(1) TRUE OR FALSE: THE PILGRIM’S FIRST SO-CALLED THANKSGIVING DAY WAS NEVER CALLED “THANKSGIVING” As shocking as this may be
to many people today, this first statement happens to be true. The so-called “Thanksgiving Day” celebration by the early Pilgrims back in 1621 was actually called a “Harvest Festival” or a “Harvest Feast” to celebrate the first successful crop harvest in the New World. However, since Pilgrim members were deeply religious and motivated by religious beliefs and deep faith in God, they used this first Harvest Feast in giving thanks and prayers for blessings bestowed upon them by a gracious God.

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving Day as both a religious and secular holiday. (Note: Thanksgiving services and feasts were routine in what became the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607 with the first permanent settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, holding a thanksgiving celebration in 1610. Nevertheless, the Pilgrim’s first thanksgiving celebration of 1621 is traditionally the one which most Americans identify with, in their annual observance of the holiday.

2) TRUE OR FALSE: TURKEY WAS (NOT) EATEN AT THE PILGRIM’S FIRST THANKSGIVING? This question had to be asked. Why? Primarily because the wrong answer has become one of the biggest misconceptions on the worldwide internet (social media, blogs, various information websites, etc.) which continue to perpetuate a longstanding myth. Correct answer is false, because the Pilgrims did, in fact, eat plenty of turkey on that first Thanksgiving Day celebration – despite much misinformation that they did not. How do we know this to be fact?
Because rare, surviving documents by the Pilgrims, themselves, clearly record these trivial facts in great detail and clarity, which all reputable historians are in full agreement. For example, English Pilgrim, William Bradford (1590-1657) was a signatory to the Mayflower Compact and went on to serve as Governor of the Plymouth Colony intermittently for about 30 years between 1621 and 1657. Bradford’s journal called “Of Plymouth Plantation,” covered the years from 1620 to 1646. He recorded that plenty of turkey was eaten that day.

I couldn't help but over-hear two guys in their mid-twenties while sitting at the bar last night. One of the guys says to his buddy: "Man you look tired."
His buddy says: “Man I'm exhausted. My girlfriend and I have sex all the time. She's after me 3 and 4 times a day, I just don't know what to do." A fellow about our age, sitting a couple of stools down, also overheard the conversation.

As governor, and actual eyewitness who attended this historic first Thanksgiving, William Bradford clearly recorded, in his own words: “And besides waterfowl there was great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many. They four in one day killed as much fowl as, with little help beside, served the company almost a week.”
So, despite what you might read on the internet, or any place else to the contrary, the world’s foremost authorities all agree that the Pilgrims did in fact eat turkey on their first Thanksgiving.
(3) HOW MANY PILGRIM WOMEN WERE AT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION OF 1621? A. 4 B. 30 C. Over 200 Sadly, the correct answer is “A.” Only four adult, married women lived to attend the Pilgrim’s very first Thanksgiving Day dinner (Harvest Feast). According to surviving documents from the Pilgrims themselves, five women survived the first brutal winter conditions, but one of them died (Mrs. Katherine Carver), thus leaving only four: Eleanor Billington, Mary Brewster, Elizabeth Hopkins, and Susanna White Winslow. Many women died of scurvy, contagious diseases, and exposure to severe winter conditions which facilitated colds, pneumonia, and

other forms of illness.
For the record, there was a total of 53 colonists at that first Thanksgiving Day celebration: 22 men, 4 adult married women, and 27 teens and children. Approximately 90 Wampanoag Indians celebrated with the Pilgrims, bringing with them a huge abundance of food. The feast was cooked by the four adult Pilgrim women along with young daughters and male and female servants. (To give the reader proper perspection: There was originally a total of 102 passengers onboard the Mayflower when it set sail from England: 74 males and 28 females. While no women would die during the Mayflower’s 66-day ocean voyage, most perished after their arrival in the New World due to severe conditions, previously mentioned.)
(4) WHICH EATING UTENSIL WAS (NOT) USED AT THE PILGRIM’S FIRST THANKSGIVING? A. Spoons. B. Forks. C. Knives. Correct answer is “B” forks. Although forks trace back to the ancient Greeks who used twopronged forks to secure their meat while being cut, no forks were used at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving celebration in 1621. Only spoons, knives, and fingers were commonly used during the period.

