With today being Thanksgiving, for many senior citizens around the country, it’s just another day on their calendar. As usual, many will be left alone on this, otherwise, festive family gettogether. It is particularly hard for seniors who have outlived their spouses. Doubly-hard when their grown children and grandchildren have “other plans” – plans which do not include their elderly parents. A recent 2018 survey revealed: The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

“For many seniors, the holidays are not a time of celebration and joy, but only serve as reminders of how lonely he or she may be, the friends that have passed on, the lack of family get-togethers and the inability to participate in such events.” Often, these seniors are excluded, abandoned, and isolated from family plans.
It is a widespread situation, not just here in America, but around the globe. Commonly
referred to as the ‘holiday blues,’ elderly depression during the holidays affects senior couples, widows and widowers, singles, and divorcees. A recent documentary explored the deeply-personal feelings of people living in old-age homes: “Most of whom are tricked into going there.” As research reveals, “Some children feel that their elderly parents are a financial burden. Some abandon them when they are ill.” In general, studies show that most say that they are just too
busy to care for them.
For the upcoming holiday season, many of us do not wish to think about these situations. It is just too uncomfortable to reflect upon. Many believe it is best to ignore this reality and just “sweep it all under the rug,” so that, otherwise, goodfeelings and happy-celebrations are not ruined. Blissful ignorance is often the order of the day. We sometimes pretend it’s not a problem.

Holidays for Seniors Cont. from Page 1
Yet, closing one’s eyes does not erase the fact that the holidays are often a most heartbreaking and devastating experience for many senior citizens who, sometimes, have no spouse or family to rejoice with. Worse yet, that they are neglected by family members who regard them as a bothersome burden. Such isolation and loneliness is especially painful during Thanksgiving Day, which is the beginning of the holiday season. A day when families traditionally gather around the Thanksgiving Day table and give divine thanks for the loved ones in their lives. Thanksgiving Day is only the beginning; a holiday which segues to Christmas. As researchers record the voices of the elderly, themselves, these abandoned parents still cherish and love their children regardless of any neglect. One social worker said, “It is the duty of children to look after their parents when they are old and cannot care for themselves.”
Sadly, this does not always hold true. Parents and children have the purest relationship in the beginning years, but this often changes through time. Unfortunately, in-depth records show a sad tale of the tape:
Give Us This Day Our Daily Chuckle This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!
Of course, you can’t be from Minnesota and not know a few Lena and Ole stories . . . or variations of them. But, in this day and age, it is hazardous to use any jokes about ethnic groups. Many politicians and other public figures have gotten into trouble by using ethnic jokes. It is much safer to tell a story using a lost civilization like the Hittites. You've read about the Hittites in the Bible. They no longer exist. So, with your permission, I would like to tell you a story about two Hittites named Ole and Sven. Ole's neighbor Sven had a boy, Sven Junior, who came home one day and asked, "Papa, I have da biggest feet in da third grade. Is dat becuss I'm Norvegian?" "No," said Sven, "It's because you're NINETEEN."
“Recent trends show that people would rather place their parents in old-age homes, an act which has devastating effects on the emotions of the abandoned parents.” Because the holiday season in particular is deeply associated with family, grandchildren, and happiness, it can heighten the feelings of loneliness from the aged who are sometimes left alone and are not involved. Primarily because they are considered a burden.
Complicating the problem is that, according to mental health professionals, “Many seniors do not wish to speak of their holiday blues, but for the wrong reasons. They often feel that they don’t want to dampen the mood for others, or that they do not wish to admit that they feel isolated and forgotten by family members during what should be a happy time.”
A 2018 study said that such neglect of senior citizens by family members can have deadly consequences. Regarding lack of social interaction, “Seniors that are withdrawn and lack social contact with others – especially during the height of holiday celebrations – may blame themselves for family members avoiding them. Such feelings of loneliness and isolation cause some seniors to feel that their death wouldn’t

