Yes, I’m fully aware that many of my family and friends who know me and my often anti-cleric stands, who know of my many years of following Deism, and, more recently, the basic tenets of the Baha’i, would likely suffer fits of apoplexy (the old time word for cerebrovascular accident; seldom used anymore except by cranky old, curmudgeonly editors who enjoy confusing his readers with obsolete words. Today, it generally means “a state of extreme rage or excitement.”)

This cover story started out the way most cover stories start out. As an idea.
The idea: How could I, a notorious heathen, possibly comment upon the various Christian churches in North San Diego County? And to what purpose? Well, the answer to the first question was easy. I would start going God Show
The second question is also easy to Weaddress.absolutely love Joel Osteen, the handsome, smiling, television preacher who appears in the San Diego market every Sunday morning at 9am on ABC television (KGTV). He is an eloquent speaker, well prepared, always inspiring, always with just enough humor to bring forth a chuckle or two as well as a frequent smile, if not outright laughter. And, wonder of wonders! He gives his total message within a 30 minute time period! Would that more pastors attained that goal! All too many pastors are way too long winded . . . even the good ones.

Several pastors are outstanding speakers. Highly motivational, excellent senses of humor, and they have the talent to impart wisdom without you knowing you just went to school and learned something. Pretty sneaky, these guys. But I learned a lot more by going to church. Church has changed. In many cases, a lot. In others, not so Formuch.example, some of our pastors take the pulpit in blue jeans and a sport shirt, polo shirt, or in several cases, a tee shirt. They might wear sandals, or sneakers. Some of the churches offer both traditional music at one service and contemporary Christian music at the other. I, personally, don’t care much for the contemporary ‘New Age’ Christian music. I prefer the traditional church hymns and, even more, good old gospel music. The contemporary music is generally aimed at the younger demographic. The churches try to reach a broad spectrum, demographically, something for every age group and gender. Some churches are brilliantly organized and have grown like WeTopsy.have two or three local churches that are on the verge of becoming a “mega-church,” much like that of Joel Osteen’s Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

Seara Burton is not dead. Not even close. I don’t care what you heard. It all started in Richmond, Indiana. It was a day like any other. An average Wednesday. A routine traffic stop. Around 6:30 p.m. Officer Seara Burton was helping fellow officers with a motorist that had been pulled over. Her K-9 partner, Brev, leapt out of the cruiser to inspect the situation. To sniff for narcotics. A day like any other. Just an officer doing her job. Burton talked to the motorist. The driver pulled out a pistol. No hesitation. He aimed for her facial area. He shot her in the head. Seara Burton. A dog lover. Nice looking. Funny. Amiable. Kind. She was about to get married. She had a familiar face with a matinee smile. She was 28. North Coast is highly involved in local community service, averaging nearly two service projects a day. Every 18 months the church closes down all weekend services for a the sinners and saved alike. They also helped the Mission Hills Church in San Marcos form up and then become an independent entity, separate and distinct from their original parent. Here then, is my journey amongst the North County Christian churches. Obviously, I could not get to all of them. It took about three months of going to church every Sunday, sometimes twice on Sunday, in order to survey these churches. 2 hurt in fiery North County crash
The health benefits of square dancing – physical, mental, and social –have long been recognized. The Mayo Clinic nearly 30 years ago drew attention to how dancing helps cardiovascular conditioning and strengthens bone mass. Dr. Aaron Blackburn has stated “It’s clear that square-dancing is the perfect exercise. It combines all positive aspects of intense physical exercise with none of the negative elements” Square dancing can best be described as walking in time to music while responding to cues provided by a caller; it provides great exercise for the mind and body; this within a square of eight people that requires teamwork. Dancing together leads to social interaction of men and women that in turn helps our general wellbeing.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be factors in the crash as it remains under investigation.

The Movement in San Marcos is a pretty large church by now – up over a thousand, but only a couple years old. The pastor, Jeremy McGinty is a good guy. His brother Jobey leads worship. My sense is that it tends to be aimed at a generally younger demographic, based both on the contemporary christian music and the New Age graphics that appear throughout the church and featured prominently on its web site and in its graphics.
Pentecostal Churches follow different form of services, but all basically believe in the infusion of the Holy Spirit entering the preacher and his congregants and causing them to sing, dance, worship (in this case, worship is often described as clapping, holding up of hands, standing up, standing with both hands, palms up, in front of you, or dancing.) They also believe in the Holy Spirit bestowing upon the believers the ability to ‘speak in tongues.’ I attended four Pentecostal Church services but saw no evidence of ‘speaking in tongues,’ but plenty of singing, dancing, clapping. They also believe in the power of prayer being able to cure a number of afflictions.
This year, just over 2,000 bills were introduced and about 900 made it to the Governor’s desk. He has acted on just over 200 -- about 700 remain. As always, he has the final say.

