international film fest coming to town
hua hin, THAILAND Hua Hin has had it’s brushes with the movie world in the past but has never been renowned as a film lover’s paradise - only a few short years ago there wasn’t even a cinema, until Market Village opened with the Major Cineplex in 2006. That may all be set to change though as the town welcomes the inaugural Hua Hin International Film Festival, which will take place between 26th and 29th January at four main venues - the InterContinental Hua Hin Resort which is the official Festival venue, Centennial Park, the Vic Hua Hin and the Major Cineplex at Market Village. Details of the films to be screened will be announced shortly, and AWOL will bring news and information on this as soon as it is available, but what has already been announced and rumoured certainly sounds like an event not to be missed for lovers of the silver screen. The Opening Ceremony will take place on Friday 27th January at the InterContinental, and while this will be invited guests only there will be a chance to see some of the stars attending in a Red Carpet parade on the beach by the resort in the evening. The glamour, excitement and a glimpse of the stars will also be possible at Centennial Park, where the event will be shown on a large screen. Centennial Park will be open from the 26th to 29th January from 5 - 11pm, and there will be live music, shows, movie-related displays, a large screen showing festival highlights, and lots to eat and drink. The proceeds from ticket sales and from Centennial Park activities will be donated to the Flood Victim Relief Fund. The Vic Hua Hin theatre, the dream project of ‘Kru Lek’ Patravadi, will be the venue for Seminar events, and will hold special family events in honour of Khun Patravadi’s long and esteemed contribution to the arts. There will also be a retrospective of all movies starring ‘Kru Lek’. The Major Cineplex is where the festival screenings will take place. With CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Some films are likely to be very popular and tickets will sell out early, so it is a good idea to book in advance. There will be an information desk at the cinema during the festival, where you will be able to get more information on the different screenings and events. As a member of the audience, you can also help choose the films that will win festival awards, with voting forms available at Major Cineplex which will determine the Audience Awards. The Closing Ceremony will be at the InterContinental on 29th January, and will feature The Hua Hin International Film Festival Awards Ceremony. Over 40 films will have been screened over the four days, and over one hundred stars and directors will have been present, and there have already been rumours about Hollywood stars who might be attending. The event is organised by The National Federation of Thai Film Associations with the Hua Hin Municipality and The Tourism Authority of Thailand. The Farm Boy An old farmer drove to a neighbour’s house and knocked at the door. rome, italy Italian man to divorce wife of 77 years over 1940s affair A 99-year-old Italian man and his wife of 77 years are to become the world’s oldest couple to divorce after his 96-year-old wife had an affair 70 years ago. The husband, identified by lawyers in the case as Antonio C, found out about the adultery when he was looking through an old chest just before Christmas. He immediately asked his wife, who is identified as Rosa C, for a divorce as he was so upset over the betrayal. Court papers released in Rome this week revealed that she sent letters to her lover during a secret affair in the 1940s. The couple have five children, a dozen grandchildren and one
great-grand child, but the discovery proved to be the last straw for the marriage, which reportedly ran into trouble ten years ago. Lawyer Anna Orecchioni said: ‘The husband decided to file for divorce after finding the love letters. However they generate a lot of heat which usually means the missile is sterile and is unlikely to serve as a basis for infection if it stays in one place for many years. So if it did not cause much damage, which it apparently didn’t, it was unlikely to cause him ongoing troubles.’
