She is, without question, the most famous teenager in world history. Whether one subscribes to Biblical Scriptures or not, regardless if one is atheist or believer, most citizens on planet Earth, have heard of Mary of Nazareth and the alleged supernatural claims connecting her to the Christian Messiah (derived from the Hebrew word, Mashiach or Moshiach, meaning “Anointed One”). Mary’s life is one of such fantastic claims and events that they, collectively, stagger the human imagination to the point of contention. As one source exclaims, “Without any special instructions from God, this illiterate teenage girl raised a son who changed the world.” (Mary of Nazareth, A Mother’s Life, A&E Video, 1995) Professor Paul L. Maier, Ph.D. from Western Michigan University, puts it all into a more isolated and deeplyhuman perspective of a frightened 13-year-old girl who struggled, through confusion and fear, to make the most difficult decisions imaginable. As Dr. Maier phrases it, “I think Mary’s role in rearing Jesus must have been the most unique experience that any person on this planet, man or woman, has ever endured or experienced.”
Living in today’s contemporary world wherein we have become somewhat desensitized to the harsh vagaries of life, perhaps it is truly impossible to fully grasp and comprehend the alleged supernatural events which the young teenage Mary faced in an ultra-conservative Jewish world, more than two thousand years ago.
By becoming, inexplicably, pregnant out of wedlock, an act punishable by stoning to death, the terrorized teenage girl suddenly plunged her entire family into a horrifying scandal. For any mother-to-be, the stakes were dangerously high, for in the midst of this sexual maelstrom, not only was Mary’s life now at risk, but also the life of her precious, The Paper - 760.747.7119

What really happened those many centuries ago? Is the virgin birth just a fanciful tale among the many Biblical accounts, many of which seem to stretch the limits of credibility? Did it really happen?
Many
secular scholars deem it another fabrication without credence. One could invoke the late, brilliant astronomer, Carl Sagan’s chant, “Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.” In the final analysis, there seems to be no verifiable proof that such an event, as previ-
ously described, actually occurred. Equally true, there is no actual proof that it did not.
Come with me now, as we travel back into time to explore lesser known facts about history’s most famous teenager and, in so doing, to hopefully uncover new insights and revelations often missing in previous biog-

raphies. As such, this article will not include garden-variety commentaries (such as the Nativity Scene, the Flight Into Egypt, etc.) all of which can be read elsewhere, in great abundance, and of which we are, only, too familiar. The events which gird Mary of Nazareth’s life almost implores us to investigate more deeply because, despite her world renown and though she is celebrated with deep reverence by countless people for more than twenty centuries, she remains shrouded in mystery. Her personal life and eventual death remains, hugely, unknown.
Re-examining ancient texts, and eliciting the opinions of the world’s leading secular and Christian scholars, new light is shone upon this humble Hebrew girl, known as Mary of Nazareth in the New Testament (or Maryam in Aramaic, the dominant spoken language of her people during her lifetime). The language Mary spoke was most certainly Aramaic, an agreement strongly adhered to, across the board, from antiquarian experts and Judeo-Christian pedagogues. She lived the major portion of her life in the north, in Nazareth.

One day God was looking down at earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on... So He called His angels and sent one to earth for a time. When the angel returned, he told God,'Yes, it is bad on earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not.
God thought for a moment and said, 'Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.' So God called another angel and sent her to earth for a time. When the angel returned she went to God and said, 'Yes, it's
The local tongue in that region, as well as the surrounding areas within Galilee, was Aramaic. To this day, Aramaic is still spoken in that area of the Middle East, to the north of Israel and to the south of Syria. In fact, Aramaic was the so-called ‘mother tongue’ of the Galilee area, during her time. Even the sacred Jewish book, the Talmud, has not changed its language in thousands of years – it is still written, today, totally in Aramaic, and not in Hebrew. (Aramaic, incidentally, is not a dialect of Hebrew, as some may think.) Mary, of course, spoke Hebrew, the ancient language of which the Jewish Torah (the first five books of the Christian Old Testament) is written. And of course, she was given a Hebrew name at birth, Miryam. The names of Mary’s father and mother are never mentioned in the Christian Bible.
However, the second century Gospel of James, a non-canonical text, is the first ancient source to enumerate her parents by name: her father, Joachim, and her mother, Anne. Even though this is an apocryphal manuscript not included in the New Testament,
true. The earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good...' God was not pleased.
So He decided to e-mail the 5% who were good, because he wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going.
Do you know what the e-mail said? Okay, I was just wondering, because I didn't get one either. WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS?
A drunk man who smelled of beer sat down on a subway next to a priest.
The man's tie was stained, his face was plastered with red lipstick, and a half-empty bottle of gin was sticking out of his torn coat pocket. He opened his newspaper and began reading.
After a few minutes the man turned to the priest and asked, "Say Father, what causes arthritis?"
The priest replies, "My Son, it's caused by loose living, being with cheap, wicked women, too much alcohol, contempt for your fellow man, sleeping around with prostitutes and lack of a bath."
many contemporary Bible scholars now grant veracity to this particular parental claim. MARY’S EARLY YEARS
Nothing is known, outside of Scripture, of Mary’s early, formative years. Primarily, because there is no mention of it in the New Testament Bible.
However, historians (both Christian and secular) are comfortable in their assessments of what her life may have been like, in ancient Jewish times. She is assessed to be of Jewish peasantry. In general, times were harsh, particularly for the Jewish lower classes. Throughout her lifetime, the Holy Land was under the cruel control of the vast Roman Empire.
Little is known of the number of inhabitants in the village of Nazareth during Mary’s time. However, archeologists and hard science seem to suggest that her village population at the time was somewhere between 70 to 150. Nevertheless, this estimate is unproven.
Like her surrounding neighbors, Mary’s parents most likely labored long hours in the fields, turning the soil, to earn
The drunk muttered in response, "Well, I'll be,” then returned to his paper.
The priest, thinking about what he had said, nudged the man and apologized. "I'm very sorry. I didn't mean to come on so strong. How long have you had arthritis?" The drunk answered, "I don't have it, Father. I was just reading here that the Pope does." MORAL: Make sure you understand the question before offering the answer. Where’s God?
A loving couple had two little boys, ages 8 and 10, who were just terrible kids always getting in trouble. Running out of ideas, they decided to look to the church. They heard that a clergyman in town had been successful in disciplining children in the past, so they called him, and he agreed to give it a shot. He asked to see the boys individually, so the eight-year old was sent to meet with him first. The clergyman sat the boy down and asked him sternly, 'Now where is God?"
The boy made no response, so the clergyman repeated the question ever louder, "Where is God!?'
a modest living. Even as a very small child, Mary probably worked alongside her parents to help out in every way she could. She was also expected to do other tasks. “I imagine that she helped her mother with food preparation, which would have been much more expensive than most of us have ever experienced. If they were farmers, she certainly helped in the planting and harvesting. Perhaps even in preparing things for the market.” (Dr. Beverly R. Gaventa, Ph.D, Princeton Theological Seminary.)
Only the barest of survival skills were afforded Mary as a young peasant girl. In her day she most assuredly learned the rudiments of cooking, farming, and weaving. Most likely, that would have been the extent of young Mary’s education. In the ancient world, any schooling beyond that would have been a rare exception, even a luxury, which most of the peasantry were not granted -- most especially for little girls. Many Biblical historians say Mary of Nazareth, more likely than not, was probably illiterate. “It’s not to definitely say Mary couldn’t read or write. She could have read Scripture

