hot dry weather, water supply problems - what happens if there is a fire?
hua hin, THAILAND AWOL has recently been contacted by concerned readers about the high risk of fires at this time of year and whether there is adequate water available in all areas to deal with it. As construction of houses, condos, hotels, roads and retail areas continues unabated all over the area, some districts are not getting enough mains supply water, and the concern is that fire hydrants may also be dry. Concerned readers are advised to contact one or all of the following to request a check on this vital water supply, and we believe if a significant number do so, pressure will be brought to bear to fix the problems sooner than later. The numbers to call are:
Hua Hin Fire Department 199 Hua Hin Municipality (Tessaban) 032 532 433 or 032 511 047 Hua Hin Water Company 032 511 677 The areas to the north west of the town, such as Samorphrong and Borfai are where most reports have been coming in of problems, but some other pockets south of the town also appear to struggle for water, and particularly at this time, the hottest and driest of the year.. Fires can easily start and spread, and the common site of deliberately started fires to burn debris, often at building sites, can only make this likelihood greater. The Fire Department has a standard form to request hydrant checks, so we would advise everyone to get their areas checked before it is too late.

ABSOLUTE SCUM cha am, THAILAND A man was arrested by the police on Monday and charged with assaulting and raping a 65-year-old Swiss woman in the Cha-am district on 16th April. Police said a team of officers arrested Banphot “Nong” Saardieam, 34, who was found hiding in a house in Chaam. Banphot, a construction worker, has confessed to the assault and rape of the Swiss woman in her house, according to police. The suspect said he was drunk and in need of money before he committed the crime. He decided to break into her house in the middle of the night to steal some

valuables, but the victim saw him and a fight started, he said. Banphot admitted that he hit her face many times with a fake gun, and that he tied her up with a motorcycle inner rubber tube. He then felt aroused and raped the woman who had by then passed out. Police said Banphot has a prior criminal record. He had committed obscene acts in public and had stolen water pumps in Prachuap Khiri Khan many times. The woman is in a serious condition in Hua Hin Hospital, and has had many Thais and foreigners visiting to wish her well. AWOL send our wishes for a speedy recovery.

birmingham, england British team develops Trek ‘tricorder’ A real-life version of Star Trek medic Dr McCoy’s diagnostic marvel, the tricorder, is being developed by British scientists using viruses that behave like spaghetti. The shoe box-sized prototype can already detect dangerous E.coli bugs in a sample in five minutes. Much of a muchness has remained as part of the language This week it is... Much of a muchness since Vanbrugh’s day, but has never been commonplace. Similar - difficult to distinguish. Shakespeare coined the words ‘countless’, silliness’, It is rather and odd phrase on the face of it as, in literal ‘tardiness’ and many others of the same form. ‘Muchness’ terms, it just means ‘of a similar quality of being much’. sounds typical of the Bard’s work and it seems a fair bet that it was one of his inventions. In fact, the word was in Lewis Carroll picked up on that oddness when, in Alice’s use by the 14th century, predating Shakespeare by more Adventures in Wonderland, 1865, he had the Dormouse than a century. Also, the Shakesperian-sounding phrase ask Alice “That begins with an M, such as... muchness ‘much of a muchness’ first appeared considerably later, - you know you say things are ‘much of a muchness’ in the play The Provok’d Husband, 1728, which was did you ever see... a drawing of a muchness?” a collaboration between John Vanbrugh and Colley Cibber: Man: I hope.., you and your good Woman agree still. J. Moody: Ay! ay! much of a Muchness. Muchness means physical magnitude or largeness and is derived from the earlier word mickleness.
