By any stretch of the imagination, it should never have happened. And yet it did. Something unbelievable transpired 104 years ago that still brings scholars together to reexamine the events and attempt to understand how the seemingly impossible was, in fact, made possible. It was said to be a Christmas miracle truce of World War I. Of all the unusual events of The Paper - 760.747.7119

20th-century warfare, no singular “miraculous event” has captured the imagination of the entire world as this one. To this very day, it remains a towering mystery.

Amidst a most terrifying landscape of relentless bloodshed and unspeakable horror, a totally unexpected, unexplained moment of peace and goodwill would, suddenly, overshadow the evil deeds of deadly enemies who, just moments before, were at each other’s throat.

The unfolding of this most unlikely event are replayed countless times by contemporary historians who still hold seminars, author books, and write theories all in search of a rational answer. But, in the final analysis – they all still remain amazed and befuddled.

Simply put, the so-called Christmas miracle truce of World War I just refuses to be explained – at least by any rational, Earthly standards. Well, as the old saying goes,

“The best place to start is at the beginning.” So, come along with me as we talk to the world’s foremost war historians today and listen to what they have to say. And also read the personal letters and diaries of men in the trenches that day who were first-hand witnesses. But first, let’s all climb on board our Time Machine and travel back 104 years to the year 1914 and the First World War. T HE CHRISTMAS MIRACLE TRUCE. On December 7, 1914, Pope Benedict XV

begged for an official truce between the warring countries, at least during the holy Christmas holidays. In part, the pontiff implored: “That the guns may fall silent at least upon the night the angels sang.” The Pope’s plea was “officially” ignored by the combatant nations involved.

The realities of war had run too deep, and the first-hand experiences of witnessing agonizing death had only hardened the hearts of opposing sides. And strengthened the resolve to seek revenge.

The Germans were attacking France, engaging French and British troops at the Battle of Marne in September of 1914. In the following Battle of the Aisne, the Allied Forces and the Germans fiercely fought with neither sides openly winning, all of which declined into somewhat of a stalemate. As such, opposing forces dug-in with a system of fortified trenches. From deep trenches, war continued. Peering in-and-out of dirt ravines the enemies fought against one another. By November of 1914, there was a continuous “front line” which ran from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier. On both sides of this front line sat opposing

armies, fighting each other – often at close quarters – from deep within their respective bunkers.

MULTIPLE TRUCES, NOT JUST ONE. During these conflicts from dirt trenches, truces would occasionally develop between British and German fighting units, which can be dated as early as November 1914. This was not one single, organized truce running at exactly the same days and along the entire length of the front lines. Quite the contrary. Where there may have been a temporary truce in one particular region, elsewhere along this same front line -- Allied and German soldiers were being killed. SEPARATING MYTH FROM FACT. The ongoing myth that there was one, single giant truce during the Christmas season between warring factions is unanimously disputed by the world’s foremost war scholars. Professor Alan Stanley, author of over 30 historical books and Head of Historical Research from Australia explains: “It wasn’t one truce but a whole series of spontaneous truces.” There is no question that these miraculous truces during the First World War have been tarnished with nostalgic exaggeration. In historical fact, the socalled Miracle Christmas of

Lesson to be learned: The next time Charles gets married, someone should warn the Pope. Advice from the 1950's on how to be the perfect wife:

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. This is a way of letting him know that you have beeen thinking about him and are concerned about his needs. Most men are hungry when they come home and the prospect of a good meal (especially his favorite dish) is part of the warm welcome needed. Prepare yourself. Take 15 minutes to rest so you’ll be refreshed when he arrives. Touch up your make-up, put a ribbon in your hair and be fresh-looking. He has just been with a lot of work-weary people.

Be a little gay and a little more interesting for him. His boring day may need a lift and one of your duties is to provide it.

Clear away the clutter. Make one last trip through the main part of the house just before your husband arrives. Run a dust cloth over the tables.

World War I has been romanticized to the extreme where it barely resembles its true self. The esteemed war historian, Dr. Alan Stanley has never been hesitant in pricking the balloon of historical fantasy. In 2001, the award-winning professor pointed out historical errors in the ABC Television accounts of the Second World War POW camps in Singapore. In the same vein, Prof. Stanley explains the so-called Christmas Day Miracle Truce of 1914 as being overly-exaggerated and hyped beyond recognition. “In some sectors, you couldn’t put your head above the parapet for fear of snipers and artillery fire,” Prof. Stanley says.

However, Dr. Stanley does concede that at other locations along the front lines, the ‘miracle’ did, in fact, begin to unfold. But it was far different as portrayed on TV dramas and countless pageants around the world. It was still a potentially deadly scenario with little or no guarantees. “Indeed, about 80 British soldiers were killed in fighting on Christmas Day,” Professor Stanley says, along this same front line. What actually occurred needed no hype or romanticizing; those moments of miraculous truces stand on their own merits as unprecedented moments of modern warfare.

Over the cooler months of the year you should prepare and light a fire for him to unwind by. Your husband will feel he has reached a haven of rest and order, and it will give you a lift too. After all, catering for his comfort will provide you with immense personal satisfaction.

Minimize all noise. At the time of his arrival, eliminate all noise of the washer, dryer or vacuum. Encourage the children to be quiet. Be happy to see him.

Greet him with a warm smile and show sincerity in your desire to please him.

Listen to him. You may have a dozen important things to tell him, but the moment of his arrival is not the time. Let him talk first - remember, his topics of conversation are more important than yours. Make the evening his. Never complain if he comes home late or goes out to dinner or other places of entertainment without you. Instead, try to understand his world of strain and pressure and his very real need to be at home and relax.

