TAKE A MULTIPLE-CHOICE QUIZ By Friedrich Gomez
It matters not if you’re young, middle-aged, or senior citizen. It doesn’t even matter if you’re male or female, or what your ethnic background or political persuasion is – you either have a loved one, family member, or know a close friend who is (or was) a U. S. veteran. Therefore, this article is dedicated – without exception – to all Americans everywhere who, despite your diversity and opposing opinions, come together on common ground to honor and celebrate The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

Veterans Day together.
Sunday, November 11, 2018 is Veterans Day in America but observed Monday, November 12th. It is a well-deserved national holiday to reflect on one of our most valuable resources: Our heroic military veterans, the men and women who guard, protect, and serve us every second of every day. Because we are often wrapped up in our busy daily schedules, rushing off to school or work, or perhaps enjoying a picnic with family and friends, we often forget that our
minute-to-minute existence is being protected and watched over 24/7 by members of our combined armed forces.
Let us pause and reflect on our great nation of valiant patriots, here and abroad, who serve, sacrifice, and often die for you and I.
In honor of our veterans, past to present, here is a special Veterans Day multiple-choice quiz to remind us all of our rich legacy which keeps us all safe and free. In taking this multiple-choice quiz you will also learn of our military heritage and heroic traditions of our United
States of America. KEEP SCORE JUST FOR FUN: 19-24 Correct: You’re Awesome! 15-18 Correct: Excellent! 12-14 Correct: Very Good! 8-11 Correct: Passing Grade
WHY WAS NOVEMBER 11TH SELECTED FOR VETERANS DAY? A. It’s when fighting ceased during World War 1. B. It’s when fighting ceased during World War II. C. It’s when fighting ceased during the Korean War.

Honoring Veterans Day Cont. from Page 1
Correct answer is “A” when fighting ceased during World War 1. While it is true that the First World War “officially ended” on June 28, 1919 when the Treaty of Versailles was signed, America recognizes the fact that: “Fighting had actually ceased 7 months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.” So, for that very reason, November 11 is “generally” regarded as the end of the First World War and the day America officially selected and signed into law as a holiday that eventually became known as “Veterans Day” in this country. VETERANS DAY USED TO BE CALLED: A Armistice Day B 4th of July C Soldiers Day
If you selected “A” above, you are correct! Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” in 1919. The U. S. Congress eventually passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and in 1938 Armistice Day was made a national holiday in this country. Armistice Day in America would eventually be changed (officially) to Veterans Day.

