Editor’s Note: As promised, we present another in a series of journal entries dictated by James P. Beckwourth, an adventurer, explorer, scout, hunter, trapper, pioneer, emigrant and, for a time, Indian Chief of the Crows.

The narrative is almost amusing in that hardy pioneers did not really talk in such elegant terms. Clearly, T. D. Bonner, who writes this biography, has exercised considerable ‘poetic license’ in describing the adventures in such elegant prose. Here, then, more in the continuing saga describing the trek out West by James P. Beckwourth: Departure from the Fort with the Crows.—I am elected First Counselor of the Nation.— Death of the head Chief —I am appointed Successor.— Last Moments of the Chief.

on to the Little Horn River, six or eight days' travel from the fort. We encamped here for the purpose of planting tobacco, which is done by the prophets and medicine men; after which a great feast is provided, and a general time of dancing and rejoicing follows.

The tobacco-plant grows spontaneously in the Snake country, but it is cultivated by the Crows and several other tribes. It is a tolerably good substitute for the cultivated species, for the purpose of smoking, but it is unfit to chew. The plant very closely resembles garden sage, and forms into heads similar to the domestic flax.

At this camp the First Counselor made a speech to the warriors, and spoke in substance as follows "Warriors! Red Bird has served you faithfully many winters. He is now old. He can be young no more. His body has been made weak by the numerous wounds he has received in fighting the enemies of the Crows. He now wishes for repose, and not to be disturbed in his slumbers by being called into

the council at all hours of the night, when his body, once so powerful, now requires rest. He is desirous of joining the medicine men, that he will not be compelled to go to war; but he will always be ready to defend his own village, the women and the helpless, and to give up his life for them. Red Bird's medicine in the warpath has grown weak; let the younger warriors, who are brave and active, have an opportunity to try their medicine. We have plenty who deserve to be promoted, who are as brave as the she-bear, and as swift as the antelope. Warriors, I now give up my position as first counselor. I have done." Long Hair replied as follows:

"Red Bird, we feel that our hearts are sorry that you have seen fit to cease to be our first counselor. You have served our people long and faithfully. Your counsel has been good: under your wise direction we have prospered. We would rather that you had still directed us; but you say it is your desire to have repose. Be it so. We know that your

body is weak. We know that you have received numerous wounds from the weapons of our enemies. We know that you never turned your back upon the foe. Now we need a sixth counselor, and must select one from the braves here present. Will you name him for us?" "No," said the old man; "I have never had any enemies among my braves, and I do not wish to make them now. I should not know which to choose, were I to attempt it. They are all brave."

It was at length resolved that one of the medicine men should be blindfolded, and go among the most distinguished braves, and whoever he first placed his hand upon should take his seat as sixth counselor. The distinguished braves then gathered promiscuously together; a close bandage was placed over the eyes of the medicine man, and away he went among the crowd. The five counselors being among the braves, he placed his hand on one of them, and cried out, "Here is your sixth

"You are wrong," said Long Hair; "he is counselor already."

He then went through the crowd, and laid his hand upon another brave, crying out as before. Long Bow was therefore declared to be the choice of the people for sixth counselor of the nation. When the seat of the first counselor falls vacant, the others are elevated one degree, thus leaving the lowest station vacant. The village now crossed the Big Horn on their way to Sun River Creek, a small tributary of the Yellow Stone. At Big Horn I took forty warriors, and started in quest of Black Feet and horses. After traveling two days, I was overtaken by the head chief, A-rapoo-ash, with one hundred and seventy-five warriors. He was evidently chagrined about something. Not wishing him to go to war, as I expected nothing less than that he would rush in and throw away his life, I told him that I should avoid the war-path, that my medicine told me my warpath was bad, and I intended to return to the village. I started forthwith, and he followed me. On coming in sight of the village, we halted and encamped for the night.

I stole away in the night with seventy-five warriors, and made for the enemy's country, hoping that the old chief would return to the village. But he took my trail the

Hunter was 4 years old and was staying with his grandfather for a few days.

He'd been playing outside with the other kids, when he came into the house and asked, 'Grandpa, what's that called when two people sleep in the same bedroom and one is on top of the other?' His Grandpa was a little taken aback but he decided to tell him the truth.

'Well, Hunter, it's called sexual intercourse.'

'Oh,' Little Hunter said, 'OK,' and went back outside to play with the other kids. A few minutes later he came

next morning, and overtook me with his remaining followers.

He advanced to me, and said, "Bloody Arm, you are a great warrior; you do not wish me to go to war, but I will. I shall never return to the village. I am going to die. The Crows are fools. I have given them good counsel, and they would not listen to my words. I have fought for them during many years. I have shed much blood for them. I have tried to make them a great people, but they have closed their ears. I am going to the big village of the Great Spirit. If you do not wish to go in the path with me, you can go in another path; I will find the enemy alone, and die."

When he had finished speaking, he dismounted. Then, placing the edge of his shield on some buffalo chips, he said, "Warriors, you see my shield. If it rises, I shall die before I return to the village; if not, I shall return." He then addressed the sun for some minutes, after which he took his lance and made several motions with it. Then, giving a bound, the shield was raised as high as his head, and not a warrior saw him touch it. Then every one present believed his words, namely, that he would never return alive to the village. I knew that the shield must have some elevating agency, but it was concealed: my attention was so riveted upon the chief, that I did not discover the power that produced the seeming miracle. The scouts now ran in to report that there were fourteen Black Feet but a short distance off, who were approaching us on foot. All

A young, new Baptist minister was assigned a small church in town. He was fresh out of divinity school and training, anxious to take to his new church and save souls from the Devil. He was bright, friendly, inspired, and had only one drawback ... he was a dead ringer for Elvis Presley. The man could have been his mirror image. It was as if he was Elvis' twin, a doppelganger, the spitting image of the young King himself. His voice was even identical.

