Harrison became the first U. S. president to visit San Diego County on April 23, 1891, just about every other U. S. president and foreign dignitary has followed in his wake, putting San Diego’s metropolitan region a “must” place to visit.

To save time and ink, it’s probably more expeditious just to say that most of the world’s historically rich, famous and influential people have, at one time or another, prioritized our southern region on their

“bucket wish list” as “Thee place to be.”

And for plenty good reason.

However, it is an entirely different ball game – with a far more exclusive scorecard -- to list the world’s richest, most powerful, and influential people -- who not only visit, but, actually call San Diego County their home.

11. I voted Democratic because I think that it’s better to pay billions for their oil to people who hate us but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle, spotted owl, gopher or fish.

I was reading an article last night about fathers and sons and memories came flooding back of the time I took my son out for his first drink.

Off we went to our local bar, which is only two blocks from the house.

I got him a Guiness Stout. He didn't like it – so I drank it.

Your Gift to Chloe this Holiday Season From the Humane Society, thanks to support from friends like you, Chloe received a wonderful gift this holiday season: the gift of a second chance. Our humane law enforcement officers found 12-year-old Chloe in her previous owner’s front lawn, too weak and sick to move. She was clearly in desperate need of medical attention. To add to Chloe’s pain, the bed she was lying on had a shard of glass in it.

Fortunately, Chloe’s owners decided that day to sign her over to our care — and her new life began. She was brought to our San Diego Campus where she received the medical attention she needed at our Pilar & Chuck Bahde Center for Shelter Medicine.

Escondido Police Continue to Investiage Fatal Collision

On December 9, 2019 at 7:49 PM, Escondido Police and Escondido Fire responded to a vehicle collision on El Norte Py. west of Fig St.

The following information is based on witness statements as well evidence at the scene. A 29-year-old male was driving a red 2008 Chevrolet Corvette west on El Norte Py at a high rate of speed.

After passing Fig St., the driver lost control of the Corvette and collided with a fire hydrant and tree, causing extensive damage to the Corvette.

Well! The reason this email made my day is that one of "our" kids made it.

Evelyn and I ran Los Caballeros de Aventura (The Gentlemen of Adventure) for six years.

Probably had about 500 kids go through our program during that time . . . most started young and stayed till they were 18.

Adrian (whom we knew best as Junior) was always one of my favorites. We'd go around Saturday morning to collect the kids to take them on a hike and this cute little stinker looked up at me with this smile that was irresistable and say . . . "Mr. Davis . . . can I go along?" Who could say no to such a cute kid with such an engaging smile and personality? Not me. (He was, in fact, not old enough to go, under the rules. Kids had to be at least 10 and have parental permission

Man, Three Children, Escape Burning Van

A man and three children were able to escape from a burning van late Saturday night after the vehicle was rear ended by a suspected drunken driver near Hiway 15 & Via Rancho Pkwy.

The accident occurred at about 11:55 p.m., Saturday, California Highway Patrol Officer Ryan Harrison stated. The van rolled and burst into flames. Video of the scene showed the vehicle engulfed in flames and firefighters working to extinguish the fire. “The van almost immediately caught fire and was pushed over to the right shoulder,” There was a male and three children in it. Luckily, they were able to escape.

His dad beat up his mom regularly; one of the brothers, Lalo, finally had enough and pulled a knife on his dad to defend his mom.

Dad called the cops and Lalo wound up in jail. He's been in trouble ever since, including drugs. Junior always kept his nose clean. Lupita, his baby sister was a quiet, lovely girl, studied hard, and stayed out of trouble.

Junior got a job with a restaurant over in Valley Center, and now, I learn, had been working at Sorrentino's for the past 12 years.

One January 1, 2013, Junior became a business owner and bought Sorrentino's.

Evelyn and I went there for a pizza pie tonight (and an order of spaghetti). As I feared, Junior would not accept payment. I said, "Okay, well, here's a tip then," and laid a $20 bill on the counter.

He wouldn't take that either. We talked over old times, got caught up on the family, and refreshed our friendship.