While teenagers are the age group most associated with suicide risk, the terrible truth is that another group is killing themselves at increasingly higher rates: lonely seniors. It comes as a shock for many to learn that seniors now commit suicide twice as often as teens. “Adults aged 65 to 84 are nearly twice as likely to commit suicide as 15 to 24-year-olds,” according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. “Beyond age 85, the suicide rate is 70 percent higher. Keep in mind, seniors are unlikely to ask for help because they don’t want to be a burden to anyone.”
Regarding the so-called holidayblues which can negatively affect seniors, it is a growing social problem not just here in America. It is a problem spreading worldwide, especially in so-called civilized, advanced cultures. In Great Britain, charities have been created in an effort to curb this growing senior-citizen abandonment problem. One charity is called “Age U.K” and it was first launched back in October of 2016. Its primary function is to raise British awareness about elder loneliness during the Christmas holidays, and even year-round. The epidemic-like problem in Great Britain necessitated the

founding of another group to assist in this heart-wrenching problem. A more recent U. K. group is aptly called “Friends of the Elderly” and is committed to “Raising money to combat elderly loneliness around the holidays. A nominal donation fee will pay for an elderly person to attend a lunch and holiday Christmas party.”
Our English cousins have set a high standard for Americans to emulate. Overall, the British people have astounded the world with their pioneering work in attempting to better understand and eradicate this cruel human condition. The British have long-showed courage in facing-down problems, as opposed to ignoring them. U.K. research on elderly loneliness is not for the timid of heart. The findings can buckle the knees of any person who has a beating heart. “It is estimated that one million older British people will go an entire month without speaking to another person.” Their aged condition often isolates them, weeks at a time. A BBC television survey found that 10-percent of people over 65 years of age planned to spend Christmas alone. At 28 you don't need to tell her a story to take her to bed.
At 38 she tells you a story and takes you to bed. At 48 she tells you a story to avoid going to bed.
At 58 you stay in bed to avoid her story
At 68 if you take her to bed, that'll be a story. At 78 What story? What bed? Who the hell are you?

over 75 years of age would spend the holidays alone. Reason: “Most said it was because they didn’t want to be a burden to their families.” Here in Escondido, California, an elderly woman confessed to me, “I walk to the market almost every day. Not to buy food because I’m on a fixed income; it’s because I just want to hear the voices of other people around me.”
She has plenty of grown children, even grandchildren, but they very rarely call, let alone visit her. She is a bright, intelligent woman, full of sunshine and optimism, despite her family neglect.
As if it were not enough, many records substantiate physical abuse by the children of elderly parents. One aged woman, Mrs. Begum, a widow, grew tired of eating the same cereal that was fed to her each day. One special Christmas, with childlike excitement, she decided to cook food for herself, like she used to when her family was young; when her children looked up to her. She cooked the meal successfully, but later on -- her son found out and gave her a black eye, and a forceful admission to the old people’s center.

Later, when a special study group found out, she was interviewed by reporter, Rabia Ali, for The Express Tribune. She recalled her story (which was verified), miles away from her family, in the confines of her nursing home. The report reads: “Her lips quivered and her coal-lined eyes filled-up with tears. Her youngest son, and his wife, called her senile and would beat her up frequently on trivial matters.” The aged mother was found to be completely lucid and, in fact, very intelligent. Remarkably, she still loved her son, as only a mother can. In her own words, she told of her sacrifice in raising her children: “I made wallets and sold them to raise my seven children after my husband’s death. But once they were all married, they had their own lives. I was just in the way. A family burden.” Sadly, her attempt to re-live a precious holiday memory by preparing a modest meal for herself ended in physical abuse and abandonment. The interviewers had to take occasional breaks because the emotional tug was just too much to bear. And they wished not for the abandoned mother to see their tears.
Remarkably, she never rescinded her love for her children. In her early years, she did all in her

