Editor’s Note: Following receipt of Bruce’s story, we did a bit more searching online to find out more information about this type of activity.

According to the pet-purveying street sellers, different colored dogs fetch different prices. A white poodle, for instance, would be priced at around 700RMB, a reddish coat will up that price to 1000RMB, and a “Teddy” sells for even higher - at 1500RMB. So in order to make sure all the dogs are “teddies,” they dye them.

“At around 11:10am, Mr. Wei and his wife put on their gloves, which had already been dyed to a purplish color from their natural yellow, and began preparing the toothbrush, dye paste, and a pot of hot water. After, Mr. Wei entered a 10-square-meter room, I could already detect the acrid smell from within.

At 12:30pm, I managed to infiltrate the premises to see what was going on. At that time, Mr. Wei's wife was working on a white poodle puppy. She used a toothbrush to color the puppy's face before lowering him into the vat of dye and hot water. Because the water temperature was very high, the little puppy kept screaming. She moved the puppy around to get all its fur wet with dye, blow dried it, and then began smoothing the color out. After the coat was dry, she began the process again. By this point, the puppy had stopped struggling.

If Mr. Wei's wife saw that the water was getting lighter, she would take out another bottle of dye and add more. She said "our place's chemicals are the best, one dye will last roughly a month."

Since puppies aren't made to withstand large doses of chemicals, they are usually very unhealthy by the time they get to market. To perk them up, the sellers said, they feed them cough medicine. Puppies doped up on cough medicine can stay active and playful for about ten hours before they collapse.

While this news report is from Beijing, illegal dog sellers are all over China - including in Shanghai. If you're thinking of adopting a new pet (or know of anyone who is) make sure you're going through a reputable seller. Even better, consider giving organizations like SCAA a call.

The worst thing you can do for yourself or dogkind - is pick up a puppy from some guy selling them off the street. Even here in America, it’s best to NOT buy from pet stores as they often get their dogs from Puppy Mills in the midwest; nor from backyard breeders. Better to see your local rescure organization or Humane Society.

Now, the house rules are slightly different. This year, because I have decided that 47% of you don't know how to take care of nice things, paper plates and red Solo cups will be used. They might be bad for the environment, but I'll be gone soon and that will be your problem to deal with.

House Rules: 1. The University of Texas no longer plays Texas A&M. The television stays off during the meal. 2. The "no cans for kids" rule still exists. We are using 2 liter bottles because your children still open a third can before finishing the first two. Parents can fill a child's cup when it is empty. All of the cups have names on them and I'll be paying close attention to refills. 3. Chloe, last year we were at Trudy's house and I looked the other way when your Jell-O salad showed up. This year, if Jell-O salad comes in the front door it will go right back out the back door with the garbage. Save yourself some time, honey. You've never been a good cook and you shouldn't bring something that wiggles more than you. Buy something from the bakery. 4. Grandmothers give grandchildren cookies and candy. That is a fact of life. Your children can eat healthy at your home. At my home, they can eat whatever they like as long as they finish it. 5. I cook with bacon and bacon grease. That's nothing new. Your being a vegetarian doesn't change the fact that stuffing without bacon is like egg salad without eggs. Even the green bean casserole has a little bacon grease in it. That's why it tastes so good. Not eating bacon is just not natural. And as far as being healthy... look at me. I've outlived almost everyone I know. 6. Salad at Thanksgiving is a waste of space. 7. I do not like cell phones. Leave them in the car. 8. I do not like video cameras. There will be 32 people here. I am sure you can capture lots of memories without the camera pointed at me. 9. Being a mother means you have to actually pay attention to the kids. I have nice things and I don't put them away just because company is coming over. Mary, watch your kids and I'll watch my things. 10. Rhonda, a cat that requires a shot twice a day is a cat that has lived too many lives. I think staying home to care for the cat is your way of letting me know that I have lived too many lives too. I can live with that. Can you? 11. Words mean things. I say what I mean. Let me repeat: You don't need to bring anything means you don't need to bring anything. And if I did tell you to bring something, bring it in the quantity I said. Really, this doesn't have to be difficult. 12. Domino's and cards are better than anything that requires a battery or an on/off switch. That was true when you were kids and it's true now that you have kids. 13. Showing up for Thanksgiving guarantees presents at Christmas. Not showing up guarantees a card that may or may not be signed.

In memory of your Grandfather, the back fridge will be filled with beer. Drink until it is gone. I prefer wine anyway. But one from each family needs to be the designated driver. I really mean all of the above.

