mindset, topsy-turvy priorities, and questionable cultural values inspire Jay Leno, former host of “The Tonight Show,” to joke: “A new candidate for California governor is running on a platform of taxing breast implants, which of course are California’s largest natural resources.”

In actual truth, California spends more money on breast augmentation than any other state, with San Diego County among the top three in

California. With Americans spending more than $16.5 billion on breast implants just last year (2018), Jay Leno’s comical notion of taxing such a procedure could, in reality, create a substantial “war chest” (pun intended) in revenue.

Only in California can such bizarre comedic material from standup comics, actually blur the line between humor and fact in our Golden State.

What this essentially means, for many people, is that you can be told to “Go to hell” in 220 different ways . . . and not even know it.

In essence, California is more than just a state; it’s a “state of mind.”

True natives of California know how to laugh at ourselves, without being destructive. We are among the most resilient and sturdy of people, and wise enough to know that “humor truly is the best medicine.” And that a life devoid of humor is a life being measured and fitted for a strait-jacket.

I’m a California boy, born and bred, and I learned early-on, even as a 7-year-old kid, that our California culture was shockingly different from any other U. S. state. Far, far more different than, say, Nebraska from New York, or Oregon from Louisiana, Boston from Texas.

For example, where else can you brag that “The Terminator” (actor Arnold Schwartzenegger) was actually your state governor? And also, fellow movie star, Ronald Reagan? Some voters actually wrote in Jack Benny’s name

The English Plural

We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes, But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes.

One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, Yet the plural of moose should never be meese.

If the plural of man is always called men, Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?

It seems as though everyone has something to say about us California natives and our great Golden State.

Even America’s great, but eccentric, legendary author, Truman Capote (1924-1984), author of “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “In Cold Blood” (both novels were made into celebrated films) had this opinion: “In California everyone goes to a therapist, is a therapist, or is a therapist going to a therapist.”

And why is it that writers write, but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham?

I learned a lot about my own California culture by just hanging around my two older brothers and their circle of friends. According to them, you know you’re a real native Californian because you’ve asked at least one female friend: “Are those real or fake?”

I also learned to enjoy our paradise weather, miles of beautiful white-sand beaches, endless panorama of palm trees, exotic landscapes with an abundance of drop-dead gorgeous bikini-clad beach girls with pierced-perfect navels, who cause many men to revert to stuttering. And of course, the obligatory closing of each summer’s day with breathtaking, giant orange sunsets.

Along with our famous sushi restaurants, yoga classes, meditation groups, and jogging, we have a Golden Rule here in California which other states have stolen and copied, therefore, making our ‘sacred chant’ common knowledge. It is a cardinal rule when we Californians often stand-up and repeat together -- out loud, in group unison – at various California meditation classes: “GROWING OLD IS MANDATORY . . . GROWING-UP IS OPTIONAL.” make amends but not one amend?

If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why didn't preachers praught?

If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?

Sometimes I think all the folks who grew up speaking English should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.

In what other language do people recite at a play and play at a recital?

We ship by truck but send cargo by ship...

We have noses that run and feet that smell.

We park in a driveway and drive in a parkway.

And how can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, While a wise man and a wise guy are opposites?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language In which your house can burn up as it burns down, In which you fill in a form by filling it out, And in which an alarm goes off by going on.

All Californians live by this rule.

We also never stray far from our sense of humor, with some Californians – it has been alleged -- born with the congenital “tongue-in-cheek” condition.

Everyone is made to feel young in our Golden Bear State.

Even though there may be an occasional ‘generation gap’ in word communication between young and old. Especially in today’s world of computers, emails, and social media. This was evident when I asked my friend Joey’s grandfather “Do you Tweet?” He answered me, “Not really. I just fart like everyone else.”

And yes – to reiterate -- I’m a California boy, born and bred for mischief and fanciful tales.

BEACH BOYS, BIKINIS & PALM TREES. Along with our very own, inimitable sub-culture, we Californians have The Beach Boys, our very own home-grown, truly legendary rock ‘n’ roll band, formed from a garage, back in 1961. All original five members were born and raised in Hawthorne, California, less than five miles from the beach.