Again the boy made no attempt to answer, so the clergyman raised his voice even more and shook his finger in the boy's face, "WHERE IS GOD!?" The boy suddenly ran out of the room, ran directly home, and slammed himself in his closet. His older brother followed him into the closet and said, "What happened?" The younger brother replied, 'We are in a BIG mess of trouble this time. God has gone missing and they think WE did it!" First Christmas Joke of 2013:

on her own, but it is highly unlikely. On the other hand, her memory was probably better than ours because she didn’t rely on the written word.” (Professor Beverly R. Gaventa, Ibid)
Most authorities on the Christian Bible agree that Mary of Nazareth was well versed on the Torah (the Christian Old Testament). “Probably in the small town where she grew up there was a synagogue. It doesn’t necessarily mean there was a building, but a crowd of people who gathered together on a regular basis for worship, for prayer and Scriptural reading.” (Professor Beverly R. Gaventa, Ibid.) SHE WAS OF DARK COMPLEXION
Like her son, Yeshua (Jesus), Mary of Nazareth is viewed through prismatic lighting. Both were considered of dark complexion as opposed to the European versions often illustrated through paintings, etc. It is of general consensus among scholars, worldwide, that Mary’s appearance was of the period and time of which she occupied, i.e., she looked more Semitic, not European. This is, virtually, an unchallenged assessment from reputable sources, “I suspect that we do think of Mary as a young Jewish girl, most likely we might think of her with darker hair and Mediterranean features.” (Dr. Christine Athans, Ph.D, University of St. Thomas, St. Paul Seminary.)
The highly regarded Christian authority, the Reverend Billy Graham, states that Jesus was of a “swarthy complexion,” an assessment applicable to Mary, herself, a Jew of antiquity. This would suggest that they had dark features, dark hair, and dark eyes. While it is true that today’s Jews may cover the gamut of blue eyes and alabaster white skin, this was not the case, realistically speaking, in what is now known as the Middle East, over twenty centuries ago.
There may be a contradistinction of good looks and lack thereof, between Mary and her celebrated son, Jesus. In regards to Jesus, if one is to embrace the Christian faith, then we would accept what is found in the Old Testament Bible (also known as the Jewish Torah). In Isaiah 53:2, it plainly states, “He hath no beauty or majesty to attract us to Him, nothing in His appearance that we should desire Him.” According to this Scriptural source, Jesus was neither attractive (or hand-
some). In regards to Mary’s appearance, there is nothing recorded in the New Testament. However, if one were to read first-century manuscripts, Mary of Nazareth was believed to have been exceptionally beautiful. However, these testaments to Mary’s beauty are only found in ancient manuscripts that are excluded from the Christian Bible. As such, they remain unproven to mainstream Christology. THE VIRGIN BIRTH.
Mary of Nazareth is a different reality to different people/cultures.
Even the virgin birth is widely shrouded in mystery. All reputable Christian scholars acknowledge that no precise day, such as December 25, can be exacted as the so-called divine birth date of their Messiah, Jesus. Speculations predicated on fall festivals, shepherds staying in the fields (Luke 2:1-3), the weather pattern, even the period of the Roman census, all have serious flaws and are not given sober consideration from the world’s foremost Christian cognoscenti. Scholars remain steadfast that no one knows the date of Mary’s birth to Jesus.
However, what piques scholarly interests are the possible hidden motives behind the early church father’s selection of December 25 as the date of Mary’s divine birth to Jesus. Was it merely an innocent, arbitrary decision? Or did ancient secrets parlay into the decision? And why are such details of any importance? It is of importance, primarily because accurate historical data is vital in the overall understanding of any culture, religious or otherwise. And secondly, it is highly democratic to give the people what they wish to know. There is a powerful worldwide interest from inquisitive human minds, human minds which no longer wish to be shackled from truth, wherever it may be found. It appears that early Christian zealots in their eagerness to erase popular pagan celebration days, found their efforts far more difficult than anticipated. December 25 was already a popular pagan festival day celebrating the birth of the Sun God of Righteousness. That Christmas was selected specifically on that day may be more than coincidence. The theory that early Church fathers may have thought it

