Today more people believe in reincarnation than at any other time in human history; and not just because there are more people populating our planet but in ratio to population from ancient times to now: there are still more humans, by far, subscribing to the notion of the afterlife known as reincarnation.

The worldwide belief in reincarnation is growing at a startling rate, especially in Europe, Canada, the United States, and Down Under The Paper - 760.747.7119

What was once an arcane belief system rooted mostly in ancient religions such as found in the tenets of Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, belief in reincarnation has now permeated modern western cultures, regions, and mainstream religions that were once thought to be impenetrable from the reincarnation mindset. And not just as a casual interest or curiosity, but rather, reincarnation has firmly established itself as an immovable belief system among the planet’s

inhabitants as never before.

WHAT EXACTLY IS REINCARNATION?

Reincarnation is the philosophical or religious belief that the nonphysical essence of a living human being (the soul or spirit), begins a new life in a different physical form or body after biological death. It is also referred to as rebirth or transmigration. The genesis or origin of the notion of reincarnation is so old as to be obscure, predating even the historical Buddha (Siddhartha) as

well as all the ancient religions of the world. Antiquity scholars believe the concept of reincarnation goes as far back as the dawn of human existence itself. Ever since early humankind was able to think, cogitate, and look up at the stars. Countless millennia later, with the advent of writing, many wrote of it. And even thousands of years after writing was first created, many sources continued mentioning it, such as with the ancient Greek philosopher, Plato (427 B.C. - 347 B.C) who wrote of reincarnation as such: “I am confident that there

truly is such a thing as living again, and that the living spring from the dead.” (Myth of Er in Phaedo.) WHY IS THE CONCEPT OF REINCARNATION GROWING?

Since time immemorial, the afterlife has been a natural, human fascination and intrigue. All cultures have wondered what happens when we die. Stories of reincarnation often give believers hope that their consciousness continues after death. It is a natural human predilection to entertain and reflect on such thoughts. RISING BELIEF IN REINCARNATION AMONG CHRISTIANS MYSTIFIES & UNSETTLES MANY PASTORS & MINISTERS.

Often, to the great chagrin and befuddlement of countless Christian pastors, ministers, and various religious clerics, growing numbers within their own congregations have openly – and privately – embraced the concept of reincarnation. That when they physically die, their soul will reappear in another human body, to continue the earthly cycle of life-and-death. Proponents believe this life and death cycle continues for a duration and continuum of time which remains unknown. Many U. S. church leaders say such

beliefs run contrary to mainstream Christian doctrine. while others have deviating opinions. The trending of devout Christian followers now adhering to a reincarnation doctrine is nothing new – it has been going on for years.

According to data released by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life back in 2009, 24% of American Christians expressed a belief in reincarnation. This represents a significant deviation from the traditional Judaeo-Christian narrative with which most Americans are taught from their own bible: You are born. You live. You die. And after a judgment you go to Heaven or Hell forever. For some pastors, it’s discomforting, because it is formally written in their holy book: “It is appointed for every mortal to die but once, and after that the judgment.” (Epistle to the Hebrews in the New Testament, Hebrews 9:27)

And yet, there are biblical exceptions to that scriptural rule, such as with Enoch and Elijah, which the Good Book says were taken up to Heaven while still being alive on Earth, and not experiencing an earthly death. Also Lazarus, who was raised from the dead, as well as Jairus’ daughter, and others who were “risen from the dead,” according to biblical scripture.

Christian orthodoxy. The dizzying acceleration of the belief in reincarnation has been expanding by leaps and bounds, not just among Christians here in the United States, but, among all Christians, worldwide.

In repeated polls, around the world, by both Christian and secular sources, Christians are harboring (open and private) beliefs in reincarnation in record numbers. Despite what their pastors, ministers, and Christian leaders say is written to the contrary, in their Old and New Testament bibles.

SHOCKINGLY, 51% OF ALL PEOPLE SURVEYED (RELIGIOUS & NON-RELIGIOUS COMBINED) NOW BELIEVE IN REINCARNATION. In one international survey, over 18,000 people (secular and religious combined) in 23 different countries participated in a poll by the Global Research Society and also the Social Research data bank, and found that 51% of people throughout the world believe in reincarnation! These global surveys were replicated (repeated) by both secular and religious entities to account for statistical error. The research approximations were consistent. Mr. Robert Duffy, managing director of Social Research, told Reuters News Organization (which feeds international news around the globe to world newspapers), of another shocker: “It may only seem to many

that we live in a secular world, but this global study shows that spiritual life is important to the citizens of the world, since half of them said they believe in a supreme being.” So much for the anachronistic view that reincarnation is only for pagans. INCREDIBLY, ONE-THIRD OF THE WORLD’S CHRISTIAN POPULATION NOW SUBSCRIBES TO REINCARNATION!

