How our foreign neighbors (especially overseas) perceive America, and us Americans, can be quite surprising – even shocking – in the most common questions they ask about us, and the United States in general.

Remember, while many foreigners abroad visit the United States in high numbers each year, most do not. It’s a great big world out there: Russia, China, Japan, the Middle East, Europe, Africa, South America, Australia -- well, you get The The Paper Paper -- 760.747.7119 760.747.7119

the global picture.

All in all, there are 195 different countries in the world, with inhabitants that speak over 6,500 different languages -- and most of them have never been to the United States.

Their only impressions of us Americans and our country are from what they glimpse in newspapers, fleeting broadcast news, and the steady diet of our sitcom shows, from “I Love Lucy” re-runs to “Gunsmoke” to our current ‘reality shows’ like “Beverly Hills Housewives,” all with foreign lan-

guages dubbed-in, or subtitles.

Make no mistake – our American culture is still the most recognized, imitated, and admired than any other! However, the reverse does not always hold true for Americans in general, i.e., we don’t (as a general rule) emulate our foreign neighbors or their cultures to the same degree that they admire/imitate us: our unrestricted freedom, our financial and entrepreneurial spirit, even our rebellious ways, are all the cultural traits which brought millions upon millions of immigrants, past to present, to our shores in search of this “elusive and uncen-

sored dream.”

To this very day, “The American Dream” and the ultimate freedom to prosper, surprisingly, remains our greatest ‘conceptual export’ to overseas countries! Our culture continues to resonate, powerfully, beyond our shores.

ELVIS PRESLEY PHENOMENON PERMEATES CHINA. Even in the most remote recesses of China (the most populated country on Earth), China’s reclusive, and (relatively) isolated culture reveres and recognizes Elvis Presley to the

point of staging an Elvis Presley tribute just weeks ago, on August 7, 2018, in Shanghai, China, all part of the vastly popular “Elvis Festival.”

It was a cultural, milestone event. A historical first.

The Elvis Festival was the first time-ever that an Elvis impersonator performed in mainland China. When Elvis Presley first peaked in popularity in America, China banned the intrusion of such foreign culture. They are now making up for lost time! Today, Elvis Presley enjoys an almost god-like following!

In a report filed last week by United Press International from Beijing, China, and picked up by the Los Angeles Times: “Young Chinese in Beijing and Shanghai are snapping up Elvis Presley music! The music comes with Chinese-language lyrics and an Elvis pocket calendar.”

“This is the last and only place where Elvis has never been released,” said Anders Nelsson, the music publishing house overseeing the project. “This guy is more popular here than we could ever possibly have imagined,” Nelsson was quoted as saying, direct from Beijing, China. Over 40 years after his death, Elvis

Presley’s voice can be heard singing from nightclubs, bars, shops, and restaurants all over mainland China.

In China, where over 1.4-billion people live, Elvis Presley is known as “Mao Wang,” which translates to “Cat King.” China’s nickname for the famed American swivel-hipster derives from Elvis’ down-home southern nickname, “The Hillbilly Cat,” and the subsequent title of his album, “Elvis, the Hillbilly Cat.”

AMERICANS WHO HAVE GAINED SHOCKING “SUPERSTAR” STATUS IN CHINA. But “Elvis the Pelvis” isn’t the only American celebrity the country of China has taken to its bosom. China, unashamedly, has exalted such American celebs as actor Johnny Depp (of “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie fame), Tom Cruise, and Oscar-Winning actress, Halle Berry, all of whom have been catapulted to unexpected heights and surprising tumultuous receptions normally reserved for royalty!

Such levels of popularity in the most populated country on the planet translates to mega-bucks! For example, the bulk of Halle Berry’s movie “Cloud Atlas” accumulated most of its $103-million foreign box office gross in China! Overseas popularity is now the newest big-league game among Hollywood’s most powerful movers-and-shakers. According to the latest U. S. financial and busi-

This week, a compendium of wit, wisdom and neat stuff you can tell at parties. Enjoy!

We went to see a movie the other night.

Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch standard 4 pound dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea is to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields.

“Excuse me, sorry, oops, excuse me, pardon me, gotta hurry, oops, excuse me.”

The true story of the Chicken Gun. Too funny not to share!

British engineers heard about the gun and were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers.

WHEN THE GUN WAS FIRED, THE ENGINEERS STOOD SHOCKED AS THE CHICKEN HURLED OUT OF THE BARREL, CRASHED INTO THE SHATTERPROOF SHIELD, SMASHED IT TO SMITHEREENS, BLASTED THROUGH THE CONTROL CONSOLE, SNAPPED THE ENGINEER'S BACK-REST IN TWO, AND EMBEDDED ITSELF IN THE BACK WALL OF THE CABIN, LIKE

I sat in an aisle seat as I usually do because it feels a little roomier.

