The WINGS OF FREEDOM TOUR travels the nation as a flying tribute to the flight crews who flew them, the ground crews who maintained them, the workers who built them, the soldiers, sailors and airmen they helped protect; and the citizens and families that share the freedom that they helped preserve.

The B-17 and B-24 were the backbone of the American effort during the war from 1942 to 1945 and were famous for their ability to sustain damage and still accomplish the mission. Despite the risks of anti-aircraft fire, attacking enemy fighters, and the harrowing environment of subzero temperatures, many B17s and B-24s safely brought their crews home.

The P-51 Mustang was affectionately known as the bombers “Little Friend” – saving countless crews from attacking Axis fighters. After the war, many aircraft were scrapped for their raw aluminum to rebuild a nation in post-war prosperity and therefore very few were spared. The rarity of the B-17, B-24 & P-51 - and their importance to telling the story of WWII is why the Collings Foundation continues to fly and display the aircraft nationwide.

At each location local veterans and their families are encouraged to visit and share their experiences and stories with the public. For aviation enthusiasts, the tour provides opportunity for the museum to come to the visitor and not the other way around!

Patience of Grandpa

A woman in a supermarket is following a grandfather and his badly behaved 3-year-old grandson. It's obvious to her that he has his hands full with the child screaming for candy in the candy aisle, cookies in the cookie aisle and for fruit, cereal and soda in the other aisles.

Meanwhile, Grandpa is working his way around, saying in a controlled voice, "Easy William, we won't be long . . . easy, boy." Another outburst and she hears the grandpa calmly say: "It's okay, William, just a couple more minutes and we'll be out of here. Hang in there, boy" At

Let’s take a look at these individual aircraft: The B-24 Liberator

The world’s only fully restored and flying Consolidated B-24J Liberator is flying over America on its new mission: living history.

The B-24 fought for our freedom in the skies of Europe and the Pacific as a strategic bomber during the Second World War. In order to help preserve this history and honor the veterans who participated in the war, B-24 serial number 44-44052 has been restored to mint condition under the auspices of the Collings Foundation of Stow, MA. Over sixty years ago, in August 1944, the Collings Foundation’s Liberator was built at the Consolidated Aircraft Company’s Fort

Very impressed, the woman goes outside where the grandfather is loading his groceries and the boy into the car. She says to the elderly man, "It's none of my business, but you were amazing in there. I don't know how you did it. That whole time you kept your composure, and no matter how loud and disruptive he got, you just calmly kept saying 'things would be okay.' William is very lucky to have you as his grandpa."

"Thanks," said the grandpa, "but I'm William. The little brat’s name is Kevin.”

Minnesota Bank Robbed!

On Friday, A hooded robber burst into a Minnesota bank and, at gunpoint, forced the tellers to load their cash into a plain brown bag.

As the robber approached the door, one brave customer grabbed the hood and pulled

Worth, Texas, plant. Shortly afterward, the aircraft was delivered to the US Army Air Force, and in October of 1944, it was transferred to the Royal Air Force. Under the British flag, the B-24 saw combat in the Pacific Theater as KH191 in operations ranging from anti-shipping to bombing and re-supply of resistance force operations.

At war’s end, the aircraft was abandoned by the RAF in a bomber graveyard in Khanpur, India; with the assumption that it would not fly again. However, in 1948, the Indian Air Force succeeded in restoring 36 B-24’s, including 44-44052, to operational status. These aircraft were utilized until 1968.

For the next 13 years, the aircraft again sat abandoned in India until British aircraft collector, Doug Arnold, obtained it in 1981. The aircraft was disassembled and transported back to England in a Heavy Lift cargo plane.

Once in England, the aircraft was advertised for sale in “as is” condition and in 1984, Dr. Robert F. Collings purchased it. After a sea voyage of three weeks, the B-24 arrived in

it off, revealing the robbers face. Without a moments hesitation, the robber shot the customer.

He then looked around the bank and noticed one of the tellers looking straight at him.

The robber instantly shot and killed him also. Everyone in the bank, by now horrified, stared down at the floor in silence.

The robber yelled, "Well, did anyone else see my face?"

There was a long moment of dead silence in which everyone was terrified to speak.

Then, one old Norwegian named Ole cautiously raised his hand and said, "My wife got a pretty good look at you."

Collings said that the Foundation intended to restore the plane for static display only, but he was persuaded to restore it to flying status by local B-24 crewmen.

“This made it about five times greater a project,” Collings said. “We were convinced by the argument that only about three thousand people a year would see a static display, but three million might see it on a nationwide tour.”