In Case You Missed It

Legislation in Sacramento often flies under the radar. Here are a few bills you may have missed that made it through, along with some that didn’t:

Bills forwarded to the Governor that remain unsigned as of this writing include AB 2188, prohibiting employers from terminating or refusing to hire persons using cannabis if impaired work performance is unproven; SB 70, requiring children to complete a year of kindergarten before entering the first grade; and SB 1157, phasing in additional water conservation targets by reducing indoor use from 52.5 gallons per person/day (gpcd) to 42 gpcd by 2030.

Bills that have been signed include AB 2608, requiring elections officials to provide a duplicate vote-by-mail ballot to a voter’s “representative” upon receipt of a written request; AB 257, establishing a Fast Food Sector Council that will unilaterally set higher minimum wages and create more state regulations and mandates in the fast food industry; and SB 1338, establishing CARE Courts for the mentally ill, allowing family members to petition courts requesting treatment for those suffering from addiction or severe mental illness.

Rejected bills include AB 937, prohibiting law enforcement from notifying immigration authorities when violent felons are released; AB 2133, requiring a reduction of statewide greenhouse gas emissions to at least 55% below 1990 levels by 2030; SB 57, allowing certain communities in Los Angeles and the Bay Area to operate “safe injection sites” for people using illegal drugs (passed, but vetoed); and SB 930, establishing a pilot program permitting some California cities to extend alcohol sales to 4 a.m. on weekends/holidays, and 3 a.m. on all other days.

Stop Sexually Violent Predators

Over the past few years, San Diego County has become a dumping ground for the worst of the worst, Sexually Violent Predators. You’ve probably heard or read about these monsters being placed in communities like Borrego Springs, Mt. Helix and one even being proposed in Rancho Bernardo.

Last year, I led the effort at the Board of Supervisors to oppose any further placements of Sexually Violent Predators in San Diego County until local jurisdictions have a seat at the table with full veto authority. This vote passed unanimously, with all Board members agreeing that San Diego County should have local control when it comes to the placement of Sexually Violent Predators. Yet, the State of California has disregarded that decision and continues to propose placements of these predators.

My office has received word that the State of California plans to propose the placement of five more Sexually Violent Predators in San Diego County, by the end of the year. This is unacceptable and we need to do all we can to stop these placements. County. If you want to see these placements stopped, sign the petition at SupervisorJimDesmond.com. We plan on submitting the signatures to the Governor and State representatives.

For too long, our communities in San Diego County have been living in fear knowing a Sexually Violent Predator could be placed in their neighborhood. It’s time for everyone to come together and stop these placements.

Travel Troubleshooter

Q: Back in 2019, I made a reservation for my wife and myself to go on Vantage Travel's Croatia & Culinary Gems of the Adriatic Coast tour. Other members of our family were also planning to join us on this trip. I made the final payment of $20,655 for our trip in October 2019.

As part of the cost of the trip, I paid $999 per person for a "cancel for any reason" travel insurance policy from TripMate. Part of the reason was in case my sister-in-law's cancer recurred. Unfortunately, it did, and she died before the trip.

In early 2020, we canceled our tour and initiated a refund request through Vantage Travel. I also submitted a claim to TripMate. Because of the pandemic, Vantage canceled our tour before its scheduled departure.

TripMate reviewed the claim and approved it in mid-2020 but said payment would be made by Vantage.

I have emailed Vantage multiple times and have made several phone calls. Twice on phone calls, a representative provided projected dates when we would receive a refund. However, we have not received any refund or a written assurance as to when we will receive one. Can you help me get my $20,655 back? -- David Maddox, Arlington, Va.

A: I'm so sorry about the loss of your sister-in-law. You should have received a quick refund on your prepaid, nonrefundable expenses after TripMate approved your claim. I don't know why you didn't, but I know you aren't alone. Many travelers had the same problem during the early days of the pandemic. It was a confusing time.

You handled this one by the book. You bought the correct insurance for your needs. A "cancel for any reason" policy will allow you to cancel your vacation for any reason and receive a partial refund. But some restrictions apply. Your TripMate policy was a little different from the standard "cancel for any reason" policy. It lets you cancel, and you'll receive your entire prepaid, nonrefundable trip cost "in the form of a Vantage Travel Certificate for the cancellation penalty amount."

So the best you could have done was a voucher. But Vantage also canceled your cruise. In that situation, you should have had a choice between a voucher and a refund. It looks like things got confused between your claim, the Vantage cancellation and your refund request.

