted places.” At the top of TIME magazine’s list sat San Diego County, a most spooky coronation.
Even elite U. S. Government skeptics were forced to give a cursory glance at a most controversial subject that most Americans already knew. Finally, it had to happen. The U. S. Commerce Department classified San Diego’s Whaley House as “allegedly” haunted. “Allegedly” was as close as they could acquiesce to, on such a nebulous, unproved subject. Today, the San Diego Whaley House Museum offers Guided Group Tours and Private After Hour Tours. On their calendar of events, they even offer “Ghost Hunting Tours.”
For added information, the Whaley House Museum can be reached at: (619) 297-7511. Or you can visit their official website at: whaleyhouse.org/hauntedfolklore.htm for an overview of their 2018 Tours & Events Calendar.
There are many other, supposedly, haunted areas in San Diego County that could not all be mentioned here, such as Mt. Helix, the Point Loma Lighthouse, and the Del Mar Racetrack, once the playground of Hollywood’s past stars such as Walt Disney, Mickey Rooney, Bob Hope, Desi Arnaz and Lucille Ball, and many other notables, including founding fathers, Bing Crosby, Pat O’Brien, et al. All these glittering array of past movie stars used to stay late, after hours, when the famed seaside track was closed after a day of horse racing, and they would party way into the night, with famed comedian, Jimmy Durante often playing the piano. It is during these late, isolated dark hours, today, that many ground keepers and workers often attest to seeing and hearing strange, supposedly, supernatural things at the Del Mar Racetrack. There are countless other San Diego regions that are said to have

Affordable California?
Are you upset about the high cost of living in California? Some call it the `Sunshine Tax,’ the price we pay to live here. But that price has become unbearable and our families, seniors and students are struggling to make ends meet.
Housing costs are a major factor. Depending on where you live, government fees and regulations can increase the cost of a new home by $50 to $150 thousand per unit, and permitting can take years, costing additional thousands. How can we even begin to discuss affordable housing without taking a serious look at costs imposed by government?
California’s excessive taxes add to the burden. Our gas, sales and corporation taxes are among the nation’s highest, hurting hardworking Californians. But even more taxes may be on the way. There are serious proposals to tax water and to tax the miles we drive commuting to work. All this – even though the state has a $9 billion surplus. And please, the `Sunshine Tax’ is just a figure of speech. Hopefully it won’t be included in the plethora of new tax bills likely to be introduced in January.

