Editor’s Note: This is one of a series of journal entries dictated by James P. Beckwourth, an adventurer, explorer, scout, hunter, trapper, pioneer, emigrant and, for a time, Indian Chief of the Crows.
The narrative is almost amusing in that hardy pioneers did not really talk in such elegant terms. Clearly, T. D. Bonner, who writes this biography, has exercised considerable ‘poetic license’ in describing the adventures in such elegant prose. Here, then, more in the continuing saga describing the trek out West by James P. Beckwourth: Departure from Fort Cass. — Capture of Squaws. —Battle with the Black Feet; with the Cheyennes. —Great Success of the Crows in stealing Horses. —A successful Fall for Beaver. —Return to the Fort with Peltry.
AFTER having arranged every thing in the fort (which I have forgotten to mention we named after Mr. Cass), and given all instructions to Winters, who was in charge, I again left. My intention

was to induce the Crows to devote their undivided attention to trapping, not alone for their own benefit, but for the interest of my emplying company. I knew that if I was with them they would capture five beavers to one if left to themselves. I had obtained great influence in the medicine lodge, and could often exert it to prevent a war-party from making a useless excursion against their enemies. I would tell them in their council that my medicine told me not to go to war; that it was to their interest to employ their warriors in trapping all the beavers possible, so that they might have the means of purchasing ammunition and weapons for themselves, as well as beads, scarlet cloth, and blankets for the women; that by-and-by we should be attacked by the enemy, and be unprovided with the means of defense; that they would then kill all our warriors, and make captives of our women and children, as the Cheyennes had captured my mother when I was an infant, many winters gone; that they should save all their warriors against a time of need, and only engage in war when the safety of their village was at stake. These representations would frequently dissuade them from their
belligerent purpose, and beaverskins would be brought into the village by the pack; but they would soon tire of their pacific occupation, and their enemies' horses would offer them temptations which they could not resist. Nearly all the Crows having left the fort before I did, only a few warriors remained to bear me company. I engaged to meet them at the mouth of the Little Horn within a given number of nights, and I knew I should be expected. We arrived in safety at the place appointed, and within the time I had specified. Soon after our arrival, it was proposed to send out a war-party, not so much to fight as to reconnoitre; to see where horses could with least difficulty be procured, and gain a general intelligence of how matters stood. We set out, and had traveled slowly along for nearly two weeks, when our scouts returned to apprise us that there was a large crowd of women approaching toward us. We were then in a forest of plum-trees, bearing large red plums, which were fully ripe, and were very delicious. Feeling satisfied that the women were coming to gather fruit, we secreted ourselves, intending, at a given signal, to
surround them while they were busily employed. Accordingly, we waited until they all set themselves about their task, they keeping up an incessant jabber among themselves and having no suspicion that the Crows would so soon come in for their share. At a sound from the whistle, they were entirely surrounded, and their merry chatter was hushed in an instant. We marched them to an open piece of ground, made them form a line, and proceeded to make selection. The aged, the illfavored, and the matrons we withdrew from the body, telling them to return to the village, and depart. They went away in sullenness, with their eyes flashing fire. The remainder, to the number of fifty-nine, very attractive looking young women, we carried along with us; and as we were but three miles distant from their village, and could plainly see the smoke of their lodges, we deemed it prudent to lose no time in making our way home. There were three warriors in the company of the women when first descried, but they were not inclosed in our surround, and we could find no traces of them in any direction. On our return toward home the captives were, as usual, gloomy for an hour or two; but they very

quickly brightened, and amused us with their smiles and conversation during the whole of the journey. In four days we reached the village, and were received with "thunders of applause." Four of the prisoners were adjudged my prizes, who, according to Indian customs, became my sisters. For my services in this expedition I was honored with the name of Boah-hish-a (Red Fish). Our prisoners were kindly received, and treated with becoming attention. I carried my four sisters to my lodge, and distributed them among my relatives. They were all married to Crow braves, and added materially to the strength of my band of relatives; for it is esteemed a great honor to marry the sister of a great brave, which appellation I had long borne.
Pine Leaf had captured two prisoners, and offered me one of them to wife. I answered, "You once told me I had already wives enough. I will not add to their number until I marry the heroine of the Crow nation." "Ah, you have found the red-handed Indian, then," she said, laughing mockingly. She always received my advances with this unsatisfactory nonchalance, that it was with some unpleasantness of feeling I approached the subject. But the more I saw of her lofty bearing, and witnessed the heroic deeds

