hua hin - a safe haven people flood to the town to escape rising waters
hua hin, THAILAND A noticeable surge in traffic and people arriving in the town has been occurring this week as flood waters were lapping at the outskirts of the capital Bangkok. While areas of Hua Hin have been affected by floods in the past, so far this year it has been a refuge for those from affected areas. While there has been heavy rains in the area, they have not been of the duration experienced in northern parts of Thailand, and it must be hoped that this will remain the case, and that the existing infrastructure can cope. Meanwhile the Thai government is facing criticism for the way it has handled the situation so far, with over three hundred dead and millions displaced, while efforts to prevent the waters inundating Bangkok have caused further misery for the areas just outside the capital. However this year’s floods are reportedly the worst for fifty years, so whoever was in power would have struugled to deal with the situation. It must be hoped though that lessons will be learned and improvements made to avoid this next time, as there surely will be a next time. At press time more than two hundred interprovincial and rural roads remained closed across the country, including sixty-seven highways in 14 provinces, including Phichit, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Sawan, Ayutthaya, Pathum Thani, Lop Buri, Chai Nat, Saraburi, and Suphan Buri. Anyone planning a trip to affected areas should check the highway information hotline (call 1586 but Thai only) before departing. Several appeals are being made for both physical and financial assistance for those affected, or to help build up protection for as yet unaffected areas. Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. My cup of tea Something or someone that one finds pleasing. A column about the English language can’t of course be complete without some consideration of tea. Tea has been around for a long time, and so has the British slang term for it - ‘char’. In fact, it was known in the west by that version of the Mandarin ch’a before it was called ‘tea’. The Dutch adventurer Jan Huygen van Linschoten was one of the first to recount its use as a drink, in Discours of voyages into ye Easte & West Indies, 1598: The aforesaid warme water is made with the powder of a certaine hearbe called Chaa. ‘My cup of tea’ is just one of the many tea-related phrases that are still in common use in the UK, such as ‘Not for all the tea in China’, ‘I could murder a cup of tea’, ‘More tea vicar?’, ‘Tea and sympathy’, ‘Rosie Lee’, ‘Storm in a teacup’ and so on. In the early 20th century, a ‘cup of tea’ was such a synonym for acceptability that it became the name given to a favoured friend, especially one with a boisterous, life-enhancing nature. William de Morgan, the Edwardian artist and novelist, used the phrase in the novel Somehow Good, 1908, and went on to explain its meaning: “He may be a bit hot-tempered and impulsive... otherwise, it’s simply impossible to help liking him.” To which Sally replied, borrowing an expression from Ann the housemaid, that Fenwick was a cup of tea. It was metaphorical and descriptive of invigoration. People or things with which one felt an affinity began to be called ‘my cup of tea’ in the 1930s. Nancy Mitford appears to be the first to record that term in print, in the comic novel Christmas Pudding, 1932:
I’m not at all sure I wouldn’t rather marry Aunt Loudie. She’s even more my cup of tea in many ways. In keeping with the high regard for tea, most of the early references to ‘a cup of tea’ as a description of an acquaintance are positive ones, i.e. ‘nice’, ‘good’, ‘strong’ etc. The expression is more often used in the ‘not my cup of tea’ form these days. This negative usage began in WWII. An early example of it is found in Hal Boyle’s Leaves From a War Correspondent’s Notebook column, which described English life and manners for an American audience. The column provided the American counterpart to Alister Cooke’s Letter from America and was syndicated in various US papers. In 1944, he wrote: [In England] You don’t say someone gives you a pain in the neck. You just remark “He’s not my cup of tea.” The change from the earlier positive ‘my cup of tea’ phrase, to the dismissive ‘not my cup of tea’ doesn’t reflect the national taste for the drink itself. Tea remains our cup of tea in the UK. According to the United Kingdom Tea Council (of course, there had to be one) 60 million of us down 160 million cups of the stuff each day.

japan Motorcycle kicks up a stink with bike powered by rider’s poo A motorbike has been kicking up a stink across Japan as it is powered entirely by the rider’s poo. The Toilet Bike Neo is made by toilet firm Toto, which hopes it will help reduce CO2 emissions by 50 per cent in six years. The three-wheeled vehicle, which uses a modified lavatory and a mobile laboratory for processing, can reach a maximum speed of 50mph. If that wasn’t high-tech enough, the travelling toilet can also talk and write messages in the air using residual light imagery. It is currently being driven on a 600-mile tour of Japan and is set to arrive in Tokyo on November 2. The tour includes a pit stop at a bum-shaped boulder in Nakatsu. Earlier this year, a man travelled 12,500 miles around Australia on a motorbike powered by chip fat. Europe-wide appeal for information about the boy, who is somewhere between 16 and 18 years old, and says his name is Ray. “We have sent appeals for help to all European countries via Interpol. The boy speaks English and a little German but we really have no idea where he comes from,” Michael Maaß, spokesman for the Berlin police told The Local on Friday. The boy emerged from the woods on September 5, and said he had been living wild with his father for about five years. The pair had left civilisation when his mother, who the boy said was called Doreen, died. The boy said he and his father, who he said was called Ryan, had not set up a home but had kept moving. They had slept in a tent and huts they found in the woods, he told them. Maaß said the boy had told youth workers he could remember nothing about where he came from, nor anything much more than his own first name. Two weeks ago he found his father had died, and buried him in a shallow grave which he covered with stones, he told them. “His father had told him to look at his compass and go north, if anything should happen. And this is apparently what he did, walking for two weeks before reaching Berlin,” said Maaß. “There he found a youth emergency centre and walked in. We have never seen anything like it. We have no evidence to contradict what he has told our colleagues at the youth services, although we are still investigating, and very much want to find out who he is.” He said the boy had been medically examined and was physically healthy, while there was nothing to suggest he was the victim of any kind of abuse or violence.

Simply put, we think that France played their best games of the tournament in winning their Quarter and Semi Finals, and we don’t think it is in them to string three winning performances of that quality together - as is often said, the French are predictably unpredictable. The All Blacks are on home soil, produced a massively impressive performance against arch rivals Australia, and we think they will completely dominate France in all areas, and this could be quite a historically comfortable victory. The only thing that prevented their semi final win being by a bigger margin was the relatively poor kicking at goal, and we don’t think France will be let off so easily.