Today, Christianity is – and has been, by far -- the largest religion in the world, with an astounding number of Christian faithful numbering over 2 ½ billion people on a planet of 7.8 billion human inhabitants. That translates to about 1/3 of all living beings in the world who are of the Christian faith. Of that 2 ½ billion Christians, it is now estimated that approximately 31% (or close to 1/3) of the world’s Christians adhere to a belief in reincarnation! What clearly used to be a belief system germane to such ancient religions as Hinduism and Buddhism, is no longer the case. And it is not just the young Christians; the belief in reincarnation has permeated mid and upper age demographics as well. IN AMERICA, MORE CHRISTIANS THAN ATHEISTS & AGNOSTICS COMBINED, BELIEVE IN REINCARNATION!

The fact that it has survived for 138 years fairly intact has encouraged some local officials to look at a future restoration. Within just the United States alone, more American Christians than atheists and agnostics (combined), believe in reincarnation! A staggering and most unexpected revelation! Replicated surveys and polls (from both secular and religious entities) across the United States reveal than an estimated 1/3 (or 33%) of American Christians subscribe to a belief in reincarnation, despite religious doctrine that disavows such a belief system. Interestingly, only 18% of agnostics believe in reincarnation. And only 11.5% of atheists say they believe in reincarnation.

FEAR KEEPS MANY CHRISTIANS FROM TALKING ABOUT THEIR BELIEF IN REINCARNATION. With false confidence, many pastors may smile and shrug their shoulders and confidently assert: “Well, I personally know my congregation, and we’re not believers in reincarnation.”

Statistically, this may be a flagrantly wrong assumption. Many Christians keep their reincarnation beliefs private, with surveys and polls affording them comfort and anonymity to freely and openly discuss their deep convictions and immovable belief in reincarnation. Christian polls, with the caveat of

Judge Allen had the title of Justice of the Peace, a term used today for someone who performs a wedding ceremony. But during Allen's tenure, justices presided over many legal proceedings including small claims issues, misdemeanors, petty criminal infractions, and weddings. They were elected or chosen by citizens of the jurisdiction. Allen's service in the Bear Valley court appears to have ended with his death in 1922 at age 71, after which he was buried in Valley Center Cemetery. The full history of the courthouse remains under study, but here is what is known: after Allen's death, the building served as a blacksmith shop; in the 1930s, entertainment lawyer Martin Gang purchased the building and surrounding property as part of a successful farm; after the 1933 earthquake, Gang repaired damage to the courthouse and slightly modified the configuration; in 1974, the Gang property, including the courthouse, was acquired by the local school district; in the 1980s, a middle school agriculture teacher lived in the adobe; and, until several years ago, it was home to a

people surveyed remaining anonymous, also reveal that Christians are well aware of the reality of “church gossip” and, therefore, withhold such reincarnation beliefs -- even from the reassurances of their religious leaders and fellow parishioners that they will not be adversely judged.

Since orthodox Christianity already teaches the worldwide doctrine of eternal life in Heaven for its faithful after physical death on earth, it remains mystifying to many pastors and ministers as to why members of their flock choose to (overtly and covertly) subscribe to reincarnation on earth, as well as the scriptural belief in Heaven after death.

Having aspirations to be a minister or preacher in his early life, the brilliant research scientist of whom Sigmund Freud admired, Carl Gustav Jung stated: “I could well imagine that I might have lived in former centuries and there encountered questions I was not yet able to answer, and that I had to be born again because I had not fulfilled the task that was given to me.”

MAHATMA GANDHI (18691948). The Great One said: “I cannot think of permanent enmity between man and man, believing as I do in the theory of rebirth. I shall live in the hope that if not in this birth, in some other birth I shall be able to hug all humanity in friendly embrace.”

Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher testified to his reincarnation belief: “It is no more surprising to be born once than to be born twice: everything in nature is resurrection.”

GENERAL GEORGE S. PATTON (1885-1945). One of America’s most brilliant generals and military geniuses claimed to have had many past lives as an ancient Roman gladiator. He felt it strong and palpable in his mind, soul, and body. Of this he was most certain. He often wrote and said of reincarnation in a famous personal refrain: “So as through a glass and darkly, the age long strife I see, Where I fought in many guises, many names, but always me.” GEORGE HARRISON (19432001). The famous member of The Beatles witnessed on reincarnation: “Friends are all souls that we’ve known in other lives. We’re drawn to each other. Even if I have only known them a day, it doesn’t matter. I’m not going to wait till I have known them for two years, because anyway, we must have met somewhere before, you know.”

WILLIAM WORDSWORTH (1770-1850). One of England’s premiere poets and firm believer in reincarnation stated: “Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting; The Soul that rises with us, our life’s Star, Hath had elsewhere its setting. And cometh from afar.” KAHLIL GIBRAN (1883-1931). Immortal Lebanese poet, artist, and writer, speaking of reincarnation and returning back in a different earthly body: “Know, therefore, that from the greater silence I shall return . . . . Forget not that I shall come back to you . . . a little while, a moment of rest upon the wind, and another woman shall give birth to me.”