that she performed, the more ardent became my attachment to her. When she was by my side in battle, it seemed as if I had increased strength and courage; when she was away, which happened rarely, I felt a vacancy which no other warrior could supply. There was none bolder than herself, and she knew it; there were others of greater strength, but her deficiency in muscular power was more than indemnified by her cat-like agility, and she would kill her man while others where preparing to attack. There was one thing that irritated the noble girl's curiosity, and that was the war-path secret. Having killed many in battle, having followed where any dared to lead, "Why am I debarred from that important communication?" she would ask. "Why am I sent off with the women and children, when that secret is told the warriors of but one battle?" I would tell her that the misfortune of her sex rendered it impossible that she could ever have the secret unveiled to her; that, should she break her trust, she would surely pay the forfeit with her life. She would become angry at such representations, and her black eyes would glow like fire. Soon after this capture, a band of Black Feet made reprisals by breaking our enclosure and taking seven hundred horses. I immediately collected a small party and went in pursuit. We speedily overtook them, and recovered all the horses except sixty, bearing the enemy, who

precipitately fled, leaving two of their party dead. On our return we were received with the usual demonstrations of joy, and the horse-dance was performed by the village, together with the scalpdance, which lasted nearly all night.
About this time my allied friend raised a war-party, and went in quest of the enemy; the heroine, ever active and prepared, accompanying him. I staid behind. They returned in a few days, bringing eight scalps of the Coutnees — one of the bands of the Black Feet. They had lost two of their warriors, much to the annoyance of the heroine, as she was prevented from dancing, although she had counted two coups. She then declared that she would go to war no more, except in my company; but she had to break her word, and the next time she engaged in fight she received a severe wound. She wished me to raise a force immediately, and go and kill an enemy, so that she could wash her face. I declined, however, on the ground that I was soon to go to the fort, and that I would engage in no hostile encounters until my return. When a war party loses one of its members, the survivors are compelled to wear their mourningpaint, until that same party, or an individual member of it, has wiped out the blot by killing one of the enemy without incurring loss of life. Thus it not unfrequently happens, when no opportunity of avenging a loss occurs, that the mourners wear paint for months, regularly renewing it as

Small parties were continually going out and returning with varying success. The grand total of horses stolen by the Crows from all other tribes during that year amounted to near six thousand head. During the same period, however, they lost a great number stolen from them.
I visited the fort again in October, with three hundred lodges of the Indians, the remainder following us in a few days. A great number of the Indians had been busy with their traps for about two months, and we took into the fort a great quantity of peltry, which procured for the Indians every thing they needed, besides finery for the women. When I arrived, I was informed that the head-hunter of the fort had been killed during my absence.