Rebuilding New Orleans after Katrina often caused residents to be challenged to prove home titles back hundreds of years. That is because of community history stretching back over two centuries during which houses were passed along through generations of family, sometimes making it quite difficult to establish a paper trail of ownership. A New Orleans lawyer sought an FHA rebuilding loan for a client. He was told the loan would be granted upon submission of satisfactory proof of ownership of the parcel of property as it was being offered as collateral. It took the lawyer 3 months, but he was able to prove title to the property dating back to 1803. After sending the information to the FHA, he received the following reply.
LAW? A. Abraham Lincoln B. Dwight D. Eisenhower C. Donald Trump
If you picked “B” Dwight D. Eisenhower, then you’re on a roll! In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower officially changed the name of the holiday “Armistice Day” to “Veterans Day.” By the way, in 1968 the U. S. Congress moved Veterans Day to the 4th Monday in October, but in 1976, President Gerald Ford returned Veterans Day to November 11. And so it remains today on our American calendar.
WHAT DOES VETERANS DAY HONOR? A. Honors only military veterans who died in action. B. Honors only military veterans currently serving. C. Honors all U. S. military veterans, living or dead. Well, this can be a bit tricky, because Veterans Day should not be confused with Remembrance Day or Memorial Day. So, if your instincts told you “C” then your instincts were right on the money! Veterans Day celebrates all U. S. military veterans, living or dead. However, Veterans Day especially gives thanks to living veterans who serve us, either in war or peacetime, past to present. While they are still with us, we cherish and honor them, as well we should. HOW MANY WORLD WAR I (Actual reply from FHA):
"Upon review of your letter adjoining your client's loan application, we note that the request is supported by an Abstract of Title. While we compliment the able manner in which you have prepared and presented the application, we must point out that you have only cleared title to the proposed collateral property back to 1803. Before final approval can be accorded, it will be necessary to clear the title back to its origin." And here is the great letter the lawyer responded with: (Actual response):
"Your letter regarding title in Case No.189156 has been received. I note that you wish to have proof of title extended further than the 206 years already covered in the present application. I was unaware that any educated person in this country, particularly those working with real property, would not know that Louisiana was purchased by the United States from France in 1803, the year of origin of title identified in our application. For the edification of uninformed FHA bureaucrats, the title to the land prior to U.S. ownership was obtained from France, which had acquired it by Right of Conquest from Spain. The land came into the possession of Spain by Right of Discovery made in the year 1492 by a sea captain named Christopher Columbus, who had been granted the privilege of seeking a new route to India by the
MILITARY VETERANS WITH US TODAY? A. 7 B. 3 C None
ARE
Sadly, the correct answer is “C.” There are no official First World War military veterans alive today. The last (verified) World War I veteran survivor was Florence Beatrice Green, an English woman who worked as a waitress in the Women’s Royal Air Force and, therefore, officially a member of the WRAF. She was not recognized as a veteran until 2008. Florence Green was born on February 19, 1901 and died at the great age of 110 on February 4, 2012. She narrowly missed her 111th birthday. (Note: There have been 4 “unverified” individuals who claimed to be veterans of the First World War. Their claims remain unfounded in fact.) HOW MANY WORLD WAR II SURVIVORS ARE THERE TODAY? A Over 600,000 B Over 1-million C Over 2-million
Correct answer is “A.” According to the U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs statistics: “We are losing military veterans at an alarming rate. Of the 16-million Americans who served in World War II, only about 620,000 are alive today – with this number dropping.” HOW OLD IS THE OLDEST U. S.
MILITARY SURVIVOR WORLD WAR II? A. 102 years old. B. 109 years old. C. 112 years old.
OF
If you selected “C” for 112 years old, well, you are absolutely correct! Richard Arvin Overton (born May 11, 1906) is the oldest verified surviving U. S. war veteran at 112 years of age. He served in the U. S. Army during the Second World War from 1940-45 and currently lives in Austin, Texas. U. S. President Barack Obama personally greeted Overton at the White House on Veterans Day 2013. Overton is both the oldest surviving American military veteran of World War II and also the oldest living American in our country today. WHAT AGE WAS THE YOUNGEST U. S. WWII VETERAN? A. 12 years old. B. 13 years old. C. 14 years old.
This is hard to believe, but, if you chose “A” above you’re correct! Calvin Leon Graham (born April 3, 1930 – died November 6, 1992), was the youngest U. S. serviceman to serve and fight during the Second World War. Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, young Calvin enlisted in the U. S. Navy from Houston, Texas on August 15, 1942 at the age of 12 and sent to boot camp in San

Spanish monarch, Queen Isabella. The good Queen Isabella, being a pious woman and almost as careful about titles as the FHA, took the precaution of securing the blessing of the Pope before she sold her jewels to finance Columbus 's expedition. Now the Pope, as I'm sure you may know, is the emissary of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, and God, it is commonly accepted, created this world. Therefore, I believe it is safe to presume that God also made that part of the world called Louisiana. God, therefore, would be the owner of origin and His origins date back to before the beginning of time, the world as we know it, and the FHA. I hope you find God's original claim to be satisfactory.