ROBERT BROWNING (18121889). The mighty English poet and playwright, a long believer in reincarnation, gave voice to his belief when he penned: “At times I almost dream I too have spent a life the sages way, And tread once more familiar paths. Perchance I perished in an arrogant self-reliance an age ago; and in that act, a prayer for one more chance went up and so earnest, so Instinct with better light let in by Death, That life was blotted out – not so completely But Scattered wrecks enough of it remain, Dim memories; as now, when seems once more, The goal in sight again.” ARTHUR SCHOPENHAUER (1788-1860). Great German philosopher gave life to his reincarnation beliefs: “Every new born indeed comes fresh and blithe into the new existence, and enjoys it as a free gift: but there is, and can be, nothing freely given. Its fresh existence is paid for by the old age and death of a worn out existence which has perished, but which contained the indestructible seed out of which

Page 5 • • December 3, 2020

the new existence has arisen: they are one being.”

FRIEDRICH NIETZCHE (18441900). The immortal German philosopher and poet majestically sums up his reincarnation belief in brief but profound words and the need to live a good, humanitarian existence: “Live so that thou mayest desire to live again – that is thy duty – for in any case thou wilt live again!” A MOST UNBELIEVABLE TRUE STORY -- A MICROCOSM OF WHAT REINCARNATION CAN BE LIKE.

If you were to ask popular American film star, comedian, writer, movie director and film producer, Billy Crystal, about reincarnation, don’t be surprised if he responds with laughter. For the 72year-old Hollywood megastar who has hosted the Academy Awards nine times, and has his own personal star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Crystal – ever the comedian - may well think that reincarnation is the perfect butt for jokes. The Jewish-American comic who attended the Jewish Temple-El in New York, where he was Bar Mitzvahed, had never seriously considered reincarnation, perhaps relegating it to fanciful flights of imagination, a natural propensity springing forth from his orthodox Hebrew upbringing. After all, in a manner of speaking, “reincarnation” would not be considered “kosher.”

And yet something mysterious and traumatic happened to Billy Crystal, born William Edward Crystal; something odd and indescribable happened to him back in 1990 while preparing for his iconic, hit comedy movie “City Slickers.”

The mysterious experience would prove to be life-changing for the Jewish comedian known to millions around the globe. What happened to him back in 1990 was something he now confesses that he now . . . well, that he now rarely talks about. The frightening experience made him a believer in reincarnation today. What you are about to read is vastly unknown and may be shocking in its revelation.

THE HAUNTING MOMENT THAT CHANGED BILLY CRYSTAL’S LIFE & MADE HIM A BELIEVER IN REINCARNATION. In preparation for his comedy Western-genre movie about cattle-driving called “City Slickers,” Billy Crystal and his wife, Janice, were en route to what would be the movie location where the film was to be shot. Little did Billy Crystal and his wife know what was about to happen to them during that life-changing moment in their car. It was, initially, a most terrifying event that would forever scar their psyche. And forever change their lives, to this very day. As Crystal recalls in his own words: “When I first

moved to California, my wife and me were driving around the Joshua Tree National Park, which is a spectacular park which really speaks of the Old West, and I pulled over because I was having an anxiety attack! And she said ‘What’s the matter?!’”

The panic attack terrified both of them. After it subsided, Billy Crystal was able to compose himself and answer his wife. He recalls what he told her: “And I said, this is really weird. This is a really strong feeling of Déjà vu! I feel I’ve been here before when I was a cowboy!” Billy Crystal pauses and then emphasizes, “This is no B.S. This is totally true.”

Crystal’s words momentarily froze as they both sat in their car that day. His anxiety attack had lasted almost 10 minutes and the residual effects still lingered. Anxiety attacks normally manifest a shortness of breath, profuse sweating, trembling, and a feeling of being detached from the physical world which can cause serious heart palpitations. A most frightening experience that often leaves the victim with numbness, tingling sensations in the limbs and entire body! As well as a sudden overwhelming fear of dying! Billy Crystal reflects on that moment: “For two or three days I felt this out-of-body feeling that this was all too-familiar. There’s something that . . . I was here before as a cowboy. That was 1990 and we’re making the movie and I’m supposed to be learning to ride (as a city slicker in the movie). Our technical advisor, great, great rider, was Jerry Gatling, who was John Wayne’s stuntman; so I’m riding, roping steers, and I took to this very quickly and he said to me, ‘You must’ve been a cowboy in your past life.’ And I said, Whoa, wait a minute! Then I remembered what happened to me back at Joshua Tree National Park!” That Billy Crystal was able to impress an expert horseman and professional Western stunt double for John Wayne reveals Crystal’s quickness, and high-level skill, both on-and-off a horse that he had never ridden before! This presented a problem for the movie director. Because Billy Crystal and all his co-stars were supposed to be awkward, clumsy city slickers that were unable to rope, ride, etc. on this Dude Ranch. They were all, genuinely, bad at being part of a cattle drive – except for Billy Crystal!

Film director, Ron Underwood, remembers: “Billy was an immediate natural on a horse. He was a great rider on a horse. It was kinda spooky. The rest of his co-stars were really, totally uncomfortable on a horse from day one. They were the last people to be going on a cattle drive.” Solution: Billy Crystal had to pretend to be a bad rider! Otherwise, he was a highly skilled cowboy – which was contrary to the movie

script of him (and everyone else) to be city slickers.