Twins Celebrate 90th Birthday Together! – It’s not very often, if ever, that you hear of twins celebrating their 90th birthday together, but it did happen recently in San Marcos. Twins Harry Roth and Helen Roth Sollman just celebrated this special occasion in San Marcos where Helen now lives and has lived for the past two years. When they celebrated their 70th, 75th, 80th, and 85th birthdays together, Helen went to Seattle on each of those occasions from Evansville, IN, where she had moved back to some years earlier.

They were born in Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, MO, and were not expected to live, as each weighed under 3 lbs, but their father was determined the babies were not going to die, and of course they did survive to be able to share their birthday together.

They both grew up in “Evansville where they lived until Harry left for college at Purdue University and Helen married and moved away. She moved several times.

A,” with the lyrics creating sensual images of beautiful white sand beaches, adorned by beautiful, tanned bikiniclad girls cavorting under the sun, against the backdrop of exotic palm trees.

Happy Holidays from Escondido Public Library – Holiday Hours are 9:30am-5pm on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve; closed on both holidays. Events at the Public Library for December include: 2nd Saturday Concert Series presents Ekaterina Bessmeltseva & Hugo Nogueira on Saturday, December 14, from 3pm4:30pm, in the Turrentine Room, and is appropriate for all ages. The repertoire of this recital consists of nineteenth-century music originally written for classical guitar and piano. Interestingly enough, there were quite a few composers who wrote music for this uncommon instrumentation.

Although composers such as Mauro Giuliani (Italy), Ferdinando Carulli (Italy), and Anton Diabelli (Austria) has been recognized as a representative depiction of their epoch, it is still difficult to find a concert built on the repertoire for guitar and piano. Hence, this project is based on disseminating such marvelous music.

Taos Airlines will begin service Jan. 9, 2020, to ferry passengers on a 30-seat, twin-engine jet to one of the top ski resorts in the county, the Taos Ski Valley. Three nonstop, roundtrip flights are scheduled to fly on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays as service will run through the end of March, according to Joe Zvada, director of aviation for Taos Airlines.

“We see Southern California as a great extension for Taos,” Zvada said. “We chose Carlsbad for a number of reasons, and we like its location … like its facilities and think it matches well with the experience both on the jet and the resort in Taos.”

The nonprofit Preserve Calavera announced Friday it has filed a lawsuit challenging Oceanside’s approval last month of North River Farms, a 585-home development proposed for the city’s rural Morro Hills area.

“We have long referred to this as the ‘egregious North River Farms Project,’” said Diane Nygaard, president of Preserve Calavera, in a news release. “It represents the worst kind of sprawl development, placing dense housing where it was not planned, where there is inadequate infrastructure, and where the local community ends up paying a high price.”

These two legislators deserve your continued admiration and support.

The Staying Power of Ads in The Paper

Lyle, I just found an old copy of The Paper and read about THE INDIAN STORE.

Reminded me of a story I'd heard long time ago.

A salesman was travelling on a bus out west. At a rest stop at an Indian Trading Post he stayed at his seat.

The driver said to him " See that old Indian sitting on the steps of the trading post? Well, he has a remarkable memory". So the sales-

At the same time, Assemblymember Waldron supports Mental Health Care and support for those who need help with addition as well as homelessness.

They both have their fingers on the pulse of the community and are championing legislation (or opposing it) that benefits (or hurts) their constituents.

Supervisor Desmond’s stand agains SANDAG and opposing funding for “bike lanes” that should be going to the North San Diego County Hiway System is right on targer. SANDAG has gotten too big for its britches and often overrides the vote of the people.

Most of the community respects the Joor Man, and would be unhappy if he left town.

The lawsuit says the development would reduce public safety, increase greenhouse gases and bring the permanent loss of more than 150 acres of prime farmland.

Arie is “old school” and has no time for cell phones or computers.

When Arie told me he had bought a computer, it came as a major surprise and a bit of a shock. Anyone who knows Arie will know he’ll master this new technology. I’ll help him, my son, Kenny, who is a technical whiz, will help him.