I publish the names, numbers and email addresses of the Vantage executives on my consumer advocacy site. A brief, polite email to one of them might have un-confused the process. Bottom line: You should not have to wait years for a company to refund your purchase.

I contacted Vantage on your behalf, and it refunded your cruise.

Problem Solved

Q: My family and I planned a trip to Hawaii two years ago. We booked our tickets on American Airlines through Expedia. Our trip included airfare and hotel.

We canceled the trip because of the pandemic. We received a refund for the hotel, but American Airlines gave us a ticket credit.

In March 2021, I used some of this credit for another trip. When I used some of these credits, an Expedia representative told me I now had until Oct. 31, 2022, to use the remaining credits.

In November 2021, I looked on my Expedia account online and did see that I had four airline credits for $508 each (one for each of my family members). I took a screenshot of this information and emailed it to my husband to show him for our records and to remember to use the credit.

I went to book a trip this May using this credit to find my credit was now gone. Expedia tells me that it expired in March 2022. Expedia reps promised they would look into this. I sent them the screenshot of my credits, with passenger names and the Oct. 31, 2022 expiration date. I also told them to check the phone records because they told me Oct. 31, 2022.

I believe this is an Expedia error that they are not owning up to. Perhaps the credits expired, but they told me that the expiration date was Oct. 31, 2022, and I had proof. I get emails from them that they reviewed my case and the credits are expired, and that's it. Can you help me get my credit back? -Melissa Smithers, Lansdale, Pa.

A: If your ticket credits don't expire until October, you should still have a valid ticket credit with American Airlines. This is just a mistake, right?

‘Ma, Ya Made My Pants Too Big!’

During the past few years I realized I was getting old because I could no longer keep up my pants with just a belt. Let me explain …

When I started kindergarten in September 1945, I had to wear suspenders to keep up my pants. Despite my pleadings to my Mother I had to follow through using what the British call “braces.”

My cousin Bob, who was only six months older, got to wear his new Western belt, complete with a shiny silver buckle … just like Roy Rogers. Bob’s butt stuck out slightly so he had a natural platform on which to hang his corduroys. (Those were the days when denim jeans were around, but expensive and hard to find.) My Mom made my pants and she left plenty of room for me to grow into. I looked somewhat like a giant, slender bean pole with sagging bark.

I have to admit those suspenders were a step up from the blue bib overalls which were my alternative daily schoolwear. It would be my entering two more grades before my butt was ample enough to support a belt. The step up in my school wear came at the right time. I had my first “crush” in the second grade. The recipient of my affection was our teacher, Miss Harvey. She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen alive and off the silver screen. She drove a new 1947 black Ford coupe, making me a Ford man for life. Miss Harvey left us later in the year to get married. I felt betrayed.

I must point out that Billy A. got to wear sleek, new, blue Levi’s that year. His Mom went the extra mile (dollars) to get them by making a special school wear safari to Des Moines. My Mom was a Montgomery Ward catalog loyalist. She could buy anything for $2 less than any store-bought goods. Billy A. looked great, although he could care less. He shunned all females in the class … he was a loner, but to us other guys in those days he was, well, kinda cool.

I got over my disappointment of losing Miss Marian Harvey because it was the very next year a young raven-haired beauty displaced that older woman making things more age-appropriate. I doubt if the new girl ever detected my attraction, but that’s one of the hazards of young love.

It was about 1947 we got our first refrigerator. It was right after World War II had ended. Appliances such as that electric marvel were almost impossible to get. I think my parents were on some sort of waiting list until my Uncle Dean came to the rescue. He was a refrigeration repairman and somehow obtained two (2) brand new Kelvinator refrigerators. Many people in Seymour, Iowa had ice boxes because unless you had the money to buy an electric refrigerator before the War, (during the Great Depression), you had to go the ice “block” method because all of the appliance manufacturers were producing implements of war.

We got one of those new refrigerators, which fit quite nicely into the space where our beloved icebox had sat since 1938. Each week Jerry Johnson, our iceman cometh, leaving a 25pound chunk of ice which lasted exactly one week. We had a little sign in our front-room window that read “Ice” in big black letters. Around each side were numbers: 25, 50, 75, 100. You made your week’s request by sitting the sign in the window with the desired number showing at the top. We always got a 25 pounders because anything bigger wouldn’t fit our unit’s ice compartment.