Preliminary restoration work started in 1985, led by Massachusetts volunteers, most of who were former crewmen, or sons of crewmen, on B-24’s. When Collings decided to make the plane a flying restoration, he contacted Tom Reilly Vintage Aircraft in Kissimmee, Florida, to do the work on the airframe and power plant. original builders sponsored work on the Emerson Electric nose turret, PPG Industries of Pittsburgh supplied turret glass, and United Technologies of Hartford, CT, donated a Norden bombsight. General Dynamics, a successor to Consolidated Aircraft, the original manufacturers of the B-24 in Fort Worth, TX, was a major sponsor of its restoration.

Collings said the restoration involved complete disassembly of the plane and work on about 80% of the B-24’s 1.2 million parts. There was some corrosion and minor damage “plus the desire to make all the systems (engines, props, hydraulics, and electrical) one hundred percent right”.

The entire hydraulic plant was replaced or overhauled, and every pulley was replaced. All cables and hardware, the bearings, an electronic strobe system, the batteries, and the radios were donated, along with installa-

tion advice and assistance.

The fuselage was in reasonably good shape, but twenty percent of its skin still had to be replaced. More than 420,000 rivets were replaced, as well as fuel cells, brake tubes, tires, and windows.

Most of these parts were donated.

On September 10, 1989, after more than five years of hard work and 97,000+ hours of labor, the B-24 flew for the first time after restoration.

Starting a new life in 1989 flying as “All American,” a 15th Air Force aircraft that flew in Italy with the 461st Bomb Group, the B-24 flew for many years with this scheme.

In 1998, she was repainted to represent the “Dragon and His Tail,” a 5th Air Force B24 flying in the Pacific Theater with the 43rd Bomb Group. In 2005, she was repainted as “Witchcraft” in honor of the veterans of the 8th Air Force, who flew in the European Theater during WWII.

The original “Witchcraft” was produced as a B-24H, built by Ford at the famous Willow Run, MI, plant in 1944. It was delivered to the 467th in Wendover, Utah, and initially assigned to Second Lieutenant George W. Reed and his crew who flew the aircraft to England.

“Witchcraft” safely arrived with her crew at Station 145 in Rackheath, England, on March 19th, 1944, after a 20day flight over the Atlantic.

The aircraft and crew began their combat service on April 10th, 1944, flying the first combat mission of the 467th Bomb Group. Over the next year “Witchcraft” flew an incredible 130 combat missions with various crews.

“Witchcraft” was never once turned back while on a mission, and never had any crewmen injured or killed. Her last mission was flown on April 25th, 1945, which also was the last mission flown by the 467th Bomb Group. “…Witchcraft” was there at the beginning and at the end.”

After the war, she was returned to the United States and like many other B-24’s, was scrapped on October 3rd,

The most widely recognized and revered aircraft type of World War II, the B-17 Flying Fortress, takes to the skies again. The B-17G (Serial # 44-83575) has been returned to its wartime configuration under the auspices of the nonprofit Collings Foundation of Stow, MA, and given the name “Nine-O-Nine.”

The Collings Foundation’s Flying Fortress was built at Long Beach, CA, by the Douglas Aircraft Company and accepted on April 7, 1945. Although she was too late for combat, #44-83575 did serve as part of the Air/Sea 1st Rescue Squadron and later in the Military Air Transport Service.

Page 4 - April 25, 2013 Fatal Traffic Collision in Carlsbad

On Sunday, April 21st, at about 7:40 a.m., City of Carlsbad Police received numerous 911 calls regarding a collision between a vehicle and a bicyclist.

Callers reported that a single vehicle travelling northbound on El Camino Real north of La Costa Avenue struck one of two bicyclists traveling together north in the bike lane. The bicyclist was reported unconscious at the scene with a head injury.

City of Carlsbad Fire Department also responded to the scene to treat the injured bicyclist. The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Carlsbad Police Traffic Division is conducting the investigation into the collision.

The decedent was later identified by the Medical Examiner’s office as 45-yearold Eric Ringdahl.

The Carlsbad man, was married with children.

New RV Parking Rules Take Effect in Carlsbad

New rules for parking RVs and other oversized vehicles are now in effect in the City of Carlsbad. The ordinance restricts overnight parking of recreational and oversized vehicles on city streets between the hours of 2 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The goal of the ordinance is to effectively manage the parking of RVs and oversized vehicles in the City of Carlsbad, and address the many complaints by residents, visitors and business owners associated with overnight parking of RVs on city streets.