He'd arrived in town that Friday and put his few possessions in the parsonage next door to the church. It had been a long and tiring day, and he slept soundly that night alone in the parsonage. The next morning he awoke and fixed a light breakfast, then sat wondering what he would do for the rest of the day? He already had Sunday's sermon memorized. Then a thought struck him--he'd go from door to door in the neighborhood inviting everyone to his church the next day, kind of like a "grand opening." It wouldn't matter if they were good Baptists or not.

was then bustle of preparation for a moment, and the trick of the shield was forgotten. Away we sped to find the enemy. We speedily found them, and they, perceiving escape was impossible, prepared to sell their lives as dearly as they could.

The old chief was the first to charge impetuously upon the scanty foe; as his steed plunged through them, he cut down one with his battle-axe; then, wheeling and again passing their line, he clove a second. Again turning to pass the enemy's line a third time, he had already raised his arm to strike, when an arrow entered his body just below the hip, and passed clean through, showing itself near the shoulder. Every warrior paused in astonishment at seeing their chief thus furiously engaged; but when he fell a demon seemed suddenly to possess them, and the few surviving Black Feet were hewed to pieces in a moment. Every warrior gathered round the dying chief; his life-blood was fast draining from his mortal stroke.

"Warriors," he said, "I came here to die. My wish will soon be gratified. A-ra-poo-ash will lead you no more to war. My home will soon be in the Spirit Land. My people were fools, and would not listen to my counsel. Bloody Arm, come to me. You must now take the place of Ara-poo-ash. You are brave and wise. You fight the enemy, and vanquish them without losing our own warriors. Your medicine is powerful. Warriors, listen to your dying chief! You, Bloody Arm, are the only brave who can keep the

They could be of any faith and be welcomed and still hear the word of God, mix with their other neighbors, and meet the new minister. So, bright and early, he began walking down the sidewalk to the nearest house. He paused, somewhat shyly, at the foot of the porch steps. Then he gathered his courage and stepped up to the door and knocked. Presently a frumpy-looking middle-aged housewife still in her robe came to the door.

He said, "Good morning, mam. My name is Reverend Bob Wilson and I'm the new minister of the Baptist church down the street. I'd like to invite you and your loved ones to services tomorrow morning. It'll be my first sermon in my first church and I'd be delighted if you and yours would come to share..."

The woman's jaw dropped to her chest and she began screaming, "ELVIS! ELVIS! IT'S ELVIS PRESLEY!" having not heard a word he said, simply awestruck that the King of Rock n' Roll was on her porch in person. She jerked open the door and flung herself at him, her eyes closed and lips puckered for a big kiss. This terrified the shy young minister who leaped off her porch and began running as hard as he could. It was a cou-

nation together. The Crows disobeyed my orders, and I did not like to punish them for it. I loved my people too well; I was too kind to them for their own good. I was too indulgent. They all fear you, and will obey your words. If they obey you, they will increase and become a powerful people, as I have wished them to be; but if they disobey you, they will not be a nation two winters more. Their enemies are numerous and powerful, and they will rub out all the Crows unless they hearken to what you say. My eyes grow dim. Red Arm, are you listening? I can not see." "I am listening to all you say," I replied.

"It is well. Then take this shield and this medal; they both belong to you. The medal was brought from our great white father many winters ago by the red-headed chief. When you die, it belongs to him who succeeds you. Listen. Tell Nam-i-ne-dishee, the wife that I have always loved, that if our child, yet unborn, shall be a son, to tell him who his father was. Red Arm, listen." "I hear you," I said.

"Let my body be buried under this spot. Suffer no warrior to make a track on this war-ground for one season. Then come and seek my bones, and I will have something good for you.

ple of blocks before he gathered his wits and slowed down. He paused, catching his breath and again working up his courage, then knocked on the door of the house where he had stopped. A somewhat overweight older woman in hair curlers, carrying a basket of laundry answered this door. "Uhhm, hello, madam. I'm Reverend Bob Wilson, the new minister of the Baptist church a couple of blocks down the street and I'd like to invite you to..."

And the poor man got no further than that when she started shrieking at the top of her lungs, "ELVIS! ELVIS! IT'S ELVIS PRESLEY!" She nearly jerked the door off its hinges pulling it open and charging him, and she'd have pinned him to her porch if she hadn't tripped over the dropped laundry basket, screaming Elvis' name over and over. The panicked young minister jumped sideways five feet and began running again, scared out of his wits. This time it was three blocks before he could calm himself and stop.

He took a few deep breaths, used his hand to push his jetblack hair back into place, and knocked on the third door. When it opened he saw a drop-

Spirit. It sounds like the moaning of the mighty wind through the dark, gloomy forest. He calls for Ara-poo-ash to come to the spirit land. I must go. Re-mem-ber!" The word "remember" expired on his lips as his soul winged its flight to the spirit land. Every warrior (except Yellow Belly, who was a brother of the old chief) immediately set up the most dismal cryings that I have ever heard in my life. I dispatched a herald to the village to inform them of the head chief's death, and then burying him according to his directions we slowly proceeded homeward. My very soul sickened at the contemplation of the scenes that would be enacted at my arrival. When we drew in sight of the village, we found every lodge laid prostrate. We entered amid shrieks, cries, and yells. Blood was streaming from every conceivable part of the bodies of all who were old enough to comprehend their loss. Hundreds of fingers were dismembered; hair, torn from the head, lay in profusion about the paths; wails and moans in every direction assailed the ear, where unrestrained joy had a few hours before prevailed. This fearful mourning lasted until evening of the next day.