Among the early colonists, the fork was introduced 12 years later, on June 25, 1633, by Governor John Winthrop of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, but only in small numbers. The fork did not really become popular until the 1700s in the New World.
AMUSING FACT: When the fork was finally used by the colonists, it was often called the “split spoon” at the dinner table. The fork was sometimes called “evil” by some members of the clergy back then, because it resembled ancient images of the Devil’s pitchfork!
(5) WHICH ITEM BELOW WAS (NOT) EATEN AT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING IN 1621? A. Cranberries. B. Pumpkin Pie. C. Lobsters & clams. Correct answer is “B” for pumpkin pie. There was no pumpkin pie, although pumpkins were definitely eaten at the first Thanksgiving Day in 1621. Why weren’t there any pumpkin pies on that first historic celebration with the Native Americans? Because the pilgrims did not have ovens at the time.

This Thanksgiving Tale is No Turkey - Once upon a time, as storytellers like to say, chances are that if you had turkey on your American Thanksgiving table, it came from a Valley Center ranch whose owners claimed they had the largest turkey farm in the world. Documentation in the archives of the Valley Center History Museum reveal that more than 2,000 acres housed the Mizpah Rancho turkey operation which raised and processed up to 150,000 turkeys a year and boasted a freezer that could hold 40,000 pounds of turkey. The turkey story starts in the 1930s when the Compas brothers, Steve

well as with the Pilgrims. Also, members of the Wampanoag tribes taught the Pilgrims how to plant corn, and fish, as well as how to catch lobster, eel, clams, etc. All of these items were eaten at the first Thanksgiving celebration as recorded and preserved in historical archival records today.
(6) HOW LONG DID THE FIRST “THANKSGIVING DAY” CELEBRATION LAST? A. One day. B. Two days. C. Three days. Correct answer is “C” three days! Unlike today, when Thanksgiving is a one-day event, there was such an abundance of food brought by the Native American tribes that the feast lasted a full three days! The most abundant meat at the Pilgrim’s first Thanksgiving celebration was, by far, turkey and deer (venison). As recorded: “At which time, amongst other recreations, we exercised our arms, and many Indians coming amongst us, and among the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five deer, which they brought to the plantation and bestowed on our governor, and upon our captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of
and James, began acquiring parcels of land along Lilac Road. Their turkey empire eventually reached 2,189 acres including a secondary farm on Lake Wohlford Road. The mammoth operation consisted of hatcheries, brooders, a feed mill, processing plant, and freezers. They dredged land for a lake that attracted ducks, geese and aquatic birds of all kinds. And Mizpah was not the only turkey farm in Valley Center; there were others, although considerably smaller.
Along with multiple photos of the Lilac Road operation, the History Museum collection includes original plastic bags in which the frozen turkeys were wrapped. The brand names were Mizpah and Palomar. Seeking to expand, the Compas brothers built auxiliary turkey processing plants in the Riverside County towns of Corona and Norco, and in eastern San Diego County at Ramona which was beginning to boast of its own turkey farms. It was Ramona, however, that optimized its turkey reputation by celebrating Turkey Day and crowning a Turkey Queen with a dress made of turkey features (no, this is not fiction). Said to be wealthy, the Compas brothers sold Mizpah Rancho in 1951 whose new owner resold the farm to an investment company in 1959. The operation apparently was still successful in 1961 when it was featured in Southern California Rancher, a regional farm magazine. By 1976, however, years of neglect
God, we are so far from want that we often wish you, partakers of our plenty.”
Turkey was also an abundant and popular meat at the three-day Thanksgiving celebration. There was so much turkey that it lasted them a full week (long after the celebration was over!)
(7) WHICH U. S. PRESIDENT REFUSED TO CELEBRATE THANKSGIVING DAY? A. George Washington B. Thomas Jefferson C. Abraham Lincoln
As shocking as that question may sound, the correct answer is "B" Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson refused to celebrate, or even recognize, Thanksgiving Day as a national day of observance because he steadfastly believed in the "separation of Church and State." Since Thanksgiving Day centers around giving prayers of thanksgiving blessings, etc., Jefferson believed such a day of prayer and divine reflection violated the First Amendment. Jefferson thought it best that if Thanksgiving Day was to be enacted, that it was better to be a state holiday, and certainly not a federal or U. S. holiday.