Commentary
The twists and turns of the political landscape get curiouser and curiouser . . . Various political sources tell me that former Escondido Chief of Police, Jim Maher, definitely plans on moving back to Escondido and running for political office, most likely for Mayor, going up against the incumbent, Mayor Sam Abed, as well as a somewhat surprising political ally, Deputy Mayor Olga Diaz.
Maher, it is said, believes Diaz is the only Council member who stood up for him during the backroom negotiations to strip him of his job as Police Chief. She ‘didn’t think it was fair,’ doing to Maher what was being done. Our same reliable sources tell us that Maher does, indeed, have a letter that was drafted for his signature by Escondido’s power brokers, agreeing to restrictions on what he could and couldn’t do within Escondido city limits. So far, he has refused to sign it and until he signs it the city has refused to pay him the remaining $75,000 of his $150,000 settlement which was due July 1, 2013. If true, does that sound like extortion to you? It apparently does to Maher and he doesn’t want to be any part of a conspiracy.
If and when Maher decides to release that letter to the public then the political battlefield changes rather quickly and I can see a groundswell of support for Maher’s political run and a heavy drop in the support for Abed and, in particular, for City Manager Clay Phillips.
We have also learned, from equally reliable sources, that it
was City Attorney Jeff Epp who gave Jim Maher the word that he was not coming back to Escondido as its Chief of Police. This took place at a meeting at Charlie’s Restaurant in Escondido with Maher, Epp, and Dennis Snyder, close personal friend of Mayor Sam Abed. Contrary to other rumors floating around, Snyder was present but he did not give Maher his notice of termination. Epp did. In fact, Snyder told The Paper that he was at that meeting to help Maher ease through the transition, that Maher was already aware of the termination well before Epp reconfirmed it. “We had been long time supporters of Maher,” Snyder said. “We wanted to be of whatever help we could be to him. These rumors that I was involved in his termination are nonsense and, if you talk to Jim, he will confirm that.”
We also hear that Maher has considerable financial backing for such a run. If Abed, Diaz and Maher all three run for Mayor, will the vote be split in such a manner that Abed would be re-elected? If the race were to be between Abed and Diaz, present polls indicated that Diaz would win easily. Will Maher reconsider and run for Council instead of the Mayor’s seat, thus aiding Diaz in her run for the top spot? This could be an interesting election.
Even more difficult to figure out is who the candidates will be in each of the four districts. The district which has the most heavy Latino population is the one in which present Council member Ed Gallo lives. He has declared his intention to run. Question: Will there be any candidate in that district that has the credentials to offer a competitive race for the position? Gallo is, and has been, a close ally of Mayor Sam Abed. Will that hurt him with the Latino vote? He has shown a reluctance to stand up to Abed on key issues. Would he back the constituents in his new district

On Wednesday, December 4th, 2013, following a presentation by Dana Nuesca, Chairperson of the Independent Districting Commission, the Escondido City Council unanimously approved the Commission’s Recommended District Plan, dividing the City of Escondido into four (4) Council districts.
The seven member commission drew the district boundary lines pursuant to the criteria set forth in the Consent Decree in the following order of priority: 1) Districts shall comply with the United State Constitution, including containing reasonably equal population; 2) Districts shall comply with the federal Voting Rights Act; 3) Districts shall be geographically contiguous and drawn to encourage geographic compactness; 4) Districts shall be drawn with respect for geographic integrity of any neighborhood and any community of interest; and 5) The place of residence of any incumbent or political candidate shall not be considered in the drawing of district boundaries.

Answer: There's so many things to write about you never run out of material. You just have to open your mind, read a lot, listen a lot, think a lot. And, lo! The idea for a story begins to blossom . . . and it really doesn't take very long. Other times, inspiration hits you and words seem to form. An idea begins to take shape, first in sentences, then paragraphs, pretty soon, you have the makings of a story. Sometimes the end result is dramatic, comedic, or philosophical. Sometimes just plain silly.
For example, fifties songwriting legends Leiber and Stoller must have said “That’s a hit single,” when the idea for “Poison Ivy” came to mind, the deal unquestionably sealed when the lines “You’re gonna need an ocean – bump ba bump ba bump – of calamine lotion”

Going back to "Poison Ivy," one has to wonder what the inspiration for that song was. It is said that "Poison Ivy" is not about a plant at all but about a young lady with a social disease. Makes sense to me . . . read and absorb the lyrics, and wonder if the young lady in question (theoretically) was an aquaintance of one or both of the authors, and, what torment these two songwriters must have physically gone through to give them the inspiration to find the words to form the lyrics to the song: "Poison Ivy"

The develooper of the controversial housing development has agreed to cut the number of homes from 198 to less than 190. This, he hopes, will placate both the San Marcos Planning Commission and City Council which are scheduled to vote next month on the controversial subdivision known as San Marcos Highlands.
The project is proposed for open space at the city’s northern edge.