them in four nights. Then, as soon as I could get ready, I loaded twelve pack-horses with goods for retail, and, taking two Canadians with me, I went on and joined the village at the appointed place. This much performed, I then attended to the frequent solicitations of the heroine, by leading a party, and going in pursuit of the Black Feet to chastise them, as I told the Crows, for killing the white hunter. We were absent eleven days, and returned with only four scalps and seventy-four horses. I received an arrow in my head; and there were three other warriors wounded, but none killed. The heroine then washed her face of the mourning paint, which she had been grieving about so long.
At this time I was third counselor of the nation, having been fifth and fourth previously. In the Crow nation there are six counselors, and by them the nation is ruled. There are also two head chiefs, who sit with the counsel whenever it is in session. The office of first counselor is the highest in the nation, next to the head chiefs, whose authority is equal. If in any of these divisions, when a matter is brought to the vote, the suffrages are equal, one of the old pipe-men is summoned before the council, and the subject under discussion is stated to him, with the substance of the arguments advanced on both sides; after hearing this he gives his casting vote, and the question is finally settled. When war is declared on any tribe, it is done by the council. If any party goes out without the authority of the council, they are all severely whipped; and their whipping is no light matter, as I can personally testify. It makes no difference how high the offender ranks, or how great his popularity with the nation — there is no favor shown; the man who disobeys orders is bound to be lashed, and if he resists or resents the punishment, he suffers death.
We raised a war-party of three hundred men to act against the Cheyennes, having one of the head chiefs as leader. We moved on foot toward their country, which was about two hundred and fifty miles from our village. In this expedition I acted in the capacity of head spy, and was of necessity continually in advance of the main party. Being near the enemy, according to our calculations, I was some distance ahead, with four other spies, when we discovered five of the Cheyenne warriors in the act of dressing a buffalo, which they had just killed. We crept slyly up within gunshot of them, and each singled out his man and fired. Four fell at the discharge; the other mounted his horse and fled. I mounted one of the other horses, and pursued him within sight of his village, when I wheeled and returned to the camp, well knowing that we should be pursued immediately after the fugitive communicated his news. I found the camp readily, and acquainted the chief with what had happened, although it is
against orders for spies to commence any attack. I told him that we were compelled to fight them to save our own lives, as the enemy had discovered us. "That is all right," he said, "but they will be soon after us, and we must retreat as fast as we can."
We returned on our steps without losing a moment, and traveled all night. It was very cold, with considerable snow on the ground. In the morning we built a fire, and as soon as we had warmed ourselves we moved on. One man, who was lame, lingered by the fire after we had left, and he rejoined us in great alarm, telling us that the Cheyennes were on our trail in great force, and were but a short distance behind us. We then put our boys and horses into a deep gully close by, and also stepped in ourselves, as soon as we had discharged one volley at our pursuers, who were then within short gunshot distance. They numbered from fifteen hundred to two thousand warriors, all mounted, while we were but a very few warriors, and had not more than a dozen horses in all. We were in a strong position, however, one which they dared not to storm, even with their whole force. Frequently a few more daring cavaliers would advance to the edge of the bank, and hurl their lances into our midst; but they rarely escaped our bullets. We had killed and wounded a great number in this manner, which taught our foe to be more cautious in his approaches; when our chief, losing heart, declared there was no hope for us, and that we infallibly should be all "rubbed out." He addressed his son, a lad about sixteen years of age, in the following strain: "My son, we shall be all killed here. The Cheyennes are very brave, and they have a cloud of warriors before us. It must never be said that my son was killed by them, therefore I must kill you myself before I die. Die, my son, first!" In an instant his son was a corpse, prostrate at the feet of his savage father. This, thought I, is the first time I ever saw a person killed to save his life. The actions of the old chief were wild throughout the whole proceeding. After killing his son, he rushed upon the top of the bank, and addressed himself to the enemy, an exposed mark to their arrows, as follows:
"Ho, Cheyennes! here I am! come and kill me! I am the great chief of the Crows. Come and kill me first, and then you can easily kill my warriors. Many of your braves have fallen by my hand; their scalps darken my lodge. Come! come and kill me!"
I was astonished at such rashness, and still more astonished at the enemy, who, on seeing him a fair mark for their bullets, even withdrew to a greater distance, and appeared to be perfectly paralyzed. After a while, our head chief descended, and took a long smoke at his pipe. The enemy retired without troubling us farther. In the night we decamped, and made all possible haste to our village, where we arrived in safety without any molestation from the enemy. The chief attributed
our escape to the interposition of the Great Spirit, whom the sacrifice of his son had propitiated in our behalf.
We killed fourteen of the enemy while in our intrenchment , making eighteen, and wounded a great number. We had eight killed, including the chief's son, and ten or eleven slightly wounded.
When we arrived at home there was great mourning, and we all assumed paint on our faces as usual. But we wore it only a short time before we took ample revenge. Pine Leaf did not accom-

The reception for the $185 level will begin at 5:30. All guests will be treated to dinner, drinks, entertainment, a raffle, and auction items.
Silveira says that RCHS provides several programs for both people and animals. “Our two original programs were Pet Adoption and Humane Education. Today we also serve the public with our Animal Safehouse Program. It’s a lifeline for animal victims of domestic violence and families in crisis. Pet Assisted Therapy delivers the unconditional love of animals to people in-need. Thanks to our Community Pet Food Bank no family has to give up their pet because they can’t afford pet food. The Celebration supports their programs.”
“While the theme of the Celebration is “Give, Love. The City of Escondido wants to make business owners aware of a recent scam regarding unsolicited fire inspections from individuals claiming to work for the fire department. Businesses in other cities as well as the City of Escondido have been victimized by individuals claiming to work for the fire department to conduct inspections. These individuals are dressed as fire department employees usually in a navy blue t-shirt with the word FIRE on the shirt. The Escondido Fire Department does not use private companies to inspect businesses and fire department personnel always leave a copy of the annual inspection form, which will have Escondido Fire Department at the top of the form.
Legitimate fire inspections are conducted by either Fire Suppression personnel from the fire stations or fire prevention personnel from Fire Administration. Escondido Fire Department personnel are always in an official fire department uniform with Escondido Fire Department badges, and carry a photo identification card. If you have any reason to doubt that the inspector conducting the fire inspection is an official fire department employee please contact the Escondido Fire Prevention Bureau at 760-8395400.