Not only is this one of the best e-mails I have received, it is a great history lesson. Elephant Thorn
A man goes to Africa on a safari. While there he comes upon an elephant in great pain, with a giant thorn in its foot. The man very carefully approaches the elephant, and gingerly removes the thorn from its foot. The elephant begins to walk away, then turns and stares at the man for a full minute, locking eyes with him. The elephant then continues on its way. "I wonder if I ever
A few years later, and the man is at a circus back in the States. He notices that one of the elephants keeps looking at him, almost like it KNOWS him. The man wonders, "Could this be that elephant I helped so long ago?" He decides to get a closer look. With the elephant still giving him the stare-down, the man moves in closer, getting right up in front of the elephant. They lock eyes. A knowing look seems to cross the elephant's face. It reaches down... picks the man up carefully with its trunk... lifts him high in the air... and THROWS HIM CRASHING TO THE GROUND AND NEARLY STOMPS HIM TO DEATH! More Blonde Jokes

Diego, California. Calvin obviously lied about his age and was later stripped of his medals. However, in 1978 he was finally given an Honorable Discharge with the approval of the U. S. Congress and President Jimmy Carter. Also, all of his decorations and military awards were fully re-instated with the intervention of both presidents, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan signed legislation giving him full disability benefits. Calvin Graham’s most remarkable story was portrayed in the TV movie “Too Young the Hero,” in which he was played by actor Ricky Schroder. WHICH IS TRUE ABOUT THE KOREAN WAR? A. Korean War never technically ended. B. First war to use jet aircraft in aerial dogfights. C. Lasted over 3 years. D. All of the above is correct.
Well, I’ll bet this one kept you thinking for a spell. But, if you went with “D” that all of the above is correct, then you get a hearty pat on the back! The Korean War lasted over 3 years from June 25, 1950 to July 27, 1953. And even though – in recent weeks – South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un made history by both formally declaring an end to the Korean War (65 years after the fact), the Korean War has

still technically not ended. While President Donald Trump has given his “blessing” for the two Koreas in discussing the end of the Korean War, there can be no “official” end to the war because of the involvement of the United Nations and other countries during the conflict – all of which will be required to sign an official peace treaty. Also, South Korea was never a “direct signatory” to the armistice that stopped the fighting. Until all involved participants in the Korean War participate as “signatories” on an official peace treaty, then officially and technically – the Korean War has never formally ended, to this time. Regarding the war to first use jet aircraft in actual combat: On November 8, 1950, early in the Korean conflict, a U. S. Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star (flown by U. S. Air Force Lieutenant Russell Brown) shot down a Soviet-built MiG-15, flown by a North Korean pilot. It was the first air-to-air combat between jet planes in aviation history. WHICH U. S. STATE HAS THE MOST LIVING VETERANS? A. California B. Texas C. Florida
You get a pat on the back if you chose “A” for California! Of the top 10 U. S. states with the most military veterans, California is Number One, followed by Texas and Florida.

HOW MANY U.S. MILITARY DIED IN THE VIETNAM WAR? A. Over 38,000 B. Over 48,000 C. Over 58,000 There are no precise numbers of U. S. military fatalities during the Vietnam War due to faulty recordkeeping. However, the U. S. Department of Defense states: “As of May 2018 there have been an estimated 58,220 U. S. military war death in Vietnam War.” The Dept. of Defense further acknowledges that this number differs from the number of Vietnam fatalities listed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall at Washington, D. C., which (as of May 2018): lists 58,320 names, including both men and women. However, even the names inscribed on the Memorial Wall are (admittedly) not a complete list, since many Vietnam fatalities were omitted at the request of families. Also, there is the unknown factor of those service members who were unaccounted for (missing in action, MIA) during the conflict. Adding to these imprecise numbers is that the U. S. Department of Defense records approximately 9 to 12 million Americans who fraudulently claim they served in Vietnam. Nevertheless, it seems a reasonably safe assumption that well over 58,000 U. S. military died during the Vietnam War. Living or dead, all U. S. Vietnam veterans today are honored by our observance of Veterans Day. The same holds true for all our military veterans today, here and abroad, retired, active, or