The morning following I ordered the removal of the village in the direction of the Rose Bud. We there built a council-lodge, and all the prophets and medicine men in the village were assembled in it on its completion. The national records were read over, and, after a lengthy ceremony performed by the great men, it was unanimously declared that they had elected me First Counselor, and that, conjointly with Long Hair, I was head chief of the nation. Which pronunciamiento was recorded. It then devolved upon me to deliver my inaugural address. As nearly as I can recollect, I spoke as follows "Brothers and warriors! The

great A-ra-poo-ash is no more. He has met his fathers and kindred who preceded him to the Spirit Land. He has told all concerning you that yet survive on earth. He has related your deeds of bravery, which makes the spirits rejoice; he has also told of your disobedience to your chief, which has made them cry and become dark. The Great Spirit becomes angry at you when he sees his heroes mourn. But, although you displeased Ara-poo-ash by disobedience, and made his heart to mourn, he intercedes for you there, that, if you now obey the chiefs you have chosen to lead you, your war-paths may constantly be prosperous; your buffalo and beaver shall always abound, and you may become a great and powerful people.

"I am now your great chief. If you obey what I say to you, I can make you all you wish to be. By my long stay with the whites, I possess advantages which the chiefs of no other tribe possess. I can get twice as much for our robes and beavers as you ever got before. I came back to you. I can talk to our white brethren, and they understand all my words. They know that if they cheat my people I shall find it out.

"My medicine tells me that we must not make war on our enemies, unless they first kill our people or steal our horses: we must then attack them with many warriors, so that we may run no danger of being rubbed out. I shall never consent for our nation to have more than two villages at one time. Let those two villages keep their warriors, their wives, and their children together, and not subdivide, when they are sure to be attacked by the enemies. When our village is united, no enemy will ever dare to attack it.

trapping. Our streams are full of beaver, as also are our prairies with buffalo. Our squaws excel all others in dressing robes, for which the whites pay us a great price. Then let us get all the robes they can dress, and not keep them in idleness as mere playthings. If we keep them at work, they will be healthy, and strong, and brave, when they become warriors. They can also buy every thing they require, both for themselves and their children, while the beavers of the warriors will also supply our wants.

"Warriors! How can we do all this, if we scatter over the country in numerous little villages, subject to continual attacks from our enemies, who will cut us off, a few at a time, until we are all rubbed out? No; obey me, and keep yourselves undivided; and if enemies attack us, we can kill ten of them when they kill one Crow: thus my medicine says. But if you disobey me, and will not hearken to my words, then I shall surely leave you, and return to my white friends, not enduring to see the nation become weak, and flying before their enemies, and our women and children carried into captivity. Obey and assist me, then, and I will do my best in your behalf. Warriors, I have done." This oration was received with undisguised approval, and I received the name of Good War Road. A herald having been dispatched to our other village to acquaint them with the death of our head chief, and request them to assemble at the Rose Bud, in order to meet our village and devote themselves to a general time of mourning, there met, in conformity with this summons, over ten thousand Crows at the place indicated. membered as readily as twigs, and blood was poured out like water. Many of the warriors would cut two gashes nearly the entire length of their arm; then, separating the skin from the flesh at one end, would grasp it in their other hand, and rip it asunder to the shoulder. Others would carve various devices upon their breasts and shoulders, and raise the skin in the same manner, to make the scars show to advantage after the wound was healed. Some of their mutilations were ghastly, and my heart sickened to look at them; but they would not appear to receive any pain from them.

It was frequently asked of me why I did not mourn. I told them that my medicine forbade me to mourn in their manner, but that I mourned in my heart, and in painting my face. I would frequently represent to them the folly of maiming themselves, and appearing before the eyes of the Great Spirit so greatly disfigured; but I lost my labor. By torturing themselves their pagan minds supposed they were rendering acceptable sacrifices to the Great Spirit, and performing penance for offenses against his will. It was religion; and to interfere with their received opinions would have subjected me to the imputation of infidel, and perhaps have entailed upon me expulsion from my high office.

The mourning over, I selected seventy young warriors, and started out in search of feats of arms (according to their custom), to prove my fortune in my new office. I crossed the Missouri into the Asne-boine country, where we fell in with fifteen Indians and four old women. We killed them all, and returned home with their scalps. There was but slight rejoicing on my return, on account of our recent affliction. I should have mentioned that at the assembly of our two villages a

“Why,” asked John, “doesn’t France send in the French Foreign Legion to Syria and Iraq. By all accounts they are some of the world’s finest warriors and they just might go a long way toward defeating ISIS.”

The idea just may have some merit. We took an in-depth look at the French Foreign Legion back in July of this year. You may want to revisit the story (or read it for the first time). Go here: http://issuu.com/awodigitaledition/docs/the_paper_july92015? e=2076238/14030894

Nation’s Largest Seawater Desalination Plant Operational

Operations are under way at the Carlsbad Desalination Plant which has already produced more than 1.5 billion gallons of locally controlled water for San Diego County, helping to minimize the region's vulnerability to the statewide drought. The plant is the result of a 30year Water Purchase Agreement between the plant's developer and owner, Poseidon Water, and the San Diego County Water Authority for the production of up to 56,000 acre-feet of water per year, enough to meet the needs of approximately 400,000 people. It is a major component of the Water Authority's multi-decade strategy to diversify the region's water supply portfolio.

