Vista • Mayor Judy Ritter

Vista’s Growing Coffee Scene

Something’s brewing in Vista, and our city is becoming increasingly caffeinated with a growing coffee scene.

While other areas of North County have long been known for their strong culture of shops and roasters, new, upcoming, and seasoned coffee shops with a twist are growing the culture in Vista.

Steel Mill Coffee and the soon to be opened Archer’s Arrow, both on Main Street, and Cat and Craft cat café in the Business Park have all made their homes in the city and are bringing new flavor notes to the growing scene. Also based in downtown is Brewed Vista, which is known for its gourmet coffee and craft beers. Downtown’s VistaisOpen.com provides self-guided tour podcasts and you can click the audio on their website to listen to the self-guided tours while taking in all of what our unique and vibrant downtown has to offer!

and present little known narratives such as "The Final Phone Calls to Loved Ones During 9/11." Or America's only emperor (Emperor Norton), or declassified inside trivia on the "Cuban Missile Crisis." Even your declassified data on "Nazi Germany's Race to Produce the World's First Atom Bomb & Stealth Technology" was shocking and illuminatiing for all of us! And I agree with other Letters to the Editor that your brilliant writer Friedrich Gomez is not afraid to critique CRT, WOKE, Cancel Culture, the Race Card, Radical Political Correctness, and even reverse White prejudice which has wrongly cost countless innocent jobs merely because people were not aware of proper terminology!

All of my coworkers, friends, online acquaintances, all of us, are damned proud of the owner/publisher of The Paper, Lyle E. Davis for giving us Americans something rare, fresh, and opinions which much of America today are just too damned scared to say out loud! Lyle, we not only love you but we NEED you!

From Another Writer

Publishers are humans, too. The old joke, who asked Mary Todd Lincoln,"Other than the shooting Mrs. Lincoln, how did you like the play?" Answer. The playwright.

Yes, we writers are ego driven, though most would not agree that is true. We all love to get compliments on our work. A natural and healthy desire. In your case you have a fine line to walk selecting the writer, the topic and giving the writer the freedom to say what has to be said. An exacting task. When all this comes to fruition and resonates with a reader who takes the time to actually write to you, by all means strut. Most of us get far too few accolades for what we do. Also, some say that for everyone who took the time to write, 10 others had the same thought. Bust the buttons on your shirt. Smile. Smile. Smile. Ain't life grand?. /s/ Pete Peterson, Escondido, CA. Greetings Escondido,

A City’s role in general is to provide services that add to the Quality of Life of its residents. The quality of those services help define the profile and reputation of the city. And as we all know, the better we can make them, the more desirable the city becomes to live, work, play and invest.

The city doesn’t do this alone, other entities both public and private contribute to the overall reputation. Entities like the school districts, or the Chamber of Commerce have an impact. Recently our Chamber of Commerce hosted a wellreceived Green Energy Expo that served among other things to show our interest in being good stewards of the land.

A city’s role also includes the mandate to create opportunities for business growth and development. Our staff recently announced the initiation of a Business Incubator concept with a focus on AgTech. A lot of prep work went into this in and out of the city. The University of California showed a lot of interest in, and support of the concept. It will be the first one in Southern California. The city will be hosting an AgTech Startup Hackathon Event on October 21st through the 23rd. Keep an eye out on the City’s Website for details in registering. It is open to everyone.

Stay informed, Be Kind, Remember your neighbor, and Stay safe!

to be done. Would love to see, in person, that always smiling Dr. Greg Hurt! His staff always have great smiles and attitudes. They are an absolute delight! •••• SANDAG is at it again. Lying.

5th District Supervisor Jim Desmond can’t be quite as blunt as your irascible, grumpy old editor. But I can and did say it.

I don’t trust SANDAG. They’ve lied to us before and diverted funds that should have come to North San Diego County. And now it appears they have lied again - lying by omission of information is just as bad as a bald faced lie.

I’m beginning to think it’s time to start buying buckets of tar and big bundles of feathers . . . and letting SANDAG know, in no uncertain terms, how the people feel about their underhanded ways.

Supervisor Desmond had this to say.

lyle --

SANDAG has been told by the State of California that they should include the per-mile tax or possibly come up with a new transportation plan. The Board of Directors has urged them to remove the per-mile tax, yet the entire $162.5 billion plan relies on the ability to charge people for every mile they drive, demonstrating how completely out of touch SANDAG is to the challenges and needs of San Diegans.

It’s time for SANDAG to come back to the table and find a suitable plan birds, migrants, and wintering guests. Starting promptly at 8am to get the most out of our early morning birding hours, the group searches out the greatest number of bird species in our native and ornamental gardens. All those interested in birding, beginner to expert, are invited to attend. Free to SDBG members.

Thursday, September 8 is San Diego Gives Day. Your favorite, nonprofit organizations “join paws” and ask you to support local programs. Your money stays here.

Rancho Coastal Humane Society President Judi Sanzo says, “San Diego Gives is an opportunity to highlight the tremendous work of all the amazing nonprofits here in San Diego County. So, whether it’s animals, arts and culture, environment or education, there’s a cause for everyone.”