Just as the feature was about to start, a blonde from the center of the row got up and started working her way out.

By the time she got to me, I was trying to look around her and I was a little impatient, so I said, “Couldn’t you have done this a little earlier?”

“No!” she said in a loud whisper. “The ‘TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE PLEASE’ message just flashed up on the screen and mine is in the car.” ••••• All arrivals in heaven have to go through an examination to determine if admission will be granted. One room has a clerk who inputs records of what each applicant did on their last day of life. The first day’s applicant explains that his last day was not good. "I came home early and found my wife naked in bed.

ness sources: “Today, (Hollywood) studios count on a film’s foreign box office even more than its domestic gross.”

With China’s population more than 4 times larger than that of the United States, Chinese taste in American movies has now become virtually impossible to ignore! No other country – European or otherwise -- can make this claim of adoration which China bestows on American movie stars, singers, et al!

Even though the 51-year-old Halle Berry’s star may have lost some of its lustre here in the United States, she is almost god-like to her legions of rabid fans in the country of China! In 2014, she won a rare “Global Icon Award” at China’s Huading Film Awards. Unlike America’s Academy Awards (the “Oscar”) which only several board members vote to decide the winner China’s Huading Film Awards are chosen directly, by the people of China! With a staggering 80-million fans voting directly through the show’s website and various Chinese internet portals, American winners of China’s global awards are overwhelmed by the reality of their triumph (directly from the people, themselves) and often American winners are reduced to tears! For Halle Berry, the crowd reception was so thunderous and her ovation so over-powering in duration, that Halle Berry almost broke down with great emotion on stage!

She claimed she had just gotten out of the shower.

Well, her hair was dry and the shower was completely dry too. I knew she was into some hanky-panky and I began to look for her lover.

I went onto the balcony of our 9th floor apartment and found the SOB clinging to the rail by his fingertips. I was angry and bashed his fingers with a flower pot.

He let go and fell, but his fall was broken by an awning.

Seeing him still alive, I found super human strength to drag our antique cedar chest to the balcony and throw it over. It hit the man and killed him.

At this point the stress got to me and I suffered a massive heart attack and died.” The clerk thanked him and sent him on to the waiting room.

The second applicant said that his last day was his worst.

"I was on an apartment building roof working on AC equipment. I stumbled over my tools and toppled off the building.I managed to grab onto the balcony rail of a 9th floor apartment, but some idiot came rushing out and bashed my hands with a flower pot. I fell, but landed on an awning and survived. But, as I looked up, I saw a huge chest falling toward me. I was hit and killed by the chest.” The clerk couldn't help but chuckle as

Looking all about her, at all her rabid fans via satellite, Halle Berry struggled to find the only words which summed up her royal reception: “I feel like an original member of the Beatles -- but in China!”

Just 4 months ago, China’s 24th Annual Huading Awards were held on April 24, 2018, in Los Angeles, California and telecast via satellite “live” back to mainland China. Past winners have been Mel Gibson, Sylvester Stallone, and Oscar-winning actresses, Natalie Portman (of Star Wars fame), and Nicole Kidman. AMERICAN CULTURE IS BRIGHTER THAN A SUPERNOVA OVERSEAS. Despite our radical detractors who remain jealous of us Americans and – instead of keeping their distance – wish to do us harm, our American culture, mannerisms, folkways, mores, and traditions – as well as our rebellious ways down to the way we talk – are often found to be irresistible nostalgia for our overseas cousins.

For better or for worse, our American movies, from “Blackboard Jungle” to “Rebel Without A Cause” starring James Dean, to “The Wild One” motorcycle gangs starring Marlon Brando and Lee Marvin, are all worldwide in their popularity, and if such movies are labeled “forbidden fruit” and censored by foreign political

he directs the man to the waiting room. He is still giggling when his third customer of the day enters.

The clerk apologizes and says "I doubt that your last day was as interesting as the two fellows that arrived here just before you.”

"I don't know" replies the man. "Picture this, I'm buck naked hiding in this cedar chest and....... The haircut!

Blessed are those that can give without remembering and take without forgetting.

One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop.

When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door.

Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop.

The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door.

talking heads, the more seductive and enticing it all becomes!

Most of our overseas cousins (who have never been to the United States) are left only to glimpse us through prismatic lighting, through the lenses of Hollywood moviemaking; impressions gleaned from such global blockbuster hits as the cult-following “American Graffiti” to “Dirty Harry,” to the top-grossing “Fast & Furious” movie (and sequels).