The $1 billion desalination project provides a highly reliable water supply produced with state-ofthe-art technology to reduce energy demands, and it will be the first water infrastructure project in the state to have a zero net carbon footprint. The plant uses reverse osmosis to produce approximately 10 percent of the region's water supply; it is a core supply regardless of weather conditions, and it is blended with water from other sources for regional distribution.

Gifts for Teens Needed This Week – Lifeline staff and volunteers are so proud of the kids they support. Through no fault of their own, these kids have significant odds to overcome and are working to truly change the trajectory of their lives. During the holidays, Lifeline wants to do even more and provide holiday gifts for more than 700 kids who might otherwise go without. This effort is in addition to our families in need who are being ‘adopted’! Thank you to Toys for Tots for donating more than 600 toys! Unfortunately, we found out that Toys for Tots is focused this year on collecting gifts for kids under the age of 13, meaning that we are very low on gifts for teenagers. We would love to give gifts to another 100 teens, ages 13 to 18, this week. Can you help? Movie tickets, soccer balls, sporting equipment, and ‘spa’ products are all items our teens appreciate. That said, you know that shopping for teens is hard! Gift cards to Target, Walmart, iTunes and Amazon are always a big hit. To Donate, since time is of the essence and too late to wait for gifts to be dropped off, donate online today and Lifeline will purchase the gift for you. Lifeline thanks all the volunteers, donors and community sponsors. You have written checks, sponsored families in need, and volunteered countless hours. We are grateful! This has been a heartwarming season because of YOU. We are overwhelmed by your generosity

Seems someone sent in an obituary that claimed Santa Claus had died. Some way, somehow, it got by the editors and made it into the paper’s website. Children can rest assured that Santa Claus is alive and well, after Norway's largest newspaper apologized Friday for announcing that he had died at the age of 227. An obituary had appeared on Aftenposten's website last Thursday announcing that Santa had passed away after a very long and active life.

The notice added that a funeral for Santa, born on December 12, 1788, would be held on December 28 at the "Chapel of the North Pole."

It was unclear how the mischievous announcement managed to make it onto Aftenposten's site, but the newspaper has promised to "review its internal processes to establish what went wrong."

The obituary, which did not appear in the paper's print edition, has been removed from the website. ••••• Evelyn and I were out ringing the bells for the Salvation Army again this year. amazing!! It's like someone opened a window and let all the fresh air in! You published his photo and I recognized him a while back at San Marcos' Walmart store! Though I haven't seen him there lately.

Anyway, we've been reading the stories on Time Machines (totally awesome!), and Boys Who Are Girls (I never heard of Milton Berle before, but the man sounds revolutionary!). So anyway, we went into your archives and found Gomez stories on UFOs, Houdini the Magician, and What Makes People Laugh in the World, and the best Mark Twain story I've ever read on the hidden side of Mark Twain (showed my Lit teacher and it wowed him!). Anyway, he's all-over the place in his writings and unpredictable! We like that! And now we can't wait to pick up a new issue cause we just don't know what he's going to write about next! My friend's dad said he used to pick up your paper at Kaiser (?) hospital, but he doesn't see it there anymore and he's a bit bummed out over that! He used to read it when he'd see his doctor.

Mistrial Declared for Gang Member, First of Four Tried in Deaths of Two Oceanside Teens

A 21-year-old man escaped firstdegree murder charges, at least temporarily, in the 2013 shooting at an Oceanside park that killed two teenagers and wounded two others. Santo Diaz’s case dealt with charges of second-degree murder and attempted murder. Since the jury was unable to come to a unanimous decision the judge declared a mistrial on those counts.

Had he been convicted of premeditated murder, the defendant — who described himself in court as a former gang member —faced a possible sentence of life in prison without parole. Diaz was the first of four defendants to be tried in the slayings of Melanie Virgen, 13, and Edgar Sanchez, 15, who were gunned down as they sat on a couch at the top of a hill at Libby Lake Community Park. Two other male teens, ages 17 and 18 at the time, were shot and seriously hurt, but survived. Diaz’s lawyer asked Judge

High Priced Talent

As a long time Escondido resident it has been disquieting to learn that our relatively small city has enjoyed the services of the highest paid city attorney in California along with a city manager who is among the highest paid in our state. What, I wonder, has Escondido profited from this expenditure? Obviously having the highest paid city attorney didn’t prevent our city council from arbitrarily imposing an unwise zoning change upon former Escondido Country Club real estate. The resultant litigation defended by “outside council” that the city effectively lost is more of a testament for a less expensive city attorney.

Both the city’s attorney and manager are now retiring after long tenures in their jobs with Escondido and at life-time pay (at our expense) for the rest of their lives that most people only see in their dreams. It would be interesting to see a listing of their accomplishments. Would the list include the “Stuck in the Rough” issue; the embarrassing questionable dismissal of a popular police chief; costly but failed negotiations for a local hotel? What successes might appear on the list? That Messrs. Epps and Phillips are well-qualified, experienced and honorable gentlemen is not questioned. However, how does Escondido, a city of modest distinction, justify professional staffing at such a high cost com-

The Work Goes On

The Legislature adjourned for the first half of the 20152016 session in September, allowing members to return home to work on issues vital to their districts.