But, she was now 70 years old. Despite the cruelty, violence, and abandonment, she still clutched to her ideals of loving her seven children, now grown to adulthood.
Shortly after her story was documented, Mrs. Begum passed away quietly in her sleep. She was left to die in an old-age home. At only age 70, her cause of death was listed simply that her heart merely stopped beating. The nursing home staff said it was, “because of a broken heart.” Scattered on the floor beside her bed were photos of her beloved children when they were small, and vulnerable. Ms. Begum’s family photo album still was open upon her lap when she was found dead. Photos of past holidays and family dinners and gift-giving were everywhere. Her last moments were spent re-living her earlier moments of motherhood.

wrote a piece regarding Thanksgiving Day and the ensuing holiday season. He merely said, “Witnessing an elderly person eating a Thanksgiving Day meal alone is a most heart-wrenching sight. It’s almost as emotionally devastating as imagining a person all alone for the entire holidays, including the Christmas season. Put those two scenarios together and it’s almost too much to bear.” In Germany, a grocery store addressed this problem of elderly-neglect with a new advertising campaign. They profiled a true-life, heartbreaking story of an old man abandoned by his too-busy family over the holiday season. The factual scenario has already been viewed by more than 10-million viewers on YouTube. It all began when an 85-yearold-man called a radio station over the holidays to talk about his deceased wife. At first, he merely said (translated from the original German): “I miss her. I feel so alone.” A day after his anguished moment on the radio airwaves, he soon turned more cheerful. The City of Carlsbad Police Department with the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office announced today that a suspect has been identified in the 2007 murder of Jodine Serrin. On Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2007, 39-year-old Jodine Serrin was found brutally murdered in her condominium located in the 1900 block of Swallow Lane in Carlsbad. Since February 14, 2007, investigators have worked continuously to solve the murder.
Through the recent advancement of DNA matching technology and with the assistance of genealogical experts, investigators were able to match DNA evidence with suspect David Mabrito. Mabrito, a single male transient, died from suicide in 2011. He was 38years-old at the time of the crime.
The Carlsbad Police Department would like to thank all those that have assisted in this 11-year investigation. This includes but is not limited to District Attorney Summer Stephan, North County Chief District Attorney, Bill Mitchell, District Attorney Investigator Tony Johnson, Forensic Genealogists Barbara Rae-Venter and Colleen Fitzpatrick, Parabon NanoLabs, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Crime Lab and the
Federal Bureau of Investigations.
“We are thankful to provide a resolution of this case to Jodine’s family,” stated Police Chief Neil Gallucci. “We never forgot Jodine and we are grateful to have identified the person responsible for her tragic murder.”
The Serrin family asked the Police Department to relay, “Jodine taught us all with her special challenges, perseverance and love of nature. There was joy in her laughter, love in her heart and faith in her soul. The Serrin family is forever grateful to the Carlsbad Police Department for their outstanding efforts in attaining justice through resolution of this tragic case.” The Serrin’s also found support from the National Organization of Parents of Murdered Children. He doesn’t recall walking to the window, yet there he stands, feeling numb, and deeply abandoned. He looks out his modest house window and sees another old man being greeted by his grandchildren. He smiles at the sight. Perhaps fantasizing that the old man he sees through his window – is himself. The three photos actually represented several years of spending Christmas by himself. He only started to record the picture-taking three years ago.
He feels a slight tingling sensation on one arm. Then numbness. Far away, in the big city, his three grown children receive a note that their 85-year-old father has died. They break down, uncontrollably, with tears. They were far too busy with their high-powered, metropolitan jobs and lives to be with him, all those Christmases past. Their collective thoughts are to return to his small town – the town where they were raised as children -- for his funeral.
But at the moment, his three grown children fall into each other’s embrace, trying to console each other, their bodies convulsing uncontrollably. Chuckles Cont. from Page 2