An influx of foreign tourists, all chompin’ at the bit, and vicariously singing the lyrics of their favorite Beach Boys songs, all wished to now witness this vibrant California palette of colorful experiences and sensual delights, breathtaking seascapes, and exotic topography where snow skiing, surfing, and mountain hiking can all be experienced, literally, in the same day!

All wrapped in carefree songs.

No longer just a fanciful dream, but a reality.

By July of 1964 “All Summer Long” became the top hit in the U. S.

But the world was now ‘crashing’ the California party.

Lustful titles such as “Kiss Me, Baby” and “The Warmth of the Sun” all were music-and-song with the California ‘scene’ in the backdrop.

In time, The Beach Boys would have over 80 California songs hit the top music charts around the planet. The Beach Boys’ songs: “Little Deuce Coupe,” and “Let Him Run Wild,” would eventually be reminiscent of Hollywood movies, such as “American Graffiti” with the real-life drama actually occurring on

man thought to go over and talk to him. To test his memory, he asked the old Indian " What did you have for breakfast ten years ago today?"

The Old Indian said "Eggs."

Just then the driver called, "All aboard!"

So he got on the bus. "Anybody can have eggs for breakfast. What's so remarkable about that?" And, forgot about it.

Fifteen years later the salesman happened to be on the bus that stopped at the same Indian trading post. The same Old Indian was sitting on the steps of the trading post.

The salesman wen over to him and greeted him with what he though to be a good Indian greeting. He said "How" The Indian said "Scrambled".

The heartstrings of movie fans watching “American Graffiti” outside of California, all wistfully looked westward, in the direction of the Golden State.

There was no room for denial, or personal deceit. Increasing annual record numbers of tourists are the “proof of the pudding.”

A POSTCARD FROM CALIFORNIA.

In Japan, The Beach Boys’ hit single from their album, “A Postcard from California” created a historic, and unprecedented, impact on the entire nation of Japan, with the album deeply affecting all the Japanese people, across all ages, demographics, and ideologies, as no other American song, before or since.

Why?

Because, The Beach Boys album “A Postcard from California” contained a charity-raising single called “Don’t Fight the Sea,” to help aid the victims of the deadly 2011 Japan earthquake and tsunami victims. The 9.1 magnitude earthquake, at a depth of 15.2 miles, created 30-foot high waves and was the largest and most ferocious earthquake ever to hit Japan, resulting in more than 120,000 buildings

I was a little dismayed in this last issue reading Chuckles. On page 5, I couldn’t find the reason why Mr Chuckles was searching for Bernie Sanders bumper stickers? Really left me hanging ! Where did the rest of the story go? . .(“we always look for cars with Bernie Sanders stickers. We try to have a little fun each day now that we’re retired. It’s so important at our age.”)

World, but, these newly-established immigrants now dream of continuing westward, out of the east.

As the author records, “There is a whole quality of hope here (in the west) and that the future is still open-ended. In the way that people (used) to come to America.”

In her final analysis, which world polls and U. S. statistics confirm, Carolyn See writes: “California is the repository of America’s dreams, a place that is to America what America is to the rest of the world.”

How did all this global “California Dreaming” concept begin? And why? Let’s take a brief look back in time, at the beginning.

POWERFUL WORDS THAT MOVED A NATION.

Although famed author and statesman, Horace Greeley (1811-1872), himself, never claimed he originated the phrase, “Go west young man, go west,” it was Greeley’s version which became, by far, the most repeated. And the most famous. To the point where it, literally, moved a nation of people towards the Pacific.

Westward migrations within our own United States are nothing new in our history books, with significant westward migrations recorded as early as the 1830s and 1840s.

However, Horace Greeley’s pronouncement, somehow, was a different kindling for the fires that burned within Americans who dreamed of a better life in the Golden Bear State known as California.

As founder and editor of the New York-Tribune (one of the greatest newspapers of its era), Greeley printed a single sentence as part of his editorial column, on July 13, 1865, which simply said: “Go west, young man, and grow up with the country.”

Unlike previous announcements expressing the same sentiment, Greeley’s clarion via the powerful New YorkTribune, gave his opinion vastly, greater exposure. That simple piece of advice would prove historic, effectively changing the human and cultural landscape of America forever.