Abraham Lincoln. This question can be confusing because our first George President, S. U. Washington, made a “proclamation” that the American people should celebrate Thanksgiving Day (offering thanksgiving to God) And other U. S. annually. Presidents continued the tradition every year after Washington.
But it wasn’t until our 16th U. S. President, Abraham Lincoln, who formerly, and officially, made Thanksgiving Day a National Holiday.
On October 3, 1863, Lincoln’s proclamation officially stated, in part: “ . . . to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”
(9) WAS IT A WOMAN OR A MAN WHO HELPED CONVINCE A U. S. PRESIDENT TO MAKE THANKSGIVING DAY A NATIONAL HOLIDAY? A. Man B. Woman Correct answer is “B” for woman. It was a woman behind the history of Thanksgiving becoming a national holiday. Though some may have endorsed the sentiment, few acted upon their emotions. The woman who wrote “Mary Had a Little Lamb” is also the person responsible for helping to make Thanksgiving Day an official holiday. After relentlessly petitioning

and writing letters to the U. S. Government for over 17 years, writer Sarah Josepha Hale (1788 – 1879) finally succeeded in convincing President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 to make Thanksgiving Day a formal annual holiday for the entire country. Sarah Josepha Hale died at the great age of 90, having achieved her lifelong ambition.
By the way, the first Pilgrim baby born after the Mayflower arrived in New England was also a female: a baby girl, named Virginia Dare. As the Hand of Providence would have it, the infant’s very surname “Dare” was a most appropriate one for such a infant to be born with; a name that – in reality -- would dare to face down adversity, struggle, and embrace the boldness necessary to survive a most hostile environment in which she grew up. (10) WHICH U. S. STATE EATS THE MOST TURKEY ON THANKSGIVING DAY? A. Massachusetts. B. New York. C. California.
Correct answer is "C" California. According to the National Consumer Marketing Statistics, the state of California consumes more turkey every Thanksgiving than any other state.

After much prayer and consideration, they concluded that the squirrels were predestined to be there, and they shouldn't interfere with God's divine will. At the Baptist church the squirrels had taken an interest in the Baptistery. The deacons met and decided to put a water-slide on the

Does California Owe You Money?
The state could owe you money. The holiday season is fast approaching and many are suffering from severe economic distress resulting from the COVID-19 shutdowns, so take a few minutes to see if you have some money coming to you. The State of California is sitting on almost $10 billion in unclaimed properties. Some of that money could be yours. Under California’s Unclaimed Property Law, banks, insurance companies and other businesses are required to transfer property to the Controller’s office if it goes unclaimed over a specified period of time, usually three years. Bank accounts, stocks, bonds, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, wages, and the contents of safe deposit boxes are common types of unclaimed property. Funds are held for as long as it takes to reunite the property with its rightful owner, so the pot keeps growing simply because many do not search for the property they may have coming.
Checking to see if you have unclaimed funds is easy. Visit the State’s Controller’s unclaimed property website (claimit.ca.gov) and simply type in your name and see if you are listed. If it looks like you have some funds coming to you, you can file a claim immediately if the value is less than $5,000. Higher amounts require you to mail a form and takes longer to process. Also, please remember that there is no
charge to retrieve your property from the State Controller – so watch out for scams that try to charge for this free service.
Thousands of people have received their unclaimed properties over the ears, valued at over $23 million. You could have been one of them. So don’t let the state keep funds that may rightfully belong to you., – visit the Controller’s website today at claimit.ca.gov, or call (800) 992-4647. We Can Do Both
Throughout the past seven months, I’ve tried to follow the facts and the science. I’ve listened to our public health officials and the great work they’ve done. I’ve tried to get as much information as possible when it comes to this virus and I must say, I am concerned about the increase in positive cases. As the cases increase, it’s vital we have the available hospital capacity. People need to observe the safety protocolsdistancing, masking and sanitization.
I do hope everyone keeps in mind the balance that is needed, including the socio-economic impacts. We have strip clubs open and churches are closed to in-person services…that just doesn’t make sense. We still have many kids without the option to going to school in-person. That is not optimal. We have Rady Children’s hospital reporting a substantial increase in suicide attempts, physical abuse and sexual abuse.
We know it’s going to be like this until we have a vaccine. This is the new normal. We are getting some great news about potential vaccines, but we also
know it’s going to be a long time until it’s completely effective. In the meantime, we need to learn to live safely with this virus. We should allow all businesses the same opportunities to remain open, while following all the safety protocols. We should protect the most vulnerable. Some people are trying to frame this as a choice between opening businesses or saving lives. I believe we can do both. We can save lives AND open businesses.