Turns out that Billy Crystal’s panic attack was not only real, but, his cowboy skills of roping, riding, branding, and herding cattle were without rational explanation, even impressing John Wayne’s stuntman and a highly-professional cowboy who is, well, not easily impressed! Especially from a Jewish boy who grew up in the Bronx and Long Island, in New York. And was riding a horse for the very first time! It all just didn’t make sense. And yet his skill level was comparable to the film’s technical advisor, stunt double, and bona-fide cowboy! Today, Billy Crystal enjoys horseback riding. As he says, “Few things I love to do besides performing and relaxing and that’s getting back on a horse, getting my heels down, kicking out there and riding!”

To this day, Billy Crystal is convinced he lived a prior life as a cowboy. And yet, he rarely speaks of that fateful moment today. After seeing him jumping on a horse, herding cattle, and roping steers – well, he has become a devout believer in reincarnation. It’s a deeply personal belief for him. That anxiety attack which imprinted upon his consciousness an array of visions and feelings of being a cowboy in another life is hard to dispute. Especially in this case, when actions speak louder than words. THE EARLY CHURCH DESTROYED ALL PRE-CHRISTIAN WRITINGS OF REINCARNATION.

It’s no secret to bible scholars that the early church fathers, in their zealous agendas and motives to promote Christianity, erased all preChristian writings that referenced reincarnation. In the early medieval period, the doctrines of pre-existence and reincarnation only existed as Jesus’ secret teachings. In 553 A.D. this information was declared heresy at the Second Council of Constantinople. The Roman Church decided to destroy all the teachings which talked about it (reincarnation). There is substantial historical evidence by biblical scholars that Origen, a Church father in early Christian times, taught reincarnation in his lifetime, but when his works were translated into Latin as a matter of record for future posterity to read, these reincarnation references were concealed. VARIOUS REASONS FOR EARLY CHURCH TO SUPPRESS REINCARNATION.

There were different examples and different reasons behind the erasing of anything that might prove offensive and/or inconvenient for early church fathers, such as reincarnation.

. Reincarnation Cont. on Page 6

The Paper

Reincarnation Cont. from Page 5

One example which several leading biblical scholars (who are Christians, themselves) point out is that: “The Catholic doctrine and the priests’ source of wealth could have been in danger if people believed that they would come back to life many times. The Old Knowledge faced the same fate as many ancient books by preChristian writers, which were all erased. The bishops were afraid of the Knowledge (reincarnation) which could prove that the institutions of the Church wasn’t the only option to bring ‘eternal life’ to people.”

Another aspect which made the early Church even more resistant in allowing the belief in reincarnation was related to the Crusades. During the Crusades, people were offering all they had to the Church and fought in the name of the biblical Jesus. The religious fighters may have thought twice about losing their lives for their religion if they had thought they would be reincarnated in the future. Instead of having eternal spiritual life in Heaven, they would just be reborn in physical form to just live out another life span (or life spans) on earth. As such, early Christian religion could not allow reincarnation as a belief system.

To exercise further control over people to avoid reincarnation, the church emphasized frightening fireand-brimstone sermons against parishioners who disobeyed; and that Hell is eternal damnation; eternal torture without end; which terrified their religious flocks. Although this served well to prevent reincarnation from flourishing among their congregants, it also created a backlash of thinking, even today among Christians: “How can an all-loving, benevolent, merciful, and forgiving God ever create such eternal suffering and torture in an endless Hell?”

The age-old answer from Church leaders: “Because He must also be a Just God,” still did not ‘sit right’ with those who found it difficult that not one, single soul could be pardoned from eternal Hell and damnation even if they had true contrition and repentance, in the same way that Moses was pardoned for committing murder, and even the bible’s central author, the Apostle Paul (Saint Paul aka Saul of Tarsus), who was forgiven for the countless Christians lives (both adults and children) that died as he orchestrated efforts to have them physically dragged out of their homes screaming for mercy as they faced unspeakable torture and death. If they be pardoned of sin, how then can a merciful and compassionate God create an eternity of suffering such as Hell? So wondered the people, to this very day.

Nevertheless, such early terrifying preaching of unforgiving torture and an endless Hell seemed to work

in stamping out any resurgence of belief in reincarnation. WAS THE BIBLICAL JESUS RESURRECTED OR REINCARNATED -- OR A FUSION OF BOTH?

It is interesting to many that when the Christian Jesus was “resurrected,” his followers did not recognize him. In fact, they adamantly doubted it was the same Jesus that was crucified; the same Jesus they lived, ate, preached, and slept with. Yet, they did not recognize him (Luke 24:36). Days later when the disciple Thomas saw Jesus, he also refused to believe he was the same person and wanted to touch his wounds as proof (John 20:26-29).