To save the economy, on December 1, 2011, Congress will announce a new bill ordering the immigration department to start deporting old people (instead of illegal aliens) in order to lower the cost of Social Security and Medicare. They said that old people are easier to catch, and will not remember how to get back home! I had tears in my eyes when I thought of you. ... See you on the bus.
An Indian walks into a cafe with a shotgun in one hand and pulling a male buffalo with the other. He says to the waiter: "Want coffee."
The waiter says, "Sure Chief. Coming right up."
He gets the Indian a tall mug of coffee.....
Their sobs and cries of anguish are now unleashed. This was their Papa. This was the man who carried each home as infants from the hospital, along with their long-deceased Mother.
Suddenly, their indispensable jobs seem petty and without value. The small grandchildren now begin crying at seeing all the grownups in tears. They are too small and too young in years to understand what has happened, or even why they haven’t seen Grandpa in years. They had often asked and were quickly told: “Next Christmas. Next Christmas, we’ll see Grandpa.” Next Christmas never came.
The huge family, emotionally deeply-scarred, made the trip to their Papa’s small house, to attend to matters at hand.
When the three grown married couples, and grandchildren, opened the door and spilled into his modest home, they broke down in torrents of tears. There before them, stood the most beautiful Christmas tree imaginable. He must have spent a fortune of his fixed income to purchase it, in hopes of a family reunion. The Indian drinks the coffee down in one gulp, turns and blasts the buffalo with the shotgun, causing parts of the animal to splatter everywhere and then just walks out. The next morning the Indian returns.
He has his shotgun in one hand, pulling another male buffalo with the other.
He walks up to the counter and says to the waiter, Want coffee. The waiter says,"Whoa, Tonto! We're still cleaning up your mess from yesterday. What was all that about, anyway?" The Indian smiles and proudly says,
"Training for position in United States Congress. Come in, drink coffee, shoot the bull, leave mess for others to clean up, Disappear for rest of day." ZEN TEACHINGS
1. Do not walk behind me, for I may not lead. Do not walk ahead of me, for I may not follow. Do not walk beside me for the path is narrow. In fact, just piss off and leave me alone. 2. Sex is like air. It's not that important unless you aren't getting any.

dren surround the base of the Christmas tree.
The children marvel at the tree, set magically aglow with twinkling lights of various colors. Their Grandpa’s dining room was beautifully set with his best dinnerware, before he died. A look of mystery now gripped them as they looked upon a dining table fully set, complete with lighted candles. A wondrous aroma of Christmas foods seemed to emanate from the kitchen. Suddenly, a dark shadow appeared in the dimly-lighted room. A shadow which slowly moved forward. A shadow with most familiar features. It was their Father!
“How else could I have brought you all here, together?” he asked, sadly.
He was immediately embraced by his grown family, and his tiny grandchildren around his waist clutched and hugged him, all cheering and laughing with unreserved joy.
“GRANDPA!! GRANDPA!!” his grandchildren all shouted over-and-over in unison!
After much hugging and crying, his grown children vowed to never allow another Christmas to go by without a family rejoicing, together. In fact, there would be many intervening visits because the family decided to “adopt” Grandpa. And to never, ever . . . leave him alone again. One of the first remarks after dinner was directed to their Father: “It’s time to come home with us now, Papa. You will now live with us, and your grandchildren.” It was a Christmas like no other. If this article has touched you in any way, you may wish to be part of the solution for Senior Holiday Blues by volunteering a portion of your time and energy through your community church, temple, or one of the non-denominational agencies listed below. Please, there is still plenty of time before the holidays, so act now. You will not regret it. Here is just a sampling of agencies you may wish to contact. Perhaps one of them will be just right for you! JEWISH FAMILY SERVICE. Has an excellent program called “Volunteer On the Go.” Transportation solutions for older adults. Their website says, “Every Ride Has A Story,”
and lists examples from volunteers, like Gloria, who says of her elderly friend: “She now never misses a visit with her older brother who lives in a care facility.” And volunteer Arnie who says about his senior friend: “He depends on weekly dialysis appointments to stay healthy.” And volunteer Evelyn who says of her elderly companion: “She looks forward to meeting her two dear friends for lunch every Tuesday.” The Jewish Family Service website says: “Older adults who have made the tough decision to ‘turn in their keys’ fear losing their independence. When a person can’t drive, especially in San Diego, simple things such as medical appointments, visiting a loved one, taking a class, or attending a religious service become major life challenges.”
This great volunteer service for transportation provides training at the Jewish Family Service, located at 8804 Balboa Ave., San Diego, CA 92123. Tele. (858) 637-3050. If the “Volunteers On the Go” program is not right for you, there is also the “Bikkur Holim Friendly Visitor Program.” The website describes it as such: “Bikkur Holim Friendly Visitor program matches friendly volunteers with Jewish isolated and ill individuals. Volunteers make a one-year commitment to visit with their match for approximately four hours a month, providing conversations, support, friendship, and a connection to the Jewish community.” ST. Big changes in Sacramento
The Legislature will convene on December 3rd for one day to swear in new members and start the 20192020 two-year session, that will begin in earnest on January 7th.
Big changes are coming to Sacramento. First of all, Gavin Newsom will be our new Governor, with a partisan balance in the Legislature that has shifted more heavily toward the Democrats, who will have a two-thirds super-majority in both houses.
Politics aside, this region will have unprecedented clout in the new session. Senator Toni Atkins (D – San Diego), will remain Senate President pro Tempore, Senator Pat Bates (R – Laguna Niguel – whose district includes northwest San Diego County) will retain her position as Senate Republican Leader, and Assemblyman Todd Gloria (D – San Diego), remains Majority Whip. Lastly, I have been selected by my Republican colleagues to become Assembly Republican Leader, replacing Assemblyman Brian Dahle who is stepping down. Though we may disagree on some issues, this leadership team has an excellent personal and working relationship, and I look forward to