Your goal: To try and make sure your home is a place of peace, order, and tranquility where your husband can renew himself in body and spirit. Don’t greet him with complaints and problems.

ACTUAL LETTERS FROM WWI SOLDIERS THEMSELVES.

British second lieutenant, Bruce Bairnsfather (1887-1959), who served throughout the war, was one soldier who experienced the truce first-hand and the camaraderie which followed after he left the safety of his trench to mingle and talk with the erstwhile deadly German enemy. In a personal homebound letter he wrote: “I wouldn’t have missed that unique and weird Christmas Day for anything. I spotted a German officer, some sort of lieutenant I should think, and being a bit of a collector, I intimated to him that I had taken a fancy to some of his buttons. I brought out my wire clippers and, with a few deft snips, removed a couple of his buttons and put them in my pocket. I then gave him two of mine in exchange.” (Eventually attaining the rank of Captain in the British Regiment, (Charles) Bruce Bairnsfather became a well-established, prominent British cartoonist during World War I with his cartoons published weekly in “The Bystander” magazine.) The entire peaceful ordeal and goodwill towards erstwhile enemies, all taking place on a bloody battlefield still strewn with dead bodies, seemed too much for the human mind to process: “I saw to my amazement, not only a crowd of about 150 British and Germans in front of my lines, but six or seven such crowds (of British and German soldiers) all the way down, extending toward the 8th Division on our right!” (Sir Edward Hulse’s name can be viewed today on the Salisbury War Memorial in Wiltshire, England. UNUSUAL TRUCE EPISODES. The Christmas truce occurred in different sections along the Western Front Lines, on different dates ranging from December 23, 24, and on Christmas day. such reenactments will, no doubt, continue with a ‘life of their own’ as portrayed by numerous movies, fictitious TV dramatizations and pageant plays. One account mentions a British soldier having his hair cut by a pre-war German barber. Another episode recounts a pig roast between enemy camps and organized soccer matches and decorations of Christmas trees. Contrary to popular legend, there is little to confirm such events. As some World War I scholars point out: “The majority of the famous 1914 Christmas Day football matches, it appears, were either third-hand accounts based upon rumors or games that never happened.” One such historian, Dr. Iain Adams of the University of Kent, England, has offered authoritative comment about the First World War truce football activity for newspapers and websites across the world, including the United States, Canada, Pakistan, Poland and Germany.

Dr. Adams believes Christmas truce football matches have been “romanticized” and were not the organized games many believed them to have been, but there may have been a few soldiers that participated in a kickabout. According to Dr. Adams: “In some places I have no doubt at all that they played football on

I suspect what happened in two or three places was the lads would start kicking a can about and someone would have brought a football so in two or three places a real football would have been used.” Adams points to several examples of soldiers describing “football substitutes.” One WWI participant described “a cap-comforter stuffed with straw,” while another soldier explained, “Some of our boys tied up a sandbag and used it as a football.” Other descriptions tell of “made-up footballs” such as a “bully-beef tin.”

FACTUAL ACCOUNTS. The so-called Christmas Miracle Truce was widespread along the front lines (but not universal). Evidence reveals that in many segments along the Western Front lines, hostilities continued without cessation. Sadly, in at least two ‘truce attempts’ soldiers attempting to fraternize with the enemy during the Christmas season by peacefully leaving their trenches unarmed, were shot by opposing sides.

However, a miraculous truce did prevail in widespread fashion involving an estimated 100,000 troops on opposing sides along various routes. In some areas, hostilities returned Christmas Miracle Cont. on Page 5

It was a lucrative business, extending loans to military members. But it was also illegal.

A Carlsbad jewelry store owner learned that when he received a sentence of 90 days in jail and placed on probation for three years for targeting young sailors and Marines with predatory loans to pay for jewelry. Ramil “Randy” Abalkhad, 55, who owned the now-closed Romano’s Jewelers, will also be required to pay restitution to the victims named in the criminal complaint brought by state Attorney General Xavier Becerra and filed in Los Angeles Superior Court. Romano’s, which had stores across the state, and its associated lending company, MBNB Financial Inc., will be required to cancel outstanding debts owed by those same victims.

Abalkhad pleaded guilty in April to felony conspiracy to engage in illegal financing and debt collection practices, according to Becerra’s office. Abalkhad’s wife and co-defendant, 44year-old Melina Abalkhad, and a third defendant, MBNB employee Ramiro Salinas, both pleaded guilty in April to a conspiracy charge, and both were previously sentenced. Melina Abalkhad will be required to complete a misdemeanor diversion program for her role in operating MBNB Financial.

Dramatic Changes in Store for Escondido?

It used to be common for a 4-1 vote with Olga Diaz often being the “1.” That will likely change dramatically now that a largely conservative council has been replaced by a more liberal majority. Votes, when disputed, are more likely to be 3-2 rather than 4-1. A change Councilmember Olga Diaz welcomes.

Issues such as Escondido’s library, sprawl development, budget review, and even marijuana, are likely to have a second look by the new council. Paul “Mac” McNamara, Escondido’s new mayor said, “I’m hopeful you will see a lot more transparency, a lot more feedback from the residents of the city, and a more cooperative dialogue on the challenges facing Escondido.”

McNamara, 65, upset two-term conservative mayor Sam Abed in the November elections, something McNamara said only he and his campaign manager thought was possible. He is joined by new council member Consuelo Martinez, 35, who easily defeated longtime incumbent Ed Gallo in her District 1 election. The two will form a majority voting block with Olga Diaz, the member of the council who has so often been on the losing end of 4-1 votes over the years. “Before,” Diaz, 42, said, “if it was my idea, it was going to get shot down, not because it was a bad idea, but because

Ouch! Just heard from long time pal, John Wilson, who retired from the Escondido as Department Police Lieutenant and then moved to the Modesto area.

Turns out he has property with over 4000 almond or pecan trees (I keep forgetting which all I know is we don’t pronounce the name correctly and John has to constantly correct us). He has been taking down about 50 trees at the rate of 10 per day . . . and that with a bad hand. He injured his hand in a log-splitter and now has to type his email to me with only one paw. That type of injury has to hurt! Big time!

It was John Wilson, in fact, who first invited me to the Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club of Escondido. Our guest speaker that day was Sam Knott, father of Cara Knott, the girl who was murdered on Hiway 15 by a California Highway Patrol officer.

It was the best, most dynamic, dramatic, memorable speech I had ever heard. I remember thinking at the time, “if this is the type of program Kiwanis puts on, I want to be part of it.” I joined the club. That was over 25 years ago . . . and I have John Wilson to thank for inviting me. Sam Knott has passed on now but his memory as the best public speaker I’ve ever heard lingers on.

Recently, however, I heard another public speaker who is a close second. Opal Singleton is a dynamic gal who heads up Million Kids, a

Folks call it an end of an era. On December 13th, Feliccia’s Italian Restaurant in Vista closed after 40 years of business. Reason? Sam and Nina Feliccia simply want to retire and enjoy the good life they worked so hard to attain. Long known as a family restaurant, where customers and staff became like family,

Sam Feliccia, 68, said, “I love this place and I didn’t want to go, but I’m tired,” he said. “What it has really been was 40 years of working 100-hour weeks. “ Both Sam and Nina are second-generation restaurateurs and food industry workers. His father, Frank, ran a produce business in L.A. Her parents ran a restaurant in Whittier. They married in 1977 and moved to Vista a year later to be closer to family.

The restaurant is best known for its Sicilian chicken, its house-cured olives and its signature sandwiches named for Frank, Christina and Gina, as well as the top-selling Sam’s Special, a hot sub made with Capacollo ham, jack cheese and pepperoncinis. The bad news is, events like this happen every day - and thousands of young teenagers are abducted from home, coerced into prostitution (one as young as 12 years old) or as involuntary servants in the fields, in homes, or elsewhere - and they are coerced with drugs, alcohol, repeatedly raped, or beaten into submission. later that same day. And in other places, hostilities stopped until after New Year’s Day. According to the Associated Press, the last surviving male veteran from the Christmas Truce of 1914 was Alfred Anderson who passed away in 2005 at the great age of 109. Only 18-years-old at the time, British Black Watch regiment soldier Anderson recalled: “The eerie sound of silence” when shooting stopped during the Christmas Truce of World War I. He remembers how it all began: “All I heard for two months in the trenches was the hissing, cracking and whining of bullets in flight, machine-gun fire and distant German voices.” Anderson was in a French farmhouse behind the front lines. Then suddenly, it all happened.

“But then, there was a dead silence that next morning, right across the land as far as you could see. We shouted ‘Merry Christmas,’ even though nobody felt merry.” But then it all changed. It was like a miraculous dream when peace and goodwill among men truly prevailed. Anderson recalled British and German troops swapping cigarettes and even singing Christmas carols together. But then, the silence

More on “Conduct Unbeconing”

I must say that your Dave Geary story is really first-rate journalism (even if he is a menace and unpredictably dangerous to society).

My first instinct is you and Evelyn's safety, everything else is secondary. That being said, your piece on Geary is truly journalism at its best and 'news breaking' story at its finest, especially for our community of Escondido! Expertly laid out and explained with detailed documentation and research. If there is a local civic award for such journalism-reporting on local news and community malfeasance -- this is it!! Honestly, I take my hat off to you.

ended. After all, this was war forced upon combatants by respective nations. Anderson sadly reminisced: “The silence ended early in the afternoon and the killing started again. It was a short peace in a terrible war.” Indeed, it was a terrible war, one of the deadliest conflicts in the history of the human race with over 16-million people left dead. Total number of both military and civilian casualties is, of course, much higher.

GENERALS WERE HATED, AS THEY WANTED FIGHTING TO RESUME. The unrehearsed spontaneity of the Christmas Truces begat by ordinary men in savage combat, needs no additional embellishments or passionate exaggeration. The very fact that this humane truce transpired at all, involving an estimated 100,000 combatants, along a most treacherous and deadly terrain spanning 440 miles from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier with France – is in itself, a most fantastic occurrence by any measure. The high commands on both the British and German sides ordered the fighting to resume and called for the peaceful armistice initiated by their own soldiers to abruptly end. As such, the generals on both sides were hated by their respective

Serjeant George Ashurst (18951988), member of the British Army remembered how the generals on both sides of the conflict were hated because they wanted the miraculous Christmas Truce to end: “We got orders that came down the trench, ‘Get back in your trenches, every man!’ The generals behind must’ve seen it (the truce camaraderie between the British and Germans) and got a bit suspicious so what they did, they gave orders for a battery of guns behind us to fire, and a machine gun open-fired and officers fired their revolvers at the Jerries (Jerry or Jerries was a slang for Germans). ‘Course that started the war again. Ooh, we were cursing the generals to hell! We hated the sight of the bloody generals!” (Note: the alternate spelling “serjeant” used at the top of this paragraph (instead of “sergeant”) was used in The Rifles and other units that draw their heritage from the British Light Infantry.) TRENCH BACKGROUND COMMENTARY. 104 years ago, on a cold, miserably wet day leading up to the ‘Miraculous Christmas Truce’ in December of 1914, human conditions were horrible. Trenches were awash with slimey mud creating cakes of soggy mess everywhere. Chuckles Cont. from Page 2

of battle, again silence.

The Marine voice calls out, "One Marine is better than one thousand Taliban."

The enraged Taliban commander musters a thousand fighters and sends them over the dune. Cannon, rocket, and machine gun fire rings out as a huge battle is fought. Then silence.

Then, one wounded Taliban fighter crawls back over the dune and with his dying words tells his commander, "Don't send any more men, it's a trap. There are two of them!" ••••• Just a holiday tip from me . . . for those of you who like Eggs Benedict, I suggest that the next time you have them, try serving them on a chrome plate. I've been told- "There's no plates like chrome for the hollandaise." ••••• Touching..... I was reading an article last night about fathers and sons and memories came flooding back of the time I took my son out for his first drink. Off we went to our local bar, which is only two blocks from the house. I got him a Guiness Stout. He didn't like it – so I drank it. Then I got him an Old Style; he didn't like it either, so I drank it.

Trench-related diseases were rampant. Trench foot was caused by standing in water and mud for long periods of time causing the person to lose blood circulation. In some grisly cases, soldiers’ socks started to grow onto their feet. In severe cases, the soldier’s foot would have to be amputated.

Trench fever was another most unpleasant disease caused by body lice. The lice would live on the soldiers as parasites, causing trench fever which was highly contagious and was passed between soldiers. Aside from fever, severe headaches, and aching muscles, there were also eruptions on the skin in the form of open sores. It was a painful disease that took up to 12 weeks before improvement was noticed. It often struck more than once. Shell shock was a relatively new illness caused by modern day weapons during World War I. It was not a physical, but a mental illness. The constant noise and explosions along with the fear and danger which went along with it, caused soldiers to act strangely and unable to focus and follow commands or perform duties properly. Doctors at the time did not fully understand shell shock. Christmas Miracle Cont. on Page 6

Visibly shaken, Laura stared at the woman's lined face, then at the single flickering candle, then down at her hands. She took a few deep breaths to compose herself and to stop her mind racing. She simply had to know.

She met the Fortune Teller's gaze, steadied her voice and asked, "Will I be acquitted?" For some reason, women tend to like this joke........ ••••• The Cowboy Mind Cowboy: "Give me 3 packets of condoms, please."

Christmas Miracle Cont. from Page 5

Against these miserable and deadly surroundings, there emerged a historic armistice between combatants that unexpectedly arose out of the debris of cold corpses and relentless bloodshed. From this most unlikely God-forsaken “No Man’s Land” where hate and revenge festered to an imaginable evil pitch, somehow – a flower of love and compassion dared blossom. As described by TIME Magazine writer Naina Bajerkal: “On a crisp, clear morning, thousands of British, Belgian, and French soldiers put down their rifles, stepped out of their trenches and spent Christmas mingling with their German enemies along the Western Front. In the 100-plus years since, the event has been seen as a kind of miracle.” There is simply no other way it can be explained. Except “miraculous” in a human arena otherwise completely void of love and compassion.

Pvt. Albert William Moran (1807-1996) of the Second Queens Regiment during the Christmas Truce of World War I said: “It was a beautiful moonlit night, frost on the ground, while almost everywhere; and about seven or eight in the evening there was a lot of commotion in the German trenches and there were these lights – I don’t know what they were. And then then sang ‘Silent Night’ – ‘Stille Nacht’ (Silent Night in German). I shall never forget it. It was one of the highlights of my life. I thought, what a beautiful tune.” Graham Williams of the Fifth London Rifle Brigade was also there and describes it in his own words: “First the Germans would sing one of their carols and then we would sing one of ours, until when we started up ‘O Come, All Ye Faithful’ the Germans immediately joined in singing the same hymn to the Latin words ‘Adeste Fideles.’ And I thought, well, this is really a most extraordinary thing – two nations both singing the same carol in the middle of a war!” The Christmas truce also allowed both sides to bury their dead comrades, whose bodies had lain for weeks on the ground between opposing trenches, known as No Man’s Land.

IT MAY NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN ON THIS SCALE. Historian Taff Gillingham, who has researched military history of the 20th century and has built replica trenches that are now used by TV and film companies, is keen to emphasize the importance of the conflict and the impact it had on world history. Gillingham holds the

staunch opinion that the WWI Christmas truce is particularly noteworthy because he believes it could never happen in any other year. “A year later virtually everyone who had joined the army had joined just to kill Germans, so there’s no appetite for a truce, so it doesn’t happen again,” states Gillingham.

Adding to Gillingham’s assessment of the event not happening again are the newly-installed laws of warfare: In future years, commanding officers cracked down on fraternizing with the enemy, and anyone caught extending the hand of friendship would be sent to a court-martial review board and disciplined. A few months later, many of the troops in the Royal Warwickshire Regiment lost their lives at the Battle of Ypres, when the Germans used poison gas for the first time. Such a deadly and unforgivable weapon would change the face of war. “There would be no other festive armistice; no more sport played across battle lines.” In later years, on Easter of 1915, there were recorded instances of truces between Orthodox troops of opposing sides on the Eastern Front (not on the Western Front). And in December of 1916 and 1917, German overtures to the British for truces were recorded without any success. In some French sectors, singing and an exchange of thrown gifts was occasionally recorded.

But never again will such a miraculous event happen on this scale as it did in 1914, say the most noted authorities on the subject. Just how widespread the “Miracle Truce” was is difficult to assess. The most detailed accepted evaluation was made by Malcolm Brown of Britain’s Imperial War Museums: “The great Christmas ‘miracle truce’ extended along at least twothirds of British-held trench line that scarred southern Belgium.” It involved 100,000 combatants along the Western Front Line spanning 440 miles from the North Sea to the Swiss Frontier with France. By all historical viewpoints, it was a most towering event in the annals of modern warfare, moving even the normally stoic Wall Street Journal to even acquiesce: “What appears from the winter fog and misery is a Christmas story, a fine Christmas story that is, in truth, the most faded and tattered of adjectives: inspiring!”

It has been 104 years since that hallmark Christmas truce. As we move closer to a newborn year of 2019, it is fitting to reflect back on what Benjamin

When you’re out shopping for that last minute gift, or for someone hard to please, don’t forget to take a look at some of the offerings from our locally-owned businesses. From Old Town Temecula and Main Street Fallbrook to historic downtown Escondido, San Marcos, Vista and the communities that surround them, North San Diego and Southwest Riverside Counties are full of one-of-kind shops that offer crafts, antiques, art, and unusual gifts that often simply can’t be found any place else.

Old Town Temecula, once a stagecoach and later a railroad stop, presents a Wild-West atmosphere complete with board walks and false-fronted buildings, combined with modern amenities like craft boutiques, restaurants, breweries, hotels, live entertainment and much more. And of course, the Wine Country is right next door. Like Temecula, downtown Fallbrook dates back to the 1800s, and has a growing arts scene that includes galleries, gift shops, nook restaurants, museums and wineries. And Downtown Escondido, another community with deep roots in the 19th century, features many unique shops, museums, galleries,

She is my business partner and long-time companion; secondly, I appreciate you taking time to write but we did not defame Kiwanis - but were critical of a member of Kiwanis who may, ultimately, harm Kiwanis, both locally and regionally. Friedrich Gomez - The Elusive Jesus

Thank you for the interesting and informative information shared by Frederich Gomez.

Please accept a few comments that might help the article to be even more interesting.

1. Jewish dead WERE kept for one year, after which their bones were interred in small boxes. They were not kept in homes, but in tombs, where the bodies over the year's time. lost flesh. True, no family member was required to wait at or near the tomb. 2. A careful reading of the biblical reference to Mary Magdalene will show that there are two stories closely intersecting. Mention is made of the adulterous woman. THEN remarks appear about Mary. The two women are separate. The Roman Catholic Church allowed the incorrect understanding for a long time, at least partly because the Church did not approve of the widespread devotion to Mary Magdalene. (many "St. Mary's" churches throughout Europe were originally dedicated to Mary Magdalene) The Church wanted all such devotion to be paid to Mother Mary. 3. Reference to Peter as "The Rock" is a casualty of casual translation. The word Jesus called Peter in the oldest translations available is Petras, which means a kind of loose stone or gravel. It is a stark contrast to Petro or "Rock," which must be understood as faith, of the kind by which Peter offered his exclamation. Jesus was saying that Peter was weak, but his faith was strong. And he was saying that he would build his Church on faith, not on Peter. 4. The reference to Psalm 22 is right on! It is a psalm of triumph. All faithful Jewish men worked ceaselessly to memorize all 150 psalms. If a man said the first line, all other Jewish men understood what he was saying. Jesus' cry was a cry of victory. 5. Finally, realize that Jesus was the world's most liberal person, a status he holds to this day. Again, thank you for publishing Mr. Gomez' very informative article.

Sources?

Your paper is usually a paragon of information and news. The organ article, however, was dated and irresponsible. As near as I can tell from the events cited, the article was written in 2010 but there is nothing in it which states that the information is, at best, 8 years old. Reprinting an article that was so dated without any indication of that age or any changes & updates which have occurred since then does not meet the journalistic standard which your readers expect of you. As a side note, I have no interest nor involvement in any of the issues or establishments within the article; I simply think that an article of that age should not have been reprinted. Sincerely, Kevin Smith Valley Center’

Editor’s Note: A fair criticsim. As you will have noted we did cite our sources but updating the data to current levels would have improved the story. Good catch.

Historically Speaking by Tom Morrow

When the commanding general of Hugh’s unit found out he had the man who wrote the hit “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” in his command, he ordered Hugh transferred to a Special Services unit well behind the lines. The general did not want to lose such a national treasure.

Note & Quotes The Song That Saved His Life

One of the most popular songwriters of the “Greatest Generation” was Hugh Martin, who lived out the last two decades of his life in Encinitas, CA. Hugh was a gentle man who wrote the iconic holiday song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. He wrote others, of course, but it was “… Merry Little Christmas” that placed him in the all- time most requested category.

Lyle: The 12/13 Man about Town article really nailed it about Sam Abed's error in the recent election. He was definitely NOT listening to his constituency. I found it easy to vote against him, due to 3 reasons:

It is obvious that no thought was given to the Country Club's residents. It is quite obvious that the only people happy about this deal are the legal beagles, gleefully collecting their legal fees while the rest of us sit around and watch the inactivity while the coyotes and rabbits run amok! Owen R. McCoy, Retired Navy Master Chief Petty Officer. Escondido

“A few days after my transfer, the great German Counter-offensive (‘Battle of the Bulge’) broke out with my old unit being overrun,” he told me. “Kinda ironic and lucky for me wouldn’t you say?”

Each year, “Meet Me In St. Louis” is among the holiday movies played on television. Right up until his death, Hugh continued to receive large royalty checks every year from the playing and selling of his Christmas song. Popular pianist and friend Kevin Cole, who was a frequent long-time friend and visitor to Hugh’s home, told me he could attest to the huge royalty checks Hugh received each year for that one song. “I’ve seen a few of those checks,” Kevin said. “They all were in the six-figure amount.” Hugh Martin died Aug. 11, 2011, at the age of 97. He was a talented, kindly man from Birmingham, Alabama, who was a good friend. I miss him -- we all should miss his talent.

Hizzoner, (former) Mayor Sam

1. The man was either too lazy or high up on his horse to write a weekly article in The Paper to us, the lowly Escondido residents. 2. During the last election, he made it very pointed to be seen at our local church.... ONLY until he had won the election, never to be seen there again since. Granted, I don't attend all the weekend services, I might have missed 3. I may not have all the facts correct, but here's my view..... Sam and his cohorts were happy to grant Michael Schlesinger all the latitude to buy and build multiple houses on the Country Club Golf course, figuring all the increased tax money that could come in to the City. However, when the local population revolted with the ECCHO movement, he realized his mistake and somehow managed to somewhat slow down the steamroller.

“Tom, I was the worst soldier to every don a uniform and carry a rifle … which I had to have help in taking apart to clean.”

Hugh Martin

While Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” continues to be the best-selling holiday song of alltime, it is “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” that, today, remains the most-played and mostrequested holiday song of all time. Hugh’s song is everywhere during the holiday season. It’s used in popular-play music, in advertising, on radio, and television. Hugh wrote the song for the classic film, “Meet Me In St. Louis,” starring Judy Garland and Tom Drake. He wrote all three songs for that movie: “The Trolley Song,” “The Boy Next Door,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” How did it save his life?

It was 1944, at the height of World War II, when Hugh finished the three songs for the film and then joined the U.S. Army. He was a man who was slight in stature and far from any rough and tumble G.I. When the movie came out with Garland singing the song, it was an instant hit. It shot straight to the top of the Hit Parade. By that time, Hugh was in Europe near the front lines in the Ardennes Forest of Belgium.

CHRISTMAS MEANING – The late Frank Imbilli, a retired Oceanside firefighter, attended church every Sunday, but never missed a chance to get in a quip or two for this column. Such was the case at one Christmas mass at St. Mary’s By the Sea Catholic church. “I go early to get my usual seat,” Frank told me. “Weather permitting the celebrating priest is outside, greeting parishioners. As I approached, I could hear that he was asking people a question.” When Frank got up to the priest, he asked: “Frank, what does Christmas mean to you?” Without missing a beat, Frank replied: "It means that Santa Anita opens tomorrow.”

GREAT QUOTES: “How do they know?” – Dorothy Parker, when told President Calvin Coolidge had died. SCAG SEZ: “A table mate who's mind is slipping somewhat of late observed the other day that, ‘if it weren't for Thomas Edison, we'd be watching television by candlelight.’” -- Cecil Scaglione,

Scholarship Money Available for Students Pursuing Higher Education – There is more than $2 Million in Scholarships available for San Diego County students. The San Diego Foundation announced that hundreds of scholarships are available for San Diego students pursuing higher education during the 2019-2020 school year. The San Diego Foundation Common Scholarship Application is available online until February 5, 2019 at 2:00pm (PST). Through one online application, students can access more than $2 million through 100 types of scholarships for the 20192020 academic year, with awards generally ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Awards are granted to four-year universities, two-year colleges, graduate or trade/vocational schools. “Investing in our students is one of the most important ways to build a strong local talent pipeline for our region,” shared Danielle Valenciano, Director of Community Scholarships at The San Diego Foundation. “Today’s students will be the leaders of tomorrow. By supporting them with scholarships we are creating a more inclusive economy and workforce, and building a lifelong connection between San Diego students and the region.” According to research from the Public Policy Institute of California, only a fraction of students in California capable of earning a degree actually do, and students from underserved communities are greatly underrepresented in colleges and universities. The Community Scholarship Program ensures that the cost of college is not a barrier to entry for higher education attainment and career growth. The San Diego Foundation Community Scholarship Program is the largest in the region outside of the university system and provides a variety of scholarships to high school students, current college students, graduate students and adult re-entry students. Since 1997, the program has awarded more than $30 million to thousands of students. The Common Scholarship

DAR December Meeting Speaker’s Topic was “Quilts, Cigars and Murder” - At the December meeting of the Santa Margarita Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution, speaker Gena Philbert-Ortega’s topic was “Quilts, Cigars and Murder”. She had picked up a quilt

top at a local quilt show because she was intrigued with the many names embroidered on it. Gena researches the life and style of women in history. She felt like there was a story to be had. Through her research she found the link was the Fedrich Cigar Factory in Evansville, Indiana. Evansville was heavily settled by German immigrants and cigar making, a huge business in Germany, was a logical business to open here. Women were the primary workers. Cigar making required dexterity, not strength. It required someone with the mental ability of doing repetitive work. The job paid well for women of that time. Some wives even came from Germany first and then brought their husbands over. The ‘murder’ part came in because one of the women had gone on to work for a school and was murdered by a rejected boyfriend. Gena is a fabulous genealogist and a terrific speaker. An honorarium and certificate was presented by First Vice Regent, Laura Horn. Two new members were welcomed at the meeting; Terra Carlson, whose ancestor is Henry Merrill of Massachusetts, and Jacquie Williams, whose ancestor is Aaron Packer of Pennsylvania. The DAR is open to any female 18 years of age or older who is lineally descended from an ancestor who aided the colonists in their fight for independence in the Revolutionary War. It elevates the South Oceanside walkable district as you enjoy a nice clean look from the outside.” Second place: Saint Tropez Bistro & Beyond; new to the community in downtown Oceanside; Judge Dick Bartlett said “The lighting made this location attractive to those driving or walking by, and they also have great pastries to enjoy with the festive decorations.” Third place: Stage and Screen FX, last year’s winner. Judge CJ DiMento said of the downtown Oceanside display, “Stage and Screen FX had a very nice decorative storefront with blow-up characters above their sign and candy cane-wrapped poles. The storefront decoration complements their makeup products and fun gifts for your family.” Thanks go to all the ‘Tis the Season to Shop Local Participating Shops who decorated their storefronts in 2018 and competed for a total of $75 in cash prizes. This event is an annual holiday campaign to support local retail businesses and artisans by encouraging residents and visitors to shop local during the holiday season. The campaign is a partnership between MainStreet Oceanside, Visit Oceanside, City of Oceanside Economic Development, Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, and South Oceanside Business District. The Woodcutter

The story is told, by Max Lucado, of a poor old man in a village who had a beautiful, majestic white horse. Everyone wanted to buy it…even the king, but he refused to sell. One day the horse was missing. “You old fool” the people said. “You could have sold it for any price. You knew it’d be stolen; you should have sold it”. It’s gone and you are cursed with misfortune.

The man said, “Don’t speak so quickly”; say only “the horse isn’t here”. That’s all we know; the rest is judgment. Cursed or not, who knows? Don’t judge!” “We don’t need your philosophy” they said. It’s a curse! The man replied. “All I know is that the horse is gone. Whether a curse or blessing, who can say? We only see a fragment. The people thought “he’s

The man said, “Say only the horse is back with more horses; don’t judge. You don’t know if it’s a blessing or not. You’ve read one page in the book. No one knows. But they knew he was wrong; it was a blessing. The horses could be sold. Now the man had only one son, who began to break the horses. But, he fell and broke his legs. The people said ““You were right… the horses weren’t a blessing but a curse and now you have no help”. “You always judge” he said. Say he broke his legs; blessing or curse – we don’t know. We see in part.

A war ensued and all the sons had to go to battle, except the old man’s. The people cried, knowing their sons would not return. “You were right; his accident was a blessing; he’s with you. Our sons are gone. The man said “you always judge; only say “Our sons had to go to war, and mine didn’t”. No one knows if blessing or a curse; no one is wise; Only God knows.” He was right. We only see a page in the book. God knows.

San Marcos, from the bottom of my heart, thank you for electing me Mayor. I am honored and humbled to represent our great city as its 14th Mayor. I look forward to working with you and our staff to maintain a high quality of life and exceptional city service delivery.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” McNamara Greetings Escondido,

First, I want to thank all those who made the transition and swearing in ceremony for Consuelo, John and myself go so smoothly. It was a memorable event, and the energy in the room was infectious.

This week, I had the opportunity to talk with a number of leaders in the community and city staff. The response has been tremendous and positive. The recurring theme of the discussions was how can we strengthen the relationship and partnership

Thank You for an Incredible Year of Impact from LLS – The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) thanks you for helping them lead the way to cancer cures, and for helping them save lives. LLS achieved a record-breaking year of impact, and it’s because of your support. The 2018 Annual Report for LLS is available through a digital experience that captures the incredible progress they made in the fight against cancer this year. Cancer is a tough opponent, but LLS is tougher. Their track record in accelerating lifesaving treatments is unparalleled, and they champion the most pioneering research to fuel the attack against cancer. They are laser-focused on cures, and relentless in supporting patients and their families throughout their cancer experience to ensure they have access to care. LLS work is advancing breakthroughs for more than 1.3 million Americans living with or in remission from a blood cancer, and importantly, it is helping patients with other cancers and diseases. Nearly 70 years of fighting blood cancers has led LLS to a game changing belief. “Beating cancer is in our blood.” With your support, we are transforming this powerful belief in finding cures into reality for more patients. Stone Soup and Breadsticks Prepared by Kids in the Garden – At a recent Kids in the Garden Class at the Alta Vista Botanical Gardens, a group of young garden visitors gathered around Farmer Jones in the kitchen for a story and a mini feast of homemade soup and breadsticks. They brought garden edibles to share; carrots, broccoli,

between the City and those groups who address the challenges of the city. I am pleased to report that lots of good ideas were proposed and I will discuss them in the coming weeks.

As you can imagine, I am invited to and attend numerous events in the city. I would as space permits like to mention them in this column. This week I went to Escondido’s First United Methodist Church’s Bethlehem Walk. For those who celebrate Christmas and even for those who don’t, it was a great family event. Thank you! potatoes, a bit of cabbage. The young cooks had fun cutting up vegetables to add to the pot. They also measured, mixed and kneaded dough to make breadsticks. Farmer Jones based this Kid’s class activity on the book “Stone Soup”, a classic folk tale set in a small village. Hungry travelers convince villagers to add vegetables to their soup of stones, thus creating a delicious meal for all to enjoy. It is a story about community and the value of sharing and, I might add, how delicious a garden can be. It is a good lesson for any age, across the ages. The soup and bread smelled delightful and the cooks ate vegetables with enthusiasm! Join us for future Kids’ Classes happening on the second Saturday of each month; the next class will be January 12 on “Animal Homes and Garden Habitats”. the City of Vista.

We are fast approaching an end to another successful year in

It is a time that provides us the opportunity to reflect on the projects we, as a City, have accomplished and to focus on future goals. We’ve got a lot going on with the continued investment in our roads, the upcoming renovation of Bub Williamson Park and the construction of our new Pala Vista park, a low unemployment rate, and a beautiful and growing vibrant downtown.

As we move into this holiday season, I look forward to the many community events

Celebrating the Season

celebrated in Vista. This time of the year we give thanks, count our blessings and celebrate a season of giving. During this holiday season, many churches, charities, and civic organizations collect food and toys so those who are having challenges will be able to enjoy the holiday celebration. In our community, it is great to see so many people come together to provide for those who are less fortunate. Thank you to those who have given and continue to give unselfishly by supporting those in need. Have a safe and joyous holiday season and best wishes for a happy and healthy New Year.

Coast Highway Corridor Study

The Coast Highway Corridor Study Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) was released for public review and comment in 2017. Approximately 200 comments were received from the public and government agencies. In response to the comments received, City staff and the project team have reanalyzed and revised sections of the DEIR. The revised sections of the DEIR are being recirculated for public review and comment through

Monday, January 14, 2019. An electronic copy of the Partially Recirculated DEIR can be found on the City of Oceanside website/project webpage. Hard copies can be found at the Civic Center Library (330 N. Coast Highway) or at the Development Services Department at City Hall (300 N. Coast Highway). The Coast Highway Corridor study evaluates several major changes to the City’s main corridor. These include development incentives and roadway diets. Publlic comments are encouraged.

Win 10 users, get ready

Windows 10 “updates” are like “Global Warming.” You know it’s coming, you have no idea how it will affect you, and there’s no way to stop it. Microsoft’s release of Redstone 5 (Build 1809) began in October but they aborted it twice because “bugs” erased or overwrote data files. “Now it’s ready” they say, and here it comes. This is the sixth major “update” since 2015. Each one is, in reality, a completely new operating system (OS). That means that Redstone 5 is really “Windows 16.” Sometime in the coming weeks, just when you least expect it, Redstone 5 will creep into your Win 10 PC and

Man About Town Cont. from Page 4 or granddaughter.

And it’s not just girls who are exploited. Another story was told where a beautiful girl (with photos to prove it) made contact with a young teenage boy, established a rapport vie Facebook and email - which soon led to intimate discussion. Then the woman asked the young boy to send her a photo of himself, nude. After all, she said, she had already sent a photo of herself in the nude. The boy complied. was hooked!

And he

Turns out the “beautiful woman” was not a woman at all but a 35 year old guy. He now began to demand more photos of the teenage boy. He would also demand the boy meet him where, most likely, he was required to submit to homosexual acts - maybe even photographed in the process. All of this was pure and simple blackmail. If the boy did not comply then the “beautiful woman” would email his nude photos to family, friends, busi-

announce its intent to “update.” You can’t run and you can’t hide, your only options are to accept or opt for a four hour delay. When the “upgrade” hits, you’ll hunker down like an Okie in the storm cellar waiting for the tornado to blow over so he can survey the damage. Each of the last five “updates” created havoc among millions of Win 10 users and cost billions in repairs and data recovery. Why does Microsoft deliberately infuriate their customer base with these updates? First because the “updates” are extremely important to Microsoft and second because Microsoft knows that no matter how badly they abuse their user base, there is no viable alternative to Windows for PC users. Microsoft PR boasts that the updates benefit users by adding important features and improving security. The real reason for “updates” is to improve Microsoft’s access to your browsing data.

mercial organizations for use in target marketing to these high yield demographics. These data packages are extremely valuable. In 2017 Google garnered $75 billion in advertising revenue while Microsoft earned only $6 billion. Microsoft wants more. Google has direct access to Internet activity through its dominant Android OS on smart phones. On PCs Google dominates with its popular browser and search engine (Chrome and Google Search). Microsoft has virtually no presence in smart phones and its PC browser and search engine (IE/Edge and Bing) are not popular. Microsoft does have the Windows OS installed on 90% of the World’s PCs. The Windows 10 OS was designed to allow Microsoft to harvest the browsing data from non-Microsoft PC

browsers like Google Chrome and Firefox. Naturally these companies don’t wish to share their valuable data harvest with the Microsoft “spy” so it’s only logical that they would employ countermeasures. Then Microsoft is forced to rework its OS to counter the countermeasures and on it goes. No one knows for sure how much of Microsoft’s “update” activity is a result of the defensive adjustments made by competing browsers but the “updates” seem to contain very little to benefit users. Windows 10’s ability to record, analyze and monetize your Internet browsing is of paramount importance to Microsoft’s business plan. That’s why Microsoft continues to offer the free “upgrade” to Win10 and why Win 10 updates are mandatory, not optional. You may have paid for your Win 10 PC, but Microsoft owns it.

Today most of us do Internet research before we make any major commitment. Looking to buy a new home with a couple of acres for a horse? Planning an African Safari vacation? Thinking about a new car? Researching some worrisome health symptoms? Checking drug prices? Antique hunting? Want to poison your husband, find a new girlfriend, change doctors, lawyers, your job? These and virtually all other activities can be collected, analyzed and converted into packages sold to com-

ness associates - and the fear of being exposed would cause the teenage boy to comply with the demands.

Mr Davis, Just want to comment about the story Mr Gomez did on Jesus. Just like all the stories he did this one is the very best because it deals with so many issues about the Lord. I`m sure your readers, and myself, will have a lot of soul searching after reading the story. God bless you all!

Mr Davis, your story about the human organ industry is a big eye opener. It almost sounds like things that were done in the dark ages and not in 20th and 21st century. I`m worried the immigrants that are at our border right now will be easy picking for the criminals that do the things mentioned in your story. A great story for a movie! While on the subject of organ transplants, I`m reminded of a story that was recently in the national geographic magazine about an 18 year old girl that attempted suicide with a rifle placed under her chin which did not kill her; instead, she blew her entire face off. It`s an amazing story how she waited 3 years for a complete face transplant. You and your readers can get the entire story at natgeo.com/face. /s/ Angelo Caruso San Marcos, CA.

Theodore Roosevelt's ideas on Immigrants and being an AMERICAN in 1907

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American ... There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag ... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English ... And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' Theodore Roosevelt 1907