Our Hollywood movies, literally, saturate the nooks and crannies of almost every civilized culture today, affording foreigners abroad an often distorted “keyhole” peek into America and Americans. For most people outside of the United States who have never visited our shores, their views, opinions, and ideas about us are often shaped, colored, and impressed upon them by what they can only see and hear via our movies and television, all of which can distort away from reality.

THE MOST POPULAR FOREIGN QUESTIONS OFTEN MAKE US REFLECT. The most popular questions asked about us Americans, from our overseas neighbors, can often make us stop to think and reflect upon the things we take most for granted. For example, the most prevalent questions foreigners ask about us Americans (and America) often

And that brings us to one of the most common questions foreigners often ask. If this first question seems ridiculous to you, well, the answer may truly surprise, or evenshock you!

WHAT IS THE OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE UNITED STATES? A. English B. Spanish C. None

This is a surprising and shocking question to even ask and, at first, it seems to be a most naïve and silly one from our foreign neighbors. Or, is it?

The answer may, unexpectedly, shock us Americans to learn something new about ourselves because the correct answer is “C,” there is no “official” language of the United States!

Technically, officially, and by federal law, the United States of America has no official language.

However, because English is the most widely-spoken language in the United States, English is relegated to being the “de facto” primary language in our country. But nothing more. This may seem confusing to many

because, while it is true that the majority of U. S. states (32 U. S. states thus far) have successfully (and legally) enacted a variety of “state laws” to make English that particular state’s official language, English is still not recognized – on the federal level – to be the official language of the United States of America.

Unlike several European countries, such as Italy (official language is Italian), England (official language is English), Spain (official language is Spanish), France (official language is French) Greece (official language is Greek), Germany and Austria (official language is German), the United States does not have an official language recognized by our federal government.

When our cousins overseas pose this prevalent question if America has an official language, we Americans are often shocked to find the true answer for ourselves. Now to our next question. Of all the American cities in our union, which city do our overseas foreigners most often visit (or wish to visit)?

are asking about our overseas tourists only. How our global neighbors think, feel, and form their ideas, opinions, and values about us Americans and our country-at-large is a fascinating study. And surveys are “all over the place” regarding the answer to the above question, but according to the official answer from the U. S. Department of Commerce, Travel & Tourism Office, if you picked “A” New York, well perhaps you can become a member of the United Nations in New York, representing our wonderful country! As of 2018, New York City is the most visited destination (by overseas foreigners), followed by Los Angeles, and Orlando, Florida (in the exact order listed above). (By the way, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, is the most visited theme park in the entire world if you include all tourists, including domestic, foreign/immigrant, combined!) However, this question pertains to overseas tourists, only.

New York, home to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Broadway plays and musicals, along with its cultural, intellectual, and financial centers has been featured in more movies and television shows than any other city in America! Man About Town The Paper Endorses Proposition 6

We all pay high gas prices and Governor Brown's recent increase added another $700+ dollars per year to our budgets for gas as well as increased our car tax. Proposition 6 will repeal that increase.

Also contained in Proposition 6 is a requirement that any future gas tax increases in California must go to a vote of the people. This is why we must repeal Proposition 6, known as the Gas Tax Initiative.

Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in financial trouble that there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex, and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills. The Check

Britain is already laying the groundwork to do away with check by 2018. It costs the financial system billions of dollars a year to process checks. Plastic cards and online transactions will lead to the eventual demise of the check. This plays right into the death of the post office. If you never paid your bills by mail and never received them by mail, the post office would absolutely go out of business. The Newspaper

The younger generation simply doesn't read the newspaper. They certainly don't subscribe to a daily delivered print edition.

That may go the way of the milkman and the laundry man. As for reading the paper online, get ready to pay for it. The rise in mobile Internet devices and ereaders has caused all the newspaper and magazine publishers to form an

You say you will never give up the physical book that you hold in your hand and turn the literal pages I said the same thing about downloading music from iTunes. I wanted my hard copy CD. But I quickly changed my mind when I discovered that I could get albums for half the price without ever leaving home to get the latest music. The same thing will happen with books. You can browse a bookstore online and even read a preview chapter before you buy. And the price is less than half that of a real book. And think of the convenience! Once you start flicking your fingers on the screen instead of the book, you find that you are lost in the story, can't wait to see what happens next, and you forget that you're holding a gadget instead of a book. The Land Line Telephone

Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it anymore. Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying double charges for that extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes.

