The president was facing a tough decision that could change the course of the Cold War. He had a reputation as a decision fact-based fast, maker, who consulted his many resources before deciding on a course of action. He’d reviewed satellite images so clear they could measure the circumference of a fifty-ruble coin on the streets of Moscow; he’d talked to multiple intelligence agencies and sought The Paper - 760.747.7119

advice from his Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense and other Cabinet members. He’d weighed the pros and cons of his decision with the Joint Chiefs of Staff and consulted with his vice president. With no room for error, he weighed the advice of the leading minds in his administration, read the latest position papers and made one last call. He phoned his astrologist.

According to Don Regan, who served as Chief of Staff to President Ronald Reagan for three years, the 40th president of the United States went through this process before every major action of his presidency, from timing his reelection announcement to disarmament negotiations with Russian leader, Mikhail

President Reagan was not the only American president to use astrology while in the White House. In his 2005 book, “The Fated Sky,” historian Benson Bobrick writes that President Theodore Roosevelt kept his birth chart on a table in his living quarters. Nor was Teddy alone. . Yale history Professor Truzzi, noted that President Franklin D. Roosevelt often quoted horoscopes in Cabinet meetings

and in speaking with friends.

Many other world leaders were known for their interest in astrology: France’s Charles de Gaulle and Francois Mitterrand often reviewed their horoscope before ordering certain actions. How about the British? World War II Royal Navy officer and statesman Louis Mountbatten - uncle to Prince Phillip, husband of Queen Elizabeth - and General Bernard “Mounty” Montgomery, often consulted astrologists according to their biographers. In fact, it’s said General Montgomery delayed joining American troops in North Africa until his astrology chart gave a favorable reading. “The idea at the heart of astrology,” according to author Bobrick, “is that the pattern of a person’s life – or character, or nature - corresponds to the planetary pattern at the moment of his or her birth. Such an idea is as old as the earth is old, that all things bear the imprint of the moment they are born,” Western astrology had its origins in Mesopotamia, spreading throughout Egypt, Greece, the Roman Empire and Islamic world BCE 300. “Astrology helped people decide when to

Would he ascend the throne?” (According to Bobrick, astrologer Theogenes cast Augustus’ birth chart while the future Rome Emperor was quite young. On seeing the results of this reading the astrologist gasped and threw himself at Augustus’ feet.)

Perhaps figuring out who would be king is not as important today as it was during the Roman Empire. Entrepreneur Ted Turner had his birth chart cast several weeks before he purchased the Atlanta Braves baseball team. “It showed I’d experience success for years to come, that my hard work would continue to bring positive results. But, does a guy who’s won an America’s Cup racing yachts, started a popular TV network and became a multi-millionaire after beginning life in humble circumstances need to know this when he’s fixing to buy a baseball team? Hell, no. What he needs is advice on how to hire a good manager and get some damn good ball players.” Did Ted’s astrology read out disclose that his Braves, led by

As the saying goes, the rest is history. Zig Ziglar went on to change the lives of many, including the writer of this article, with his powerful and specific motivational talks. “Little Town of Bethlehem” Presented at FUMC - The First United Methodist Church of Escondido will host the 32nd recreation of the “Little Town of Bethlehem” December 13-15, a renowned holiday tradition where visitors can experience the excitement and joy of the first Christmas! “Bethlehem Walk shares the story of Christmas,” said Rev. William deBos, pastor of FUMC Escondido. “Local churches of different denominations help us build and staff the ‘city.’ We all come together to share the joy of Christmas and its message of peace and goodwill for all of the Earth.” Last year, over 1800 people attended Bethlehem Walk, strolling through the masterfully staged open areas of the church. Live artisans, shopkeepers, shepherds, Jewish families, Roman centurions and prophets present a living picture of Bethlehem in the time of Caesar Augustus, the Roman Emperor who decreed that a census be taken, setting in motion the pivotal event of Christendom, the birth of

Each horoscope sign belongs to one of 4 elements – Air, Fire, Water and Earth - which represent an essential type of energy that acts in each of us. Astrology aims to focus these energies on the positive aspects and to reveal a better understanding of our potential and positive traits so we can better deal with our negative characteristic. Water Signs

So what is astrology? According to Wicki-Leaks, “Astrology is a pseudoscience that claims to divine information about human affairs and terrestrial events by studying the movements and relative positions of celestial objects.”

Water sign people are exceptionally emotional and ultrasensitive. They are highly intuitive and may be as mysterious as the ocean itself. Water signs love profound conversations and intimacy. They rarely do anything openly and are always there to support their loved ones. Water Signs are: Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces.

It may be helpful to know there are twelve zodiac signs, and each sign has its own strengths and weaknesses, its own specific traits, desires and attitude towards life and people. By analyzing the projection of the position of planets and the Sun and the Moon on the Ecliptic at the moment of birth, astrology can give us a

By reading the stars, so to speak, daily horoscopes are generated and printed in many newspapers and on-line publications. The bicyclist, Kevin Lentz, suffered multiple traumatic injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the involved vehicle had fled the scene. Through the course of the investigation, Escondido Police Department Traffic Investigators developed information that led to the identification of 41-year-old Jamison Connor as the driver in this collision.