From Depression to War
The second World War was the largest and most deadly global military conflict in recorded history. It was the defining seven-year period of the 20th century – certainly the most important event in U.S. history.
The War historically began on Sept. 1, 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, drawing in the Polish allies of the United Kingdom and France. History should never forget that as early as 1937, the Japanese were invading China, killing thousand. What began as a territorial conflict in Eastern Europe spread quickly to
In 1940, Adolf Hitler, the Nazi leader in Germany, had signed a “non-aggression” treaty with the Soviet Union. When Germany invaded Poland from the west, Russia invaded from the east. Then Germany invaded Russia in June 1941. In December 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor, various U.S. bases in the Philippines, Guam, and Wake Island, and then landed a force on Attu, in Alaska’s Aleutian islands. As the War dragged on, Italian forces collapsed, surrendered, then joined the Allies in 1943. On May 8, 1945, Germany surrendered, then Japan gave up on Aug.

more efficacious to supplant pagan worship days by ‘wallpapering’ over them with a Christian day of worship, may hold some elements of credence, as opposed to a random coincidence of both sharing the same December 25. According to New Testament accounts, the birth of Mary’s first-born child occurred in the small village of Bethlehem. Adding to the mystery is the historical fact there was more than one Bethlehem during ancient times. One was situated in Galilee (in the region of Zebulon) bordering the valley of Jiphthah-el in the north, near Nazareth (Joshua 19:1516). The other Bethlehem (of Jesus’ reputed birth), is in the hilly region to the south of Jerusalem, in the vicinity of Judah. In the Jewish Torah (Christian Old Testament), it is first spoken of in Genesis 35:19. It is this Bethlehem, in Judaea (Judah), where religious scholars believe to be the birth place of Mary’s son, Jesus.
Any discourse on Mary of Nazareth’s virgin birth of Jesus carries with it issues of extreme belief and sensitivity. For Christians, it is a requirement of faith. However, the virgin birth is not an exclusive view of the 2.1 billion Christians which populate the earth. The virgin birth is also acknowledged outside the periphery of Christianity. The Islamic faith (second largest only to Christianity) makes clear that Mary of Nazareth gave forth a virgin birth by the command of God (Allah). To state otherwise, would be a grave insult since it would challenge the veracity of the Muslim’s central religious text, the Qu’ran (Koran). However, since the Islamic faith does not subscribe to the Christian belief in a triune God, Muslims believe Mary’s miraculous virgin birth came about through the command of Allah, not that she was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. (The Koran, Translation, Ch. 3, Al-Imran, Verse 40. Simon & Shuster, 1986) It must be pointed out that Muslims do not believe Jesus to be the son of God (Allah). They view him only as an important prophet, a messenger of Allah. The Islamic faith does not subscribe to the belief that Allah had a son.
Furthermore, Muslims believe that Jesus will return to earth near the Day of Judgement to restore justice and to defeat alMasih ad-Dajjal (“the false messiah,” also known to Muslims as the Antichrist). To
reiterate, Muslims reject the Trinitarian Christian view of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost and therefore reject the view that Jesus was God incarnate or the son of God.
It is incumbent for an article such as this to make occasional digression to maintain subject clarity and proper perspective. HOW OLD WAS MARY WHEN BETROTHED?
Scholars believe Mary of Nazareth was as young as 12 or 13 years of age when betrothed to Joseph. She was considered to be 13 to 14 years of age at the time of her alleged ‘virgin birth’ to Jesus. This may seem to be of an early age, but during Mary’s time this was of the norm in ancient times, and was considered of average age according to Jewish custom. One must keep in mind, that two thousand years ago, the average life expectancy was about 40 years of age. This certainly is not to say that some people did not live a lot longer. Some did. However, during the first century, the (average) person did not live beyond the age of fifty, due to harsh living conditions, prevalent diseases, accidents, and warfare. Jesus was said to be about thirty years of age when he began his earthly ministries (Luke 3:1). MARY’S FIRST SON, JESUS.
Mary’s first-born son was never named Jesus, and he was never called that during his lifetime. At birth, he was named Yeshua, a shortened form of Yahoshua or Yahshua. We sometimes forget that Mary, and her son, Jesus (Yeshua) were Jews of antiquity. In the Hebrew language, there does not exist a letter with an equivalency to our AngloAmerican ‘J.’ The letter ‘J’ (sound) may have existed long ago, but not in the ancient Hebrew language.
The English name “Jesus” is the outcome of the Greek word “Iesous” and the Latin version “Iesus.” This Greek and Latin spelling of Jesus – along with the Hebrew spelling – was placed (according to Christian Scripture) on the head of Jesus’ cross, by order of Pontius Pilate, along with the inscription, “This is the King of the Jews.” (Luke 23:38-39, KVJ). This one message was placed in three distinct languages of the day (Greek, Latin, and Hebrew) and each spelled,
‘Mary of Nazareth’ Cont. on Page 9
‘Mary of Nazareth’ Cont. from Page 6
respectively, without the letter ‘J.’
The letter ‘J’ did not exist during the time of Mary and Jesus. Historical records reveal that there was no such letter ‘J’ in the English alphabet until it was first introduced by medieval scribes, centuries later. Even after the introduction of the letter “J” (the last letter to be added to our 26-letter alphabet), it still did not become widely popular until the 17th-century (1600s), centuries after its inception. (Encyclopedia Americana, International Ed., Vol. 15, 2006).
Mary of Nazareth’s selection of the name Yeshua (Jesus’ actual birth name, which means “The Lord is salvation,” or “The Lord will/has saved”) was a popular name during her time. For matters of linguistic convenience, this article will refer to Mary’s son, Yeshua, as “Jesus,” since this application is most commonly accepted today in our Modern English.
All Christian scholars of recognized credentials are fully aware of Jesus’ actual birth name, “Yeshua.” WAS MARY FIRST TO SEE JESUS’ MIRACLES?