extremely high paranormal activity. To psychic investigators, this is not surprising since much of San Diego County was home to the original prehistoric inhabitants, the Luiseno and the Kumeyaay Native Americans, whose ancestral rites and religious ceremonies trace back 13,000 years or more.
There is no stopping the national revelry and unabashed love-affair Americans – and the world – seem to have with the ghostly Halloween tradition. A pagan holiday which has Americans spending almost $7billion annually, making Halloween and ghosts and the paranormal the most popular celebration, second only to Christmas.
Such worldwide popularity with the occult, black cats, witches, and phantoms, has long been a thorn in the side of Christianity. Such an observance and fascination from humans around the world is not likely to ever go away. Rather, it is growing exponentially. It remains an intriguing love-affair which arrives annually like a loud, boisterous uncle through the front door without pretense or apology.
A comedian once said Americans believe in ghosts more than they believe that there will be Social Security checks waiting for them when they retire.
Hmm. I don’t know which part of that statement is scarier, the ghost part or the part about Social Security checks. Have a safe, fun 2018 Halloween celebration.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow
Japan gave up on Aug. 14, 1945. The War officially ended on Sept. 2, 1945, with the formal surrender of the Empire of Japan on the deck of the battleship USS Missouri.
It is estimated that approximately 62 million people died in the war. Most of the casualties were civilians as a result of the large-scale Allied aerial bombing of cities, disease, starvation, and Hitler’s Holocaust genocide. It also is estimated the Soviet Union, alone, suffered more than 25 million deaths; China lost some 10 million of its citizens.
From Depression to War
The second World War was the largest and most deadly global military conflict in recorded history. It was the defining seven-year period of the 20th century – certainly the most important event in U.S. history. During the thirties, America and much of the world suffered from a stifling depression. At one point nearly half of the working-age adults was unemployed. Only those who lived through it can ever know it’s dramatic affect. In the late part of the decade, America quickly moved from an agrarian society to that of a powerful industrial complex.
For the Allied nations of the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, and the United States, some 17 million military and 35 million civilians were killed. For the Axis Powers, 8 million military and 4 million civilians were killed. The United States had more than 16 million in the uniform services; many more worked in wartime factories producing planes, guns, tanks, bombs and ammunition. The U.S. lost more than
In the mid-thirties America’s military force was minuscule. Less than 150,000 men served in the Army, which was ranked 16th largest in the world. Most of today’s generations weren’t alive when World War II occurred and have little knowledge of what caused it. Here’s a “thumbnail” sketch of what and how it happened.
The War historically began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, drawing in the Polish allies of the United Kingdom and France. But, students of history should never forget that as early as 1937 the Japanese were invading China, killing thousands. Japan’s action could be interpreted as the beginning of World War II. What began as a territorial conflict in Eastern Europe spread quickly to Western Europe and beyond. In the Pacific, Japan captured dozens of islands and then attacked the U.S. installations in the Philippine Islands, Alaska, and Hawaii.
Germany was joined by Italy and Japan, with other fascist allies such as Austria, Rumania, Czechoslovakia, and Bulgaria. This confederation was known as the “Axis Powers.” In 1940, Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader in Germany, had signed a “non-aggression” treaty with the Soviet Union. When Germany invaded Poland from the west, Russia invaded from the east. Then in June 1941 Germany violated its treaty and invaded Russia. On Dec. 7, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, various U.S. bases in the Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island, and then landed a force on Attu, in Alaska’s Aleutian islands.
As the War dragged on, Italian forces collapsed, surrendered, and then in 1943, joined the Allies. On May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered, then
600,000 military personnel. While there are many reasons declared as the causes of World War II, these aspects stand out: nationalistic control of vast geographic regions, and the natural resources those nations possess – namely oil. Japan, Germany, and Italy needed the natural resources of others to maintain their imperialistic goals.
In Europe, the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I, with an Allied Powers victory, was perceived by Germany as unjust. Essentially, it stripped that nation of much of its natural resources and burdened it with nearly unsustainable cash payments to its former enemies. This resentment fueled the success of the militarist Nazi Party. Hitler and the Nazis succeeded beyond their wildest expectations primarily due to the economic conditions created by the worldwide Great Depression of the 1930s. The power the Nazis gained allowed them to re-arm Germany, launching Hitler on his blood-thirsty rampage. The strength of today’s United States was forged by the challenges we faced during World War II. Ironically, the one primary thing that ended the war is what has kept belligerent nations from causing another global conflict: nuclear weapons.

He was transferred to Rancho Coastal Humane Society from another shelter through the FOCAS program.
The $145 adoption fee for Huckleberry includes medical exams, vaccinations, spay, and registered microchip. For more information call 760-753-6413, visit Rancho Coastal Humane Society at 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas, or log on to SDpets.org.

I was in the elevator when that busty lady got in. I was staring at her boobs, when she said, would you please press 1..? So I did. I don't remember much afterwards....Recovery time 4 - 6 week.
When Evelyn and I go out to a party she lets me do all the talking. She just does all the contradicting. Long time ago, I had a blonde girlfriend. She said she was a candidate for Mensa. I decided to test her. "If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it? She responded, "Is it on or off?"

sluice the lighter overburden out of the pan. My personal efforts resulted in $20 worth of gold. You do the math. It wasn’t much. Sometimes when a person comes to faith in Jesus Christ, there is a lot of overburden. The rocks, dirt, mud and slime of a sinful life have accumulated over time and hidden the valuable gold that is the person that God created you to be.

Pastor Tom Fry (Retired) Church of he Nazarrene Overburden and Washing
Touring Alaska and the Yukon territory this summer, I learned a lot about finding gold. The Klondike gold rushers got their gold by the same methods as the California gold rushers. They panned, they sluiced and they dredged.
The gold was hidden in dirt, rock, mud, slime and other things that the miners called “overburden.” It had to be shaken, washed, and dredged to get to the paydirt and the gold. We panned gold one day and worked hard, shaking, coercing, swirling the water across the overburden to get the heavier gold to sink to the bottom of the pan and to
It takes a skillful hand to wash out the overburden and preserve the gold, edging toward the bottom of the pan. Too slow and you’ll never get done; too fast and you’ll wash out the gold with the mud and rocks. God gently shakes our life, sifting and sorting through the overburden, the junk that hides our real value, our true person. But it is not water that rushes across the overburden. It is the blood of Jesus Christ, spilled on the cross, for your sins and for mine.
The Bible, in 1 Peter 1:2, says that we are cleansed by the blood of Christ. 1 John 1:7 says that the blood of Jesus purifies us from all sin. In verse 9, it says we are cleansed from all unrighteousness. The overburden is washed away, the gold remains. God is a joyous gold miner.