This is one of the saddest parts of the change story. The music industry is dying a slow death. Not just because of illegal downloading. It's the lack of innovative new music being given a chance to get to the people who would

The networks are down dramatically. Not just because of the economy. People are watching TV and movies streamed from their computers. And they're playing games and doing lots of other things that take up the time that used to be spent watching TV. Prime time shows have degenerated down to lower than the lowest common denominator. When Beatles member, John Lennon, had a choice to live any place in the world, including London, Paris, and Tokyo, he chose New York without hesitation. Lennon would later say: “If I’d lived in Roman times, I’d have lived in Rome. Where else? Today, America is the Roman Empire and New York is Rome itself. New York is what Rome used to be.”

FOREIGNERS OFTEN ASK “WHICH STATE DO YOU AMERICANS MOST LIKE TO VISIT IN YOUR OWN COUNTRY?” Take a guess below: A Florida B Hawaii C California It’s a good question because foreigners are smart enough to know that what we Americans, ourselves, like the most – just may be a clue for them as well. Correct answer is “C” California! Aside from being the most populated state in America, more Americans choose to vacation here in the Golden State of California than any other state in the entire country, causing many native Californians to have humorous bumper stickers that read: “Thanks for visiting – now go home!”

WHICH AMERICAN ACCENT DO FOREIGNERS ABROAD SEEM TO LIKE THE MOST?

A Southern California B New Yorker C Deep South

First off, many Californians believe they don’t have an accent – until they travel overseas! I spent 2 years in Europe and my California accent was called “thick” and “obviously a Yank” because of its “flat, nasal tone” as clearly noticed by many of my close European friends, many of whom I still keep in contact with.

But, if you selected “C” the Deep South accent – well, you have pollafter-poll to support your choice! From various repeated surveys, all independently conducted by various research groups, newspapers, CNN, etc., most foreigners (Europeans, in particular) list the Deep Southern U. S. accents as their unabashed favorite!

Though polls obviously vary, and are not scientifically accurate, America’s deep southern accent seems to top the poll findings in most cases, with New York, Boston, Southern California, and Texas, breaking into the Top 5 on most research findings. (Note: Although Texas is sometimes considered the deep south, most foreigners that were polled distinguished the Texas accent as less favorable than the Deep South states of, for example, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina.

There are many regional American accents so to be among the top 7, in a very large pool of contenders is

complimentary, indeed.

Here is the breakdown of the most popular American accents as evaluated and voted upon, viz., by our European cousins, complete with percentage of popularity.

TOP 7 MOST POPULAR AMERICAN ACCENTS. 1. Deep Southern (20 percent) 2. New Yorker (18 percent) 3. Bostonian (17 percent) 4. Southern California (16 percent) 5. Texan (14 percent) 6. Midwestern (10 percent) 7. Minnesotan (5 percent)

These replicated studies were evaluated by the National Endowment for the Humanities as well as other global research groups based outside of the United States.

(Notation: the Southern California accent during these poll-studies (here and abroad) encompasses the so-called “Valley Girl” accent, as well as the Southern California “Surfer Speak” vernacular and enunciation, which is often exploited (and exaggerated) in Hollywood film-making. The admixture of Southern California accents have found a surprising cult following overseas, in the wake of such Hollywood blockbuster films as: “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” and “Clueless” and other films of similar genre which exploit the Southern California accent abroad.) SAN DIEGO CULTURE INFLUENCED THE WORLD! Author,

Cameron Crowe, who wrote “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” went undercover at Clairemont High School in San Diego, California, to write about his experiences and the American teenage rite-of-passage! The film generated a powerful cultfollowing around the world (which continues to this day), all based on the attitudes, behavior, manner of speech, and the American youth culture, right down to San Diego’s surfer sub-culture accents. So the next time you rent the film “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” – well, you’re watching San Diego’s lifestyle, studied, borrowed, and translated into one of the biggest cult films in Hollywood history!

(Note: Although the movie was based totally on San Diego High School youth, the movie was completely relocated so it appeared to happen in Los Angeles, rather than San Diego. The exterior of Ridgemont High School wasfilmed at Van Nuys High School, with other scenes shot at Canoga Park High School and some at nearby Torrance High. The “Ridgemont Shopping Mall” shown in the film was actually the Sherman Oaks Galleria, with exterior shots at Santa Monica Place.)

Foreigners Views of America! Cont. from Page 5 B. Woody Allen C. Sylvester Stallone

It is often difficult to ascertain why different cultures form their unique views, tastes, and value systems. As staid and cloistered as Russia may seem to outsiders, Russians do gush with childlike exuberance over seeing their favorite movie actor or celebrity. Make no mistake, under the skin, all Russians are just as human and vulnerable and full of fun just as much as the next person. If you selected “C” for Sylvester Stallone, well, I’ll share a bottle of Vodka with you at the Kremlin! (Actually, I don’t like the taste of alcohol, so I’ll just have a cherry Coke, but in a Vodka glass.)