Though the New Testament Bible clearly states that Jesus’ first public miracle was at a wedding feast in Cana, most Bible experts subscribe to the belief that Mary had seen or was aware of Jesus’ miraculous powers before his first public miracle at Cana. After all, Mary was aware of his divinity and who he truly was as imparted by angelic intermediaries. Therefore, Bible experts believe it would be supremely naïve to believe Mary had not witnessed earlier miracles by Jesus during his growing-up years. “It must have been phenomenal for her to realize -according to Christian theology here – that she was rearing ‘God becoming man’ – God with us. How do you handle that?” (Professor Paul L. Maier, Ph.D, Western University.) An ancient first-century manuscript may provide a rare glimpse of a young Jesus during one of his earlier miracles. According to an ancient text, a young six-year-old Jesus was sent by his mother, Mary, to fetch water from the village well. The expectant large crowd of people at the well jostled the young Jesus whereupon he dropped his mother’s jar, where it broke into several pieces.
Spreading his thin-clothed shirt upon the ground, the child Messiah, filled it with water and took it home to his mother. According to this ancient legend, Mary saw this miracle, embraced and kissed her sacred child, and kept the secret to herself. (The Gospel of Thomas.)
Since this account resides in what is called a pseudepigraphical text, a fancy word for any manuscript source rejected as being, mostly, unreliable, and therefore, excluded from the Christian Bible, it is not, as a whole, given credence. However, contemporary Bible experts do grant that some apocryphal writings may contain elements of truth and, therefore, are not entirely fictionalized. Perhaps this early story of a young Jesus at the well may contain a hidden truth that time has bypassed for over two thousand years. One thing is for certain, Mary knew beforehand (at the wedding feast in Cana) that her son, Jesus, held miraculous powers. This is evident in that she prodded him to perform his first public miracle of turning water into wine, despite his initial resistance to do so, “Mother, it is not yet my time.” (John 2:1-11) It is surmised that Mary became a widow during Jesus’ teenage years. Bible researchers believe Joseph died during that time, simply because the Bible stopped mentioning him. DID MARY HAVE OTHER CHILDREN?
The New Testament only states that Jesus had four brothers and that he also had sisters (sisters is stated in the plural context, however the exact number of sisters is nowhere cited in the Christian Bible, neither are his sisters named. “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us.” (Matt. 13:55-56, RSV). Also, the Gospel of Mark corroborates this: “Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon and are not his sisters here with us?” In Mathew 13:55-56, RSV, the descriptive word “all” seems excessive in describing two sisters, “And are not all his sisters with us.” It remains an open debate that there may have been more than two sisters. Even so, some non-canonical ancient texts cite two sisters as Anne (named after Mary’s mother), and Lydia. Anything beyond these two names is thought to be without adequate foundation and remains
purely in the realm of conjecture. MARY’S MYSTERIOUS DEATH
Ponderous question marks among scholars and countless millions of religious devotees down through the ages are how Mary of Nazareth met her demise and where? Even the cause and location of the death of her son, Jesus, is better known. That he died by crucifixion at Golgotha and was laid to rest in the burial place of Joseph of Arimathea (mentioned in all four Gospels of the New Testament) is universally accepted. Also, most antiquarian experts cite either the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, Jerusalem, as the locale where Jesus was laid to rest, or the Garden Tomb (discovered in the 19th century) outside of the old city of Jerusalem. In contrast, this is bountiful data compared to the cause and locale of Mary of Nazareth’s death. At one time, the Greek city of Ephesus was mentioned as a possible burial place for Mary because the disciple John (whom Jesus entrusted his mother to when he was dying on the wooden cross), visited there as an old man and, therefore, Mary, might have died there.
However, ancient first-century texts reveal that the aging disciple John arrived at Ephesus, accompanied only by Prohor, and that Mary was conspicuously absent. Biblical researchers believe that Mary had died prior to John’s journey to Ephesus, as John never left her when she was alive, as the dying Jesus requested. Since the New Testament says nothing regarding Mary’s final days, researchers have only questionable apocryphal books of the Bible to refer. Dissecting hidden truth from fiction is a formidable task. However, it is discerned that Mary may have died of old age (perhaps 67) and buried somewhere in Jerusalem (and not Ephesus). One ancient manuscript says Jesus would give instructions to Peter on the burial place of his earthly mother. The ancient writing is translated as giving the burial place at, “The Garden of Gethsemane, outside the walls of Jerusalem, in the Valley of Jeoshaphat, across from the river Chedron.” Though unproven, this would be a fitting place for Mary’s burial place since the Garden of Gethsemane was where her son, Jesus, and his disciples were said to have gathered often, and also the Bible declares it the place where Jesus prayed in anguish the night before his crucifixion. SUMMATION
Even if a Godhead, or Prime
December 12, 2013 - Page 9
Mover, were removed from the equation, it is impossible for humans to imagine, let alone comprehend, how any universe or time and space, could have existed without having had a beginning (for what preceded the so-called ‘beginning’?). This genre of questioning is, ultimately, unanswerable. Today’s accepted science (cosmology) says everything began with the Big Bang theory, perhaps 15 billion years ago. Science says there was an unimaginable cataclysmic explosion from which the universe expanded faster than the speed of light. It is compelling to note that at this precise cosmological moment, there was a blinding light at that moment on inception, when the universe as we know it was born. This cataclysmic light is poignant in that it, perhaps by coincidence, matches what is found in the Jewish Torah (a.k.a The Christian Old Testament Bible) which describes in Genesis 1:3 the beginning of the universe, “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.” Fanciful metaphysics with a theological spin? Perhaps. But, I think not. When all is said and done, I believe what the Hebrews first penned almost twenty-six centuries ago. As well as the tidings inscribed in the two-thousandyear-old Christian New Testament. To me, that is the good news. Frederick Gomez