Native Americans -- in particular - don't take too kindly to having their 'wings clipped.' One miserable day when my pupils first took in the filaments of early morning, I moaned in pain and cursed my existence. Then, one magic day, a kind patient across the hall brought me my very first copy of Lyle E. Davis' THE PAPER. I read the chuckles and my laughter could be heard down the hospital halls. It was that loud. Scared the cider out of my doctors who came running to my bedside! When they found out that the cause of my sudden 'turn in life' was a newspaper, well, they just stood and looked at each other! The orthopedist quipped, "Hell, maybe we should have this damned newspaper in all the patients' rooms!" It was only a matter of time that the doctors discovered a small stack of THE PAPER under my pillow. When it came time for my injections on my stomach I began crying all over again, then one of the doctors got a bright idea: "Let him hold the stack of those newspapers." They did. And I hugged them and stopped crying. The doctors knew. The ophthalmalogist who saved my eyes, the orthopedic surgeon who rebuilt my leg with titanium, the specialist who first discovered the hematoma that bled in my brain, well, in short, all of them knew . . . they knew that laughter can sometimes be the best medicine the world has ever known. And THE PAPER gave me that medicine each and every Thursday!
Once, when my physical therapist took me outside for the first time to practice walking, she asked me, "White Eagle, where do you want to go first?" That was an easy question for me. "Take me out to the front entrance, where the newspaper racks are," I nearly begged.
She walked me slowly, holding onto me with her arms. When I got within 10' of the stack of papers, I excitedly said, "Now let me go, let me walk the rest of the way by myself, please . . . " With great apprehension, she slowly let go and I slowly walked -- teetering now and then, which caused her to gasp -- and I slowly made my way, like a small child, and picked up my own copy of THE PAPER -by myself!
As melodramatic as that moment may seem to you, it was my first moment of liberation, my first donning of wings, and I heard myself say: "I want to live. I want to live. I no longer wish to die!"

Baptistery and let the squirrels drown themselves. The squirrels liked the slide and unfortunately, knew instinctively how to swim, so twice as many squirrels showed up the following week.
The Lutheran church decided that they were not in a position to harm any of God's creatures. So, they humanely trapped their squirrels and set them free near the Baptist church. Two weeks later the squirrels were back when the Baptists took down the water-slide The Episcopalians tried a much more unique path by setting out pans of whiskey around their church in an effort to kill the squirrels with alcohol poisoning They sadly learned how much damage a band of drunk squirrels can do,