Escondido City Manager Announces Retirement
Escondido City Manager Clay Phillips informed the City Council today of his plans to retire this December. His last day will be December 18, 2015.
Phillips was the longest tenured City Manager in the city’s history, however, that tenure was often beset with a rocky relationship between Phillips and the public.
Several times protesters would gather at city hall, demanding Philliips be fired. On one occasion he had granted large raises to a number of department heads when the city was supposedly cutting back on expenses. He had done this on his own, without first consulting with the Escondido City Council. He was spoken to during Executive Session about this action but managed to avoid getting fired; another occasion was when former Chief of Police, Jim Maher, “retired,” following pressure by Phillips and Mayor Sam Abed. Anger over this incident continues to this day with no satisfactory answers having been given by Phillips or the city council. There is a lawsuit pending against the city, by Maher, over the details of this forced retirement. Somehow, Phillips weathered those storms and continued on in his position to the point of his retirement announcement.
Phillips has been with the city since 1986, first as Director of Finance. He rose through the

County supervisors are expected to consider the committee’s recommendation as part of an updated 20-year airport master plan to be adopted in the summer of 2017. The plan chosen Thursday would cost more than $100 million. Peter Drinkwater, the county’s director of airports, said it balances safety with operational needs and would have the fewest negative effects on businesses at the airport and the public. Presently, Palomar Airport, whose technical name is McClellan-Palomar, is now what the FAA considers a category B-II airport; under the recommended option it would become a modified C/D-III airport.
The airport needs to go to a higher category of service because it already has 6,000 “annual operations” by aircraft that exceed the B-II category, Drinkwater said. A single takeoff or landing is considered one operation. Officials say it will be 10 years before ground is broken, in any case.
Traffic at Palomar airport peaked in the 1980s and has declined since then, though corporate and charter business remains strong.

Avoiding Probate, Etc.
My sister-in-law died with a will but her estate still went to Probate. I thought a will avoided Probate. Please explain? /s/Joe S.
Dear Joe S.
Having a will -- means you “will” go to Probate. It is almost like an engraved invitation inviting you to the probate court. If you have a will, you can choose who you want to inherit your Estate. If you “do nothing” -- (incidentally this is the most common Estate Planning Technique), then the state of California
If you or your loved ones have a house or other assets, you may wish to consider having a Living Trust which will avoid probate. Joint tenancy also avoids probate but has numerous negative aspects which I have discussed in prior issues of this column. You may wish to call me if you missed this column and I’ll send you a copy. If the total estate is less than $150,000, you can avoid this process for a lesser fee (a small percentage of the above). Call for an appointment if this is your situation.

The Governor has Decided
According to statistics from the Governor’s office, this year Governor Brown signed 808 bills and vetoed 133, for a total of 941 bills. With over 2,300 new bills introduced, that’s a veto rate of about 14%.
Among the bills signed and vetoed, there were a number of surprises, and some that weren’t so surprising. Among the surprises, the Governor vetoed labor-backed legislation that would have allowed workers to take up to 12 weeks off to care for sick family members, including siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, domestic partners and parents-in-law. Current law only allows that benefit for sick children, parents or spouses. Governor Brown signed “rightto-die” legislation for the terminally ill, but vetoed the `right to try bill’ that would have allowed terminally ill patients to use experimental drugs as a last resort.
In spite of recent investigations and ongoing criticism of the California Public Utilities Commission, a package of bills

aimed at reforming the PUC, including legislation which attempted to rein in conflicts of interest among commissioners, was vetoed.
The Governor signed a bill that automatically registers people to vote who apply for new or renewed drivers’ licenses, increasing the likelihood of fraudulent voting by illegal immigrants. He also signed a package of bills establishing regulations to govern production, transportation and sale of medical marijuana.
In another surprising move, Governor Brown vetoed a bipartisan bill that attempted to rein in Americans with Disabilities Act lawsuit abuse by establishing a short window for small businesses to correct deficiencies in their compliance with the Act before being sued. Agree or disagree, eight months of debate, discussion and late-night committee hearings by 120 legislators eventually comes down to the final decisions of one individual.

requirements of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Often, these drugs are touted as "targeted medications" for specific problems. In reality, this targeting is aimed at specific demographics which are vulnerable to them. They are often very expensive because of the "cost of developmental research," even though their marketing cost far exceed the cost of their development. They are vetted by the FDA, to ensure their "safety." One example is the Antidepressant Drug (paroxetine) Paxil, where a controversial clinical trial (Study 329) in Y2001 concluded that it was safe for treating depressed teenagers. Spurred by an intensive marketing campaign, more than 2 million prescriptions were written for US children in Y2002 alone. One year later, the FDA issued a warning that Paxil can make some children and teenagers suicidal, and likely to harm themselves. A re-analysis of the data, published in the BMJ on Sept. 17, 2015, confirmed these dangers and added that the drug was ineffective.
Paxil was not taken off the market, and continues to make a healthy profit for its manufacturer. Clear warnings have been placed on the product label, thus shifting the responsibility for its misuse to the physician, who is often pressured by parents who have read its glossy advertisements. /s/Sorab Ghandhi Escondido CA.