Although there may be numerous film stars that are well-known and respected in Russia, such as Tom Cruise, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, few can match the magnetism, appeal, and lustre which Russians, overwhelmingly, see in Hollywood icon, Sylvester Stallone! To this day, Russia’s sustained love-affair with Sylvester Stallone’s onscreen character “Rocky Balboa,” for example, continues to reach newer and newer heights! In short, Sylvester Stallone has an unprecedented cult following inside Russia today. From the original Rocky Balboa film to all its sequels, Sylvester Stallone’s mark is secure within the Russian culture. Stallone’s 3 “Expendables” movies (with a 4th to be announced), also has many Russian tourists aboard Hollywood tour buses, clutching their “Maps to the Stars,” and often clamoring to see Stallone’s residence in Beverly Hills, along their tour route! How mega-popular is Mr. Stallone in the country of Russia? His paintings are on rare display in St. Petersburgh, Russia – a collection of paintings by Sylvester Stallone which have given Russians “bragging rights” to tweak American noses in pointing out, in their own words: “Paintings that not even Americans get to witness!”

As Russian newspapers tout: “Russians from all across our country still come to see it!”

EUROPEANS OFTEN FIND THIS MOST SHOCKING ABOUT THE UNITED STATES: A. How tall Americans are B. How fat Americans are C. How big America is

There are countless things that surprise our European cousins, in particular, who step upon our shores to explore our beautiful country for the very first time! Certainly, the large portions of food served in restaurants; the abundance and variety of grocery store items available; and the unrestricted freedom and entrepreneurial spirit are all robust reasons to astound and surprise our European visitors.

But, the sheer size of America is something that most Europeans cannot truly fathom! So, if you selected “C” above, you are in synch with what Europeans often say is one of the biggest surprises they experience here!

No matter how well they prepare their visit, the very expanse and overwhelming geography of the United States often boggles their minds! This is not surprising when you consider that many of our 50 U. S. states are actually larger than many foreign countries! Yes, you read that correctly: many American states are actually larger than some entire countries! Consider the following:

1. Our state of California is over 3 times bigger than the entire country of England. (California has 163,696 square miles vs. England’s 50,301 square miles.) 2. Our smaller state of New Jersey is larger in size than the countries of Israel or El Salvador or Slovenia! 3. Maryland is physically bigger than the European countries of Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands (Holland) and Switzerland! 4. Our little state of West Virginia is larger than the countries of Ireland, Lithuania, Costa Rica, Croatia, and the Dominican Republic! 5. South Carolina is greater in area than the countries of Austria, Panama, and United Arab Emirates. 6. Maine is bigger than the countries of Jordan and Portugal. 7. Our U. S. state of Indiana is bigger than the countries of Hungary and South Korea. 8. Our state of Arizona is larger than the countries of Italy and the Philippines. 9. Our state of New Mexico is bigger than Finland, Norway, Poland, Malaysia, and Vietnam. 10. Montana outsizes the entire countries of Germany and Japan. 11. Louisiana is bigger in area than the country of Greece. 12. Our Lone Star state of Texas is huge; bigger than the countries of Afghanistan, Bolivia, Chile, Egypt, Pakistan, Turkey, the Ukraine and Venezuela. 13. The American state of Michigan is bigger than the entire United Kingdom (the United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland!). 14. And for good measure (pun intended), our tiniest U. S. state of Rhode Island is larger than Guam, Hong Kong, Luxembourg, Micronesia, Singapore, Bermuda, and the Cook Islands! It is not unusual for overseas guests to inquire of their visit to the United States: “Can we rent a car and visit New York, Florida, Texas, California and Nevada (Las Vegas) in a week?”

Many first-time visitors to the United States wish to experience our beaches (east to west), Lake Tahoe or Yosemite Valley,

Are gas stations going by the way of bookstores and soda fountains? Fueling our cars and trucks is undergoing a major transformation. The number of retail outlets to purchase gas dropped from 202,800 to 152, 995 between1994 and 2013 and by 2015 we were down to 150,000. Three major reasons for this (1) stricter environmental regulations,(2)increased completion, (3) increased number of hybrids and electric cars, at the rate of 6500 per month. Today the station count is up to approximately 168,000. The new show on the scene is the electric charging stations which number just under 18,500 with close to 52,000 outlets to plug in to your electric/hybrids. Tesla has 3000 stations with 7800 outlets. Five other companies divide up the balance. These are Chargepoint, Blink, SemaConnect, EVgo, and Greenlots. The number of Plug-In Brands is expected to surge to 258 by 2025, up from 49 in 2017.

