Or would you like to experience some real life spectator action at a sporting event in the Hua Hin area? With the 2012 Olympic Games currently focusing the eyes of the world on amazing sporting feats and endeavours, the annual Queen’s Cup Hua Hin International Triathlon 2012 couldn’t have come at a better time. The races will be held on Sunday 19th August from 7am, with both a duathlon and a triathlon taking place. Created to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen’s 80th birthday, this is the fourth year of the event which will start and finish from the picturesque fisherman’s village of Baan Tao Kao, located 10km south of Hua Hin. It is set to become one of the largest Triathlons in South East Asia, with an expected attendance of 500 racers from around the world. The triathlon will consist of a 1500 metre swim, followed by a 41 kilometre bike ride and a 12 kilometre run, while the duathlon has a 5 kilometre run in place of the swim. The routes for the swim and the runs are around the Kao Tao vicinity, while the bike section will take the competitors south past Pak Nam Pran before looping north again. There are both individual and team competitions, with trophies and prize money, with a total sum of 200,000 baht to be given out. Every finishing athlete will receive a medal and the winners will of course be presented with the Queen’s Cup. TIPS FOR ROAD USERS IN THAILAND
Welcome to an occasional column offering advice and tips for anyone using the roads in Thailand. Some of them will be serious, others somewhat tongue in cheek, but all of them are borne out of experience. This first edition features some information that will crop up again, and is essential for using the roads here. Possibly the most important thing any visitor or newcomer to the roads in Thailand should be aware of is to discard any previous notions of how things are done in your own country or other road using experiences. While on paper the traffic laws are very similar to other countries, the practical application is not. There is also an incredible inconsistency in both enforcement and how people use the roads. The first piece of advice that we would give also applies to driving everywhere else, but is much more important in Thailand, and that is to regard all other road users as complete and utter idiots and expect them to do absolutely anything at any time. This is not to say that all other road users ARE complete and utter idiots - lets just say we have to work on the basis of the lowest common denominator. Things you will probably witness that will demonstrate why this approach is needed are as follows:
•
Vehicles of all kinds and sizes driving towards you on your side of the road, particularly motorbikes; • Vehicles driving the wrong way down a one way street; • Use of mirrors - remember that mirrors are only used to check make up and hair, if at all; • Pedestrians walking straight across a road without looking; • Vehicles and people attempting to cross a railway line when the barriers are coming down and a train is approaching; • Vehicles, particularly motorcycles, driving at night either without lights at all, or with the front light completely obscured by whatever is in their front basket (normally their crash helmet!); • Use of mobile phones - the ability to talk on the phone while riding a motorbike and simultaneously balancing large shopping bags is a sacred artform here, and extra points are awarded for having children either riding on or driving the bike. Do you wonder why we say certain things, or what they really mean? Each week we will examine a different word or phrase and tell you how it came about. manchester, england NHS health and safety chiefs ban ‘dangerous’ metal paper clips The future of the humble metal paper clip is under threat after being banned by NHS health and safety officials for being ‘too dangerous’. Manchester NHS Trust officials made the decision to stop the use of the metal stationary item after a member of staff cut their finger using one. In a memo to staff, it was warned that the use of metal fasteners was ‘prohibited’ and the offending clips must be ‘carefully disposed of immediately’. ‘Due to recent incidents, NHS Manchester has decided to immediately withdraw the use of metal paper fasteners,’ explained the memo featuring an accompanying picture of a paper clip - just to avoid any confusion. ‘Please ensure any that remain in use be replaced by similar plastic fasteners. The use of metal fasteners is prohibited and must be carefully disposed of immediately. Thank you for your co-operation.’ The clips have been banned from the city’s GP surgeries, clinics and offices in favour of a plastic alternative. However, a member of staff told the Manchester Evening News: ‘It is ridiculous. They’re vaguely sharp, like drawing pins and fountain pens. A massive 63.3 per cent of the UK population was found to be inactive, making it the eighth laziest country out of the 122 ranked. Across the pond, the US is a lot less lazy than Brits may believe, coming 46th laziest. People were classed as inactive if they did not get around 2.5 hours of moderate activity per week. Malta was given the top spot for idleness, with 71.9 per cent of citizens classed as inactive, with Swaziland (69 per cent) and Saudi Arabia (68.8 per cent) rounding out the top three. Serbia, Argentina, Micronesia and Kuwait were all categorised as lazier than Britain, while the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia took the ninth and tenth spots. Overall, women ranked lower than men in the study, with the highest percentage of inactive women being discovered in countries where they do not tend to work like Saudi Arabia.
newquay, england Underage drinker caught using Rodney Trotter fake ID card It was a flawed plan that would have Del Boy screaming ‘You plonker!’ after an underage drinker attempted to enter a pub using a Rodney Trotter fake ID. The drunken youngster was barred from entering the Newquay Arms, after he pulled out the suspect driving licence last Saturday. Featuring a photograph of actor Nicholas Lyndhurst, who played Rodney in Only Fools and Horses, the card quickly aroused suspicions among amused door staff.
If Rodney’s instantly recognisable face wasn’t enough of a giveaway, then the address on the card, listed as Nelson Mandela House in Peckham, certainly was. Another clue was the age listed on the comical ID which claimed the teenager was 52. ‘I was there when he turned up,’ explained the pub’s manager, who didn’t want to be named. ‘He was a bit drunk, he handed over the ID and I looked at it and then scanned it to double check it was fake and then I noticed the picture. ‘It had Rodney Trotter’s picture and I said to him “so this is you?” and he just said “yeah yeah yeah”. Then I asked him his date of birth and he said it. Then I told him it didn’t match the one that was on the ID. I made the doormen UV the ID just to wind him up really and they started giggling and playing along with him.’ Local police Inspector Ian Drummond-Smith said the fake ID, which can be bought online for £2.99, could have landed him in jail. He said: ‘Lucky for him he’d left before police arrived, as possessing a forged driving licence can attract two years’ imprisonment. ‘We have seized 13 forged IDs so far this season but even we saw the funny side of this one. I don’t think it would ever have worked.’

But at least they got the Swiss flag right, which is a big plus. I’m sick of all these Olympic athletes going on about how hard they train and all their sacrifices. What do they want, a medal? Usain Bolt runs at 31mph which sounds good, but if he hits a child there’s a 40% chance they’ll die... Heard a piece of music on the telly last night, didn’t recognise it so used an app on my phone to identify it ………….turned out to be the Australian national anthem!

Girls night out Two women friends had gone out for a Girls Night Out, and had far too many cocktails. Completely trollied and staggering home, as no taxi driver would stop for them, they suddenly realized they both needed to pee.