joining them as we move forward to address the great issues facing our state and region. These include transportation infrastructure, water, housing, wildland/urban interface and disaster preparation and response, healthcare and many others. While these issues can be contentious, they are often open to bipartisan solutions.
Though Southern California has been California’s population center for decades, this has often not been reflected in legislative leadership, which in the past has frequently come from Northern California. At the very least, the concerns of Southern California will be receiving increased attention in the new session. I am humbled by the support I received from the voters on November 6, and I look forward to continuing to serve as your voice in Sacramento. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow
It Takes All Types
The development of the printed word is one of the world’s most influential inventions. Regardless of your religious beliefs or philosophy, the first printings of the Bible in the western world was the catalyst for spurring wide-spread education and literacy, bringing the nations of the world closer together.
Printing with movable type can be traced back to 1040 AD, invented by a Chinaman, Bi Sheng, who began using movable wood blocks to print. In 1392, the Koreans were using movable copper type to print. But the dawn of modern-day typesetting began in the mid-1400 by Johannes Gutenberg of Mainz, Germany.
together.
Gutenberg never profited from his invention. In fact, it caused him to end up bankrupt. While under development, he had financial problems, and to make matters worse, his financial backer, Johann Fust, became impatient and successfully sued Gutenberg, forcing him to relinquish all claims to his printing process. Fust went on to make a fortune from Bible sales. Gutenberg died in 1468 broke and in relative obscurity. One of America’s most famous early printers was Benjamin Franklin, who began as an apprentice to his older brother. His most famous printing was “Poor Richard’s Almanac, which was a pamphlet publication of wit, humor, and biting editorializing against the British before the Revolutionary War.
The printed word is the most effective weapon used against tyranny, as well as conveying great thought and ideas. Here in the United States, one of the greatest example of the printed word is the Declaration of Independence, as well as the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. By printing on a mass scale, early Americans were able to read in detail what our government was about and how it worked. Without the printed word, ideas and laws are only open to interpretation. The idea of “literature” would hardly exist without the words being put down on paper – and, today, the computer screen. Today, Johannes Gutenberg’s name is barely remembered, yet he remains one of the world’s most influential figures in history. True, that if it wasn’t Gutenberg, someone else would have come up with the idea of movable type, but he’s the one who did it first. Someone has to be first.
Tom Morrow's books are available at Amazon.com in soft-cover or via Kindle E-mail.
Unlike his Oriental counterparts, Gutenberg’s process made printing practical, which led to a revolution in mass communications. Until the advancements of the computer, Gutenberg’ method remained the principal way to print until the late 20th century. Gutenberg’s method centered around the key innovation involving the making of a punch-stamped mold that could cast large amount of metal type with precision for a new kind of press using oil-based ink. His first printing job for mass distribution was 180 copies of the Bible in 1455. Until that time, the Bible was painstakingly done by hand by clergymen, taking as long as 20 years just to produce one volume. That first Gutenberg edition was printed in Latin. His technology spread throughout Europe and by 1520, more than 200 different editions of the Bible had been produced. While Gutenberg printed his first volumes in Latin, printers began producing other books, posters, simple news announcements in their native languages, which made books on all subjects readily available to not just scholars, but to the general population. This resulted in people becoming more literate. News and ideas spread quickly and widely, bringing the world closer