This week’s mystery car made its debut in 1954 as a race car for the streets with its 3.0 liter inline 6 cylinder engine capable of 160 mph. It was the world’s fastest production car. In its initial outing at the LeMans 24 Hour Race it captured first and second in 1955. Not only was it fast, it was unique with its gull wing doors and swing away steering column for easy entry and exit, plus lots of aluminum in its body construction, which kept it super light. Initial price was $6,400.00 (a new Chevy BelAir was $1,700.00). Today if you own one of the 1,400 Coupes built it’s worth a starting price of $1,000,000.00. German engineering at it’s best and beautiful forever with the initials S.L. attached to its name, which stand for Sports Light. Name the Brand and the Model.

Legislature Must Act on Fires

This past year some of the worst wildfires in California history have killed 52 people, destroyed thousands of homes and scorched an area larger than greater Los Angeles. Surviving the Cedar (273,246 acres/ 2,820 structures), Witch (197,990 acres/ 1,650 structures), Cocos, Paradise and Lilac fires in San Diego has taught us a lot. Helping victims is our immediate priority, but we must develop policies that will prevent future mega-fires. Utilities, insurance companies, attorneys are all actively involved in the Capitol. They all have proposals that, not surprisingly, pass the costs on to others - You. The public needs to be heard as well.

California has the toughest environmental standards, but our successes in reducing greenhouse gas emissions have been wiped out by the tons of carbon dioxide spewed by these wildfires! Our fuel load is off the charts. The threat of wildfires is growing by the day as millions of dead trees are filling our forests with fuel, vegetation management is lacking, and the high cost of water and storage in Southern California has allowed previously irrigated farmlands and groves to become dry tinder. I

recall during the Guejito Fire (1993), the healthy avocado grove across the street from my home helped reduce spreading. We must also encourage cooperation between federal, state and local governments, tribes and individual landowners. A large percentage of our state is government land.

Of the $4.1 billion spent through California’s cap-and-trade program, as of 2016-17 only 2% has been used for fire prevention and response activities. Compare that with billions of dollars spent fighting fires and rebuilding.

The Legislature adjourns for the year at the end of August. Interest groups can continue to put their stakes in the ground, but every minute delaying a real comprehensive plan puts us all at risk..

Floor Leader Marie Waldron, REscondido, represents the 75th Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Pala, Palomar Mountain, Pauma Valley, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.

ferences within and outside, our own shores. Regardless of our geographic boundaries, in the final analysis, we are all Earthlings and we are all part of the human family that populates this 3rd planet from the Sun. One official letter from a tourist read: “I knew it was big (the United States). I just didn’t imagine it would be this big! The astounding variety of pretty much everything is just overwhelming!” -- from Triya Bhattacharya.

OUR PATRIOTISM SURPRISES MANY! As with any country on Earth, America has its differences and the freedom to voice these differences. Despite our cultural diversity, off-setting values, and clashes of ideologies, Americans – as a rule – are deeply patriotic. We have a deep love for our country that seems so intense to our foreign visitors that it often catches them with great surprise. One thing we take for granted – the display of our U. S. flags – impresses a deep patriotism which foreign guests marvel at. Such as in this common, global posting: “The American flag was everywhere! Literally. I came to know students are supposed to pledge allegiance to their flag since Kindergarten!” Another sentiment shows a trend among overseas visitors: “I was surprised to see that the U. S. flag is displayed in schools, on rooftops of houses, on trucks – almost everywhere!”

PRETTY WOMEN AND BIG HOUSES. A common cultural shock for many first-time visitors from overseas is the large sizes of our American homes scattered about our suburban neighborhoods! And the endless panorama of beautiful American women everywhere! It is not unusual to see tourists on crowded white-sand beaches, under the shade of a palm tree, cameras at the ready, surveying the vista of bikini-clad beach bunnies!

Huey Pierce Long Jr., born Aug. 30, 1893, was a socialist-leaning Democrat who nicknamed himself “The Kingfish” after a radio character (Amos ‘n’ Andy). He served as the 40th governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and as a member of the United States Senate from 1932 until his assassination in 1935.

sonal purposes.

Long's “Share Our Wealth” plan was established in 1934 with the motto "Every Man a King." Long argued his plan would enable everyone to have at least a car, a radio, and a home worth $5,000.