Dear Editor:
First, while I certainly don't condone the rape of any person, if in fact this does occur in Afghanistan, it IS part of another culture. Which means that while you can believe and spout that you're open to cultural differences, writing an article against traditions only equates that really you are not. You do not have to be accepting of them, but you can not dictate what others should accept.
Second, there is no such word as 'abhorren'. Did you mean 'abhorrent'?
Third, Americans (or those who are from the U.S., not the rest of America) have some quite strange, different, rude and disgusting traditions as well. Shall I recite how we as Americans raped the female slaves and captives during

The Rise and Fall of Napoleon
Napoleon Bonaparte emerged to become emperor of France following the chaos of the French Revolution.
After King Louis XVI and his wife, Marie Antoinette, were executed, chaos reigned over France. Neighboring nations such as Austria, Prussia (Germany), Spain, and Great Britain declared war on France. After the Revolution’s "Reign of Terror,” a young artillery officer quickly rose through the ranks capturing the hearts of his countrymen much as he had overwhelmed his enemies on the field of battle. Napoleon was quick to capitalize on his popularity. He became known as “The Little Corporal,” which referred to his short stature and where he started in the Grand Army. Firmly in control of the army, which meant he controlled the nation, in 1804 Napoleon was crowned Emperor of France. During the coronation ceremony in Paris' historic Notre Dame Cathedral, the Little Corporal did something that shocked everyone witnessing the ceremony: just as the pope was about to place the crown on his head, Napoleon grabbed it and put it on himself. He would later explain that no mortal man was above the Emperor, so how could anyone but Napoleon himself place the crown? With Napoleon firmly in control, France went on the offensive, conquering nearly all of Europe and much of Russia. Because of early explorers and fur trappers, France controlled half of what is today the continental United States, plus much of the middle portion of settled Canada. The only thing stopping him from complete European domination was the British Royal Navy, the most powerful in the world. In order to raise money, Napoleon sold all of France’s territory to the United States in 1803. The prairie land between the Mississippi River from New Orleans, which was France's Louisiana capital city, north and west to the Rockies and Canada were included. It became known as "The
Louisiana Purchase.” The selling price was a staggering $15 million, less than 3 cents an acre. Today, nearly all of this land produces enough food to feed millions of people around the world.
In 1805, Napoleon lost a critical sea battle at Cape Trafalgar off the coast of Spain. Realizing his Grand Army could never cross the English Channel as long as the Royal Navy controlled the seas, Napoleon marched his Grand Army across Europe, invading Russia. Napoleon outran his supply lines, and being ill-equipped for winter and Russia's "scorched earth" tactic (burning everything and then retreating, leaving nothing for the enemy to survive on), Napoleon had to retreat from Moscow in 1812. He entered Russia with 600,000 troops, but only 40,000 survived to return home.
Napoleon returned to France where he was stripped of his crown and exiled to Elba, a small, desolate Mediterranean island off the coast of Italy. Napoleon was given a personal guard of 600 French troops, but the sea around Elba was patrolled by the Royal Navy. He managed to escape and return to power. In 1815, Napoleon led his reorganized Grand Army

DA: Oceanside Police Officer Justified in Shooting
The District Attorney’s office has ruled that an Oceanside police sergeant was justified in fatally shooting a man who pulled an unloaded pistol from his sweatshirt pocket outside a yacht sales office last year.
Sgt. Jeff Brandt killed Daniel Pedroza, 25, on April 7, 2014, when Pedroza kept fumbling with the gun, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said in a letter to Oceanside police Chief Frank McCoy last month. The letter was made public last week. Dumanis said Brandt, a 21-year department veteran at the time, reasonably believed that Pedroza was trying to get the semi-automatic pistol out of his pocket.
“Brandt was not required to wait and determine if Pedroza was actually going to shoot him,” Dumanis wrote. “In fact, had he hesitated, the situation could have ended with Brandt bring seriously injured or killed.” After the shooting Brandt started first aid on Pedroza until other officers and paramedics got there. Pedroza was airlifted to a hospital, where he died. Police said Pedroza and a friend had smoked meth on the drive to Oceanside, and he knew Pedroza had a handgun.