Health Reform

Last week I gave the keynote speech at the State of Reform Health Policy Conference in San Diego, one of the largest, most diverse gatherings of health care executives and policy makers in California. Health care is one of my passions, and as a member of the Assembly Health Committee, I was thrilled to be invited.

Mental health is a major topic. One in six California adults experience some form of mental illness, and two-thirds of children and adolescents suffering from depressive episodes go untreated. More empowerment for locals on the front lines of mental health treatment is a must. This year, legislation I authored to strengthen local mental health boards became law.

California faces a shortage of 4,100 primary care clinicians and will have only two-thirds of the psychiatrists needed in 2030. Two bills that would help by expanding the health care workforce and reducing the disparity in mental health services stalled in 2019. We’ll be revisiting these issues next year.

Addressing substance abuse is critical. Preliminary data indicate that more than 2,300 opioid-related deaths occurred in 2018 alone.

Despite demonstrated success of medication-assisted treatments

(MAT), far too few MAT providers have been certified. Despite overwhelming bipartisan support, my MAT funding request and 2019 bipartisan legislation stalled, but the problem isn’t going away.

Health care and homelessness are directly linked. Addressing the issue requires interdisciplinary solutions involving housing policy, public safety, human services and more. Though homelessness results in three deaths per day in Los Angeles alone, it receives less attention than other, less deadly state emergencies. An all-hands-ondeck effort will be necessary to help resolve this major public health/safety issue.

Health care, homelessness, substance abuse – are among the state’s most pressing policy issues.

California must make it the priority it should be, with much work necessary in 2020. \ Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron, R-Escondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

More Bike Lanes!?

I sound like a broken record, but SANDAG is up to their usual tricks. The latest update comes from SANDAG’s staff and their proposal to use an extra $90 million on bike lanes. Time and time again, I’ve sat in our SANDAG meetings and heard how the road projects the voters were promised, can’t be fulfilled due to a lack of money. A few months ago, we passed an agreement at SANDAG that prioritized SR-52, SR-67 and SR-78, yet when it comes time, this new money is going to bikes.

So far, SANDAG has spent $123 million on the Regional Bike Plan for San Diego County. They’ve only completed 8.8 miles, which breaks down to a little under $14 million per mile, FOR BIKE LANES! I am not anti-bikes, I even understand that in certain areas people can use them to and from work.

But, less than 2% of the population uses bikes as their means of trans-

portation. While about 96.5% of people use the highways and roads.

Choosing to spend $90 million for bike lanes over roads and freeways is a decision for people to feel good about and not about doing the right thing for San Diegans.

Luckily, Chairman Steve Vaus was able to delay the vote on the bike lanes to a later date, but this will come back again. No matter when we vote on this matter, we need to continue to prioritize the 52, 67, 78 and reduce gridlock. Until then, I will not support any bike lanes.

returning from the Civil War, many of whom moved west to take up a homestead.”

And they did, in steady streams -- nonstop -- along with occasional “spikes” of historic “relocations,” such as found during the Dust Bowl migration to California during the Great Depression in the 1930s from Oklahoma, Arkansas, Texas, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico and neighboring states, with some 2.5-million Dust Bowl refugees emptying out of the Great Plains States.

EARLIEST CALIFORNIA DREAMS BEGINS.

Although ‘west’ encompasses a large expanse of U. S. states, it would be California -- bordering the great blue Pacific waters – that would prove the most magnetic and, thus, the most populated. The earlier dreams begat from the California Gold Rush of 1848 and 1849 (which preceded Horace Greeley’s westward advice) were suddenly resurrected and renewed in homesteading out west.

Today, with its nearly 40-million residents, California has a bigger population than most European countries.

Imagine that, a single U. S. State vs an entire country in population.

It is most sobering to translate those same stats in an oblique way: Of the 44 countries in Europe (recognized by the United Nations), only eight have populations larger than the state of California.

And if the dreaded supermega-size-earthquake, affectionately called “The Big One” in Hollywood disaster films, ever slices half of the Golden State into the Pacific Ocean, the remaining half of the state would still be more populated than many countries in Europe.