How do you know which organizations will use your donation wisely?

However, it wasn’t until September 17th, 1787, that this fledgling country became the United States of America with the signing of the Constitution. It wasn’t until the Constitution was written and adopted as the law of the land that this country, these people, would become one. In 1955 the Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned Congress to set aside a week in September to honor the United States Constitution, and in so doing, to garner public attention, to encourage the study, and thus, the understanding of and respect for the law of the land. Public Law 91 was signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaiming September 17-23 as Constitution Week in America. This annual event honors the legacy of our patriot ancestors, their willingness to give everything for the sake of independence. Honoring our Constitution and its legacy is reason to celebrate. Join us also at 1pm at the Mission San Luis Rey as we celebrate Bells Across America signifying the ringing of the town criers bell calling the citizens to hear about the signing. Staying in touch with the technology in our industry is fun, interesting and useful. Helping our business and home customers with technologies that make their lives safer, simpler and more enjoyable makes us feel good about what we do.

Since 2010 the Internet, with its access to virtually the entire range of human knowledge, has come to dominate PC usage. PCs and to a large extent smart phones have become little more than Internet access devices. Since the 1970s we have been conditioned to think of computers and cell phones as part of an ever evolving, ever improving technological process that renders our older devices obsolete every couple of years. That all changed as the Internet became the main focus of technology over the last few years. Making the entire universe of human knowledge available and inventing innovative ways process and use it became a job for high speed, high power Internet servers. Our PCs no longer need fast CPUs, mass storage devices and lots of memory to hold and process data from the Internet. For the most part our PCs need only to receive, display and transfer data.

Nearly all PCs built after 2009 have CPU speeds sufficient to run Internet applications in real time. A brand new, high-end Dell, HP or

At Rancho Coastal Humane Society, I like to say, “Dollars are dog food.” On San Diego Gives Day dollars are also books, medical supplies, family services, senior programs, and the environment.

This week’s Pet up for adoption, Seamus, came to us because her owner had to go into a Memory Care unit . . and had not left plans for the care and comfort of Seamus. Lenovo PC with an AMD Ryzen or Intel CPU, 32GB of DDR4 RAM and a 1TB SSD might set you back $2000 but it won’t handle the Internet any faster than your ten year old PC. A small percentage of business and professional users still use ‘high task” off-line, stand alone applications on powerful PCs but even these applications are being increasingly replaced by applications run on high speed Internet servers.

For the past decade PC makers and smart phone manufacturers have continued to emphasize speed and capacity gains made in their hardware products in order to boost sales. The reality is that for the most part, the Internet has eliminated the need to increase local processing, memory and storage capabilities and we have seen a dramatic drop in new PC sales as consumers and businesses find their older PCs maintain technological relevance for a decade or more.

Next week we will review The Computer Factory’s inventories of new and refurbished PCs (desktop, notebook micros and all-in one) and discuss how each configuration relates to different user patterns and lifestyle niches.

for all of San Diego County. The current transportation plan neglects North & East County and instead focuses on downtown San Diego.

It taxes working-class families and the underserved communities that aren’t able to afford to live next to where they work. It crushes landscapers, plumbers, farmers, electricians, parents and families, and anyone who must drive or work and live away from fixed rail lines to make a living.

San Diegans deserve a world-class transportation system, but it must be thought out carefully and must be presented to the taxpayers, not decided by bureaucrats.

This is just one reason why The Paper has strongly endorsed Jim Desmond for re-election as 5th District Supervisor. He is in touch with the community and knows what the people want and he fights for them (us).

Valley Center History Museum:

Who knew "Hercules" could cook? By ROBERT LERNER, Historian Valley Center History Museum

The Valley Center History Museum has several cookbooks on exhibit, all attributed to the local woman who portrayed the fictitious cooking icon Betty Crocker.

Joining this fabled group of books is one by the late Steve Reeves, better known as a world-class bodybuilder, movie star, and Valley Center rancher.

Reeves, who lived in Valley Center for 43 years before dying in 2000, appeared in more than 20 motion pictures, but was best known as the star of "Hercules" and for staying fit and healthy.

The book, called "Steve Reeves Hercules Cookbook," states that the material reveals his food recipes and nutritional secrets. Promotional material points out correctly that the film hero inspired millions of people to become fit before fitness was cool. The 104page book includes recipes for his meals and special nutritional drinks made from fresh fruits. The Valley Center Historical Society was told by a co-editor that data was taken from home recipe cards and personal interviews.

Before gaining world-wide fame, Reeves attended chiropractic school and also studied physical therapy.

At the museum, a permanent exhibition features memorabilia from each part of his life. There are photos of body-building competitions (he was Mr. America, Mr. World and Mr. Universe), motion picture souvenirs (at one time he was number one at the box office) and mementos of his ranching years in Valley Center (a saddle, branding iron, tack equipment, and personal photos).

For more information on Steve Reeves, visit the Valley Center History Museum at 29200 Cole Grade Road. Hours are Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free. The museum can be reached via e-mail at museum@vchistory.org or by calling 760-749-2993.