Such questioning often disturbs, even angers, some men of the cloth. Yet, parishioners feel it is their divine right to freely ask such questions instead of being preached at, and vilified that the devil is poisoning their minds. Some say Jesus’ resurrection was into a different body. Could this have been a form of reincarnation, since the scriptural Jesus was not recognized because he had a different body and form? Christian pastors and ministers are sometimes highly-charged and quick to dispute this possibility and, ostensibly, many scramble about for “religious damage control.” Answers clothed in phrases such as “He was not yet fully ascended,” or “He was in spirit form,” is no longer convincing since Jesus, himself, clearly stated he was neither ghost nor spirit to his disciples who saw him, but did not recognize him.

Whether this line of questioning is offensive or not, Christians say they should always feel free and comfortable in posing such queries. The threat of condemnation or ridicule, often serves why Christians today often keep their personal theological points of view private, for fear of possible church retribution. Or even ridiculed. Perhaps pilloried from a Sunday sermon as a “misguided” congregant. So say many Christians surveyed today. THE BIBLICAL JESUS OSTENSIBLY CLEARLY REMARKED ON REINCARNATION.

According to ancient Jewish Judaeo-religious belief, the Hebrew prophet, Elijah, must first return in physical form before the true Messiah appears on Earth (Book of Malachi 4:5). Since Elijah, long gone for over eight centuries, had not yet returned and Jesus was already viewed as the Messianic figure, the disciples asked him about this. Jesus replied that the spirit and soul of Elijah had, indeed, already returned in the body and form of John the Baptist, but the people did not recognize him. (Luke 1:17). If one is to accept what is found in Scripture, then one would have to accept what their own Christ Jesus said in his own Aramaic words on John the Baptist being the physical re-embodiment

Support Our Small Businesses

November 28 Is ‘Small Business Saturday,’ a day to patronize local small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy. Without them, our state and national economies will never recover.

My husband and I have owned our own small business for over 25 years, I know how hard it is to keep a business going in California. Costly, overbearing regulations, high taxes and fees, high rents, energy bills, all make doing business in this state a challenge. Now the pandemic has struck, with a disproportionate impact on small businesses throughout the state. Many have been forced to close or significantly curtail operations while their larger (essential) competitors often remain open. Many small businesses are just one more shut-down away from closing their doors permanently. We, their customers, should do all we can to make sure they remain open, for their sake and ours. Our local small businesses make up 95% of the businesses in this region. They employ our family, friends and neighbors. The continuously changing orders to open, close, partially open and close again are wreaking havoc. Many of our favorite restaurants, shops, stores and other businesses will never open their doors again. Small Business Saturday is an important reminder that small businesses are

part of the very fabric of this region. They employ thousands, and give back so much to our communities. So on Small Business Saturday, make a purchase from a local vendor, and continue to support them over the holidays and throughout the year. Without them, the current pandemic-induced recession may become permanent and develop into a depression – that must not happen! The Legislature goes back into session in January. I’ll be doing everything I can to ensure that California’s small businesses are allowed to operate safely and profitably -- just like their larger competitors. Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

Happy Thanksgiving

I don’t think there’s ever been a more important Thanksgiving than this year. Now more than ever is a time for reflection, for sitting down and thinking about all the things for which we are grateful.

I was grateful to sit down with my family this year, have a wonderful meal and just spend time with each other. It’s been a hectic year and we haven’t had enough opportunity to all sit down, talk about our lives and be together. I was grateful to talk to my extended family over Zoom, and hear about my brother’s fight against Pancreatic Cancer. I was grateful that even if we all couldn’t be together, we could see each other. No matter how or where you spent your Thanksgiving this year, continue to be grateful. Be grateful for whatever you want, for me, I’m grateful for my family’s health, safety and living in the greatest country in the world.

I’m grateful for my experience in the United States Navy and for all of our Veterans and especially the active members of our military deployed over the holidays.

I’m grateful for first responders and law enforcement personnel and their unwavering commitment to very difficult jobs. I’m grateful for my 34 years as a pilot, and for all of the great people I flew and worked with along the way. I’m grateful for the people of San Diego’s North County, and their resilience and willingness to care for one another. I’m grateful to live in a country where we can be independently minded, actively debate issues and respectfully express differences of opinion.

And I’m hopeful that those in need, those with any number of struggles, will find strength and support this holiday season. And, I’m grateful for my incredible wife and our family. For a great GIFT idea anytime of the year Give a gift subscription to The Paper!

of Elijah the prophet. Regarding John the Baptist being Elijah, Jesus clearly says in his Aramaic tongue: “This is of whom it is written . . . . For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John, and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.” (Matthew 11:11-15). Among the eminent scholars and experts of the bible, such as world-respected theologian, Dr. Andrew Swafford, professor of theology at Benedictine College at Atchison, Kansas, it appears very clear what Jesus of Nazareth proclaimed about John the Baptist: Elijah returned in the form of John the Baptist.

John the Baptist may not have been cognizant of who he was, reborn again as Elijah. That is common in the realm of reincarnation, so say the researchers. Again, this doesn’t ‘sit well’ with many from the pulpit. Already the steady refrain has been: “Oh, what Jesus meant was that John the Baptist was only guided by the spirit and purpose of Elijah. That John the Baptist only functioned like the prophet, Elijah. There was no reincarnation here. It’s a misunderstanding.” Once again, reincarnation has (no pun intended) returned to biblical scripture with renewed life, and vigor, and raging new debate. And once again, many clerics are scrambling to put man-made interpretations on it, as it applies to scripture and church dogma. In the meantime, as I take my evening walks, I prefer to heed the words, directly and unfiltered, from this Man of Galilee. Whether one is Christian or non-Christian, he seems to encourage us to simply accept his very own words: “. . . and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.” Is the belief in reincarnation good? Or is it bad?