THE BEAUTY OF CALIFORNIA GIRLS CONTROVERSY.

The huge blockbuster song “California Girls” by The Beach Boys, and released on July 12, 1965, touted California girls as the most beautiful in the entire world.

The song lyrics risked losing fans outside of California, possibly offending and alienating loyal Beach Boys fans with such lyrics as: “I’ve been all around this great big world, and I’ve seen all kinds of girls, but I couldn’t wait to get back to the States, back to the

King of Oil – America’s Richest Man -- Ever

John Davison Rockefeller Sr., was one of the original six moguls who built America and was the world’s historic wealthiest ever at an estimated $409 billion (in 2019 dollars).

2 percent of the national economy. In 1913, his peak net worth was estimated at $336 billion (inflation-adjusted for 2007 dollars). Rockefeller spent the last 40 years of his life in retirement at his estate in Westchester County, New York.

His fortune was mainly used to create the modern systematic approach of targeted philanthropy. Rockefeller’s foundations pioneered the development of medical research and were instrumental in the near-eradication of hookworm and yellow fever in the United States.

Rockefeller was a devout Northern Baptist and supported many churchbased institutions. Rockefeller adhered to total abstinence from alcohol and tobacco throughout his life. A faithful congregant of the Erie Street Baptist Mission Church, he taught Sunday school, and served as a trustee, clerk and occasional janitor. Religion was a guiding force throughout his life and Rockefeller believed it to be the source of his success. He also was considered a supporter of capitalism based on a perspective of social Darwinism and was quoted often as saying: "The growth of a large business is merely a survival of the fittest.”

Rockefeller often offered his shares as payment for a business, and quite a few of whom became very wealthy as managers as well as owners in Standard Oil. They include politicians and writers, some of whom served Rockefeller's interests, and some of whom built their careers by fighting Rockefeller and the "robber barons".

Controlling the American petroleum industry made John D. Rockefeller one of the so-called “robber barons of the 19th and 20th centuries. He controlled first kerosene, then motor oil and gasoline.

Rockefeller was born on July 8, 1839.

He controlled the industry for all of his adult life. He became a business magnate, industrialist, and philanthropist.

Rockefeller is widely considered the wealthiest in modern history.

In 1867, at age 28, with a company owned by Rockefeller, his brother, and two partners, they formed Standard Oil, but instead of drilling for oil, they concentrated on refining.

As the need for kerosene and gasoline grew, Rockefeller's wealth soared, controlling 90 percent of all oil in the United States. Oil was used throughout the country as a source for fueling lamps until the introduction of electricity and as a fuel and lubricant after the automobile. the of invention Furthermore, Rockefeller gained enormous influence over the railroad industry, which transported his oil around the country. Some of them still have the highest level of revenue in the world.

The song’s release could have been a promotional nightmare for the group’s marketing team, because the lyrics clearly mentioned East coast girls, Southern girls, and even MidWestern girls . . . as not even holding a candle to the goddesses who resided within California.

Remarkably, the song was an instant hit in both domestic and foreign markets! The song is now considered by world music critics to be “emblematic of the 1960s California sound era.”

The Beach Boys’ “California Girls” hit recording was included in “The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame,” as well as being inducted into the “Grammy Award Hall of Fame.” And Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it among the “Top 500 Songs of All-Time.”

Unlike The Beach Boys, some high-profile VIPs were not as lucky in citing the California girls as the most beautiful on Earth. Such opinions can be viewed as divisive and egobashing to listeners. Such was the unfortunate case with

America’s most powerful and most popular radio talk show host, Rush Limbaugh. With a staggering number of over 256 million listeners, the Rush Limbaugh Radio Show has the highest-rated radio show in the entire United States – by far.

With U. S. Presidents as frequent live radio guests, and topics of discussion on such luminaries as Pope Benedict XVI, Limbaugh’s massivelyinfluential airwaves originate near his home in Palm Beach County, Florida, where he has lived since 1996.

It was here, on the Rush Limbaugh Show, that the scene of the great “California Remark” took place.