Specifically, the fall break is a time I use to reconnect with the real world outside of Sacramento, including family, friends, and the needs of my small business. Being home gives me the opportunity to meet with individuals and groups here in the district to recap the key issues addressed this year and to forecast major issues on the agenda for next year. Since we adjourned I have met with civic groups in Escondido and Temecula, the Escondido Chamber of Commerce, the Governor’s Drought Task Force which held hearings in Valley Center, and the Philanthropic Education Organization. I was also very pleased to attend and speak at the San Marcos Veterans Day celebration in

Folk Hero, Congressman and Revolutionary

David "Davy" Crockett, born Aug. 17, 1786, was a 19th-century American folk hero, frontiersman, soldier, and politician. He is commonly referred to in popular culture as "King of the Wild Frontier."

Crockett has gone down in American history in almost mythical terms. In his frontier Tennessee, he was a noted leader and hunter – and probably did kill a bear, but no doubt was older than 3. He represented Tennessee in the U.S. House of Representatives, served in the Texas Revolution, and died at the Battle of the Alamo. He became famous in his own lifetime for larger-than-life

The Worst Gift This Holiday Season

On a recent holiday shopping trip, amidst all of the holiday décor and fabulous sales, I was taken aback by one product I continued to see -- electronic cigarettes. From mall kiosks and local convenience stores to gift shops and grocery stores, these products were everywhere.

Our youth are constantly being exposed to the marketing tactics of the tobacco industry. More and more teens will walk past brightly colored vape pens, candy flavored e-juice, and inexpensive e-hookahs endorsed by celebrities and offered at discounted prices. Over the last 25 years, great progress has been made in California in regards to reducing youth smoking rates and preventing the tobacco industry from marketing its products to kids. Unfortunately, the tobacco industry strikes again. Teen use of e-cigarettes has

‘Letters to the Editor’ Cont. on Page 11

exploits popularized by stage plays and almanacs. After his death, he continued to be credited with acts of mythical proportion. Over the year, TV and movies have made Crockett one of the best-known American folk heroes of all time.

Crockett grew up in eastern Tennessee where he gained a reputation for hunting and storytelling. After being made a colonel in the Lawrence County militia, he was elected to the Tennessee state legislature in 1821. In 1825, Crockett was elected, defeated, reelected and then defeated again to the U.S. Congress. He vehemently opposed many of the policies of President Andrew Jackson, most notably the Indian Removal Act. When he lost again in 1835, prompting his famous angry outburst on the floor of the House: “You can all go to hell – I’ll go to Texas!”

There has been much written about Crockett’s life, especially his short-lived time in Texas – some true, some fiction. All that is certain about the fate of David Crockett is he died fighting at the Alamo on the morning of March 6, 1836, at age 49. Crockett arrived in Nacogdoches, Texas, in early January 1836. On Jan. 14, 1836, Crockett and 65 other men from the United States signed an oath to the Provisional Government of Texas for a six-month period. Each man was promised about 4,600 acres of land as payment. It is unclear whether Crockett went to Texas for adventure or for a new start for his family. On Feb. 6, Crockett rode into San Antonio de Bexar and camped just outside the town. They were later greeted by James Bowie. Crockett arrived at the Alamo mission on Feb. 8. On Feb. 23, a large Mexican army led by Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna arrived outside the gates of the old mission. The Mexican soldiers immediately initiated a siege. Santa Anna ordered his artillery to keep up a near-constant bombardment. The guns were moved closer to the Alamo each day, increasing their effectiveness. Crockett and many of the men he arrived with were armed with Kentucky long rifles, which were highly effective at long distances. These were extremely helpful in keeping the Mexican troops at a distance. Weeks after the battle, stories began to circulate that Crockett was among those who surrendered and were executed. However, a former American slave who was a cook for one of Santa Anna's officers, maintained Crockett's body was found in the barracks surrounded by "no less than 16 dead

grand council was held, wherein certain principles of action were deliberated and adjusted. On the death of a chief all his plans die with him, and it devolves upon his successor to come to an understanding with his confederate head chief. In this deliberation it is determined upon what rules the villages shall move, which direction each shall take, and what shall be the relations existing between them. There is generally a harmony preserved between the chiefs, and much method is shown in the preliminary adjustment of details. Long Hair and myself were the best of friends, and my allied brother was the elect to the office of Sixth Counselor, so that there was a promising indication of unanimity in our administration. The villages then separated, with an understanding that they should again assemble at the fort in one moon. The attention of the nation was turned to trapping and killing buffalo, and the stock of accumulated peltry that fall was prodigious. When I started on my excursion to the As-ne-boines, Pine Leaf begged to accompany me. Her arm was far from sound, and I refused to take her. However, soon after I had left, one of my leaders invaded the Cheyenne country, and, regardless of my wishes, she accompanied the expedition. She was brought home, as all supposed, mortally wounded. A ball had penetrated her left breast,

just escaping the heart; it had passed through her body, coming out at the shoulder-blade, and tearing away a portion of it in its exit. On seeing her in this pitiable condition, I resigned all hope of her recovery. "So much," said I, "for disregarding my counsel. I would not allow you to go with me, in consideration of your wound; but you took advantage of my absence, and now you are done for." "Well," she replied, "I am sorry that I did not listen to my chief; but I gained two coups."