WHICH OF THE U. S. ARMED FORCES LISTED BELOW IS THE OLDEST? A. Army B. Marine Corps C. Navy D. Air Force E. Coast Guard
First off, all of our U. S. military armed forces are first in our hearts. However, the oldest U. S. Armed Forces branch today is “A” above, the U. S. Army. Officially, the U. S. Department of Defense lists the U. S. Army as the largest and oldest service in the U. S. military. See the U. S. Armed Forces dates below: U. S. Army: Est. as the continental army, June 14, 1775. U. S. Navy: Est. October 13, 1775. U. S. Marine Corps: Est. November 10, 1775. U. S. Air Force: Est. September 18, 1947. U. S. Coast Guard: Est. January 28, 1915. (Please Note: According to the U. S. Department of Defense, there are officially 5 branches of the U. S. Military Armed Forces, as listed above. Some internet sources, websites, and personal blogs erroneously list as many as 7 and even 10 official branches of the U. S. military armed forces, often confusing “departments” or “divisions” or “components” with the official rul-

Normal ocean currents and waves constantly push sand into the harbor. Man About Town
I love shopping at Costco. I hate shopping at Costco.
First, reasons I love shopping at Costco.
Prices. Lots of items at very good prices.
Variety. Wide variety. Hard meats, produce, goods, seafood. You name it.
The requirement to buy two, or three, or four, or six of something . . . when all you need is one.
Today, for example, I wanted to pick up mouthwash. You can only buy mouthwash in a two-bottle pack. That's enough to give a battalion of Marines fresh breath for a month. I wanted to pick up bags of those inexpensive, throw-away razors. Costco doesn't stock 'em. Only the package of six for $21. Don't want 'em. Want my 'el cheapos.' Shave twice/three times, throw 'em away. Not at Costco. Have to go to CVS to get them.
Staff. Well trained, efficient, helpful. Wanted to get ONE bottle of Margarita mix. Nope. Have to The Road Show. These are the buy a two-pack. One bottle vendors that come in and give would last me a year. Two botaway free food. One can have tles would last me (checking a free lunch and/or dinner if my computer's calculator) . . .

The several marijuana measures went to the ballot in Vista this week. Proponents of Measure Z, have invested more than a half-million dollars toward legalizing pot sales in the city.
Two campaign committees supporting the measure, which would allow up to 11 marijuana retailers to operate in the city, have spent a total of $575,469 since 2016 to get the initiative on the ballot and promote its passage. Measure Z, sponsored by citizens and businesses, is one of three measures on the Nov. 6 ballot that would permit and regulate marijuana sales. Two additional city-sponsored initiatives, Measures AA and BB, would allow up to three delivery-only medical marijuana

Changing of specials. A month ago I found a delightful pack of sliced, smoked salmon. Perfect for fixing up lox and bagels. A nice toasted bagel, with cream cheese, a slab of lox (salmon), a slice of onion, capers . . . makes for a nice breakfast or mid-day snack. Went back today planning on buying two or three packs of these delicious, smoked salmon. No longer in stock.
Speaking of bagels . . . I want to buy one bag of bagels. Nope. You have to buy two. I told the checker I only wanted one bag. "Okay," he says, "but I have to charge you for two." So I got two . . . and they last forever. (See in-depth calculations for length of use under "Margaritas" above).
A little thing like frozen fruit bars . . . no longer stocked. A nice munchie at night . . . or mid-afternoon. We wound up getting a box of fudgesicles and a box of ice cream sandwiches. We have high hopes that Costco will not discontinue these.

So often you find great products at Costco, you get used to it, look forward to buying more, only to have Costco stop stocking it. However, the National Guard is not “formally” listed as one of the 5 U. S. Armed Forces since it operates in part under state authority.” Even so, it must be made clear that the National Guard is highly honored and its veterans held high in our hearts for their noble service to all of us, defending and keeping us safe. Their sacrifice and noble service can never be measured. The National Guard are among our most treasured soldiers. And we shall forever love them, past to present. Regarding the U. S. Coast Guard, it is officially one of the 5 U. S. Armed Forces, however, the U. S. Dept. of Defense clearly adds: “The Secretary of the Department of Defense has control over the military and each branch – except the U. S. Coast Guard, which is under the Department of Homeland Security, except when operating as a service in the Navy. The U. S. Coast Guard provides law and mar-

atomic bomb used in warfare. It was dropped on Hiroshima, Japan on August 6, 1945. The bomb itself was 10-feet long with a 28-inch diameter and weighed 9,700 pounds. The blast was equal to about 15 kilotons of TNT.