Ted Vallas: A Man For All Reasons
One of my most unforgettable characters I have known in my eight decades on this good earth was Oceanside and Carlsbad entrepreneur Ted Vallas. Unless you live in Southern California there’s a good chance you’ve never heard of him, but Ted was the epitome of a self-made man. Actually, several self-made men.
But the Catholic church came up with a more creative strategy! They baptized all the squirrels and made them members of the church. Now they only see them at Christmas and Easter. And not much was heard from the Jewish synagogue. They took the first squirrel and circumcised him. They haven't seen a squirrel since.
A great philosopher once said, (it may have been my very own self): "Be what you is, not what you isn't. Cause when you is what you isn't You isn't what you is." Telling a person to calm down is about like baptizing a cat.
Prayer is the original wireless communication.
My doctor asked if anyone in my family suffered from mental illness. I said, "No, we all seem to enjoy it." I thought growing old would take longer. Camping: where you spend a small fortune to live like a homeless person. Just once, I want a username and password prompt to say: "close enough."
Being an adult is the dumbest thing I have ever done. I'm a multitasker. I can listen, ignore and forget all at the same time!
Went to an antique show and people were bidding on me. Sometimes it takes me all day to get nothing done.
My heart says chocolate and wine, but my jeans say, please, please, please, eat a salad!
My spouse says I have 2 faults. I don't listen and...something else.
While in elementary school, Ted began working to help support his widowed mother and family six brothers and sisters. He still managed to continue in school, becoming a standout in football, basketball and baseball.
In 1940, when it became obvious the United States would soon be at War, Ted joined the Navy, qualifying for flight training in Pensacola, Fla. While in training, he made the air base’s football team as a halfback. He played alongside bigger and older college athletes, with one or two former professional players.
Before Ted could finish his pilot training, he and most of his classmates were commandeered as crewmembers aboard the recently-launched USS Wasp, at that time the Navy’s newest carrier. What was supposed to be a temporary duty for the “shakedown” cruise, became a permanent duty station.
“The Navy needed deck hands more than pilots. If they didn’t have sailors to man carriers, pilots wouldn’t have anything to land on,” Ted said, chuckling in his recollections.
One of the first missions for the Wasp was to cruise to northern Scotland to pick up a number of British “Spitfire” fighter planes. They were loaded via crane and the Wasp headed for Malta destined for the Royal Air Force base on Malta. Officially, America hadn’t entered WWII, hence the “Spitfire” mission was a secret. A few weeks later, Ted and the Wasp had gone through the Panama Canal and were cruising in the Pacific. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought the U.S. into the War. Ted found himself a gunner on a
two-man TBF torpedo bomber, attached to squadron VT-7 (torpedo squadron 7).
“One day we were mustered and told we were being split-up to form a new squadron, VT-8,” Ted recalled. “I became a crewman in VT-8, which was assigned to the USS Hornet.”
During the infamous Battle of Midway, Ted’s former squadron, VT-7, was wiped out without one of the squadron’s dozens of torpedoes hitting a Japanese ship. Only one crewmember survived. Pilot Ens. George Gay floated on a life raft while watching the epic naval battle take place. During the war Ted attained the rate of Chief Petty Officer and became the youngest CPO in the Navy. After the War Ted enrolled in college, primarily for the purpose of playing football (halfback). After a year or so, Ted ended up in San Diego. He played for a short time as a member of the San Diego Padres, then a minor league team of the Pacific Coast League. By age 30, Ted figured he was getting a little too old for professional baseball so he began a career in business. In telling his long story, which of Ted’s more than 30 businesses do I tell you about? At one time he owned or salvaged at least seven golf resorts; designed golf courses in the Virgin Islands, England, Ireland, France, Holland, and Morocco where he built a personal course designed for the king of that North African nation.
In the fifties, one of Ted’s most successful acquisitions was the El Camino Country Club in Oceanside. He staged one of the West coast’s first PGA golf tournaments and would go on to resurrect at least four more golf resorts in Southern California. In the sixties he built the Olympic Club Resort & Spa in Carlsbad. Ted learned how to fly helicopters, and later bought a small commuter airline from American Airlines, operating it out of San Diego’s Lindbergh Field. I first met Ted when I helped him write his autobiography, “Life is an Opportunity!” I then worked with him for the next 11 years to get another airline off the ground. And, he did it, sort of …
California Pacific Airlines actually flew one 50-passenger jet on a daily schedule between Carlsbad, San Jose, Phoenix, and Las Vegas the month of November, 2018. But a succession of governmental obstacles as well as a lack of finance grounded CPA. But to the end Ted maintained his dogged pursuit of one last goal to his multi-layered business legacy. Unfortunately, Ted died Friday, Nov. 13, falling short of his 100th birthday next March 11. His nephew, T.G. Vallas, will continue his uncle’s quest to re-establish a scheduled airline to fly out of Carlsbad airport.
I can truly say Ted was one of my life’s most unforgettable characters. He was a talented guy, a good friend and one for the history books.

