hua hin, THAILAND Living in a foreign country has plenty of ups and some downs, and none more so than when health problems arise. We have reported on such cases before, and very often the problem lies with the issue of health insurance; expats in general tend to be older, as they look to reap the benefits of their hard work earlier in life, but for many they also find that they are unable to obtain cover for existing medical conditions. When the worst happens and a hospital stay and emergency treatment is required, the bills quickly mount up, adding a difficult and stressful burden. Such a fate has befallen Bob Nicholl, President of the BEKK Solutions Fun Pool League; last week he was rushed to a local hospital after suffering a seizure, and then moved to Bangkok for scans and treatment unavailable in Hua Hin. Fortunately it appears as if the treatment administered has worked, and Bob was able to return home on Tuesday 31st January; however, as many will know, good health care in Thailand is not cheap, and he is facing a huge battle to pay for his recovery. The Fun Pool League sprang into action as soon as news of Bob’s situation was known, and have organised a pool competition/benefit party to help offset his hefty medical bills. These are taking place on Saturday 11th February at Dara Bar from 1pm and will consist of a variety of different games for both teams and individuals, with an entry fee of 100 baht per player, with all funds raised going directly to pay medical costs. This is open to all the pool league teams and anyone else in Hua Hin and surrounding areas. Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. This week it is.. Blood, sweat and tears Hard work and effort in difficult circumstances. The expression ‘blood, sweat and tears’ is usually said to have been coined by Sir Winston Churchill in his famous “I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat” speech in 1940, when he warned the British people of the hardships to come in fighting WWII. Each country seems to have a shortlist of people to whom they attribute colourful quotations that lack an accredited author. In the USA the sage of choice is Mark Twain; in Ireland, Oscar Wilde and in England, Winston Churchill. However, it wasn’t Churchill who coined ‘blood, sweat and tears’ - ultimately it has a biblical source. The first occurrence of the expression found in print is in Sermons on Various Subjects by Christmas Evans, translated from the Welsh by J. Davis, 1837: Christ the High Priest of our profession, when he laid down his life for us on Calvary, was bathed in his own blood, sweat and tears. Evans, a.k.a. ‘The John Bunyan of Wales’ (25 December 1766 - 1838) was an eccentric but widely admired preacher. We can’t now be sure if it was he who coined the phrase or his translator. Either way, we can be sure that the phrase was in the language by 1837. Christmas Evans knew the Bible by heart and was no doubt influenced in his choice of words by this passage from The King James Bible, Luke 22:44: And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground. The French and Italians, also Christian nations of course, have their own versions of the phrase - ‘suer sang et eau’ (sweat blood and water/tears) and ‘lacrime e sangue’ (blood and tears). Churchill, although no great theological scholar, borrowed ‘blood, sweat and tears’ for his famous wartime speech and can certainly take the credit for the popular take-up of the phrase into everyday language. Al Kooper picked up on the phrase as the name for his new jazz-rock band in 1967. Kooper could hardly have known how apt a choice it was. The band has gone through more disagreements, sackings and changes of direction than most, with at least 140 musicians having been members at some point. Many of the things Churchill is supposed to have said are wrongly attributed. One of the better ones that can be verified is his exchange with the socialite and politician Nancy Astor:
Astor: Winston, if I were your wife I would put poison in your coffee! Churchill: And if I were your husband I would drink it. Sir Winston Churchill had a wonderful intellect and sense of humour, and that is amply illustrated in the following quotes, which are all attributed to him: We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. There is no such thing as a good tax. The inherent vice of capitalism is the unequal sharing of blessings; the inherent virtue of socialism is the equal sharing of miseries. We contend that for a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle. An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile—hoping it will eat him last. To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often. A fanatic is one who can�t change his mind and won�t change the subject. Bessie Braddock: �Sir, you are drunk.� Churchill: �Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.� A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on. Once in a while you will stumble upon the truth but most of us manage to pick ourselves up and hurry along as if nothing had happened. If you are going to go through hell, keep going. You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. You can always count on Americans to do the right thing—after they’ve tried everything else. History will be kind to me for I intend to write it. The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see. A sheep in sheep’s clothing. (On Clement Atlee) A modest man, who has much to be modest about. (On Clement Atlee) I am ready to meet my Maker. Whether my Maker is prepared for the ordeal of meeting me is another matter. The truth is incontrovertible, malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end; there it is. The best argument against democracy is a fiveminute conversation with the average voter. It has been said that democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried. Those who can win a war well can rarely make a good peace and those who could make a good peace would never have won the war.

FIRST HUA HIN INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL - GLAMOROUS BUT MUST DO BETTER
hua hin, THAILAND The inaugural Hua Hin International Film Festival ended on Sunday after four days of cinematic glamour, with major Hollywood stars Michelle Yeoh and Ryan Gosling in attendance, with the former presenting the awards to the winning films of the festival, along with acclaimed filmmaker Luc Besson and Mr. Suwat Liptapanlop, Festival Chairman. The festival encountered a few teething problems and has had mixed reviews from the English language daily newspapers in Thailand, with the Bangkok Post being particularly critical of what they saw as style over substance... “If the Red Carpet works, the film festival works. That seems to be the motto of the hype machine behind last weekend’s Hua Hin International Film Festival, which proudly paraded stars down the sandy, horsefree beach of the InterContinental while the cinemas were haunted by ghosts.” Criticism was also made because of last minute scheduling changes and the lack, in some instances, of the proper copy of films... “The daily _ not to say hourly _ changes of the
screening schedule drove viewers and critics mad. The publicity was not sufficient, and some screenings saw only three or four people in the room. The logistics were poor; some films were screened with preview DVDs, with the word “Preview” splashed across the screen (since the real copy of those films didn’t arrive). A few films were cancelled altogether. At the screening of a Thai film Headshot, there were no English subtitles in the print, a gross offence for any movie festival that calls itself international.” Hopefully lessons will have been learned from this year’s event and if there is to be a festival next year these issues resolved. As it stands there were still positives to be taken as well, not least from the fact that the festival was staged in Hua Hin in the first place. For the record, the awards presented were as follows: Terance Chang for his contribution to both Asian and Hollywood cinema, and for helping to create a bridge between film cultures. Luc Besson, for his support for Asian cinema, and in recognition of excellence for his film “The Lady”. The film, “It Gets Better”, as the film which was voted by the visiting public to receive the Audience Award.

The bizarre footwear, made by KUSA, features fake turf stitched into the soles so owners get the same sensation as strolling barefoot on a freshly mowed lawn. The company’s website shows sun seekers walking along the beach in the grass slippers which occasionally need to be fluffed for added comfort. With football grounds being the last place on earth that people would expect to encounter morons, the footage has sent shockwaves through the football leagues. “We are extremely concerned that one of the forty-five thousand people that attended the game was seen making racist gestures,” said a police spokesperson. “We have to assume that as a result of this incident all football fans, players and management are probably racist too.