The code name “Little Boy” was based on its shape and inspired from the detective novel and movie series about “The Thin Man.” On the other hand, the “Fat Man” atomic bomb was round and fat so it was named after the movie character Kasper Gutman (played by heavyset actor Sydney Greenstreet) in the film “The Maltese Falcon.” Of the two atomic bombs, Fat Man was bigger and more powerful. DMV updates
The Department of Motor Vehicles has been in the news a lot recently. Problems have included long wait times, computer crashes, and voter registration errors. The DMV is just one of many state agencies in need of modernization. This session I introduced legislation that would require all state agencies, the DMV and the Legislature included, to adopt innovative new technologies aimed at increasing efficiency, enhancing cybersecurity and providing better public service and transparency. Steps are under way to fix the problems at DMV. These include adding additional employees, opening some offices on Saturdays and placing self-service kiosks in grocery stores where vehicle license plate renewals, along with the stickers, can be processed instantly. Local locations include Albertsons stores at 1509 E. Valley Pkwy., Escondido, 1601 S. Melrose Dr., Vista, and at the Ralphs store located at 23801 Washington Ave., in Murrieta.
DMV employees don’t like this situation much either. Like the general public, they are victims of decades-old computer technology and antiquated procedures that

In August a proposal to audit the DMV about these and other issues failed by just one vote in the Joint Legislative Audit Committee after pressure from Governor Brown. However, after reports of 23,000 erroneous voter registrations surfaced, Governor Brown ordered an audit by the Department of Finance. The audit is expected to be completed in March. In the meantime, about 1,500 unauthorized voters have been purged from the voter rolls. We pride ourselves on being innovative and forward thinking. But when it comes serving the public, California is seriously lagging. We need to join the 21st Century. Palomar Foundation Gala for Palomar Medical Center Physicians and Staff
It was one of the better parties of the year and it all happened at Arie DeJong’s Melrose Ranch in Escondido. It was a thank-you to the physicians and staff of Palomar Medical Center as well as a recognition of donors who had helped support the Foundation.
The greatest love story of the 20th century is said to have also touched Melrose Ranch. King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson would stay at the ranch when Prince (later King) Edward was in San Diego County. Lord Somerville would send his driver to Coronado to pick up Wallis Simpson and bring her to Melrose Manor.

He designed and developed golf courses in Europe, Ireland, England, and for the King of Morocco. And, for some years in the ‘90s, he operated an 11plane airline out of San Diego.
At 89, after successfully selling all of his holdings, he was writing his autobiography of a life fully lived. Then, he was asked what happened to his airline? Why didn’t he create another to fly out of Carlsbad’s Palomar Airport? Why not? It was 2009 and he wasn’t yet 90.
A Life of Flying High
Nearly a century ago, a young lad born to Greek parents started out in life as an outstanding high school football and baseball player. He even excelled in basketball. In 1940, he found himself joining the Navy to become a pilot, but before he could actually climb into a cockpit, World War II broke out and he was scooped up from the classroom at Pensacola Naval Air Station to become a member of ship’s company aboard the new aircraft carrier USS Wasp (CV-7). The first of several close encounters with death came out in the Pacific on June 6, 1942 during the Battle of Midway – he missed that action – just barely. He was a gunner on a the two-man TBF Avenger aircraft in VT-7 torpedo squadron. As that battle approached, the Navy decided to make a new torpedo squadron, VT-8. The Navy lined up VT-7’s crews on the deck of the Wasp and divided it in half. He remained in VT-7 and stayed aboard the Wasp as it headed to the South Pacific. On that fateful day during the Battle of Midway, every plane except one in the new VT-8 squadron was shot down by the Japanese as they attempted to attack the Imperial Fleet. Later, at age 23, he became the youngest chief petty officer in the Navy.
Last week, on Thursday, (Nov. 1), North County entrepreneur Ted Vallas launches his new California Pacific Airlines with the first flight going to San Jose at 7 a.m.. The next day, Reno was added, and by Nov. 15, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and later Sacramento will complete the list of destinations flying out of Carlsbad’s North County airport. Now at 97, Ted figures he’s still too young to retire.
“Work is what keeps you young,” Ted reckons.

Alzheimers and Dementia Linked to Gum Disease
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the South Carolina School of Medicine both confirm the link between the bacteria "biofilm" on your teeth (plaque) and diseases including pancreatic cancer, diabetes, and dementia and are much more serious than just the obvious symptoms including inflammed gums and bad breath?
Oral inflammation leads to amyloid deposition producing neuritc plaques in the brain. These plaques promote senility and lead to Alzheimers Disease.
Additionally, researchers at the South Carolina School of Medicine showed that the worse a patient's periodontal disease gets, the bigger risk of stroke. Even "mild" gum disease can double your stroke risk. In another study scientists at John Hopkins has now found a particular type of mouth bacteria causes rheumatoid arthritis.
Infection of a root tip can TRIPLE your risk of heart disease! Another discovery revealed that those that skipped dental check-ups are almost 90% more likely to come down with bacterial pneumonia compared to those that have checkups twice a year. It's become pretty clear that your dental health should be right up there with the same degree of importance as having your heart checked or keeping tabs on your blood pressure. And if your gums bleed, are swollen or hurt when you brush your teeth, or your teeth are loose
or have a receding gumline, you need to see your dentist immediately.

San Diego County Native Serves with Versatile U.S. Navy Helicopter Squadron "Dragon Whales" – A 2001 Mar Vista High School graduate and San Diego County native is serving with the U.S. Navy helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 28 in Norfolk, Virginia. Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Darien Durr is a naval aircrewman (helicopter) serving with HSC 28, known as the “Dragon Whales.” A versatile squadron that’s capable of completing a number of important missions for the Navy with the MH-60S “Seahawk” helicopter. As Navy naval aircrewman, Durr is responsible for flight operations as well as training other junior sailors. He regularly trains 25 junior personnel for weapons deployments, search and rescue techniques, shipboard flights, and logistics missions. Dragon Whales operate the MH-60S Seahawk and deploy with the Second, Fifth and Sixth Fleets to provide critical mission support. Their capabilities include drone recovery, special operations aerial training,
cargo and passenger transport, and fleet support to Navy, Air Force, and Army units along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. HSC 28 consists of 14 aircraft, 267 enlisted sailors, and 51 officers. At sea, they perform vital vertical replenishment (VERTREP); crucial passenger, mail, and internal cargo transport; and continuous search and rescue operations.
“My favorite part is passing down 17 years of experience to junior sailors in all aspects of this job,” Durr said. “It's rewarding to see the 'street to fleet' transition they make, especially when I see them tactically employ all of their required training.” Durr credits success in the Navy to many of the lessons learned in San Diego. “Growing up I learned from a lot of teachers the importance of setting goals and not quitting,” Durr said. He walked in and saw her lying there so provocatively. "What are you doing?" he asked.
"This is my love dress," she whispered sensually. "Need's ironing," he said. "What's for dinner?"
Poor guy never even heard the gunshot. Excerpts From 6th Grade History Tests
1. The greatest writer of the Renaissance was William Shakespeare. He was born in the 1564, supposedly on his birthday. He never made much money and is famous only because of his plays. He wrote tragedies, comedies, and hysterectomies, all in Islamic pentameter. Romeo and Juliet are an example of a heroic couple.
2. Writing at the same time as Shakespeare was Miguel Cervantes. He wrote Donkey Hote. The next great author was John Milton. Milton wrote Paradise Lost. Then his wife died and he wrote Paradise Regained. 3. Delegates from the original 13 states formed the Contented Congress. Thomas Jefferson, a vir-
gin, and Benjamin Franklin were to 2 singers of the Declaration of Independence. Franklin discovered electricity by rubbing two cats backward and declared, "a horse divided against itself can not stand." Franklin died in 1790 and is still dead. 4. Abraham Lincoln was America's greatest precedent. Lincoln's mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin which he built with his own hands. Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves by signing the Emasculation Proclamation. On the night of April 14, 1865, Lincoln went to the theater and got shot in his seat by one of the actors in the moving picture show. They believe the assinator was John Wilkes Booth, a suposingly insane actor. This ruined Booth's career. 5. Johann Bach wrote a great many musical compositions and had a large number of children. Bach died from 1750 to the present. Bach was the most famous composer in the world and so was Handel. Handel was half German, half Italian, and half English. He was very large.
6. Beethoven wrote music even though he was deaf. He was so deaf he wrote loud music. He took long walks in the forest even when everyone was calling for him. Beethoven expired in 1827 and later died from this. Subscribe to The Paper!