Financial Moves for the Recently Divorced
Divorce is common in our society, but that doesn’t make it any easier to navigate. If you’ve recently finalized a divorce, you’ve likely been coping with uncertainty and tension, but you can still avoid turning an already difficult situation into one that’s even more challenging. How? By making the right financial and investment moves, including the following:
Establish your separate financial presence.Even when you were married, you and your spouse might have maintained some separate accounts. But if you only had joint accounts, now is the time to open your own checking, savings and credit accounts. Update your budget. It’s likely your budget needs updating. Your household income may be lower or may need to be adjusted for alimony or child support (paid or received). Additionally, your living expenses may have shifted, either higher because you’re no longer splitting
expenses such as housing or utilities, or possibly lower because you're no longer supporting your ex’s spending habits. Understanding your new budget will help you feel better informed about your financials options and more in control of your new situation. Prioritize emergency savings. Divorce is expensive and may have depleted your savings. To get back on your feet, you may want to build an easily accessible source of funds for unexpected drops in income and/or spikes in expenses. If you’re not retired, you may want to keep three to six months’ worth of expenses in emergency savings, although even much smaller amounts can boost your feelings of financial security.
Evaluate your retirement plan contributions. When you were married, you may have been counting on sharing resources and expenses with your spouse in retirement. But now, you may be solely responsible for your retirement, so if you can afford it, you may want to ramp up your retirement plan contributions. You may want to consult a financial professional about setting and achieving new goals. Think about Social Security.Your divorce could play a role in the benefits you can receive. Once you are eligible for benefits, if you were married at least 10 years and you
haven’t remarried, you might be able to receive up to 50% of your ex-spouse’s benefits, offset by your own benefit. If your ex passes away and you haven’t remarried (or you remarry only after age 60), you could receive 100% of their benefit in place of your own. This could be beneficial if your ex-spouse had a higher income or spent longer in the labor force. Since rules can be complicated, contact your local Social Security office to better understand your situation, and keep a record of your ex’s Social Security number. Review your beneficiary designations and legal documents. You’ll likely need to revise the beneficiary designations on your retirement accounts and life insurance policies. These designations carry a lot of weight and can even supersede the instructions in your will. And,
speaking of your will, you’ll likely need to revise it too, along with other legal documents, such as a living trust. Consult with your legal professional to make these revisions.
It can feel like a long road to stability after a divorce – but by following the above suggestions, you may be able to make the trip a little less bumpy – and hopefully shorter – as well. While our beautiful North San Diego County is in a death struggle, our California Governor Newsome was hypocritically caught celebrating and breaking his own Covid-19 restrictions when he attended a large birthday celebration with dozens of friends and other "outside households" at a posh restaurant. And now he apologizes. But only after he got caught.
during these troublesome times is invaluable. No other paper compares to yours. You're the best and we salute you Mr. Lyle E. Davis, owner, publisher, and esteemed editor of this weekly magazine. And kudos to Mr. Tom Morrow, the Social Butterfly, and our precious Friedrich Gomez who is priceless to all us readers!) From Arlene Ann Tibbets & many friends, North San Diego County..
Our own San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer condemned Newsome for secretly living a lie, and celebrating a different life than the rest of us. In the Union-Tribune Faulconer said about Gov. Newsome: "His kids can learn in person. But yours can't. He can celebrate birthday parties. But you can't. He can dine on a $350 meal at one of California's fanciest restaurants during the worst recessions in generations. But you definitely can't. Can you believe this? I can't."
The next time Gov. Newsome states that it tortures him to have to further shutdown businesses but that we must commit to following the law, well perhaps he should just have another slice of birthday cake to ease his "pain" at his next secret gathering with outside household members not wearing facemasks.
Perhaps Newsome is related to Marie Antoinette who, when she was told that the peasants had no bread to eat, callously said: "Let them eat cake."