It all depends on who you are talking to.

A Colorful, Behind the Scenes Politician

Robert S. Strauss was a figure in American politics and diplomacy whose service dated back to years before Lyndon Baines Johnson became president. He worked on LBJ’s first congressional campaign in 1937. By the 1950s, he was associated in Texas politics with the faction of the Democratic Party led by U.S. Senator Johnson and Texas Gov. John Connally. He served as the Chairman of the Democratic National Committee between 1972 and 1977 and served under President Jimmy Carter as the U.S. Trade Representative and special envoy to the Middle East.

But he wisely worked b o t h sides of the aisle and was witness o t dynamic h i s t o r y. Strauss w a s selected by President George H. W. Bush to be the U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union in 1991 and after the Soviet Union collapsed, he continued serving as ambassador to the Russian Empire from 1991 to 1992.

His law firm, Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, grew to be one of the largest in the world with offices in 15 cities and employing more than 900 lawyers and professionals worldwide. Strauss was recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest U.S. civilian award.

Strauss had occupied academic chairs and lecture positions, including one as the Lloyd Bentsen Chair at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas in Austin. He also had an interest in biomedical issues and had endowed two chairs at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas: the Helen and Robert S. Strauss Professorship in Pediatric Neurology and the Helen and Robert S. Strauss Professorship in Urology. Late in life, Strauss served as president of the Del Mar Turf Club in North San Diego County.

One of his last public appearances was on Johnny Carson’s ”Tonight” show in the late ‘90s. During his interview with Carson, Strauss recalled in 1948, when he was working to get LBJ elected representative early in the future president’s career.

“It was late at night. We were working this cemetery. All of us were copying down names. I had this one tombstone that had a thick layer of moss covering the name. After a short while trying to

In a way I’m here because of Ronald Reagan. Let me explain

Growing up in Iowa famous people were only known to us as images appearing in magazines, newspapers and film. So every time Reagan popped up in a movie or occasionally on television, our Mom would make some sort of comment about knowing the movie star when he was a sports announcer at WHO radio in Des Moines, the Iowa capital. Reagan was known to radio listeners as “Dutch”Reagan. My sister and I would role our eyes with a wink and a nod. She was not deterred. So,when got s little older, we asked Mom “how”she knew “The Gipper,” a moniker Reagan picked up from his movie role in “The Knute Rockne Story” when he portrayed football star George Gipp. Mom said she knew him in the mid-thirties during the Great Depression.

“I was slinging hash at a coffee shop across the street from the radio station. Dutch came in every morning for breakfast, she’d explain. “I usually took his order.” When there was a slow time Reagan would talk to Mom about what her aspersions were. At that time she was in her mid-twenties. Mom was saving to go to cosmetology school, but with money being tight, she had almost given up. Dutch would keep encouraging her to follow through with her dream.

She did and after graduation she was hired by a small Beauty shop in southern Iowa. Had she not followed Reagan’s advice and not taken that job in Seymour, Ia, she would never have met our Dad.

Jump ahead to 1974. Gov. Reagan was making a political speech in Phoenix where I was a newspaper editor. As luck would have it, his wife came and sat down beside me. With tonguecheek I passed my business card to Nancy asking her if Dutch would remember Mom?

“Oh yes,” she assured. “He never forgets people he meets.” Two weeks later I got a letter from the California Governor’s office. “I remember your mother very well,” he wrote. “Tell her I’m going back to Des Moines this weekend to celebrate WHO’s 50th anniversary.” When I showed Mom the letter, her only remark was: “… told you so.”

"make time" -- put time aside - to read it?

If The Paper would only make a difference in just one human being -- wouldn't that be worth it? In times of financial crisis, political division, near economic collapse, and higher rates of suicide -- yes, it would be worth it. Even a small beggar's portion of bringing two people together, even in the smallest way -- it would be worth it.

Well, it happened.

Today, as I went to The San Diego County Credit Union, located on 150 East Valley Parkway, here in Escondido, I stood in line waiting to do my banking. A lady standing in front of me turned around and said she was a big fan of The Paper and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. That's always nice to hear -- but then, something totally unexpected happened.