Man About Town The Grand Canyon Adventure

I'm not sure where or when I came up with the idea but it's one of my best ideas ever.

Somehow, I contacted the American River Touring Association and booked a seven day river raft trip down the Colorado River deep within the Grand Canyon.

We flew into Las Vegas where we took a van to the put-in point at Parker Dam, Parker, Arizona. We were told to bring sun tan lotion, a hat (I bought a new safari hat which the wind promptly carted off less than a half hour into the trip), any alcoholic beverages we might want (I think I brought

Escondido: Serious Injury Accident

On November 29, 2019 at 2:04 PM, Escondido Police and Escondido Fire responded to a vehicle collision on Bear Valley Parkway, near the intersection of Encino Dr. in Escondido.

The following information is based on witness statements as well as evidence at the scene. A 20-yearold male was the sole occupant and driver of a white 2012 Ford Focus, traveling north on Bear Valley Parkway. A 40-year-old male was driving a 2017 Ford Explorer, south on Bear Valley Parkway. The Ford Explorer was also occupied by an adult female passenger and an infant child. The Ford Focus was seen traveling north in the left turn lane south of Encino Dr. just prior to colliding head-on with the Ford Explorer. a bottle of red wine) . . . swim suit, one or two changes of clothes and some comfortable walking shoes. Most everything else was provided. We started out on a rather serene stretch of water - but soon hit some level 1 or 2 rapids. Not too bad. Fun, actually. But this is where I lost my brand new Safari hat. The wind came along and just nonchalantly plucked it off my head, dumping it into the Colorado River.

A good portion of the first day was spent cruising on quiet stretches of water, then being doused by rapids ranging anywhere from 2 to 6 (the higher the number the more severe the ride). We kept hearing about Lava Falls and Crystal Rapids . . . and how many people had died while going through those rapids . . . both about 7 or 8 in difficulty. We approached both of them with some trepidation but, as you see, managed to survive.

A Grand Canyon River Trip has to be experienced to truly understand and enjoy. When we put in on the beach around noon time for a lunch break the boatmen/guides do ALL the work. They set up the tables, lay out the silverware, cook the food, serve it up, and do clean up. You don't have to lift a finger. Many of us, however,

Both drivers and passengers were transported by the Escondido Fire Department to Palomar Medical Center. The driver of the Ford Focus suffered serious injuries and is in critical condition. The driver and passenger of the Ford Explorer suffered serious injuries but are in stable condition. The child was properly belted in a child safety seat and appears not to have sustained any injuries. Alcohol and/or drugs are not considered to be a factor in this collision. The cause of this collision is under investigation by Officer Steven Braucht of the Escondido Police Department Traffic Division. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is encouraged to contact Officer Braucht at (760) 8394482. Escondido Chief of Police, Craig Carter, to Retire this Month

You'd wake up bright and early to the smell of bacon and eggs frying . . . at noon, you'd typically have sandwiches, perhaps a salad, at night . . oh, boy! Steaks! Hamburgers! Dutch Oven cooked pineapple upside down cake! These guys were masters at turning out food fit for a King and his court. Being in the canyon, there were no radios, tvs, newspapers, (the Internet was a mere infant at the time) so you'd typically gather around the campfire and about 8:30, maybe 9pm, you'd turn in for the night. You can only look at a campfire and tell stories for so long.

Mornings were a challenge. After breakfast we'd get underway and while in the shade from the canyon we'd freeze our butts off, then we'd come around the bend and the sun hit us full force and we began to swelter. From time to time we'd be allowed to hop off the raft into the Colorado River and cool down; sometimes, even in rapids (though only about a 1 or 2 level) we'd be allowed to let the rapids carry us downriver after we had exited the safety of the raft. Other times we'd beach the raft and go exploring . . . walking old Indian trails, checking out hieroglyphics, sightseeing. One particular favorite of mine was Havasupai Falls . . . a large waterfall emptying into a basin that formed crystal clear water with the most beautiful aquamarine color I've ever seen. This was also fresh, clean, clear water so we all got a chance to get a good and welcome bath (the Colorado River itself is quite muddy). There were two boatmen and about four or five couples. I remember one older couple (remember when 65 was old?) from Medford, Oregon . . . an Anesthesiologist and his wife from New Mexico . . . and one really big, important, pompous ass from Chicago. Music Men Chorus To Perform Holiday Concert - Tired of running around trying to get ready for the holidays? Need to get in the spirit of the season? Come to the Palomar Pacific Music Men Chorus concert " 'Twas The Night Before Christmas." On Sunday, December 15, the Music Men Chorus will present a 90-minute concert of holiday-themed barbershop harmony songs set to a comic rendition (a parody) of the classic Clement Moore poem. The concert is at 3:00pm at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 2020 Chestnut Avenue, Carlsbad 92008. The performance will feature the full chorus under the direction of David Garstang, several quartets from the chorus, plus the award-winning guest quartet "Behind The Barn." Donations to the chorus would be appreciated (suggested amount $10). Now in their 66th year, the Music Men are the North County chapter of the international Barbershop Harmony Society, which is dedicated to the preservation and performance of the unique four-part, a cappella style of singing known as Barbershop,

helping of the zodiac. (Some also refer to the New Age as the ‘Age of Aquarius’—the 2,000-year period after the Earth is said to move into the Aquarius sign.)” In the decades between the New Age boom and present day, while astrology certainly didn’t go away - you could still regularly find horoscopes in the back pages of magazines it “went back to being a little bit more in the background,” says Chani Nicholas, an astrologer based in Los Angeles.

“Then there’s something that’s happened in the last five years that’s given it an edginess, a relevance for this time and place, that it hasn’t had for a good 35 years. Millennials have taken to astrology and run with it.”

In the book, “The Stars Down to Earth,” a 1953 publication, argues that astrology appeals to “persons who do not any longer feel they are self-determining subjects of their fate.” The mid-century citizen had been primed to accept ‘magical thinking’ by systems where advances and events happened quickly and one had little control over these happenings. For example, the threat of atomic destruction in seconds, eyepopping television coverage of weather systems, hurricanes

The Music Men perform throughout the year in north San Diego County, singing at community centers, at residential communities, and at private parties and functions. In 2019, they have performed at several civic events including the Escondido Chocolate Festival and the Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies sponsored by the Veterans Association of North County. Annually, quartets from the chorus deliver Singing Valentines. The Music Men rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm at the San Marcos Senior Center, 111 Richmar Avenue, San Marcos 92069. Men high school age and older are welcome to attend rehearsals to learn more about Barbershop singing. For additional information about the chorus, visit www.musicmenchorus.org.

Today it’s easy to name opaque and almost incomprehensible situations that make this alienation ever greater - surveillance cameras on every corner, the absolute destruction of large cities almost overnight in some ‘small’ war, the abduction and murder of large numbers of high school and college students that authorities cannot or will not find; a byzantine health insurance system that treats the rich more fairly than the poor: mass shootings at concerts, churches and schools – all cause one to feel a lack of self-determination more greatly, leading to the desire to know and control the future. Thus it is easy to see the gathering of astrology believers, or those who wish to learn more, numbering a thousand or more at many locations on the East and West Coast. Fueling the growth behind astrology is those who seek to learn more, to put a ‘why’ behind the ‘what.’ Unlike religion, astrology says to a great degree, that we are the way we are because we were born that way - the fault is in the stars - so to speak. The power of language in a star chart can be formidable, making it easier for people to accept, and admit, to the unpleasant aspects of their personality. The friend who

As one writer put it, “Astrology is kind of like the peanut butter you slip the heartworm pill in before giving it to your Golden Retriever. If you tell someone, ‘You’re such a spot light hog!’ they may want to slap you. But if you say, ‘You’re a Leo, and love to be the center of attention,’ they’re like, ‘Yeah baby that’s me.”

The stigma attached to astrology still exists, but not to the degree of years past. Those who gather for a chart reading today are more likely to be young people dressed for work or a casual dinner. In the past it was middle-aged ladies wearing muumuus emblazoned with stars, wearing flip flops and calling everyone dearie.

A blogger stated that the astrology vocabulary can be used to ‘skate’ real issues as in, ‘I’m going through my Saturn return. I’m reckoning with restrictions and limits and boundaries right now.’ It might be easier just to say, ‘I’m not attracted to you.’ Simple, but that statement doesn’t have the impact or ‘membership’ pizzazz that astrology jargon

Park thing in past visits so that was out. Then, we saw the Pala Casino ad in The Paper and -- Presto! -- like magic, our problems were solved!

After viewing the Pala Casino website, we all gave it two thumbs up! What a truly magnificent Las Vegas-like paradise Pala Casino turned out to be! Their waterfalls in their spacious swimming pool area and places to eat all made us promise to come back! It's huge there, with so much to see and experience, including entertainment! Our favorite restaurants so far (because we plan to go back!) were the exotic "Poolside Cafe & Bar" and in the evening we dined at the gorgeous "Oak Room."

We just love your cover stories and that's how we unexpectedly found out about the Pala Casino in their ad with you! Your weekly cover stories continue to astound me at how your writer Friedrick Gomez keeps coming up with these wildly-exciting cover story ideas! How does he do it? Mr. Gomez ran the bases with his intriguing "When Pastors Lose Their Faith" cover story (Nov. 14, 2019) and then his current "The Rat Pack, Dean, Sammy & Frank" (Nov. 28, 2019). By the way, that's another reason we cannot live without your weekly paper. Because we're now planning to see the Rat Pack Show at the Pala Events stage!

When our friends return to their homes back east, now they're gonna have plenty to talk about! We love The Paper each and every week. And now we love Pala Casino too! I can't wait to see this tribute show. My mom, dad and I saw Sammy Davis, Jr. in the 1964 Broadway play called "Golden Boy" with Paula Wayne and the songs they sang were so emotional it made us cry in the audience. We love the old era stars like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin and the old Perry Como Show and his show lyrics "I'm on my way to the stars!" They don't make 'em like that anymore, trust me.

Mr. Lyle E. Davis, thank you for The Paper. And thank you for giving us your writer, Friedrick Gomez. He's wonderful! Such a beautiful Native American! -- from the huge Patrick Flannigan Irish Clan, friends, and relatives, Social Butterfly Cont. on Page 9

has.”

However, most astrology authorities say that using your birth sign as an excuse for rude behavior is a no-no. “As a Scorpio you may be stubborn, but that does not give you the right to insist something be done your way particularly if your way has been tried and found wanting.” It’s true that in today’s uncertain world we crave certainty. Astrology may not provide that, but it does give practitioners a way to examine their reactions and viewpoints regarding potential actions and situations before they act, i.e., the ability to look at a problem or issue from a distance instead of submerging oneself in the actual problem.” Chani Nicholas, the Los Angeles astrologist says, “To be human is to suffer. I don’t feel we should challenge or fight that, but we have no reason to dwell forever on that fact.” She adds that looking at your chart is a personal revelation. “In some ways, it is kind of like looking at yourself naked.”

Many astrology instructors – sometimes called translatorsread and dissect the charts of famous people as a way to teach important trends and ‘tells.’ Fox New contributor, Tucker Carlson is such a favorite, as is New York representative, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, and English Prime Minister Boris Johnson. According to his chart, Carlson has difficulty in determining truth elements when faced with a number of choices; Cortez’s reading shows – sorry Conservatives – that she’ll be in the public eye for some time and in a position of prominence. Boris Johnson? He’s prone to exaggeration and may have spurts of intense activity followed by periods of inactivity where he licks his wounds and harbors thoughts of revenge. Other famous people whose star charts are popular are Jeff Bezos and Steve Jobs. Both had their chart cast when they were in their twenties. Bezos seems to have been underwhelmed with his reading. According to his friends, he read it and put it away. Yes, it showed he was a creative problem solver and well organized, and while these traits were imperative to his future success, he seems to not have dwelled on them. Steve Jobs had his chart framed and referred to it regularly in work or in conversations. A character trait mentioned he could become ‘prick-

Does the State Owe You Money?

We’re entering the holiday season, and many people could use a little extra cash. You might be interested to know that California is sitting on unclaimed properties valued at over $9 billion. Please visit claimit.ca.gov to see if any of that money belongs to you. Why does California have so much unclaimed property? Under our Unclaimed Property Law, businesses like banks and insurance companies are required to transfer property to the Controller’s office if it goes unclaimed for a specified period of time, usually three years. Common types of unclaimed property are bank accounts, stocks, bonds, uncashed checks, insurance benefits, wages, and the contents of safe deposit boxes. Funds are held for as long as it takes to reunite the property with its rightful owner, which explains why the pot keeps growing.

Checking to see if you have unclaimed funds is easy. Once you access the website, simply type in your name and see if you’re listed. If it looks like you have some funds coming to you, you can file a claim immediately if the value is less than $5,000. Higher amounts require you to mail a form and takes longer to process. Those who worked with him closely say he often said, “I don’t want to be prickly, but. . . “ Astrologist Guler of New York says, “Many people today are really operating from the belief that technology is doing something weird to our brains. Astrology gives one the chance to fight back so to speak. It gives a concrete message, that is particularly appealing to the younger generation.”

Several astrology buffs pointed out that astrology really hit big in the Jeffery Epstein case. Many groups read his star chart as part of their instruction. According to those in the know, Epstein had his sun in Aquarius and his moon in Aries, so he was used to having his own way. Venus, which rules love, money and pleasure, and Mars which rules action, desire and war, were in Pisces, which suggests trouble with boundaries and possible addiction issues. Anne Ortlee, is a New York astrology instructor with twelve years’ experience. “His Mercury-Uranus-Venus-Mars configuration represents sex with young children – Mercury is young children, Mars is sex.” Ortlee adds, “This a guy who’s not going to do well in prison.

“His self-love and inability to see, even mask, or re-picture, his mistakes, makes it hard for him to admit or concede any wrongs. In his way of thinking, he’s right and those who don’t agree are wrong. But, if somehow the prosecution were able to draw a vivid picture of hopelessness and destitution in his mind that clearly created a picture that all is lost, so to speak, what little faith he has may crash and . . . who knows.” Is that clear?

Ortlee also points out on Instagram that turbulent times are coming in the impeachment hearings. Why? Because when Nancy Pelosi announced the inquiry into Donald Trump’s action only minutes before “Mercury was sextiling Jupiter, promising information and news that we should all pay attention to.” And to disturb my conservative friends even further, when Brett Kavanaugh was sworn into the Supreme Court, in

October 2018, this event had been interspliced by two eclipses in July. Kavanaugh was, Ortlee’s quote, not mine, “An evil Aquarius.”

Ortlee explains that people and events come into the news because the movement of the planets through the sky, known as transits, activate their charts. This works on many levels, she says, and points out that “When the Titanic sank, there was a huge Neptune transit, and when the movie came out many years later, there was a repeat of that huge transit.” One way to deal with uncertainty is to demand certainty. Another way is to learn to dwell in uncertainty, to find beauty and solace in what is, and must be, unknown. For some people, the complex astrology system itself is a source of pleasure. There’s much to learn – rules to master, vocabulary to memorize, charts to dissect and examine. For others, astrology allows for different interpretations of certain facts. As the planets transit, they move into different signs, picking up different meanings.

In one context, Uranus indicates sudden death, in another reading, a revolutionary surge of energy. In this metaphor of life, astrology seems to say that for most of us all we can do is endure doubt, to not look for meaning or answers, but give in to the state in which we find ourselves. Relax and enjoy the tour so to speak. Still, there are others who say that one must find meaning in one’s journey. Some philosophers say that life requires thinking and to understand our role in the future. Uber does not give free rides. IHOP expects payment for their pancakes. But according to some realists, when we learn to think, we learn to live. I’m in that camp. How about you? Interested in Pursuing Astrology? Here’s a Checklist of Where to Look

us. Mary and me. We had the time of our lives. One of the best holidays ever.

The Vietnam War was still going on but for seven glorious days we didn't see or hear anything about our young lads being killed and maimed for life; no presidential politics. Just enjoying the great outdoors. No tv or radio. (The boatmen had a satellite phone in case of emergency. They were able to call in a helicopter for evacuation if necessary). One evening in particular has stayed with me to this day. One of our group, a young lad by name of Ernest Shaw, was a sales rep for Swissair. We were all gathered around the campfire at night when he said he had an announcement to make. "Today is my birthday and to celebrate my birthday I'd like to present to you a gift. To do this, I'd like you all to just stay here by the fire and be quiet . . . my gift will come very soon." And with that he strolled off into the black darkness, up the canyon . . . and soon his powerful voice echoed off the walls of the Grand Canyon as he sang an aria from "Aida." I never cared much for opera but that night I got goose bumps as I heard him sing. Even now, as I write this, I get goosebumps. And this happened sometime in the mid 70's, 47-48 years ago! At my age I'm not sure I'd be up to a repeat trip to the Canyon. Exciting, fun, demanding, tiring - not too hard for a 35 year old . . . but I'm probably a bit past my prime. Still, I have some great memories.

The ‘Commodore’ at the Helm

This is about one of the six great industrialists who created the backbone of American industry. These six were largely responsible for building our nation, which enabled America to lead the world in industrial power.

One of the first was a central figure in creating the system for moving everything from people to raw materials to finished product was the man who built the nation’s railroad network: Cornelius Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt spawned one of America’s first influential and powerful industrial families throughout the 19th and into the 21th centuries. Cornelius “The as known Vanderbilt, Commodore,” was America’s first multi-millionaire shipping and railroad magnate as well as a philanthropist who built his enormous wealth in railroads and shipping. Among the Commodore’s many accomplishments, he is known for owning or controlling a number of railroads including the New York Central Railroad, the builder of New York City’s Grand Central Station, and for providing the initial gift to found Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

Born poor on May 27, 1794, Vanderbilt had only a mediocre education. He used perseverance, intelligence, and luck to work his way into leadership positions in the inland water trade and invest in the rapidly growing railroad industry.

According to historian H. Roger Grant: “Contemporaries often hated or feared Vanderbilt or at least considered him While brute. unmannered an Vanderbilt could be a rascal, combative and cunning, he was much more a builder than a wrecker ... being honorable, shrewd, and hard-working.”

Vanderbilt brought his eldest son Billy in as vice-president of the Harlem Railroad. Billy had had a nervous breakdown early in life and his father had sent him to a farm on Staten Island. But he proved himself a good businessman, and eventually became the head of the Staten Island Railway. Though the Commodore had once

scorned Billy, he was impressed by his son's success. Eventually he promoted him to operational manager of all his railroad lines. In 1864, the Commodore sold the last of his ships in order to concentrate on the railroads. Cornelius Vanderbilt died at the age of 82, on Jan. 4, 1877, at his residence, No. 10 Washington Place, after having been confined to his rooms for about eight months. The immediate cause of his death was exhaustion, brought on by long suffering from a complication of chronic disorders. Vanderbilt had a fortune estimated at $100 million. In his will, he left 95 percent of his $100 million estate to his son William (Billy) and to William's four sons ($5 million to Cornelius, and $2 million apiece to William, Frederick, and George). The Commodore said that he believed William was the only heir capable of maintaining the business empire. Commodore Vanderbilt willed amounts ranging from $250,000 to $500,000 to each of his daughters. His wife received $500,000, their New York City home, and 2,000 shares of common stock in the New York Central Railroad. To his younger surviving son, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, whom he regarded as lazy with no ambition, the Commodore left the income from a $200,000 trust fund. The Commodore had lived in relative modesty considering his nearly unlimited means, splurging only on race horses. His descendants were the ones who built the Vanderbilt houses that characterize America's Gilded Age. (Although his daughters and Cornelius received bequests much smaller than those of their brothers, these made them very wealthy by the standards of 1877 and were not subject to inheritance tax.)

According to The Wealthy 100 by Michael Klepper and Robert Gunther, Vanderbilt would be worth $143 billion in 2007 United States dollars. This would make him the second-wealthiest person in United States history, after Standard Oil co-founder John Davison Rockefeller. Another calculation, from 1998, puts Vanderbilt in third place, after steel magnet Andrew Carnegie.

Cornelius Vanderbilt was buried in the family vault in the Moravian Cemetery at New Dorp on Staten Island. He was later reburied in a tomb in the same cemetery constructed by his son Billy. Three of his daughters and son, Cornelius Jeremiah Vanderbilt, contested the will on the grounds that their father was of unsound mind and under the influence of his son Billy and of spiritualists whom he consulted on a regular basis. The Commodore’s name continues to this day. A living descendant is his great-great-granddaughter Gloria Vanderbilt, a renowned fashion designer. Her youngest son is Anderson Cooper, a CNN television news anchor. Through Billy's daughter Emily Thorn Vanderbilt, another great-great grandson is a TV actor: Timothy Olyphant, (“Deadwood” and “Justified.”) SCAG SEZ: “It seems that the less a man knows, the easier it is to convince himself that he knows it all.” – Cecil Scaglione, Mature Life Features.

but am also pleased for him to take an early retirement while he is young enough to enjoy well deserved times with his family and/or to pursue other opportunities in the corporate world.

Of Chief Carter, City Manager Jeff Epp said ... “Craig has been extremely solid in steering the department down a course that focuses on fighting crime, focuses on law enforcement, and does not focus on immigration. He’s been very focused on keeping the community safe, which is what it’s all about.” “In looking back, being involved in the decision to hire him as chief of police, I think, was one of the better moments in my career,” Epp said.

“He’s a very likable guy, and he’s very high energy. He’s also the kind of guy that likes to get problems resolved right away. If something significant came up that needed attention, he was all over it.” Among other things, Epp said, Carter’s support of the community-oriented policing team has helped greatly in dealing with the city’s homeless issues.” Craig Carter is a good man.

He will be missed.

A Joyful Thanksgiving

For about the third or fourth year in a row we chose to enjoy our Thanksgiving meal at Charlies, the iconic restaurant in Escondido. Why?

A number of reasons.

WE DELIVER!

We are family. Charlie and his family have been adopted by us and we, apparently, by them.

When we walk in it’s like old home week. Great big smiles, warm hugs, and a happy atmosphere. Next?

The food is outstanding!

As usual, we had the turkey, stuffing, potatoe (baked), green beans, freshly brewed coffee, and a delicious soup. I had Charlie’s famous Bean Soup, Mary, my ex-wife, had Turkey Noodle. The Bean Soup was, as usual, superb . . . but Mary’s Turkey Noodle soup looked so good I ordered a bowl of it togo. Next? The service.

Charlie’s is famous for its prompt and coureoous service.

Over the years I’ve come to know all of the wait staff, the cashiers, the owner, the owner’s family . . . and many of its patrons. It’s just one big happy family at Charlie’s.

(So sorry to learn that Eva, Charlie’s wife of many years, recently had a compound fracture of a leg. She was rushed to the hospital, patched up, and is now recovery at a Rehab Center. Charlie and Susie spent a number of evenings sleeping in the same room as Eva, making sure she was comfortable and always having someone to talk to and to see to

her comfort. She is recovering and we are looking forward to seeing her back at Charlie’s). Finally?

Consistency.

It was running buckets on Thanksgiving Day and we though that possibly Charlie’s would not be packed . . . as is the custom on a holiday. Nope. The place was packed with familiar faces. Patrons who had learned over the years

My husband and I always read your section on The Paper. We wanted to thank you for publishing Wayne's opinion this week, it was Volume 49No. 47, November 21, 2019.

We are glad you are not afraid of the PC Patrol that intimidates many people. We need to be fearless and be able to tell the truth at all times. The PC police is trying to kill our Freedom of Speech, that is a communist tactic and it works very well in Communist countries around the world, but last time I checked, we are still in a free country, "The United States of America." Keep up the good work and thank you very much, /s/John and Ana Simmers North San Diego County More Thanks

Select members of the Chorale will sing special numbers and the RB Chorale dancers always dazzle the audience. The RB Chorale’s foundation is show tunes, and this December will be no different as there will be several popular songs from film and stage that celebrate this most magical of seasons. There will be songs to celebrate Hanukkah as well as our signature patriotic salute to the military. A visit by Santa Claus is expected and he always has a little treat for the children. Proceeds from ticket sales help fund the RB Chorale’s Scholarship Program. The RB Chorale’s threefold mission is to bring the gift of song to the community,

We’ve all had our ups and downs, some bumps in the road, so to speak, but we’ve somehow managed to keep going and, surprisingly, things always eem to work out. Here’s hoping that the upcoming year, 2020, will be a genuinely happy New Year for you and your family and that you enjoy more good health and prsoperity than ever before.

As an added bonus, we got to see Sabrina . . . the phenomenally beautiful daugher of Susie and Bill Meleka, Charlie’s daughter and son-inlaw, respectively.

I’ve known Sabrina since she was a small child. I’ve watched her grow . . . and grow more and more beautiful each time I see her.

This year is winding down rapidly. Thanksgiving is now behind us and Christmas is just weeks away - and then comes the new year. The brand new year - which one hopes is a bit more pleasant than this last year.

Holiday Drive; Help Save Twice the Animals – The 2019 Holiday Drive to Save Lives at the San Diego Humane Society is in full steam. Give hope to homeless and abused animals this season. No animal deserves to suffer, but there are still thousands of homeless cats and dogs in our community who need our help this holiday season. We need friends like you to give animals like Remi hope. Remi was relying on humans to take care of him and treat him with kindness. But instead, Remi was left starving and abandoned in an orange grove in Escondido. When our humane law enforcement officers found him, Remi was so weak he couldn’t even walk. He was dehydrated, suffering from hypothermia and extremely malnourished. But we wouldn’t give up hope. Thanks to the support of friends like you, our veterinarians spent months giving Remi the help he needed. And every day, Remi grew stronger. As he gained weight and began walking on his own, the light returned to Remi’s eyes. After nearly three months, he had transformed into a playful, energetic young dog. When you give to the 2019 Holiday Drive to Save Lives, you’ll help thousands more animals like Remi. Your gift truly will give hope to homeless and abused animals this holiday season. Best of all, thanks to a generous $200,000 match from the Resource Partners Foundation, gifts received by December 31 will be doubled to save twice as many animals in need. was a whopping success. We are amazed by the community’s response to our PAWS Food Drive. The totals are in, and together we collected more than 9,000 pounds of pet food, which will provide 46,500 meals for pet families in need. Thanks to the support from friends like you, pet families with limited financial resources will be able to keep their beloved animals happy, healthy and well-fed – not just during the holiday season, but throughout the year ahead. On behalf of the thousands of people and pets whose lives are being touched by these gifts, THANK YOU! What is PAWS San Diego? He will talk about the history of the Salvation Army, what they do, and their challenges today. An Historical Note: The Red Kettle that is a Salvation Army Christmas tradition was first used in San Francisco in 1891. Come and hear what all the accomplishments have been from all those coins and bills that we and our grandparents placed in those kettles. We really need Christmas! Where would we be without Christmas? We would probably be a Dicken’s Scrooge. We have so much more. Think of all the lights that brighten the holiday – on fence rows, house eves, yard trees, and the thousands of homes with decorated trees. Yes, the tree! We need to capture our childhood experience of a tree in our home. We keep up the tradition by buying, even cutting our own tree, and setting it up. It helps keep us alert, as we try to remember where we stored all the ornaments last year. It is a joy to get all of our favorite ornaments and hang them on the tree. And then, we stand back to admire our handiwork. Possibly even more important, we can have others visit us to admire our tree. Of course, under the tree are the gifts and presents. Where would our economy be without Christmas, the gift purchases, wrappings, and Santa Claus, the magical deliverer? Add to all of

this, the surprised reaction of those who unwrap the gifts with wide eyes and exclamations. Christmas would be worth it just for that experience. This isn’t all. It includes the family and friends gathering for a special meal with the finest china and silverware. The entire season would be void without the traditional Christmas music of “Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer” and “Silent Night.” With that, Christmas provides a social contact with “Merry Christmas”, and an opportunity to be generous with a gift in the Salvation Army Pot with the bell ringer. We need Christmas. Now, of course, where would we be without the Christmas story of the birth of Jesus? We hear that story, at least this time of the year. The ultimate is the clarion call and song of the angels to the shepherds near Bethlehem on the night of Jesus’ birth, “Fear not, for I bring you good news of a great joy, which shall be to all the people, for unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior who is Christ the Lord.”

Yes, we need Christmas, we really need Christmas for all it offers. Enjoy it! Pastor Huls

A Weekly Message from the Mayor of Your Community published in the belief that it is important for elected leaders to communicate with their constituents and that constituents have a means of hearing from their elected leaders.

San Marcos • Mayor Rebecca Jones Celebrate the Holidays in San Marcos

The holidays are here again, and everyone is invited to join us for two fun and festive events in the City of San Marcos!

First up is our annual Tree Lighting event on Saturday, Dec. 7 from 1- 7 p.m. at the San Marcos Civic Center, where you can enjoy free crafts and activities, as well as vendors selling their wares and snacks. Next is an exciting new event called Breakfast with Santa. Bring the whole family to the San Marcos Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 7:30-11 am. to enjoy a pancake breakfast with Santa, and the chance to make festive crafts and play carnival games. The cost is $5 per person. We hope you come out to have some fun with family and friends and connect with others in our beautiful community during this wonderful time of year.

Escondido • Mayor Paul “Mac” Mcnamara Greetings Escondido,

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday. I attended the Escondido Together Thanksgiving service on Tuesday of that week and really loved it. It was held at the CCAE. Escondido Together did just a great job helping one reflect on what we should be grateful for.

Now back to the budget discussion. Remember the shortfall over the years will affect the budget ranging from 10-15%. When the Public Safety portion is 66% with little fat to trim, we have to look at the remaining 34% to find the 10-15%. The services that would need to be cut would put us in a downward spiral that would take years to get out of. There is some good news, however. We did a poll asking if the community would support a 1 cent sales tax. The overwhelming majority said yes. What that does is give us the money to pay the debt that was ignored and some extra money to do some community improvements. Obviously, this will go to a vote but I think it is the least painful solution. Semper Fi,

Keeping Safe During the Holidays

Planning on going away for the holidays? Call the Vista Sheriff’s Senior Patrol for a vacation home check at 760. 940.4434. The Senior Patrol will drive by and check your home while you’re away. In addition, the Vista Fire Department is reminding residents to be careful if they are displaying Christmas trees. Even flame-retardant trees are capable of burning explosively and spreading fire through a home quickly. The following tips will help keep everyone safe during the holidays.

• Look for freshness with cut trees. • If buying an artificial tree, choose a fire resistant type. • After cutting the base off the fresh tree, set the cut end into water immediately and fill often. • Keep the tree away from fireplaces, direct sunlight and heat sources. • Decorate trees safely with UL-approved miniature lights to prevent heat buildup. • Inspect used lights for frayed wires or signs of wear. Discard if damaged. • Turn off or unplug tree and exterior lights before leaving the house or going to bed.

addition, Paul Cianci of Cypress, CA was announced as the grand prize winner of the ninth annual Hoehn Motors Luxury Car Raffle, which offered the choice of one of three luxury car packages or $75,000 cash. The grand prize was graciously donated by Bill and Susan Hoehn and Hoehn Motors Carlsbad.

The 10th Annual ROMP also celebrated the successful conclusion of the House’s “More Than a Meal” campaign which was launched at ROMP 2018. The JMS Fund along with the Joseph A.W. Clayes III Charitable Trust were recognized for their leadership matching gifts to the campaign that funded the complete renovation of the Joseph Clayes III Great Room at the House. These two gifts generated $1 million in matching gifts. The Clayes Trust match also created the Joseph Clayes III Meal Program Endowment. This new endowment will ensure support of the Ronald McDonald House meal program for years to come. All together the ‘More Than a Meal’ campaign raised $2.5 million dollars by more than 1,000 donors. The event sponsors included Nancy Stanley and Family as the title sponsor, Hoehn Carlsbad as the underwriter for the Luxury Car Raffle, and Sky Zone San Marcos as the program sponsor. Additional sponsors included Lisa and Karl Betyar, Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, City National Bank, NuFace, and The GEO Group Foundation, Inc.

Windows 7 users have two choices. Either buy a Win10 PC or upgrade existing PCs to Win10. At The Computer Factory we can help you with either choice but the most cost effective solution is usually the upgrade route. Next week we upgrade my Win7 PC to Win10.

Windows 7’s funeral; 30 days left

There are 100,000 of us living here in the great city of San Marcos, Ca. Between our businesses and homes we own 40,000 Windows PCs (desktops and notebooks). 10,000 of them (including this one) are still running Win7. On January 14, after over ten years of support, Microsoft will end support for Win7. Without Microsoft’s regular security updates, banks, businesses, Email services, social media and other Internet sites will start to deny access to Win7 users. Application software updates will no longer run on Win7 and hackers will begin to exploit the hidden holes.

Andy Rooney and His Prayer:

I don't believe in Santa Claus, but I'm not going to sue somebody for singing a Ho-Ho-Ho song in December. I don't agree with Darwin, but I didn't go out and hire a lawyer when my high school teacher taught his Theory of Evolution.

Yep, I’m writing this column with my nine year old PC. It has a dual core Athlon CPU, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB solid state drive (SSD). My PC surfs the WWW as fast as any four thousand dollar Gamer PC, provides instant Email response Email and runs the Word, Excel and Power Point programs and files I use every day. Unless you are doing something with your computer that can actually benefit from a superfast CPU and gobs of memory, it doesn’t do you any good to have it. It doesn’t make much sense to pay for something that doesn’t help you. That’s why you need to bring your old PC to us before you decide to chuck it and go get a new one. Usually your old PC can be upgraded to provide a better solution than a new PC at a fraction of the cost. This evaluation costs nothing. If you really do need a new Win 10 PC we have plenty of alternatives refurbished and new and we can transfer your old files and probably even give you a trade in on your old PC. At The Computer Factory, upgrades from Win7 to 10 costs between $120 and $165 depend-

If I went to a football game in Jerusalem, I would expect to hear a Jewish prayer. If I went to a soccer game in Baghdad, I would expect to hear a Muslim prayer.

If I went to a ping pong match in China, I would expect to hear someone pray to Buddha.

Life, liberty or your pursuit of happiness will not be endangered because someone says a 30-second prayer before a football game. So what's the big deal? It's not like somebody is up there reading the entire Book of Acts. They're just talking to a God they believe in and asking Him to grant safety to the players on the field and the fans going home from the game.

“But it's a Christian prayer” some will argue. Yes, and this is the United States of America, founded on Christian principles. According to our very own phone book, Christian churches outnumber all others better than 200-to-1. So what would you expect -- somebody chanting Hare Krishna?

And I wouldn't be offended. It wouldn't bother me one bit. When in Rome ......

If you do happen to be a power user that needs a super fast custom designed PC for gaming, design, modeling or video editing, you’ve just found a home.

“But what about the atheists?” is another argument. What about them? Nobody is asking them to be baptized. We're not going to pass the collection plate. Just humor us for 30 seconds. Unfortunately, one or two will make that call. One or two will tell thousands what they can and cannot do. I don't think a short prayer at a football game is going to shake the world's foundations.

Christians are just sick and tired of turning the other cheek while our courts strip us of all our rights. Our parents and grandparents taught us to pray before eating, to pray before we go to sleep. Our Bible tells us to pray without ceasing. Now a hand-