The ordinance includes exceptions to accommodate the needs of city residents, their guests, and hotel or motel guest with RVs.

“The ordinance gives the police department the necessary tools to address those RV and oversized vehicle users that act without regard to the health, safety and quality of life of others in the City of Carlsbad,” said City of ness back to a healthy state.

Cain said the city will issue warnings through June 30 to oversized vehicle users without a permit and in violation of the ordinance. On July 1 the City of Carlsbad Police Department will begin issuing citations for violations of the ordinance. Every citation will be assessed a $50 penalty.

The ordinance went into effect March 14, but the city waited to begin enforcement until large red and white signs could be installed citywide.

The signs advise RV and oversized vehicle users of the new restrictions.

“Other coastal cities have addressed the problem by restricting RV overnight parking and have successfully introduced a parking permit system,” said City of Carlsbad Deputy Director of Transportation Bryan Jones.

Keith, after college, moved to Alaska where he was a hunter and trapper, then married an Eskimo girl, while living in a village about 40 miles from Siberia. “I literally could see Russia from my home.”

They raised four kids from his Eskimo village, where they lived for 12 years before moving into Fairbanks. He then opened up a Big Game company, serving international hunters. Now he runs ice fishing trips and works with Asian Tour Companies.

Damaged skin was fabricated and replaced on site; engines and props were stripped, cleaned, repaired, and tested; four thousand feet of new control cable was installed; all electrical wiring and instrumentation was replaced. As she neared completion, the jeers and laughter of those who said she would never fly again faded as the sounds of four 1200 HP WrightCyclone engines echoed across the desert and “Yucca Lady” rose as the phoenix and climbed into the sky.

For twenty years without a major problem or incident, #44-83575 served as a fire bomber dropping water and borate on forest fires. She was sold in January 1986 to the Collings Foundation.

Restored back to her original wartime configuration by Tom Reilly Vintage Aircraft, she represented one of the finest B-17 restorations and won several awards.

In August 1987, while performing at an airshow in western Pennsylvania, “NineO-Nine” was caught by a severe crosswind moments after touchdown. The right wing suddenly lifted in the air, finally coming down at the end of the runway.

Despite the efforts of her crew, she rolled off the runway, crashed through a chain link fence, sheared off a power pole and roared down a 100-foot ravine to a thundering stop. The landing gear sheared off, the chin turret was smashed and pushed into the nose; the Plexiglas nose was shattered; bomb bay doors, fuselage, ball turret, wing and nacelles all took a tremendous beating. Engines and propellers were also torn from their mounts.

Fortunately, there were no fatalities to the crew or riders.

The Collings Foundation’s Mustang #42-103293 “Betty Jane” was built in Dallas, TX. #42-103293 went though a meticulous restoration from 2000 to 2004. One of the most famous of these modified two seat fighters was used by Dwight Eisenhower and was named “The Stars Look Down.” Ike rode in the backseat of that Mustang over the beaches of Normandy to direct the invasion during DDay. The Collings Foundation’s Dual Control TP-51C “Betty Jane” is the only one of its type in existence today that features a full set of dual controls.

The Collings Foundation’s P51C was named “Betty Jane” to honor Col. Charles M. McCorkle, P-51 pilot and Commander of the 31st fighter group based in Algeria, Tunisia, Sicily, and Italy.

C.M. McCorkle was an excellent fighter pilot and commander, with 11 confirmed kills under his belt – six of them in a P-51 Mustang named “Betty Jane.” The 31st led the Mediterranean Theatre of Operation in air combat victories with a total of 571 kills.

Meet Captain Jay Walker, United States Army Air Force, Retired.

He had his hand in his pocket as if he had a gun but no weapon was seen, police said.

On April 18th, he turned 90 years of age. Monday, the 22nd they honored him with his birthday party held at Palomar Airport.

Former US Army Air Force B-17 Pilot, Captain Jay Walker earned the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal while flying bombing missions over Germany during World War II. However, due to administrative errors at that very chaotic time, the medals earned were never presented to him.

Now, some sixty five years late and thanks to the effort of fellow Old Bold Pilot, retired USAF Brig Gen Jim Greshik, the medals were presented to Jay at an Old Bold Pilot breakfast on March 23 2011.

Escondido Carjacking

A blue, 1998 Mercedes E320, was hijacked early Tuesday morning by a thief described as a shaved-head Latino, about 20 years old, brandishing a pistol.

The victim was at a stop sign at Harding Street and McKinley Avenue just after 7:30 a.m. when he was approached by the thief who walked up to the car with a pistol in his hand, according to Escondido police.