"My name is Rivka Blatberg," she purred. Rivka Blatberg. It was the kind of name that evoked visions of soft hands moving above Shabbos candles, passionate days on a kibbutz, feeding one another chocolate dreidels. It was the kind of name that made grown rabbis grow weak in the knees.

Fifth, keep the article on track instead of turning it into a personal tirade. Drama is so yesterday.
Sixth, the picture you've used of the old man kissing the boy ... it has nothing to do with the subject at hand. As anyone can plainly see, all the boys in the background are holding photos of some leader, probably the Ayatollah Khamenei who isn't even Afghani. Which means that the photo is being used in a misleading manner. This is NOT journalism.
I haven't bothered to read past the article itself - so badly written it is that I don't feel a need to read what you've no doubt cut and pasted as the "truth" on the Bacha Bazi. It is sad that you're willing to write a tirade about another country's tradition which you don't agree with. Most sincerely,

The man who robbed your innocence? The man who stole your heart and vanished like the last rugalach on the plate at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting?" She shook her head. "It's not like that, Shlomo. Belle is pet of the week at your Rancho Coastal Humane Society. She’s an 8 year old, 40 pound, Labrador Retriever / Springer Spaniel mix.
Belle arrived at Rancho Coastal Humane Society when her owner became too ill to care for her. She loves being indoors and she will let you know when she needs to go outside. She loves dogs and has lived with a cat. Belle loves everybody!
The $75 adoption fee for Belle includes medical exam, vaccinations, spay and microchip. For more information call 760-753-6413, visit Rancho Coastal Humane Society at 389 Requeza Street in Encinitas, or log on to SDpets.org.
Sonja, a 4-year-old Rex mix, is looking for a new home to call her own. This beautiful girl has plush Rex fur with unique markings and adorably curly whiskers. She’s a very confident bunny who gets alone well with cats and dogs, but prefers to be the only bunny in her home. She would love to find the perfect rabbitsavvy family who can appreciate her sassy nature. Sonja also has a condition known as Megacolon, which is a genetic condition that affects the lining in her intestine. This condition can be easily managed, but her diet needs to monitored closely to ensure that she stays a happy, healthy bunny! Bunnies like Sonja make excellent companions for any size home, can be litter box trained and have adorable characteristics when they hop and play that are sure to melt your heart. Open your heart and home to a bunny today! Sonja is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3450 East Valley Parkway. To learn more about making her part of your family, please call (760) 888-2275.
Pastor Richard Huls (Retired) Let’s Celebrate Halloween
October is known for many events – Harvest Festivals, Reformation Day, All Saint’s Day, Columbus Day, and of course, Halloween. That is the day receiving all the attention. Why? I have tried to understand this phenomena. The popularity of the day has grown into a staggering economic force when the average person spends a minimum of $27.00 on candy, parties, costumes, and other paraphernalia. What is driving all this activity? I don’t think it is the advertising hype. While the merchants like the money, it doesn’t seem to be
It used to be that some churches took stands against Halloween denying their children any play with masks, trick or treat, or costumes, especially those that depicted the devil or other scary characters. Today, however, I have noticed signs in front of churches urging neighbors and friends to join them for Halloween festivities.
Again, what is behind all of it? I am not a psychoanalyst, but it seems to me, while it isn’t devil worship, there seems to be a need to enter the world of the scary, horror, even grotesque, and fear. Perhaps our world has become so uncertain that there is a need to manifest this in Halloween images. It is to somehow identify with that evil side by projecting it in the scariest masks and costumes. While many say it is only fun, behind every word is something deeper. As our culture becomes less spiritual in a Biblical sense, I believe we will see more of this identification with the dark side of our nature.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Stay Safe This Halloween
As you get ready for trick-ortreating this Halloween, please keep in mind these safety reminders: • Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled flame-resistant or flame-retardant. • If your child is wearing a mask, make sure the eyeholes are large enough so they can see out. • Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting. • Keep dried flowers, cornstalks and other decorations away from all open flame and heat sources. • Remember to keep exits clear
of decorations, ensuring nothing blocks escape routes • Use flashlights or batteryoperated candles when illuminating Jack-o-lanterns • Do not allow children to carry sharp sticks or other objects that could cause injury • When in doubt, throw it out— closely inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. Discard any unwrapped treats from a stranger. • Young children should be accompanied by a trusted adult and walk from house to house on sidewalks when available. Halloween should be fun and safe for everyone and planning ahead can help keep the festivities safe.