Thinking his radio’s studio microphone was turned off, Limbaugh quipped ‘live’ on the air: “Have you ever noticed that the farther west you go, the prettier the girls become?”

What a bombshell that proved to be. Limbaugh, who was ostensibly speaking, particularly, of California girls, quickly apologized to his loyal nonCalifornia fan base, which were now deeply offended (by comparison) from all over the United States – outside the boundaries of California – especially from New York, where Rush Limbaugh’s radio show first originated at WABC New York City.

Though he profusely apologized, it was too late, the whole world now knew of Limbaugh’s viewpoint on feminine beauty as being unmatched in the Golden Bear State of California.

In the wake of this verbal faux pas, there would be vestiges of the lyrics on The Beach Boys’ California Girls recording, hauntingly omnipresent in the minds of music fans: “The West coast has the sunshine, and the girls all get so tanned . . . I wish they all could be California girls . . .”

Rush Limbaugh’s apology was akin to trying to put squeezedout toothpaste back into the tube. It is humanly impossible to recall words.

Nonetheless, I always admired Mr. Limbaugh, and still do.

Project Wildlife Gets Influx of Seabirds After Rain - San Diego Humane Society is preparing for another round of rain. With the recent rainstorms in San Diego, Project Wildlife has seen an influx in seabirds who have washed up from the ocean. The rain and wind causes weaker seabirds to become beached. The seabirds are too weak to get past the waves into the open ocean, and fluctuating ocean temperatures cause the fish they feed on to dive lower than normal, making it harder for the birds to eat.

Project Wildlife staff has been caring for Western Grebes, Surf Scoters, Fulmars, Loons and a Blue-Footed Booby this week at the Chuck & Pilar Bahde Wildlife Center. The birds have been transferred to SeaWorld for further rehabilitation. Tips for the Public - If you see a seabird in distress, please contact a life guard, San Diego Humane Society’s Humane Law Enforcement at 619-299-7012 (press 1) or SeaWorld (1-800-541-SEAL). If the animal is in immediate danger in an area that is easily accessed, wrap the animal in a towel to cover the bird’s head and protect yourself from talons. Then place the bird in a box or pet carrier and transport to Project Wildlife (5433 Gaines St. San Diego, CA 92110). Do not try to feed sick or injured birds.

Building Family Identity

The pace of our lives and the opportunities available today are so numerous that it’s easy to get pulled away from what really matters.

December is one of the best times of year to reflect and refocus on the things that really matter. And it is the best time to build something we don’t think about very often, and that’s family identity.

Having a sense of family identity means I know who I am and how I fit into this world. I’m part of the Smith family. Or the Jones clan.

“We do XYZ together!” People who have a sense of family identity tend to have better self-images, look at life more hopefully, and be able to take more risks.

With that in mind, I’d like to suggest a new family identity-builder

Traditions are what bond families together. We remember good times together, but we especially remember repeated good times we do together year after year after year.

One tradition of my family’s best traditions was attending church as a family on Christmas Eve. We stopped when my parents divorced, but the memory lives on.

Attending Christmas Eve services could be a very positive tradition for you and your family as well.

Check out church websites for Christmas Eve service times, dress up (a little bit) and experience the wonder of the Christmas story together. You’ll find yourself slowing down, bonding together, and drawing closer to God. What could be better?

As some of you may know, there is an initiative to have all the North County cities send two of their electeds to work on homelessness from a regional perspective. I was elected the chair of that group and so I think it is worth discussing, because again there is no easy fix. I may repeat a few things but it’s worth it.

As I stated earlier we have a housing challenge. But we also have a housing challenge when you think about homelessness. Now when someone uses that word it conjures up an image but it is more complicated than that. More to follow…

We, Evelyn and I, already thought of him as our third son.

You notice I'm referring to Troy in the past tense.

Troy has died.

I got a call at about 5:45 this morning (Sunday, 12/8/19) from Edie, the love of his life, Edie.

"Lyle, this is Edie. I'm so sorry for calling you so early but . . . Troy died this morning. You were always so good to him. I knew you'd want to know."

"Oh, no!" I said . . . always the wordsmith; but that's about all I could think of to say . . . it was a shock.