That same year was memorable because we were blessed with an indoor toilet. Dad was doing his best to bring our family into the 20th century. For us, the time-honored backyard privy was giving way to modern conveniences. We rejoiced, of course. If you’ve never had the call of nature during a cold winter night with a temperature of minus 10 degrees, you’re spoiled and don’t know the true meaning of commitment. To make this modern convenience possible, Dad had hired two grave diggers from the nearby South Lawn Cemetery to hack out a 10 foot-by-10-foot square by 8foot-deep hole for a septic tank. He built a wooden walled-structure around this great hole and filled the walls with cement, giving form to a giant square tank. For an eight-yearold it was a marvel to behold. My Dad could do anything --- even create a big cement-lined box in the ground; it would have made a great bomb shelter Looking back, I guess we were poor, but by our community standards we were “middle class” because Dad had good credit with which to barter for necessities around our town’s business square. You might think these little stories are conjured up out of fading memories, but I assure you this is what the little farming community of Seymour, Iowa and my family were like in the middle of the fourth decade of the 20th century. … an idyllic period nearly lost to history.

show. It is the house of the Lord and the pastor is to be the shepherd keeping his flock safe, filled with truth, and teaching the bible so we can learn to be and act like our precious Lord, Jesus Christ.

The fact that you love Joel Osteen, reveals just how lost you are. He is a false prophet that misleads people in fantasies and empty promises. He does not teach the Word, which is what God is all about.

Instead of feel good sermons, he should be teaching people how to prepare for the times to come, how to love people and share the gospel of Jesus Christ.

You should realize religion and politics are sensitive issues. To write such an article was in very poor taste.

Oh, by the way, you would not like The Mission Church where I attend because our love filled teaching sermons by a brilliant pastor lasts an hour.

Church is not something you check off a box of things you have to do, it is learning to be like Jesus everyday, and that comes from a deeper knowledge and relationship with the Lord daily.

Thou:” I have to wonder if your even read the cover story or merely skimmed it, looking for rocks to throw.

I clearly pointed out that I am, and have been for many years, a heathen; a non-Christian. Did you not read that? It’s on the front page, third paragraph. The very next paragraph, if you will re-read, refers to my many years of being a Deist, and, more recently, admiring the Baha’i faith.

How dare you write that pastors should keep their sermons to 30 minutes.

No, how dare you try to determine what I say? The better pastors/speakers get their message across in 30 minutes or less.

Also the fact that you are unable to stand during worship for our Lord, the most high is absolutely unapprectiative, unless you have physical issues.

It happens that I have degenerative low back arthritis and am unable to stand for long periods of time. But even if I did not have arthritis I would not stand for a full church service. Who are you to dictate what I or any other person attending a church service must stand? Even the ushers at several churches said members did not need to stand if they chose not to. determine who I enjoy as a pastor? Pastor Osteen is an outstanding speaker and, again, if you will reread the cover story, you will see that the entire exercise was dedicated to discovering if we had outstanding speakers/pastors in North San Diego County.

I’m sure Pastor Osteen will follow your advice when writing his sermons and write them to please you rather than what he feels and wants to say.

How dare you determine that I am “lost” because I admire Joel Osteen’s sermons? Have you ever heard the expression, “Mind your own business?”

And if you are representative of the congregation and ministry at Mission Church then I most certainly would not like to attend. I can’t believe the other congregants are as vicious as you are.

You are the perfect example of why I am not a Christian. You are an absolute bigot.

Comments on Friedrich Gomez

I've noticed that Friedrich Gomez uses British (or U.K.) spelling in his cover stories. Like "organisation" instead of "organization." Also, his surname is Spanish, but his first name is very Germanic. From past Letters to the Editor it has been pointed out that he reads, writes, and speaks perfect, fluent German. A retired professor of German (Temple University) who is a close family friend told us that he met/spoke with Friedrich at "Cruisin' Grand" and that his German (and regional accent) was perfect and even more grammatically correct than the average German or Austrian citizen! Questions (1) How did Friedrich pick up British spelling? [He lived in Great Britains for several years].(2) Did he live in Germany or Austria? [Germany] (3) Is he of part British or Germanic ancestry? [No, he is a

Kumeyaay Indian who has trav-

eled a great deal] (4) He is said to be of Native American heritage and if so, what tribe or nation? [See above]. Finally, I've never, ever known any writer to be as modest as he is. I am a local Christian who a was a member of North Coast before they moved to the facility in Vista. The photo shown is of Larry Osborne (not Chris Brown) the lead Pastor when the church met, in the business park where UFO is on Melrose, before the move to Vista. Chris Brown came to the church in 2004, but Larry was the lead Pastor.