I told him how proud I was of him and, even though we weren't supposed to have favorites, that he was always one of my favorites and that he had come so far and was now a responsible businessman (with a family, 5, 3, 2 and an

If we did nothing else right in our life, Los Caballeros de Aventura was one of the best things we ever did. We met a lot of kids and helped guide them through some pretty rough patches. I've attended their weddings, I see them on the street, in the grocery stores . . . invariably, they'll come up and introduce their wives and children to us.

I look at Evelyn and say . . . "we did something right."

I'm just feeling very proud and happy tonight.

Unique Holiday Gifts at Museum

So, how did all this begin? The celebrities, the historical figures, the rich and famous, and the scientists who changed our world and lengthened our lifespans – all San Diegans.

CALIFORNIA’S FIRST MILLIONAIRE LIVED IN ESCONDIDO. Many world renown celebrities and historical figures, as well as some of the richest people on the planet, have had close ties and residency here in San Diego County extending back over 130 years, with California’s first millionaire, Samuel Brannan (1819-1889).

Brannan was, hands-down, the richest man in the whole state of California.

He would eventually become a resident of Escondido.

On Thursday, December 12, “Mission to Our Escondido Neighbors” presented an award to José and Erik Monforte, owners of Cocina del Charro restaurant, at their Escondido location of 890 W. Valley Parkway.

The Escondido Community Outstanding Service Award is presented in grateful appreciation for the many years of feeding the homeless each Saturday in Escondido from 2008 to 2019.

Cocina del Charro, Escondido, gets Award: On Thursday, December 12, “Mission to Our Escondido Neighbors” presented an award to José and Erik Monforte, owners of Cocina del Charro restaurant, at their Escondido location of 890 W. Valley Parkway.

The Escondido Community Outstanding Service Award is presented in grateful appreciation for the many years of feeding the homeless each Saturday in Escondido from 2008 to 2019. For over a decade, Cocina del Charro has faithfully prepared a hot meal early each Saturday and through many hands delivered the food to those less fortunate in our community.

Many of the homeless will recognize the smiling faces and genuine hearts of those who participated with Cocina del Charro to be a blessing as they pass out hot meals.

The Future of Water

With the recent heavy rains, our water supply may not be at the top of everyone’s worry list. Even so, last week the San Diego County Water Authority gave an update on the future of water in our region.

The County Water Authority was created by the Legislature in 1944.

Its 24 member agencies provide about 75% of our water and serve 3.3 million people. But only 17% of our water comes from local supplies, which include the nation’s largest desalination plant at Carlsbad.11% originates in Northern California, and 72% from the Colorado River. This includes a water transfer agreement with the Imperial Irrigation District that supplies about 35% of our water.

We’ve spent billions on raising local dams, on lining the Coachella and All American Canals to eliminate seepage, on construction of the Carlsbad desalination plant, and on many other projects aimed at diversification and increased supply.

While supplies are adequate for today, steps will be necessary to secure our water future.

The County Water Authority does not have a pipeline that connects directly to the Colorado River – we have to pay the Metropolitan Water District (MWD) for those deliveries, which is costly and has led to

litigation. Several alternative conveyance systems are now under review. Two alignments, one along the Mexican border and another further north, would both end at the San Vicente Reservoir. A third through the Borrego area would end at the Twin Oaks Water Treatment Plant in San Marcos.

Our past diversification efforts were successful. In 1991, 95% of our water was imported from the MWD, but through diversification, only 2% will be imported from MWD by 2035. San Diego’s water future is brighter than many parts of California that haven’t been as innovative, but we can’t rest on our laurels.

Last week, we held our first annual Holiday Open House. It was incredible to see so many constituents from District 5 coming together to celebrate the holiday season.

It’s been a whirlwind first year as a County Supervisor. I’ve learned that it’s much different than being mayor of San Marcos. The County has a vast amount of responsibilities ranging from Health and Human Services to Weights and Measurements. All of which play an important role in making San Diego the best place in the world to live.

As we approach the end of the year, I want to thank everyone I’ve met along the way. While I knew many before becoming Supervisor, I’ve met many new people who have helped me immensely this year. It’s been a big learning curve, but so many wonderful constituents have helped bring me up to speed on issues in our region. I thank each and everyone of you.

As we move forward and look ahead to the new year, I’m excited about what the future holds. I encourage everyone to reach out to

my office if you have any ideas, questions, or concerns. We are here to help in whatever way we can.