"He got up this morning and just collapsed," said Edie. "We tried to bring him back with CPR but it didn't work. We called 911 and the paramedics were here in no time.

They worked on him for over and

hour. No success. He's gone."

This is the second time Troy has died.

He died about a year ago and they brought him back . . . and then they did a heart valve transplant, giving him a "bovine valve," which had come from a cow but seemed to work just fine.

The "they" we refer to is the VA. Veteran's Administration. I'm a big admirer of theirs. As was Troy. The VA took good care of both of us with our medical issues.

Troy had been in the Honor Guard in Washington, D. C. during his stint in the military. They don't let just anybody in the Honor Guard.

You have to be special.

Troy was special. And now, Troy will have an honor guard give him full military honors as he is laid to rest in a military cemetery in Washington state.

A Salute to our Senior Volunteers

Senior residents are an important part of Vista’s volunteer community, with hundreds of seniors donating their time to make a difference each year. Two departments, currently in need of senior volunteers are the Vista Fire Department and the Vista Sheriff’s Station. Vista Fire senior volunteers help with day-to-day administrative services; fire prevention education; conducting station tours, assisting with the Smoke Alarm program; and providing support such as hydration and food to firefighters at fires and other extended emergency incidents. Whenever I had a technical issue the first person I'd call was Troy. He'd have it fixed in no time.

For the past several years, over the phone. He could walk even a klutz like me through the procedures to make the computer work again.

He had moved from San Diego County to up near Tacoma, Washington, where he met the love of his life, Edie Metz. Together, they bought a large piece of land, cleared it, and built a new home, complete with stable for horses.

Troy worked way too hard on this project and both Evelyn, I, and Edie, kept telling him to slow down. But he would work all day, into the evening hours. And he wound up in the hospital several times as a result.

Before he left San Diego I saw Troy could do magnificent gardening, landscaping, carpentry, heavy labor, sensitive art work, he did it all.

And he was a big, lovable bear of a man.

Troy and I have been together for the better part of the 20+ years I and Evelyn have owned The Paper.

He did all of our cover art as well as building ads for advertising clients of ours. Often, I'd have an

idea and put together what I thought was fairly decent cover art . . . or a fairly decent ad. Then I'd send it to Troy. He'd work on it and send it back. It was always about 1000% better.

In those 20+ years and over 1000 cover art illustrations I think I sent, maybe, five or six covers back to Troy to do over. He almost always got it right; he and I were almost always on the same wavelength as to what we wanted portrayed on the cover to illustrate the cover story.

Very, very seldom did we ever disagree. Twenty years is a long time.

You get to know a guy.

And to love him.

Evelyn and I are mourning the loss of Troy, right along with Edie, and all those who knew and loved him.

He was a very special, very talented man.

He is missed and will always be missed. And remembered.

Rest in Peace, Troy. Ya done good!

We have been building our finished goods inventory of new AMD Ryzen based desktop computers. These PCs range from a $495 basic workstation to a $1000 gamer/designer workstation that benchmarks faster than the fastest Intel i7. They all look exactly the same in our new “Blackbird” case. NOTICE OF INTENDED DECISION (Administrative)

The Planning Division Manager of the City of San Marcos has considered the proposed project and does intends to APPROVE the Wireless Telecommunication Facility Administrative Permit (WTFA19-0001) on December 23, 2019.

Project No.: WTFA19-0001 Applicant(s): CCTM1 LLC Crown Castle Request: A Wireless Telecommunication Facility Administrative (WTFA) Permit to allow the modification of an existing wireless telecommunication facility from an eighteen (18) inch diameter “flag pole” design into a thirty-two (32) inch diameter “uniform pole concealment canister” type design (no height change) and install a new corrugated metal gate on the existing equipment enclosure to match existing trash enclosures in the vicinity of the project site, in the Light Industrial (L-I) Zone in the Questhaven/La Costa Meadows Neighborhood.

Environmental Determination: In accordance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the City of San Marcos did find the project Categorically Exempt (EX19037) pursuant to Section 15301 Class 1 of the California Code of Regulations (CCR), in that this is an existing facility with no minor alterations.