Safety reminders for the Halloween season
As you get ready for trick-or-treating this Halloween, please keep in mind these safety reminders: • Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled flame-resistant or flame-retardant. • If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eyeholes are large enough so they can see out. • Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting. • Keep dried flowers, cornstalks and other decorations away from all open flame and heat sources. • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, ensuring nothing blocks escape routes
• Use flashlights or batteryoperated candles when illuminating Jack-o-lanterns • Do not allow children to carry sharp sticks or other objects that could cause injury • When in doubt, throw it out— closely inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. Discard any unwrapped treats from a stranger. • Young children should be accompanied by a trusted adult and walk from house to house on sidewalks when available. Halloween should be fun and safe for everyone and planning ahead can help make the festivities safe.

lights and any exterior lights on. • Do not give homemade or unwrapped treats to children. • Use extreme caution when driving a vehicle. Be on the alert for youngsters darting out into traffic. • Costumes should be flame retardant so children aren't in danger near burning jack-o-lanterns. • Keep costumes short to prevent trips, falls, and other bumps in the night. • Try make-up instead of a mask. Masks can obstruct a child's vision. • Make sure kids wear light colors or put reflective tape on costumes for increased visibility.

No More Plastic Straws!
Assembly Bill 1884 was signed into law by Governor Brown. This measure limits restaurants to giving out single-use straws only upon request of customers. It applies to full service restaurants, which primarily means restaurants with in-house dining. The new law is scheduled to go into effect January 1 and restaurants violating this new law could be subject to
a fine of $25 per day and as much as $300 annually.
With the passage of this bill, California now becomes the first in the nation to restrict the use of plastic straws in restaurants. Making straws available upon request may make customers think of alternatives to reduce and possibly eliminate single-use plastic products.

Having a notebook or desktop PC tucked away in some quiet corner of your home is a great comfort and convenience. Sure, you can do just about anything on your smart phone or tablet, but there is nothing like sitting down in a comfortable chair in front of a nice big screen with both hands free to manipulate your mouse and access a real keyboard. Shopping, banking, researching, learning, emailing and staying up to date with your family and friends through social media; all this can be done with your touch-screen smart phone on a post card size screen, but do you really want to? Internet shopping and fulfillment as pioneered by Amazon is one of the best reasons for having a comfortable home workstation. Internet shopping has drastically altered retail commerce over the past decade. Storefronts in shopping centers across America stand empty. Planners of modern housing projects assumed that street level storefronts filled with boutique businesses would help support low cost housing on the floors above. It’s not working because the Internet has devastated boutique businesses. Just look at all the empty storefronts along Creekside Drive, San Marcos’ newest housing project.
The Computer Factory, the Internet has been a blessing. For the distributors that we once used to fill our components needs it has been a disaster. As a business we enjoy wholesale pricing, free shipping and outstanding service. We have minimal inventory commitment and no minimum order or shipping schedule restraints. The products we buy are in support of our upgrade and repair service. We don’t rely on component resale as a significant revenue producer. We encourage our customers to bring in their own components and we’ll do the labor. Internet shopping and fulfillment simply makes economic sense and it has a lot of room to keep growing for years to come. Amazon fulfillment centers are marvels of engineering design and efficiency. Critics complain that they are causing the loss of
jobs in retail sales, and they are. They are also reducing the cost of buying nearly everything and the cost of driving to and from brick and mortar stores. Taken as a whole, the Internet shopping revolution is reducing the cost of living through efficiency. That costs jobs, but so has every major advancement in technology. Steam, electricity, solar energy, the internal combustion engine, all these thing cost jobs. But they also freed people from doing things inefficiently and allowed them to move on to more productive labor. To disabuse yourself of the notion that E-commerce is replacing highly trained, skilled labor in retail operations across the country you need only to strike up a conversation with one of those laid-off Best Buy sales clerks, dude.
General merchandise giants like Sears and electronics chains like Comp USA and Good Guys have been pushed to the point of extinction. Best Buy, Staples, Wal-Mart and others have had to reduce margins and change their business strategy by price matching or becoming pick-up locations for Internet shoppers. Our neighborhood Fry’s is suffering. Price matching has hurt profitability, caused major customer conflicts and negatively affected employee commissions. We don’t think they’ll be around in 2020.