I've been a member of New Song since 2006. Pastor Hal is a true man of God. Jim Britts has had his own church for many years.

A Grateful Reader

Dear Mr. Davis, If you recall, an obituary for my mom, Sylvia Clark, was printed in The Paper, dated May 26, 2022. That particular issue memorialized the 200th cover story written by esteemed writer, Friedrich Gomez.

The outstanding cover story in last week’s The Paper again wrtten by Mr. Gomez, hit a nerve as I was reading the articfle. I will get to why in a moment.

Mr. Gomez’s story reminded me of the satirical opinion that to be healthier, see doctors less. It is sad to learn that preventable medical errors account for up to 251,000 deaths annually in the Unites States, making these medical mistakes the third leading fause of death (after heart disease and cancer). I just read The Paper and read the articles. Just want to make some comments. I and my husband listened for years to Dr. Schuller at the Crystal Cathedral and loved his saying and book “Tough Times Never Last but Tough People Do.” He was a great man and gave us inspiration.

We used to also listen to Joel Olsteen and purchase his books which were inspirational, but when the terrible flood happened in Houston, he initially wouldn’t open his church to the people who needed shelter. When the mattress man know as Mattress Max in Houston opened his whole store to house people who needed shelter even though they’d be living and sleeping on his brand new mattresses and furniture. Fair warning, this week’s topic may be a little dry but I think it is important to discuss. It is about the implementation of SB 9. Now you may ask what is that, and the simple answer is that it is a law passed at the state level that allows the owner of a single family dwelling unit (house on a lot) to either add another single family unit or an Additional Dwelling Unit (ADU) which simplified is a smaller house. Depending upon the zoning there are numerous combinations of single-family units and ADUs that could be developed to include a lot split. The idea is that we create more housing. But like most things it is never that simple, despite how well intentioned it might be. When you look at what the Planning Department normally considers like Location,

Floor Area, Setbacks, Height, Parking, etc. SB 9 only addresses some of them.

There are two things to consider. One is the loss of local control. And the other is maintaining the standards of a neighborhood and by extension the city. Our Planning department has that responsibility. We just passed some rules that address the holes in SB 9 but it is still a brave new world. This is something we need to watch to make sure we get it right.

“Ageism” as presented in last week’s feature article by Friedrich Gomez is an excellent example of today’s obsession with the prejudice and bias that dominate our nation’s self image. Friedrich points out that the relationship between seniors and their medical practitioners can be tainted by generalized notions concerning the characteristics and effects of aging. That fact that cognitive function can decline with age is true, but that does not mean that all or even most people over seventy are mentally impaired and to be treated with condescension. This patronizing attitude many display when dealing with seniors is annoying and frustrating, especially to seniors who

Queen Elizabeth’s dogs didn’t know (and didn’t care) that she was the Queen. She was just the lady who loved them and had a plan for them now that she’s gone.

Like the Queen, if you have a pet, you need a plan.

It’s sad when a confused pet comes to a shelter because their owner died or left with no plan for their future.

Charlie, a 200-pound Mastiff, lived with his mom and her caretaker. His owner died, assuming that the caretaker would take Charlie. But there was no proof of her intentions and Charlie was taken to a shelter, where he spent a year wondering what happened to his home and his people. We got Charlie transferred of the Expedia executives I list on my consumer advocacy site. Unfortunately, that didn't bring you any closer to a resolution.

I've been getting a planeload of cases that involve expiring ticket credits. The problem is the pandemic. It is lasting much longer than anyone thought, and airlines sometimes changed their credit terms in 2021, which led to some vouchers expiring sooner than expected.

My advice? Whenever possible, ask for a refund instead of a credit. And if you have to accept a credit, everyone should do what you did: Take a screenshot and save it.

Biases and prejudices had their roots in self preservation. Based on incomplete or rudimentary knowledge they were mental short cuts that helped us avoid behavior or associations that might endanger us. In primitive cultures we learned trust the familiar and be wary of the unfamiliar. Even today we carry some of those survival instincts as biases or prejudices. While prejudice typically indicates a negative bias, a bias can be negative or positive, e.g., “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” In today’s world we have come to recognize the fact that these self-preservation shortcuts may have negative consequences for others. Being able to distinguish between biases that protect us from risk and those that needlessly disadvantage others is a work in progress in America and Western civilization.