The party accompanying her lost four warriors, wounded in rescuing her, and saving her scalp. She eventually recovered, but it was a long while before she could again go to war. The Cheyennes were defeated in the end, with the loss of three scalps, which were brought into camp. The two villages met at the time appointed at the fort, and disposed of all their peltry. A Mr. Tulleck was sent up as clerk, and to him I intrusted full charge of the fort, promising him the protection of the Crows for the winter, as I intended that one of our villages should take up their winter quarters in his vicinity. I was at this time salaried by the American Fur Company at three thousand dollars per annum, to reside with the Crows and procure their trade for the company. Our whole nation then crossed the Yellow Stone, and moved on to Mussel Shell River, whence we purposed to go and gather the remains of our late head chief, as

the time he had specified for their removal had arrived. The Indians count four seasons in the year; namely, green grass, yellow grass, leaf falling, and snow falling. Our party destined to collect the bones consisted of seven or eight hundred persons of both sexes. On arriving at the grave, we discovered a new Indian trail passing directly over the spot, and we started in immediate pursuit. After a march of six miles, we came upon a Black Foot village of twenty-seven lodges, who were returning from the trading-post, having made extensive purchases. At sight of them, every warrior's breast kindled with revenge, they remembering the fall of their chief. We charged furiously upon them, killing and taking prisoners about one hundred and fifty of their party. While the warriors were engaged in the attack, our women attacked the Black Foot women, and killed many of them and their children before we could interfere to stop it. We captured quite a number of young women and little boys, with an abundance of horses, weapons, ammunition, scarlet cloth, beads, and sundries. We did not receive a scratch, as we attacked them with such overwhelming numbers that they offered trifling resistance, their chief endeavor being to save themselves by flight. We took up the body of our chief and returned with it to the camp. Then there was another ceremony of cutting and maiming, and a body of two hundred lodges was sent to deposit the remains in the burial-ground of the chief's ancestors. While this party were away on their mission, those who

remained with us busied themselves in collecting the various sorts of fruit with which the country abounded.

I now received my last name — for I was on the pinnacle of my fame, and they could ennoble me no farther — Nan-kup-bah-pah (Medicine Calf).

After tarrying about three weeks, we returned to the fort, where we again spent a short time, and then proceeded to the Big Horn, where we had engaged to meet Bear's Tooth, who had the conduct of the burial party. While we were resting at the fort, a small party of twenty-three warriors, led by Little Gray Bull, stole from our camp at night, unknown to the chiefs, and when at a safe distance sent us word that they were going to the Cheyenne country in pursuit of spoils. They were the élite of our party, the braves des braves. Not one of that devoted band ever returned. What fate befell them remains to be shown.

It’s easy for me to take for granted what a good job God has done in my life. Often, I just overlook His benefits. The holidays are a good time to pause and appreciate soooo many things. Here are a few that come to mind today. I am… • Thankful for a wife who loves me and for my children and their children who bring me joy. • Thankful for life itself and

good health and daily provision. • Thankful for the amazing people in my life. • Thankful for grace for the journey and mercy each day. • Thankful for knowing my sins (which are many) are forgiven. • Thankful for opportunities to minister to those God places in my path. • Thankful for the community I live in and the opportunity to minister to Mission 316. Gratitude stops my anxiety in its tracks. It makes what I have sufficient and allows me to experience contentment. No wonder God says “in all things give thanks.” Today, I apologize for all the complaining. One more thing … I sense gratitude brings God joy when he sees us pausing to say thanks and appreciative of His gifts. What are you grateful for? How do you show it? ____________________________

One of the ways to show thankfulness to God is in worship this Christmas season. If you don’t have a church home, we welcome you with open arms at Mission 316 Church. We meet Sundays at 10 AM at the San Marcos Community Center at 3 Civic Center Drive in San Marcos. We will be thankful to see you!A SPECIAL COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE will be held at 6 PM at the same location!

Mexican soldiers," with Crockett's knife buried in one of them.

Historians disagree on which story is accurate. It is believed many stories, such as the surrender and execution of Crockett, were created and spread in order to discredit Santa Anna and add to the Mexican leader’s role as villain. There were stories of Crockett surviving the Alamo, but nothing in the archives of the Mexican or Texas governments, nor any of the personal records among the non-combatant survivors validate that claim.

Ask any Texan with knowledge of their state’s history and the answer will probably be that Davy Crockett died a fighting hero defending the Alamo. Whether he was executed as a prisoner or died in battle is of no matter – he definitely was a true hero.

skyrocketed-nearly 9 percent of 8th graders and 16 percent of 10th grades in California use e-cigarettes regularly.1 We are seeing vape shops on almost every corner, even at malls where kids and teens hangout with their friends.

To combat youth access, more than 100 cities and counties in California have adopted a local tobacco retail licensing (TRL) ordinance, including four cities in San Diego. As a parent shopping for gifts for my family this holiday season, I was shocked and saddened to see these harmful products marketed so heavily. It is illegal under CA State Law to sell these products to minors, however many youth are able to access these products. A TRL ordinance will require all retailers to act responsibly, creating a safer retail environment and protecting our youth. /s/Gena Knutson, Concerned Parent and Resident of Escondido, CA

and they seamlessly switch their attention to the activities at hand.” “The residents were able to watch me paint the murals for three weeks. Seeing the work in progress added more meaning for them and brought forth conversation between the residents, many of them newcomers.” “From prior research I discovered murals serve many functions. They can stimulate conversation or illustrate subject matter to educate people in a playful visual way. They can be designed either to relax people or have an energizing effect. Hospitals are using murals to shorten recovery time for patients. If a room cannot contain lush plants, a soothing fountain or a real ocean view, then a mural can create similar benefits— relaxation to assist the immune system,” said Linda. Linda, a Carlsbad resident, gives group and private art lessons. Learn more about her work at www.LindaLuisi.com, or call 760.944.8991. Have an item for the Social Butterfly? 21st from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm. Mr. Nave is a volunteer teacher with years of computer experience. He will teach you how to navigate the internet, how to create an email address and how to send and receive emails. You will also learn about different programs and how the “brain” of the computer works. Mike is a very popular teacher so I recommend that you register early as the class is sure to fill up quickly.