Alzheimers and Dementia Linked to Gum Disease
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and the South Carolina School of Medicine both confirm the link between the bacteria "biofilm" on your teeth (plaque) and diseases including pancreatic cancer, diabetes, and dementia are much more serious than just the obvious symptoms including inflammed gums and bad breath. Oral inflammation leads to amyloid deposition producing neuritc plaques in the brain. These plaques promote senility and lead to Alzheimers Disease.
Additionally, researchers at the South Carolina School of Medicine showed that the worse a patient's periodontal disease gets, the bigger risk of stroke. Even "mild" gum disease can double your stroke risk. In another study scientists at John Hopkins has now found a particular type of mouth bacteria causes rheumatoid arthritis.
Infection of a root tip can TRIPLE your risk of heart disease! Another discovery revealed that those that skipped dental check-ups are almost 90% more likely to come down with bacterial pneumonia compared to those that have checkups twice a year. It's become pretty clear that your dental health should be right up there with the same degree of importance as having your heart checked or keeping tabs on your blood pressure. And if your gums bleed, are swollen or hurt when you brush your teeth, or your teeth are loose
or have a receding gumline, you need to see your dentist immediately.

Aside from seeing your dentist twice a year for professional cleaning, flossing once a day and brushing at least twice a day is a must. The Elizabeth Hospice recognizes the impact childhood grief has on our entire community. With support from generous donors like you, we are able to help children have a brighter future. An example was that Hannia’s dad died when she was only 14 years old. Her sadness was overwhelming. She just gave up. She stopped caring about school; her grades dropped. “I was in a deep hole. My friends and family didn’t know how to talk to me. I felt like I was all alone.” Fortunately, Hannia found the help she needed at The Elizabeth Hospice’s Teen Grief Support Group. Here, Hannia connects with other kids who are experiencing similar struggles. Teen Grief Support Groups are offered free of charge to all who are grieving, including families who do not have a patient affiliation with The Elizabeth Hospice. These groups are part of our comprehensive children’s bereavement program, the only one of its kind in our community. As a local, independent not-for-profit, we rely on the generosity of people like you to make these much-needed services possible. San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy is Asking for Donations – Jeff Spitko, Director, San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy writes: “Did you have a favorite teddy bear when you were little? I did. His name was Max and we were inseparable. Max had one essential job; he protected me. He protected me from the monsters I thought were under my bed and comforted me when I work up frightened from a bad dream. Fortunately, even with max by my side, I was never in
any real danger. But bears aroundthe world are in trouble. They need our help, and they need it now. Decades of poaching, wildlife trafficking, and habitat loss have devastated wild populations. And for most bear species their numbers are declining rapidly. San Diego Zoo Global and its partners are working to save bears across the globe. I’m excited to introduce you to one of those partners, Free the Bears, an incredible organization working to rescue and protect wild bears from the illegal wildlife trade. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing more about this important partnership, as well as what you can do to help these bears. We have dozens of conservation partners around the world, but without a doubt, you are the most important one! You make hope for endangered species possible, and we’re deeply grateful for your support. With Giving Tuesday coming up on November 27th, we would be grateful for any donations that are received for our conservation efforts.” Contact the Wildlife Conservancy at P.O. Man About Town Cont. from Page 4 That means what had been a s t r o n g Conservative council will now likely be a more Liberal council. Mayor Mac, new council member C o n s u e l a Martinez, and Olga Diag represent the Liberal viewpoint.
I think one thing you’ll see rather quickly is items that Olga has long wanted to be placed on the agenda for discussion and action will now likely make it on to the agenda. There had been a requirement of two votes to get an item on the agenda. With Olga outnumbered 4-1 she never had the votes to even get an item discussed. I never agreed with that policy. I might not agree with the direction of a policy item being discussed but I always believed it ought to be brought forward for discussion.
I’m looking forward to learning more about Mayor Mac and his plans for the city, should the vote count confirm he, indeed, is our new Mayor. Not sure what Ed Gallo’s plans are now that he returns to the private sector. I tip my hat to him for the many years he’s served Escondido. He worked for The Paper for about six months a number of years ago and it was clear to me that his heart was with the city. We would be out making calls together and he’d see a city project he had worked on, or
see a need for council action on another project - or wonder aloud what could and should be done to solve this problem or that problem. Didn’t always agree with Ed but never doubted his love and commitment to the city of Escondido. Thanks, Ed. You did well.