The head manager of the SDCCU (named Rose) walked over to me and stood, smiling at me, just waiting for a

Managing Your Retirement Plan Under a New Employer

Your employer-sponsored retirement plan is a valuable asset. But sometimes things happen that can affect the status of your plan. So, for example, if you work for a hospital that changes ownership, and you have been participating in a 403(b), 457(b) or 401(k) retirement plan, what should you do with it now? Basically, you have four options:

Cash out your plan. You can simply cash out your plan and take the money, but you’ll have to pay taxes on it, and possibly penalties as well. So, unless you really need the funds and you have no other alternative, you may want to avoid liquidating your account. Roll your account into your new employer’s plan. If it’s allowed, you can roll over your old 403(b), 457(b) or 401(k) plan

moment to speak with me. What she related to me made me speechless. Moved me close to tears. The SDCCU opens at 10 a.m. to serve the public. But before they open, all the personnel in all departments meet in a huge roundtable discussion to talk about business; what to expect on a particular day; financial protocol, and so on. It is also a serious conference for all employees to give input to higher management. Well, before they opened this morning (Wed. 11/25/20), guess what they did?

Instead of adhering to the strictures and orientation of the financial world, they decided to do something special, before opening their doors. Something different . . . together. And since they are all off on the following day (Thanksgiving), they all used this special, American celebration day of giving thanks by coming closer as a workforce. So, they all took out a copy of Lyle E. Davis' The Paper and played the Thanksgiving Day Letters to the Editor Cont. on Page 10

into your new employer’s plan. Before making this move, you’ll want to look at the new plan’s investment options (which should be numerous) and fees (which should be low). If you move the money directly to the new plan, you won’t be taxed at the time of the transfer, and your funds can continue to grow taxdeferred.

Leave your plan with your old employer. If your account balance is above a certain level, you may be able to leave your plan with your old employer’s plan administrator. You won’t be able to contribute any more money to the plan, but if you like the investment options you’ve chosen, keeping the money in your old plan might be a viable choice.

Move your account into a traditional IRA. One possible advantage to moving your 403(b), 457(b) or 401(k) into a traditional IRA is you’ll open up a world of new investment options, because you can fund your IRA with virtually any type of vehicle, including stocks, bonds, mutual funds, certificates of deposit (CDs) and exchangetraded funds. And if you already have a traditional IRA, you can combine the new funds with the old ones, making it easier to track your holdings. As is the

Millions of dollars and thousands of man hours have been spent in this search. There is unbelievable excitement if there is found ice or water on the moon or a distant planet. But both of these, and even possible microbes, are a far cry for developed life, such as there is here on earth – our home. Some scientists and astronomers, while excited at the possibility of similar star/planet relationships such as exists in our case of sun/earth, have suggested that our earth is conceivably the only habitable cosmic body in the entire universe. Wouldn’t that be something? Maybe we are it!

Yet, there is Christmas, a time of the

year, which gives us cause for reflection of alien life beyond this earth. We hear of angels coming to earth singing songs, messengers of divine origin, bringing messages from a place called heaven, telling human beings that the God of this universe wants to communicate with us through a super spiritual/human being just to let us know there is a promising perfect future for this diseased, fractured, selfish, and often very evil world, which is under the influence of other alien beings called Satan and his demons. These stories, recorded in the Bible, and other pieces of literature would suggest we here on earth are not alone in this universe, but under the influence of beings far superior to us, both for good and evil. In all our search for life beyond us in the universe, perhaps we have it right here in a spiritual dimension, waiting for us to simply seek eyes to see it. The old hymn has a refrain worth repeating, “Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth You (GOD) have for me.” Merry Christmas. Pastor Huls

Available office space to lease at City Hall

I invite you to come work in the same place where city magic is created! If you are looking for office space in the fastest growing community in the region, I suggest you explore the San Marcos Civic Center.

It is located at 1 Civic Center Drive in the SR-78 Corridor. San Marcos Civic Center is an award-winning professional building in the heart of the city. The list of amenities that City Hall has to offer is long. It is within walking distance of great restaurants and retail, it is close to transit options and connections (including the San Marcos Sprinter Station) and it is located just minutes away from Cal State San Marcos and Palomar College. City Hall also offers a complimentary wellness center, access to the city’s extensive trail system, conference/meeting rooms for discounted rates and onsite property management. Ready to join us? Contact Cecilia Griffith at cgriffith@idsrealestate.com or call (442) 515-3175.

Holiday Celebra tions The City of Vista is launching a new, holiday celebration called Jingle Terrace Park.

This free, drive-through event will feature holidaythemed light displays stretching along the driving loop in Brengle Terrace Park. Jingle Terrace Park runs December 5 through December 28 and will be open nightly.

We think visitors will be captivated by the displays of holiday lights depicting many of Vista’s special and unique amenities. December is typically a time to gather, reflect, and celebrate, and although we are unable to do so in traditional ways this year, we are excited to fill that need in a safe and special way. We hope it will become an annual tradition for years to come! Learn more online at CityofVista.com.

Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss

The City is accepting nominations for the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Service Award.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara

This annual award recognizes residents of the City of Oceanside or member of the U.S. Armed Forces stationed at Camp Pendleton, who have made a significant contribution of time and energy to improve community life, promote positive community development, and enhance the lives of individuals and neighborhoods in the City.

Greetings Escondido,

One of the things that has impressed me the most about the COVID 19 crisis is the innovation so many people have demonstrated. Sometimes, I feel like I am in a disaster type movie watching people adapt to one challenge after another. This may sound corny, but it really makes me proud and grateful to live in such a community where folks just won’t quit.