Captain Walker flew the B17G “Screaming Eagle 007” when he was assigned to the 546th Bomb Squadron, 384th Bomb Group, 8th AF. He flew 30 missions, and after the war, he flew the Collings Foundation’s B-17 “Nine-ONine” around the country on tour for seven years.

Ten years ago he had a series of four strokes within a period of one year; that put an end to his flying career.

The robber was last seen walking north away from the store.

Police said the carjacker was wearing a black sweater or shirt and jewelry, including rings, bracelets and necklaces. so you may want to stop by and shake the hand of a true American hero.

Mercy Air Ambulance Transports Crash Victim in Vista

California High Patrol officers called for air ambulance evacuation of a 59-year-old Temecula man after he sustained major injuries in Vista on Sunday following an accident where the driver of a motorhome pinned the victim's body between two vehicles.

The driver of the motorhome, Jeffrey Thomas Smith, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, according to CHP reports.

The accident occured near east Route 76 near Vista Way. Smith was booked into the Vista Detention Center.

The victim, who was flown to a hospital, has not been identified. Niether the victim, nor his wife, was identified by CHP. His wife, who was inside the car, was not injured.

The quarterly results are in and worldwide PC sales are down a record 17%. Commercial PC sales, which constitute 50% of all PC sales are holding steady at last year’s numbers so the 17% drop in overall sales has been the result of a 34% drop in retail sales. Commercial buyers are still able to buy PCs with W7 (Windows 7) but retail buyers can find only W8 (Windows 8) PCs on the big box electronics store shelves.

Microsoft’s attempt to force-feed the wildly unpopular W8 to retail customers is killing the retail PC business.

While W8 is obviously a large factor in the plunging sales figures for Windows PCs, there are other factors depressing PC sales. Apple doesn’t have the W8 problem yet their first

As many Californians are well aware, Tax Day was last week.

However, many may be unaware that more than 38 thousand taxpayers are owed a refund from the California Franchise Tax Board, International Revenue Service (IRS) or the Board of Equalization.

The State is holding more than 16 million dollars in unclaimed refunds.

How is this possible? Well, either individuals failed to claim appropriate credits or they simply did not update their most recent address with the appropriate taxing agency.

If you have an XP PC purchased in 2006 or later, have it checked out. If the hardware is good, a simple clean up and perhaps RAM upgrade may add years of useful life. Upgrading an XP PC to Win 7/64 can be done but is usually not worth the expense.

With a Vista PC you have a couple of additional options. Upgrading to Win 7/64 or downgrading to Win XP can both be viable options. Win XP is about 40% faster than the now infamous Vista.

California Must Keep its Word to the Voters

According to U.S. News College Compass, six of the top ten public universities in the nation are located in California. Maintaining and improving our world-class education system is essential for the future well-being and prosperity of our state, and indeed, of the nation as a whole.

In the 2012 general election, voters were encouraged to increase sales and income taxes through passage of Proposition 30. The express intent of the Legislature regarding enactment of Proposition 30 was to provide funding for California’s schools, the CSU, UC and Community College systems.

Assembly member Jeff Gorell (R-Camarillo) to co-author AB 67. This legislation specifies that no system-wide tuition increases will take place for the California State Universities during the next four fiscal years assuming implementation of the Governor’s budget proposal regarding CSU funding. The bill also encourages regents of the UC system to refrain from tuition increases.

Proposition 30 was passed to help fund education , not to pay for expanding government, increased bureaucracy or bigger pensions for government workers. With the passage of Proposition 30, California now has the highest marginal tax rate in the United States. The state needs to keep its word to the voters To help ensure that who have agreed to this added Proposition 30 tax revenues burden. Enactment of AB 67 are allocated as the voters will help make sure this hapintended, I have joined pens.

TOWN HALL MEETING

Town Hall meetings are a good way to give residents an opportunity to express their opinions and discuss their concerns in a less formal environment than regular council meetings. In fulfillment of one of my campaign promises, I have held four Town Hall meetings since 2011. My next town hall meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 4:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 201 N. Broadway. The meeting format will be an open question and answer period on any topic

relating to local government.

This is your opportunity to share your views on the issues facing our City Council and to discuss any subject that matters to you or your business. We will follow up with the appropriate City department to resolve any issues.

The meeting will also be videotaped and rebroadcast the following Sunday and Monday evening at 6:00 p.m. on Cox. Ch.19 and AT&T U-Verse Ch. 99.

I encourage you to attend and participate in the discussion, or even just say hello and introduce yourself. Working together we can help Escondido become a better city.

