hua hin, THAILAND Regular readers of AWOL will have to cast their minds back over eighteen months when we reported on the brutal murder of Raymond Hind in July 2010 in Hua Hin. The slow-moving wheels of the Thai justice system have finally turned and reached court dates for two of the three originally accused with the crime - Mr Hind’s wife Bunak (Fon) and Thanagorn Budsasa (Lek) will appear separately in court in hearings between 21st and 24th February, but while this is with the support of the Thai police, it is apparently as a result of a civil case being brought by Mr Hind’s daughter Zoe. AWOL believes the hearings will take place at the provincial court in Prachuap Kiri Khan. According to a report by Andrew Drummond, the private prosecution is taking place because Thai police failed to establish a legal case. A third suspect, Komkit Imnoei (Don), who is believed to have actually carried out the deed, has never been caught. Mr Hind (who at the time we incorrectly named Hyde, which we apologise for) was suffering from terminal throat cancer when he was found with multiple stab wounds and clubbed to death at his home in Khao Noi Village, north west of Hua Hin centre. The two in the dock next week were actually released on bail despite objections from over thirty police in a signed deposition, which prompted friends of Mr Hind to set up a fighting fund to ensure his killers were pursued. Peter Rees and David Williams managed to freeze Mr Hind’s offshore and Thai bank accounts and initiate legal proceedings with his daughter, but could not prevent Fon from clearing out the UK account via Thai ATMs. We sincerely hope that justice is served.

hua hin, THAILAND Expats turned out in droves to attend the party held last Saturday to aid the President of the BEKK Solutions Fun Pool League, Bob Nicholls. Over fifty people attended the event which comprised a pool competition and various party activities, and the total raised to help with Bob’s medical bills to date is 44,000 baht. Bob was able to attend the party for a short while, but his condition dictates that he is currently unable to do very much - a swelling in his brain caused him to suffer a stroke, and while he has fortunately come through that relatively unscathed he has had to go twice a day to the hospital for medication to deal with the swelling. He is due a consultation at the end of this month when the doctors will determine whether he will require an operation or continued drug treatment, Bob has contacted AWOL to express his heartfelt thanks to everyone who both attended the bash and those who have helped both financially and physically. He would like to thank everyone in person but obviously at present is unable to. All we can say is - GET WELL SOON, BOB.

Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. For it to have been recorded there it must have been in This week it is.. Up a gum tree ‘Up a gum tree’ has several meanings. Frustrated and tired, the farmer opened the door, and there stood the pig and the cow.

But if Pascal Prokop falls prey to the current precipitation predicament, he won’t be too bothered. He drives a 1990 Volvo 240 - a model that is usually seen with a couple of black labradors and muddy football boots in the back - but in Pascal’s car you’ll find a fully functioning
wood-burning stove. Pascal, who lives near Zurich, removed the passenger seat and in its place put a metal mounting bracket to which he then bolted the stove. So he doesn’t choke, he also installed a chimney that funnels out the carbon monoxide and smoke. He decided to install the contraption after the car’s heater broke. more than 5,000 egg cartons. The Challenger II tank was created from 5,016 egg boxes, 26 litres (5.7 gallons) of glue, more than 10,000 nails and 5,000 staples. A team of four, headed by former film special effects maker Stuart Murdoch, took 512 hours to finish the 10m (34ft)-long sculpture. It was created to celebrate March Fourth, an annual egg-and-spoon race run by Eggs For Soldiers in aid of Help For Heroes. Mr Murdoch, 57, said: ‘The biggest challenge was getting it through the double doors of the Imperial War Museum in one piece for the photo shoot. When I made special effects for film, we built unusual props, but never anything like this.’ The tank will be at Clapham Common, London, on March 4.

london, england TOTTENHAM Hotspur manager Fabio Capello has been convicted of tax evasion relating to payments made when he was manager of Portsmouth FC. The Italian, who was jailed for four years at Southwark Crown Court last week, seemed bewildered by the verdict and even confused about where he was. Capello, who won domestic titles with Milan, Roma, Juventus and Real Madrid before moving to the lower leagues of English football, shouted: “This isn’t me! I don’t know how he’s done this, but this isn’t me!” before being led away. It is believed the verdict may have left the Italian temporarily deranged. Earlier he pleaded with the judge and insisted he was manager of the England national side and had never even been to Portsmouth.
England’s manager Harry Redknapp, who yesterday won a battle of his own after the FA reinstated John Terry as captain, said: “I’m sad to see Fabio go down but you just can’t trust foreigners. He had form with match-fixing at Juventus so I wasn’t surprised to hear he’d been a naughty boy with his tax returns. You wouldn’t want a slimy character like that in charge of your national side. No, you want a trustworthy, reliable red-blooded Englishman like ‘Arry ‘ere.” Redknapp, who yesterday appeared at a charity event with pop star wife Louise, has led England from strength to strength since succeeding Steve McClaren as manager and the team are now oddson to win this summer’s European Championship after their triumph at the World Cup in South Africa. This
followed his remarkable success at Southampton where they won three consecutive Premier League titles. Nicknamed ‘Nostradamus’ for his uncanny ability to predict how opponents will play, and even sometimes exactly when goals will be scored, England fans have credited him with supernatural powers - a claim he dismisses as ‘bonkers’. Meanwhile, he has amassed a personal fortune of more than £800m thanks to a series of shrewd investments which he declares rigorously to the Inland Revenue. He added: “There’s no big secret to what I do. It’s just thinking ahead and a little bit of luck. To do the things everyone says I can I’d have to have invented a time machine, or conned everybody by paying off the press.”