Lyle: While I agree with you totally with respect to your main article, “Why the Hell Are We In Afghanistan,” and the subject matter of the the article, “bacha hazi,” child sexual slaves, horrific practices. I also not without an ounce of condemnation, that “Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle” quite often, in the “Compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties,” very often offers double entenres and is poking at the idiosyncracies associated with sexuality, in our hush, hush society. While I also enjoy and lookk forward to the Chuckles along with responsibly developed primary articles of The Paper it seems humor of “Chuckles” comes often from incongruities related to relationships and sexual hypocrisy. Comedy at the expense of social, sexual improprieties and idiosyncracies.
Yet, keep up the good work. The Paper is a real gift to the community. /s/Bob Focosi San Marcos, CA.
Main Story
Dear Lyle,
Yes, I bet the story of the sodomized young boys of Afghanistan makes many of your readers angry - as it should! But you are right, this story needs to be told. We call those people our allies!? They do not deserve the name, and they do not deserve the lives of our soldiers! What is just as maddening, of course, is what happened to the career of SFC Martland who witnessed a boy being sexually abused. Martland, a decorated 11 year veteran, could not be silent and took action. To relieve him of his post shows that all our talk about "Human Rights" is just that - talk! Another example is that our biggest trading partner, the Chinese, have one of the worst human rights violations. And ultimately we keep our mouth and eyes shut. Let's get out of Afghanistan, bring our boys home! We will never change the corrupt and abusive "culture" of that country! Thank you for printing that story, Lyle! Bravo! Barbara Baenziger Oceanside

Keeping Trick-or-Treaters Safe
Halloween is a fun time of the year and everyone wants a safe and happy Halloween for themselves and especially their children. Using safety tips and common sense can help make the most of the upcoming Halloween night. Following are tips to keep children and adults safe next week, when accidents and injuries are more likely to occur. Enjoy your Halloween fun and treats! • Welcome trick-or-treaters with porch lights and any exterior lights on.
• Do not give homemade or unwrapped treats to children. • Use extreme caution when driving a vehicle. Be on the alert for youngsters darting out into traffic. • Costumes should be flame retardant so children aren't in danger near burning jack-olanterns. • Keep costumes short to prevent trips, falls, and other bumps in the night. • Try make-up instead of a mask. Masks can obstruct a child's vision. • Make sure kids wear light colors or put reflective tape on costumes for increased visibility.

against the British and the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in presentday Belgium.
Once again in defeat he was stripped of his power and exiled to the even smaller and more desolate British-owned island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic off the coast of Africa where he died mysteriously on or before May 15, 1821. It's long been a debate whether he died of natural causes or was murdered. Napoleon's influence is still around us today. Every nation Napoleon conquered or controlled drives its vehicles on the right side of the road. The British drive on the left side of road. The reason has been argued, but the most common
entertainment by featuring a variety of music, artistic performances, dancing, food and beverages, this is a night you don’t want to miss!
Partygoers must be 21 and older. Single tickets are $20 for Museum of Art members, $30 for nonmembers and include a drink voucher. VIP tickets are $125 for members, $135 for non-members and include access to the Artists Lounge with hosted light appetizers, beverages & bar and a cool swag bag with an event tshirt and other surprises. The Museum of Art is located at 704 Pier View Way. For more information about this event, please call 760-435-3730.
explanation is that Napoleon wanted his cavalry to be able to draw their swords and fight as they road down a road with the weapon on the “outside of the column, instead of the inside.” It makes sense if everyone was right-handed. Still, like his death, no one knows for sure.
Ask any Brit today and they’ll explain, “You Americans drive on the right side of the road, whereas we British drive on the ‘correct’ side of the road.”