During times like these we often hear the phrase silver lining. Well, the California Center for the Arts Escondido (CCAE) is giving us a silver lining. They partnered with a local family who have an excess of holiday lights and they are decorating Grape Day park with them. It is called Northern Lights and is scheduled to open on the 30th of November and last through the 3rd of January. It is free and COVID compliant. A lot of the lights are already hung and turned on in the evening. It is really worth a trip to see them. What a great way to wrap up the year! Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe!

The award is named in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in recognition of his contributions to civil rights, equal education, labor and voter rights, and to promote positive relationships between people, groups, and cultures. The award has no restrictions as to race, ethnicity, gender, or type of service and is open to any resident of Oceanside or Camp Pendleton. The nomination forms are found on the City website. The deadline to return nomination forms is December 7, 2020.

To Lyle E. Davis, Owner/Publisher of The Paper.

The story on White Eagle (Frederick Gomez) was truly inspiring and brought tears to our eyes. That your newspaper gave him the will to live when he was dying in the hospital from an accident is a miracle. I took SDSU classes on Kumeyaay Indians and they're very playful and childlike exactly like White Eagle! His cover stories in The Paper are brilliant & scholarly, but he's like a little boy when you meet & talk to him. Kumeyaay live two lives, one for their soul & one to assist other souls. He

worked with Richard Vasquez to feed the homeless for Calvary Chapel's "Food Ministry Outreach Program."

We first met him when he worked at San Marcos Walmart a few years back, after he recovered from his accident. With his Native American long hair, he is often mistaken for a girl and we often heard him tell Walmart customers "I'm a boy, not a girl." It doesn't bother him & he once told us he even thinks it's funny!

Kumeyaay think differently. Though his Christian name is Friedrich or Frederick (Walmart officially has him listed as "Friedrich" on his ID badge), he always answers to his tribal name: White Eagle.

Covid19 pandemic and the world stood still. Nearly all commercial and entertainment sites shelved plans to deny access to Win7 users because of security concerns. Since there was no longer a strong incentive to upgrade to Win10 from Win7, Win7 users simply kept on using Win7 upgrading only when their PC needed some other major service or repair.

December 2020 update.

2020 is nearly over but it has provided some interesting twists and turns for the Windows PC world. As 2019 came to a close there was a big rush to upgrade to Windows 10 before the January 14, 2020 official “Windows 7 end of support” date. Windows 7’s market share dropped from 30% in November 2019 to 25% by the end of January 2020 and Windows 10 increased its share of the Windows PC market from 65% to 70% in the same period. In early 2020 there were dire predictions that Windows 7 users would soon be shut out of commercial and social media access. Then came the

As 2020 comes to a close over 20% or about 250 million of the world’s PCs are still running Windows7. As the Covid pandemic eases, the Internet community will resume the planned shutdown of Windows7 and there is a concern that at some point Microsoft will end its present policy of allowing free upgrades for Windows 7 and 8 users. When that happens, the cost of a Win10 upgrade will go from today’s price of $120 to nearly $300. The other major upgrade opportunity that’s become very popular this year is the SSD upgrade. Only two short years ago the average price for a good quality SSD (like Western Digital or Samsung) was 30 to 50 cents per GB. Today’s price is half that amount. The Samsung 500GB SSD that sold for nearly $200 at the beginning of 2019 today sells for less than $100. SSDs (solid state drives) are faster because they don’t need to retrieve data from a spinning disc. The fact that that they have no moving parts

also makes them far more reliable than HDDs.

For older PCs, even those that have been upgraded to Windows 10, replacing the older HDD with a new SSD can make a huge difference in performance. Nearly all PCs built with Win7 (since 2010) are fast enough to max the Internet speed, so it’s a good idea to replace older HDDs with new SSD for speed and security purposes. If you’re like most home and business users these days, your local (on board) data and program storage needs are a fraction of what they were ten years ago. Business users typically rely on external storage for security purposes and

home and school users store very little on their local PC storage devices. They rely on banks, brokers, schools, E-Mail service providers and other Internet based services for holding user files. Internet based streaming audio and video has eliminated the need to store entertainment files locally. For most users a 250GB SSD, priced at $60 is, sufficient to meet all on-board program and data storage requirements. So if you’re wondering whether you need to replace your old desktop or notebook PC, bring it in before you finalize your decision. We’ll give you the information you need to make the optimal decision. Spending less to get what you need is always a good thing.

Coincidentally, just a couple days later, another single kitten arrived at our shelter. Ruth joined AJ in her foster home, and the two provided each other with critical comfort and socialization. When they’d both grown strong enough, they were spayed and adopted into new homes!

AJ and Ruth are safe this holiday season — but thousands of animals still need us. Your donation today will DOUBLE to give them each the shelter, medical care and second chance they deserve.

Will you continue to help homeless and abused animals by giving generously to our 2020 Holiday Drive to Save Lives? Thanks to a generous match from our friends at the Resource Partners Foundation, your gift by Dec. 31 will be doubled — up to $100,000! This holiday season, consider a gift that will make twice the wishes come true. Thank you!