You will have probably noticed Dan’s ads in The Paper over the past several weeks in which he outlines how, with just a few basic pieces of information, he can determine if you are eligible for huge subsidies to make your monthly/annual premium for healthcare negligible. Well! It appears Mr. Anaya has struck a chord with our readers. The response has been so strong he has had to add extra highly trained insurance experts to process the paperwork and help as many individuals as possible. Yes, you have the government website you can go to . . . but do you really want to work your way through that maze? Throw Out Your PC, the Sky is Falling
“The post PC era has arrived” said Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs in mid 2010. Jobs had already dropped “Computer” from Apple Computers name in 2007. Others in the computer industry agreed. It makes perfect sense. Why have a twenty-pound monster under your desk with a monitor, keyboard and mouse hogging space on your desktop? Why lug a ten-pound notebook through airport security? With the smart phone in your shirt pocket, the PC on your wrist and your applications in “the cloud,” who needs a notebook or desktop PC?
So how’s that going? Are we
Wyland Honors Kareem Abdul-Jabbar at LEGOLAND
Last week, Senator Wyland presented a Senate resolution to California’s After School STEM Ambassador, and NBA legend, Kareem AbdulJabbar at the 15th Annual First LEGO League Championship at LEGOLAND. This annual robotics competition hosts more than 100 student teams from five southern California counties, and each team of students relies on their science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills to participate in team challenges. Competitions like First LEGO League play a key role in promoting STEM education among students, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shares in this effort. He founded the Skyhook Foundation, which facilitates after school mentorship programs for young
there yet? If not, where are we and how did we get here?
In late 2007 notebook PCs passed desktop PCs in unit sales volume. In 2008 the low cost, highly portable 10-inch “netbook” PCs took the industry by storm. By 2010 “netbook” sales peaked at 20% of the notebook market. The obvious take-away from the “netbook” invasion was that many users don’t want or need a full function “computer” for mobile applications. That knowledge opened the door for “tablets.” Cheaper and more portable than notebooks, tablets with wireless Internet access and larger screens than smart phones quickly eclipsed “netbooks.” A tablet is little more than a large screen smart phone that can’t make phone calls. Now smart phones with their improved screens, lower costs and growing “app” libraries are beginning to slow the growth of tablets. Even so, tablets are forecast to equal notebooks in unit volume (200 million) in 2014.
sumer dislike of Windows 8 is making them hang on to their old Windows XP and Vista notebooks or to upgrade them to Windows 7. Desktop sales are down too but not as badly as notebooks. Surging mobile technology had little impact on desktop applications but the Windows 8 revolt is keeping potential business and home PC shoppers out of the retail stores. Worldwide smart phone and tablet sales each grew by 50% in 2013 over 2012 unit volume. In the last half of 2013 it is becoming clear that as cell phone screens get bigger and tablet screens keep getting smaller, cell phone sales are starting to slow tablet sales growth.
2013 PC worldwide sales of PCs (notebooks and desktops) are down 15-20% from the 2012
numbers and stand at about the same unit sales level that they were in 2008. Here at The Computer Factory PC sales are running about 40% higher than any year from 2008 through 2012. Are we bucking a trend or is there a flaw in the “Post PC era” theory?
We believe that while PCs sales represent a much smaller slice of the computing and communication devices pie than they did five years ago, today its a much bigger pie. The need for home and business “workstation” desktop computers has changed little. Smart phones, tablets, notebooks and desktops each have their own niche. Most home and business users have more than one of these devices. Next week we’ll discuss the “niches.”
Since the introduction of Windows 8 five quarters back, notebook sales have been crumbling under assault from three directions. Tablets and smart phones are replacing notebooks in mobile applications and con-
students interested in STEM fields. He has been a strong advocate for STEM education and made significant contributions to STEM programs in California.
I was honored to join the First LEGO League Championship event again this year and to recognize Kareem AbdulJabbar for his mission to increase STEM education opportunities for students.
The skills that students acquire through the Skyhook Foundation and First LEGO League will serve them lifelong, especially with growing job market demand for STEM educated young adults.
Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes Rancho Bernardo, Carlsbad, Oceanside, San Marcos, Escondido, and Vista.