When Long secured passage of his free textbook program, the school board of Caddo Parish, home of conservative Shreveport, sued to prevent the books from being distributed, saying it would not accept "charity" from the state. Long responded by withholding authorization for locating an Army Air Corps base nearby until the parish (county) accepted the books. ‘The Kingfish’ -- America’s WouldBe Dictator

This tourist letter is not unusual in the slightest but, rather, it is a very common one.

SIZE IS NOT THE ONLY SURPRISE FOR OUR FOREIGN GUESTS! Often what we take for granted here in America is often a shocking jolt to the nervous system of foreigners. Herewith, is an actual letter, verbatim, expressing what is a common experience here on our shores: “The typical supermarket has at least a hundred varieties of frozen pizza, 50 brands of trail mix, etc. I was just astounded by the different kinds of products available even at small gas stations convenience stores!”

Historically Speaking

As the political leader of Louisiana, Long commanded wide networks of supporters and was willing to take forceful action. He established the longterm political prominence of the Long family. His son, Russell Long, served many years as a U.S. senator after Huey’s death. Long developed his own solution to poverty: "Share Our Wealth" program, which would establish a net asset tax, the earnings of which would be redistributed so as to curb the poverty and homelessness epidemic nationwide during the Great Depression. During Long's years in power, great strides were made in Louisiana infrastructure, education and health care. Long was notable among southern politicians for avoiding race baiting. Long sought to improve the lot of poor blacks as well as poor whites.

Under Long's leadership, hospitals and educational institutions were expanded; a system of charity hospitals was set up that provided health care for the poor; massive highway construction, and bridges brought an end to rural isolation. Historian David Kennedy wrote that the extremely authoritarian regime Long established in Louisiana was "... the closest thing to a dictatorship that America has ever known.”

Every state employee who depended on Long for a job was expected to pay a portion of his or her salary at election time directly into Long's political warchest, which raised $50,000 to $75,000 (equivalent to more than $1 million in 2018 dollars) each election cycle. The funds were kept in Long’s famous locked "deduct box" to be used at Long's discretion for political and per-

Long maintained Standard Oil, the corporate interests, and the conservative political opposition were conspiring to stop him from providing roads, books, and other programs to develop the state and to assist the poor and downtrodden. In February 1934, Long introduced his Share Our Wealth plan over a nationwide radio broadcast. He proposed to limit an annual family income guarantee of $2,000–3,000, or one-third of the average family homestead value and income.

Long supplemented his plan with proposals for free college education and vocational training for all able students, old-age pensions, veterans' benefits, federal assistance to farmers, public works projects, greater federal regulation of economic activity, a month's vacation for every worker and limiting the work week to 30 hours to boost employment.

Even during his days as a traveling salesman, Long had confided to his wife that his planned-career trajectory would begin with election to a minor state office, then governor, then U.S. senator, and ultimately President of the United States. In his final months, Long followed up his earlier autobiography, Every Man a King, with a second book titled My First Days in the White House, laying out his plans for the presidency after the election of 1936. The book was published posthumously. It all came to an end on Sept. 8, 1935, when Long was at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge attempting to oust a longtime opponent. Carl Weiss, a physician, approached Long, and shot him with a handgun from four feet away. Long's bodyguards returned fire with more than 30 shots, instantly killing Weiss.

Long died on Sept. 10. His body was dressed in a tuxedo and lay under the State Capitol rotunda with some 200,000 passing by for his funeral. Long was buried on the grounds of the State Capitol, and a statue at his grave depicts his achievements. Also, a statue of Long is in Statuary Hall of the U.S. Capitol. Long’s legacy continued in Louisiana through his wife, U.S. Sen. Rose McConnell Long; his son, Russell and his brothers, Earl Long and George S. Long, as well as several other more distant relatives. ~!qIn many cases the good he achieved outweighed the bad, but it was Long’s extreme bad conduct and dictatorial control over state government that ultimately brought him down. Reportedly, his infamous “Deduct Box” has never been found.

San Diego Women’s Foundation Announces Availability of Grants – Grants will fund programs that address the urgent issue of human trafficking in San Diego County. The San Diego Women’s Foundation (SDWF) recently announced the availability of grant funding for Human Trafficking: Prevention & Intervention. The 2019 grant cycle aims to support organizations that work to combat and prevent human trafficking in San Diego County. According to a recent study by Point Loma Nazarene University and the University of San Diego, human trafficking is San Diego’s second largest underground economy after drug trafficking, with an estimated revenue of $810 million and an estimated 3,000 – 8,000 victims trafficked each year. To be considered, eligible nonprofit organizations must send a Letter of Inquiry by September 10, 2018, at 5:00pm, for projects with a minimum proposal of $25,000 that work across various fields to provide services to those at risk or affected by human trafficking including, but not limited to, education for prevention; rescue programs; therapy and/or counseling; life skills training; employment education; housing solutions; victim advocacy; healthcare; food access; legal services and social services. Victims of sex trafficking are often recruited in middle and high school, with the average age of entry into

sex exploitation being 16 years old. San Diego is ranked as one of the nation’s 13 highest areas of commercial sexual exploitation of children. Domestic trafficking accounts for the majority of commercial sexual exploitation of people and children (80%) in San Diego County.