The mightiest gathering of human intellect, produced and settled, in one specific location in our solar system – San Diego County.

When Dr. Gerald Edelman received the 1972 Nobel Prize in Stockholm, Sweden, for his research in physiology and medicine, he was “wooed” and “enticed” like a first-round NFL draft choice by every major university in the world from London to Tokyo to America’s Princeton University where Albert Einstein once taught. But Dr. Gerald Edelman, the great Nobel laureate said: “When I went back to my job, guess what?

Everybody on the research team all wanted to go to La Jolla (UCSD).”

It is there, in San Diego County, where the greatest number of minds have changed the world and left the mightiest legacy and the greatest number of Nobel Prize winners in history.

FAMOUS CELEBRITIES SIGHTINGS. Among the movers and shakers of the world, there are also America’s favorite movie and television stars who live among us as fellow-San Diegans.

Many Escondido residents have reported seeing “Ghost Busters” movie legend and Saturday Night Alumnus, Bill Murray, strolling about in various places. Murray, who has appeared in over 65 popular movies (worldwide) from Ghost Busters to Groundhog Day, What About Bob, and Caddyshack, has become an “accepted resident” as he strolls about familiar digs from Elfin Forest to Westfield Shopping Mall to attending special events at Escondido’s Grape Day Park. Likewise, excited crowds have gathered about him at other popular venues, such as at the Escondido’s California Center for the Arts. Murray is “fan friendly” and has been known to patiently sign autographs, even peoples’ arms and hands if paper is not readily available or handy.

Bill Murray is known for his on-and-off stage mischievousness and playful behavior, often reflected in his famous sly grin and twinkling eye.

“Mission to Our Escondido Neighbors” was borne out of volunteering to help serve a Cocina del Charro prepared hot breakfast to our local homeless in Escondido with Keith Sinclair.

Andrew Carnegie is the perfect example of an immigrant building a “rags to riches” estate. He is one of the six leading industrial moguls who was key to the building of America. He was America’s leading steel industrialist turned philanthropist, whose money was distributed throughout the late 1880s and most of the 20th century.

After sitting under the instruction and teaching of Jesus in the scriptures for many years from our pastor, Ted Hamilton at New Life Presbyterian Church in Escondido, my wife, Marcy and I were looking for different ways to give back to help others in our community. Our desire is to show the love of God and His grace that has moved our hearts when we found the forgiveness and acceptance offered in knowing Jesus Christ as our Lord.

While serving a hot meal of breakfast burritos, rice and beans, chips and their famous salsa, we witnessed men and women who were someone’s son or daughter – people like us – receive this food with very grateful hearts and words of thanks.

We could see that to some this might be the only full hot meal they had each week.

Various churches came each week to help Keith serve. These churches also came with such items as clothes or toiletries to pass out to grateful hands. It was a blessing to witness the love of God being shown so freely to help a stranger in need with no strings attached. That is when the Lord spoke to my heart about these people who sometimes live in the shadows and gave me the desire to let them know they are not forgotten.

Thanksgiving and Christmas were almost here, so we decided to do what we could to make a difference in as many lives of the homeless as we could. The love of God compelled us to act when we saw another human in need. Some local churches heard about our project to give care packages to the homeless and donated such things as shampoo, soap, socks, Christmas cards in stamped envelopes to send home, and even sleeping bags for everyone. Walmart in Escondido granted $1000 and supplied shirts and underwear; New Life Presbyterian Church’s deacons granted $1000 to purchase Vons food cards so each could get a hot meal from their deli for Thanksgiving. Truly, many hands came together to donate and give as the Lord moved their hearts for His purpose, and 75 care packages were passed out the Saturday before Thanksgiving.

There will be another care package distribution with backpacks on December 21st, the Saturday before Christmas. The Ladle Ministry from San Diego has donated many items including blankets and tarps for the coming cold weather. We are prayerfully asking the Lord for $10. gift cards to places like Walmart and Target so each can pick out a gift of their choosing.

Because it is a hands-on ministry, the desire of “Mission to Our Escondido Neighbors” is to give necessities to those in need in our community as a witness of God’s love – a love that changes lives.