Getting Christmas off to a Great Start December 1 or 2
Would you say that Christmas is “The most wonderful season of all”? I think most Americans would. Here are three ideas for making this year’s Christmas even more wonderful: 1. Get off to a great start:
Build a memory and get in the Christmas spirit with us during the first weekend of December through a celebration we’re calling, Christmas Around the World. While treating you to historic and contemporary
2. Skip the Black Friday rush:
If you want to shop that day, arrive at the store at 9 a.m., after the full court press is over. The cheer will still be there, minus the crowd and the panic. 3. Give:
The best part of the season is the spirit of generosity. The Bible’s most famous verse is God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son. It’s the season every charitable institution depends on for funding for the coming year. The average American will give to six nonprofits this year. Which ones will enable you to feel the blessings of generosity this season?

Though there are many ways for sailors to earn distinction in their command, community, and career, Durr is most proud of being a rescue swimmer instructor. “You get to mold future rescue swimmers which is a great experience,” Durr said. “It’s also a lot of responsibility, you’re actually holding people’s careers in your hand and get to make the call whether they are ready to go to the fleet or not. It's very rewarding.”
Operational and deployed today with the U.S. Navy as the primary anti-submarine warfare anti-surface weapon system for open ocean and littoral zones, the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter is the world’s most advanced maritime helicopter. It is the most capable naval helicopter available today designed to operate from frigates, destroyers, cruisers, and aircraft carriers. The MH-60R Sea Hawk is over 60 feet long, and can weigh up to 23,500 lbs. It is replacing the Navy’s older helicopters because of its greater versatility and more advanced weapon systems. As a member of one of the U.S. Navy’s most relied upon assets, Durr and other sailors know they are part of a legacy that will last beyond their lifetimes, one that will provide a critical component of the Navy the nation needs. “Serving in the Navy means excellence,” Durr added. “During my career, I’ve worked with every branch of the military and I saw the Navy excel in many areas. We're a dominant force in the world. Every country knows about the Navy and what we're capable of. Knowing that we are anywhere and everywhere at the same time, always ready for any mission, is what makes me proud to be a Navy sailor.”

Microsoft provides STEM Assemblies designed by engineers. This hands-on student approach brings immediate results. Teachers are able to enhance the way they teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects because the Assembly supports hands-on experiments and inquiry-based approaches to the curriculum. Microsoft STEM Assemblies provide teachers with the tools they need to be more effective educators. The Assemblies make the classroom a more exciting place for both Teachers and Students. Last month we announced that we would be closing The Computer Factory at the end of 2018 and moving on to new adventures. Our customers convinced us that a much better solution would be to find a “white knight” (of any color) to step up and keep The Computer Factory open. While that would be better for everyone, even a white knight wants to see the potential for a positive result in his rescue. Bluntly stated, white knights rarely rescue ugly maidens. Admittedly we’ve been a bit distracted over the past year or two and failed to take advantages of changes in our industry. As a result our business had