“Human trafficking is a crisis in our community, affecting thousands each year in San Diego County,” said Katie Sawyer, Executive Director of the San Diego Women’s Foundation. “Our funding can help survivors access the resources they need to get their lives back on track and prevent others from falling victim in the first place, and I am proud that the San Diego Women’s Foundation members have decided to tackle this issue with our next round of grant funding.” For more information about the SDWF’s Human Trafficking: Prevention & Intervention Grants Cycle, or to apply for one of the available grants, visit https://www.sdwomensfoundation.org. About the San Diego Women’s Foundation: Founded in 2000, the San Diego Women’s Foundation educates and inspires women to engage in collective philanthropy. They invest in innovative solutions that benefit the underserved communities in the San Diego region. Contributions and talents of the 215 SDWF members have resulted in more than $3.4 million in grants that have been awarded to 91 nonprofit programs, touching hundreds of thousands of lives in and around San Diego. The Pastor Says . . .

When Moses met God on Mt. Sinai, he came back with The Ten Commandments. God thought that was enough for men and women to get along on earth. But then the teachers of the law began interpreting the Ten Commandments until there were over 600 rules.

Pastor Tom Fry (retired) Church of the Nazarene Lessons from Football

Football season is underway. High Schools played last week, the NFL is in their Preseason and some colleges begin this weekend.

Like all sports, football started as a game, in a backyard, a vacant lot, a playground, or even in the street. Games were friendly and self-officiated. When disagreements could not be resolved, rules and referees/umpires (rules enforcers) were introduced. Games evolved into sports.

Football began with two officials, one to watch the offense, one to watch the defense. They added a third to watch the line of scrimmage and then a fourth to keep an eye on the ball. As the game became faster and more complicated, officials were added. Today, there are seven in pro games, eight in some college games.

Hardly anyone could remember them, let alone obey them.

One of those teachers, the Bible calls them Pharisees, came to Jesus with a question. He was not interested in information or interpretation. He wanted to test Jesus, trick Him, stop him and his teaching. “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”

Jesus was quick to answer. “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” (Matthew 26:36-40)

There it is. Relationship with God before it evolved into religion. Love God, Love your neighbor. It isn’t all you need to get into heaven, but it’s a good start.

"How's that?" asked the government man.

"More land," replied the farmer. Hitch-hiker

I recently spent $6,500 on a young registered Black Angus bull. I put him out with the herd but he just ate grass and wouldn't even look at a cow. I was beginning to think I had paid more for that bull than he was worth. Anyhow, I had the Vet come and have a look at him. He said the bull was very healthy, but possibly just a little young, so he gave me some pills to feed him once per day. The bull started to service the cows within two days, all my cows! Saving the World, one PC at a time

It could be argued that our column’s title overstates the impact that The Computer Factory has on World problems. It’s true that we’ve saved few lives lately, haven’t been able to slow the erosion of American culture and the World seems hell bent on its own destruction in spite of our best efforts. But in our defense, please note that we did stipulate that we are only able to save the world “one PC at a time.” The problem rests with the World, not us. If everyone in the World visited our shop

Inspiring Young Blogger Opens Up About Her Cancer Experience – When someone experiences the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) provides hope, guidance, education and support. For Elizabeth, an inspiring young woman and blogger behind Bald Socks, this support has made all the difference. Elizabeth expected her first semester of college to be challenging, but she never imagined that she would be fighting the hardest battle of her life. Over winter break, she was diagnosed with stage III Hodgkin Lymphoma at the age of 19. While her friends were studying and having fun, she needed to put everything on hold – including school. She returned home to begin an aggressive chemotherapy regimen. “I had one job: to get better,” she says. Elizabeth focused on Dscovering her best self during treatment. She started by donating her hair. “Cancer is a job that drains your energy and wreaks havoc on your physical body and mental space, but by tapping into my inner strength, I was able to find the energy to help others,” she says. By attending a regional LLS Blood Cancer Conference, Elizabeth was able to befriend patients going through similar experiences and learn coping strategies. LLS Community, an online network for blood cancer patients and caregivers, also gives her an important outlet to connect and find support.