Carnegie’s name was somewhat tarnished by an event he had little to do with. In 1889, he was one of more than 50 members of the South Fork Fishing and Hunting Club. The club was blamed for the now-infamous Johnstown (Pennsylvania) flood that killed 2,209 people when 20 million tons of water came pounding down from the South Fork Dam. The club had failed to properly reinforce the club-owned dam.

To further blacken Carnegie’s name, in 1892, workers began the Homestead Strike, which was a bloody labor confrontation lasting 143 days. It was one of the most serious work stoppage in U.S. history.

The company refused to raise workers' pay. Carnegie was on a belonged vacation in Scotland during the strike, Company chairman Henry Clay Frick locked out the union. Frick brought in thousands of strikebreakers to work the steel mills, along with 300 Pinkerton agents from New York City and Chicago to safeguard them.

On July 6, a fight broke out in which 10 men -- seven strikers and three Pinkerton agents -were killed and hundreds were injured. Pennsylvania Gov. Robert Pattison ordered two brigades of state militia to the strike site.

Afterwards, the company successfully resumed operations, Carnegie returned to the United States, but his reputation was permanently damaged by the Homestead events.

Carnegie, (pronounced Car-NAY-Gee), was born into a poor family Nov. 25, 1835, in Dunfermine, Scotland. In 1848, at age 12, he emigrated to America with his parents, starting work as a teen-ager becoming one of the richest man in the history of the world.

Carnegie's uncle, George Lauder, Sr., a Scottish political leader, deeply influenced young Andrew by introducing the writings of Robert Burns and historical Scottish heroes such as Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, and Rob Roy. Lauder's son, George Lauder, Jr., grew up with Carnegie and would become his business partner. This early introduction to literature began a lifelong passion of Carnegie, which would later lead to the establishment of libraries throughout the English-speaking world.

In America, Carnegie began as a telegrapher and built a fortune that ended up with some $490 million (14.1 billion in 2019 dollars).

Carnegie’s wealth primarily was important to the building of America beginning with his early investments in railroads, railroad sleeping cars, bridges, and oil derricks. He created Pittsburgh's Carnegie Steel Company (today known as U.S. Steel).

One of Carnegie’s two great industrial innovations was in the cheap and efficient mass production of steel by adopting and adapting the “Bessemer” process of turning iron into steel.

Carnegie’s second road to wealth was in his vertical integration of all suppliers of raw materials. By the late 1880s, Carnegie Steel was the world’s largest manufacturer of pig iron, and steel railroad rails producing approximately

In 1901, Carnegie sold all of his holding to fellow mogul and financier J.P. Morgan, another mogul who helped build America. The 1901, buyout was the largest such industrial takeover in U.S. history. The holdings were incorporated into what became known as the United States Steel Corporation, a trust organized by Morgan. Carnegie’s steel enterprises were bought out at a dollar figure equivalent to 12 times the company’s annual earnings. Among his many philanthropic efforts, the establishment of more than 3,000 public libraries throughout the United States, Britain, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, South Africa, India, and other Englishspeaking countries. Significantly, the first Carnegie library opened in 1883 in Dunfermline, Scotland, his birthplace.

Over the years as interest continue to build his estate, a total of some $350 million (about 90 percent of his wealth) went to fund various charities, foundations, and universities throughout the United States and the British Empire.

Carnegie is also remembered for his special emphasis promoting world peace, education, and scientific research.

Carnegie died on Aug. 11, 1919, at his estate in Lenox, Mass. From his vast fortune, Carnegie is buried in Sleepy Hollow, only a few yards away from union organizer Samuel Gompers, another important industrial figure of the late 1880s and early 1900s – a period known as the Gilded Age.

Speaking of Christmas…

Holidays are a great time for lots of reasons. Things like time off, getting gifts, office parties and bonuses are all great. They are just not the real purpose…right?

Christmas comes with it’s hassles too. Tedious family events, crowded freeways and stressful shopping.

Add to it, for some, lots of loneliness and some might want to skip it altogether.

Reading the Bible reminds us of the real reason of the season. When sin entered the world, a need for a Savior came with it.

It’s pretty clear that this season goes beyond special church services, family gatherings and time off work.

Its not just the fact that Jesus came, but why He came. He came to rescue us from sin. God extended His mercy for us by sending Jesus…

What do you think of when you think of a homeless person?

