to many people today, this first statement happens to be true. The so-called “Thanksgiving Day” celebration by the early Pilgrims back in 1621 was actually called a “Harvest Festival” or a “Harvest Feast” to celebrate the first successful crop harvest in the New World. However, since Pilgrim members were deeply religious and motivated by religious beliefs and deep faith in God, they used this first Harvest Feast in giving thanks and prayers for blessings bestowed upon them by a gracious God.

Today we celebrate Thanksgiving Day as both a religious and secular holiday. (Note: Thanksgiving services and feasts were routine in what became the Commonwealth of Virginia as early as 1607 with the first permanent settlement at Jamestown, Virginia, holding a thanksgiving celebration in 1610. Nevertheless, the Pilgrim’s first thanksgiving celebration of 1621 is traditionally the one which most Americans identify with, in their annual observance of the holiday.