SANDAG stalls once again. The Board of Directors urged for removal of the per-mile tax, yet the entire $162.5 billion plan relies on the ability to charge people for every mile they drive, demonstrating how completely out of touch SANDAG is to the challenges and needs of San Diegans.

Some of your more extreme Pentecostal Churches also believe in, and practice, snake handling. This is mostly practiced down south but the practice is diminishing. Most recently, a pastor in West Virginia died as a result of a timber rattlesnake bite he suffered. He, as most snake handler Pentecostals do, refused medical attention, believing his faith would save and cure him.
As a result of strong public opposition, SB 866, allowing minors 15 years and older to consent to being vaccinated without parental approval, was withdrawn from consideration by its author. SB 300, to reduce criminal penalties for major participants in serious felonies like murder or kidnapping, was also withdrawn by its author before a final vote.
In December 2021, SANDAG passed a $162.5 billion regional transportation plan, the most expensive transportation plan ever in San Diego County. To pay for the plan SANDAG proposes three sales tax increases, conversion of regular freeway lanes to toll lanes, and most controversial of all a charge for every mile driven within San Diego County. They are calling this mileage tax a “Road Usage Charge”.

Other significant bills approved in the last days include AB 1314, setting up a “Feather Alert” system for missing Native Americans, specifically women and children, similar to the Amber and Silver Alerts we’ve become familiar with.
In light of continuing attempts to place Sexually Violent Predators (SVPs) in rural San Diego County, I was a big supporter SB 1034 which creates more structure and transparency to make local authorities and stakeholders participants in the SVP placement process. I’m happy to report that SB 1034 passed without opposition.
Last week, CARB responded stating they were “disappointed” to learn that the SANDAG Board of Directors voted to direct staff to update the plan to exclude the road usage charge and urged SANDAG staff to leave it in the adopted plan. They questioned SANDAG’s approach and stated that there are “significant concerns” that the plan they are evaluating is not the plan SANDAG intends to implement.
Another bill receiving final legislative approval, SB 846, directs the California Public Utilities Commission to extend the Diablo Canyon Power Plant beyond its scheduled retirement in 2025, making more electricity available for California. Firearms-related legislation included SB 918 and AB 1227. Despite the recent Supreme Court ruling about concealed carry permits, SB 918 included a long list of locations where firearms would still not be permitted. AB 1227 would have added new excise taxes on the purchase of firearms and ammunition – I joined the majority to vote down both bills.

After public outcry and bi-partisan opposition, the SANDAG Board passed the $165 billion plan with the road usage charge in place. The SANDAG Board then immediately directed staff to find alternatives to the road use charge and return within six months with options. In July of this year SANDAG staff stated they needed more time (until Spring 2023) to further study alternatives to the road user Allcharge.California regional transportation plans must be approved by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The current SANDAG plan, with the road usage charge included, is currently being evaluated by CARB. On July 11th a letter was sent to CARB alerting them to the to the lack of transparency from SANDAG, who submitted the plan to CARB without removing the road usage charge, that the plan meeting just a few blocks from where I lived. I and a pal, George Hofmann, would attend a couple of these. We were never able to stay for the full service however, as they were evening meetings and did not end until after our bedtime.
Pastor Ted Hamilton is a graduate of the Westminster Seminary in Escondido and previous to becoming a pastor he was a lawyer specializing in tax law, located in Orange County. The church is a member of PCA (Presbyterian Church in America), a conservative branch of Presbyterianism and what is referred to as a Reformed NewCongregation.Lifestarted in 1977 as a home Bible study in Mira Mesa. Worship services formally began in 1978 in an elementary school in Mira Mesa with eight families. In 1979 the young congregation moved to a facility in Poway. New Life moved to Escondido, purchased and constructed its current facility, planted two daughter churches, and realigned its denominational affiliation from the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) to the PCA. In October 2001, Ted Hamilton was called and installed as Senior Pastor of New Life.
We had heard these folks were “holy rollers.” That, toward the end of the service, they would fall down on the carpeted floors of the tent and roll up and down the aisles. I was never able to confirm this because we had gone home to get to bed before the end of the service. (These services were often held on school nights).
I suspect these types of Pentecostal/Tent Revival Services are mostly found down South these days - perhaps they are still held in the midwest . . . though I have not followed their progress.
While there, however, we saw quite a show. Invariably, the preacher was a singer, dancer, instrumentalist (often with nothing more than a tambourine) and, above all else, a master storyteller and showman.
Charging San Diegans for every mile they drive is not acceptable. It's time for all SANDAG to come back to reality, collaborate and reach for a balanced plan for all San Diegans!

