amnesty proposed for over-40 foreigners acting half their age
hua hin, THAILAND Following the lead set by the government of Yingluck Shinawatra, a Hua Hin organisation has proposed that an amnesty be declared for all foreigners in the area over the age of forty who have been found guilty of acting like twenty year olds. The group making the proposal is the ‘Forgive All Tourists Sitting Leering On Bar Stools’, or FAT SLOBS, and they have asked for particular leniency for first time visitors who are not aware much of the time that they are so offensive. With many foreigners arriving here from the frozen wastelands of northern Europe and Scandinavia, the merest hint of sunshine even in their own countries will have them stripped to the waist, so their arrival in Thailand can be a mind bending experience. They go on to state that in addition to the effects of the sun, the proximity and quantity of attractive locals who not only do not move away when the foreigners are near but actively engage in conversation and other ‘activities’ with them, is just too much for most to handle, and they immediately regress to imagining they are in their late teens or early twenties. This in turn leads to unbridled drinking and the sort of behaviour that is expected of teenagers on holiday. It does seem that if an amnesty is being considered for convicted criminals over a certain age with less than a three year sentence and whose initials are TS, then the poor old foreigners guilty of falling for Thailand’s ‘charms’ should get a break as well, and not be subjected to endless finger pointing or jokes made about their choice of swimwear. They should, however, be encouraged to learn that stripping to the waist and aggressive behaviour is not acceptable in Thailand, and that goes for the men as well.

Borfai bike attack

hua hin, THAILAND A foreign resident has been attacked while driving his motorbike near his home in Borfai on Monday. Witnesses who arrived on the scene shortly after the incident said that the man’s wife was on the back of the bike, and that apparently two masked men, who were presumed to be Thai, had emerged from the side of the road with a large tree limb which they had used to knock the man from the motorbike with, and then ran off. The injured man is a Mr Paul Ayling, and he was taken to hospital soon after with serious head injuries received when falling from the motorbike onto the road. Police have already started an investigation, and apparently have a large number of suspects derived from numerous complaints made against Mr Ayling to them. Mr Ayling was previously involved in an interior design and installation company, Lakeside Interiors, but AWOL understands that this ceased operating a while ago. At press time the latest information on the condition of Mr Ayling was that he had been moved from Hua Hin Hospital, where he had one operation to relieve pressure on his brain, to Bangkok Hospital in Bangkok, where he had had a second operation, and was still in a coma. Mr Ayling’s wife suffered minor injuries in the incident. The couple were apparently due to return to England in a few weeks.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. A skeleton in the closet A secret source of shame, potentially ruinous if exposed, which a person or family makes efforts to conceal. The phrase ‘a skeleton in the closet’ was coined in England in the 19th century. Since then the word closet has become used primarily in England to mean ‘water closet’, i.e. lavatory - a possible hiding place for a skeleton, but not one with much potential. The English now usually use ‘a skeleton in the cupboard’, with ‘skeleton in the closet’ more common in the USA. ‘A skeleton in the closet’ undoubtedly originated as an allusion to an apparently irreproachable person or family having a guilty secret waiting to be uncovered. The closeat-hand domestic imagery of a closet or cupboard gives a sense of the ever-present risk of discovery. What isn’t clear is whether the origin of the phrase lies in fiction or with real life, so to speak, skeletons. The phrase was first used in the early 1800s. The first reference found in print is a figurative one in a piece by William Hendry Stowell, in the UK monthly periodical The Eclectic Review, 1816. The ‘skeleton’ in this case was the desire to keep a hereditary disease secret: Two great sources of distress are the danger of contagion and the apprehension of hereditary diseases. The dread of being the cause of misery to posterity has prevailed over men to conceal the skeleton in the closet... The dramatic device of a hidden body was used widely in the Gothic novels of the Victorian period. Edgar Allen Poe was the master of such tales, for example, this extract from The Black Cat, 1845 : “Gentlemen, I delight to have allayed your suspicions”, and here, through the mere frenzy of bravado, I rapped heavily upon that very portion of the brick-work behind
which stood the corpse of the wife of my bosom. The wall fell bodily. The corpse, already greatly decayed, stood erect before the eyes of the spectators. It has been suggested that the phrase derives from the era of the notorious body snatchers, i.e. prior to 1832, when the UK’s Anatomy Act allowed the more extensive use of corpses for medical research. The theory goes that, in a scenario like that of the concealment of Catholic priests in priest holes in domestic houses in Elizabethan England, doctors would conceal in cupboards the illegally held skeletons they used for teaching. There’s no evidence at all to corroborate that theory. Concealed skeletons are occasionally found walled-up in houses but they are usually those of unwanted infants. The notion of a skeleton in the closet as shorthand for the grim evidence of a murder was widely adopted into the language due to the writings of the popular Victorian author William Makepeace Thackeray. He referred to ‘a skeleton in every house’ in a piece in 1845 and explicitly to ‘skeletons in closets’ in The Newcomes; memoirs of a most respectable family, 1854–55: Some particulars regarding the Newcome family, which will show us that they have a skeleton or two in their closets, as well as their neighbours. Whether Thackeray was alluding to actual skeletons or whether he was responding to the imagination of authors like Poe, we are never likely to know. One person he certainly wasn’t referring to was the 18th/19th century philosopher Jeremy Bentham - despite his being the best-known actual skeleton in a cupboard. Bentham was hardly aiming to keep his skeleton a secret, as he willed that his body be preserved in a wooden cabinet. It is on public display in University College, London. The American expressions ‘come out of the closet’ or simply ‘come out’ began to be used in the 1960s and are, of course, direct follow-ons from ‘a skeleton in the closet’. As far as we’re aware, no one in the UK has declared themselves as gay by coming out of a cupboard.

Beer and Ice Cream Diet As we all know, it takes 1 calorie to heat 1 gram of water 1 degree centigrade. Translated into meaningful terms, this means that if you eat a very cold dessert (generally consisting of water in large part), the natural processes which raise the consumed dessert to body temperature during the digestive cycle literally sucks the calories out of the only available source, your body fat. For example, a dessert served and eaten at near 0 degrees C (32.2 deg. F) will in a short time be raised to the normal body temperature of 37 degrees C (98.6 deg. F). For each gram of dessert eaten, that process takes approximately 37 calories as stated above. The average dessert portion is 6 oz, or 168 grams. Therefore, by operation of thermodynamic law, 6,216 calories (1 cal./ gm/deg. x 37 deg. x 168 gms) are extracted from body fat as the dessert’s temperature is normalized. Allowing for the 1,200 latent calories in the dessert, the net calorie loss is approximately 5,000 calories. Two new teams have joined, Maria Bar and Lazy Daze, replacing Sugar Cane and Papillon, while two have been renamed after the bars were taken over, so Dick’s Office is now Hua Hin Missing You, and Thaiwaii is now Garden Girls. The laminated fixture list sent out earlier has some errors on it due to venue clashes not being spotted. The fixtures on the AWOL website (www.awolonline.net) and at huahinpoolbilliard.leaguerepublic.com are the correct ones, as are the ones printed in AWOL every week. Director Alan Parker has cast Jim Broadbent and Dame Judie Dench as two FA officials charged with investigating the disappearance from football of anybody you would not cheerfully punch all day.