The Bullet Train should be Derailed
In 2008, California’s voters passed Proposition 1A, a $9.95 billion bond measure to help finance a $40 billion high-speed rail system that would connect population centers in Northern and Southern California via the Central Valley.
As is often the case with government projects, costs spiraled. By 2011 the estimated cost of the system increased to over $100 billion. These estimates resulted in a reassessment of the project, and cost projections dropped to $68 billion for a 520-mile line connecting San Francisco to Los Angeles.
Though $705 million of Prop. 1A bonds have already been issued, the project may now be irretrievably stalled as a result of a recent court ruling that rejected the sale of an additional $8 billion. Consequently, the state will
have to redraw plans for the project, a process that could take years.
It is way past time to kill this costly boondoggle. California is struggling with huge infrastructure issues, including the need to upgrade and repair the state’s highway grid and to figure out a way to bring more water to the parched population centers and agricultural regions of Central and Southern California. Wasting scarce financial resources on a train that may never connect San Diego to the rest of California and that comparatively few will ever ride is classic government waste and fiscal mismanagement. The bullet-train should not take precedence over essential projects that will serve all Californians for generations to come.

Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter Holiday Tree Safety
At this time of the year, Vista Fire officials always worry about the dry Santa Ana winds. With high winds and low humidity, the speed of spread and flame length increases greatly. The key is to design a plan for wildfire, prepare your home and surroundings, and practice fire-safe activities. Following are tips to better protect your family and home.
Vista Fire is urging residents to be careful if they are displaying Christmas trees. Even trees treated to be flame-retardant are capable of burning explosively and spreading fire through a home quickly. • Look for freshness with cut trees. The needles should be difficult to pull from the branches and should not break when bent between your

• If purchasing an artificial tree, choose one that is labeled fire resistant. • Cut two inches off the base and immerse the cut end into water immediately and place in a sturdy stand capable of holding a large amount of water. Check the water in the tree stand often. An average tree can consume a quart to a gallon of water • Position the tree away from fireplaces, direct sunlight and other sources of heat that can cause the tree to dry out prematurely or ignite. • Decorate tree safely with UL-approved miniature lights to prevent heat buildup and lessen drying effects. NEVER use real candles on a tree. • Inspect used lights for frayed wires, broken sockets or signs of wear and discard if damaged. • Turn off or unplug tree and exterior lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Holiday Fire Prevention Tips
Fires that occur during the holidays injure about 2,600 people and cause over $930 million in damages annually, nationwide. That’s enough to make anyone stop and pay attention to these important fire prevention safety tips for the holidays:
Candles: Avoid using candles if possible. If you do, ensure candles are kept away from children and anything that could catch fire. Do not leave burning candles unattended. Trees: Select a fresh tree, keeping it no longer than two weeks in a stand filled with water. The trunk should be sticky to the touch. Keep trees
away from heat sources and ensure artificial trees are flame resistant. Dispose of your tree as soon as it becomes dry. Lighting: Only use lighting listed by an approved testing lab. Inspect lights each year for frayed wires, broken or cracked sockets, or excessive kinking. Turn off electricity before working with outdoor wiring. Always unplug holiday lights before leaving or going to sleep. Decorations: Use only flame resistant or nonflammable décor and keep away from heat sources. Never put wrapping paper in a wood-burning stove as it can cause an explosion.
Staying safe this season will make for a holiday season that everyone can enjoy.
Oceanside • Mayor Jim Wood Happy & Safe Holidays
The Oceanside P o l i c e Department (OPD) is dedicated to keeping our streets safe during the holiday season, and all year long, through traffic enforcement and educational programs. Because of its goal to implement measures that would prevent deaths and injuries on Oceanside roadways, OPD was awarded a $219,578 grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety to assist with this objective. This grant will allow OPD to conduct special DUI Checkpoints to assist in the efforts of reducing the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol and
drug related collisions in our community, as well as educating motorists on the dangers of impaired driving via these checkpoints. Drunk and drugged driving are among America’s deadliest crimes. It may not be something that we want to discuss during the holiday season, but when celebrating, we all need to remember our responsibility when we get behind the wheel. In 2011, 774 people were killed and over 24,000 injured in alcohol and drug-impaired crashes in California. Last year, Oceanside experienced 2 fatalities and 66 injuries from such tragic crashes. So please, while celebrating during this wonderful time of year, remember to have Happy & Safe Holidays!

The Redskins
I agree with our Native American population---I am highly insulted by the racially charged name of the Washington Redskins.
One might argue that to name a professional football team after Native Americans would exalt them as warriors, but nay nay.... We must be careful not to offend, and in the spirit of political correctness and courtesy, we must move forward. Let's ditch the Kansas City Chiefs, the Atlanta Braves and the Cleveland Indians. If your shorts are in a wad because of the reference the name Redskins makes to skin color, then we need to get rid of the Cleveland Browns. The Carolina Panthers obviously were named to keep the memory of the militant Blacks from the 60's alive. Gone. Offensive to us white folk.
The New York Yankees offend the Southern population. Do you see a team named for the Confederacy? No! There is no room for any reference to that tragic war between the states that cost this country so many young men's lives. Besides, the South shall rise again! I am also offended by the blatant references to the Catholic religion among our football