Earlier this year, when Russia invaded Ukraine, Airbnb decided to stop doing business in Russia. It also suspended all Russian accounts. How did it know if you have a Russian account? When it sees the +7 country code on your contact phone number, Airbnb assumes it's a Russian account, and it's automatically suspended.

I had no history with Airbnb. I've only stayed in an Airbnb once, as someone else's guest. I tried contacting Airbnb support on Twitter. A representative promised to forward my request to the right department. After a couple of hours, I received their standard "we are blocking you, goodbye" email. Then Airbnb ignored me on Twitter I'd like to know why they froze my account. I'd also like to get my account unblocked. Can you help me? -- Maksym Bidnychenko, Lviv, Ukraine A: I'm so sorry to hear about your account suspension. I can't even imagine what it's like to have your country invaded. But then to have your Airbnb account disabled, too- that's just adding insult to injury.
I arrived, I discovered the unit was uninhabitable. The condo smelled of mold and mildew, and the furniture was threadbare and filthy. I had difficulty breathing.
A common saying back then: “Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won’t be long before $5,000 will only buy a used one.”
To get Airbnb talking again, you can appeal to one of the executives I list on my consumer advocacy site. Here are the names, numbers and email addresses of the key managers at Airbnb. I wondered about your first Airbnb stay. It appears you stayed in the property but that someone else used their account to reserve and pay for the rental. Did that someone else have their account disabled, too? And if so, why? But it appears Airbnb took no action against your friend. So what happened? As I dug deeper into your case, I realized the answer was staring right at you. Since you lived in Russia, your phone number started with +7. Airbnb banned you because it thought you were Russian. Ironically, you are Ukrainian.
I reviewed your paper trail. You didn't mention your rental contract in your discussions with Marriott or the vacation rental agency. You did, however, show it photos of the threadbare furniture.
When you find yourself in a situation like this -- and I hope you never do again -- you have to document everything. Keep your contracts and emails, and take lots of photos -- not just of the threadbare furniture, but of any mold or dangerous conditions that would prove your rental is uninhabitable.
Your rights to a refund aren't governed by Marriott's terms of service but by the rental agreement you signed with that third party. Under most rental contracts, you can get a refund if there's a problem with the health or safety of the unit. Mold and construction definitely qualify, but you need to work that out with the rental company.
I think Airbnb should have explained why it shut down your account. Instead, it just stopped talking to you.
“Kids today are impossible. Those duck tail haircuts make it impossible to stay groomed. Next thing you know boys will be wearing their hair as long as the girls.” Some 30 years in the distance past from my high school graduation my dad was still complaining about the duck tail I had for my graduation portrait. Then things got serious at the barber shop: “If they think I’ll pay 50 cents for a haircut, forget it!” But then by 1958, haircuts had shot up to 75 cents.

my points refunded. But Marriott is deferring to another company that manages its vacation rentals and will not give me my points. Can you help?
Ultimately, I think Marriott bears some of the responsibility for this rental. After all, it put its name on your rental and allowed you to use your points. The least it could do is give you a straight answer before referring you back to the rental company. I list the names, numbers and emails of Marriott's executives on my consumer advocacy site. I think a brief, polite email might have helped resolve this.

If you want the true meaning of “Inflation,” here are some examples of things people were saying back in 1957 when I was a senior in high school. Here’s one that was heard: “I’ll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it’s going to be impossible to buy a week’s groceries for $20.” Back in 1957, I overheard my mother tell my father: “I can’t feed the family for $15 a week.” Dad started giving her $20 weekly. He had a pained look on his face each Saturday when he would dig into his wallet.
I contacted Marriott on your behalf. It refunded your points without offering any further explanation.
I contacted Airbnb on your behalf. The company responded to you almost immediately. "We apologize for the inconvenience caused," the company said. "Your account has been restored and you can use Airbnb as normal."

In Iowa, the standard price of gas was 29.9 cents a gallon. Down in Missouri, there always was a “gas war.” Once I got a tank full for .13.9, per gallon in Kansas City. During the late ‘70s gas shot up to .50 cents. There was a lot griping about the high price of gas. Get a haircut