Where will the family gather for the exchanging of gifts, attending church, meeting new and/or evening. This year, it seems, an elusive virus is in charge of Christmas. In California the colors of Christmas will likely be red and purple instead of the traditional red and green. The most popular word this Christmas might be “Zoom.” Christmas is a big stressor in a good year. In a Covid year, it could be much greater. Here are some ways to reduce your stress at Christmas time.
Be Realistic. The sky high, unrealistic goals of other Christmases must be set aside. You can’t do all the things you would like to, so don’t sweat it. Just thinking about Mary and Joseph, pregnant out of wedlock at census time, traveling a longways and finding no place to stay makes your life seem simpler already, doesn’t it? Invest in someone else. Someone who cannot return your investment, who may otherwise be overlooked. The whole reason for Christmas is that God was investing others by sending his son into the world.
Focus on Jesus. We struggle to get into the spirit of Christmas. We blame it on the weather or the kids growing up, moving away or not coming home. This year, we blame it on the virus. Christmas still has a deep spiritual meaning. The Savior in the manger brings us into the Spirit of Christmas. Sing the carols. Read the stories. Reflect on the person of Jesus. Let the Spirit of Christmas get hold of your life. It will completely change you.

A Weekly Message from the Mayor of Your Community published in the belief that it is important for elected leaders to communicate with their constituents and that constituents have a means of hearing from their elected leaders.
San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones Grateful for San Marcos!
It’s no secret that the traditional Thanksgiving feast we all know might look different this year.
2020 has been a year of firsts. It was the first year in a new decade. It was the first time any of us experienced a global pandemic. It was the first time students across the nation switched to distance learning. There were many firsts, and as your mayor, my heart was there with the community as we faced a year of “firsts.”
Though so much has changed, I have learned in this year of firsts that tried and true things remain the same. Compassion, kindness and gratitude have always been essential. Showing love for our neighbors and families as we all go through this year is how we have all come this far. Although we have not been able to gather and support each other in person, we have transferred the love with family Zoom calls, virtual play dates and online conferences and events. I am eternally grateful for our community and wish you all a safe and happy holiday!
Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,
Thanksgiving has turned out to be my favorite holiday. Why? Because it is the least commercialized, but even that status is being assaulted. Be assured I am like everyone else; I like lights at Christmas time and the flag waving during the 4th of July and all the other decorations during the year. But I have to admit, I think folks are right when they say too much of the decorations and associated glitz takes away from the meaning of the holiday. In my mind, Thanksgiving has held the line. It remains a time for pause and reflection and most importantly gratitude. There is almost a somberness to it because it asks us to look both outward and inward and find those things, we are grateful for. When I think about it, I have a lot to be grateful for and those daily trials and tribulations seem to grow pale in comparison to the blessings we have in this community and country. So this is just a friendly reminder to remember to count your blessings and be grateful for them. Happy Thanksgiving! Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe! Semper Fi, Mac

campaign of picking up trash around Vista was started back in January 2017 by Sarah Spinks - and the November group showed enthusiasm and great success! After quiet summer months, over 50 participants with gloves and bags donned masks and kept social distance to clean up the town. The group received instructions from coordinator Alexis Panchevre, and then spread out from Frazier Farms in all directions, including Vista Village Creek. An amazing array of unsightly dumped detritus was gathered by the masked community crusaders: plastic and glass containers, cigarette butts, beer cartons, straws, takeout containers, and lots of paper. Thanks to Frazier Farms for allowing the Only Losers Litter group to fill their dumpster to overflowing. Thanks to Mrs. Cindy Brooks (CSF
advisor at Vista High School) and David Hanlon (Character Leaders advisor at Vista High) for promoting and sharing this opportunity for students to earn community service credit. Students and adults were happy to pitch in and make a difference.
A positive movement has come back to life in Vista - can you join us and take the responsibility to put litter in its place? The next Only Losers Litter trash cleanup will be on December 20 at 2:30pm, location TBA. Visit our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/onlyloserslitter

Celebra ting the Holiday s During the Pandem ic We’re are nearing the end of a year that none of us could have predicted in 2019. While it was a time of great uncertainty and anxiety for all of us, I want to take a moment to assure the community that the City of Vista and our community partners continue to work quickly and innovatively to meet each new challenge.
Creative thinking, meeting challenges head-on, and coming together as a community, have been benchmarks for Vista since our incorporation in 1963. The pandemic is testing us in ways never seen before; especially during this holiday season; however, I remain confident that Vista will weather whatever this virus sends our way. Please continue to be well, be safe, and wear your mask, wash your hands, and keep up the physical distancing! My best wishes to you and your loved ones for a safe and happy holiday.

Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving will be a little weird this year. We’ve always had a full dance card for Thanksgiving weekend. Usually there was the multi-church sponsored community Thanksgiving dinner at the San Marcos senior center which we supported and attended over the years. Always there was a family get together at some ones home during Thanksgiving weekend. This year there are no community events, no multi-household holiday gatherings and we have to be home be ten PM. It’s the law but its sure a drag. Thanksgiving is the time when

Nome and I feel especially blessed. We’re more than a decade beyond the “mandatory retirement age” and still we get to go to work six days a week. Our good health has allowed us to live pretty much without compromise, we have fifty-five years plus of sharing our lives together and we’re still BFF. We have challenging, interesting work and we get to enjoy old friends and neighbors and meet new ones all day, every day.
but as being a part of growing up in America, it’s mostly a relic of bygone days. The craving for connectedness is still strong and younger generations satisfy that need through narrower affiliations like school, politics, church, and other social and civic organizations. We all need to be an integral part of something that’s bigger than us, and we find ways to meet that need in different ways. Older generations may lament the lack of community connectedness in younger generations but it’s still there, it’s simply taken a different form. So if you’re old school, like us, quit worrying about the kids, different times create different and
perhaps incomprehensible (to us) answers to human needs. Just “stay in your lane” and “hang on to what you got.”
So to all the friends in our “community” we say, don’t stop doing what you’re doing. We need each other to stay connected. Keep that fudge coming Jackie and the Brownies Little Carolyn. Keep baking Mr. Cookie man and we love your pies Brad. By next week we should be able to start bringing our Meyers lemons to work.
Our friends who share the fruits from their trees, veggies from their gardens, and goodies from the kitchen know that they’re sharing far more than the food they bring.
As humans, the craving for “connectedness” as in our DNA. For those like us who grew up in 20th century small town America, our “connectedness” was satisfied through a sense of belonging to the community or neighborhood. In small town America everyone was connected in some way, and we instinctively liked, trusted and cared about one another. Your home town or neighborhood was like family and it’s human nature to love the things you know.
21st century America is more urban and less locally connected. The feeling of “community” still exists in some ethnic and rural area

Outreach Homeless New Initiative - 'The San Diego Rescue Mission has received a $100,000 grant from the Lucky Duck Foundation to launch a new countywide outreach initiative. The new program, called Walk With Me, aims to lovingly engage and encourage our neighbors without homes through the power of friendship. Walk With Me will be a collective partnership with local churches, service organizations and volunteers who will develop a unique one-on-one relationship with an individual who is experiencing homelessness and living on the streets. The mission is to transform the lives of people experiencing homelessness by equipping and supporting volunteers to walk alongside them as a friend for an extended period of time where trust is built, connections to resources are

made, and the two move forward together.
"Our hope is that all of our vulnerable friends experiencing homelessness can feel valued, loved, and seen just as God sees them," said Donnie Dee, CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission. "We are inviting the community to join our faithbased initiative to use the power of relationships to help those most in need."
All outreach volunteers will be fully equipped with 8-10 hours of comprehensive training before starting the "Journey of Relationship" with a new friend. Commitment is five to seven hours a month and a minimum of one year. The Rescue Mission will refer to the men and women experiencing homelessness as "neighbors" and individual volunteers who pair up with them as "friends." "We are pleased to fund the launch of this special and important initiative that will help those in need make progress towards a safer and more fulfilling life off the dangerous streets," said Drew Moser, Executive Director of the Lucky Duck Foundation. "And we applaud Mary Benirschke, San Diego Rescue Mission Board Member and Founder of the program, for her vision and efforts to bring this program to life." The petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court.