Sign up is mandatory. For more information about this and other Library sponsored events, please visit www.oceansidepubliclibrary.org or call 760-435-5600. Win10 Upgrade Issues ...

Yep, Win10 upgrades have replaced “malware” attacks as the #1 reason folks bring us their PCs to get fixed. Microsoft is having “teething” problems with its newest operating system. Updates (automatic and no longer optional) are causing serious problems for “early adopters” (folks who buy or upgrade in the first six months after the release of a new OS). Microsoft has had to pull back on updates after millions of new PC buyers experienced compatibility issues.

The problems that Win10 is causing for new system buyers are nothing compared to the problems experienced by users attempting to upgrade to Win10 from Win7 or 8. The upgrade problems are a result of Microsoft’s obsessive drive to convert the entire universe to Win10. Win10 is key to Microsoft’s plan to migrate its main revenue stream from the sale of OS for PCs (whose sales

Obituary

Linda Marie Schwebke

Linda Marie Schwebke slipped away to our Lord's loving arms at 9:10 pm on Sunday, Nov 1, 2015, at the end of a long battle with cancer.

Born in Passaic, NJ, Dec 2 1950, Linda was the second child of Walter Joseph and Loretta Marie Skolic. Her older brother is Walter Joseph Jr.

Childhood health issues may have sparked her later career choice in nursing but were the reason for leaving NJ for Phoenix AZ to live with her aunt and uncle during her senior year of high school. Graduating in 1968, she moved to Tucson to attend Arizona State University where she

Microsoft is anxious to make Win10 a success for yet another reason. Corporate/commercial PC sales were not affected by the introduction of the widely despised Win8 OS because Microsoft continued to offer them Win7 Pro. Retail customers were not so lucky. Microsoft made retail versions of Win7 unavailable following the introduction of Win8 and as a result, retail PC sales plummeted nearly 25% between 2012 and 2015. A successful introduction of Win10 would bring back retail sales and enhance Microsoft revenues through increased sales of Win10 OS licenses to PC manufacturers.

In order to create a “Bandwagon effect” for Win10, Microsoft offered an unprecedented free upgrade to all Win7 and Win8 users. In their eagerness to create demand for the new OS, Microsoft played a little fast and loose with the truth. As a result good folks today are spending a lot of money to fix the havoc created by Microsoft’s sins of omission. The problem is not what Microsoft told users, it’s what they didn’t tell them. They didn’t tell users that installing Win10 as an upgrade over a corrupt or virus infected OS could cause unrecoverable problems. They didn’t tell users that even a “clean” installation of Win10 might not have the proper software “drivers” for important components like video and sound etc. Win10 would install lower

earned a BS in marketing in 1973. After a year in Osorno, Chile, with the Peace Corps, she returned to ASU, finishing nursing school in 1979. Her college years were filled with friends and outdoor activitieshiking, skiing and horseback riding which became a lifelong passion.

Leaving Tucson for California, she worked as a RN at hospitals in San Diego and Escondido. A back injury earned helping a falling patient put her on disability for several years and haunted her the rest of her life. In 1983 Linda moved to Ketchikan, Alaska, with husband Dwight Schwebke where their first son, Cody, was born in 1984. After moving to Juneau in 1986, son Daniel soon followed in 1987.

For 16 years Linda found rewarding work in Southeast Alaskan native clinics as a triage nurse and infection control educator. The family returned to Southern California in 1999, where Linda worked in Rancho Bernardo at Examinetics and later in the infection control dept. at Tri-City Hospital. She worked there until her diagnosis with cancer in 2008.

function “generic” device drivers that leave your PC running far below it optimal performance but you would have no way of knowing why. There is also the nagging question as to whether your old files might still have a malware time bomb lurking about after either a clean or dirty upgrade.

Millions of folks have successfully upgraded their Win7 and Win8 PCs to Win10. Other millions have had serious problems. It’s a “do-it-yourself crapshoot.” Is it worth taking the chance? Our answer is that since there is little or no benefit in upgrading from Win7 to Win10, why take a chance? On the other hand, if you have Win8 and hate it, an upgrade to Win10 (which is pretty much identical to Win7) may make perfect sense.

Most important in her life was her family, especially her 2 grandkids, though she also loved horseback riding and tending her backyard garden. Linda enjoyed murder mysteries, western dancing, and travel, having taken trips to Japan, Taiwan, the UK and France. She was planning a family vacation to Hawaii when she passed away. Linda is survived by her husband Dwight, sons Cody and Daniel, grandchildren Harvey and Olivia, and brother Walter of Tucson, AZ.

Prosecutors said it was the defendant who recommended that he and his wife attend counseling.