San Marcos • Mayor Jim Desmond Discover San Marcos Hikers to Visit Piedras Pintadas Trail

The City of San Marcos Community Services will sponsor a Discover San Marcos Hike on Saturday, May 4. The Piedras Pintadas Trail is part of the San Dieguito River Park that will someday extend from Del Mar to Julian.

The hike is free and will begin at 9 am; hikers can start signing in at 8:30 am.

Hikers will meet in the parking lot at Bernardo Bay Natural Area, Rancho Bernardo Road West (across from the retirement home.)

The trailhead is south of Lake Hodges and west of I-15.

An adult must accompany all minors. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended; bring water and trail snacks. Dogs must be on a maximum 6’ leash at all times. A Baptist pastor was presenting a children's sermon.

During the sermon, he asked the children if they knew what the resurrection was.

Now, asking questions during children's sermons is crucial, but at the same time, asking children questions in front of a congregation can also be very dangerous.

Having asked the children if they knew the meaning of the resurrection, a little boy raised his hand . . .

The pastor called on him and the little boy said, "I know that if you have a resurrection that lasts more than four hours you are supposed to call the doctor."

At a recent meeting, the membership of the LSM Club approved two energy related resolutions: 1. “Resolution Urging President Obama to Reject the Keystone Pipeline” joining the San Diego Central Committee in asking that President Obama reject the pipeline to help stabilize our planet’s climate, protect public health, and advance job creation in the new “green economy.” 2. “ResolutionMoratorium on Hydraulic Fracturing” asks that Gov. Brown place a moratorium on all hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking” activities in California until regulations are put in place that guarantee public health and safety, address the impacts of climate change, immediate testing and disclosure of all sites currently being, or in the past have been, fracked are documented and studied and substitution of renewable energy wherever feasible. Escondido City Councilman John Masson Bitten by Rattlesnake

were at least a 30 minute boat ride from the marina. They put me in a ski boat as that was faster . . . even in the choppy waters.

They had an ambulance waiting and a chopper on standby.

It, however, took the chopper another 30 to 40 minutes to get to the marina.

My leg is blowing up. They couldn’t do anything for me.

No pain meds, nothing. The EMT’s were not paramedics.

Finally the chopper arrives at the Temple Bar Marina and two RN’s hit me with morphine to combat convulsions; they cleared my airway . . . then it was a 30 minute chopper ride to the Vegas hospital.

What could go wrong?

John Masson, Escondido’s newest council member, found out the hard way in June of last year.

“I was running barefoot on the shore, something I did every day for exercise, my personal workout. This time I climbed up to the edge of the water, up over a hill, I had been running that hill for four or five days.

This time, however, I decided to take a different route back down the hill. Near the bottom of the hill was a rock. I skipped over it and something hit my ankle. It stung a little bit and there was a little bit of bleeding.

I looked around but didn’t see anything. I remember it like it was yesterday. It was June 21st, 2012.

About 20-30 seconds later the “sting” became a bit more painful. I got to wondering if I had been hit by a rattler, a scorpion, a spider? It had now became very painful and I was a good 40 mintues away from our houseboat. I had taken a different route back to the houseboat and didn’t remember the exact location of the boat. I couldn’t put much pressure on the foot I climbed several hills, went through several canyons, finally spotting the houseboat.

I hollered at my friends and they rushed to help; they iced down and elevated my foot, still, the ankle began to swell badly. We

They wheeled me into the ER and, based on another rattlesnake bite patient they had just discharged, they estimated the snake that hit me must have been 4-5’ long. The other patient, having received immediate treatment, was treated and released.

That would not be my case.

I had been bitten around 11:30am, got to the hospital by 3pm, did not get any antivenin till 6:30 that evening (the hospital had run out due to the previous patient).

I spent quite a long time in ER just on pain meds. They gave me three vials of antivenin. I spent the next five days in ICU. The leg was elevated; I could not move without excruciating pain.

After returning home I saw Doc Johnson in Valley Center, the local specialist in rattlers.

He said I had way too little antivenan, way too late; had I gotten enough vials I would have done a lot better. The rattler was a Mojave Green, one of the most poisonous. I could have lost a leg, or even died.”

Today, Masson only has a tiny scar as a memento.

Masson, who is married, with two kids, goes houseboating ever summer with his family and two other families.

Asked if he will do it again, “yes, but I’m taking my shotgun!”

Moral of the story (as we published last week) . . . it’s rattlesnake season. They are out of hibernation. Be careful out there!