These are two very special people that I hope you get to know personally as they will enrich your life with knowledge, with Indian lore and legend, and with factual material about all things Indian. These two gents could pair up and present a series of lectures on a variety of subjects, all of which would be absolutely fascinating. I shall suggest it to them. Stay tuned.

Minnesota FARM KID in the Marines (CAMP PENDLETON MARINE CORPS RECRUIT TRAINING) Dear Ma and Pa,
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick before all of the places are filled. I was restless at first because you get to stay in bed till nearly 6 a.m. But I am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do before breakfast is smooth your cot, and shine some things. No hogs to slop, feed to itch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically nothing.
Bowser, a 2-year-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix, is a handsome boy looking for a loving home to call his own. Going on walks and playing in the kiddie pool are his favorite activities. Bowser is shy and cautious with new people and situations, so he will need a loving, patient family to help him adjust. A mellow home with adults or older, respectful children would be best to help him gain confidence. If you have another dog at home, please bring your pooch with you to meet Bowser. His adoption fee includes his neuter, permanent microchip identification, current vaccinations, 30 days worry free insurance from Trupanion Insurance and a certificate for a free veterinary exam! Bowser is available for adoption at San Diego Humane Society’s Escondido Campus at 3450 E Valley Parkway. Please call (619) 299-7012 for more information.
Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water.
Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon, etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the two city boys that live on coffee. Their food, plus yours, holds you until noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk much. We go on 'route marches,' which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A 'route march' is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.
The sergeant is like a school teacher. He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and colonels just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none. This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home. All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even load your own cartridges. They come in boxes. Then we have what they call handto-hand combat training. You get to
wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake. I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6" and 130 pounds and he's 6'8" and near 300 pounds dry. Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get onto this setup and come stampeding in. Your loving daughter, Alice

Leif said, "Don't jump, little lemming." And he gave the lemming to his assistant who taught it how to wade across instead of jumping off a cliff. The moral is "If Leif hands you a lemming, make lemmings wade."