After the session on June 6, at a business complex on Business Park Avenue and Old Grove Road, Tressa was preparing to get into the passenger seat of their car when her husband went to the trunk, took out a shotgun and shot her, Deputy District Attorney Julie Lynn has said. Witnesses told police he then shot her twice more as she lay on the ground. Green then drove to the San

If you decide on the do-it-yourself upgrade, whether clean or dirty, be sure to back up your files to an external device before you start. Last week we had two instances where users attempted the Win10 upgrade without an external back-up. The Win10 upgrade disrupted file structures and data recovery was lengthy and expensive.

At The Computer Factory the “free” upgrade to Win10 will cost users between $90 and $150 depending on whether we are required to save and/or cleanup your old files. If you try it yourself and blow it, the cost is about the same to fix it, so feel free to give it a shot. The only thing you’ll lose is time. (Be sure to check our Refurberville Ad below!)

Ysidro border crossing, where he walked across the border into Mexico. The next day, hikers at a park near Clairemont found a shotgun that police said belonged to Green. His silver Corvette was found parked at the border. San Diego police detectives tracked him to Cancun, and he surrendered to U.S. authorities at the San Ysidro crossing days later. Green said in court that his heart was filled with guilt and sorrow over what he had done. He said he came back from Cancun because of his children.

“Tressa was the love of my life and our children are blessings... ,” he said in a soft voice. “I’m deeply sorry for the sin I have committed.” Suspected Wedding Thief in Jail

The woman authorities say stole the wallets of brides in San Diego and Riverside counties as they said their marriage vows has turned up in a Nevada jail.

Police in both counties had been looking for Denise Gunderson, also known as Denise Burns, after they identified her as the suspect in a string of thefts during weddings. In November, a San Diego judge issued a $100,000 warrant for the arrest of the career crimi-

Authorities said Gunderson would dress up as a wedding guest and then would slip into crowded venues, where she rifled through purses and sneaked out with credit cards, cash and checks belonging to members of the bridal party. The thefts seem to happen during the ceremony, when the purses are left unattended.

On Sunday, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police arrested Gunderson, 50, after she was reportedly caught trying to steal a wallet at a Romanian Orthodox church. While talking to police, Burns initially provided a false name. On further questioning, she gave the officer a second name and was then arrested for providing false identification.

Riverside County Sheriff’s Detective R. Holder got an anonymous tip that Gunderson had been arrested. He placed a quick call to Las Vegas police. “She was literally hours away from being released,” Holder said Wednesday. “I asked them please don’t let her go.”

A fugitive warrant has been issued for her and it is expected she will soon be a guest of either the Riverside or San Diego County jail system. It will be several weeks before extradition.

Escondido, CA—In a 2002 issue of Neurosurgical Focus, a peerreviewed article was published by a Dr. Michael D. Martin, MD et al. in which the third sentence states: “The disc itself is active tissue that contains significant mechanisms for self-repair.” That article was published by a neurosurgeon and written directly for neurosurgeons.

“The Disc Itself Is Active Tissue...”

So what does that really mean to us? It tells us that the disc itself does have a God-given ability to heal and repair if provided the proper mechanisms for self-healing. There is a specific mechanism inherent in each of the spinal discs called the “pump mechanism of disc nutri-tion” (see Fig 1). When this mechanism is not working properly, the spinal discs will begin to die causing bulges, herniations, and eventually spinal stenosis.

The spinal disc is one of the very few tissues in the body that does not have a direct blood supply for circulation. The only way that the disc gets the circulation of water, oxygen and nutrients for self-repair is via this specific disc pump mechanism. What happens when you decrease cir-culation in any type of tissue, whether it be animal tissue, plant tissue or human tissue? Exactly, it begins to become weak and begins to degenerate.

Symptoms Are NOT The Problem

Now the symptoms of pain, numbness,

brown leaves are the plant’s problem? Of course not, the leaves turning brown is just a condition that is telling you that there is something wrong with the plant. The plant is unhealthy and needs water and nutrients. You could spray paint the leaves green but it just covers up the condition. The underlying problem still exists and will continue to produce brown leaves until you fix the actual problem. and tingling that most experience with bulging, herniated or degenerative discs are NOT the problem. The definition of a symptom: “something that indicates the existence of something else.” It is just like the dashboard of your car telling you that something is wrong (brake lights out, engine needs checked, overheating, etc.) Those lights that appear in your car dash are NOT the problem. You can remove the lights surgically or put a piece of duct tape over the lights but the problem will NOT be fixed...the problem is still present.

Let’s take a look at a plant for example...if the leaves on a plant begin to turn brown, would you say that the

extent of your disc damage for only $70. This examination will consist of a detailed neurological evaluation, extensive orthopedic testing, and a detailed analysis of the findings of your evaluation. He will sit down with you and go over your condition with you in complete detail. You will know exactly what is causing all your pain (or other symptoms).

In your spine, when the pump mechanism of disc nutrition fails, the disc will begin to de-generate and become weak. This weakness in the disc is what produces the bulging, herniated, and degenerative discs.

The treatment that is provided at Dr. Heilman’s Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido is revolutionary and is specifically designed to artificially re-create the pump mechanism in the discs which allows the spinal discs to heal and repair. The best part of the treatment is that it uses no drugs, no injections, and no surgery. Plus it’s painless and many patients relax and fall asleep while undergoing the treatment. The amount of treatment needed to allow the discs to heal and repair varies from person to person and can only be determined after a detailed neurological and orthopedic evaluation. We do NOT accept everyone for treatment and will let you know if we can accept your case for treatment. Dr. Stephen Heilman, DC at the Spine and Neuropathy Care Center in Escondido, CA will do a spinal disc severity examination to determine the