The Paper • Page 12 • October 29, 2015 Fred called us last week and announced that he needed a new computer. Since we had built Fred a $2,000 Pentium III 500 PC only 9 months before, I asked him if there was a problem with his computer.
Paul & Nome Van Middlesworth, The Computer Factory

A Blast from the Past:
The following is a column we wrote for “The Paper” January 31st 2000.
Fred has been our favorite regular customer since we opened our store in 1995. To say that Fred has more money than good sense may be unkind but it’s not far from the truth. He lives on one of those “old money” estates in “The Ranch.” His parents made a fortune in real estate and Fred was the only child. When people ask him what he does for a living, Fred’s cheerful answer is “I write checks.” Fred has never held a job and doesn’t get involved in his financial interests. He pays people to manage his investments and properties and from all appearances, they do it quite well. Fred spends daylight hours at tennis and golf. At night he plays with his computer. He is eternally cheerful and optimistic and seems never to have a negative thought.
“Oh heavens no, it runs just fine,” Fred replied. “It’s just that with technology and all moving so fast, I thought that I might be able to get something newer and faster.” I asked Fred what he was using his computer for. “Lots of things,” said Fred. “I play Free Cell, two different kinds of Solitaire, Pak Man, Frogger and I keep track of my golf handicap.” “How about the Internet” I asked, “are you on cable or dial-up.”
There was a pause “What’s the Internet?” Fred asked.

Fred checked his “C” drive. “It looks like I have about 5.8 gigabytes left.” “Fred,” I said, “I see no reason why you couldn’t have a 20 gigabyte hard drive this time around.”

“Why a DVD?” I asked, “you have a 50 seat movie theater in your house?”
“The projectionist has Tuesdays off,” Fred replied. “And besides, PC Magazine says all the new high end computers should have a DVD.” “You’ve got it Fred, we can have your new computer ready by Friday but with prices are dropping every day, you need to give me your bankcard and PIN number over the phone so that I can guarantee today’s pricing.” “Done,” said Fred.
“Wonderful.” Said Fred, “I knew I could count on you.” Fred’s voice trembled with anticipation. “What am I getting?.”
“Well Fred, I think we can build your new PC around the latest and greatest, newly released AMD 750MHz CPU. If I order it today we can get it before the price drops. It’s the fastest CPU available for personal computers.” “Faster than my Pentium 500?” Fred asked. “About 40% faster, ” I said.

Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.
“The Disc Itself Is Active Tissue...”
So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.
The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.
brown leaves are the plant’s problem? Of course not, the leaves turning brown is just a condition that is telling you that there is something wrong with the plant. The plant is unhealthy and needs water and nutrients. You could spray paint the leaves green but it just covers up the condition. The underlying problem still exists and will continue to produce brown leaves until you fix the actual problem. and tingling that most experience with bulging, herniated or degenerative discs are NOT the problem. The definition of a symptom: “something that indicates the existence of something else.” It is just like the dashboard of your car telling you that something is wrong (brake lights out, engine needs checked, overheating, etc.) Those lights that appear in your car dash are NOT the problem. You can remove the lights surgically or put a piece of duct tape over the lights but the problem will NOT be fixed...the problem is still present. Let’s take a look at a plant for example...if the leaves on a plant begin to turn brown, would you say that the

Halloween Tips That will Save Your Teeth Even if you Eat Candy!
Hey, Happy Halloween to all of our patients, present and future! Can you believe we are at the end of the year?!

In your spine, when the pump mechanism of disc nutrition fails, the disc will begin to de-generate and become weak. This weakness in the disc is what produces the bulging, herniated, and degenerative discs.
The treatment that is provided at Dr. Heilman’s Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido is revolutionary and is specifically designed to artificially re-create the pump mechanism in the discs which allows the spinal discs to heal and repair. The best part of the treatment is that it uses no drugs, no injections, and no surgery. Plus it’s painless and many patients relax and fall asleep while undergoing the treatment. The amount of treatment needed to allow the discs to heal and repair varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and orthopedic evaluation. We do NOT accept everyone for treatment and will let you know if we can accept your case for treatment.
Dr. Stephen Heilman, DC at the Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido, CA will do a spinal disc severity examination to determine the

I wanted to give you 3 quick tips to help keep your teeth healthy EVEN IF you eat some of the good stuff this month.
Here they are: 1. If you are going to eat it, do it in one sitting, avoid snacking on it all day long. All day snacking promotes a more acidic chemistry in your mouth which means a higher chance for decay/cavities.
2. Give a preference to candy that's SOFT AND CHEWY over Hard AND STICKY. The latter will pop off your crowns and crack your fillings! Yikes... trust me that's not what we're are aiming for! 3. After you've indulged, then at least rinse your mouth with really warm water! Note- I didn't say piping hot, I said really warm... just a reminder for all you risk takers, keep it really
extent of your disc damage for only $70. This examination will consist of a detailed neurological evaluation, extensive orthopedic testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your evaluation. warm and not super hot. The warm water tends to dissolve any remaining sugar or candy particles left on the teeth much more effectively and quicker. OK, there you got it, 3 cool tips for your teeth this Halloween.