14, 1945. The War officially ended on Sept. 2, 1945, with the formal surrender of the Empire of Japan on the deck of the battleship USS Missouri.
Approximately 62 million people died in the war. Most of the casualties were civilians as a result of the largescale Allied aerial bombing of cities, disease, starvation, and Hitler’s Holocaust genocide. It is estimated the Soviet Union, alone, suffered more than 25 million deaths; China lost some 10 million of its citizens.
For the Allied nations of the United Kingdom, France, Poland, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, China, and the United States, some 17 million military and 35 million civilians were killed. For the Axis Powers, 8 million military and 4 million civilians were killed.
The United States had 16 million in uniform services. Many more worked in wartime factories producing planes, guns, tanks, bombs and ammunition. We lost more than 600,000 of our military personnel.
While there are many reasons declared as the causes of World War II, these aspects stand out: nationalistic control of vast geographic regions, and the natural resources those nations possess – namely oil. Japan, Germany, and Italy all needed the natural resources of others to maintain their imperialistic goals.
In Europe, the Treaty of Versailles, which officially ended World War I, with an Allied Powers victory, was perceived by Germany as unjust. Essentially, it stripped that nation of much of its natural resources and burdened it with nearly unsustainable cash payments of its former enemies. This resentment fueled the success of the militarist Nazi Party. The Hitler and the Nazis succeeded beyond their wildest expectations primarily due to the economic conditions created by the world-wide Great Depression of the 1930s. The power the Nazis gained allowed them to re-arm Germany, launching Hitler on his blood-thirsty rampage.
The strength of the United States was forged by the chal-

The developer, 74-year-old Farouk Kubba, has also agreed to help pay for extra lanes at the nearby state Route 78/Las Posas Road freeway interchange and shrink the “footprint” of the project to preserve more open space.
There are a number of residents, however, who are adamantly apposed to the development and they intend on lobbying Planning Commission and Council Members both prior to and during the scheduled meetings. Most of these residents live in Santa Fe Hills, just south of the proposed project.
The commission is scheduled to vote on the development on Jan. 6, and, if approved, the council would consider it Jan. 28. Nearly 500 residents have signed a petition against the project.
The residents argue the new development would destroy a beautiful wildlife area and worsen traffic congestion. They

In addition, the development’s impact on local public schools has created questions as to whether the two school districts, Vista Unified and San Marcos Unified, could cause overcrowding on either or both campuses. BMX Proposal Stumbles
The Escondido Community Services Commission voted Monday evening against allowing the proposed new BMX track in Escondido’s Kit Carson Park.
The final decision remains with the City Council who will hear the proposal early next year. The Commissions vote is only advisory. Vince McCurdy, who has operated BMX tracks in Kearny Mesa and Lakeside for many years, acknowledged he was disappointed in the vote but he hoped to present persuasive arguments to the City Council. The Advisory Panel voted in favor of having a BMX track somewhere in Escondido, but said Kit Carson Park already has too much activity and development.

Pastor Hal Seed New Song Community Church, Oceanside, The Christmas Story was Unexpected
The story of the birth of Jesus Christ is one of the most familiar stories in history.
Jesus was born in Bethlehem. A star shone. Angels sang. Shepherds visited. Wisemen showed up not long after. You know the story. It’s familiar. Warm and fuzzy. Until you stop and thinkabout it.
Christmas was an incredible hardship for Joseph and Mary. Nine months early, they weren’t planning on a baby. They weren’t even married. Or sexually active. They had no plans for an 80 mile
Then there were the shepherds. Minding their own business. Tending their sheep. Angels show up and invite them to visit the newborn Messiah. Unexpected. The Wisemen didn’t expect the baby to be born in Bethlehem. They had to consult the Jewish Elders to find out where Messiah was to be born. Herod wasn’t expecting the birth of a king of the Jews. For all parties involved, Christmas was one of the most unexpected events of their lives.
The only one for whom Christmas was expected was God. He had been planning the birth of his Son for 2,000 years. Jesus’ birth was the most carefully planned event in history, and the most unexpected event of its day. Makes you wonder what God has in mind for you today, doesn’t it?

President Theodore Roosevelt
'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language ... and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.'

team names. Totally inappropriate to have the New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Angels or the San Diego Padres. The fact that there are birds on their shirts does not protect either the Arizona or the St. Louis Cardinals---gone! Then there are the team names that glorify criminals who raped and pillaged as their way of life. We are talking the horrible Oakland Raiders, the Minnesota Vikings, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Pittsburgh Pirates!
Now, let us address those teams that clearly send the wrong message to our children--and it is all about the children. The Green Bay Packers and the St. Louis Rams--promote gay men. Wrong message to our children. The San Diego Chargers promote irresponsible spending habits. Wrong message to our children. The New York Giants and the San Francisco Giants promote obesity--a growing childhood epidemic. Wrong message to our children.
The Cincinnati Reds promote downers/barbiturates. Wrong message to our children. The Milwaukee Brewers--well, that goes without saying.... Wrong message to our children.
So, there you go. We need to support any legislation that comes out to rectify this travesty, because the government will likely become involved with this issue, as they should. A high priority directly behind efficiently managing our country's health care. Finally, so as to not offend all Americans everywhere . . . we should eliminate the name "Washington" from the Washington Whatevers. ••••• Why We Like Retirement Question: How many days in a week? Just before the funeral services, the undertaker came up to the very elderly widow and asked, 'How old was your husband?' '98,' she replied.... 'Two years older than me.'
'So you're 96,' the undertaker commented..

I've sure gotten old!
I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license. These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, 'For fast relief.'
My memory's not as sharp as it used to be. Also, my memory's not as sharp as it used to be.
Roger was preceeded in death by his parents and sister, Susan Pasqualone.
Roger is survived by his wife Norma J. Konczal, a long time Escondido Realtor, his daughters; Cheryl Clift, Delcine Curry, Merlena Beadle and seven grandchildren.
Military Service will be held at Ft. Rosecrans on 12/12/13 at 11A.M. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.