Lions Clubs Screened 224 Children in Fallbrook – The San Marcos Lions and San Diego North County Lions Clubs screened 224 children at William H. Frazier Elementary School in Fallbrook. The Lions Clubs has a Memo of Understanding (MOU) in partnering with the Fallbrook Unified Elementary School District for Vision Screening. Vision screenings were provided by “certified screeners” Norm MacKenzie, President SM Lions Club and President John Ruiz, SDNC Lions Club. “The actual screenings took less than a minute per child utilizing the Welch Allyn Spot and PlusOptix Vision Screeners. In addition, the two Lions trained two California State University San Marcos Nursing students that were doing community service hours. The devices used are capable of screening for the following conditions: Astigmatism, Myopia, Hyperopia, Anisometropia, and Strabismus. The individual screening takes less than a minute, sometimes only seconds from a distance of three (3) feet. There is no physical contact and no eye drops are administered. The equipment provides a print-out of the results for each individual which is given to the school to disseminate to parents of children needing further testing. It is important to understand that this is only a screening and does not constitute an examination or diagnosis of vision problems. It provides Eye Professionals a starting point. The service is offered free of charge by the Lions of San Diego and /Imperial Counties, under the Lions Eye Health Program administered by KidSight USA, a nationwide Lions Clubs International pro-
One of the biggest changes in the personal computer industry is one we’ve often discussed. That for the vast majority of PC users, computer technology has not changed since the introduction of Windows 7 in late 2009. By that we mean that the computer hardware and operating systems in common use in business and home computing has remained functionally unchanged for nearly a decade. The main components of a PC; hard drive, optical drive, memory, sound, video, CPU, power supply, keyboard, mouse and external devices like printers, flash drives and back-up drives do exactly today what they did in 2009. Few believe that Windows10 is any better than Windows 7 or that Microsoft’s Office 365 is demonstrably superior to Office 2000, 2003 or 2007.
Let’s say your ten year old Toyota is comfortable, drives nicely, gets great gas mileage, has a top speed of 120MPH and you’ve never driven it faster than 90MPH. Would you buy a new Ferrari because it will go 210 MPH? Probably not, and that’s where the computer industry is today. Certainly there is the Ferrari factor among computer users. They are video editors, solids modelers, crypto-currency miners and high end gamers. These folks actually need and can use all the speed and power that technology can provide. But for the rest of us, the Dells, HPs and Lenovo’s that hype their latest and greatest PCs on the WWW and in retail stores are really selling us 2010 functionality with 2018 parts.
Our devices are already faster than they need to be for our Internet and streaming video. We already have all the storage, recording and playback devices we need. The only advantage we get from advancing technology is that it keeps making what we need ever cheaper to buy.
gram. The next screening will be at the Fallbrook STEM Academy where approximately 300 students will have their eyes screened by Lions. Members of the community and Chamber of Commerce are invited to observe what Lions do and explore opportunities to form a club in Fallbrook to facilitate this free community service. Lions Clubs International is the largest service club organization in the world. It has 1.4 million members in more than 46,000 clubs in more than 210 countries and geographical areas around the globe. Since 1917, Lions clubs have aided the blind and visually impaired, championed youth initiatives and strengthened local communities through hands-on service and humanitarian projects. Because of this fact, we and many savvy users have turned to “refurbs” as the rational alternative to buying cheaply made retail PCs. More power, better quality, choice of Windows 7 or 10 and half the price, what’s not to like? We still build new desktop computers but mainly as custom configurations. The other half of our now growing business is service, and that has also changed with the times. Many of our customers find they are able to avoid the aggravation of adapting to a new PC because we can upgrade their old PC to a full functional level at a fraction of the cost and trauma of a new PC.
Life is good and we are getting ready for that “White Knight” (of any color).