Someone who is down on their luck, drug addicted, too young to make enough money to pay for a room, an unwed mother, escaping spousal abuse or human trafficking, in a severe depression, mentally ill. Well you would be right. There are a lot of different reasons someone or even families end up on the street. No one likes to see it and many just want it to go away. Well it won’t, and we have to do something about it.

The two north county supervisors – Gaspar and Desmond have taken it on for this part of the county. It’s a complex problem and there is no easy or immediate fix. Solutions potentially will have unintended consequences and so everything we do needs good analysis. And of course, there isn’t enough money. Over the next few weeks I will discuss some of the actions we are taking and some of the progress that has been made. Right now, there are approximately 1540 Homeless across the north county cities from Encinitas to Escondido. About 1000 of those are unsheltered. More to follow…

Smoother Drive for Motorists

The City of Vista is investing $3.5 million to ensure residents have a safe and smooth drive and that the roads are well-maintained. This is part of the City’s commitment to keeping streets in a safe and functional condition for motorists and cyclists. The street of maintenance is scheduled regularly to keep the roads in good condition. Maintaining city streets in a timely manner saves significant future, and often more expensive, costs. During the next few months, the biennial street rehabilitation project will cover over six miles of street reconstruction and overlay across 36 city streets.

Additionally, a new traffic signal is being installed at the intersection of Bobier and Goodwin Drive. The signal will increase safety along this busy road. Both projects are anticipated to be completed in spring, 2020. For more information on street projects, contact the Engineering Department at 760.639.6111.

Oceanside • Mayor Peter Weiss Art That Excites Program

Oceanside is pleased to announce the third public art mural of the Art That Excites program. Don Myers, known locally for his stained glass and mosaic art, will create a 12-by-13foot glass mosaic mural of a community of local sea life as it resides below the surface of the ocean just off our beaches.

The mural will depict a variety of marine animals and plants, including starfish, tuna, sea grass, clown fish, jack mackerel, sea anemone, sharks and coral.

Myers, whose art appears at locations throughout Oceanside, brings 37 years of glass artistry experience to this project. Myers is known for his visionary designs, professionalism and love of teaching and inspiring others.

The Art that Excites program aims to install 10 curated public art murals to transform Downtown Oceanside into a public art destination, to provide art education and community outreach, and to help define Oceanside as a community whose identity is built upon and driven by the arts.

Twas the night before Christmas

OK, maybe it isn’t the night before Christmas but it is the week before Christmas and this will be our last column in 2019.

There are some things we need to tell you about. The first thing is that since Nome never throws anything away that looks like it might be the least bit useful some day, we have tons of boxes of all sizes. If you need some for gift wrapping or moving or storing come and git em.

But these words do not appear in the Bible, which means that the very first Christmas gifts were NOT wrapped. This is because the people giving those gifts had two important characteristics: 1. They were wise.

2. They were men.

Men are not big gift wrappers. Men do not understand the point of putting paper on a gift just so somebody else can tear it off. This is not just my opinion; this is a scientific fact based on a statistical survey of two guys I know.

One is Rob, who said the only time he ever wraps a gift is "if it's such a poor gift that I don't want to be there when the person opens it."

The other is Gene, who told me he does wrap gifts, but as a matter of principle never takes more than 15 seconds per gift.

"No one ever had to wonder which presents daddy wrapped at Christmas," Gene said. "They were the ones that looked like enormous

I also wrap gifts, but because of some defect in my motor skills, I can never completely wrap them. I can take a gift the size of a deck of cards and put it the exact center of a piece of wrapping paper the size of a regulation volleyball court, but when I am done folding and taping, you can still see a sector of the gift peeking out. (Sometimes I camouflage this sector with a marking pen.)

If I had been an ancient Egyptian in the field of mummies, the lower half of the Pharaoh's body would be covered only by Scotch tape. On the other hand, if you give my wife a 12-inch square of wrapping paper, she can wrap a C-130 cargo plane.

My wife, like many women, actually likes wrapping things. If she gives you a gift that requires batteries, she wraps the batteries separately, which to me is very close to being a symptom of mental illness.

If it were possible, my wife would wrap each individual volt. My point is that gift-wrapping is one of those skills like having babies that come more naturally to women than to men. That is why today I am presenting: GIFT-WRAPPING MEN:
