New Holiday Light Display “Northern Lights” at CCAE – Something big and bright is coming to the California Center for the Arts, Escondido! On November 23, 2019 at 11:52 AM, Escondido Police and Escondido Fire responded to a vehicle versus bicycle collision in the 1600 block of La Honda Drive, in Escondido. The bicyclist, Kevin Lentz, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the involved vehicle had fled the scene. Through the course of the investigation, Escondido Police Department Traffic Investigators developed information that led to the identification of 41-year-old Jamison Connor as the driver in this collision.
Thursday, November 28th, Thanksgiving Day, at 9:20AM, Connor was taken into custody on a parole warrant and booked into the Vista Detention Facility on various weapons charges, drug charges and
Man About Town The Grand Canyon Adventure
I'm not sure where or when I came up with the idea but it's one of my best ideas ever.
Somehow, I contacted the American River Touring Association and booked a seven day river raft trip down the Colorado River deep within the Grand Canyon.
We flew into Las Vegas where we took a van to the put-in point at Parker Dam, Parker, Arizona. We were told to bring sun tan lotion, a hat (I bought a new safari hat which the wind promptly carted off less than a half hour into the trip), any alcoholic beverages we might want (I think I brought
driving under the influence. These charges stemmed from his arrest and were not related to the Hit and Run collision.
This case remains under investigation and criminal charges for the Hit and Run collision are pending. On November 29, 2019 at 2:04 PM, Escondido Police and Escondido Fire responded to a vehicle collision on Bear Valley Parkway, near the intersection of Encino Dr. in Escondido.
The following information is based on witness statements as well as evidence at the scene. A 20-yearold male was the sole occupant and driver of a white 2012 Ford Focus, traveling north on Bear Valley Parkway. A 40-year-old male was driving a 2017 Ford Explorer, south on Bear Valley Parkway. The Ford Explorer was also occupied by an adult female passenger and an infant child. The Ford Focus was seen traveling north in the left turn lane south of Encino Dr. just prior to colliding head-on with the Ford Explorer. a bottle of red wine) . . . swim suit, one or two changes of clothes and some comfortable walking shoes. Most everything else was provided. We started out on a rather serene stretch of water - but soon hit some level 1 or 2 rapids. Not too bad. Fun, actually. But this is where I lost my brand new Safari hat. The wind came along and just nonchalantly plucked it off my head, dumping it into the Colorado River.
A good portion of the first day was spent cruising on quiet stretches of water, then being doused by rapids ranging anywhere from 2 to 6 (the higher the number the more severe the ride). We kept hearing about Lava Falls and Crystal Rapids . . . and how many people had died while going through those rapids . . . both about 7 or 8 in difficulty. We approached both of them with some trepidation but, as you see, managed to survive.
A Grand Canyon River Trip has to be experienced to truly understand and enjoy. When we put in on the beach around noon time for a lunch break the boatmen/guides do ALL the work. They set up the tables, lay out the silverware, cook the food, serve it up, and do clean up. You don't have to lift a finger. Many of us, however,

The child was properly belted in a child safety seat and appears not to have sustained any injuries. Alcohol and/or drugs are not considered to be a factor in this collision. After 29 years in the Escondido Police Department and serving as its Chief for the past six years, Chief Craig Carter has announced he will retire at the end of this month.
Known as an affable, smiling, individual with a great sense of humor but also as an efficient administrator, Chief Carter leaves the department in good shape, with high morale, and a good standing in the community. See comments in this week’s Man About Town column for more detail. chose to help out during feeding times just because it seemed the right thing to do. Menus varied. You'd wake up bright and early to the smell of bacon and eggs frying . . . at noon, you'd typically have sandwiches, perhaps a salad, at night . . oh, boy! Steaks! Hamburgers! Dutch Oven cooked pineapple upside down cake! These guys were masters at turning out food fit for a King and his court. Being in the canyon, there were no radios, tvs, newspapers, (the Internet was a mere infant at the time) so you'd typically gather around the campfire and about 8:30, maybe 9pm, you'd turn in for the night. You can only look at a campfire and tell stories for so long.
Mornings were a challenge. After breakfast we'd get underway and while in the shade from the canyon we'd freeze our butts off, then we'd come around the bend and the sun hit us full force and we began to swelter. From time to time we'd be allowed to hop off the raft into the Colorado River and cool down; sometimes, even in rapids (though only about a 1 or 2 level) we'd be allowed to let the rapids carry us downriver after we had exited the safety of the raft. We were told to always wear footwear, usually tennis

shoes, keep our feet facing down river so if we hit any rocks we would not be knocked unconscious. These were fun, but a wee bit spooky.
Other times we'd beach the raft and go exploring . . . walking old Indian trails, checking out hieroglyphics, sightseeing. One particular favorite of mine was Havasupai Falls . . . a large waterfall emptying into a basin that formed crystal clear water with the most beautiful aquamarine color I've ever seen. This was also fresh, clean, clear water so we all got a chance to get a good and welcome bath (the Colorado River itself is quite muddy). There were two boatmen and about four or five couples. I remember one older couple (remember when 65 was old?) from Medford, Oregon . . . an Anesthesiologist and his wife from New Mexico . . . and one really big, important, pompous ass from Chicago. Music Men Chorus To Perform Holiday Concert - Tired of running around trying to get ready for the holidays? Need to get in the spirit of the season? Come to the Palomar Pacific Music Men Chorus concert " 'Twas The Night Before Christmas." On Sunday, December 15, the Music Men Chorus will present a 90-minute concert of holiday-themed barbershop harmony songs set to a comic rendition (a parody) of the classic Clement Moore poem. The concert is at 3:00pm at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Avenue, Carlsbad 92008. The performance will feature the full chorus under the direction of David Garstang, several quartets from the chorus, plus the award-winning guest quartet "Behind The Barn." (Some also refer to the New Age as the ‘Age of Aquarius’—the 2,000-year period after the Earth is said to move into the Aquarius sign.)” In the decades between the New Age boom and present day, while astrology certainly didn’t go away - you could still regularly find horoscopes in the back pages of magazines it “went back to being a little bit more in the background,” says Chani Nicholas, an astrologer based in Los Angeles.
“Then there’s something that’s happened in the last five years that’s given it an edginess, a relevance for this time and place, that it hasn’t had for a good 35 years. Millennials have taken to astrology and run with it.”
In the book, “The Stars Down to Earth,” a 1953 publication, argues that astrology appeals to “persons who do not any longer feel they are self-determining subjects of their fate.” The mid-century citizen had been primed to accept ‘magical thinking’ by systems where advances and events happened quickly and one had little control over these happenings. For example, the threat of atomic destruction in seconds, eyepopping television coverage of weather systems, hurricanes
acclaimed for its "ringing" chords. The Music Men perform throughout the year in north San Diego County, singing at community centers, at residential communities, and at private parties and functions. In 2019, they have performed at several civic events including the Escondido Chocolate Festival and the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies sponsored by the Veterans Association of North County. Annually, quartets from the chorus deliver Singing Valentines. The Music Men rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm at the San Marcos Senior Center, 111 Richmar Avenue, San Marcos 92069. DAR Speaker was Brig.Gen. Michael Aguilar - The Santa Margarita Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), were honored to have BrigGen Michael J. Aguilar USMC (ret), as their speaker at a recent meeting. General Aguilar spoke about the Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum at MCAS Miramar. He talked about the development of the Marines Corp Aviation Historical Foundation and Museum whose mission statement is Preserve-HonorInspire. The Aviation Museum, open to the public, has a large collection of planes on the grounds, and spacious rooms inside housing Marine Aviation memorabilia. Today it’s easy to name opaque and almost incomprehensible situations that make this alienation ever greater - surveillance cameras on every corner, the absolute destruction of large cities almost overnight in some ‘small’ war, the abduction and murder of large numbers of high school and college students that authorities cannot or will not find; a byzantine health insurance system that treats the rich more fairly than the poor: mass shootings at concerts, churches and schools – all cause one to feel a lack of self-determination more greatly, leading to the desire to know and control the future. Thus it is easy to see the gathering of astrology believers, or those who wish to learn more, numbering a thousand or more at many locations on the East and West Coast. Fueling the growth behind astrology is those who seek to learn more, to put a ‘why’ behind the ‘what.’ Unlike religion, astrology says to a great degree, that we are the way we are because we were born that way - the fault is in the stars - so to speak. The power of language in a star chart can be formidable, making it easier for people to accept, and admit, to the unpleasant aspects of their personality. The friend who

A blogger stated that the astrology vocabulary can be used to ‘skate’ real issues as in, ‘I’m going through my Saturn return. I’m reckoning with restrictions and limits and boundaries right now.’ It might be easier just to say, ‘I’m not attracted to you.’ Simple, but that statement doesn’t have the impact or ‘membership’ pizzazz that astrology jargon

After viewing the Pala Casino website, we all gave it two thumbs up! What a truly magnificent Las Vegas-like paradise Pala Casino turned out to be! Their waterfalls in their spacious swimming pool area and places to eat all made us promise to come back! It's huge there, with so much to see and experience, including entertainment! Our favorite restaurants so far (because we plan to go back!) were the exotic "Poolside Cafe & Bar" and in the evening we dined at the gorgeous "Oak Room."

Astrology may not provide that, but it does give practitioners a way to examine their reactions and viewpoints regarding potential actions and situations before they act, i.e., the ability to look at a problem or issue from a distance instead of submerging oneself in the actual problem.” Chani Nicholas, the Los Angeles astrologist says, “To be human is to suffer. Many astrology instructors – sometimes called translatorsread and dissect the charts of famous people as a way to teach important trends and ‘tells.’ Fox New contributor, Tucker Carlson is such a favorite, as is New York representative, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and English Prime Minister Boris Johnson. According to his chart, Carlson has difficulty in determining truth elements when faced with a number of choices; Cortez’s reading shows – sorry Conservatives – that she’ll be in the public eye for some time and in a position of prominence. Boris Johnson? He’s prone to exaggeration and may have spurts of intense activity followed by periods of inactivity where he licks his wounds and harbors thoughts of revenge. Other famous people whose star charts are popular are Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs. Both had their chart cast when they were in their twenties. Bezos seems to have been underwhelmed with his reading. According to his friends, he read it and put it away. Yes, it showed he was a creative problem solver and well organized, and while these traits were imperative to his future success, he seems to not have dwelled on them. Steve Jobs had his chart framed and referred to it regularly in work or in conversations. A character trait mentioned he could become ‘prick-

Ortlee explains that people and events come into the news because the movement of the planets through the sky, known as transits, activate their charts. This works on many levels, she says, and points out that “When the Titanic sank, there was a huge Neptune transit, and when the movie came out many years later, there was a repeat of that huge transit.” One way to deal with uncertainty is to demand certainty. Another way is to learn to dwell in uncertainty, to find beauty and solace in what is, and must be, unknown. For some people, the complex astrology system itself is a source of pleasure. There’s much to learn – rules to master, vocabulary to memorize, charts to dissect and examine. For others, astrology allows for different interpretations of certain facts. As the planets transit, they move into different signs, picking up different meanings.
In one context, Uranus indicates sudden death, in another reading, a revolutionary surge of energy. In this metaphor of life, astrology seems to say that for most of us all we can do is endure doubt, to not look for meaning or answers, but give in to the state in which we find ourselves. Relax and enjoy the tour so to speak. Still, there are others who say that one must find meaning in one’s journey. Some philosophers say that life requires thinking and to understand our role in the future. Uber does not give free rides. IHOP expects payment for their pancakes. The Vietnam War was still going on but for seven glorious days we didn't see or hear anything about our young lads being killed and maimed for life; no presidential politics. Just enjoying the great outdoors. No tv or radio. (The boatmen had a satellite phone in case of emergency. They were able to call in a helicopter for evacuation if necessary). One evening in particular has stayed with me to this day. One of our group, a young lad by name of Ernest Shaw, was a sales rep for Swissair. We were all gathered around the campfire at night when he said he had an announcement to make. "Today is my birthday and to celebrate my birthday I'd like to present to you a gift. To do this, I'd like you all to just stay here by the fire and be quiet . . . my gift will come very soon." And with that he strolled off into the black darkness, up the canyon . . . and soon his powerful voice echoed off the walls of the Grand Canyon as he sang an aria from "Aida." I never cared much for opera but that night I got goose bumps as I heard him sing. Even now, as I write this, I get goosebumps. And this happened sometime in the mid 70's, 47-48 years ago! At my age I'm not sure I'd be up to a repeat trip to the Canyon. Exciting, fun, demanding, tiring - not too hard for a 35 year old . . . but I'm probably a bit past my prime. Still, I have some great memories.

Mixed emotions at the news that Craig Carter, Escondido’s Chief of Police for the past six years, is retiring after 29 years with the Escondido Police Department. Craig was a member of our Hidden Valley Kiwanis Club and was scheduled to become president . . . then two beautiful girls from North County were murdered and Craig became the Public Information Officer, keeping the media posted on these and other crimes. He simply did not have the time to become president. He did a fine job as PIO and rose through the ranks rather quickly, promoted to Captain and then Chief. He’s done a great job as Chief and I’m sorry to see him leave

The ‘Commodore’ at the Helm
This is about one of the six great industrialists who created the backbone of American industry. These six were largely responsible for building our nation, which enabled America to lead the world in industrial power.
One of the first was a central figure in creating the system for moving everything from people to raw materials to finished product was the man who built the nation’s railroad network: Cornelius Vanderbilt.
Vanderbilt spawned one of America’s first influential and powerful industrial families throughout the 19th and into the 21th centuries. Cornelius “The as known Vanderbilt, Commodore,” was America’s first multi-millionaire shipping and railroad magnate as well as a philanthropist who built his enormous wealth in railroads and shipping. Among the Commodore’s many accomplishments, he is known for owning or controlling a number of railroads including the New York Central Railroad, the builder of New York City’s Grand Central Station, and for providing the initial gift to found Vanderbilt University in Nashville.
Born poor on May 27, 1794, Vanderbilt had only a mediocre education. He used perseverance, intelligence, and luck to work his way into leadership positions in the inland water trade and invest in the rapidly growing railroad industry.
According to historian H. Roger Grant: “Contemporaries often hated or feared Vanderbilt or at least considered him While brute. unmannered an Vanderbilt could be a rascal, combative and cunning, he was much more a builder than a wrecker ... being honorable, shrewd, and hard-working.”
Vanderbilt brought his eldest son Billy in as vice-president of the Harlem Railroad. Billy had had a nervous breakdown early in life and his father had sent him to a farm on Staten Island. But he proved himself a good businessman, and eventually became the head of the Staten Island Railway. Though the Commodore had once
scorned Billy, he was impressed by his son's success. Eventually he promoted him to operational manager of all his railroad lines. In 1864, the Commodore sold the last of his ships in order to concentrate on the railroads. Cornelius Vanderbilt died at the age of 82, on Jan. 4, 1877, at his residence, No. 10 Washington Place, after having been confined to his rooms for about eight months. The immediate cause of his death was exhaustion, brought on by long suffering from a complication of chronic disorders. Vanderbilt had a fortune estimated at $100 million. In his will, he left 95 percent of his $100 million estate to his son William (Billy) and to William's four sons ($5 million to Cornelius, and $2 million apiece to William, Frederick, and George). The Commodore said that he believed William was the only heir capable of maintaining the business empire. Commodore Vanderbilt willed amounts ranging from $250,000 to $500,000 to each of his daughters. His wife received $500,000, their New York City home, and 2,000 shares of common stock in the New York Central Railroad. To his younger surviving son, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, whom he regarded as lazy with no ambition, the Commodore left the income from a $200,000 trust fund. The Commodore had lived in relative modesty considering his nearly unlimited means, splurging only on race horses. His descendants were the ones who built the Vanderbilt houses that characterize America's Gilded Age. (Although his daughters and Cornelius received bequests much smaller than those of their brothers, these made them very wealthy by the standards of 1877 and were not subject to inheritance tax.)
According to The Wealthy 100 by Michael Klepper and Robert Gunther, Vanderbilt would be worth $143 billion in 2007 United States dollars. This would make him the second-wealthiest person in United States history, after Standard Oil co-founder John Davison Rockefeller. Another calculation, from 1998, puts Vanderbilt in third place, after steel magnet Andrew Carnegie.
Cornelius Vanderbilt was buried in the family vault in the Moravian Cemetery at New Dorp on Staten Island. He was later reburied in a tomb in the same cemetery constructed by his son Billy. Three of his daughters and son, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, contested the will on the grounds that their father was of unsound mind and under the influence of his son Billy and of spiritualists whom he consulted on a regular basis. The Commodore’s name continues to this day. A living descendant is his great-great-granddaughter Gloria Vanderbilt, a renowned fashion designer. Her youngest son is Anderson Cooper, a CNN television news anchor. A Joyful Thanksgiving
For about the third or fourth year in a row we chose to enjoy our Thanksgiving meal at Charlies, the iconic restaurant in Escondido. Why?

As usual, we had the turkey, stuffing, potatoe (baked), green beans, freshly brewed coffee, and a delicious soup. I had Charlie’s famous Bean Soup, Mary, my ex-wife, had Turkey Noodle. The Bean Soup was, as usual, superb . . . but Mary’s Turkey Noodle soup looked so good I ordered a bowl of it togo. Next? The service.
Charlie’s is famous for its prompt and coureoous service.
Over the years I’ve come to know all of the wait staff, the cashiers, the owner, the owner’s family . . . and many of its patrons. It’s just one big happy family at Charlie’s.
(So sorry to learn that Eva, Charlie’s wife of many years, recently had a compound fracture of a leg. She was rushed to the hospital, patched up, and is now recovery at a Rehab Center. Charlie and Susie spent a number of evenings sleeping in the same room as Eva, making sure she was comfortable and always having someone to talk to and to see to
her comfort. She is recovering and we are looking forward to seeing her back at Charlie’s). Finally?

We really need Christmas! Where would we be without Christmas? We would probably be a Dicken’s Scrooge. We have so much more. Think of all the lights that brighten the holiday – on fence rows, house eves, yard trees, and the thousands of homes with decorated trees. Yes, the tree! We need to capture our childhood experience of a tree in our home. We keep up the tradition by buying, even cutting our own tree, and setting it up. It helps keep us alert, as we try to remember where we stored all the ornaments last year. It is a joy to get all of our favorite ornaments and hang them on the tree. And then, we stand back to admire our handiwork. Possibly even more important, we can have others visit us to admire our tree. Of course, under the tree are the gifts and presents. Where would our economy be without Christmas, the gift purchases, wrappings, and Santa Claus, the magical deliverer? Add to all of
this, the surprised reaction of those who unwrap the gifts with wide eyes and exclamations. Christmas would be worth it just for that experience. This isn’t all. It includes the family and friends gathering for a special meal with the finest china and silverware. The entire season would be void without the traditional Christmas music of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Silent Night.” With that, Christmas provides a social contact with “Merry Christmas”, and an opportunity to be generous with a gift in the Salvation Army Pot with the bell ringer. We need Christmas. Now, of course, where would we be without the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus? We hear that story, at least this time of the year. The ultimate is the clarion call and song of the angels to the shepherds near Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth, “Fear not, for I bring you good news of a great joy, which shall be to all the people, for unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.”

The holidays are here again, and everyone is invited to join us for two fun and festive events in the City of San Marcos!
First up is our annual Tree Lighting event on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 1- 7 p.m. at the San Marcos Civic Center, where you can enjoy free crafts and activities, as well as vendors selling their wares and snacks. Next is an exciting new event called Breakfast with Santa. Bring the whole family to the San Marcos Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 7:30-11 am. to enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa, and the chance to make festive crafts and play carnival games. The cost is $5 per person. We hope you come out to have some fun with family and friends and connect with others in our beautiful community during this wonderful time of year.

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. I attended the Escondido Together Thanksgiving service on Tuesday of that week and really loved it. It was held at the CCAE. Escondido Together did just a great job helping one reflect on what we should be grateful for.
Now back to the budget discussion. Remember the shortfall over the years will affect the budget ranging from 10-15%. When the Public Safety portion is 66% with little fat to trim, we have to look at the remaining 34% to find the 10-15%. The services that would need to be cut would put us in a downward spiral that would take years to get out of. There is some good news, however. We did a poll asking if the community would support a 1 cent sales tax. The overwhelming majority said yes. What that does is give us the money to pay the debt that was ignored and some extra money to do some community improvements. Obviously, this will go to a vote but I think it is the least painful solution. Semper Fi,

10th Annual Romp Gala Raises Nearly $600,000 to Support Families with a Hospitalized Child - Contributions from the 10th annual ROMP gala and Hoehn Motors Luxury Car Raffle raised $600,000 in net proceeds for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego, which provides supportive services for families with a critically ill or injured child in a local hospital. Gala attendees enjoyed an enchanted evening! ROMP Enchanted: The Magic of Hope, held on October 12 at The Fairmont Grand Del Mar, invited more than 400 guests to “follow the path” to a magical gardeninspired evening. Funds from ROMP will help strengthen families with a hospitalized child and bolster their psychological wellbeing by keeping families close and providing the care they need. The event featured cocktail hour, silent auction, musical entertainment by NRG Music & Productions, gourmet food by The Fairmont Grand Del Mar, multiple enchanted acrobat performances, a live auction, and paddle raise. During the evening, various donors committed more than $388,400 during the Fund a Family portion of the program, providing vital funds for families to stay at our San Diego Ronald McDonald House. Keeping Safe During the Holidays

In addition, the Vista Fire Department is reminding residents to be careful if they are displaying Christmas trees. Even flame-retardant trees are capable of burning explosively and spreading fire through a home quickly. The following tips will help keep everyone safe during the holidays.
• Look for freshness with cut trees. • If buying an artificial tree, choose a fire resistant type. • After cutting the base off the fresh tree, set the cut end into water immediately and fill often. • Keep the tree away from fireplaces, direct sunlight and heat sources. • Decorate trees safely with UL-approved miniature lights to prevent heat buildup. • Inspect used lights for frayed wires or signs of wear. Discard if damaged. • Turn off or unplug tree and exterior lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

On January 14, after over ten years of support, Microsoft will end support for Win7. Without Microsoft’s regular security updates, banks, businesses, Email services, social media and other Internet sites will start to deny access to Win7 users. Application software updates will no longer run on Win7 and hackers will begin to exploit the hidden holes.

Yep, I’m writing this column with my nine year old PC. It has a dual core Athlon CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB solid state drive (SSD). My PC surfs the WWW as fast as any four thousand dollar Gamer PC, provides instant Email response Email and runs the Word, Excel and Power Point programs and files I use every day. Unless you are doing something with your computer that can actually benefit from a superfast CPU and gobs of memory, it doesn’t do you any good to have it. It doesn’t make much sense to pay for something that doesn’t help you. That’s why you need to bring your old PC to us before you decide to chuck it and go get a new one. Usually your old PC can be upgraded to provide a better solution than a new PC at a fraction of the cost. This evaluation costs nothing. If you really do need a new Win 10 PC we have plenty of alternatives refurbished and new and we can transfer your old files and probably even give you a trade in on your old PC.