reminder that this Christmas will be different because someone will not be there.
Pastor Tom Fry (Retired) Church of the Nazarene Opening Christmas Boxes
I’m writing while my mind and body are still adjusting to the recent time change. It’s amazing how turning the clocks back an hour can affect the routine of our lives. For some it is much more serious. There is even a name for it, Seasonal Affective Disorder, acronymed to SAD.
There is another seasonal sadness, the prospect of facing the first holiday season after losing a loved one. Some call it “Blue Christmas.” It is the season of sad surprises. Opening a drawer, a cabinet or a closet and there is a memory, a reminder. And the grief starts all over again. Then it’s Christmas. Opening the boxes of lights, ornaments, manger sets, all the things that say Christmas to your family. And subtly, the
My dad’s job kept him away from home a lot, but he rarely missed being home for Christmas. He died suddenly one March and, though no one said it, we were hoping to avoid Christmas that year, let it pass, not really face it. My mom was hospitalized on December 23, so we thought we had dodged the bullet of facing Christmas with someone missing. When we gathered a year later, there were more changes. My grandfather had died and my wife and I had our first child, the first grandchild in the family. Still, it was not easy. There was residual sadness from the previous year and new sadness that wasn’t overcome by the joy of a new generation. But the next one was easier and the one after that easier. There have been other sadnesses, but we have always opened the Christmas Boxes.
The season of sad surprises is also the season of promises. One of God’s promises is that He will never leave us nor forsake us. He will not forget us. When your journey takes you through the season of sad surprises, don’t forget the season of promises. God has not forgotten you. He has not left you. He will be with you.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Happy Thanksgiving San Marcos
Thanksgiving is the time of year when we give thanks for the good things in life that make it special, including the privileges and rights that define us as Americans. Let each of us take a moment to give thanks for the men and women in military service to our country at home and around the globe and also for family, friends and others who give meaning to our lives.
community, young and old, from all walks of life, who make San Marcos a community that fosters goodwill and generosity. As we approach the holiday season let us also remember there are many whose lives are less than whole and dedicate ourselves to being sensitive to their needs and making this a better community for all who call San Marcos home.
This year we have much to be On behalf of the City of San Marcos, I thankful for. We especially give wish you and your families the very thanks for the citizens in our best this Thanksgiving.

advantages of the “refurbs” vs. brand new retail PCs ad nauseam and, by now, we can safely assume that our regular readers are well insulated against the treachery of those commissioned computer sales clerks that “farm boy” the rubes in the “Big Box” stores.
Paul & Nome Van Middlesworth, The Computer Factory
www. thecomputerfactory.net "San Diego's Best Computer Store 2017-18" Union Tribune readers poll
Why your next computer will be a “Refurb.” Part II
Last week we discussed the virtues of “Enterprise refurb” notebook PCs. Today we turn our attention to Desktops. Our mission, as always, is to free our readers from the misery of joining the throng of mindless bottom feeders that shuffle the aisles sniffing and poking at the Dell and HP branded Chinese cheapies that pollute the computer shelves at Fry’s, Costco, Best Buy and other “Big Box” retailers. We have already discussed the
Since we already know that your next PC is going to be a “refurb” we only need to discuss the various types. There are three, notebook (laptop), desktop and AIO (All In One). For pure flexibility you can’t beat a notebook. Take it with you wherever you go and then hook it up to a nice big monitor, keyboard and mouse when you’re at home. It can do literally everything that a desktop does, but it can travel if it needs to. Portability can be a godsend when you face a hospital stay or an emergency trip. The desktop is the staple in business environments. Management likes the stability of having permanent workstations that are securely connected and protected. Employees might be tempted to take a notebook PC home over the weekend because little Johnny’s Mac Book went “sneakers up,” but no one is going to try and sneak a desktop past the bosses office. Many home users also like the idea of having a permanent
“workstation securely rooted in the “home office.”
The AIO is the lesser known cousin of the other two. It combines the computer and large screen monitor into a single WiFi system. With an inexpensive wireless keyboard and mouse and it makes a very attractive home or office PC without wires and cables to connect. Very clean and simple.
You already know that “refurbs” give you better quality and higher reliability, speed, storage and memory than you get for twice the price in retail. You also know you have your choice of Windows 7 or 10 Professional on our PCs. What will amaze you when you visit our shop is
just how inexpensive it can be. A high end i7 workstation for less than $400? A complete AIO workstation for less than $300. A “guest” home or office desktop workstation (WITH A FREE MONITOR) for under $200? We spent Thanksgiving week getting Refurberville restocked and ready just so you could take that “Black Friday Special” right back to where you got it from before it’s too late and come on in and get yourself a real PC. Then you can buy someone special a real nice Christmas present with the money you saved. We wish you all the best at Thanksgiving and yes, we still say MERRY CHRISTMAS here at The Computer Factory.