I have a bad back and am not going to suffer injury because of some church protocol. I regretted having to leave as the preacher seemed interesting, but it was simply more than I was able to tolerate. I vowed to return another time and learn a bit more. On my second return to ‘The North Point,’ it was toward the middle of the service. I had attended another church service earlier and decided to catch the finale of Sunday’s service at this church.
If you like Pentecostal, you’d have loved Pastor Sargent. He’s a fascinating bear of a man; born with his left arm extending only to his elbow, he became a master storyteller, a master showman, and he tends to shout his sermon rather than talk it through. This is good for those of us with hearing aids. He reminded me a lot of the preacher(s) I would see and hear at the old tent revivals back in Omaha. He would dance on the stage, dance in the aisles, he’d leave the stage and come into the aisle and look at individual congregants, he’d jump on a chair in the front row and continue his ‘hell, fire and brimstone’ type of preaching. It was quite entertaining as he told a very realistic biblical story which was at the core of his extremely dramatic presOften, entation.his congregants would clap, stand and acknowledge his message, amid frequent shouts of “Yes!” and “Hallelujah!.” It was religious theatre at its best. Growing up, this weekend was the unofficial end of summer, sometimes celebrated with a symbolic final BBQ, but with the heat we’ve been having it doesn’t feel that way. But for me at least, the summer season is ending, just maybe not the high temperatures. I like this holiday, because it celebrates and honors Labor. Most of us are laborers. I like the idea that the end of the summer event/holiday is a few days of suspension from our own work. I think this country was built by hardworking people, and it seems appropriate that we recognize those efforts.

During the season you’ll often find him on the sidelines serving as a source of inspiration and encouragement to the team, as well as through the chapel services, Bible studies and meetings he conducts for coaches, players and their families several times a week.

A Weekly Message from the Mayor of Your Community published in the belief that it is important for elected leaders to communicate with their constituents and that constituents have a means of hearing from their elected leaders.
A lot has been said about the value and dignity of Labor. There is no shortage of inspiring quotes about it. But for me, and I think for many people, the value of labor is in its honesty, and in the satisfaction, it produces when you accomplish something. I think it is necessary to our mental health, and when challenging, the value is the character it builds. It teaches us about ourselves. If you haven’t, I hope you share your thoughts with your children about labor. In a society that sometimes preaches the value that we all should be as rich as possible and as soon as possible, I think our children are missing out on the reward of simply doing hard work.
In the end, then, our survey determined that, indeed, North County churches do have pastors/preachers that have similar charismatic qualities, that utilize storytelling and showmanship, are able to motivate and inspire their congregants . . . and they do a fine job of it.

I would have liked to talk with Pastor Sargent but he declined to return numerous phone calls. Sadly, the church is no more. Where it used to be is now an Assembly of God Church (corner of Ash and El Norte). Of this particular church, I know nothing. I am wondering what happened to Pastor Sargent. “You’re not the same person you were before surgery. You are literally someone else. “Something inside you changes. There isn’t a day that goes by when I don’t think of my donor. I’m alive because that family made a decision in a time of grief.”
Then there’s Roger. He grew up with cystic fibrosis. When I called, he was about to hike into Grand Canyon. A lifelong dream for him. “I basically lived in a hospital until my donors could be found. I was going to die there. “But then my doctor came in and said they found a donor. I started crying. I was like, ‘Which organ?’ The doctor said it was for my liver AND kidneys. “My donor was a 24-year-old police officer. I’m in the Grand Canyon today because of his gift.”
I asked what it’s like having someone else’s heart.
Right now, doctors are flipping off Seara’s machines. The blinking lights will no longer blink. The IV drips will no longer drip. Likely, her family and friends have gathered around her in silence, remembering the sacred wonder she brought into this world. Surgeons will cart her away. And although nobody will ever see her beautiful face again, her beautiful energy shall not vanish. Her heart will continue to live. So will her spirit. This world will miss her dearly. Her department will miss her fiercely. But Seara Burton is not dead. No way. No how. Sean Dietrich is an author, columnist, singer, lecturer, and humorist. He is affectionately known as “Sean of the South.”
As the Internet continues to become ever more capable in handling high speed applications, it has become clear that that for the great majority of PC users, the era of constantly increasing PC speeds and storage capacities ended years ago. Even power users of stand-alone applications like solids modeling, gaming, day trading, crypto-currency mining etc will eventually be co-opted by Internet supercomputers.
Before the Internet came to dominate, our PCs worked as stand-alone computing devices. We purchased floppies, CDs and DVDs to load and execute the programs and applications we used. Tax, finance, art, graphics, spread sheets, genealogy and word processing are just some examples of the applications we used. Our PCs were required to have the processing power to run the applications and the storage capacity to hold the application programs and the data files generated. As the Internet matured, powerful network servers began to take over the number crunching and storage activities, once the sole domain of the stand-alone PC. Most applications no longer require local storage and processing power because their processing and storage can be accomplished on the Internet. We no longer need to buy floppies, CDs or DVDs to load programs because we can access and run our applications directly on the Internet. Our PCs slowly have become little more than “dumb Internet terminals.”