Nearly all of us have vestigial biases that influence our attitudes toward certain group identities. Americans for the most part are able to set aside generalized identity biases and conduct relationships treating others as individuals rather than members of an identity. This enlightened view has made America a beacon of tolerance in a world of intolerance. We’re pretty good but we aren’t perfect. The biased and prejudicial behaviors once meant to protect us from harm, for some people have been trans-

The flip side to the “bigot” is the modern movement known as “Woke”. The “Woke” holds a simplistic if somewhat superficial view of human activity and like “bigots”; the “Woke” is also based on an irrational intolerance. “Woke” identifies the ordinary white, heterosexual human as the primary source of societal problems, recognizing the White, heterosexual male as the “vanguard”. Fortunately these lost White souls can achieve absolution through “virtue signaling.” By acknowledging culpability and accepting responsibility on behalf of the White race for most negative social outcomes throughout history, a White human can be freed from guilt and gain acceptance into the “Woke” community. It’s a temptation that many of the young and naïve find irresistible. Folding comfortably into academic favor, believing that, for the first time, they are exposing evil forces haunting mankind from the beginning of time, and feeling part of an important social movement can be highly satisfying.

In the “Woke” world antisocial, violent or criminal action by groups considered marginalized or oppressed is forgiven, justified or applauded as simply a relevant response to “oppression”. Biological men dominate sporting events intended for biological women and cruise women’s dressing rooms and lavatories when they feel a bit trans. Historic statues and monuments are destroyed as the “Woke” apply present day ethical and moral values to the activities of men and women who lived in a completely different world. The names of sports teams, stadiums, civic centers, schools, streets and, bridges are changed in the name of protecting identity group sensitivities. Political leaders even encourage physical confrontation and violence against those who do not support the “Woke” agenda. The great majority of Americans of all ages, races sexual orientations, body shapes, religions etc are neither “bigots nor “Woke” We’re the silent majority of Americans, that, along with everyone else get “shoe horned” into one or another identity group by the “bigots” and “Woke.” The “Woke” and their political allies lump each of us into some identity group assuming that the identity defines us in some politically meaningful way. They are wrong. We are not black, brown or white. We are not Republicans, Democrats Liberals, Conservatives, Independents, Seniors, Racists, Bigots, Woke, Baptist, Jews, Agnostics or any other identity. We are Americans and we like to think for ourselves.

He’s not alone. Industry insiders say their customers started to book their trips at the last minute during the early days of the pandemic because of the uncertainty of travel.

They’re still doing that, forcing providers to adjust the way they set their prices. In other words: Don’t stress out if you aren’t finding a bargain months before your trip. Your patience may reward you with a lower price — eventually. But don’t wait too long.

Being a contrarian can lead to deep discounts, too. For example, if you’re looking for a discounted cruise or vacation package, a big-box store probably isn’t the first place that comes to mind. Maybe it should be. Wholesale stores such as Sam’s Club and Costco have earned reputations for offering deep discounts, particularly during the pandemic, according to deal experts.

“The deals posted to their website tend to be anywhere from 10 to 30 percent less,” says Andrea Woroch, a Bakersfield, Calif.based budget travel expert.

Deal hounds have had to adapt to the new travel environment. Ashley Lands goes through various steps to find the best price. Lands, who runs a digital marketing agency in New York, checks Google Flights early on Monday or Tuesday mornings. She has noticed lower prices on flights from New York to Orlando, in one instance by as much as $250 for a holiday weekend.

“And when you find a low price,” she adds, “don’t wait. I can’t overstate how important this is.”

She recently hesitated for a few hours, only to find the fare had risen by $700. The procrastination effectively killed her trip.

One more thing: In travel, a deal isn’t always a deal. It can be easy to go for the lowest price. But you might be following the wrong instinct, says Julie Ramhold, a consumer analyst with DealNews.

“The truth is that just because these are the cheapest on the surface doesn’t mean they’re actually all that cheap in the long run,” she says.

For instance, a budget airline might seem as if it has the lowest rate. But once you factor in other fees and having to pay for extras such as a bottle of water on your flight or your checked bag or carry-on, you may end up paying the same (or more) as the regular fare from a legacy carrier. Also, the tickets may be more restrictive, so if you need a refund, you’ll be out of luck.

So what’s a traveler to do? Experts have told me that at a time like this, they’ve seen too many people rush to book a “deal,” only to discover that it was too restrictive — or too good to be true.
